The very last thing that the Lord Jesus said before he ascended back into heaven is, “Go and make disciples of all the nations.” If that was on the heart of our Lord, we believe it should be on our hearts here at Southeastern.

Thank you for expressing interest in Southeastern. I think it’s the greatest place in the world to receive training to serve the Lord wherever it is that he wants to send you and however it is that he is calling you.

Southeastern is known as a Great Commission seminary. We’re very fond of saying around here that every classroom is a Great Commission classroom.

Why the emphasis on the Great Commission? We believe last words are meant to be lasting words. The very last thing that the Lord Jesus said before he ascended back into heaven is, "Go and make disciples of all the nations." If that was on the heart of our Lord, we believe that should be on our hearts here at Southeastern. That’s why you’ll find that we’re passionate about preparing men and women to serve our Lord all around the world.

As you’re seeking the Lord’s direction in your own life and trying to discern if Southeastern is the right place for you to prepare for ministry, let me give you two verses in Romans that have encouraged me and I hope will encourage you as well.

Romans 12:1-2 says: “Therefore, brothers and sisters, in view of the mercies of God, I urge you to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God; this is your true worship.

Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.” Throughout many centuries, men and women living in the center of God’s will suffered greatly. Some suffered the loss of their own life. A few years ago, the president of the International Mission Board was on our campus. I remember him saying something that clarified all of this for me when he said, “Being in the center of God’s will is not always easy. Being in the center of God’s will is not always safe. But being in the center of God’s will is always best.”

My prayer for you is that you would be in the center of God’s “good, pleasing, and perfect will.” If that involves you coming to study here at our seminary, then know that’s what we want you to do. I promise you this: We will love you well, we will serve you well, and we will prepare you well for whatever God’s will is for your life.

Love God

Love the Truth

The first of the great commandments is that we love the Lord our God with our heart, soul, and mind (Matt. 22:37). We are committed to seeing Southeastern students grow in their love and knowledge of God, so they will worship, trust, hope, and delight in him more.

Our love for God and others, the Bible tells us, is based first on God’s love for us (1 John 4:19). We believe when we are captivated by the love of God (2 Cor. 5:14-15), we are compelled and directed to live lives for his glory and for the salvation of all peoples.

Jesus says, “I am the way, the truth, and the life, no one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6).

Because God is truth, we believe his inspired word is true. By God’s word, he makes himself known to us, sustains our faith in him, provides a light for our lives, and transforms us. We train students to understand and to trust the sufficient word of God. We cherish his enduring and unfailing word because it is the message of salvation for all those who believe (Rom. 1:16). We are committed to seeing Southeastern students love and know the truth, so they may faithfully teach and share it.

Our hope is that the classes you take at Southeastern will spur you on to love God deeply and pursue his mission passionately around the world.

Our leadership and faculty affirm the Abstract of Principles, The Baptist Faith & Message 2000, the Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy, and the Danvers Statement on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood.

You’ll gain a solid foundation for ministry preparation in any context.

Love the Church

Love the World

The Scriptures call us “to care for the Church of God, which he obtained with his own blood” (Acts 20:28). We love the Church because God loves the Church and identifies with the Church as his body (Eph. 1:23). The Church is central to God’s work in the world — a redeemed people called to be devoted disciples of Christ and ambassadors of the gospel. We equip students to serve the Church and fulfill its mission.

The Scriptures say, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16). We are committed to seeing Southeastern students love what God loves and to participate in his redeeming work in the world.

Southeastern is a Great Commission seminary. We are consumed with a global focus because we are called and commissioned by Jesus “to make disciples of all nations” (Matt. 28:19).

We train missionaries, pastors, church planters, and more from every tribe, tongue, and nation to GO so that the Church on earth can look like the Church in heaven.

It has been said that a call to ministry is a call to prepare. I agree with that statement, but I would add these words: “A call to ministry is a call to prepare and to keep on preparing.” The world is changing so rapidly and dramatically that all of us must continue studying and learning to do the work of ministry. In fact, I argue that we must at least consider earning an advanced degree if we have the opportunity, accessibility, and ability to do further studies. Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary is committed to offer that opportunity through our advanced degree programs.

If I were looking for a place to do my advanced degree today, here is why I would choose Southeastern. First, this institution is committed to the authority of the word of God and the urgency of the Great Commission. We are not interested in producing advanced degree grads who simply know more than others; we want our graduates to use their training effectively in reaching their neighbors and the nations for Christ. Second, our faculty is second to none. I am continually amazed by the top-notch scholars God has given us. They lead their respective academic fields, publish significant resources, and serve faithfully in their local churches.

Third, our programs give students the opportunity to study directly with a faculty mentor. Other institutions offer a similar arrangement, but Southeastern faculty excel at this task. They are committed to helping their students succeed academically, and they willingly help graduates network as they seek future employment. Fourth, Southeastern advanced degree graduates are serving all over the world as pastors, missionaries, professors, administrators, denominational leaders, and other roles.

Indeed, more and more folks are now seeking our graduates.

Fifth, you may in many cases earn these degrees without moving to Wake Forest; that is, you may study at a higher level while still serving in your current place of ministry. Finally, Southeastern emphasizes producing not only the best scholars, but also the most faithful followers of Christ.

Our task is not simply to produce graduates; it is to, in partnership with local churches, produce disciples of Christ. Indeed, we want you to: • love God with all your heart, soul, and mind • love the truth of God’s word so much that you faithfully teach and share it • love the Church that is central to God’s work in the world • love the world that God loves These are indeed great days to earn an advanced degree. As I write this letter, I am praying that everyone who reads these words would be open to the Lord’s leading regarding further education. Should the Lord lead you to Southeastern, we are committed to stewarding you and your future studies well.

What Can I Study?

Doctor of Philosophy The Doctor of Philosophy is a 60-hour terminal degree designed to prepare men and women for service in the ministries of teaching and academic research. The program is also designed to provide outstanding specialized training for pastors, missionaries, and ministers.

At Southeastern, the ultimate goal of the PhD program is to help the Church fulfill the Great Commission by equipping men and women to teach others as Jesus commanded. We pursue the best scholarship driven by the desire to glorify God and the confidence that God will empower the prayerful Christian to exceed his or her own personal limitations (Eph. 3:20; 1 Cor. 1:24-25; 2 Cor. 12:9-10).

Modified Residency Most of our specializations are offered in a modified residency format. These specializations allow students to remain in their current ministry assignment while engaging in PhD studies. Students who choose the modified residency format enter the program as a community of scholars and normally remain together through a series of seminars that meet twice annually. All seminar and degree requirements for the students in specializations with modified residency are identical to the standard resident program.

What Can I Study?

Doctor of Education The Doctor of Education program at Southeastern is a 60-hour terminal degree program that challenges students to achieve their best in a flexible yet rigorous program created to shape and prepare leaders in education and ministry. It focuses on both the theory and practice of education within church, school, and university settings.

Students will develop skills in teaching techniques, leadership methods for diverse settings, and research skills to examine problems in a complex world. Prepare to be sharpened for Great Commission work by studying with outstanding professors and students at Southeastern. In this degree, students will become better communicators, educators, critical thinkers, and problem solvers.

The Doctor of Education degree offers specializations in Christian education, Christian counseling, and discipleship and mentoring.

Modified Residency The EdD is a professional, terminal research degree with a commuter-friendly, modified residency format. On-campus time is limited to one week per quarter, with online coursework before and sometimes after class sessions.

Students move through the coursework as part of a cohort, which is usually a group of 10-12 students. The cohort format provides a community of scholars in which iron sharpens iron.

Doctor of Ministry The Doctor of Ministry program is a 31-hour professional degree program designed to equip ministry leaders to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ by fulfilling the Great Commission in their own ministry contexts.

Our program has the essential tools to equip leaders in various contexts to strengthen their ministries and further develop as leaders. The program is designed as a modified residency model to encourage and provide further education for ministry leaders all over the globe.

What Can I Study?

Master of Theology The Master of Theology program is for post-MDiv students who desire to either: (1) enhance their academic qualifications for doctoral studies or (2) extend their preparation for ministry in a local church, on the mission field, or in other positions of denominational service.

Due to the generosity of commissioning churches in the Southern Baptist Convention, Southeastern is able to provide a substantial amount of aid to students who are members of SBC-affiliated churches. This is equivalent to 50% of what a student would normally pay for tuition and fees and is one of Southeastern's most significant sources of financial aid.
