Hooning in suburban streets to be targeted

Hooning in Logan’s suburban streets will be targeted using a new weapon that will provide police with real time vision that could lead to substantial fines or the confiscation of hoons’ vehicles.

Deputy Mayor Councillor Russell Lutton, said the City of Logan’s mobile CCTV surveillance capability would be used to provide police with high quality footage broadcast directly from trouble spots.

“Our mobile 24 hour video monitoring can provide the Queensland Police Service with valuable information on a wide range of anti-social behaviour including life-threatening motor vehicle offences,” Cr Lutton said.

“Evidence of irresponsible driving such as drifting, burnouts and street racing can now be relayed immediately to police to enable them to either catch drivers in the act – or identify vehicles and perpetrators long after they have fled the scene.

“Last weekend we targeted hooning in Flagstone following residents’ reports of persistent hooning in suburban streets late at night.”

“Residents can also help by reporting illegal driving (hooning) to the Queensland Police anti-hooning hotline on 13HOON (134666) providing a description of the offending vehicle, including registration numbers, date and time,” he said.

Government and graziers join forces to clean up Moreton Bay The Queensland Government will team up with graziers to improve Southeast Queensland’s water quality by introducing a $2.3 million Grazing Best Management Practice Program and Healthy Country Program.

Environment Minister Dr Steven Miles announced the initiative (18 January 2016) on behalf of the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection (EHP), SEQ Catchments and AgForce.

Dr Miles said both best practice grazing and riverbank and gully restoration were key components to reducing sediment and nutrient runoff that ends up in our waterways and Moreton Bay. “The Healthy Country Program, funded by EHP, is about the Palaszczuk Government and graziers working together to make a real difference to water quality in Moreton Bay, home to some of South-east Queensland’s most precious marine habitat,” Dr Miles said.

The $1.4 million replacement of Darcy Edmunds Bridge in the Jimboomba town centre has begun this week, creating a safer and more reliable link for businesses and residents in the growing region.

Logan City Council Roads and Water Infrastructure Committee Chairperson, Councillor Don Petersen, said the existing timber and concrete bridge on Brisbane St (near the intersection with Cusack Lane) had reached the end of its service life and was currently subject to a 25-tonne load restriction. “It needs to be replaced to ensure the safety of motorists and other bridge users in the future and support the ongoing economic development of Jimboomba and surrounding suburbs,� he said. “The project is being jointly funded from Council’s 2015/2016 Capital Roadworks and Drainage program and the Australian Government’s Bridges Renewal Programme, and I am very proud of the cooperation to get this strategic project started. “The bridge is an important link in the Jimboomba town centre and is frequently used by local people accessing the retail, school and commercial areas.�

Division 11 Councillor, Trevina Schwarz, welcomed the project and asked local residents and motorists for their patience while the project was completed. “The new bridge will open up transport routes that will support local businesses, residents and growth in the area,� she said. “The bridge will be closed while the replacement project occurs so it can be completed as quickly as possible. “Drivers will still be able to access Cusack Lane and its businesses as well as the Jimboomba Convenience Centre, and detours around the work zone will be provided.�

The project is expected to be completed in April 2016, weather and construction conditions permitting.

A small runaway campfire on Coochiemudlo Island this week is a timely reminder of the dangers and risk of open fires in fire season, particularly when they start on islands or isolated location.

This particular campfire also highlighted poor camper behaviour with vegetation damaged in making the campfire.

While there is no total fire ban in place in the Redlands, the outbreak from the un- extinguished overnight beach fire highlights the need to always follow camp fire safety precautions to avoid risk to people, especially children and to the environment.

You should: Always check with local fire, council or parks authorities on local fire restrictions before lighting any fires.

Always position campfires in cleared areas, away from overhanging branches, minimal grass and scrub.

Ensure the campfire is a safe distance from tents, camping equipment and flammable items such as gas and fuel.

Always use an available fireplace such as a barbeque pit or build a fire pit and surround it with large rocks.

Always keep the fire at a controllable size.

Never use any kind of flammable liquids (such as petrol) on a fire to get it started (can cause serious flash burns and risk of spread).

Always put out campfires with water when you have finished (hot coals will continue to burn for many hours even if covered by sand).

Never leave any campfire unattended for any period of time and always fully extinguish with water.

Immediately call 000 if you notice a fire getting out of control or risk to property and life.

Trade college a coup for Redland City Redland City students and businesses will soon be reaping the benefits of the Australian Industry Trade College’s new education facility at Cleveland.

Work on the college is complete with the first trainees starting on Wednesday 27 January.

Redland City Mayor Karen Williams, who inspected work on the new education facility today, said the independent co-educational senior college would provide huge benefits for the city. “This has been nearly three years in the making, so I am thrilled to see how far the new college at Toondah Harbour has progressed,’’ Cr Williams said. “Local students in years 11 and 12 will soon have access to high quality trade training and senior education that is proven to increase employment opportunities. And this means local businesses will soon be able to benefit from access to apprentices and trainees who are work ready. “It also comes at a very important time for the Redlands as crucial projects such as the $1.4 billion redevelopment of Toondah Harbour, a stone’s throw away, advances following the recent signing of an infrastructure agreement which will deliver $116 million of community improvements to the city. “This college will fill a real void in the area, with the AITC’s curriculum designed for the real world, allowing students to complete their Queensland Certificate of Education while training full time as a schoolbased apprentice. “It will be training local young people for local jobs in what will be a massive plus for local businesses and industry. In the past, too many young people have been forced to leave the Redlands to get this sort of training and to find work. “We’re looking forward to soon be working with Redland City Council, local registered training organisations and employers to expand our successful model to the city,� Mr Hands said.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk today launched Energex’s Battery Storage Trial and inducted 22 new Energex apprentices into the EsiTrain facility PG 16 at Rocklea.

Ms Palaszczuk said battery storage would be an important part of PG 16 mix in the decades ahead, which meant training up Queensland’s energy the next generation of electricians for the jobs of the future.

“New technologies like solar battery storage will dominate the next phase of the solar energy industry, and with it a whole new opportunity for new jobs,” Ms Palaszczuk said.

“These new recruits will gain first-hand experience with the latest technology as part of their training here at Rocklea, which only cements Energex’s reputation as producing some of the world’s top electricians.

Ready to go, Queensland tops the class with tertiary transport tech solution Students in South East Queensland will have the most convenient system in Australia for accessing tertiary public transport concessions, with the Palaszczuk Government today unveiling a new technology-based go card solution.

Minister for Transport Stirling Hinchliffe said the new simpler, online application process would be rolled out to replace the LNP’s Tertiary Transport Concession Card (TTCC) which was a bureaucratic nightmare for students and tertiary institutions.

“As promised the new go card solution, is the simplest, smartest and most integrated student concession travel in Australia,” Mr Hinchliffe said.

“We want Queensland’s students to be the best they can be, not lumbered with the extra paperwork of the past like it was under the LNP’s TTCC. “This announcement delivers on Labor’s election commitment to work with higher education providers and develop an alternative to the TTCC that eliminates the need for tertiary students to carry an extra card to access concession fares.

“By linking the tertiary concession to the go card we’ve put a system in place that means you won’t need to reapply every year for your concession and will be notified automatically if your eligibility changes.

“Instead of completing an annual paper-based application and waiting, like they had to with the LNP’s TTCC, tertiary and post-secondary students will be able to apply for concession fares on public transport with just the click of a button or a simple phone call.

Mr Hinchliffe said over the coming weeks, the number of institutions accepting online applications will increase as educational facilities in South East Queensland come on board with the new solution.

Queensland-based arts organisations delivering quality arts experiences can for the first time apply to receive four-year funding under the Palaszczuk Government’s revamped Organisations Fund, opening today, announced Premier and Minister for the Arts Annastacia Palaszczuk.

“Queensland is home to an exciting and diverse arts sector and now the Organisations Fund will offer companies an opportunity to secure funding from January 2017 to December 2020,” the Premier said.

“Four-year funding offers greater certainty and a secure base for organisations to realise strategic plans, grow and attract other income.

“Queensland’s small to medium arts organisations contribute significantly to the state’s arts and cultural offerings and also in the employment and promotion of our artists and arts workers.

“My government values the arts and is committed to supporting Queensland-based arts companies to develop sustainable business models so they can thrive.

“We are looking to fund organisations that provide diverse arts products and services and have established meaningful partnerships and connections with the broader community, businesses and industries.”

The Premier said the current three-year funding cycle for the Organisations Fund 2014-2016 provided funding of $21.2 million for 35 organisations.

The application process for the Organisations Fund will be in two stages with an initial Expression of Interest followed by an invitation to applicants to submit a Full Application and provide a face-to-face pitch to the independent assessment panel.

“The Organisations Fund is a competitive program and all submissions will be assessed by an independent panel,” she said.

Rapid Response Team mobilised following Yabulu redundancies

The Palaszczuk Government has mobilised a Rapid Response Team to assist 237 workers made redundant today at Queensland Nickel’s Yabulu refinery north of Townsville.

State Development Minister Dr Anthony Lynham said the rapid response team would connect workers with services to help secure their rights and entitlements, along with other services including financial advice and employment assistance.

“237 hardworking Queenslanders have lost their jobs through no fault of their own, and that’s a terrible way to start 2016,” Dr Lynham said.

“Our Rapid Response Team is already out there on the ground in North Queensland, connecting workers with a range of support services.

“These are tough time for these workers and their families, but there is help at hand and we’re on an all-out effort to give those affected the support they need.

“There are a range of services available to affected workers from the Queensland and Australian governments as well as Townsville City Council.

“Whether it’s putting people in touch with counselling services, helping them secure financial advice or assisting them to secure their entitlements, we’re here to help.”

Employment Minister Grace Grace said Queensland Nickel was a private company that made its own commercial decisions.

“Nevertheless, we won’t stop until every worker, and every family affected, has been given the support they need on the path back to employment,” she said.

Kathy Schaefer, Acting Director General of State Development will lead the team, which will be on the ground in Townsville this afternoon.
