cremation, a memorial service, or a celebration of life, documenting those preferences in advance helps ensure their wishes are honored. It also gives families confidence that they're carrying out those wishes during an emotional time.

Finding Peace of Mind Through Planning By Sherre Cook, Prearrangement Advisor, Anubis Cremations

Talking about end-of-life planning isn’t something most people look forward to, but after more than 13 years helping families navigate these decisions, I’ve learned that planning ahead is one of the greatest gifts we can leave our loved ones.

W

hen someone passes away without a plan, family members are often faced with making important decisions while grieving. Preplanning removes much of that uncertainty by documenting personal wishes in advance, allowing families to focus on supporting one another instead of wondering what their loved one would have wanted.

At Anubis Cremations, families can choose between both methods, allowing them to select the option that best aligns with their personal beliefs, environmental values, and final wishes. As awareness of sustainability continues to grow, many people appreciate having meaningful choices that reflect both compassion and environmental stewardship.

Understanding Today's Cremation Options

Preplanning also provides an opportunity to personalize arrangements. Whether someone prefers a simple

Many people don't realize how much the funeral profession has evolved. Cremation has become an increasingly popular choice, and families today have more options than ever before to personalize arrangements while reflecting their values. In addition to low-emission traditional cremation, newer technologies have introduced water-based cremation, also known as alkaline hydrolysis. This process uses water, gentle heat, and naturally occurring alkaline compounds to accelerate the natural process of returning the body to its elemental form. It produces significantly fewer emissions than flame-based cremation, making it an appealing choice for individuals seeking a more environmentally conscious option. 6

Planning Is a Gift to Those You Love Another advantage of preplanning is financial preparedness. Making arrangements ahead of time allows families to better understand costs, explore available options, and reduce the financial stress that often accompanies an unexpected loss. One misconception I hear frequently is that preplanning is only for older adults. In reality, it's an important part of responsible life planning at any age—much like creating a will or advance healthcare directive. None of us knows what the future holds, but we can make thoughtful decisions today that will ease the burden on those we love tomorrow. The most rewarding part of my work is helping people realize these conversations don't have to be uncomfortable. They can be empowering. Planning ahead provides peace of mind, knowing your wishes will be honored and your family won't have to make difficult decisions alone. While no plan can lessen the grief of losing someone we love, thoughtful preparation can make one of life's most challenging moments a little easier, giving families the freedom to focus on what matters most: remembering, healing, and celebrating a life well lived. Sherre Cook is a Prearrangement Advisor with Anubis Cremations and has more than 13 years of experience helping families navigate end-of-life planning with compassion, education, and personalized guidance.

What Happened This Summer? They thought they had it handled. By Jay Minor

Their mother had been diagnosed with early stage Alzheimer’s, but the family felt like she was doing reasonably well. A caregiver came by a few hours each week, and from a distance everything seemed stable.

M

om was in her own home. She had some support. Life was manageable.

Then summer came, and the family spent real time with her. Not a quick Sunday visit or a phone call, but actual extended time together. Walks around the neighborhood. Dinners out at her favorite restaurant. Afternoons at home just being present. And what they saw during those unhurried hours changed everything. The confusion was more frequent and more significant than the family had realized. Simple conversations were harder. Familiar routines that she had always managed on her own were slipping. It became clear that she was not safe living alone anymore. Within a week we found a wonderful board and care home where she could receive the consistent care and oversight she needed. The family reports that her confusion has continued to progress and they are deeply grateful they acted when they did. That story reflects one of the most common patterns I see in my work with families. Cognitive decline has a quiet way of progressing in the background. When a parent is seen only occasionally, it is easy to miss how much has changed. The caregiver hours feel like enough. The last visit seemed fine. The assumption holds until extended time together reveals a different reality. 8

Summer has a unique way of closing that gap. Longer visits and relaxed afternoons create the kind of unhurried observation that a short visit simply cannot provide. Sometimes what families see is reassuring. And sometimes it is a turning point. If you spent time with an aging parent this summer and came home with a quiet concern you have not known what to do with, do not set it aside. What you observed matters.

level of support makes sense, and what care setting might be the right fit. There is no cost for that conversation. Do not wait for a crisis to act on what you already know. Call me at 949444-9055 or visit assistedlivinglocators.com/soc. What you noticed this summer deserves more than a worried thought on the drive home.

It can be tempting to explain away what you noticed or wait to see if things improve. But cognitive decline rarely reverses, and the window for making thoughtful decisions is always better before a crisis than after one. Here are a few things worth reflecting on from your summer visit. Did your parent repeat the same stories or questions within a short period of time? Did they seem confused about dates, times, or familiar places? Did they appear more withdrawn than usual? Was their home less organized than you would have expected? These are not definitive diagnoses but they are signals worth taking seriously. If any of those feel familiar, the most important thing you can do right now is have a conversation with someone who can help you understand your options. I work with families across South Orange County to help them assess where their loved one is, what

O

n a sunny afternoon in the River Street Marketplace in San Juan Capistrano, just a few steps from the historic charm and walkable streets that make the town so beloved, there’s a shop that feels less like retail and more like stepping into a living time capsule. Inside Old 44 Vintage, racks of worn-in denim, weathered leather jackets, turquoise jewelry, and nostalgic memorabilia invite visitors to slow down, explore, and reconnect with pieces of American history. Opened in 2022 by owners Sam Wingenbach and Jake Cover, Old 44 Vintage is built on a simple yet powerful idea: that objects from the past still have stories to tell – and new lives to live.

WHERE THE PAST MEETS PERSONAL STYLE

From the moment you walk through the door, the shop’s atmosphere feels intentional. Vintage concert tees hang alongside American workwear. Glass cases display turquoise rings and his10

toric memorabilia. A well-loved leather jacket from the 1970s might share space with an ‘80s band shirt or a carefully preserved advertising sign. For Sam and Jake, curating the shop is about much more than simply selling vintage items. “What sets our shop apart is our focus on authenticity and storytelling,” says Sam. “We’re not just selling vintage items – we’re preserving pieces of history and giving them a second life.” That philosophy is reflected in every corner of the store. Each piece has been hand-selected for its craftsmanship, character, and cultural significance – whether it’s a perfectly faded pair of Levi’s, a Western belt buckle, or a rare concert tee that captures a moment in music history. “Our goal is to bring pieces of the past into the present in a way that

feels exciting and wearable,” says Jake.

A PASSION BORN FROM EXPERIENCE

Interestingly, the path to opening Old 44 Vintage wasn’t paved through fashion school or traditional retail. Instead, the Sam and Jake trace their appreciation for vintage style back to a much more personal origin story. Growing up in the 1990s, much of their shopping happened at thrift stores. At the time, it wasn’t about trends or nostalgia – it was simply what was available. “There was never any taboo about wearing something that once belonged to someone else,” says Sam. Over time, that early exposure turned into something deeper: an appreciation for craftsmanship, individuality, and the stories behind historic objects.

Years spent wandering antique malls, digging through estate sales, exploring private collections, and even the occasional hoarder house sharpened their instincts for spotting meaningful pieces. What began as casual collecting eventually evolved into a full-fledged passion for sourcing items that reflect different moments in American culture. Opening Old 44 Vintage allowed them to turn that passion into a destination where others could experience the thrill of discovery.

THE ART OF THE HUNT

Behind the scenes, the buying side of the business is every bit as fascinating as the curated displays customers see in the shop. Sam and Jake are constantly on the lookout for clothing from the 1990s and earlier, with particular interest in vintage graphic T-shirts – especially concert tees – along with classic denim and American workwear brands like Carhartt. But the hunt doesn’t stop at clothing.

is one-of-a-kind, the inventory is constantly changing. A rack that held rare Western shirts last week may feature vintage military jackets the next. A glass case that once displayed turquoise jewelry might soon showcase collectible trading

“We also buy turquoise jewelry, old guitars, sports cards, Pokémon cards, advertising signs, art, and other historical items that have a unique story behind them,” they say. What matters most isn’t simply age – it’s character. They’re drawn to items that show craftsmanship, individuality, and the kind of wear that only comes from real life. The small imperfections, the fading, the patina of time – these details give each piece personality and authenticity that modern manufacturing simply can’t replicate.

A STORE BUILT ON DISCOVERY

One of the joys of visiting Old 44 Vintage is that no two visits feel the same. Because nearly everything in the shop

cards or a rare piece of Americana. That sense of discovery is exactly what keeps customers coming back. “In an era of mass production, there is something special about owning something that no one else has,” says Sam. For many visitors, the experience is both nostalgic and personal. Some arrive searching for a statement fashion piece – a vintage leather jacket or perfectly worn band tee. Others are drawn to the memorabilia that reminds them of earlier decades, from historic signage to collectible cards

and instruments. Designers, collectors, stylists, and casual shoppers alike find something to spark their curiosity.

KEEPING HISTORY ALIVE

Perhaps what makes Old 44 Vintage so compelling is the sense that the store itself is part of a larger story – one about preserving culture, celebrating individuality, and finding beauty in objects that have already lived a life. “We want people to feel like they’ve stepped into a place where the past is alive – where they can explore, reminisce, and find pieces that connect with their personal style or memories,” says Jake. In a world dominated by fast fashion and mass production, that philosophy feels refreshingly grounded.

At Old 44 Vintage, every jacket, guitar, ring, or sign carries a piece of American history. And thanks to Sam and Jake’s passion for the hunt – and their appreciation for the stories behind each find – those pieces are ready to begin their next chapter with someone new. For shoppers, collectors, and anyone who appreciates a little nostalgia with their style, that’s exactly the magic.

In the Same Light

How One Resident Chose The Covington Some choices announce themselves quietly. When Joan Trivett first stepped into her apartment at The Covington, the thing that stopped her wasn’t the brand-new countertops or fresh finishes. It was the light. Her house in Laguna Beach had faced the ocean. Though this apartment looked out on a hillside, it was oriented in almost the same direction. The afternoon light fell at the familiar angles. Even the living room, kitchen, and bedroom followed a layout that mirrored those she was leaving. “It just looked like this is where I needed to be,” she recalls.

A DECISION SHE REFUSED TO RUSH Joan’s certainty didn’t happen overnight. She had spent nearly three years quietly exploring senior living communities, always with one eye on a future she wasn’t ready to meet. Even after the passing of her husband, she was determined to stay in 12

Laguna Beach, holding onto her independence and the roots she’d put down over the past 30 years. Joan loved her neighbors. She loved walking down to the beach and along the cliffs. She loved opening her door to the ocean breeze. Trading it all for an apartment, at least initially, felt more like a loss than a choice. “I had never lived in [one],” Joan says. “I didn’t think I wanted to.” So, more than once, Joan turned down apartments when they became available. She wasn’t ready, and she knew it. Looking back, she’s honest about why. Like many of us, Joan quietly assumed she’d have more time to live independently.

First, Joan’s doctor informed her that her glaucoma had progressed enough that she shouldn’t drive. Then, her audiologist gave her the news that her hearing had deteriorated significantly. At 83, the future she was holding at arm’s length was suddenly right there in the room with her. She tried to manage, staying at home when she could and relying on ride services when she couldn’t, but Joan knew it wasn’t sustainable. “I had to let go of the idea that I could stay independent,” Joan says. The question was no longer when she might move. It was where.

WHAT NO BROCHURE COULD SHOW

“I had the illusion,” she says, “that I would sail through more years of aging without needing as much help.”

Thankfully, by the time Joan was ready to move, “where” had all but decided itself.

CHANGE COMES AT YOU FAST

At The Covington, she participated in a resident roundtable where prospective residents could move from table to table, asking current residents candid questions about their lives.

Her life changed in the span of one week.

One of those residents was a woman Joan knew and respected from her church in Laguna Beach. Another couple she knew had supported her late husband’s work with people experiencing homelessness. Their presence mattered. Because Joan shared many of their same values, she trusted their judgment. And they had chosen The Covington. She also looked closely at the mission behind the lifestyle. The Covington’s nonprofit status was important to Joan because it suggested that their goals extended beyond financial return. “The focus is on the community, the people, and the quality of life that we have here,” she says.

coordinated a mover who visited her house, measured her furniture, and mapped out in advance exactly what would fit and where. She arrived confident everything would work, and it did.

Location, too, was crucial. Because The Covington is only about 20 minutes from her former home, Joan was able to remain close to the people and places she knew. The coastal climate felt familiar, and the setting offered something other communities she toured could not. There were gardens, shaded places to sit, and a walking path winding through the grounds. Tucked behind a gate was a “secret garden” filled with flowers, bamboo and a koi pond. As a spiritual director drawn to a contemplative way of life, Joan recognized that this was a place where she could find peace. When it came to the apartment itself, however, Joan hesitated. Still unsure she wanted apartment living at all, she first gravitated toward a cottage, hoping to hold onto the feeling of a house. Instead of comfort, the empty rooms overwhelmed her. “I realized, no, it’s too big,” she recalls. “I’d feel lonely there.” Then she entered the apartment she lives in today. Light poured across the floors, softening clean, modern lines

Not long after settling in, Joan’s knee — troublesome for years — gave out in the middle of the night. Around four in the morning, in pain and unable to walk, she did something she had never done in her life. She reached over and called for assistance. Help arrived within minutes.

into something that felt less like a unit and more like somewhere she could belong. As it turns out, her furniture agreed. After her husband passed away, Joan had refreshed her home and bought new pieces. Walking through the unfinished apartment, she could see exactly where each piece would go. “People come in and think [the furniture] was chosen for here,” she says. “But actually, I had already chosen it, and it fit perfectly.”

“That was exactly what I think I wanted, but I had never really envisioned how it would work,” she says. “It was like being rescued. It was priceless.” Later, Joan needed knee surgery. The path to recovery took her from the hospital straight to The Covington Care Suites, then back to her own apartment. Physical therapists even came to her door and walked her to her sessions. When Joan says, “I’m a big success story for The Covington,” she means it.

THE SUPPORT SHE DIDN’T KNOW SHE NEEDED

OFTEN, YOU GAIN MORE THAN YOU LOSE

If leaving her home was hard, arriving was anything but. The Covington had

Joan had worried, understandably, about what she’d give up. She trea13

sured the outdoors, the daily walks, the open access to beautiful places. Choosing The Covington meant not having to miss any of that. The campus sits quietly on a hill in a residential area, free from traffic noise and beautifully landscaped, with a walking path she loops for exercise. In her first weeks, she watched grounds crews set thousands of new flowers into the beds. And there was something she hadn’t known to look for at all. Out in the world, she’d begun to feel a particular kind of loneliness. It’s the kind that creeps up when you’re surrounded by people who are too absorbed in their phones to know you’re there. In her new community, Joan found the opposite. Joan’s favorite art piece, a beehive “You cannot go out sculpture made by a friend into the hall and be passed by someone who doesn’t say hello,” she says. “Everybody looks you in the eye. Everybody takes time.” She pauses. “I call it a little bit of heaven.”

THE BIGGEST SURPRISE OF ALL On her journey from Laguna Beach to Aliso Viejo, that’s the one thing that sticks out most to Joan. Not the amenities, level of care or even the light in her apartment. It’s the closeness. “I didn’t expect that I would really feel close to people here,” she says. When she moved into the Care Suites after a few months at The Covington, she assumed she’d lose touch with all the new friends she’d made. After all, she’d just had knee surgery and couldn’t walk or visit them next door. Instead, neighbors kept track of her, 14

welcomed her back, and asked how she was. Nearly everyone she’s spoken with tells her the same thing: it gets even better over the years. Joan hadn’t set out to be won over. All she wanted was to make the right decision for her future, in her time and on her terms. But somewhere between the light in her windows and the neighbors in the hall, her choice of senior living community became something more.

AFTER DARK: DARK: AFTER THE ART OF OUTDOOR LIVING WITH CENTURION LIGHTING By Jody Robinson

A

s the sun sets over Orange County, a beautifully illuminated home takes on an entirely new personality. Pathways glow with warmth, architectural details emerge from the shadows, and gardens become dramatic outdoor retreats. Great landscape lighting isn't simply about visibility—it's about creating an experience. For more than three decades, Centurion Lighting has been helping Southern California homeowners bring that vision to life. Based locally, the company manufactures premium architectural lighting that is proudly made in the USA, with fixtures cast in solid brass and copper and engineered to withstand the elements while deliver-

ing timeless beauty. Its products are especially well suited for coastal communities, where quality craftsmanship and durable materials make all the difference.

A LEGACY OF QUALITY AND CRAFTSMANSHIP Centurion's story is woven into the growth of Orange County itself. From the early days of Ladera Ranch to luxury homes throughout Newport Coast and Laguna Beach, the company has partnered on countless residential and commercial projects. Its custom lighting can also be found at iconic destinations including Montage, Pendry and Disneyland, show-

casing the versatility and craftsmanship behind every fixture. "Our philosophy has always been simple—listen to the customer first," says Sales Representative Adam Jastrow. "We started in the pool and landscape industry in the mid-'90s, and by understanding what homeowners and contractors needed, we developed products that combine exceptional durability with beautiful design." That commitment extends well beyond manufacturing. Centurion's lighting designers work closely with architects, landscape professionals and homeowners to create customized lighting plans that enhance each property's unique character. One of the company's most valuable services is its nighttime demonstration, allowing clients to experience different lighting techniques before installation. "Seeing your home professionally lit at night before making a final decision is a game changer," Jastrow

says. "Together, we fine-tune every fixture, every beam angle and every focal point until the design feels just right."

DESIGNED TO LAST FOR GENERATIONS The results are both beautiful and practical. Professionally designed

Quality remains at the heart of every Centurion product. Each fixture is engineered to stand up to years of sun, salt air and the elements without sacrificing performance or appearance. Because the company has such confidence in its American-made craftsmanship, every fixture is backed by a lifetime guarantee, along with a 10-year warranty on its Forever Bright LED lamp source—a reflection of more than 30 years of manufacturing excellence. "When homeowners invest in outdoor lighting, they're investing in how they experience their home every evening," says Jastrow. "Our goal is to create something they'll enjoy for decades."

Adam Jastrow, Sales Representative

Because as the sun sets, the right lighting doesn't just illuminate a home. It creates an atmosphere, showcases exceptional architecture and transforms an ordinary evening into something extraordinary.

Don’t Risk Hiring Unlicensed Tradesmen! • Hire a Licensed Contractor with Workers Compensation Insurance!! • Ask to see the Contractors License Card and Worker’s Comp Certificate! If they can’t produce these items, send them on their way. By Joe Ronstadt, Sr. Hiring a legitimate licensed contractor gives you protection against the following:

INJURIES • Power Saws: Using Power saws while standing on step ladders and precariously balancing on beams is extremely dangerous! • Lifting Heavy Beams: Everyone knows lifting too much is hazardous. Most people do not realize how heavy these beams are. Back injuries are common. • Ladders and power tools: The risk of falling is real but adding in the use of large saws and drills, etc. only compound’s the danger.

NO RECOURSE if they are not licensed. What is your recourse if things don’t go as expected, like injury or poor workmanship? Who do you call? • No Contractor’s State License Board can help you. • No contractor’s Bond can help you. • What if they don’t finish the job and won’t return your calls? • Just because a friend or neighbor recommended an unlicensed individual posing as a contractor doesn’t mean that you’ll have the same experience.

COST • Many times, unlicensed individuals are more expensive or equal to the legal licensed contractors. If you don’t compare, you don’t know. For more info on our safety techniques and much more, see our website patiocoversoc.com. 18

HOW TO HIRE A LICENSED CONTRACTOR The starting point is checking all the normal credentials like CSLB license, insurance and references. But equally important is determining whether they are a good craftsman or not. If they are merely following industry standards of which have many flaws, they are falling short.

Some of the red flags that I see in advertising are as follows: • No License or Workers Compensation insurance. • Advertising for a trade that they are not properly licensed for. See (cslb. ca.gov). • False reviews. • False or exaggerated claims, i.e. years in business. • Using terms like: “combined years of experience.” The aggregate years of experience, of multiple individuals is irrelevant (example: when they say “Together, Smith & Jones have a combined experience of 50 years”). • The most important credential is not how many years, but the quality of craftsmanship. If a contractor uses poor techniques, the quantity of years is irrelevant.

TIP 2: Make sure they have workers compensation insurance!!! • Injuries are common in the construction industry. • Dangerous tools such as large saws are in use. • The use of ladders and heavy lifting is required. • With so many injury lawyers advertising on bill boards and such, injury fraud is a legitimate concern. A worker can fake an injury and an injury Attorney will sue the contractor and also the property owner.

TIP 3: The Lower the License Number, The Longer in Business. • Our License, established in 1984, Check Our License #452151 at (cslb. ca.gov)

Joe Ronstadt, Sr.

TIP 1: Don’t hire a drifter with no address! Look for the following: Make sure that you have enough information in case you need to sue. • Contractor’s license, address, legitimate company name, reviews, etc...

California Gun Services Helping families navigate the responsibility of firearms left behind

By Jody Robinson

For many seniors, widows, and adult children, the passing of a loved one brings an unexpected discovery layered into an already emotional time: firearms tucked away in closets, safes, nightstands, or garages—often accompanied by more questions than answers.

W

hat do you do with them? Are they legal to keep? Can they be sold, moved, or simply given away? For Jeff McCabe, owner of California Gun Services, these are not abstract questions—they are daily phone calls. “Most people don’t realize how complex California gun laws are until they’re suddenly responsible for a firearm they didn’t expect to have,” he says. “Many times, the firearm belonged to a late husband or father. The family doesn’t want it, but they also don’t know what to do with it.” Those moments reveal a gap between legal complexity and everyday understanding— especially for seniors who may no longer feel comfortable handling firearms, or heirs who want to do the right thing but don’t know where to begin.

WHERE LAW MEETS SENSITIVITY California’s firearm regulations 20

are not only detailed—they are constantly evolving. Even well-meaning actions, like transporting a firearm or attempting to “turn it in,” can inadvertently create legal issues. Beyond the law, there is also the human side: grief, memory, and sometimes hesitation about removing something that once belonged (or currently belongs) to a loved one like a recent case where McCabe assisted a family managing a father in the early stages of dementia. The firearms were legally owned, but the family needed a solution that prioritized safety without causing distress. “These situations require patience and respect,” he says. “It’s not just about removal—it’s about understanding what the family is going through.”

A TRUSTED GUIDE THROUGH A COMPLICATED PROCESS McCabe and his team offer in-home services designed to simplify what can otherwise feel overwhelming. Through California Gun Services, clients receive:

In cases of inheritance, McCabe often works alongside estate attorneys and family members to ensure everything is handled properly and respectfully. San Clemente resident Rhonda Murphy remembers the relief she felt after calling McCabe following her husband’s passing. “I didn’t want to keep the guns, and I wasn’t sure what was legal,” she says. “Jeff came to the house, handled everything professionally, and took the worry off my shoulders. It was one less thing to deal with during a very hard time.”

A SERVICE BUILT ON RESPONSIBILITY For McCabe, the mission is simple: reduce risk, ensure compliance, and bring peace of mind to families navigating a difficult transition. “Firearms can last longer than a lifetime,” he says. “Knowing what you have—and what to do with it—is essential.”

ONE STOP. ONE TEAM. TWO TRUSTED NAMES. Maaco Manager Patrick

COMPLETE AUTO CARE UNDER ONE ROOF By Jody Robinson

M

ost of us don’t spend much time thinking about auto repair – until we need it. Whether it’s a collision, a strange noise under the hood, or routine maintenance, finding someone you trust can make an already stressful situation a little easier. For Peter Capdevielle, building that trust has been the heart of his work for more than 30 years. “When you love what you do, it shows,” Peter says. “I’ve always loved cars, but what has kept me in this business is helping people. We treat every customer with honesty, respect, and professionalism.” For the past two decades, Peter has owned and operated the Maaco Auto Body & Paint Center in Lake Forest, providing expert collision repairs and complete paint jobs at affordable prices for all makes and models, including motor homes. Last year, he expanded the business by bringing Meineke Car Care to the same location, creating a full-service automotive center where customers can have both collision repairs and mechanical work completed under one roof. “It just makes life easier for people,” he says. “Whether it’s body work after an accident or routine maintenance, 24

our customers don’t have to visit multiple shops.”

KNOWING YOU HAVE A CHOICE One of the biggest surprises Peter shares with new customers has nothing to do with repairing cars. “After an accident, many people assume they have to take their vehicle to the body shop their insurance company recommends,” he says. “What most people don’t realize is they have the legal right to choose any repair shop they want.” That choice can make a significant difference.

ty, many of whom have relied on Peter and his team for years.

NATIONAL BRANDS. LOCAL COMMITMENT. While Maaco and Meineke are nationally recognized brands with decades of experience, Peter believes it’s local ownership that truly sets his business apart. “We’re part of this community,” he says. “Our reputation matters because these are our neighbors.” Every repair is backed by a nationwide warranty, giving customers added confidence wherever they travel. More importantly, Peter says, his experienced team understands that every vehicle represents someone’s daily life, and getting it repaired correctlyr – and as quickly as possibler – matters.

Many insurance-recommended shops operate under agreements with insurance carriers. Peter’s shop doesn’t.

After more than three decades in the automotive industry, Peter says the most rewarding part of the job hasn’t changed.

“Our responsibility is to our customer – not the insurance company,” he explains. “Our job is to repair the vehicle properly and safely while helping our customers navigate the claims process. We advocate for them be-

“It’s seeing customers come back year after year and knowing they trust us enough to recommend us to their family and friends,” he says. “That’s something we never take for granted.”

FROM FORGOTTEN TO FOUND:

How The Deal Chest Unlocks the Hidden Value of Everyday Treasures By Jody Robinson

T

here’s a quiet thrill in discovery—the moment when an ordinary-looking object reveals an extraordinary story. For James Fox, owner of The Deal Chest, that moment has shaped a career spent uncovering hidden value and connecting overlooked treasures with collectors who truly appreciate them. The Deal Chest isn’t a trend-driven resale operation. It’s a deeply informed consignment business grounded in market knowledge, patience, and trust. Fox began selling on eBay in 1998, shortly after the platform launched, helping friends and family sell items they didn’t realize had value. What started as a side hustle gradually became a full-time calling. From 2011 through 2020, Fox worked as a full-time eBay consultant and consignment seller, completing more than 60,000 transactions and generating over $3.5 million in revenue for clients.

Knowing Where Something Belongs While eBay remains a powerful global marketplace, Fox is quick to point

out that it’s not always the best fit. “The goal is always to choose the selling method that maximizes value and convenience for the client,” he explains. Depending on the item, that might mean a specialty auction, a private collector, or a targeted marketplace. Knowing where something should be sold is often just as important as knowing what it’s worth.

A Lifelong Immersion in Collectibles Fox’s fascination with collectibles began in the late 1970s at sports card trade shows, long before the hobby went mainstream. He later earned a degree in Business Management from California State University, Fullerton, laying the groundwork for a sustainable business. From 1987 to 1996, he operated booths at trade shows buying and selling sports cards and memorabilia, sharpening both his instincts and his eye. Over the decades, Fox’s expertise has expanded across a wide range of

categories: sports memorabilia, rare coins, toys, vintage costume jewelry, clothing and accessories, vinyl records, watches, collectible books and magazines, vintage glassware, automotive collectibles, and more. Hundreds of estate auctions and years of tracking market trends have shaped his measured, informed approach. Another defining chapter came during Fox’s 20 years as a sales representative in the moving industry. Time and again, he watched homeowners discard or donate items worth significant money. The experience reinforced the value and importance of taking a second look before letting things go.

Making the Process Simple What truly sets The Deal Chest apart is Fox’s ability to demystify selling. Many people don’t know what items are valuable, and that’s perfectly normal. Fox makes the process transparent and approachable, often surprising clients with what their “clutter” is really worth. He’s sold everything from everyday nostalgia to rare, oneof-a-kind pieces, giving each item the same level of research, care and presentation. In a world where selling online is often oversimplified, Fox offers a timely reminder: maximizing value takes experience. And sometimes, it all starts with a quick call or text—before yesterday’s clutter becomes tomorrow’s missed opportunity.

Make Sure You’re Not Giving Away a Small Fortune

THE DEAL CHEST: CONSIGNMENT AND ESTATE SALE SERVICES The Traditional Estate Sale Reality: • Items are underpriced or quietly resold • Sales attract mostly local buyers, limiting competition • Inventory may be mixed with other estates • Fees often consume 30–50% of your proceeds

A SMARTER WAY TO SELL Owner James Fox is an experienced eBay consultant who knows not just what your items are worth, but where and how to sell them for maximum value. Sometimes that’s eBay. Sometimes it’s a specialty auction or a private collector. The strategy is always tailored to the item—and to you.

A Slice of Italy Without the Plane Ticket:

A Pizza Lover’s Guide to Naples Ristorante e Bar By Timothy Robinson

As the newest intern wandering the pages of South County Magazine, I’ve learned that the best stories often begin at the table—and as a self proclaimed pizza aficionado, I know a great one when I taste it.

M

y latest assignment brought me to Naples Ristorante e Bar in the Downtown Disney District, where a summer evening quickly became a mini escape to Italy.

An Italian Evening in the Heart of Downtown Disney With its inviting patio, lively dining room, and second-floor balcony overlooking the energy of Downtown

34

Disney, Naples captures the feeling of an Italian evening where diners are meant to linger over meals. There’s no rush here. Guests settle in with conversation, share plates, sip something refreshing, and embrace the simple pleasure of gathering around good food. Of course, I came for the pizza— and Naples delivered. The secret begins with Caputo flour imported from Naples, the same region that inspired the restaurant’s name and culinary roots. The dough emerges from the wood-fired oven with that perfect balance of a beautifully blistered crust, a tender center, and just enough chew to hold each carefully selected topping. The San Marzano tomatoes bring bright, authentic flavor, whether you’re enjoying the classic Margherita or the Prosciutto e Melone Bianche, a creative nod to the beloved Italian antipasto pairing salty prosciutto and sweet melon.

Before the pizza arrived, the Sicilian Arancini set the tone—crispy golden bites with a satisfying contrast between the crunchy exterior and rich, comforting filling. The menu continues its Italian journey with house-made pastas, including the coastal-inspired Linguine & Clams, reminiscent of the Campania region’s seaside flavors, and the Ravioli Pomodoro, where fresh tomato and basil create a beautifully simple dish.

Beyond the Pizza: Classic Italian Comfort with a Modern Touch While Naples may be a dream destination for pizza lovers, the menu offers plenty for every palate. Heartier selections include thoughtfully prepared meat dishes that add a sophisticated touch to the Italian-inspired offerings, along with salmon entrées featuring fresh, vibrant flavors that feel right at home in a Mediterranean setting. Pair the meal with an Aperol Spritz, a seasonal mocktail, or a crisp glass of pinot grigio, and suddenly the magic of la dolce vita feels wonderfully close. At Naples Ristorante e Bar, you don’t need a passport to experience the flavors, warmth, and leisurely spirit of Italy—you only need a seat at the table.

here are vacations, and then there are the ones that become family legends. The kind everyone talks about long after the suitcases are unpacked. Traveling with grandparents and teenagers isn't always easy, but Hawaii proved to be one of those rare destinations where every generation found something to love. Rich history, unforgettable culture, incredible food, world-famous beaches, and enough shave ice and malasadas to keep everyone smiling – it didn't take long for Oahu to work its magic on our family.

Fresh catch selections, expertly prepared with bright citrus and island herbs, sat alongside comforting favorites elevated with Hawaiian flair. Our work was cut out for us in deciding between the abundant options of shareable appetizers (edamame and mushroom dumplings, a variety of sushi rolls and Kagoshima A5 Wagyu Beef Katsu), colorful salads featuring locally grown produce and decadent desserts.

CIRQUE DU SOLEIL ‘AUANA

Our family are huge fans of Cirque du Soleil – both the residencies in Las Vegas and the touring shows that come to Orange County each year. But I have to say, Cirque du Soleil's 'Auana - the first resident Cirque du Soleil production in Hawai’i – was an exceptionally original, spectacular show blending the company's signature acrobatics with Hawaiian storytelling, music, hula, and traditions in

Worth special mention are the Pūlehu Steak Selection and Yuzu Miso Cod. The first is flame grilled and enhanced with Hawaiian salt, roasted garlic, miso mushroom medley, fried leeks, port wine jus while the latter literally melts in your mouth flavorfully prepared with miso glaze, broiled, swiss chard, finger limes, watermelon radish, ginger scallion pesto. The combination of exceptional cuisine, gracious service, and a relaxed atmosphere makes The Kini Room more than just a hotel restaurant – it’s a true gathering place.

PEARL HARBOR

Some attractions entertain. Others stay with you forever. Visiting Pearl Harbor and the USS Arizona Memorial was easily one of the most meaningful experiences of our trip. As someone of Japanese heritage, I approached the visit with a mixture of curiosity and emotion. Standing above the resting place of so many servicemen offered a powerful reminder of the human cost of war. Sharing that experience with my teenagers made it even more significant. Watching history come alive beyond the pages of a textbook sparked conversations our family will remember long after this vacation. The memorial isn't simply a stop on a sightseeing itinerary – it's an opportunity for reflection, understanding, and appreciation.

Cirque du Soleil's 'Auana a way that feels both innovative and deeply respectful of the islands' rich cultural heritage. From gravity-defying aerial performances to breathtaking feats of strength and artistry, every scene were completely captivated. My teens were mesmerized by the incredible athleticism, while grandma raved about how the production beautifully wove together Hawaiian legends and history with world-class theatrical performance. It was one of those rare shows that truly appeals across generations, leaving all of us talking about our favorite moments long after the curtain came down. Pairing an exceptional dinner at The Kini Room with an evening at ‘Auana provided the perfect reminder that Waikīkī offers so much more than beautiful beaches. Between out-

land villages, watched skilled artisans at work, and learned about customs that have been preserved for generations. Even our teenagers, who are usually difficult to impress, found themselves completely engaged. As the sun began to set, we gathered for the Ali'i Luau, where Hawaiian hospitality takes center stage. A delicious feast of island favorites (and I do mean feast with a dizzying array of options including favorites like kalua pork, lomi lomi salmon, teriyaki chicken, fresh tropical fruits, poi, and a variety of traditional Hawaiian side dishes), accompanied by traditional music, dance, and storytelling, created one of those evenings where no one reached for their phone because everyone was simply enjoying the moment. The perfect finale was Ha: Breath of Life, an extraordinary theatrical production featuring breathtaking choreography, fire knife dancing, music, 37

and spectacular special effects. The emotional story celebrating love, family, and resilience was easily one of the finest live performances we've ever experienced.

Named after legendary Hawaiian waterman Duke Kahanamoku, this iconic beachfront restaurant is a favorite for both visitors and locals seeking an authentic taste of paradise. With its open-air ambiance, friendly service, and front-row views of Diamond Head and Waikiki's rolling surf, Duke's Waikiki is one of Honolulu's most beloved dining destinations and a must-visit for anyone looking to experience the beauty, culture, and flavors of Hawaii. Speaking of which, you’ll definitely want to sample Duke’s signature Hula Pie made with macadamia nut ice cream stacked high on a scrumptious chocolate cookie crust.

Its oceanfront setting and thoughtfully curated displays make it an easy stop for families, nature lovers, and anyone looking to experience another side of O'ahu.

LEONARD'S BAKERY

Ask almost anyone about must-try treats in Honolulu, and Leonard's Bakery will almost certainly make the list. For our part, we literally made a daily stop for their famous malasadas – light, fluffy Portuguese doughnuts served warm and coated in sugar. Filled with everything

from custard to haupia (Hawaiian coconut pudding), they disappeared almost as quickly as they arrived. Traveling with three generations reminded me that the best vacations aren't measured by how many attractions you check off a list. They're measured by the moments shared together. Hawaii gave us all history lessons, cultural discoveries, unforgettable performances, incredible meals, and countless opportunities to slow down and simply enjoy each other's company. For our family, Oahu wasn't just another vacation destination – it was the perfect place to create memories that will span generations.

Solo Beauty’s back applicator brings independence to an everyday routine

The product’s first real test came at a local farmers market. “I had no idea who would be interested in my back applicator, but I knew how much I loved it,” she says.

The response surprised her. Customers with arthritis, multiple sclerosis, shoulder limitations and physical therapy needs began purchasing Solo Beauty. People who lived alone found it especially useful.

For Kathe D’Alfonso, a simple beauty routine became much more than a business idea. It became a mission rooted in gratitude, ingenuity and a desire to help others.

Coastal Shades Discover Premium Designs and Tailored Solutions for Every Room By Jody Robinson

I

n interviewing scores of entrepreneurs over the last 20+ years, I’ve learned that sometimes a business owners’ career trajectory is a straight line. For others, finding their true calling might have taken a bit more of a circuitous route. But in virtually every instance, the most successful professionals are those who are passionate about what they do. So much so that their daily responsibilities don’t feel much like work at all. Such is the case for Cesar Jimenez and his wife, Adria, who initially followed a different path before finding their shared passion for the home improvement industry. Today they own and operate a number of local businesses, including the San Clemente-based Coastal Shades, which specializes in motorized window coverings, blinds, interior and exterior shades, shutters and drapery. “My previous career had me traveling all over the country selling hardware and software for a telematics company,” says Cesar. “After years of living the traveling-salesman life and missing out on a lot of time with my wife and daughters, I decided to look into other career options.” 42

Cesar and Adria Jimenez Sitting on a park bench on a family vacation in Colorado, watching his kids ice skate, Cesar’s wife turned to him and asked why not start a business there? The very same day they started the search, they found a gentleman selling his window coverings company. When one door closes, a window opens, but not many blow open quite so quickly following the decision to make a life change. They immediately began the purchasing process, and a few short months later moved to the Centennial State to watch their new business flourish. When deciding to relocate to San Clemente to be closer to his wife’s family, the couple were excited for the opportunity to “be a part of the community for which we have such fond memories.”

Although new to the area, Cesar and Adria bring years of experience to Coastal Shades, the sister company of North County Blinds, a respected name in the window-covering industry in San Diego since 1985. “Continuing the legacy of excellence set forth by North County Blinds, Coastal Shades brings decades of experience, knowledge, and expertise to every project we undertake,” says Cesar. “Our team of highly skilled professionals are passionate about creating stunning window treatments that perfectly complement any space.” The hallmarks of Coastal Shades’ service includes top-quality craftsmanship, personalized attention to detail, and a steadfast dedication to ensuring that every customer’s vision is brought to life. “We take pride in offering a wide range of design options, utilizing the latest materials and technologies to provide our clients with the best solutions for their unique needs,” says Cesar. “Our goal is to make your buying process as simple as possible. And our specialty is offering a customized, bespoke experience where we eliminate the headache. That’s it.” Sounds like a worthy goal to pursue after all.

Your Medicare Plan’s Annual Notice of Change

Your ANOC explains changes your plan will make for the upcoming year. It typically arrives by mail (or online if you’ve opted for electronic delivery) around the end of September. The ANOC compares your current benefits with what they will be in the new year. Changes may include: • Your plan will no longer be offered • Higher monthly premiums • Changes to deductibles or copays • Changes to the annual out-ofpocket maximum • Changes to your prescription drug formulary

I

n the Medicare insurance world, it’s called an Annual Notice of Change (ANOC).

If you have a Medicare Advantage plan (HMO or PPO) or a stand-alone Medicare Part D prescription drug plan, the ANOC applies to you. It does not apply to Medicare Supplement plans such as Plan F, G, or N.

The ANOC usually looks more like an ordinary pamphlet than an important notice, so don’t overlook it! Pay particular attention to changes that could negatively affect you. If your plan is ending, or your premiums, deductibles, copays, out-ofpocket maximum, or prescription costs are increasing, it may be worth reviewing your options for the upcoming year. Don’t let your ANOC surprise you this fall. If you have questions about changes to your Medicare Advantage HMO or PPO plan, call the number provided with this article. I or a highly qualified broker in my agency will be happy to help you understand your Medicare coverage options for the new year.

Stephanie Frisch is the owner of Insurance 101 and is an independent insurance broker dedicated to helping others make “educated decisions” about their insurance choices when it comes to Medicare. For answers to your questions, or no-fee consultation, call 949-292-4958.

This is where medical and scientific exAccording to Board-Certified Psypertise comes into play. chiatrist and Founder and Principal Investigator of GeoMind, Haig Goenjian, MD, those lengthy lists LOOKING BEYOND are actually a sign that the system is THE LABEL working as intended. “Side effects are identified through a meticulous, heavily regulated system, because patient safety is always the top priority,” says Dr. Goenjian, who has more than a decade of experience in neuropsychiatric clinic research, having investigated more than 250 clinical trials. “Even if something is highly unlikely to be related, it will still be listed as a side effect — that’s in the best interest of patient care. So if a patient reports something that seems unrelated — say, they caught a cold while on a ski trip — that could still be listed as a possible side effect. The investigator’s question would be: does this patient normally catch a cold on ski trips? If the answer is no, that may end up on the list of possible side effects. So depending on how where you read a side 44

In fact, many people experience few or no side effects at all. Genetics, metabolism, other medications, medical conditions, and even expectations can influence how someone responds. In fact, Dr. Goenjian explains that the “nocebo effect” can cause people to experience side effects simply because they expect them – “people can also show signs of the actual biological effect of that expected side effect, not just the perception of it. It really shows the power of the mind.” When recommending treatment, psychiatrists carefully weigh risks against benefits. For someone struggling with severe depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, or another psychiatric illness, the consequences of leaving the condition untreated may be far greater than the like-

lihood of experiencing significant side effects.

TRUST THE CONVERSATION, NOT THE CLICKBAIT Serious side effects often receive disproportionate attention online, while the most common reactions— such as mild nausea, headache, or temporary sleep changes—are usually manageable and often improve as the body adjusts. “A good patient-doctor relationship keeps the patient from being overwhelmed when there’s an expected side effect — particularly one that’s tolerable or not a safety risk,” says Dr. Goenjian. “There’s a difference between a safety risk and a side effect, and a difference between tolerable and intolerable. Being educated and knowing what to expect lets you know whether to continue the drug or not. If you could have continued and you stopped, you’re only hurting yourself by not getting a treatment you may have needed.” When it comes to lifesaving psychiatric treatment, informed decisions should be based on sound judgment, not fear.

Massage for Your Teenager? Bodywork Can Ease Adolescent Angst PROVIDED BY MICHELLE BRYANT

While teens may be less likely than their parents to go to a massage therapist, there are plenty of reasons why this age group should be encouraged to give it a try.

T

he benefits of massage are well documented, among them relief of muscle tension, lowered stress hormones, increased sense of relaxation, improved immune function, and even a heightened ability to concentrate, according to studies conducted by the Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami School of Medicine. But for teenagers, there's an additional payback. The teenage body is in the midst of transformation -- exponential growth and development in a rapid period of time. On the physical side, teens may be at increased risk for aches, pains, and injury. Many teens strain their bodies with competitive sports, get erratic sleep, and consume a less-than-optimal diet. Massage can help muscles recover from overuse, 50

and help balance the body and maintain that stability. Perhaps even more crucial, teen massage can help improve body image and sleep patterns, and contribute to decreased depression, anxiety, and stress. This keeps a teen connected to her body, even as it morphs in confounding ways. "Many teens are self-conscious, and not happy with their bodies," says Eeris Kallil, massage therapist and shiatsu instructor at the Boulder College of Massage Therapy, in Colorado. "Massage can help teens stay grounded." Bodywork has also been

reported to help mediate eating disorders, a growing concern among teens. Another potential plus: A beneficial, therapeutic relationship can develop between bodyworkers and teenagers during the years when adolescents need adult confidantes, but keep parents at a distance. The practitioner can become a supportive, trusted adult in a teen's life. And the session itself, according to Kallil, can be a way to deal with all the physical and emotional turmoil of this tender age.

Four Generations Deep:

How South County Pools Keeps Orange County Swimming Smoothly By Jody Robinson

For as long as we’ve lived in South County, our pool has been more than a backyard feature—it’s where weekends unfold, where friends gather, where summer seems to linger just a little longer.

A

nd for several years now, the quiet constant behind that enjoyment has been South County Pools. As a longtime weekly service client, I can say without hesitation that the care of our pool has been exceptional. Yes, the water is always balanced. Yes, the equipment runs smoothly. But what stands out most is the reliability, the communication, and the unmistakable sense that someone genuinely takes pride in the work being done.

A Legacy Built on Family Owned and operated by Sean Kosky, the company has served Orange County for more than a decade— but the family’s roots in the industry stretch back four generations. It began with Sean’s grandfather, Orville, who worked as a pool professional throughout the 1950s, ’60s, and ’70s. That knowledge was passed from father to son, and today the fourth generation remains actively involved.

What started as a family operation has grown into a comprehensive pool company offering residential and commercial construction, weekly pool and spa maintenance, equipment repair and replacement, energyefficient upgrades, and complete remodels. Everything is handled inhouse—a detail that speaks volumes about quality control and consistency.

Service That Shows Up For families like mine, what truly sets this company apart is how they operate. “Our business was built on family values, and that foundation still guides how we operate today,” Sean shares. “We believe the customer always comes first. We show up when we say we will, do the job thoroughly, and communicate honestly with our clients.” As a customer, I see that philosophy play out week after week. Technicians are extensively trained before managing their own routes. The

company uses modern service software that provides real-time updates after each visit, including water chemistry readings and exactly what was added. That level of transparency is reassuring—especially when you’re trusting someone with a significant investment. Sean himself grew up immersed in the industry, gaining handson experience with pool systems, equipment, and customer service from an early age. Over time, that foundation evolved into leading teams, overseeing complex builds and remodels, and upholding the standards set by the generations before him. “A pool is a major investment, and working with a company that truly cares makes all the difference,” he says. “When you focus on doing quality work and building trust, everything else falls into place.” From my perspective, that isn’t just talk. South County Pools has made pool ownership feel effortless. And that peace of mind allows us to simply enjoy it—exactly as it should be.

Cefali & Cefali, APC Trusted Accident Attorneys for the Most Serious Injuries By Jody Robinson

It’s a remarkable feeling when you find someone who truly takes your side. Whether in life, love, or even the courtroom—having a trusted partner who believes in you can make all the difference.

F

or attorneys Michael and Courtney Cefali, that partnership began long before law school. The two met years before earning their law degrees—Michael from Chapman University and Courtney from California Western—and their shared drive and devotion have since evolved into a thriving professional collaboration. In 2019, they launched Cefali & Cefali, APC, a San Juan Capistrano-based personal injury law firm built on passion, honesty, and advocacy for the everyday individual.

The Cefalis’ spirit of giving extends beyond the courtroom. Deeply rooted in the San Juan Capistrano community, they actively support organizations such as The Boys and Girls Club of Capistrano Valley (where Courtney serves on the Board of Directors), San Juan Capistrano Friends of the Library (Courtney is also a board member), CREER, the Pacific Marine Mammal Foundation, and Project Coyote. Michael, a proud member of the San Juan Capistrano Rotary Club, has been honored as a Paul Harris Fellow for his service.

From helping clients find top-tier medical specialists to negotiating fair settlements, the Cefalis and their dedicated fivemember team handle every case from start to finish with one goal in mind: the client’s well-being. “The insurance companies would like you to think they get to determine the value of your injuries or your suffering,” says Michael. “We’ll fight for every last penny because we know what our clients deserve.”

At the heart of Cefali & Cefali, APC, is an unshakable belief in doing what’s right—advocating fiercely, communicating openly, and standing shoulder to shoulder with their clients every step of the way. Because when someone truly takes your side—remarkable things can happen.

That fight—and the heart behind it—has earned the firm millions in recoveries each year and something equally valuable: trust. As of this writing, Cefali & Cefali boasts a perfect record of positive client reviews online. Client Jamie shared her experience: “I am so grateful for everything that Mike and his team did for me! He was so responsive, so kind, and it was clear from the start that he genuinely cared about me and my case. He’s not only a great lawyer but a great person—and that made all the difference. I’ve already recommended him to all of my friends.” Another client, Carrie, echoed that sentiment after she and her husband were injured in a freeway accident: “We felt bad about calling a lawyer, but after months of pain and medical treatment, a friend recommended Michael. From the beginning, he lived up to his core values of integrity, loyalty, and advocacy. He treated us like family and worked tirelessly to get us the outcome we deserved. We don’t trust many people—but we trust Michael and his team completely.” That combination of empathy, accessibility, and relentless advocacy defines the firm’s culture. “We craft each case personally, build every one for trial, and stay accessible to our clients,” says Michael. “Personal injury attorneys get a bad rap, but we’re really the good guys. I like to think of our firm as a pirate ship—nimble, clever, and tenacious. We pry money from greedy insurance companies and give it back to the people who deserve it.” 54
