Logan City Council unveils bursary winners Tales of perseverance and strength among hardship were revealed at a special Logan City Council presentation.

The 15 recipients of the 2017 Logan City Tertiary Educational Bursaries to support the education costs for local students were unveiled during a presentation in the Council chambers on Monday 13 February.

City Treasurer Councillor Trevina Schwarz said it had been heart-warming to hear the stories of this year’s recipients.

“This is a remarkable group of young people who are committed to continuing their education and furthering themselves despite numerous obstacles,” she said.

Cr Schwarz said one the recipients, Anisha Gandhi, had motivated her fellow year 12 students as senior school captain to do the best they could in their final year.

“Not only did Anisha achieve an OP one score but so did 15 others in her year,” she said.

“This is a very selfless act of such a young person. Anisha hopes to study Midwifery and Nursing with the aim making a difference in remote and rural communities in the future.”

Cr Schwarz said some of the students come from refugee families which means they are often the only link between their family members and the community, acting as interpreters and carers for their parents and other relatives.

She said the tertiary educational bursary would greatly assist another recipient, Amena Amena, as she was currently being supported by her older sister.

“Amena came to Australia in 2014 from Afghanistan on an orphan visa and will be studying nursing at Griffith University.”

Cr Schwarz said Amena and Anisha were examples of the quality of the recipients of the 2017 bursaries.

“They and their fellow recipients clearly show that our city is in good hands with such an exceptional group of young people to lead our community in the future.”

Emergency departments clogged by sunburn and splinter presentations New data released today shows that public hospital emergency departments are being clogged with requests for prescriptions and medical certificates, and with minor ailments like a common cold, sunburn and splinters.

Health Minister Cameron Dick said the unnecessary presentations to Queensland emergency departments is contributing to unpresented demand in the system, with 50,000 more presentations to EDs last year than in the previous.

“This has got to stop. The doctors and nurses within our emergency departments are highly trained to an international standard and are the best in their field,” the Minister said.

“They are there to save lives, not extract splinters or write prescriptions for patients who could be visiting their GP. “Queenslanders need to understand that if you arrive at an emergency department when you should be at the GP, you will wait. I make no apologies for that.

“If it’s not urgent, you should call or visit your GP, call 13 HEALTH or call the After Hours Home Doctor Service.”

Minister Dick said he was deeply concerned by the unprecedented growth right across the health system, but particularly the spike in emergency department presentations.

“I’ve asked the Director-General of the Department of Health to commence work on renewing our Keep Emergency for emergencies public information campaign,” Mr Dick said.

Queensland invests in meningococcal response More than 300,000 eligible 15-19 year old Queensland teenagers will have access to a free, four strain meningococcal vaccination from Term 2 of the current school year.

Health and Ambulance Services Minister Cameron Dick today announced the Palaszczuk Government would make $6M available for a 12 month vaccination program, following an increase in meningococcal serogroup W and Y notifications during 2016.

“While the best way to reduce the incidence of vaccine preventable diseases in Australia is through a national program, we have to act now to protect Queensland teenagers from this deadly disease,” the Minister said.

“Queensland and other states have acted swiftly to protect teenagers, however this has resulted in a patchwork immunisation regime across the country.

“This is not the best answer for our nation, particularly given Australians frequently travel between states and territories.

“I’m calling on the Commonwealth to act to replace the Meningococcal C vaccination on the National Immunisation Program with the four strain A, C, W and Y vaccine, to provide greater protection as the rates of meningococcal disease rise.”

Under the Palaszczuk Government’s plan, the four-strain vaccine will be available to every Queensland Year 10 school student as part of the school immunisation program. The Department of Health will also make the vaccine available free of charge via GPs and other immunisation providers for all Queenslanders aged 15 to 19.

Government extends interim ban on unsafe ethanol burners The Palaszczuk Government has extended the interim ban on the sale of unsafe ethanol burners.

The interim ban will now be extended by another 30 days, which all other Australian states and territories are also implementing.

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Yvette D’Ath said Queensland, along with all other Australian states and territories, banned the sale of certain types of ethanol burners in December last year following an increase in serious injuries from the devices. “Since 2011 there had been at least 117 incidents associated with ethanol burning devices in Australia, including 38 in Queensland,â€? Mrs D’Ath WWW.SEWEEKLY.COM.AU said. “These devices have caused numerous explosions and ash-back ďŹ res and the Palaszczuk Government has extended the interim ban to ensure the safety of Queenslanders, pending further investigation for a possible nation-wide ban.â€?

Mrs D’Ath said the Queensland OďŹƒce of Fair Trading had not received any reports of people being injured by these burners since the interim ban was issued in December. “Since the interim ban was imposed, product safety inspectors from the Queensland OďŹƒce of Fair Trading have worked closely with traders and visited over 100 retailers,â€? Mrs D’Ath said. “More than 60 unsafe ethanol burners have been removed from Queensland shelves. “However, if anyone purchased small portable ethanol burners prior to the interim ban, I urge them to reconsider using the devices.â€?

The interim ban applies to devices designed for domestic use producing a ame using alcohol as fuel, primarily for decorative purpose, excluding the following: those with a power output of more than 4.5 kW; or those that require installation in a ďŹ xed position; or those designed for food warming.

The OďŹƒce of Fair Trading will continue to enforce the interim ban in Queensland while the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission considers a national ban on unsafe ethanol burners.

Minister congratulates unbeaten AFLW Brisbane Lions Minister for Sport Mick de Brenni has congratulated Brisbane Lions unbeaten AFLW team after their first home game.

Speaking at the opening of the newly completed South Pine Sports Complex in Brendale, Mr de Brenni said the Australian Rules Football Womens (AFLW) competition has exceeded expectations.

“I think some people have been a bit surprised at how popular the competition has been so far,” Mr de Brenni said.

“But it’s no surprise to Queenslanders – this state is a powerhouse for football, and given the quality and the dedication of women’s AFL a top tier competition like this is well due.

Mr de Brenni said the Queensland Government invested $1 million in the South Pine Sports Complex upgrade, which will enhance player safety and enjoyment.

Discussion paper on Government ban plan for plastic bags will close soon Do you have something to say about a proposal to ban light-weight single-use plastic shopping bags?

The Palaszczuk Government’s public discussion paper on the proposal closes soon (Monday, 27 February), so go to www. ehp.qld.gov.au/waste to fill out an online survey or send in a written submission.

Environment Minister Dr Steven Miles said the discussion paper was released to ensure the community could have its say on this important issue.

“Littered plastic bags cost Queenslanders over $4 million a year in clean-up costs and take thousands of years to fully break down,” said Dr Miles.

“Plastic bags are one of the most visible rubbish items and pose real threats to land and marine environments.

“They often end up in waterways where they endanger marine life. They can also clog drains and waterways, leading to increased risk of flooding.

“This is why we’ve moved on our election commitment to take action on this issue.”

Dr Miles said the Palaszczuk Government had decided to start the litter-busting ban in 2018 – to coincide with its Container Refund Scheme.

“It’s a logical step from the CRS to introduce this initiative to bring about a vast reduction in the numbers of plastic shopping bags blowing in the wind, entering our waterways, harming our wildlife and spoiling our environment,” Dr Miles said.

“There are suitable alternatives available to replace these plastic bags and we will be working closely with the retail sector to ensure that these alternatives are readily available to consumers from day one of the ban.”

The light-weight plastic bags are already banned in South Australia, the Northern Territory, the Australian Capital Territory and Tasmania.

New horizons for young women leaving state care The future is looking bright for 50 young Queensland women who are receiving scholarships funded by the Palaszczuk Government.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the Care2Achieve scholarships, delivered in partnership with The Smith Family, would provide young women who have been children in care with up to $11,000 over four years for their education. “$1.2 million has been committed over the next five years to help these young women pursue further studies,” she said.

“In total we will see 100 young women benefit from these scholarships, with 50 recipients this year, and a further 50 next year.”

Child Safety Minister Shannon Fentiman said many young women leaving care often faced challenges that other young Queenslanders didn’t.

A recent report by NGO CREATE Foundation showed that only 47 per cent of young people aged 18 to 19 transitioning from care had completed Year 12.

In 2015 the Next Step Report found that out of a sample of children in outof-home care who finished Year 12, just 10.6 per cent went on to tertiary studies, 25.5 per cent continued on to VET courses, and 8.5 per cent undertook an apprenticeship or traineeship.

“While many teenagers stay at home past 18, foster children generally move out at that age and start to live independently as adults,” Ms Fentiman said.

“What this funding will do is to help level the playing field, making tertiary studies more affordable and feasible for our young women leaving care.”

“Aside from addressing their educational outcomes, these scholarships will also help tackle the issues of gender inequality and the ongoing gender pay gap.”

Three of those receiving the scholarships today, Susu Do, Sharna Norman and Jennifer Avyanna said the grant was an important milestone in their pursuit of higher education.

Jobs bonanza for Regional Queensland $200 million will kick off 723 projects and support almost 6,000 jobs across regional Queensland on economy-boosting infrastructure projects as part of the Palaszczuk Government’s Works for Queensland program.

Far North tourism will be boosted with upgrades to Tully’s Golden Gumboot, Babinda Boulders swimming hole and Yorkey’s Knob Esplanade; North Queensland will reap the benefits of important community infrastructure projects such as the city trees project in Townsville and an adventure playground in Ayr; and The Bundaberg region will be buzzing with job creating projects like new playgrounds, pool upgrades and roadworks.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the $200 million Works for Queensland initiative was part of a $1 billion investment in dedicated programs to create jobs and deliver infrastructure outside the State’s south-east.

“My Government knows the importance of regional Queensland to the prosperity of our State. By working with local councils, we can improve infrastructure and amenities for regional Queensland and create jobs in these communities for locals,” the Premier said.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Infrastructure and Planning Jackie Trad said the response to the program had been overwhelmingly positive.

“This program has been wholeheartedly embraced by councils across Queensland because they know it will deliver jobs and infrastructure for their communities,” Ms Trad said.

“Most importantly, these projects will deliver a jobs bonanza supporting almost 6,000 jobs in regional Queensland.”

“We’re delivering projects that will make our great regional communities even better places for people to live, work and raise their families.

“The Works for Queensland program has cut red tape meaning we are able to get these projects moving right now and deliver benefits for the region faster.”

Queensland’s Department of National Parks, Sport and Racing (NPSR) would like to hear from local community members who served time on the ex-HMAS Tobruk.

These recollections will form part of an interactive website being created by NPSR to promote the scuttling of the vessel to create an artificial reef and world-class dive site in waters off Hervey Bay. “Throughout the transformation of this historical icon to dive site, we want to make sure the stories of former servicemen and women are recognised and recorded for future generations,” Minister for National Parks and the Great Barrier Reef, Dr Steven Miles said.

“It’s important that those who served our great state and nation are given an opportunity to tell their story.

“Their tales will help to honour and understand the important role the HMAS Tobruk played in troop deployment and the movement of munitions and heavy transport equipment.”

A former medic who served on the HMAS Tobruk has reached out to share his story with the department.

Dr Brad Murphy created a memorial at his medical centre just outside of Bundaberg for veterans and ex-servicemen.

“Ashfield Country Practice is a mainstream general practice with a specialisation in aboriginal and veteran health.

“The memorial is a central feature of the surgery, surrounded by a garden to ensure that his patients feel comfortable when visiting.

“It is a great way to honour those who served, many of which are patients of mine,” Dr Murphy said.

Australian and Queensland governments working together to respond to white spot outbreak The Commonwealth and Queensland governments today reaffirmed their shared commitment to support prawn farmers impacted by White Spot virus and pledged to continue to work together to eradicate the disease.

Commonwealth Assistant Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources, Anne Ruston, and Queensland Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries, Bill Byrne, stated that dealing with the outbreak was one of the highest priorities for both governments.

“Minister Byrne and I have had extensive face to face discussions on the best way forward for the Queensland prawn industry,” Senator Ruston said.

“On our visits to the farms on the Logan River, we have both been struck by the determination and resilience of the farmers and we appreciate the need to maintain the closest co-operation to do all that is possible to get them back into production at the earliest opportunity.

Despite the tireless work that has been undertaken, it is disappointing that all prawn farms with stock on the Logan River have tested positive for the disease”, said Minister Byrne The national Aquatic Consultative Committee on Emergency Animal Diseases remains of the view that the disease can be eradicated.
