NEW LOGAN BASED TRADE TRAINING SCHOOL OPENS in 2017 THE Australian Technology and Agricultural College (ATAC) will open its doors to students next year at their new North Maclean campus on Brisbane’s Southside in Logan City. The College offers senior studies opportunities for students looking for a head start to a trade through an Australian School-based Apprenticeship and Traineeships curriculum leading to nationally recognized qualifications. Mr Terry O’Hanlon-Rose, a national leader in Vocational Education, has been appointed as head of College. Mr O’Hanlon-Rose is working with Founder Dr Narendra Nand to fast track the building of Stage 1, appoint staff and develop curriculum. “Students will be able to study for their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE), and a number of Vocational Qualifications, including the beginning stages of their Certificate III in their Trade or Vocational area,” he said. In 2017, the College will operate from a Parkinson Campus at “The Spot” whilst the Industrial Tech and General Learning area buildings are constructed on the north Maclean site. The College will operate bus services between North Maclean and Parkinson to assist in the transport of students. The ATAC differs from traditional schools because students study in a supportive trade-focussed environment with learning occurring in a variety of settings outside the classroom. The College has a limited number of places for Year 10 and 11 students in 2017 and enrolment enquiries can be made either online www.atac.qld.edu .au or by calling the main office on 5547 8598.

Queensland retailers entered the busy Christmas trading period on a high with latest figures showing a 4.3% trend increase over the year to November. Acting Treasurer Bill Byrne said Queensland’s nominal retail turnover surpassed an impressive $61 billion for the 12 months to November 2016, according to retail trade data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics today. “I’m thrilled to see the data showing trend nominal retail turnover in Queensland was 4.3 per cent higher over the year to November 2016,” Mr Byrne said. “What this shows is Queensland consumers have the confidence to spend because they have confidence in the Queensland economy. “It’s a big boost to come just before Christmas. “This was the strongest annual growth of the States – ahead of NSW (4.0%), Tasmania (3.8%), South Australia and Victoria (both 3.4%) and Western Australia (0.2%),” said Mr Byrne. “Overall, Queenslanders spent $5.2 billion in November, recording nation-leading monthly growth of 0.6 per cent.” Analysis of the ABS data showed that trend annual growth in Queensland’s retail turnover was driven by increased expenditure on food (up 3.4 per cent) and household goods (up 7.3 per cent). Mr Byrne said that the nation-leading turnover highlighted in the latest ABS data underlined a continuation of growth in Queensland’s retail trade. In December the Paalaszczuk Government introduced new job creating programs. For more information visit www.statements.qld.gov.au

School activities KRANK up the holiday fun From magic and Lego workshops to rock climbing and go karting, the KRANK School Holiday program has plenty of activities to entertain young people in Logan during January for the school holidays. The KRANK School Holiday program runs from Monday 9 January to Saturday 21 January, with two separate activity schedules aimed at 5-11 year olds and 12-17 year olds. Sports and Community Services Chairperson, Councillor Steve Swenson, encouraged local families to check out the program and book in for some low-cost fun in January. “The KRANK program caters for a wide variety of interests and the activities are deliberately included to be free or low-cost so that there is no barrier to young people across the city participating,” Cr Swenson said. “Unfortunately I’m a little bit too old to take part which is a shame because looking at the program, on one day alone I could have played netball, learned some tricks at a circus workshop, played with Lego, gone fi shing and made some chocolate.” Activities are organised at diff erent venues across the city and are spread between outdoor and indoor locations to account for poor weather. Cr Swenson reminded local families that it was important to book ahead for the activities. “We do ask people to register and because spaces are limited it is a good idea to book early so your child doesn’t miss out on the fun,” he said. The best way to see the program and download the registration form is via Council’s website at www.logan.qld.gov.au/krank

CELEBRATE AUSTRALIA DAY

Be wary of stonefish this Australia Day

Redlanders and visitors should take care when wading in the bay and estuaries due to the possible presence of stonefish. It follows an unusually high occurrence of stonefish last January, particularly at Raby Bay. Tourism operators have advised of recent sightings at Peel Island. Redland City Mayor Karen Williams said Council was erecting warning signs at popular wading and swimming spots as a precaution. “We just need people to be aware that stonefish can be in our waters at this time of year, so I urge all beachgoers to wear thick-soled shoes if wading in the Moreton Bay,” Cr Williams said. “While last year’s high numbers right along the southeast Queensland coast were quite unusual, public safety is paramount and we want to make sure people understand that stonefish can be prevalent at this time of year.” The sting from a stonefish is very painful and victims should seek immediate medical attention. Check our www.redland.qld.gov.au for updates.

Major work kicks off on new Beaudesert Town Centre Bypass The Palaszczuk Government and Scenic Rim Regional Council are driving ahead with the $27.5 million Beaudesert Town Centre Bypass. Acting Premier and Minister for Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning Jackie Trad joined Mayor Greg Christensen for the start of major works. “It’s great to be back in Beaudesert for the start of major works on the Beaudesert Town Centre Bypass, Ms Trad said. “The Palaszczuk Government and local council are investing in this major infrastructure project to support growth in the Scenic Rim area. “We’ve seen a dramatic increase in the number of vehicles travelling through Beaudesert over the last few years with more than 13,000 vehicles passing through the townshipY per day. WEEKL Scenic Rim Mayor Greg Christensen said he was excited by the start

of such a significant project, which would support the $30 million SCT Logistics freight terminal at Bromelton and help drive further development in the region. The Beaudesert Town Centre Bypass will start at the intersection of the Mount Lindesay Highway at Helen Street and connect to Bromelton Street (Beaudesert–Boonah Road), providing new signalised intersections at each end. It is expected to be completed by the end of 2017, weather permitting. SEE Civil Pty Ltd were awarded the construction contract in November last year, with site establishment undertaken before Christmas. For more information on the Beaudesert Town Centre Bypass call 1800 314 929, email beaudesertbypass@tmr.qld.gov.au or P visit www.tmr.qld.gov.au 26

The Mulberry Bush Childcare Centre ...continued from page 1 Bush Babies Nurseries Pty Ltd is a family owned and operated business established in the UK in 1992. With experience running 7 centres in the UK and achieving the highest childcare assessment rating of “Outstanding” we decided to expand to Australia to meet the need for expert childcare services. In partnership with Bush Babies Nurseries, Jenna Tuuta established Te Kōhanga Ēkara, a bi-lingual Kindergarten program, which has been developed to cater to the growing number of New Zealand families within the Australian community. The program aims to provide an environment for children to gain a positive awareness of Māori culture through the use of Te Reo Māori. Bush Babies Nurseries provides a warm, caring and stimulating environment coupled with a high standard of education and care for children from 6 weeks to 5 years of age. We believe that each child is unique and should be given the opportunity to develop into a happy and confident individual. We always ‘praise’ for effort and not for achievement alone because we know effort is the real key to success. We believe that given maximum opportunities and encouragement children will thrive and have the confidence they need for their future development. Our vision is to provide the highest quality childcare and education in early years via partnership with families and the community to bring out the best in every child. Our mission statement is to provide an environment for all children that is “The next best thing to home”.

Redlanders can add a little zen to their New Year with a free 10-week PG yoga program at Cleveland. 15 The free classes, run by Redland City Council in conjunction with Divine Jewel Yoga, start at 7.30am on January 13 in Bloomfield Street Park in the heart of the Cleveland CBD. Redland City Mayor Karen Williams said the free yoga in the park program was part of Council’s commitment to revitalise the Cleveland CBD. “The Cleveland city heart offers so much because of its laid-back village atmosphere and Council is keen to build on that by making it more attractive and inviting to all through activities in the park and other community initiatives, as well as supporting our CBD businesses,’’ Cr Williams said. “The yoga classes are part of our active-communities focus and among more than 100 ideas received from the community, so stay tuned for more action in the Cleveland CBD soon.’’ Cr Williams said Council was also planning to provide extra shade and seating options for Bloomfield Park as part of its moves to boost the Cleveland CBD. Division 2 Councillor Peter Mitchell (Cleveland, North Stradbroke Island) said the yoga classes and other planned activities would give Redlanders and visitors even more reason to head into Cleveland to shop, dine, meet for a coffee and relax. “We’re also hosting the Snake Boss Reptile Show on 17 January at which the star of the TV series Animal Planet, Julia Baker, will show off some of her favourite pet reptiles. Youngsters will get to meet some very interesting visitors,” Cr Mitchell said. The free yoga classes will run from 7.30am-8.15am on Fridays from 13 January – 17 March. Please arrive early to ensure your spot and bring a PGtowel, water bottle and yoga mat. For more info: www.redland.qld.gov.au

Queensland businesses tap into university graduateGET expertise YOUR

Queenslanders are set to beneďŹ t from new partnerships between businesses and university graduates developed as part of a Palaszczuk Government innovation program. Acting Minister for Small Business Kate Jones said the Knowledge Transfer Partnerships funding would connect small and medium sized businesses with university graduates to work on business problems. “The program brings together Queensland business and universities to exchange ideas, and develop innovative and novel business solutions,â€? Ms Jones said. “In these latest rounds of funding, 16 businesses across the state will be supported to employ a university graduate with speciďŹ c skills to work on projects in the mining, manufacturing, education and training, health care and social assistance and tourism sectors. “This is a win-win for small and medium sized businesses and university graduates.â€? Each business will receive up to $50,000 towards the cost of collaborating with an Honours, Masters or PhD graduate who will work on a speciďŹ c project focused on innovation and business growth. “These projects create job opportunities through helping small and medium sized businesses succeed, leading to long-term economic and community beneďŹ ts,â€? she said. “We expect this project will lead to increased turnover as we market our product both nationally and globally – ultimately resulting in 100–150 full-time employees in our Townsville-based headquarters,â€? he said. Brisbane-based Synapse (formerly Brain Injury Association of Queensland), in collaboration with a GriďŹƒth University graduate, will continue work on an online screening tool called the ‘Guddi’ for neuro-cognitive assessment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living in regional and remote Queensland. “We’re a non-government organisation and this partnership will enable us to recruit a psychology graduate with advanced skills in statistical analysis who will deliver a skill set not currently available in-house.â€? Here’s to Life - Fun, friendship and fitness I am an 81 year old triathlete and half marathon runner, but on my bucket list was to learn to tap dance. Having had brain surgery last year my balance is not 100% and having never danced in my life, only shuffled around the dance floor, according to my wife Shirl, it wasn’t a good idea when I said Sue was starting a tap beginners class on a Monday and I was going to attend, she said I don’t think you can do it. I attended my first class and loved it although I knew it was going to be a difficult thing to learn tap dance steps. The following week I bought a pair of tap dance shoes and I was away. Sue is a superb teacher and has a lot of patience in teaching this guy, but also there are wonderful girls in the class whom are so helpful this is an extra bonus. Shirley has been attending classes at Here’s to Life for two years and would recommend it to anyone. Shirley says ‘Here’s to Life has been a tremendous source of fun, great exercise and friendship’. She is now 80 and really believe it is so essential to keep exercising as we get older. Sue always recommends to take things at our own pace so there are no recriminations if one needs to slow down. Not in my wildest dreams, that after a few months I would be on the stage at RPAC dancing in a concert, but it happened. It was so enjoyable, never having been on stage before was a superb experience. Tap is not easy to learn but it is so satisfying to learn new steps and use them. My favourite activity is sometimes at the end of a lesson Sue puts some music on and we dance freely using whatever steps we know to keep in beat with the music. I love to watch the more advanced tappers, they’ve got music, they’ve got rhythm ……Could you ask for anything more? Phone now for more information about the wonderful unique programs Here’s to Life have to offer. 3809 0239 or 0407 154 993 Tony & Shirley Cameron-Kirk

Family: Loss, set backs, expense, pet issues and elders may dominate the 27th into 28th for a hefty cross section of you and if you do not get ‘hit yourself’ you may easily know a Gemini that does, especially if they are within your family. Karma Numbers: 3, 9, 11, 15, 25

Family: Spending goes ON the rise big time the 27/28th but it does appear to be for travel, vehicles [upgrades OR additional,] and for entertainment; like vacations or extended holiday. Karma Numbers: 3, 7, 9, 11, 51

Cancer

Capricorn

Family: Push to get as much done within the family, even right down to scheduling appointments into the future before the 31st hits. This months full moon on Friday, appears to be demanding, intense, bring issues that do not just vanish over night. Karma Numbers: 2, 4, 6, 8, 19

Family: Cooperation appears rather good the 27th to PM hours of the 30th with most members ‘quickly picking up on your needs and goals’ especially spouse and elders, particularly Aquarius, Capricorn, Cancer, Leo and Taurus. Financial demands may rise sharply near the 31st but appear to solve quickly by or before the 3rd. Karma Numbers: 0, 8, 10, 22, 40

Leo

Aquarius

Family: Well, there is NO way around it; spending is up ridiculously this week and the ‘list’ is long... starting with remodeling, vehicle repair and purchase and followed by vacation, rewards, gifting, old promises and ‘making a spouse or member happy’ for any number of reasons. Karma Numbers: 3, 11, 13, 30, 33

Family: A rather stubborn or challenging day the 25th is indicated and there can be any number Make the most out of the 27th to 31st as after that, things can ‘do down hill’ and out of your hands quickly, especially with spouse of any sign, power people or elders, Leo, Sagittarius, Cancer or Capricorn members. Needs run ‘deep’ and many ďŹ nancial requests appear to have some kind of ‘emotion or history’ attached to them. Karma Numbers: 0, 5, 11, 24, 50

Virgo

Pisces

Family: Practical spending is UP the 28th to 30th and elective spending on travel or vehicles the 27th and again the 31st may add to your debt load, which always adds you your loss of sleep! Keep levels as low as you can. Karma Numbers: 2, 8, 11, 16, 32

Family: Cooperation is very poor the 27th to 29th, especially the AM of the 27th and PM of the 29th. While a ‘small break’ the PM of the 28th is likely, especially with communications, it may ‘back ďŹ re’ or â€˜ďŹ‚op’ quickly. Get things ‘in place’ and then keep them there by ‘leaving them alone’ in that time frame. Karma numbers: 0, 1, 3, 99, 12
