Council warns – Watch what you flush A new public awareness campaign designed to protect Logan’s wastewater network and the environment has been launched today by Logan City Council.

Roads and Water Infrastructure Committee Chairman Councillor Phil Pidgeon said through a series of videos the Don’t Rush to Flush Campaign would graphically reveal what happened when unwanted material was disposed of within in the city’s pipes and drains.

“We especially want to save residents from unwanted repair bills on their properties,” Cr Pidgeon said.

“In recent years throughout the world people have become more aware of what happens to the things we flush down toilets and tip down sinks.

“The most graphic illustration of the problem is a fatberg, which is a congealed lump of non-biodegradable products such as fat, sanitary items and wet wipes found in sewer systems.

“Authorities throughout the world have been doing battle with fatbergs, with one weighing almost 100 tonnes discovered in a London sewer under a major road in 2014.

“Weighing around the same as 10 double decker buses, the Manchester fatberg took workers over a week to dislodge.

“Disposing of unwanted items down toilets, sinks and wastewater pipes can result in homeowners incurring expensive plumbing bills to unblock wastewater pipes on their property.

So-called “flushable wipes” are estimated to be responsible for 75 per cent of all blockages.

The Australian Consumer and Competition Commission is investigating a complaint by consumer group Choice which is campaigning for these products to be removed from supermarket shelves.

Cr Pidgeon said the problem with these wipes is they were not biodegradable while toilet paper broke down almost immediately when flushed.

Independent tests undertaken by Choice have revealed the wet wipes do not break down in any way during a 21-hour testing period.

Logan’s Don’t Rush to Flush campaign will be delivered through three short informational videos which will air on social media and Council’s website.

Information about a new toilet for Bailey Road Park, Birkdale, and coastal erosion will be discussed at a community day to be held on Saturday 13 May at the park from 10am to 2pm.

Division 8 Councillor Tracey Huges, who is hosting the day, said residents would also be able to speak with her on the day about any other local projects or issues such as traffic management.

Cr Huges said there would be a free sausage sizzle, children’s activities and a free exercise class led by a qualified personal trainer at 10.30am, to show people how to make the best use of the exercise equipment in the park.

“I’m very keen to hear what people have to say about a range of issues, including the new amenities for the park as well as coastal erosion,” Cr Huges said.

A small structure containing one unisex toilet has been flagged for the area in Council’s Open Space Strategy following customer requests and approaches to Cr Huges.

“I’ve had people ask me for a toilet in the park, as many children and adults use it for recreation and the nearest public toilet is kilometres away,” she said.

“This community day will give residents the chance to provide feedback on possible locations for the toilet.”

2017 Premier’s Reading Challenge launched Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk today officially launched the 2017 Premier’s Reading Challenge at Bardon State School in Brisbane.

The Premier said 2017 marked the 12th year of the challenge, which aimed to improve literacy and encourage children to read for pleasure and learning.

“More than 165,000 young Queenslanders took part in the challenge last year reading a total of 2.24 million books, an impressive increase from 2015’s total of 150,000 students and 1.95 million books,” she said.

“This included individual readers and participants from 900 schools and 414 early childhood centres across the state.”

Education Minister Kate Jones read to the Year 1 and 2 composite class at today’s launch, with the young students excited to begin their reading challenge.

GET YOUR QLD continues the fight for the new South East Weekly FUNDRAISER Sunshine Coast University Hospital STARTED Your FREE weekly magazine Medical School TODAY Health and Ambulance Services Minister Cameron Dick has today written to Federal Assistant Minister for Health Dr David Gillespie urging him to deliver Commonwealth supported medical school places to ensure the Sunshine Coast University Hospital medical school’s future and its ability to train the Sunshine Coast doctors of tomorrow.

Copies of the letter have also been sent to Federal Minister for Health and Sport, Greg Hunt and Federal Minister for Education and Training, Senator Simon Birmingham.

“On Friday, I met with Dr Gillespie in Adelaide and he confirmed to me that the Turnbull Government would not be allocating any additional Commonwealth Supported Places for the study of medicine across Australia,” the Minister said.

“This will result in only full fee-paying international students making up the additional 15 student places that are required to ensure the Sunshine Coast medical school has a full complement of 50 students.

“A total of 50 students are required to make the medical school viable for a university provider.

“This is an unacceptable and short-sighted outcome for the Sunshine Coast and our state.

“It will also jeopardise the ability to train and attract the medical workforce the growing region needs for the future.

“The Sunshine Coast community deserves a quality medical school to match the world-class hospital that has been established by the Queensland Government, so I have today formally written to Dr Gillespie to again urge him to reconsider and reverse this decision.

“Unless these Commonwealth Supported Places are forthcoming, I understand that the only way a university provider can make the medical school viable is to recruit overseas medical students at the expense of local students.

Queensland SES teams vie for top spot at rescue challenge State Emergency Service (SES) volunteers from around Queensland will test their rescue skills and battle each other for the top spot at the SES State Disaster Rescue Challenge this weekend in Townsville.

Minister Assisting the Premier on North Queensland and Member for Mundingburra Coralee O’Rourke will present the Minister’s Cup on behalf of Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Services Mark Ryan to the champions who score the highest number of points during the two-day rescue challenge at a presentation dinner on Sunday.

Minister O’Rourke said the SES State Disaster Rescue Challenge was held every two years and was an opportunity for SES volunteers to practice and develop rescue skills that provide life-saving support to Queenslanders during emergencies.

“This year, seven six-member teams from Warwick, Redlands, Townsville, Logan, Rockhampton, Cairns and Bundaberg will battle it out as they confront a series of unexpected scenarios under strict time pressure,” Mrs O’Rourke said.

“The challenges include a boat crash rescue, vertical rescue, building collapse and restricted-space rescue, navigation exercise and mass casualty incidents.

“The event will demonstrate the professionalism and expertise of the SES and test their ability to perform under high pressure.”

Minister O’Rourke said she has seen firsthand the great work of the SES on the Whitsunday Coast, while crews helped local communities clean up in the aftermath of Tropical Cyclone Debbie.

Member for Townsville Scott Stewart said he was delighted that Townsville was chosen to host the SES State Disaster Rescue challenge.

“We’ve got the best of the best competing in our city and it’s great to see such talented and dedicated volunteers being recognised for their efforts.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services Assistant Commissioner for SES Peter Jeffrey wished all volunteers luck.

The winning team will go on to represent Queensland at the National Disaster Rescue Challenge in Hobart in November.
