The sound of music returns to Little Ship Club LSC’s “Music by the Bay” program for 2016 kicks back on both Saturday afternoons of the coming school holidays with free entertainment for the whole family on the Club’s One Mile waterfront grounds at Dunwich on Straddie – and some diverse performances to savour!

“We’re opening this year’s program with two quite varied events,” said LSC Commodore Roger McDowall, “starting with a string trio on Easter Saturday 26th, followed by a vocal duo on Saturday 2nd April. There’s quite a buzz over on the island already at the return of our weekend musical program.”.

Almost a tonne of batteries to be recycled Almost a tonne of power tool batteries in Brisbane alone have been collected for recycling as part of a pilot being run through Brisbane hardware stores.

Environment Minister Dr Steven Miles said 800 kilograms of batteries had been returned to 19 tool retailers by members of the public.

“This is an excellent result in such a short time, largely due to the efforts of DIY-ers and tradies in bringing their power tool batteries back for recycling,” Dr Miles said.

“All up, some 2.2 tonnes of recyclable power tool batteries have been saved from landfill since I launched the pilot on Father’s Day last year.

“If you’re getting your DIY gear out for the Easter long weekend, don’t forget that it’s easy to save old power tool batteries from landfill.

Queenslanders pull up their socks for World Down Syndrome Day Queenslanders are encouraged to pull up their socks today to promote the inclusion of people with Down syndrome for World Down Syndrome Day. Disability Services Minister Coralee O’Rourke said World Down Syndrome Day was all about celebrating the achievements of people with Down syndrome and raising greater awareness of their abilities and contributions in the community.

“All Queenslanders are being asked to wear bright socks, long socks or even lots of socks today in support of World Down Syndrome Day,” she said.

“The Lots of Socks campaign aims to create conversation, to promote the inclusion of people with Down syndrome in all aspects of community life.

“World Down Syndrome Day is now in its 12th year, and each year the voice of people with Down syndrome, and those who support them, grows louder.

“I encourage all Queenslanders to get involved in today’s campaign, as it is through education, awareness and understanding, that we will achieve greater inclusion and equal opportunity for all people with disability.”

The Queensland Government has a long history of supporting people with Down syndrome and has provided more than $210,000 to the Down Syndrome Association of Queensland for information and advocacy services.

CEO Down Syndrome Association of Queensland Louise Lloyd said having Down syndrome did not define a person, and all people with Down syndrome were unique and contributed to the world in a number of ways.

“Some are brilliant musicians, some are great public speakers some are sporting heroes while others are artists and actors,” Ms Lloyd said.

“The NDIS will completely transform the way people with disability, including people with Down syndrome receive services and supports, and how they participate in community life,” Mrs O’Rourke said.

“Now is the time for people with disability to start planning for this huge change, and thinking about how they can achieve their goals and aspirations through the scheme.”

The sound of music returns to Little Ship Club ...continued from page 1 This coming Saturday features the “Champagne Strings” trio playing three extended sets from 2pm, showcasing popular light classical music, show tunes and movie themes.

Queensland Pops Orchestra cellist Christopher Patrick - author of “ABBA: Let the music speak” (the world’s first musical analysis of the Swedish supergroup) and co-author of the just-published “The Seekers 50-year history” – will be joined by Pops colleagues Anna Jack and Sarah Ryan for a delicious afternoon of string music.

The music changes gear the following Saturday (2nd April) with the rich, smooth harmonies, amazing voices and magnificent melodies of vocal duo “Ali and Khai” performing a diverse range of covers in their unique style.

Victoria Point local man Neil Reed has been a member of the Here’s to Life – Sing for Life group for 18mths. Neil’s passion for playing tennis & golf had been curtailed due to several major illnesses including a stroke. Neil joined Sing for Life after seeing how much enjoyment his wife Barbara experienced participating in H2L programs.

PCYC vacation care The Logan Police Citizens Youth Club or PCYC as it is widely known by the community has been operating for over 30 years, and in line with the state wide PCYC mission statement ‘Enhancing Queensland Communities through Youth Development’ strives to forge relationships between Police and young people, and to assist young people to make positive life choices.
