Today, Harvard Eye offers expertise across cataract and comprehensive ophthalmology, cornea, glaucoma, medical and surgical retina, and oculoplastics, including functional and cosmetic services.

Shaping the Future of Eye Care By Jody Robinson

F

or more than five decades, Harvard Eye Associates has been helping Southern Californians see—and experience—the world more clearly. Founded in 1974 by Dr. Roger Ohanesian and Dr. Edward Kim, the practice celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2024 and has grown from two surgeons into one of Southern California’s largest and most established eye-care practices, with 18 ophthalmologists and optometrists.

coma and cataract surgeon, says the practice’s strength lies in its people as much as its specialties.

“We’re best known for our personalized approach to premium cataract surgery, LASIK and EVO ICL, Botox and facial rejuvenation, and our clinical research program,” says Brian T. Kim, M.D., medical retina and cataract surgeon. “As one of the few practices in Orange County with multiple subspecialists on staff, we’re able to offer seamless care as patients stay with highly trained experts at every step.”

Sonia B. Dhoot, M.D., medical retina and vitreoretinal surgeon, emphasizes the value of bringing those specialties together. “Complex eyes rarely stay in one lane,” she says. “Because our team spans cataract, retina, glaucoma, cornea, refractive surgery, and oculoplastics, those conversations happen quickly and the patient gets a coordinated plan.”

EXPERTISE UNDER ONE ROOF That breadth is central to Harvard Eye’s philosophy. Savak Teymoorian, M.D., M.B.A., an interventional glau-

“What sets our practice apart is our diversity, not just in the subspecialties of eye care we provide, but in the unique individuals and personalities who provide that care,” he says. “We don’t take a cookie-cutter approach to anyone; each patient deserves a plan tailored to them.”

For John A. Hovanesian, M.D., a cataract, cornea and refractive surgeon, the appeal of ophthalmology is personal. “Helping people with their vision is a joy and a remarkable privilege that I think about every day and with every patient,” he says.

INNOVATION WITH A PERSONAL TOUCH The practice also remains focused on what comes next. “We are committed to advancing the future of eye care through multiple active clinical trials across different specialties,” says Ye Elaine Wang, M.D., cataract and glaucoma surgeon. Research, however, is only part of the story. The practice’s physicians also teach, mentor and volunteer in the community. That commitment to the broader community now extends to collegiate athletics. Harvard Eye Associates is proud to be the Official Eye Doctors of UC Irvine Athletics, helping support the vision and eye health of Anteater student-athletes. For Ashraf F. Ahmad, M.D., cataract, refractive and cornea surgeon, that commitment ultimately comes down to the patient. “Ultimately, our goal is to remain at the forefront of ophthalmology while never losing sight of what matters most: treating every patient with the same attention, precision, and level of care that we would want for our own family.” At Harvard Eye Associates, five decades of experience provide the foundation—but personalized care, collaboration and innovation continue to shape the future.

Heritage Pointe

When Home Becomes a Community By Jody Robinson

T

here are some places where you immediately feel the difference. At Heritage Pointe in Mission Viejo, it’s the warmth that greets you at the door, the familiar faces in the hallway and the sense that residents aren’t simply being cared for – they’re genuinely known. For more than three decades, Heritage Pointe has been part of the Orange County community. Founded in 1992 by Meryl Schrimmer and Loretta Modelevsky in response to the need for a Jewish senior living community, Heritage Pointe has grown into a welcoming Assisted Living and Memory Care community for people of all backgrounds. “Our goal has always been to meet residents where they are, preserve their independence whenever possible and provide the right level of support while keeping them connected to the community and relationships they’ve built here,” says Executive Director Georgianna Mendez.

A CONTINUUM THAT FEELS LIKE HOME That philosophy is reflected in Heritage Pointe’s approach to care. Residents can continue calling the community home as their needs evolve, with Assisted Living, Memory Care and Sage Living – an enhanced level of support 8

for those who need more assistance than traditional Assisted Living but may not yet require Memory Care. But care is only part of the story. What truly distinguishes Heritage Pointe is its emphasis on belonging. Founded on Jewish values and traditions, the community warmly welcomes residents of all faiths and backgrounds, creating an environment where traditions are celebrated, relationships matter and everyone has a place at the table. “We believe senior living should be about much more than providing assistance,” Mendez says. “It should be about creating meaningful relationships, maintaining purpose, celebrating traditions and making sure every resident feels known and valued.” That philosophy extends to everyday life, from engaging activities and social gatherings to dining. Executive Chef Johnny has brought a fresh perspective to the kitchen, creating contemporary dishes with thoughtful presentation and turning mealtimes into another opportunity for residents to connect and enjoy themselves.

This October and November, Heritage Pointe is helping remove one of those hurdles by offering up to $1,000 toward professional moving expenses for new residents moving into the community. “It is one small way we can remove some of the logistical and financial stress from the process,” Mendez says. Because ultimately, the goal isn’t simply to unpack boxes and settle into a new apartment. It’s to discover new friendships, new interests and a renewed sense of connection. At Heritage Pointe, the next chapter isn’t about leaving home behind. It’s about finding a new place to call home.

MAKING THE MOVE EASIER For many families, the hardest part of considering senior living isn’t deciding that a change may be needed – it’s figuring out how to make the move happen.

The Best Time to Start Looking Is Before You Have To By Jay Minor

She had been living alone in her home for ten years, ever since her husband passed away.

L

ife was manageable, and moving into a senior living community was something she had thought about but never felt urgent enough to act on. Still, she was wise enough to know that someday it probably would be. So we started looking together. Over the course of about six months, we toured several communities across South Orange County. There was no pressure and no deadline. Just an honest, unhurried exploration of what was out there and what might feel like home someday.

Then, within the same week, two things happened. Her homeowner’s insurance company sent notice that they would not be renewing her policy. And her air conditioner went out. For many people, that combination would have triggered a panic — scrambling to find coverage, dealing with repair estimates, and facing the sudden weight of managing a home alone. But because she had already done the research, she did not have to panic. She knew exactly where she wanted to go. She made her decision quickly and confidently, and moved into the community she had already chosen, leaving the house repairs and insurance headaches behind her. That is what planning ahead actually looks like in real life. Not a rigid timeline or a checklist. Just the gift of knowing your options before circumstances force your hand. 10

I work with families who are at every stage of this process. Some come to me in crisis mode, needing to move a loved one within days. Others, like this woman, come before anything feels urgent at all. In my experience, the families who start early almost always have better outcomes — more choices, less stress, and decisions made from clarity rather than fear. One of the best ways to begin that process is simply to go look. Not to decide, but to experience. That is why I created the Senior Living Discovery Tour.

can save you months of uncertainty later. To learn more or reserve your spot on either tour, call me at 949-444-9055 or send me a quick email at jay@assistedlivinglocators.com. The best time to start looking is before you have to. You might be more ready than you think.

This December I am hosting two tours across South Orange County. On December 1st, we will visit two communities in the San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano area. On December 3rd, we will visit two communities in the Laguna Woods and Aliso Viejo area. At each stop you will have the chance to see the environment firsthand, enjoy a meal or refreshments, meet staff and residents, and get a genuine feel for what daily life looks like in each community. The tours are designed for people who are thinking about senior living within the next year or so — individuals who are ready to move from wondering to exploring. I have a brief conversation with each person beforehand to make sure the tour is a good fit. There is no cost and no obligation. Just honest, firsthand experience that

cleft lips and palates. The experience reinforced a shared belief that plastic surgery can be both technically transformative and profoundly personal. Dr. Bunkis went on to build a distinguished career recognized for meticulous surgical technique, innovation and a highly individualized approach to facial aesthetic surgery. His commitment to service extends beyond the practice through volunteer work with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department and his role as Honorary Consul for the Republic of Latvia. Years later, a reunion at a medical conference rekindled their friendship. Today, the two practice side-by-side in Corona del Mar, combining their talents to provide patients with comprehensive aesthetic and reconstructive care. Their collaboration is particularly valuable when a patient’s goals extend beyond a single procedure. While both surgeons independently perform a broad range of plastic surgery, they frequently operate together, bringing two experienced perspectives into the operating room.

EXCELLENCE IN AESTHETIC SURGERY Some partnerships are built in the boardroom. Others are forged over decades of friendship, mutual respect and a shared commitment to excellence.

A

t Orange County Plastic Surgery at CosmetiCare, the collaboration between Dr. Juris Bunkis and Dr. Deborah Ekstrom represents something special: two accomplished plastic surgeons with complementary expertise who have come together to offer patients a truly comprehensive approach to aesthetic surgery. Both surgeons grew up far from Southern California. Dr. Bunkis was raised in a mining town in Northern Ontario, Canada, while Dr. Ekstrom grew up on a dairy farm in Minnesota. Those humble beginnings instilled a strong work ethic and a genuine appreciation for caring for others—qualities that remain at the heart of their practice. 12

Two Distinguished Careers, One Shared Purpose Their professional paths were distinct before eventually converging. Dr. Ekstrom completed medical school in Minnesota, followed by a plastic surgery fellowship at the University of Massachusetts and a hand surgery fellowship in Connecticut. A year of psychiatric study also gave her an unusual perspective on the emotional side of medicine and the role confidence plays in a patient’s overall well-being. She first met Dr. Bunkis when he was a visiting professor. Their professional relationship deepened during a humanitarian medical mission to Guatemala, where Dr. Bunkis introduced her to advanced techniques for repairing

The Art of Facial Rejuvenation Facial rejuvenation has changed dramatically. Today, patients are looking for results that are youthful and refreshed—but never artificial. Dr. Bunkis is particularly known for his expertise in facial aesthetic surgery, including facelifts, neck lifts, brow lifts, eyelid surgery, rhinoplasty, skin resurfacing and comprehensive facial rejuvenation. Dr. Ekstrom brings another important dimension to facial rejuvenation through advanced fat-grafting techniques. Known by many of her patients as the “Newport Beach Fat Grafting Queen,” Dr. Ekstrom has developed a reputation for using a patient’s own fat to restore lost facial volume and soften the signs of aging. Rather than simply filling lines, strategic microfat grafting can help restore youthful fullness to areas such as the cheeks and temples while creating a more harmonious overall appearance. “Today’s patients are increasingly seeking subtle, natural enhancements that help them look as vibrant as they feel,”

says Dr. Ekstrom. “Our philosophy is to help patients look refreshed and rested, while still unmistakably themselves.”

creating a coordinated treatment plan rather than a series of disconnected procedures.

Fat grafting can be an especially powerful tool because facial aging is not simply about loose skin. As we age, we also lose volume. Restoring that volume can complement lifting procedures and help create a more youthful, balanced result.

“The goal is always to determine what will give the patient the most natural and beautiful result,” says Dr. Ekstrom. “Sometimes that means one procedure. Sometimes it means combining several techniques.”

For some patients, carefully placed fat grafting, laser resurfacing or eyelid rejuvenation may provide exactly the refinement they are seeking. For others, more significant laxity and tissue descent require a surgical lift. The key is determining what each face actually needs.

When Comprehensive Rejuvenation Is the Answer One patient illustrates the other end of the spectrum. The 79-year-old author pictured here who had never had any prior aesthetic procedures, came to see Dr. Bunkis for a consultation. She explained that she had won an award for writing and could not go accept the award “looking like this.” To achieve her goal of looking more youthful, she underwent a Newport Beach “Natural Facelift” by Dr. Bunkis, an endoscopic brow lift, cheek microfat grafting, full-face CO2 laser resurfacing, and upper and lower eyelid blepharoplasty (the after photos were taken at age 81).

Her transformation underscores an important point: facial rejuvenation is not one-size-fits-all. While one patient may benefit from volume restoration, another may require a comprehensive combination of procedures to address the effects of advanced facial aging. And that is where the collaboration between Dr. Bunkis and Dr. Ekstrom becomes particularly valuable.

Two Experts, One Operating Room Many of their more comprehensive procedures are performed as team surgery, allowing both surgeons to contribute their specialized expertise during a single operative experience. For the patient, that can mean less overall operating-room time while benefiting from two highly experienced surgeons working together at the table. Dr. Bunkis’s expertise in facial lifting and rejuvenation can be paired with Dr. Ekstrom’s mastery of fat grafting and soft-tissue restoration,

Resetting the Clock— Naturally A facelift repositions and tightens deeper facial tissues, restores youthful contours and removes excess skin. Fat grafting can restore volume. Laser resurfacing can improve skin texture and tone. Eyelid surgery can address one of the areas where aging often becomes most noticeable. Used individually or strategically combined, these procedures can create a refreshed appearance without erasing the character of the face. “On average, patients look 10 to 15 years younger after a facelift,” says Dr. Bunkis. “The clock doesn’t stop. Patients continue to age naturally, but they can maintain that relative advantage over time.” That philosophy—resetting the clock rather than stopping it—is central to their approach. Whether a patient needs subtle volume restoration, a facelift or a comprehensive combination of procedures, the objective remains the same: to help patients look like the best, most refreshed version of themselves. For Dr. Bunkis and Dr. Ekstrom, every treatment begins with listening, understanding and building trust. The techniques may be sophisticated, but the philosophy is simple: exceptional surgery should still feel personal. Interested in Looking Your Best?

FROM FORGOTTEN TO FOUND:

How The Deal Chest Unlocks the Hidden Value of Everyday Treasures By Jody Robinson

T

here’s a quiet thrill in discovery—the moment when an ordinary-looking object reveals an extraordinary story. For James Fox, owner of The Deal Chest, that moment has shaped a career spent uncovering hidden value and connecting overlooked treasures with collectors who truly appreciate them. The Deal Chest isn’t a trend-driven resale operation. It’s a deeply informed consignment business grounded in market knowledge, patience, and trust. Fox began selling on eBay in 1998, shortly after the platform launched, helping friends and family sell items they didn’t realize had value. What started as a side hustle gradually became a full-time calling. From 2011 through 2020, Fox worked as a full-time eBay consultant and consignment seller, completing more than 60,000 transactions and generating over $3.5 million in revenue for clients.

Knowing Where Something Belongs While eBay remains a powerful global marketplace, Fox is quick to point

out that it’s not always the best fit. “The goal is always to choose the selling method that maximizes value and convenience for the client,” he explains. Depending on the item, that might mean a specialty auction, a private collector, or a targeted marketplace. Knowing where something should be sold is often just as important as knowing what it’s worth.

A Lifelong Immersion in Collectibles Fox’s fascination with collectibles began in the late 1970s at sports card trade shows, long before the hobby went mainstream. He later earned a degree in Business Management from California State University, Fullerton, laying the groundwork for a sustainable business. From 1987 to 1996, he operated booths at trade shows buying and selling sports cards and memorabilia, sharpening both his instincts and his eye. Over the decades, Fox’s expertise has expanded across a wide range of

categories: sports memorabilia, rare coins, toys, vintage costume jewelry, clothing and accessories, vinyl records, watches, collectible books and magazines, vintage glassware, automotive collectibles, and more. Hundreds of estate auctions and years of tracking market trends have shaped his measured, informed approach. Another defining chapter came during Fox’s 20 years as a sales representative in the moving industry. Time and again, he watched homeowners discard or donate items worth significant money. The experience reinforced the value and importance of taking a second look before letting things go.

Making the Process Simple What truly sets The Deal Chest apart is Fox’s ability to demystify selling. Many people don’t know what items are valuable, and that’s perfectly normal. Fox makes the process transparent and approachable, often surprising clients with what their “clutter” is really worth. He’s sold everything from everyday nostalgia to rare, oneof-a-kind pieces, giving each item the same level of research, care and presentation. In a world where selling online is often oversimplified, Fox offers a timely reminder: maximizing value takes experience. And sometimes, it all starts with a quick call or text—before yesterday’s clutter becomes tomorrow’s missed opportunity.

LW CAR WASH

THE 100% HAND-WASHED DIFFERENCE At LW Car Wash 100% Hand Car Wash, Detailing and Gas Station, a clean car starts with a little more care—and ends with a whole lot more shine. By Jody Robinson

T

here’s something satisfying about driving away in a freshly washed car. The windows sparkle, the paint catches the California sun and, for a few minutes at least, the car feels almost new again. At LW Hand Car Wash, Detailing and Gas Station, that feeling is the point. Owned by Morris Olshansky and his son, Michael, LW Car Wash combines the convenience of a neighborhood gas station with the hands-on attention of a professional car wash. The business has been operating for six years, but the Olshanskys have been in the gas station and car wash business for nearly 40 years.

“We provide customers with excellent customer service and quality car washes,” says Morris. “We have great prices on gas as well as the car wash.” For drivers who appreciate the difference between a quick rinse and a car that has actually been cared for, the hand-wash approach is a welcome one. It’s a practical luxury—especially for those who want their vehicle looking its best without turning car care into an all-day project.

CHEAPEST GAS IN ORANGE COUNTY And there’s an added incentive to make LW Car Wash part of the regular routine: the station advertises the cheapest gas prices in Orange County. Fill the tank, grab a snack or drink from the mini market, and take care of the car while you’re there. It’s the kind of one-stop convenience that makes sense in a busy South County day. For Morris, the business is also the culmination of a career that began early. After earning a degree in mechanical engineering, he entered the gas station

and car wash business at a young age and eventually built four decades of experience in the industry. Today, he and Michael continue that family tradition with an emphasis on value and personal service. “We specialize in gas, mini markets and car wash operations,” Michael says, “and we want to give our customers great service.” That customer-first philosophy extends to seniors and military veterans, who receive $4 off interior and exterior car wash packages—a thoughtful way to say thank you while making professional car care a little more affordable. Because sometimes the best kind of convenience is also the simplest: pull in, fill up, let someone else handle the wash, and drive away with a car that looks—and feels—freshly cared for.

Don’t Risk Hiring Unlicensed Tradesmen! • Hire a Licensed Contractor with Workers Compensation Insurance!! • Ask to see the Contractors License Card and Worker’s Comp Certificate! If they can’t produce these items, send them on their way. By Joe Ronstadt, Sr. Hiring a legitimate licensed contractor gives you protection against the following:

INJURIES • Power Saws: Using Power saws while standing on step ladders and precariously balancing on beams is extremely dangerous! • Lifting Heavy Beams: Everyone knows lifting too much is hazardous. Most people do not realize how heavy these beams are. Back injuries are common. • Ladders and power tools: The risk of falling is real but adding in the use of large saws and drills, etc. only compound’s the danger.

NO RECOURSE if they are not licensed. What is your recourse if things don’t go as expected, like injury or poor workmanship? Who do you call? • No Contractor’s State License Board can help you. • No contractor’s Bond can help you. • What if they don’t finish the job and won’t return your calls? • Just because a friend or neighbor recommended an unlicensed individual posing as a contractor doesn’t mean that you’ll have the same experience.

COST • Many times, unlicensed individuals are more expensive or equal to the legal licensed contractors. If you don’t compare, you don’t know. For more info on our safety techniques and much more, see our website patiocoversoc.com. 18

HOW TO HIRE A LICENSED CONTRACTOR The starting point is checking all the normal credentials like CSLB license, insurance and references. But equally important is determining whether they are a good craftsman or not. If they are merely following industry standards of which have many flaws, they are falling short.

Some of the red flags that I see in advertising are as follows: • No License or Workers Compensation insurance. • Advertising for a trade that they are not properly licensed for. See (cslb. ca.gov). • False reviews. • False or exaggerated claims, i.e. years in business. • Using terms like: “combined years of experience.” The aggregate years of experience, of multiple individuals is irrelevant (example: when they say “Together, Smith & Jones have a combined experience of 50 years”). • The most important credential is not how many years, but the quality of craftsmanship. If a contractor uses poor techniques, the quantity of years is irrelevant.

TIP 2: Make sure they have workers compensation insurance!!! • Injuries are common in the construction industry. • Dangerous tools such as large saws are in use. • The use of ladders and heavy lifting is required. • With so many injury lawyers advertising on bill boards and such, injury fraud is a legitimate concern. A worker can fake an injury and an injury Attorney will sue the contractor and also the property owner.

TIP 3: The Lower the License Number, The Longer in Business. • Our License, established in 1984, Check Our License #452151 at (cslb. ca.gov)

Joe Ronstadt, Sr.

TIP 1: Don’t hire a drifter with no address! Look for the following: Make sure that you have enough information in case you need to sue. • Contractor’s license, address, legitimate company name, reviews, etc...

California Gun Services Helping families navigate the responsibility of firearms left behind

By Jody Robinson

For many seniors, widows, and adult children, the passing of a loved one brings an unexpected discovery layered into an already emotional time: firearms tucked away in closets, safes, nightstands, or garages—often accompanied by more questions than answers.

W

hat do you do with them? Are they legal to keep? Can they be sold, moved, or simply given away? For Jeff McCabe, owner of California Gun Services, these are not abstract questions—they are daily phone calls. “Most people don’t realize how complex California gun laws are until they’re suddenly responsible for a firearm they didn’t expect to have,” he says. “Many times, the firearm belonged to a late husband or father. The family doesn’t want it, but they also don’t know what to do with it.” Those moments reveal a gap between legal complexity and everyday understanding— especially for seniors who may no longer feel comfortable handling firearms, or heirs who want to do the right thing but don’t know where to begin.

WHERE LAW MEETS SENSITIVITY California’s firearm regulations 20

are not only detailed—they are constantly evolving. Even well-meaning actions, like transporting a firearm or attempting to “turn it in,” can inadvertently create legal issues. Beyond the law, there is also the human side: grief, memory, and sometimes hesitation about removing something that once belonged (or currently belongs) to a loved one like a recent case where McCabe assisted a family managing a father in the early stages of dementia. The firearms were legally owned, but the family needed a solution that prioritized safety without causing distress. “These situations require patience and respect,” he says. “It’s not just about removal—it’s about understanding what the family is going through.”

A TRUSTED GUIDE THROUGH A COMPLICATED PROCESS McCabe and his team offer in-home services designed to simplify what can otherwise feel overwhelming. Through California Gun Services, clients receive:

In cases of inheritance, McCabe often works alongside estate attorneys and family members to ensure everything is handled properly and respectfully. San Clemente resident Rhonda Murphy remembers the relief she felt after calling McCabe following her husband’s passing. “I didn’t want to keep the guns, and I wasn’t sure what was legal,” she says. “Jeff came to the house, handled everything professionally, and took the worry off my shoulders. It was one less thing to deal with during a very hard time.”

A SERVICE BUILT ON RESPONSIBILITY For McCabe, the mission is simple: reduce risk, ensure compliance, and bring peace of mind to families navigating a difficult transition. “Firearms can last longer than a lifetime,” he says. “Knowing what you have—and what to do with it—is essential.”

• On-site firearm audits and safety checks • Guidance on California compliance laws • Legal, documented disposal of unwanted firearms • Appraisal and purchase options for collections • Ammunition safety and storage reviews

“Typically, our kitchens will take two to four weeks and baths three to six weeks from demo to done!” Just as important, clients aren't left to navigate the remodeling process alone. As a licensed design-build firm, Designing Women guides homeowners from the initial design conversation and material selections through construction and the final walk-through.

YOUR HOME. YOUR LIFE. YOUR STYLE.

Designing Women: Where Beautiful Design Meets a Better Way to Remodel By Jody Robinson

T

here’s something exciting about remodeling a home. It’s the promise of a fresh kitchen, a more beautiful bathroom or an outdoor space that finally feels like an extension of the home. But anyone who has lived through a remodel knows that getting from the “before” to the “after” can be the challenging part. For more than three decades, Designing Women of Orange County has been changing that experience. Founded in 1991, the 100% femaleowned and operated design-build firm specializes in custom home remodeling and has expanded its expertise to include exterior landscape and hardscape design.

Owner Sabrina Phillips has always had a natural eye for design. “I’ve been drawing and planning out homes and buildings since I was a kid—drawing was a favorite pastime,” she says. “I became an artist in my teens and also began designing doctors’ offices.” Phillips went on to earn degrees in Business, Marketing and Programming, combining her understanding of how businesses and systems work with her artistic background. At just 25, she brought those skills together to form her own design firm. Today, that unique combination of creativity and process remains at the heart of Designing Women.

A BETTER REMODELING EXPERIENCE What truly sets the company apart is its proprietary, systemized approach to managing projects. The goal is simple: deliver beautiful, high-quality work without dragging the remodeling process out for months. “We have a proprietary, systemized way of running our projects that allows us to provide high-quality workmanship yet hand over the finished project in record time,” Phillips explains.

22

For Phillips, however, remodeling is about much more than finishes and floor plans. It’s about the relationship built along the way. “Remodeling is about so much more than creating a beautiful home—it’s about trust, collaboration and creating long-lasting relationships,” she says. That philosophy is reflected in the company’s upbeat approach and its genuine respect for the responsibility of being invited into someone’s home. Thoughtful planning, clear communication and quality craftsmanship are all part of the process. “We love what we do, so we bring a positive, fun attitude to each of our clients’ projects,” Phillips says. Ultimately, the goal isn't simply to create a picture-perfect room. It’s to also create a home that works better for the people living in it—a place that feels personal, functions beautifully and will be enjoyed for years to come. For Designing Women of Orange County, it all comes back to six simple words: Your Home. Your Life. Your Style.

THE HEART BEHIND THE CARE When Someone You Love Needs Help at Home With Segal Ronen, President of Your Home Care

I

f we were sitting together talking about care for yourself or someone you love, I would start here: you don’t have to have everything figured out before you call us. For more than a decade, I’ve had the privilege of helping hundreds of families find care. Whether you’re preparing for recovery or noticing that everyday life is getting harder, I want to understand what would make a difference for you.

Why does remaining at home matter so much? Home is a familiar chair, a morning routine, the people and places we love. Accepting help shouldn’t mean giving up the choices that make life feel like your own. Sometimes support is needed during recovery; sometimes needs grow gradually. We provide nonmedical help with daily life, while respecting what someone wants to keep doing for themselves. That matters to the person receiving care and to the family who loves them.

What makes care feel personal at Your Home Care? I stay closely involved, and our team takes time to know our families. We ask about routines, preferences and the help someone feels comfortable accepting. Those details help 26

us find a caregiver who feels like a good fit.

When do families typically call you?

We are licensed, bonded and insured. Our caregivers are registered, fingerprinted and background-checked. Just as important to me are kindness, dependability and respect for the person welcoming us into their home.

Often, it’s before or after surgery or a hospital stay. Coming home can be a relief, but families wonder: Who will help with bathing and dressing? Prepare meals? Be there during recovery?

Trust grows in those everyday moments: listening, remembering a preference, taking time for a conversation. Many caregivers become trusted companions. That is the kind of relationship we hope to build.

We help put that everyday support in place while working alongside your medical team’s instructions. Some people need substantial help at first; others need scheduled visits. We talk with you about what fits. We’ve helped clients return home after sur-

gery at Hoag, Kaiser and outpatient surgery centers, as well as rehabilitation and skilled nursing stays. Families also call for companionship, help with daily routines or a break for a family caregiver. You don’t have to wait for a crisis to reach out.

Can an existing insurance policy help pay for care? Yes, an existing long-term care insurance policy may help with eligible home care. We work with carriers including John Hancock, CNA, Genworth, Lincoln, State Farm, Transamerica and Unum.

ters to you and your loved one, and where help is needed most. Together, we discuss care, schedule and cost, then work to find a suitable caregiver. You should know what to expect and whom to contact. As needs change, our team stays involved and adjusts with you. It is an honor when a family entrusts someone they love to us. We never take that trust for granted.

Tell us about your policy, and we can explain our role in care documentation and coordination. Your insurer determines eligibility, covered services and any waiting period. We also serve SCAN members through The Helper Bees network and have had the privilege of serving many seniors through local grant programs. Private-pay families are welcome too.

4-Hour to 24-Hour Care Not sure where to begin? Call me. I’d be happy to listen and talk through your options.

YOU DON’T HAVE TO FIGURE THIS OUT ALONE. Let’s talk. I’d be honored to support you and your family. Call me directly at

The Lodge at Torrey Pines

Luxury, Ocean Views & Craftsman Charm

By Jody Robinson Sometimes the best vacations don’t require a boarding pass – just a full tank of gas and a favorite friend riding shotgun.

That’s exactly what I discovered during a recent girlfriends’ getaway to The Lodge at Torrey Pines in La Jolla. Less than an hour from our Orange County homes, it was an effortless drive that somehow transported us into an entirely different frame of mind. The pace slowed. The ocean air worked its magic. Suddenly, work deadlines and overflowing calendars felt miles away. 32

From the moment we arrived, the property invited us to exhale. Inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement, the lodge feels both grand and welcoming, with handcrafted wood details, rich stonework, warm earth tones, and beautiful architectural touches that celebrate California craftsmanship. Massive fireplaces, cozy seating areas, and thoughtfully curated artwork create an ambiance that’s elegant without ever feeling pretentious. Perched above the dramatic cliffs of Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve and overlooking the Pacific Ocean, the setting alone is enough to make you linger a little longer.

LUXURY WITH ROOM TO BREATHE

Our guest rooms became an extension of the peaceful surroundings. Spacious and beautifully appointed, the accommodations blended classic design with modern comforts. The private balcony invites sipping coffee in the morning while listening to birdsong and ending each evening with a glass of wine as the coastal breeze rolls in. The beauty of this Five Diamond luxury coastal resort is that it encourages you to slow down without ever running out of things to enjoy. One morning, we joined a yoga class before lacing up our walking shoes to explore the nearby trails of Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve. The hiking paths wind through rare Torrey pine trees before

As our getaway came to an end, I couldn’t help but appreciate how refreshing it felt to escape without traveling very far. The Lodge at Torrey Pines proves that sometimes the most memorable vacations are hiding just down the coast. It offers the perfect combination of refined luxury, natural beauty, exceptional dining, and opportunities to reconnect – with nature, with friends, and with yourself.

A.R. Valentien opening to breathtaking ocean vistas, sandstone cliffs, and panoramic coastal views. Whether you’re an avid hiker or simply looking for a leisurely walk, it’s one of Southern California’s most spectacular natural landscapes. Back at the lodge, we rewarded ourselves with what every girlfriends’ getaway deserves: absolutely nothing on the agenda. We relaxed beside the pool, wandered the beautifully landscaped grounds, browsed the boutique gift shop, and simply enjoyed uninterrupted conversation – something that’s surprisingly rare in everyday life.

an occasion all its own. The elegant yet relaxed atmosphere made it easy to savor every bite without feeling rushed. For my part, my favorite moments weren’t the planned activities. They were the quiet ones – settling into an Adirondack chair overlooking the golf course, watching the light change across the cliffs, or gathering around one of the lodge’s outdoor fire pits after sunset. There’s something incredibly restorative about sharing simple moments with a close friend in such an inspiring setting.

If you’re looking for an easy escape that feels wonderfully removed from everyday life, this coastal retreat checks every box. Sometimes all it takes is one weekend away to return home feeling completely renewed.

A Girls’ Night Out, Hidden in Plain Sight By Jody Robinson There are girls’ nights out, and then there are evenings that feel like you’ve stumbled into a secret. That was the feeling I imagined stepping into Highball and Naisho Omakase, two new Costa Mesa concepts that opened side by side earlier this year. The plan is simple enough: cocktails first, sushi second. But the experience is anything but ordinary. I’d start at Highball, where Japanese cocktail culture takes center stage. There’s something wonderfully oldschool about a bar that isn’t trying to reinvent everything. Instead, bartenders Justin Oh and Tony Morabito focus on doing the classics exceptionally well, embracing monozukuri – the Japanese art of making things with intention. Even the humble highball becomes a study in precision. Whisky, soda, ice. That’s it. Yet when every detail matters, simplicity suddenly feels luxurious. For a girls’ night, I love the idea of settling in with a beautifully made Gim34

let or discovering something more unexpected, like Chu-Hi, with Shine Muscat grape and earthy marshmallow root. It’s the kind of place where conversation can linger over a cocktail rather than compete with it. Then comes the reveal. Behind a velvet curtain is Naisho Omakase, a hushed 14-seat sushi theater helmed by Chef Shimpei Shinohara. The transition feels almost cinematic: one moment you’re enjoying the energy of the bar, and the next you’re seated at an intimate counter, watching dinner unfold bite by bite. The 12- or 16-course omakase doesn’t follow a predictable script. Chef Shimpei plays with temperature, texture, smoke, salinity and fat, turning each course into its own little surprise. Sea Shokupan starts with a luxurious bite of Uni, caviar, burnt honey and a sprinkling of truffle salt atop a buttery cloud-like milk bread, while the Tuna-mi packs a literal tsunami of umami into one tin: Luscious Miso Toro Tartare meets the sharp, rhythmic crunch of pickled yellow

radish, finished with dashi-marinated ikura for a saline pop. What makes the evening especially memorable is the intimacy. Fourteen seats means no sprawling dining room, no feeling lost in the crowd – just a front-row seat to the craft. And isn’t that what we want from a girls’ night? A little glamour, plenty of deliciousness and a story to tell afterward. At Highball and Naisho, the best part may be that the evening doesn’t announce itself. You simply follow the cocktails, pass through the curtain and discover what’s waiting on the other side.

COASTAL COMFORT MEETS DATE-NIGHT DINING

With a flexible Chef’s Menu, attentive service and a setting steps from the sand, Watertable makes dinner feel like a vacation. By Jody Robinson

T

here’s something about a night at the beach that makes dinner feel a little more special. Recently, my husband, Tim, and I headed to Watertable at the Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach for a date night that combined the easygoing beauty of the coast with an elevated dining experience. Located just steps from the sand, Watertable feels distinctly Huntington Beach. The setting is stylish without being stuffy, with a relaxed coastal ambiance that makes it equally inviting for a romantic dinner, a special occasion or a leisurely evening with friends. From the welcoming service to the comfortable, sophisticated surroundings, we immediately settled into vacation mode – even though we were only a short drive from home. One of the highlights of the evening was the Chef’s Menu, which puts a personal spin on dinner. Guests can select their preferred protein, sauce and side, creating a meal tailored to their tastes. It’s a fun approach that gives diners the freedom to build a plate that suits their mood while still showcasing the kitchen’s attention to quality and presentation. Tim chose the 6-ounce filet, which arrived grilled to perfection, tender and beautifully prepared. He paired it with 36

grilled asparagus and a silky white wine butter sauce – a classic combination that let the quality of the steak shine. He also enjoyed the Watertable Wedge salad, a crisp and flavorful start to the meal that offered a nice contrast to the richness of the entrée. I began with the hamachi crudo, a beautifully presented appetizer that was fresh, delicate and full of flavor. It was the kind of dish that felt light and refreshing while still making an impression. For my entrée, I chose the salmon, which offered a satisfying balance of richness and freshness and made for a memorable main course. Beyond the food, part of what made the evening enjoyable was the pace. The menu is complemented by a thoughtful selection of fine wines and craft cocktails, making it easy to linger over a drink, talk and simply enjoy the surroundings. Our attentive service added to the experience without ever

feeling intrusive, allowing us to settle in and enjoy our time together rather than feel rushed through dinner. There’s also something particularly appealing about dining at a resort when you aren’t actually on vacation. Watertable gave us the feeling of getting away for the evening without the hassle of packing a suitcase or traveling far. After dinner, being so close to the beach made the setting feel even more special – a reminder of how much there is to enjoy right here in our own backyard.

STEP INTO THE FOG AT

KNOTT’S SCARY FARM Where nightmares come to life – and Southern California’s Halloween tradition gets even darker.

T

here’s Halloween, and then there’s Knott’s Scary Farm. Returning Sept. 17 through Oct. 31, Southern California’s longest-running Halloween theme park event transforms Knott’s Berry Farm into a fog-filled world where monsters lurk around every corner and even familiar streets feel deliciously sinister. This year’s fright factor gets a fresh jolt with two new mazes. In Inked, a washed-up 1930s cartoonist discovers that when blood becomes ink, his murderous cartoon characters can leap from imagination into reality. Unearthed takes guests deep into an excavation site, where the discovery of ancient tablets awakens a malevolent force that should have remained buried. That’s just the beginning. Ten mazes, five scare zones and two new shows – including Voodoo: Bayou’s Edge, featuring Marie Laveau and Baron Samedi, and Occultum Curated by Magic Castle – promise plenty of reasons to keep wandering after dark. Fan favorite The Hanging – Noose Maxxxing returns with its signature mix of gore and laughs. And don’t expect to find refuge between mazes. Hundreds of monsters take over the midways, from the fog-shrouded Ghost Town Streets to the reimagined CarnEVIL. For those who like their Halloween with a serious adrenaline rush, this is one Southern California tradition that remains frighteningly hard to resist. A Second Chance— and a Simple Solution

Solo Beauty’s back applicator brings independence to an everyday routine By Jody Robinson

For Kathe D’Alfonso, a simple beauty routine became much more than a business idea. It became a mission rooted in gratitude, ingenuity and a desire to help others.

A

t 25, D’Alfonso visited a dermatologist after her mother insisted a large black mole looked suspicious. The mole was removed and initially deemed benign. Three weeks later, the doctor’s office called with startling news: the wrong report had been reviewed. D’Alfonso actually had Stage 3 malignant melanoma. “I believe that was a second chance of life,” she says. After surgery and the worry of whether the cancer had been completely removed, D’Alfonso received the allclear on Mother’s Day 31 years ago. The scar remains a daily reminder of what she survived.

She went on to build Expozures, an embroidery, design and printing business that remains strong today. Then, about four years ago, another idea took shape—literally.

The product’s first real test came at a local farmers market. “I had no idea who would be interested in my back applicator, but I knew how much I loved it,” she says. The response surprised her. Customers with arthritis, multiple sclerosis, shoulder limitations and physical therapy needs began purchasing Solo Beauty. People who lived alone found it especially useful. “I was so happy that my product was helping so many people,” D’Alfonso says. Today, Solo Beauty is a true grassroots operation, made in New York with help from her husband, who cuts the templates. D’Alfonso handles orders herself and often calls customers afterward to see how they’re doing.

D’Alfonso wanted an easier way to apply lotion to her own back. “I Kathe D’Alfonso, was excited with an idea Founder for a back applicator that And the most satisfying would make putting your feedback? When “I’m Fine” Isn’t the Whole Story By Carla DiCandia

ctober offers an important reminder to check in—not only on our physical health, but on our emotional well-being, too. National Depression and Health Screening Month encourages us to recognize the signs of depression and other mental health concerns, while Mental Health Awareness Week, October 4–10, shines a light on the importance of speaking up and seeking support. The average person waits five years before seeking treatment, often chalking up changes in mood, sleep or energy to stress, a busy schedule or lack of sleep. Screening can help us recognize patterns we may have internalized or dismissed and determine when it’s time to seek support. For many people, asking for help can be the hardest part. Depression doesn’t always look like sadness. It can show up as fatigue, irritability, difficulty sleeping, loss of interest in favorite activities,

A Legacy of Hope KRISHNA JESSICK HONORED FOR A LIFETIME OF PUTTING PEOPLE FIRST

PEOPLE BEFORE PROFIT Perhaps what distinguishes Krishna most is the conviction behind her work. In an industry increasingly shaped by corporate consolidation, she has remained fiercely committed to maintaining clinical quality and personal connection. That commitment has sometimes come at a personal cost. Krishna has provided scholarships for clients who could not afford treatment and personally helped sustain operations during difficult economic periods. For her, the business has never been simply a business. It is a calling.

Krishna joined by her children Jonathon Jessick, Shonte Perluss, Celeste SeilerZlatich and Alexandra Jessick

There are awards that recognize achievement—and then there are awards that recognize a life’s purpose.

O

n August 21, 2026, at the Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel, San Juan Capistrano resident Krishna Jessick received the Sierra Tucson Gratitude for Giving Lifetime Achievement Award during Orange County’s ninth annual Gratitude for Giving Celebration. The morning brought together leaders and advocates from across the behavioral health community to celebrate individuals whose work has made a lasting difference in the lives of others. Krishna’s recognition was particularly meaningful because of who nominated her. A remarkable 15 nomination letters were submitted independently by peers, clinicians, former clients and family members throughout Southern California—a record level of community support that spoke volumes about the breadth of her impact.

A CAREER BUILT ON COMPASSION For more than three decades, Krishna has devoted her career to behavioral health, beginning with hands-on, street-level outreach and eventually serving in advisory capacities with local drug courts. Along the way, she became a passionate advocate for 44

treating the whole person rather than simply addressing a diagnosis. As co-founder and owner of Casa Recovery in San Juan Capistrano, Krishna helped create a boutique, familyowned approach to mental health and addiction treatment more than 15 years ago. Her philosophy has remained remarkably consis- tent: people deserve dignity, individualized care and a genuine opportunity to heal. Long before integrative treatment became a familiar concept, Krishna was championing whole-person recovery, recognizing the connection between emotional trauma and the body. Under her leadership, Casa Recovery embraced approaches including somatic work, acupuncture, bodywork and meditation alongside traditional behavioral health treatment.

And while she has spent years leading an organization, Krishna is perhaps best known for doing something much simpler: showing up. She has been known to sit on Casa Recovery’s patio and spend time in heartfelt conversation with clients— sometimes without them even realizing that the woman listening so intently is the owner.

A DAY OF GRATITUDE Before Krishna accepted her award, guests watched a video celebrating her career and the lives touched by her work. Then came the moment of recognition—a fitting tribute not only to professional longevity, but to the countless families restored, relationships rebuilt and lives given another chance. For Krishna, the greatest measure of success has never been a title or an accolade. It is the person who finds hope again. After more than 30 years in behavioral health, that may be the most meaningful legacy of all.

Medicare Annual Enrollment Period This Annual Enrollment Period is unprecedented for many reasons.

Multiple plans are leaving the Medicare Advantage plan program for various reasons. It’s your responsibility to make sure you’re aware of what is happening to your plan for next year. This pertains only to Medicare Prescription drug plans and Medicare Advantage plans such as HMO’s and PPO’s. If you don’t pay attention you may find yourself without a plan for the new year. When a plan exits for the next plan year you have until 12/31 (not 12/7 as with the deadline for the annual enrollment period) to enroll in a new plan for the upcoming year that will have a January 1st effective date, meaning no lapse in coverage for you.

Regarding Medicare Advantage plans that are ending for 2027. If you’re on an HMO that is ending, the solution is straightforward. What is your current medical group and what insurance companies have a contract with them (and hopefully for years to come) Once that’s established, what plan offers the best benefits. I’m talking about the premium, co-pays, and the out-of-pocket maximums. For those of you on Medicare Advantage PPO’s, all of your doctors most likely won’t line up in one network so you have decisions to make. To maintain all of your doctors and continue living a “no-referral” life means the added expense of a Medicare Supplement plan and a Medicare Prescription drug plan. Your acceptance is guaranteed because you’re losing your current plan next year. The biggest take-away that I can give you for making sure you don’t end up without coverage next year is to read your annual notice of change and don’t try to maneuver finding a new plan without the help of a licensed Medicare insurance broker that specializes in Orange County plans. Medicare Advantage plans vary by county. In my agency I have 3 very well qualified licensed Medicare Insurance brokers that specialize in Orange County. We are all located in the same building in 3 offices in San Juan Capistrano. Some of my brokers also will come to you if you’re no longer able or comfortable driving. 47

Napa, All Day

From the first pour to the last course, savoring the valley from morning to night By Jody Robinson

Casa Mani Resort Napa Valley

T

here are weekends when you want to see and do everything, and then there are weekends when the real luxury is having nowhere you absolutely need to be.

offer warm, earthy interiors, teakwood accents, spa-inspired bathrooms, espresso machines and sommelier-style wine coolers. Select accommodations even have private patios with fire pits – exactly the sort of detail that encourages you to pour one more glass and stay awhile.

For my husband Tim and me, a recent getaway to Napa Valley with friends was a little of both. We came for the wine, of course, but also for the food, scenery, conversation and the simple pleasure of lingering over a glass of Cabernet without watching the clock. Our home base was the newly reimagined Casa Mani Resort Napa Valley, Curio Collection by Hilton (Hilton.com), a seven-acre resort just a mile from historic downtown Napa. From the moment we arrived, Casa Mani felt less like a hotel and more like our own little Napa retreat. The property combines a polished, contemporary design with an easy wine-country sensibility. Its 203 rooms and suites 52

Our group quickly fell into the rhythm of the place: coffee and conversation in the morning, exploring during the day, then returning to Casa Mani to relax by the resort-style pool or meet for a drink. There’s also a fitness center and a full-service spa, complete with

five treatment rooms, a relaxation lounge and hydrotherapy. The coed thermal circuit, with sauna, steam room and cold shower, makes a particularly tempting post-wine indulgence. And then there is dinner.

AN EVENING AT BOA

One of the best parts of staying at Casa Mani is not having to get back in the car after a day of tasting. We simply changed for dinner and headed to BOA Steakhouse, the resort’s candlelit steakhouse. The atmosphere strikes just the right note for a friends’ weekend – upscale without feeling overly formal, with lantern light, intimate tables and the kind of setting that makes you want to settle in. BOA specializes in dryaged prime steaks, thoughtfully chosen wines and classic steakhouse accompaniments, with the Napa Valley providing a particularly appropriate backdrop. The menu goes well beyond a conventional steakhouse: think the tableside Caesar salad, one of BOA’s signature preparations, followed by a substantial steak such as the 15-day dry-aged bone-in ribeye or one of the Japa-

nese A5 Wagyu selections. The menu also includes more distinctive starters such as Hokkaido scallops baked in the shell with garlic butter and breadcrumbs or the Wagyu meatball with pomodoro and crostini. For a memorable side, the “Boujee” twice-baked potato with crème fraîche, chives and Royal Select caviar gives the meal an appropriately indulgent Napa feel. Dinner here became one of those meals where the food almost takes a back seat to the conversation. Almost.

NAPA BY RAIL: GOURMET EXPRESS LUNCH

There are plenty of ways to experience Napa Valley: settle into a tasting room, wander through a vineyard, linger over lunch beneath an olive tree. But there is something wonderfully nostalgic about seeing Wine Country from the window of a moving train. The Napa Valley Wine Train (WineTrain.com) turns that nostalgia into a full-fledged experience. Departing from downtown Napa, the train travels a 36-mile round trip toward St. Helena and back, threading through vineyards, historic landmarks and some of the Valley’s most recognizable wine-growing landscapes. Rather than simply transporting passengers from one destination to another, the train makes the journey itself the destination.

their own winery, eventually releasing their first wines – Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay – in 1984.

Napa Valley Wine Train part of the journey, with seasonal, locally inspired dishes served at a decidedly unhurried pace. The result is less like grabbing lunch between winery appointments and more like spending an afternoon at a restaurant whose dining room happens to be moving through Napa Valley.

BELOW THE VINEYARDS AT ROMBAUER

The Rombauer tour and tasting experience offers a unique opportunity to step into one of Napa Valley’s enduring family wine stories.

Rombauer cave

And then there is the food. A welcome glass of sparkling wine sets the tone before the train eases out of the station and the first course arrives. Meals are designed as an integral

Rombauer Vineyards (Rombauer. com) traces its roots to 1972, when Koerner and Joan Rombauer moved their family to Napa Valley in search of a more agricultural, small-town way of life. The connection to food and wine was already part of the family story. Koerner’s great-aunt was Irma Rombauer, author of The Joy of Cooking, while his German ancestry reached back to the Rheingau wine region. In 1980, Koerner and Joan established

Rombauer’s Napa Valley property sits on a knoll along Silverado Trail in St. Helena, with views toward the Mayacamas Mountains and gardens containing more than 100 varieties of plants and flowers. Our cave tour and tasting took us underground to see where the wines are crafted before concluding with a lovely portfolio tasting and chocolate pairing. What makes Rombauer particularly memorable in the context of our earlier Wine Train experience is the contrast: one day is spent watching Napa roll past the windows of a historic railcar; the other is spent standing among the vineyards, barrels and gardens that give those wines their sense of place. Together, they transform wine tasting from a checklist of pours into a fuller understanding of Napa – its families, its landscape and the generations of winemakers who have helped shape the valley. In the end, it was less about checking places off a Napa itinerary and more about savoring the Valley together. Long lunches stretched into lazy afternoons, glasses were raised, stories lingered a little longer, and the beauty of the landscape seemed to invite us to slow down. Napa has a way of making even a short getaway feel like a true escape – and sharing it with good friends made the experience all the more memorable. 53

This Annual

MEDICARE Enrollment Period Is Unprecedented

By Stephanie Frisch

T

his Annual Enrollment Period is unprecedented for several reasons. Multiple plans are leaving the Medicare Advantage program, while many healthcare systems are still negotiating contracts with insurance companies for 2027 and beyond. The deadline for those negotiations is December 31, 2026. This isn’t a “doom and gloom” proclamation—it’s a call to attention. It’s your responsibility to understand what is happening to your Medicare plan for next year. This applies to Medicare Prescription Drug Plans and Medicare Advantage plans, including HMOs and PPOs. In my article last month, I discussed your Annual Notice of Change, which should have arrived by the end of September by mail or email if you opted for paperless communication. Please read it carefully. If your plan is ending for 2027, you could find yourself without coverage unless you take action.

If Your Prescription Drug Plan Is Ending Medicare drug plans have been ending over the past several years. In my educated opinion, the Inflation Reduction Act has played a major role as insurers face increasing costs. Unfortunately, many insurance companies have also stopped compensating brokers for helping individuals enroll in their remaining prescription drug plans. That makes choosing the right drug plan especially challenging for those 54

with a Medicare Supplement, since your Supplement benefits don’t change. Your Part D prescription plan, however, could be ending or your premium could increase. To compare 2027 drug plans, create an account at Medicare.gov and enter your current medications. The site will show available plans, with the least expensive option appearing below your current plan. If your current plan remains the best option, you can allow it to automatically renew. If you need to change plans, select “enroll” and follow the instructions. If you need assistance, call Medicare at 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-6334227) or contact a prescription drug company directly through Medicare. gov.

If Your Medicare Advantage Plan Is Ending If you’re enrolled in an HMO that is ending, determine which insurance companies have contracts with your current medical group. Then compare plans based on premiums, copays and out-of-pocket maximums. Don’t focus too heavily on the extra “bells and whistles” you’ve grown accustomed to; those benefits are often the first reduced or eliminated.

For those in a Medicare Advantage PPO that isn’t returning in 2027, the decision is more complicated. Your doctors may not all participate in the same network. Maintaining all your physicians while continuing a no-referral lifestyle may mean moving to a Medicare Supplement combined with a prescription drug plan. The good news is that because you’re losing your current plan, acceptance into a Medicare Supplement is guaranteed.

Don’t Wait to Take Action The biggest takeaway is simple: read your Annual Notice of Change and don’t try to navigate a plan change alone. Medicare Advantage plans vary by county, so work with a licensed Medicare insurance broker who specializes in Orange County rather than relying on a national “1800” Medicare specialist. My agency has three highly qualified, licensed Medicare insurance brokers specializing in Orange County. We’re located in three offices within the same building in San Juan Capistrano, and some brokers can come to you if you’re no longer comfortable driving. I won’t personally be assisting new clients during this enrollment period—I’ll be helping hundreds of my existing clients losing coverage in 2027. However, if you call my office and leave a brief message explaining your situation, I’ll route your information to one of my agency brokers, with the goal of having them return your call within 48 hours. The important thing is to pay attention, understand your options and make sure you have coverage in place for January 1, 2027.
