Cr Wendy Boglary elected Redland City’s new Deputy Mayor Councillors unanimously elected Cr Wendy Boglary as Redland City’s new Deputy Mayor at a Special Meeting today.

Logan City Council Roads and Water Infrastructure Committee Chairman, Councillor Phil Pidgeon, said the project was necessary to ensure the road was maintained in a good condition as the city’s population grows.

“The works involve upgrading the existing road surface between Moffatt Rd and Kingston Rd as well as through the roundabouts at Logan Reserve Rd and McGrath St,” he said.

“Works will be carried out in four stages, starting at Moffatt Rd and continuing east towards Kingston Rd. “This is a major project, and it will cause delays, so I ask people to take an alternative route while it’s completed.

“Traffic detours and road closures will be in place and drivers should allow extra time for their journey as well.”

Cr Pidgeon said Council would make every effort to reduce impacts on the local community and motorists as much as possible during the upgrade.

“We’ll notify residents and businesses well in advance of construction works and advise any alternative access arrangements that may be required,” he said.

Construction will generally be carried out during the day from Monday to Saturday, however some night works will occur to reduce traffic impacts.

The project is expected to be completed in late June, weather and construction conditions permitting.

Eats and Beats boogies on down to Beenleigh Beenleigh Town Square will host the next instalment of popular food truck and live music festival Eats and Beats this month.

This will be the third time in the past six months the travelling feast has visited Beenleigh.

City Image Committee Chairperson Cr Laurie Smith said the last visit to Beenleigh during the Christmas Eats and Beats series was a huge success.

“We’re really excited about this one because construction of the civic platform that forms part of the town square is about to finish, giving the event a dedicated stage for the music acts that will be performing on the night.”

Cr Smith said the event would also continue to offer a revolving cast of some of South-East Queensland’s best food trucks.

“We’ll have almost 30 food trucks set up next to the square and there are plenty of places to stretch out and eat dinner with your friends and family,” he said.

Chef Matt opens gateway to wine and food teaching

Twelve Queensland teachers were hoping they hadn’t bitten off more than they could chew when celebrity chef Matt Golinski put them through their culinary paces in Maroochydore today.

Mr Golinski, official chef for the Food, Wine and Tourism Gateway to Industry Schools Program, was joined by Training and Skills Minister Yvette D’Ath for a teacher workshop at Maroochydore State High School.

The chef has partnered with the Gateway Schools Program to share his knowledge and skills with the next generation of industry professionals.

“The program provides hands-on opportunities for students in hospitalityrelated industries with an eye to future careers,” Mrs D’Ath said.

“Maroochydore State High School is one of 32 Food, Wine and Tourism Gateway Schools, and is well suited to the role.

“The school’s Coastal Trade Training Centre has an industry-standard kitchen and extensive vocational education and training (VET) programs supported by an active VET reference group made up of industry, school and community representatives.

“Matt conducted a workshop at Windaroo Valley State High School earlier this week, and more will be held at trade training centres throughout the state this year including one in Cairns on Monday 18 April.”

“The workshop is limited to 12 participants due to the hands-on intensive nature of the work.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for teachers to pick up skills from a top-line chef.

“Having Matt on board is a real coup for the Food, Wine and Tourism Gateway Schools Project.”

“I hope to provide inspiration for the teachers, who can take it back and share it with their students.”

Scenic lookouts around Queensland will be spruced up thanks to a $3.2 million Palaszczuk Government program in the 2015 State Budget.

Tourism Minister Kate Jones said the Scenic Lookout Upgrade program would deliver a significant boost to drive tourism in Queensland.

“We are committed to growing Queensland tourism and this is another great way we are working with local councils to bring more tourists to regional Queensland,” Ms Jones said.

“This program encourages tourists to stop and take in the scenery in our regional areas and I’m confident it will encourage more visitors to visit Queensland and make sure they come back again.”

Up 28 lookouts will be spruced up across Queensland. Lookouts all over Queensland, from Stradbroke Island to Chinaman Creek Dam Reserve near Cloncurry, have been granted funding through this program.

Little Ship Club honours ANZACs The first of the next two long weekends will be especially memorable, across the Bay on Straddie, as LSC has been asked by the Dunwich RSL to take the salute at the ANZAC Day march-past on Monday 25th April on North Stradbroke Island.

“This request is a great honour,” said LSC Commodore Roger McDowall, “not only for myself as a Vietnam veteran but also for our boating organisation and the broader island community. Our Rear-Commodore’s late father served with the Army in New Guinea during the Second World War, and this is just the broadest brush-stroke glimpse of some of the many connections and deep roots which Little Ship Club has with Australia’s service men and women over many decades.”

The LSC, in fact, traces its origins to the aftermath of World War Two, and its formation, in 1951, from the ranks of the wartime Naval Auxiliary Patrol, whose members gave of their boating experience – and their vessels themselves – in the defence of Moreton Bay and Brisbane, during a conflict which directly threatened our shores.

“All those past enmities are now slowly being swallowed by the tides of history,” said Commodore McDowall, “but we must never lose the memories of those who gave their utmost to defend and preserve what later generations have come to enjoy in their lives today.”

Over on Straddie next Monday, the march-past sets off from Little Ship Club at 10am and formalities conclude after the laying of wreaths at the cenotaph.

The Club will be open from 12 noon for Members, guests and visitors to have a bite to eat from the Destroyer Bar menu and enjoy some freshly-baked home-made ANZAC biscuits, with normal trading hours from 1pm.

Club managers Julie and Craig Hackett are looking forward to whipping up a few trays of the tasty traditional fare: “After the dawn services and the Last Post, there’s something really special about biting into an ANZAC Biscuit that just makes you pause for another moment,” Julie said.

Last weekend, the Little Ship Club hosted its annual “Commodore’s at Home” events, including the traditional sail-past and blessing of the fleet – “bulwarks of the Club’s 65-year history” according to Commodore McDowall.
