LIBRARY SCIENCE Library Science is an online book club created

by Kaia Gerber and Alyssa Reeder meant to platform underrated or lesser-known books and newer authors, from fiction to nonfiction, essays, and plays. Many of the selected works focus on themes like sex, love, girlhood, beauty, and being.

Gerber hosts conversations with various actors, authors, or musicians to develop a more complex understanding of the work and to uncover new perspectives.

On the club’s Instagram page, they post short clips from the conversations, curated and diverse reading lists, and quotations or inspirations from various authors. I really enjoy the diverse array of books read and recommended through the club, and particularly the amount of fiction that comes from non-English-speaking authors. Gerber offers insightful commentary, and I always feel like I learn something new whenever I listen to the conversations.

FASHION NEUROSES I have not been hooked on a podcast in years.

The sheer number of voices and options leaves the podcast sphere oversaturated and often uninteresting, yet there was a time when I looked forward to sitting down with my favorite podcast and its hosts each week. Now, long-form podcasts seem to only serve as the raw material for the fast-paced, quippy short-form content cut from them.

Recently, however, Bella Freud’s Fashion Neurosis has slowly drawn me in, providing calm and reflective — yet not over-manicured — long-form content. Freud is better known for her eponymous clothing brand, yet as a host, she subtly shines as a rare agent of slow deliberation, vulnerability, and peacefulness.

The podcast format requires guests to lie on Freud’s sofa in her West London home as she films and records their conversations in a mock psychiatrist-patient setup. From fashion industry staples like Alex Consani, Kate Moss, and JW Anderson to writers, musicians, and artists like Ocean Vuong, Zadie Smith, and Julianne Moore, Freud has a knack for soothing and engaging both her guests and listeners — without background music or attention-seeking edits.

Using fashion choices and the psychology behind them as a jumping-off point, the conversations often delve into the quirks and neuroses that exist in all of us, regardless of celebrity status.

FRYE BOOTS I recently bought a pair of Frye boots, and now I’ve been looking for every excuse to wear them.

The color is so unique, and I really understand the excitement around them because they’re so versatile and can be paired with any outfit.

I also think that it’s a worthwhile investment to buy a nice pair of boots that can take you through many stages in your life. As I’ve been creeping closer and closer to college graduation, I’ve been trying to craft a post-grad wardrobe that includes more than just crop tops and sneakers. A pair of boots is a great staple to have in any closet.

Adding boots to an ensemble is a great way to make an outfit look classier and more sophisticated. Frye boots are also a well-made shoe that should last me a while, and a timeless look that won’t go out of style.

“JUST WEARING, NOT STYLING” The concept of “just wearing, not styling” my clothes has changed my outlook on dressing myself and picking my outfit in the morning. In typical “wearing vs styling” videos, the styled versions of outfits are fully accessorized, paired with a full face of makeup and hair done. Although I still love curating my outfits and style, even if I’m just going to class or a Thread meeting, the concept of “just wearing” my clothes — throwing them on and chalking an outfit up to something as basic as, ‘jeans and a sweater,’ has reminded me that just picking clothes that make me feel comfortable and confident is enough, all the extra stuff is just for fun.

Along with this, the idea of being able to “just wear” my clothes has helped me shop more mindfully. My clothing items should stand on their own, both style-wise and quality-wise. A plain black sweater shouldn’t need a fancy tuck or overdone jewelry to look put together, but the 6 | THREAD

option to upstyle will always be there. Picking clothes that I feel comfortable enough to “just wear” ensures I can rewear an item and not rebuy a similar thing in a couple of months to fit a slightly different trend or style. By buying clothes, I am able to “just wear, not style,” also means I still have the option to dress them up or accessorize differently when I want to, and wear these pieces on different occasions.

The concept of “just wearing” my clothes also reminds me to simply exist and wear what is comfortable to me without feeling the need to perform, show off, or fit in all the time. Seeing more of these simple outfits, which are practical for the busy college student, highlighted on social media, is a reminder that social media isn’t real life and it’s okay to just exist outside of microtrends or fast fashion.

MOVIE THEATERS Any evening I don’t have plans, I head to The Athena Cinema on Court Street to catch whatever’s playing. Sometimes I bring friends, and other nights I take myself on a solo date and just enjoy the movie.

While streaming them from the comfort of your home might be convenient, it doesn’t immerse you in the film’s world like watching it on the silver screen does. It’s a bigger, brighter, and better movie-going experience.

Some new releases include “Wicked: For Good,” “Zootopia 2,” “Five Nights at Freddy’s,” and “Avatar Fire and Ash,” so there’s really no excuse. Grab a slurpee and some popcorn and head to your local movie theater — You won’t regret it.

RADIOHEAD

Radiohead is the perfect melodramatic apocalyptic synthwave soundtrack for winter.

They blend brutalist soundscapes with newage synth textures, creating something both unsettling and strangely comforting. It’s the kind of duality only Radiohead can pull off, icy atmospheres wrapped around melodies that feel deeply human.

Part of what makes them so compelling is their range. Each album offers a distinct composition style and a fully realized world, yet all of them feel connected by the band’s evolving sensibilities.

As Radiohead ages, their albums shift in tone and perspective, almost like chapters in a long, introspective novel. Every record carries its own story, and each one finds you at different moments in your life, speaking to you differently over the years.

Beyond their technical mastery, Radiohead endures because their music gives shape to emotions that resist explanation. They speak to uncertainty, longing, and the quiet discomforts of everyday existence. Their songs don’t try to solve those feelings; instead, they make space for them, offering a soundtrack for reflection.

Radiohead is the band that makes you cry at 2 a.m., letting the weight of their sound wash over you. But they’re also the band that lets you blast “Jigsaw Falling Into Place” on long night drives, shouting every lyric with cathartic clarity.

MAKING COFFEE AT HOME Something that I have been really enjoying recently is making my own coffee at home. I have always loved coffee and caffeine, of course, and even more now as a college student balancing many things at once. I still love to get my random coffees from the shops I love here in Athens, but I have a newfound love for the routine of making my own. Not only is it more cost-effective, but I have really enjoyed tapping into the art of finding what I like most in my coffee. Trying out different creamers, syrups, and K-Cup combinations has become a fun routine of mine. Even on days when I do not have a lot going on, making myself a fun latte always makes me feel a little more productive. I highly recommend exploring your coffee taste by making your own coffee sometimes; you will grow to enjoy it even more than the experience of going to a coffee shop.

CROCHETING My favorite hobby is crocheting. I have been obsessed with making my own clothes since high school, and crocheting is a fun way to create unique pieces. I notice crochet gets a bad rep online because people’s minds go to traditional granny squares. Even though I appreciate a nice granny square once in a while, I know they are not for everyone. Once I immersed myself in the art of crocheting, I learned just how much I could make. From hats to sweaters to shorts, I have made it all. Although crocheting does not help with my Pinterest addiction, causing me to scroll

through hundreds of projects I want to start, it is a nice skill to have. I am challenging myself to invest in sustainable products, especially during the holiday season. I want to give gifts that are personalized, but something my friends and family can use repeatedly. My way of giving sustainable gifts is crocheting different items out of natural fibers such as cotton. I challenge everyone reading this to create rather than consume this holiday season.

STUDIO GHIBLI’S “THE TALE OF THE PRINCESS KAGUYA” “The Tale of the Princess Kaguya” is a Studio Ghibli film released in 2013. Being the last work of Director Isao Takahata, the film tells the story about a young girl born from a bamboo flower and discovered by a woodsman. She is raised by the woodsman and his wife, becoming one with the surrounding community and finding herself a happy life there. When the woodsman finds gold in the forest while foraging for bamboo, he realizes it is a sign to move to the capital.

Tossed into a socialite life, Kaguya has to face the hardships of leaving her home and finding herself in a place where she feels she does not belong. Based on 10th-Century Japanese folktale “Taketori Monogatari” — also known as “The Tale 10 | THREAD

of the Bamboo Cutter” — mixed with a beautiful animation style with line drawing and watercolor mediums, the film manages to tell its story while delivering exquisite visuals. It brings a sense of joy just to watch even with the heavy topics portrayed due to the personalities of the main characters with help from the vibrant and flowing animations. Although it stands at a runtime of 2 hours and 17 minutes, the film does not drag nor feel like it is 2 hours long and wraps up with a beautiful yet heartbreaking finale. “The Tale of the Princess Kaguya” is a must for everyone’s watchlist no matter your familiarity with Studio Ghibli.

Editor’s Note Welcome to our second issue of the year! My name is Gabrielle Cabanes, and it is my greatest honor to be this year’s editor-in-chief. This issue has been such an incredible success, and I am so pleased to finally be able to share it with you.

For our issue, we decided to look into such an important part of our life here at Ohio University, nighttime. Whether looking at what things we wear when we go out to the bars or learning more about late-night talk show hosts like Stephen Colbert, this issue has everything you could possibly think of in terms of after-hours. A note of appreciation to our wonderful photo chief, Disha Hoque, for pitching this idea. Your enthusiasm regarding this beautiful masterpiece lit up the room when you first spoke about it. We are so excited to see it come to life.

For our middle of the book shoots for this issue, we decided to look at different ways nighttime can be used. Our first shoot focused on the art of getting ready. A ritual often sacred to so many college students preparing for a night of fun. So make yourself a little cocktail, turn on your playlist, and get ready for the rest. Our next shoot revolved around the Y2K going out scene. With the resurgence of popularity in the Y2K trend, we wanted to showcase how the baddies of the 2000s really made it happen. Next, our “Midsummer Nights Horror” shoot gave nighttime a terrifying twist.

Let’s just say you should be frightened walking around The Ridges at night. Our spooky and fabulous models might just come out to play. Finally, last but not least, our “All In” shoot showcased life at the poker table. I can’t even begin to express how lucky we are.

Everyone at Thread has been so committed to truly bringing this wonderful issue to life.

Whether it was thoroughly editing pieces, standing out in the freezing cold and taking pictures or beautifully illustrating and designing pages, everyone at Thread puts so much passion into their work, and this issue, like all the others before, is a reflection of hard work.

nown for breaking fashion’s boundaries with collections full of rebellion and theatrics, Alexander McQueen was no stranger to oddness. His 2001 Fall collection, “What a Merry-Go-Round,” fit the bill. On Feb. 21, 2001, the rundown Gatliff Road Warehouse in London became the unlikely stage for McQueen’s spectacle. Complete with a working carousel, dim lighting, and a charged atmosphere, the models stomped onto the runway.

Reflecting the chaotic nature of the fashion industry, McQueen used this collection as a metaphor for his own experiences with nightmares while exploring the tension between childhood and fear. Vintage silhouettes infused with McQueen’s signature edge ran throughout the collection. Models appeared in dark, militaristic clothing, flapper-style haircuts, ghostly clown makeup, and eccentric but sensual designs. The show came straight out of a child’s nightmare of the circus. The eerie soundtrack from “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang,” featuring the Child Catcher’s voice, echoed through the warehouse, while cobwebs, dust, and glitter created a sense of forgotten nostalgia. The designs drew inspiration from films such as “Nosferatu” (1922) and “Cabaret” (1972).

The models’ aggressive, stonefaced walks contrasted with their almost playful attire, embodying the idea of vulnerability hidden behind toughness. The finale cranked up the drama; one model appeared in clown makeup and a dress adorned with a gold skeleton at her feet, while others dragged balloons or carried scissors — a metaphor for cutting free from the chaos of childhood.

In attendance were notable figures like Anna Wintour, Domenico De Sole, Kate Moss, and McQueen’s mother, Joyce McQueen. Models included Malin Persson, Anja Rubik, Omahyra Mota, Erin Wasson, and Karen Elson.

McQueen said, “We show children clowns as if they are funny. They’re not. They’re really scary.” The carousel at the center of the show symbolized the ride his career had been in the preceding year. In 2015, Dazed magazine described “What a Merry-Go-Round” as one of McQueen’s darkest shows, exhibiting his genius for transforming fear into beauty.

I

n 2007, John Galliano’s Fall/Winter readyto-wear show not only blurred the lines between runway and reality, but it also showed the difference between Parisian days and nights. Models glided down the catwalk, draped in cloche hats, layered slips, and coats that could have stepped out of Montmartre midnight cafes at their peak in the 1930s. Their cloche hats tilted low, and their coats hung heavy with mystery. Layered slips shimmered under the lights like reflections on wet cobblestone. Galliano did not just design for simplicity; he designed for storytelling. Each look carried a sense of drama, romance, and rebellion.

Nearly two decades later, that spirit feels strikingly current. As pop culture bends towards self-expression over simplicity, artists like Chappell Roan echo Galliano’s theatrical energy. Her latex corsets, feathered silhouettes, and glittered veils feel born from the same late-night glamour that Galliano once celebrated. David Bowie’s influence lingers too, with his androgynous glam-rock persona living in every

exaggerated costume and gender-fluid flourish.

Galliano’s 2007 collection anticipated a shift back to “character dressing.”

This is the idea that fashion, like nightlife, is a form of transformation. In a world still chasing minimalism and perfection, his designs offered something else: the beauty of being bold, imperfect, and alive.

Today’s beauty and fashion trends, from “soft grunge glam” to “hyper-feminine camp,” carry traces of his influence. “The joy of dressing is an art,” Galliano said. The art thrives in the glow of city nights, where identity is fluid and fashion embodies performance.

In 2025, the Galliano muse still steps out, not onto a museum runway, but into the neon-lit streets, onstage and across social media. His legacy continues wherever self-expression meets the thrill of the night.

litter, feathers, fur, animal print, and many other bold fashion statements can only be attached to one= person: Kesha.

Kesha Rose Sebert is an American singer and songwriter who changed the pop music industry in 2009 with her debut song, “TikTok.” The flashy, messy, and upbeat sound of the song was not the only thing that helped her break out — her fashion elevated her music.

With neon body suits, purple fur coats, and layered ripped fishnets, Kesha could be identified with a single glance in her direction. Bold colors splattered across her face with a messy, glittery, smoky eye was just the beginning of a style revolution in the early 2010s. She consistently strutted the red carpet in surprising and utterly unique looks, from her bleached blonde hair teased to the sky to abstract makeup looks and garments.

At the 2011 Wireless Festival in London, she arrived with a bedazzled skeleton body suit, ripped fishnets, and platform boots covered in silver glitter, complemented by her signature bleached blonde hair, feather accessories, and silver makeup.

For the past decade, at 11:30 p.m. EST on nearly every weekday, Stephen Colbert has greeted millions of viewers through their televisions.

Colbert is a generational talent. Younger generations may remember the illusion and haze of late-night television, saved for the moments when bedtime was forgotten, that seemed effervescent and impossible to attain in childhood. They may remember the laughs of their parents and grandparents at jokes not quite understood, or references to obscure moments appreciated only by night owls. They may remember growing up and finally catching their first late-night television sketch, wafting in the shared joy of comedy. In many cases, they may have grown alongside Colbert’s career, unknowingly acting as a patron of his success, but he had to start somewhere.

Colbert was born in Washington on May 13, 1964, to a Catholic family and raised in South Carolina as the youngest of 11 children. He is proudly 15/16 Irish and had a conservative upbringing.

In 1974, Colbert’s father and two of his brothers, Paul and Peter, died in a plane crash. This, and the consequent move of his family, fundamentally changed him.

He looked to science fiction and fantasy novels and games to escape the world around him, a hobby that acted as his first foray into improvisation.

Throughout his childhood, he participated in several school plays. Despite his interest in performing continuing to grow as he aged, he went to college for philosophy in 1982. Yet, he found himself unable to drop the performance bug.

Two years later, Colbert transferred from Hampden–Sydney College in Virginia to Northwestern University to study theater, where he joined the “No-Fun Mud Piranhas” improv group.

After graduating, Colbert traversed around Hollywood, working as a cast

member and writer on a myriad of sketch comedy shows. Colbert’s career “break” came in 1997, when he was hired as a correspondent and writer for “The Daily Show.”

At “The Daily Show,” Colbert found a niche by parodying politicians. His character satirized right-wing commentators and cable news pundits. He appeared frequently on the show until 2005, when he left to host a spinoff series.

“The Colbert Report” ran from 2005 to 2014. The show opened with an average of 1.2 million viewers during its first week.

Its simple structure — an introductory monologue followed by a guest interview — kept viewers coming back for more.

In 2015, Colbert took over for David Letterman on “The Late Show.” Since then, it has been the highest-rated late-night talk show in America for nine seasons and exceeds even “The Tonight Show” in viewership. With 1,713 episodes total, Colbert has cemented himself in television history.

Earlier this year, it was announced that “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” and the franchise itself would be retired for financial reasons. Specific reasoning has not been shared, but it is suspected the cancellation is due to a merger of CBS’s parent company, Paramount, with Skydance, as well as a political motive following Trump’s second coming to power.

No matter the reason for the cancellation, one thing is evident: Colbert made his mark across the world. He has five species and a treadmill on the International Space Station named after him. He developed the ice cream flavor “AmeriCone Dream” with Ben & Jerry’s, a product which donates all proceeds to various charities, and he is the recipient of numerous Emmy Awards, Grammy Awards, and Peabody Awards.

No one has defined American late-night television quite like Colbert, and it is safe to say, no one ever will.

ne of the most prolific American filmmakers of the past nearly 50 years, the late David Lynch’s profound and psychologically confounding work has and will continue to inspire bizarre and darkly creative minds. His filmography touches on themes of underlying morbidity in seemingly idyllic communities, psychological torment, and the power of dreams.

From his best-known works like “Twin Peaks,” “Blue Velvet” (1986), and “Mulholland Drive” (2001), to those lesser-known like “Wild at Heart” (1990) or “The Elephant Man” (1980), Lynch masterfully creates surrealist dreamscapes and nightmares that reveal layers of complexity regarding American society. The term “Lynchian nightmare” emerges from the provocation of fear, dread, and uncanny presence throughout his work.

Lynch was born in January 1946 in Missoula, Montana, but moved around to other states throughout his adolescence due to his parents’ work.

After entering and dropping out of various colleges, Lynch found himself a student at the American Film Institute, where he produced his first full-length film, “Eraserhead” (1977). The film, a black-and-white dystopian cult classic, follows a man as he must care for a strangely deformed and incessantly wailing baby in a bleak and lonely industrial setting. The woman living within the man’s radiator sings a tune about how “In Heaven, everything is fine.”

This was just a first glimpse at Lynch’s nightmarish worlds. In one of his most provocative works, “Blue Velvet,” he flashed a strobe light onto the seedy underbellies of American suburbia. A severed ear in a field leads to the discovery of an abusive and ultraviolent criminal ring hidden within a suburban community in North Carolina.

Jeffrey Beaumont and Sandy Williams uncover the torment of a nighttime lounge singer named Dorothy Vallen by psychopathic gangster Frank Booth, who demands she sing Bobby Vinton’s haunting ‘60s rendition of the song “Blue Velvet.”

Lynch continued his depictions of the deplorable and unsettling nighttime and strange connections to dreams in the television series “Twin Peaks.” Returning to his home in the Pacific Northwest, “Twin Peaks” occurs in the eponymous town in Washington. Following

the murder of high schooler Laura Palmer, FBI special agent Dale Cooper, amidst a wonderful cast of distinct characters, must uncover the mystery of who killed her.

“Twin Peaks” redefined what a television show could look like. Lynch interweaves surrealist pockets, such as a pure white horse appearing and disappearing in the Palmer family living room, or the infamous “red room,” where every person inside speaks in a reversed jumble, through each episode of the series. The show also depicts “the evil that men do” at night in the quaint community: exploiting young girls.

Further, Agent Cooper harnesses the messages hidden in his dreams to slowly uncover the truth of Twin Peaks. He says in episode three of season one, “I awoke from that dream realizing that I had subconsciously gained knowledge of a deductive technique.”

While so distinctly and visually recognizable, Lynch’s work demands layers upon layers of analysis, and is something so many try to “figure out.” When people asked him to explain the meanings behind his works, he replied with a stern “no.”

There are remnants of Lynch embedded everywhere in pop culture today. Television shows like “Bates Motel,” “Gravity Falls,” and even “Riverdale” are littered with Lynchian references, and musical artists like Lana Del Rey and Beach House cite Lynch as an inspiration.

It is difficult to briefly encompass the vast impact on film that Lynch had during his career, particularly after his passing in January. His work will certainly continue to inspire other macabre minds and force his viewers to reckon with the discomfort of the bizarre, the surreal, and the subconscious.

For most Ohio University students, a night out almost always ends with a stop at one of the many eateries offered on Court Street. Heated debates can ensue when students discuss where the best place to get a greasy slice of pizza is or which spot feels most like home at 2 a.m. after a long night on Court Street. OU students are passionate about their food choices, and they aren’t afraid to show it. Here’s a rundown on the most popular late-night food stops on Court Street and what some OU students had to say about them.

Ohio University students and Athens locals love Goodfella’s so much that somehow they manage to successfully operate two locations less than half a mile apart.

“I like Goodfella’s because it’s open late, and it’s just super convenient to grab a slice or two, especially with friends after a long night, or if you’re in a pinch,” Max Kornblut, a media arts production and history graduate, said. “My goto is just pepperoni pizza, one to two slices.”

Its tagline is “preventing hangovers and providing a great meal since 1995,” and it gets its name from the 1990 Robert De Niro film, which you can find a poster of inside. Just one slice of pizza is $3.50, but people love Goodfella’s and are willing to pay for it.

O’Betty’s has been a beloved part of Court Street since its opening in 2003. Its quirky and vibrant charm brings customers flocking to its walk-up window.

“O’Betty’s to me after a night out is life,” Ali Wilson, a senior English education major, said.

“It is what I need. It is everything and more. It is better than Jesus Christ himself. [I get] chili cheese fries with two sour creams.”

The restaurant is open for dining in, but only offers pickup after 8:30 p.m. If you get a chance to eat in, you can visit the “Wonderful Wacky Hot Dog Museum” that is housed inside. You can create just about any combination of toppings on your hot dog and fries. Vegetarian hot dogs are offered, as well!

Souvlaki’s is the heart of fried food on campus.

The owners, who have become affectionately known as “Mama and Papa Souvlaki.” They serve many college students each night, intoxicated and sober, and do so very efficiently.

“Souvlaki’s is a great late-night munch,” Jon Kushman, a senior entrepreneurship major, said.

But, due to the restaurant’s popularity, it can be quite a long wait despite the staff’s efficiency.

That may be a turn-off for someone looking for food immediately after the bars close or after wrapping up a late-night study sesh. Also, it should be noted that unless you are paying with cash, you will end up having to order more than you previously expected due to their $12 card minimum. They have appetizers like fried pickles and macaroni and cheese bites, as well as their entrée options: gyros and pita sandwiches. You can even order a whole pickle, which they will get from the large jar they keep on the counter.

“When I come to Souvlaki’s, I always get the ribeye gyro because the meat in the ribeye gyro always tastes really great, and I always get everything on it. You know, the authentic Greek experience,” Kushman said. “And it’s so cheap and inexpensive.”

Courtside Pizza, which is located inside Courtside bar, is popular for many reasons, convenience being one.

“Courtside is the best place to go after a night out because you don’t actually have to go inside,” said Allyson Moore, a senior marketing major.

Pizza can be ordered at the counter within the bar or outside at the walk-up window that faces the street. It offers various types of pizza, as well as salads and subs.

“You can go to the walk-up window for cheap and good pizza. Normally, I just get a pepperoni slice, but if they have it, I’ll get buffalo chicken,” Moore said.

Although this is a chain and doesn’t necessarily have any of that local Athens charm, Jimmy John’s is a tried and true option to finish out your night. Be aware, they close at 1 a.m., an hour before the bars do. There’s nothing worse than coming face to face with a locked door and a “closed” sign when you’re desperate for some grub, so plan accordingly if you’re craving a sub.

“There’s something comforting about knowing Jimmy John’s will always be there.

Like, emotionally,” Madeline Volker, a senior environmental studies major, said. “I always end up ordering the Beach Club with no mayo. I feel like it understands me.”

The mocktail nods to the classic Cosmopolitan but swaps vodka for magnesium, tart cherry juice, and sparkling water. Instructions: Step 1: Heat Ben’s Original Ready Rice according to the packaging. Open the bag halfway to vent. The standard heating time is typically 90 seconds. Let the rice stand for one minute and remove from the microwave.

Step 2: Put half a container of rotisserie chicken in the microwave-safe bowl. Heat the chicken for approximately 45 seconds or until warm. Remove the chicken from the microwave.

Step 3: Dump the bag of rice into the microwave-safe bowl with the chicken. Mix with a fork.

hile in a dorm room, cooking can be difficult, especially without access to a kitchen in every residence hall.

Students living in university housing may find the dining hall repetitive and want something “home-cooked” for a change. There are a few really great options for cooking in the comfort of your dorm room.

Chicken and rice is an easy, inexpensive dish to replicate in a residence hall microwave. There are only a few simple ingredients you need to grab from your local grocery store.

Step 4: Take 1/4 cup of mild cheddar shredded cheese, dump it into the bowl, and mix with a fork. Heat the bowl for 10 more seconds to melt the cheese. Remove the bowl from the microwave.

Step 5 (Optional): Add a pinch of Mrs. Dash Seasoning: Table Blend to the bowl. Mix with a fork.

Step 6: Top the dish with more cheese and a tablespoon of sour cream.

a welcome departure from Athens’ bar culture

or the current generation of young adults and college students in Athens, a night out typically involves bar hopping, house shows, or frat parties. While events at The Kava Bar, Donkey Coffee, and The Union Bar often decenter drinking from their agenda, nightlife in Athens continues to lack diverse nighttime activities and environments.

Nick Muntean, owner and operator of The Star Chamber Arcade, saw this gap in Athens nightlife as an opportunity to cater to all demographics outside of the standard bar scene. The Star Chamber Arcade is located just behind Hot Box Chicken Fingers and Tots and houses a wide, rotating selection of arcade and pinball games. All of the games are accessible for $7 per hour 108 | THREAD

of open gameplay.

“I knew 50-year-old hipsters would like pinball, and I knew that there’d be some college students who, even if they didn’t actually sincerely like the games, just enjoyed the retro nostalgia of the thing, right?” Muntean said. “So far, it seems to be hitting. We’re a month in, and we did better than I thought we would.”

The arcade attracted loyal followers and curious passersby alike. Jack Hillman, a 2025 graduate of Ohio University’s psychology program, began working at The Star Chamber since their initial opening.

“We’ve got a lot of regulars with their favorite machines, all across the board,” Hillman said.

While the games are the star of the show,

Muntean also stocked the bar with a variety of canned THC, alcoholic, and non-alcoholic beverages, as well as Perry’s Ice Cream.

For some, the cramped, alcoholdependent, and often monotonous social interactions of the Athens bar scene have gotten old. While the Athens bars are essential to student life, Muntean was happy to provide a new type of social space for all Court Street customers. “[The] C.I. and Stephen’s are very sweaty meat markets, right? And if you want to partially escape the nasty objectification of that sort of ritual space. This [The Star Chamber] is not that, right?” Muntean said.

The arcade’s quick success and customer base seemed to reflect the need for alternative spaces in Athens.

“Demographically, it’s actually been, probably, 55/45 girls to guys,” Muntean said. “The fact that the female college students have kind of found it more rapidly than the guys is, I think, telling about the nature of bar culture on Court Street.”

While liquor and alcohol sales are a sure-fire way to attract business in college towns, The Star Chamber is focused on being a profitable small business within the entire Athens community rather than just the OU bubble.

“I’m not going to get rich from doing this.

I knew that going into this … I think all the chains that are going to be here are going

to cater towards college students primarily,” Muntean said. “Ask anybody who’s not a student, and they will lament — yeah, the socioeconomic lifeblood of non-studentcentric Athens is kind of like atrophy.”

Outside of Athens, Muntean also established a network of fellow arcade owners, technicians, and collectors. On The Star Chamber’s Instagram account, @thestarchamberarcade, Muntean chronicled his many miles across the U.S., building his arcade game surplus.

During one of his trips to Beaver, Pennsylvania, a particular seller’s consideration and enthusiasm struck him.

“I took a picture of him.

I was like, I really have to start documenting …

There’s a story behind every one of these,” Muntean said.

Since then, Muntean has shared the stories of many others, along with photos of sellers with their games.

Muntean’s genuine zeal and talent for strengthening community networks are evident online, in person, and inside the arcade.

The Star Chamber is one of the few places setting the precedent for community-invested businesses, hopefully showing that there is a market in Athens for social establishments not centered around alcohol.

As the nights grow longer and the winter weather pushes many indoors, The Star Chamber comes at an opportune time, providing a distinct nightlife experience for all in the Athens community.

Its boisterous nightlife has made countless headlines over the years, and each year, students and alumni crowd these venues on numerous occasions. While the bars are frequented throughout the hours of the night, it leaves many to wonder which places are bustling throughout the day.

The bar scene is not the only highly awarded aspect of Athens’ campus. Donkey Coffee and Espresso, a notoriously delicious and cherished coffee spot, has been serving the folks of Athens for the past 22 years. Whether it's making specialty coffees or cocktails, it's easy to forget the workers of these notorious spots are students navigating their own lives and busy schedules.

Taking a look at the workers of these contrasting scenes in Athens, let’s begin by examining the daily routine of the morning shift. Jo Kulina, a senior studying studio art, started working at Donkey last Spring.

Her busiest days are often Saturdays, which she starts off with breakfast or the Athens Farmer’s Market before her shift at 1:45 p.m.

“Usually, I end up going in a little bit early. Not 110 | THREAD

even to work, but just to hang out and journal, or read or something, or do homework,” Kulina said.

Alongside the friendly atmosphere Donkey provides for the workers, she finds other perks in her barista job.

“A customer noticed the other day that we all — all the baristas at Donkey — just end up hanging out there with each other, even when they're not working, which I really like. I think a big reason is because we get to have free drinks whenever we want, and so everybody's always going in for their free drinks,” Kulina said.

Kulina shared some of her favorite drinks to get at Donkey, which provides both coffee and non-coffee beverage options.

“My favorite non-caffeinated drink is a ginger hibiscus iced tea with berry and lavender syrup and lemon juice,” said Kulina. “My favorite latte is probably a white chocolate cinnamon latte.”

She finds that on days she works, she can even come in a little early for some extra hours.

“There's a bunch of other miscellaneous jobs that people can have at Donkey, like cleaning the shop, or doing chai bags, things like that,

or baking the night before,” said Kulina. “It's nice to make extra money.”

On Kulina’s Saturday shifts, it’s usually jampacked until around three or four. After the day rush, she’s able to work around the shop.

“Usually, the hours, six to nine, everybody goes home for dinner, and it's more chill. And so, it's not like non-stop drink making. And then there's this extra cleaning list to prepare the shop for being closed that the people who are working between six and nine do, since it's less busy,” said Kulina.

After working all day into the night on her shift, Kulina usually ends up going to bed after she gets off. For many bartenders, this is when their shift is just beginning.

Emma Meinke, a senior studying marketing and a bartender at North End Kitchen and Bar, sometimes finds herself clocking in at 9:45 p.m. On other days, she works happy hour from 3 to 10 p.m.

On taco Tuesdays, when Meinke works happy hour, she often fills her day with a packed schedule before she clocks in.

“I'll go to the gym early in the morning, and then I get home and I eat breakfast. And then I go to my first class, which is at 9:30….I have

three back-to-back. So, after that, I'll go to my 11 a.m. and then I go to my 12:30,” Meinke said.

Meinke finds her morning walk or exercise is sometimes the only self-care she gets on these long days.

“The gym and going on a walk, I try to prioritize that every single day,” Meinke said.

“That's my time for me to just not think about anything else.”

Meinke feels her Tuesday shifts have a great atmosphere, and often draw in many customers because of their deals.

“We have $4 margaritas on Tuesdays, which is fun and a good environment. We have a lot of regulars, too,” Meinke said. “Even on the weekdays, it's a thing here which is fun.”

As a bartender amidst the boisterous OU nightlife, Meinke finds enjoyment in these crowds.

“I mean, going out [at OU] versus other colleges … Everybody just loves to have a good time here. There's always something going on,” Meinke said.

Whether it's a vodka soda or a vanilla latte, the students of OU are working countless hours to make these campus spots the ones that are known and loved so dearly.

Safety, The Less Glamorous Side Of A Night Out

hio University’s reputation precedes it; it is one of the top 20 party schools in the nation, according to Niche.com’s 2026 ranking. And while it may be up for debate if OU students still have the ability to party like they used to, one thing is not up for debate: students on campus like to have fun.

From HallOUween and Court Street bars to springtime’s fest season, OU students are not strangers to going out. Safety, however, is a less exciting side of Athens nightlife, yet it is ultimately the most critical concern when going out.

Lots of things run through students’ heads when they receive the initial text from a friend or group chat: “Want to go out tonight?” Many excitedly text their friends about what they will wear, who they will see, and whether tonight is the night to debut their brand-new goingout top. However, there are also thoughts that are harder to say out loud: How will I get home tonight? Will my friends walk me home if I want to leave early? What will I do if my safety is in jeopardy?

For many students, these concerns are a common part of nightlife. Bella Burscak, a fourth-year studying English literature, was no stranger to the safety concerns surrounding a night out.

“It’s just that series of small events that girls go through often. From leaving your friends and walking home by yourself at night, to guys not 112 | THREAD

leaving you alone at the bar,” Burscak said.

While a lack of safety in Athens’ nightlife scene may not be explicitly visible or apparent, that doesn’t mean that small incidents are rare or insignificant.

“I wouldn’t say that there was one specific thing that has ever happened to me here — like one big thing, I guess is what I’m saying — but that definitely doesn’t mean that there hasn’t been countless little things that have happened to me that have probably happened to most girls on this campus,” Burscak said.

Ensuring safety while still having a good time is something students at Ohio University are constantly balancing. Burscak said that tracking her friends’ locations is one of the best ways to ensure a safe night out, while still being spontaneous and adaptable.

“The amount of times where I have no idea where a friend of mine went, and I was worried.

Being able to check where their location is is extremely important,” Burscak said.

Planning ahead for uncertain or unsafe scenarios is common practice for many students on campus.

“I know, especially coming from a girl’s perspective, turning down a guy and telling them to get away from you sometimes is very uncomfortable, especially if they’re being pushy,” Burscak said. “So kind of just figuring out, like, what would be your plan if you’re in a situation like that. It’s not a fun thing to have to plan ahead for that stuff and think about what your solution is going to be, but it’s better to think about what you might do in that moment than have to be put on the spot.”

Walking home alone is also a constant source of fear and vulnerability for many.

“It’s not exactly a comfortable feeling. I’m

always turning around and checking my back, even if it’s just like another random girl behind me. I’m like, ‘Alright, who else is there?’,” Burscak said.

Walking home alone is not only uncomfortable, but it can also decrease the chances of being safe. Eileen Marsal Koch, director of the Survivor Advocacy Program at Ohio University, pointed out that while many situations cannot be avoided, the buddy system is a fantastic way to increase students’ safety.

“So, the buddy system, bobcats helping bobcats, you know, staying with the friends you went out with, if you can. Making sure if your friend looks like they’re not really doing so hot, like maybe they look like they might have had too much to drink, or they look like they’re not going to be able to get themselves home, taking care of each other,” Marsal Koch said.

Marsal Koch started at OU with Counseling and Psychological Services in 2020. In September 2024, she began working with the Survivor Advocacy Program. During Marsal Koch’s time with the program, it has aimed to unite OU’s community against unsafe situations with its initiatives.

“One of the things that OU has tried to work with all of our students on is to be a better bystander. Like, see something, say something,” Marsal Koch said.

The Survivor Advocacy Program also provides students with opportunities to discuss safety with other community members and advocates, attempting to create a space where students can feel safe discussing uncomfortable situations.

“This fall, we’ve already had Coffee with a Cop back in September with OUPD. They’re amazing partners of ours. We work with them all the time,” Marsal Koch said.

Outside of the Survivor Advocacy Program, the Athens Police Department is at the forefront of protecting student safety, especially in recent years. Nick Magruder, Athens police chief, said he prioritizes keeping students safe, especially those new to campus.

“That’s kind of [what] our whole purpose is.

We’ve always tried to make sure — especially in the Uptown area, nighttime, student areas, and any part of the city, really — we’re making sure we’re focusing on everyone’s safety, especially student safety. Because a lot of it comes down to just awareness and knowing the city and understanding your surroundings, especially

when you’re in a new area. Just getting to know that portion, things like that,” Magruder said.

Like others mentioned, Magruder emphasized the importance of students sticking together and the buddy system.

“We always call it the buddy system; if you think you’re going to be having that much fun, always have someone with you and make sure that you’re being looked out for and not being left out on your own,” Magruder said.

Magruder also advised students to be careful while drinking and to stay aware of their surroundings.

“I mean, you want to know kind of your boundaries and what your body can handle and what your body can’t handle, and I think that’s extremely important. And making sure that you know yourself and that you know your surroundings too, because that’s when a lot of people get in dangerous situations, and that’s when they explore other things and they’re not used to it,” Magruder said. “It really can affect them mentally, physically, and hurt them as well.”

Student safety, while not always the most thrilling part of party culture, is on the minds of many in the Athens community. While it is vital to keep these tips in mind before going out, being properly informed about handling an uncomfortable situation after the fact is just as necessary.

“Oftentimes, survivors are afraid to say something happened to them because they’re worried people are going to say to them, ‘Well, what were you wearing?’ ‘Why were you uptown?’ ‘Why didn’t you have anything to drink?’ None of that matters, right? They should be allowed to do whatever they want to do and not be worried about that,” Marsal Koch said.

The Survivor Advocacy Program has many resources for survivors and allies of survivors who wish to receive support.

While a night out can be fun, students should also be aware of the strategies they can use to stay safe, as well as resources available when things don’t go as planned. Whether it’s a traumatic situation or a series of small incidents, all experiences are valid and often frightening.

Make set plans, stick together, and know your limits with alcohol, but most of all, never be afraid to ask for help. Safety, while often difficult to bring up in group settings, is constantly on the minds of many, and there will always be someone there to help.

STILL A

PARTY SCHOOL?

I

n 2015, Playboy Magazine named Ohio University the No. 1 party school in the United States, further cementing its longstanding reputation for its spirited party culture. But that was a decade ago, and OU’s once untouchable status has since faltered.

In the last 10 years, OU has gradually declined in the rankings on Niche.com’s annual list of the Top 25 Party Schools in America. The rankings, which are determined by “student reviews and nightlife statistics,” placed OU at 17th for the 2026 list. Between the bars, house parties, and the notorious “fest season,” Athens has plenty of opportunities for partying. So why did OU drop so dramatically compared to previous years?

Alex Snyder, who grew up in Nelsonville, just 13 miles from Athens, experienced the university during its peak party school era. He earned his bachelor’s degree at OU in photojournalism in 2010, returning to complete his master’s in multimedia production and photo editing in 2012.

“Growing up, Athens always had a reputation,” Snyder said. “Everyone was like, ‘Oh, we can’t go to Athens this week to get groceries because of Palmer Fest.”

Although he wasn’t much of a partier himself, during his time at OU, Snyder photographed the party culture for a photo project titled “Party School.” In his collection, Snyder captured keg stands, the remnants of a couch fire, the police horses, and even a student actively getting arrested.

Around this time period, “fests” were gaining popularity, where certain streets composed primarily of student-rented houses would host

large parties for the duration of their assigned weekend.

This includes Mill Fest, Palmer Fest, Congo Fest, High Fest, Santa Fest, and the infamous HallOUweekend. Family events like Mom’s Weekend and Dad’s Weekend also bring a surge of excitement to campus.

“We had police coming in from states over to help keep crowds in check,” Snyder said. “I think we had 30-40,000 people on Mill Street.”

According to Snyder, Palmer Fest was considered the ultimate party in Athens, centered around the Palmer Place apartment complex at 25 Kurtz St., where students packed its courtyard to celebrate. The complex was always crowded, revelers standing shoulder to shoulder, and it was the highlight of the fest season.

Everything changed in 2024 when Cornwell Proerties, which owns Palmer Place, limited attendance because of potential liability issues, according to an article from The Post Athens.

This decision effectively canceled the festivities, but they were revived a year later by the surrounding houses on the street.

However, many think that Palmer Fest isn’t the same since that decision. Drew Morman, a current senior studying health service administration, discussed how some of the excitement surrounding parties faded, and fest season as a whole doesn’t have the same energy it once did.

“In my time, I’ve seen parties be taken away, changed, and even stopped,” Morman said. “It’s still going strong, but it’s definitely not as large as it has been in the past.”

Another major fest that draws in large numbers is the iconic HallOUween weekend. People travel from all over the country to experience Halloween in Athens. The celebration includes a massive block party with live music and activities that shut down Court Street, while house parties fill the surrounding neighborhoods.

According to OU’s website, students who live in residence halls must register guests for a $50 fee and keep their hall’s designated wristband on for the entirety of the weekend. As a result of these intense restrictions, OU Halloween isn’t as well attended as it once was.

“It’s just not the same,” Snyder said. “It’s not as robust, and it’s definitely more toned down. I think the pandemic changed the way that we interact in life … You have a whole new generation that is much younger, and social interaction is very different.”

Vince Debeljak, a senior studying music production and recording, shares Snyder’s sentiment, but still believes OU deserves

its status as a party school. Debeljak is a DJ for Bricklife Entertainment, a live event and party production company based in Athens. Debeljak often plays music at various Athens party hot spots, including bars, fests, and fraternity parties.

“I don’t think that the classification of OU being a party school has changed; I think the classification of the word ‘party’ has changed,” Debeljak said. “I blame natural human evolution of social interaction, obviously with COVID hindering people’s ability to go out.”

This isn’t just at OU, but it’s a trend in young adults everywhere.

According to a 2023 survey from Gallup, adults between the ages of 18 and 34 are drinking about 10% less now than they were two decades ago. An article from The Washington Post even dubbed Generation Z as “Generation Stay-At-Home.”

“It’s hard for people to want to come out and have fun and interact with people they don’t personally know,” Debeljak said. “My goal is to try and do as much as I can to entice people to come out.”

But perhaps the most significant reason partying is declining in Athens is the increased police presence at bars, parties, and fests.

Court Street alone offers 13 bars, all within walking distance of campus, including: The Red Brick Tavern, Pawpurrs Bar, The Pub Bar & Grill, The Pigskin Bar & Grille, The Over Hang, Stephen’s On Court, Broney’s Alumni Grill, The J Bar, The Crystal, The CI, Cat’s Eye Saloon, North End Kitchen & Bar, Lucky’s Sports Tavern, along with over a dozen more in neighboring streets and surrounding areas.

Morman, who also works as a manager and bartender at The Pigskin Bar and Grille, explained that the establishment tightened its security measures to ensure customers remain safe, responsible, and within the law.

“The most important thing is protecting our liquor license,” Morman said. “So ideally, we have two people on the door, someone in the back, and a couple of people around just making sure we don’t have any underaged [students] in here.

We’re denying any underage that we ID or that we see.”

This crackdown on fake IDs and underage drinking kept a large portion of students from going out to the bars. Since most students are not of legal drinking age, the only sure way to avoid getting in trouble is to stay in altogether.

It’s not just the students, though. OU as an institution is also trying to distance itself from its party school designation and emphasize the importance of academics.

“I know faculty and staff at OU don’t like the fact that we’re known as a party school and are trying to do things to change it,” Debeljak said. “ … The best thing you can do as a college is embrace the stereotype and at least show the world that what you’re offering is top tier.”

As enrollment continues to hit record-breaking numbers each year and new students experience the culture for themselves, the traditions that define OU life may continue to evolve alongside the students who call Athens home.

“As those enrollment numbers continue to increase, more people are going to become adapted to our culture and what we have going on in Athens, “ Debeljak said. “While some people may think we’re in a lull state right now, we are very much still raging and will continue to grow and party as the years go on.”

The Health Habit We Keep Ignoring

F

rom blue light glasses to digital alarms, technology is increasingly intertwined with nearly every part of our daily routine, including the moments meant for rest.

This constant connection, however, comes at a cost: our screens are quietly stealing the quality of our sleep. Despite spending nearly half of our lives resting, sleep continues to remain one of the most neglected pillars of health.

Getting enough good sleep does more than leave you feeling rested; it plays a critical role in nearly every system of the body.

According to the Sleep Foundation, sufficient sleep offers benefits including better concentration, emotional regulation, and even a stronger immune system. When sleep is sacrificed, those processes falter, leaving people feeling sluggish, moody, forgetful, and more susceptible to illness. In short, sleep isn’t optional; it’s fundamental to healthy living.

Many do not know that sleep is not a single, simple process, but is instead made up of several distinct stages, each serving vital functions that allow the body and mind to fully recover. The Sleep Foundation reports that the first stage, known as non-REM Stage 1, marks the initial transition into sleep; a light, brief phase between

wakefulness and rest. As you move into non-REM Stage 2, body temperature drops, muscles relax, and heart rate slows as the body prepares for deeper sleep. Stage 3, often called slow-wave or deep sleep, is the most restorative stage, responsible for tissue repair, muscle recovery, and immune support. Finally, REM sleep, characterized

by rapid eye movements and vivid dreams, plays a key role in memory consolidation, learning, and emotional regulation.

The body cycles through these stages multiple times throughout the night, each lasting about ninety minutes. When this natural rhythm is disrupted or shortened, whether it’s from stress, caffeine, or technology usage, the body misses crucial opportunities for repair and rejuvenation.

For Elizabeth Haudrich, a second-year Ohio University graduate student studying experimental psychology with a focus on stress and its implications for sleep, the quality of sleep outweighs the quantity.

“Sleep is not one of those things that you should be overlooking; it should be a priority,” Haudrich said.

Many may think that sleep only affects physical strength, but emotional stability and social interactions are also greatly impacted.

“Sleep is just so important to being a healthy individual,” Haudrich said. “It has implications on our well-being, our ability to function as a social

and intelligent being.”

Haudrich also highlighted the modern challenges to maintaining a consistent sleep routine, chief among them, screen time. In recent years, researchers from the National Sleep Foundation have shown that exposure to blue light that comes from phones, tablets, and computers suppresses melatonin, a hormone that tells the body it is time to go to sleep. Latenight scrolling delays sleep onset, shortens overall sleep duration, and diminishes sleep quality, particularly for adolescents and college students who often use screens before bed.

“We’re not vampires,” Haudrich said. “Sleep is a requirement for being able to function and do anything because it replenishes our cognitive resources.”

When we trade bedtime for screen time, we’re not just losing hours, we’re losing balance. By understanding the science of sleep and taking small steps to protect it, such as limiting screens before bed or establishing a consistent sleep schedule, we can safeguard one of the most powerful tools for physical and mental health.

Ancient mythologies and polytheistic religions try to make sense of their worlds by personifying their different attributes, finding meaning in the idea that maybe the sun watches over and protects them, or that if they give thanks to the fields, their harvests will deliver more fruit.

“We see this pattern of ascribing natural phenomena to religion,” said Yashvita Kanugati, a senior at Ohio University studying linguistics and religious studies. “It allows people to give themselves a familiar feel, or to put a name or face to those things that are kind of strange and … so much bigger than just yourself.”

One such attribute in these mythologies and religious traditions is the night. Nighttime deities personify the moon, the stars, the sky, or purely night itself.

In Greek mythology, the primordial goddess Nyx governs the night. She carried a dark mist over the sky, which brought the nighttime.

Further, there is Selene, the goddess and personification of the moon, Astraeus, the titan god of stars and planets, and Hypnos, the god of sleep and child of Nyx. In mythological traditions, Hypnos puts various gods or humans to deep slumbers. The myth of Selene and Endymion tells the story of how Selene fell in love with the beautiful mortal Endymion; however, she did not want to make

him immortal and thus enlisted the help of Hypnos to put Endymion to an eternal sleep, though keeping his eyes open. This way, she could visit him every night and gaze upon him while he looked at her.

The Greeks worshiped their gods through votive practices, meaning they offered gifts to their gods at a temple to remain in good favor with various deities. Devoted worshipers built temples to specific deities, erected statues to celebrate them, held feast days to offer sacrifices, and occasionally formed cults surrounding the icon, according to The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Followers of nighttime gods might hold rituals or festivals in the twilight to offer thanks and hopefully receive blessings in return. A statue of Nyx lives in the temple at Ephesus, and she is believed to have once spoken through an oracle at Megara, according to the Greek historian Pausanius.

Culturally, gods of the night continue to be significant. In Vedic tradition, an early form of religion that very closely influenced modern Hinduism, the goddess Ratri ruled the night.

Kanugati said that now, “Ratri” is the word for night in many Indian languages.

In Hinduism and Buddhism, some followers of the religions also perform tantric rituals during the night, according to Professor Brian Collins, who teaches classics and religious studies at OU. Tantra is “the sort of esoteric and sometimes transgressive forms of both Hinduism and Buddhism” that involves the “summoning of, usually female, spirits called dakinis or yoginis to help them perform rituals,” Collins said. These summoning rituals, typically performed by men, take place in cremation grounds, and the night is the only time “these supernatural beings that are vaguely ghostly or demonic can be summoned up.”

The purpose of these tantric rituals was to find a union between matter and spirit. In these religious traditions, matter was coded feminine and spirit was coded masculine; because “they tend to be male practitioners, they tend to summon female spirits to help perform their rituals,” Collins said.

Collins elaborated on a particularly interesting ritual that occurred in the Southwest of India, where every three years, during a festival to a goddess, an oracle chooses a group of men.

At nightfall, these men search for and follow bouncing fairy lights into the woods, but “at the

end of every night, somebody doesn’t come back,” he said. “They’re struck down by the goddess, and they either disappear or they just get knocked unconscious enough to be brought back.”

Once only one man remains, the people of the community will “take the bones of an ancestor and run with it to the cremation ground to perform a ritual there for the good of the village,” Collins said.

Gods and various personifications of the nighttime in mythology and religion give intangible and inexplicable realities a deeper symbolic meaning to their worshipers. They explain complex patterns of life, serve as mechanisms for ritualistic practices, and ultimately are a form of storytelling.

ATHENS SEEKS

PLATFORMS FOR CLUB CULTURE

F

rom Prohibition-era speakeasies to ‘70s discotheques and modern technotitans, club culture has a storied history that is deeply intertwined with other branches of pop culture. Clubbing owes itself to drag shows, international influence, EDM festivals, and countless other inspirations, all of which have a hand in Athens’ nightlife.

Jack Wilburn graduated from Ohio University in 2025. In addition to studying classics during his time at OU, Wilburn began his journey as drag queen Evelyn Everything while living in Athens.

“I started performing at OU, at The Union actually, and I was doing it very casually,” Wilburn said. “Then a little bit later, I landed a job at my home bar in Cincinnati, and I was traveling back and forth to perform on the weekends.”

Wilburn still works every weekend at that same bar, Bloom OTR. Wilburn is spending postgrad life focusing on drag, a medium he discovered at 13, and has come to appreciate for its role in nightlife.

“I think drag is a lot of people’s gateway into nightlife and the community of nightlife, and I think drag entertainers themselves serve as points of contact and ports of entry into the club,” Wilburn said. “... It’s kind of a drag queen’s responsibility to be the person that goes up to [people] and connects with them, introduces them to more people, has drinks with them, dances with them, and allows them to celebrate queer culture.”

Wilburn has spent countless hours enjoying club culture while performing as Evelyn Everything, but has also spent time in clubs out of drag.

“I think nightclubs are really unique spaces,” he said. “People with very different backgrounds and people who might not really be similar at all can share a dance and share a drink and develop a community where there otherwise wouldn’t be an opportunity to do that.”

Although Wilburn recognizes the absence of clubs in Athens, he believes there is still a resource for those looking for an adjacent experience.

“If you want to come close to clubbing in Athens, I think The Union is definitely the place to go, but for an authentic clubbing experience, you would have to branch out a little further,” Wilburn said.

For her clubbing experience, Sarah Goecke, a junior studying environmental science and sustainability, branched all the way out to Japan. During her summer studying abroad at Chubu University, she experienced the very club culture that Athens lacks.

“The Union is just one floor,” she said. “This club, I want to say, was five floors.”

Those floors included DJs playing everything from “Party in the USA” to K-pop hits, couches and changing areas exclusively for women, and hours of operation that catered to a nocturnal clubbing experience.

Goecke also witnessed firsthand the contrast between club and bar culture outside of the U.S. “The Japanese club was a lot less chaotic, and that was really nice because sometimes when I go out I’m really stressed because I’m like, ‘Oh my gosh, music is blasting, I can’t hear my friends, I don’t know what’s going on,’” she said.

The overlap of bar and club culture is something Vince Debeljak, a senior studying music production and recording industry, has become very familiar with in his position as the head of BrickLife Entertainment, Athens’ largest party promoter and provider.

“Athens is obviously without a club, and that is something that I wish could change,” Debeljak said. “There is a group of students out there who are looking for that club culture, nobody wants to go to the bar and hear the same Pitbull and Ke$ha songs they have on repeat, so as of the past couple of years … my goal with BrickLife has been trying to convert the typical bar scene into something that is more energetic and powerful.”

Some of Debeljak’s influences in this mission have been his experiences at raves and electronic music festivals.

“That influence from big electronic shows is what we try to do with our productions, so our team has laser lights and CO2 air gun smoke cannons, so we just try to add that powerful element to all of our shows,” he said.

Debeljak is also inspired by the emphasis on community within club culture, in which general kindness and the exchange of gifts are a major component.

“Me and a bunch of my boys went to a Crankdat show, and four of us came home with 3-D printed fidget cubes that were just given to us,” Debeljak said. “It’s that experience that really connects attendees and guests to that culture, as well as the music and enjoying that experience together.”

Reinventing Sleepwear:

Revaleutian Apparel Prioritizes Sustainability, Craftsmanship

rends rule the fashion industry, and with the rise of social media, what is considered stylish seems to change daily. Fast fashion capitalizes on these trends, saturating the market with poor-quality pieces that cause overconsumption and damage the environment. As an alternative, upcycling transforms old, forgotten, or discarded clothing into brand-new designs, reducing waste and giving the piece a new life.

For Aleutian Presley, upcycling ultimately became her life’s work. Growing up, Presley always loved fashion and creativity, but she never imagined it could become her career.

That changed after she moved from Texas to Hawaii at just 21 years old, and she discovered her passion for upcycling.

“I sold everything I had and I moved to Maui without ever being there before,” Presley said.

“I just felt really called to start over and find my way, just not in Texas.”

Presley already had a bit of a foundation in sewing thanks to her grandmothers, who both worked as seamstresses, but she honed her skills even further in Maui, where local women taught her more intricate techniques and patterns.

“When I came here, I moved in with a woman who was hand-making her clothes,” Presley said. “She was hand-dyeing them, and she really inspired me to try it. I would just watch her and be in awe, so I bought myself a sewing machine. I kind of just started looking up videos on YouTube, and I kind of intuitively learned as well.”

After settling into her new life, Presley got a job at Maui Mood Swing, a vintage shop in Wailuku, Maui. There, she organized monthly community events, including upcycling workshops and other teaching opportunities. Her first workshop focused on creating upcycled pillows, using leftover fabric and stuffing them with discarded textile scraps.

One standout project of hers is a reinterpretation of the mu’umu’u. A mu’umu’u — colloquially known as a muumuu — is a loose, Hawaiian-style dress that is often worn for lounging and comfort. Presley gave the garment a new life entirely, transforming it into a two-piece frilly set that gave it a fresh and modern feel.

“The muumuu is a staple we’ve had for years and years,” Presley said. “I personally don’t think it looks super flattering on my body type.

Maybe other people like it, but I wanted to give it a spin and try something new: a new way to wear the muumuu, but still honor the pattern and the little details it has.”

Presley has a knack for transforming sleepwear, and she even led a workshop teaching Maui residents how to craft kimono-

After receiving positive feedback from her workshops, Presley realized there was real demand for her designs. She began selling her clothing at pop-up events across Maui, where her pieces quickly sold out. This success led her to launch Revaleutian Apparel, her upcycled clothing company.

“I wanted to start a revolution inspiring people to make things themselves and be more sustainable,” Presley said. “You don’t need to go to a fabric store, you don’t need to buy new things. … All you need is a sewing machine.”

Through upcycling, you can repurpose highquality fabrics that aren’t mass-produced with exploitative labor or contribute to excessive waste. Fast fashion today is often made from materials like polyester and nylon that shed microplastics, deplete natural resources, and are produced through exploitative labor.

According to data from Uniform Market, fast fashion is responsible for 10% of the global annual carbon footprint and uses 141 billion cubic meters of water annually, contributing to 35% of microplastics that pollute the ocean.

“I also live on an island, and it’s not like you can just throw things away and you’ll never see them again. … It’s really important to be intentional about everything you’re making.”

Buying from creators like Presley is an easy way to alleviate the environmental impact of fast fashion, while supporting small artists who prioritize sustainability and quality. Her work allows people to think more deeply about where their clothing comes from and the life it had before it was discarded.

“I am obsessed with clothing and fashion, and I just love hearing the story behind why something was made,” Presley said. “I feel it’s my responsibility as a creator to be sustainable.”

he day is full of work and stress, but the night is filled with a spooky sense of adventure. Some may say that there are two types of people in the world: night owls and morning people. Each time of day offers a different set of benefits and adventures that the others lack. The night, however, has a star-lit charm that the morning or afternoon sun can’t compete with.

Our sleep schedules, according to BrainFacts.org, are not personal preferences, but intimate, biological prepositions.

According to Dr. Ana C. Kriger, a professor of clinical medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College, sleep patterns, or chronotypes, are related to genetic factors and inclinations to sleep at certain times of day. This suggests that while social schedules affect our sleep, being an early bird or a night owl has more to do with genetics and individual wiring.

Being an early bird and getting started with the day before the sunrise is an empowering challenge for mental strength.

it offers a mystique that makes everything feel more adventurous. The night is only lit by the glow of cars and buildings that glint in the moonlight. The freedom of night is often contrasted with long days at work. It’s the time of day that everyone looks forward to after work and school, when the rest of the day is truly yours. As people wait the entire day for an event, concert, or party, nighttime also creates excitement through anticipation. This is why, I would argue, that movies, concerts, and shows are all more enjoyable at night.

While our social schedules compel us to associate the day with work, the night can create another atmosphere for creativity.

The calm, tranquil air and the starlit sky create a more peaceful indoor atmosphere to work. Life seems to slow down during the night, and night owls enter a heightened state of calm and focus. While daytime has its benefits, being a night owl allows you to explore the rich, mysterious, and exciting world that the night provides.

I

f you asked me whether I was a morning person this time last year, I would have laughed in your face.

Sleeping in on a weekday sounded like an ideal morning, and even though I had many friends who considered themselves to be ‘morning people,’ I never understood the appeal. That is, until I got a job this year working as a pilates instructor, and the only time I could teach was the 6:30 a.m. slot.

Fueled by online clean-girl inspiration and 10 p.m. bedtimes, I decided that this would be the year I became a morning person.

Don’t get me wrong, when my alarm goes off at 5:15 a.m., I do not feel particularly fond of mornings. In fact, I would say that at that moment, I feel a sense of hatred toward them. But as I force myself to leave the comfort of my warm bed, my day begins far before the sun even thinks about rising, which is an empowering feeling. Even though the exhaustion lingers, teaching a class so early forces my mind and body to be awake and active. Being able to start my day with so many smiling faces, while all being active

together, is refreshing and allows me to feel connected to a community of strong women before anything else happens in my day.

Once the class is complete, I feel inspired knowing that I got to lead a class full of so many dedicated people, and my body feels refreshed after starting my day off with movement. Leaving class, the world is still quiet, yet I feel a loud sense of pride in myself for doing something that I know was difficult.

Waking up that early doesn’t get easier, but mentally you get stronger. I challenge anyone who feels even remotely inclined, or even maybe repulsed by the idea of waking up early, to challenge yourself and try it (and maybe even stop by my class). You never know how you may surprise yourself.
