What started out to be a small community celebration has grown into an attraction that draws literally thousands of people each year. Czech Days has become so popular and so well attended that it was listed in Top Events USA http://www.topeventsusa.com/ as one of the top 10 events to see in South Dakota in 2009. Czech Days was listed as one of the Five 2007 and 2008 Great Events selected by the South Dakota Office of Tourism, one of the top “20” June attractions in the nation according to AAA Travel magazine. The American Bus Association (ABA) in 1999 selected CZECH DAYS in Tabor, South Dakota, as one of the Top 100 Events in North America.
An added attraction for the past few years has been the Polka Mass at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday afternoon at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church. The Mass features area singers and musicians taking part in the Mass with traditional Czech music and songs being enjoyed by the many hundreds of worshipers filling the church. Many persons will be taking home fine souvenirs some of which the people of the community have prepared by hand. They have made records and tapes of their own 1890 Band, and initiated a kolace and roll baking demonstration both days in the Information Center. There is plenty of toe-tapping polka music being played throughout the celebration. The Keg usually hires a special band to provide “live music” for its customers during the celebration. There is a public dance - with a polka band included on the program for Saturday evening. One feature, which always attracts a large crowd, is the colorful parade held on Friday - a parade, free of rain, has the blessing of the weatherman most years. The Kiddie Parade takes place Saturday morning with many children dressed in their Czech costumes.
“Vitame Vas” “We Welcome You” To The
Thousands of dozens of the tasty Czech pastry, the kolace, are consumed by the visitors. Few go home without taking a dozen or two for the folks at home. There is the traditional Czech dance - “The Beseda” performed by 238 dancers in Sokol Park, young and old alike. The dancers dress in their colorful Czech costumes which their relatives in the Czech Republic and Slovakia might dress in. The Beseda Dancers were honored in 1999 during the two day celebration. Eight couples organized the first Beseda dancers in 1936. Members of the first group were Mr. and Mrs. K. L. Szymanski, Mr. and Mrs. Anton Cacek, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Soukup, and Mr. and Mrs. Jim Schuch.
