Redland City Council limits rates rise Redland City Council’s 2016-17 Budget will see a typical Redlands household’s rates increase by just 0.7 per cent or about 43 cents a week – the lowest rise in South-East Queensland.

Redland City Mayor Karen Williams said this year’s $288 million Budget, adopted unanimously, also predicted a fourth successive operating surplus while maintaining Council’s low debt levels.

“This year a typical Redland household – that’s a category 1a owner-occupied property with a property value of about $306,450 – will see a modest increase of just 0.7 per cent or about 43 cents a week including all water consumption, rates and utility charges,” she said.

“Indeed, this increase covers only a small part of the extra impost on Council from rises in water, utilities and other state government charges.

“Council has been particularly hard hit by a 9.2 per cent increase in state government bulk water charges – the fifth hefty increase in a row – and had it not been for this and other rises outside of our control residents’ bills would have gone down with the average general rate for a category 1a owner-occupied property falling 3.1 per cent.

“This is the best result in our region by far and I thank Councillors for unifying to put residents first by absorbing millions of dollars in external costs rather than passing them on.’’

The weekly increase of 43 cents compares with 72 cents for Moreton Bay Regional Council, $1.12 for the Gold Coast, $1.35 for Brisbane, $1.40 for Logan, $2.02 for Ipswich and $2.14 for the Sunshine Coast.

Cr Williams said the increase in the state’s bulk water charge to $33.3 million followed an increase of about 10 per cent last year, which Council absorbed.

“While we must pass on this year’s state government rise, we have kept our retail water costs at last year’s levels to minimise the impact on residents,’’ she said.

Logan City Council appoints new CEO Logan City Council today appointed a new Chief Executive Officer, Mr Andrew Milner.

The appointment comes after an extensive nationwide recruitment process to attract an executive with a new and innovative style of leadership for Logan City Council.

City of Logan Mayor Luke Smith, said while the quality of candidates was outstanding, Mr Milner was a clear choice for the position.

“Andrew comes to this role with a tremendous depth of experience in management, leadership and innovation,” Mayor Smith said.

“His extensive experience, leading innovation and change across a broad range of industries, both commercial and government, will bring a fresh approach to Council.”

Learn how to keep chickens

State champions case for Get Logan Moving The campaign to Get Logan Moving is being championed by the Queensland Government.

City of Logan Mayor, Cr Luke Smith, is joining a delegation to Canberra that’s calling on the Turnbull Government to fix congestion on the M1 and use the appropriate 80:20 funding split.

Cr Smith today met with the Minister for Main Roads, Mark Bailey, Gold Coast Mayor Cr Tom Tate, and representatives from RACQ and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland.

All parties acknowledged it was vital to upgrade the M1, being part of the National Land Transport Network and the highest trafficked road in Queensland, with more than 147,000 vehicles travelling along it each day, including 12,000 heavy vehicles.

After an hour-long meeting, the parties issued a joint media statement: We are calling on the Turnbull Government to fund $430 million upgrades to the M1 at the Gateway merge (M3) and Mudgeeraba and Varsity Lakes using the appropriate 80:20 funding split.

The Queensland Government has committed 20 per cent for each project.

The M1 is part of the National Land Transport Network, and therefore should be funded in line with the Federal Government’s own funding formula.

These are vitally important upgrades as the M1 is the highest trafficked road in Queensland.

More than 147,000 vehicles travel on the M1 each day, including more than 12,000 heavy vehicles.

We want a fair deal for Logan, the Gold Coast and Queensland. We want to get these projects underway.

Led by the Minister, we will take part in a delegation to Canberra with other key stakeholders as soon as possible.

“Since it began locally in 2003 this event has raised more than $100,000 for state school chaplaincy programs in the Redlands, which in turn support local families,” Cr Williams said.

Advance Queensland invests in time travel app TimeLooper, the first global startup attracted to Queensland as part of the Palaszczuk Government’s Advance Queensland Hot DesQ program has been welcomed to Brisbane by Innovation Minister Leeanne Enoch today.

Coming to Queensland from the US, TimeLooper is the developer of a smartphone app that allows tourists to turn back the clock and relive some of history’s most iconic moments such as the German blitz bombings of Trafalgar Square in London or the famous VJ Day kiss in Times Square, New York.

“TimeLooper is a great example of the kind of startup we want to attract to Queensland,” Ms Enoch said.

“This innovative company will not only inject new talent and experience into Queensland’s growing startup ecosystem but also tie in to the state’s strong tourism sector.

“Queensland’s reputation as the Startup State is gathering momentum and it must be sustained if we want to create the knowledge-based economy that our future demands.

“That’s why we are investing $405 million in Advance Queensland programs – of which Hot DesQ is a part – to create sustainable jobs now and in the future.

WORK STEPS UP ON NEW BEAUDESERT PEDESTRIAN LINK A new footpath is set to bridge the gap between Beaudesert and Gleneagle with work stepped up on the much-anticipated project.

The project will link Wesley Way to the existing town footpath network at Elysium Gardens and involves the construction of new sections of path on the northern and southern sides of Waters Creek and the installation of a footbridge joining the two.

Mayor Greg Christensen said the progress of the footpath was attracting a significant amount of attention from the public, particularly passing motorists.

“The crossing at Waters Creek is arguably the northern entry to Beaudesert and Council is working towards an outcome which provides not only a pedestrian-friendly result but an aesthetically pleasing one as well,” he said.

“When the functional footpath works are completed we will be undertaking landscaping and delivering additional amenities to beautify the corridor.”

Cr Christensen said a well-maintained footpath network was a central element in fostering vibrant and active towns and villages.

“I think it’s important that, where practicable, residents have the convenience of safely walking or cycling from home to the centres of our major towns and villages,” he said.

“In 2016-17 Council has doubled its financial commitment to maintaining the footpath network to $555,000.”

Division 4 representative Cr Michael Enright said the new footpath and the associated amenities would be well-utilised by residents of all ages.

“It will certainly be most welcomed by residents in the Scenic Rise estate and neighbouring Country Club estate, but I think the wider Beaudesert community will also appreciate and enjoy the outcomes of this project,” he said.

New exhibitions in the Redlands Watercolour paintings, strands of woven ribbon stars and colourful native textiles will feature in three new exhibitions to open this month at Redland Art Gallery.

Cleveland painter and printmaker Brian Hatch will showcase a series of miniature watercolours and imaginative land and seascapes, as well as engraved zinc plates inspired by whale bone engraving techniques, from Saturday 16 July to Saturday 3 September at the Capalaba gallery.

Redland City Mayor Karen Williams said the exhibition, held in conjunction with Queensland Seniors Week 2016, was inspired

by Mr Hatch’s travels around Australia and a fascination with the old art form of ‘scrimshaw’ used by Hawaiian whalers.

Call for applications for first round of Queensland Government’s $12 million in Community Sustainability Action grants Heritage applications are being sought from the community in the first round of the new $12 million grants program announced in the State Budget to support heritage, environment and wildlife projects.

Minister for Environment and Heritage Protection Dr Steven Miles said the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection was kicking off the program with the heritage round.

While applications open on Tuesday July 19, Dr Miles said information for community groups and other applicants was being released today (Saturday).

Grants of up to $50,000 will be available for heritage projects to improve or restore places of heritage value.

“There are three categories under the new Community Sustainability Action grants to support heritage, environment and wildlife projects,” Dr Miles said.

“The first to open will be ‘Conserving Queensland’s heritage places’ (on Tuesday), and round one applications will close on 19 August 2016.

“A total of $12 million in grant funding will be available over three years, $680,000 of which will be allocated to heritage projects under round one.

“Activities may include improvements or repairs, for example roofing, stumping, painting and other similar works, to Queensland’s heritage properties.

“Funding will also be available for the development or review of Conservation Management Plans, or other projects such as interpretative signage.

Round one for the environment and wildlife categories will also open soon, and focus on: Rehabilitation, protection and support for Queensland’s unique environment and wildlife; koala research to support the long term viability of populations in the wild, and tackling invasive species to help protect native flora and fauna.

John Paul College to Farewell Rio Olympians in Sea of Green & Gold John Paul College will become a sea of green and gold on Monday 18 July as thousands of students gather to farewell five past students heading to the Rio Olympic Games.

Attending the event will be Mitch Larkin (alumnus 2010 - swimming), Keryn McMaster (alumnus 2010 – swimming), Georgia Ridler (alumnus 1992 – Lead Team Psychologist with the Dolphins swimming team) and Mick Downer (alumnus 1994 – Assistant Technical Coach with the Australian Boomers) who all depart Australia next week to join their respective teams. Genevieve LaCaze (alumnus 2006 – athletics) has been competing in Europe and will be represented by her father, Tony.

The College Marching Band will lead the Olympians up the main driveway.

Students will cheer them on armed with Australian flags, streamers and balloons.

A feature of the special assembly which follows will involve each Olympian placing their photo in a specially commissioned display to form the Olympic Rings which will hang at the College for the duration of the Olympics.

Headmaster, Peter Foster, says the College is enormously proud of the past students.

“We want to extend our very best wishes to each of these past students; to tell them that we understand the dedication, sacrifice and sheer hard work that has gone into making this Australian team and to show them that we are right behind them as they compete on the world’s largest sporting stage.

These past students are fantastic role models for our current students. That we will be setting our alarm clocks to follow the journeys of five John Paul College past students in Rio makes us even more excited for the Games to begin,” he said.

Genevieve LaCaze (alumnus 2006) is a two-time Olympian having competed in London 2012. The 3000m steeplechase specialist will also contest the 5000m event after qualifying in June. Genevieve has enjoyed a phenonemal year, recording ten PBs across numerous events.
