Last words are meant to be lasting words, words that stick and make an impact. So important are the final words of our Lord Jesus Christ that they are recorded in each of the gospels and the book of Acts. Of all the things that Jesus could have left his church with, he left her with what we know as the Great Commission. In Matthew 28:16-20 it is depicted: The eleven disciples traveled to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had directed them. When they saw him, they worshiped, but some doubted. Jesus came near and said to them, “All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.�

It is my prayer that we would be a seminary consumed by the Great Commission. As a result of that, I want us to be a school that focuses not just on good things. I want us to focus on the most important things, the things that were important to the Lord Jesus Christ.

In that context, we remind ourselves regularly around here of a simple but basic truth. The church can live without the seminary, but the seminary cannot live without the church.

However, when seminaries do their job well, they provide an invaluable service to the churches of the Lord Jesus Christ. That is our calling and our mandate.

More than half the world has not heard the gospel, and I do not want us to stand before our Lord ashamed when He comes again. I want us to be a faithful Great Commission seminary until that day, when by His grace and for His glory, we will be that school.

Southeastern Seminary is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the Association of Theological Schools.

Approximately 560 students study in our advanced programs. The student has options from our Ph.D. to Ed.D. to D.Min. to Th.M. Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary became a reality on May 19, 1950, by a vote of the Southern Baptist Convention meeting in Chicago, IL. To house the seminary, the convention purchased the campus of Wake Forest College in Wake Forest, NC, recognized then and now as one of the most beautiful in the southeastern United States.

DOCTOR of PHILOSOPHY The Doctor of Philosophy is a 60-hour advanced and terminal degree, designed to prepare men and women for service in the ministries of teaching and academic research. The program is also designed to provide outstanding specialized training for pastors, missionaries and ministers. At Southeastern, the ultimate goal of the Ph.D. program is to help the church fulfill the Great Commission by equipping men and women to teach others as Jesus commanded. We pursue the best scholarship driven by the desire to glorify God and the confidence that God will empower the prayerful Christian to exceed his or her own personal limitations (Eph 3:20; 1 Cor 1:24-25; 2 Cor 12:9-10).

AREAS OF STUDY

While the standard resident program remains the most favorable learning environment, several areas of study are offered in a modified residency format.

These areas of study allow students to remain in their current ministry assignment while engaging in Ph.D. studies. Students who choose the modified residency format enter the program as a community of scholars and normally remain together through a series of seminars that meet twice annually. All seminar and degree requirements for the students in concentrations with modified residency are identical to the standard resident program.

DOCTOR of EDUCATION The Doctor of Education program at Southeastern is a 60-hour, advanced and terminal degree program that challenges students to achieve their best in a flexible, yet rigorous program created to shape and prepare leaders in education and ministry.

It focuses on both the theory and practice of education within church, school and university settings. Students will develop skills in teaching techniques, leadership methods for diverse settings and research skills to examine problems in a complex world. Prepare to be sharpened for Great Commission work by studying with outstanding professors and students at Southeastern.

In this degree, students will become better communicators and educators, critical thinkers and problem solvers. The Doctor of Education degree offers tracks in Christian counseling and Christian education.

The Ed.D. is a terminal research degree with a commuter-friendly, modified residency format.

On-campus time is limited to one week per quarter, with online course work before and sometimes after class sessions. Students move through the coursework as part of a cohort, which is usually a group of 10-12 students. The cohort format provides a community of scholars in which iron sharpens iron.

DOCTOR of MINISTRY The Doctor of Ministry program is a 31-hour professional degree program designed to equip ministry leaders to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ by fulfilling the Great Commission in their own ministry contexts. Our program has the essential tools to equip leaders in various contexts to strengthen their ministries and further develop as leaders. The program is designed as a modified residency model to encourage and provide further education for ministry leaders all over the globe.

REQUIREMENTS Those striving for academic and teaching excellence who have a: • Master of Divinity or its equivalent from an accredited theological institution • 3.0 GPA in graduate work (persons with a lower GPA will be considered individually) • 3 years post-M.Div. vocational ministry experience (some exceptions based on age and experience) • Current ministry position

MASTER of THEOLOGY The Master of Theology program is for post-M.Div. students who desire to either: (1) enhance their academic qualifications for doctoral studies; or (2) extend their preparation for ministry in a local church, on the mission field or in other positions of denominational service.

REQUIREMENTS Those striving for academic and ministry excellence who have a: • Master of Divinity or its equivalent • Strong background in Greek and Hebrew (6 hours of coursework in each) • 3.0 GPA minimum

TH.M. AND TH.M. WITH THESIS TRACKS The Th.M. program offers regular and thesis options. Admission requirements and degree hours are the same for both options; however, the coursework differs. Students interested should consult with their potential major professor and/or the director of Th.M. program to determine which option best meets their academic goals.

CONFERENCES Southeastern is committed to providing experiences outside of the classroom that encourage lifelong learning and dedication to ministry excellence. Throughout the year, Southeastern hosts The GO Conference, 9Marks at Southeastern, and others, which attract people from across the Triangle and around the nation to our campus.

Southeastern students can attend these conferences for a reduced rate. Speakers have included evangelical leaders like Matt Carter, J.D. Greear, Russell Moore, David Platt and our own president Daniel Akin.

CHAPEL Chapel is held every Tuesday and Thursday at 10:30 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters. The singing and preaching serve to encourage students, faculty and staff as we worship Christ together.
