THE MAGIC ATTIC ARCHIVE

The Magic Attic is a large independent local history archive containing newspapers, photographs, maps, artefacts and family history for South Derbyshire and the surrounding areas. Set up in 1987 the Magic Attic was created by local historians who were interested in preserving the fascinating history and heritage of this important industrial area.

A registered charity run completely by volunteers, the Magic Attic is located in the Sharpe’s Pottery Museum buildings. Local residents, visitors, students, schools, family historians and village history groups are given every assistance and are equally welcome.

SHARPE’S POTTERY MUSEUM

Visit the unique Grade II listed building where you will discover stories of Sharpe’s family history, and the significant changes from 19th Century coal mining, clay extraction and associated industrial activity in South Derbyshire, to a 21st Century sustainable landscape led by the creation of the National Forest!

From toilets to teapots and tiles to Toby jugs; Sharpe’s Pottery Museum has them all. From the early 16th Century the rich clay deposits of South Derbyshire attracted many entrepreneurs. They included, amongst many others ‘farm boy to gentleman potter’ Thomas Sharpe, rich businessman T.G. Green and the creative partnership of Henry Tooth and William Ault at Bretby Art Pottery.

HAVE FUN AND RELAX IN SWADLINCOTE SWADLINCOTE WOODLANDS

Swadlincote Woodlands (15 minute walk from The Delph market square) provides a green lung close to the town centre for the people of Swadlincote. With 40,000 trees, interpretative boards and a variety of features, the 80 acre park has developed a great deal over the last ten years and now offers a play area, orienteering course, picnic tables and a climbing rock.

Spectacular views can be found overlooking the town. Walks abound on a network of footpaths that criss-cross, with two trails waiting to be explored. Keep an eye out for the many plants and animals that can be found in and around the ponds and meadows on site. In addition to the above, facilities include car parking and toilets.

EUREKA PARK

Eureka Park (10 minute walk from The Delph market square) is a traditional open park developed from a simple recreation ground during the 1920s and early 1930s. Named after a coal seam which runs beneath the park, it provides a green oasis close to the centre of Swadlincote and is used daily by many people, from dog walkers to school children, from sports clubs to walking groups. The Park was restored in 2014 with support from the Heritage Lottery Fund to reinstate historic features and original planting. Facilities include toilets, changing room, playground, crazy golf, natural water play, picnic and performance areas.

LEISURE ACTIVITIES SWADLINCOTE SNOWSPORTS CENTRE

A large leisure facility and dry ski slope providing skiing, snowboarding, toboggan and sno-tubing with a fully licensed bar and restaurant.

Swadlincote Family Golf Centre has a friendly environment open to everyone from regular golfers to complete first-timers. The floodlit driving range offers the perfect practice facility with covered and outdoor bays. The golf course offers the perfect learning and short game facility with a mixture of holes and challenges.

FootGolf is available and played using a size 5 football. The object of the game is to get the ball into the hole using only your feet in the fewest number of shots possible.
