DINING & ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE + OCTOBER EVENTS

I dedicated my life to coaching college baseball players, nine of whom went on to play for the Big Leagues. After retiring, I realized I missed the spirit of competition. So, at the age of 55, I made the move from coach to athlete. I’ve won 10 international masters tournaments in racquetball, including a gold medal in the Senior Olympics. But my proudest achievement was winning the heart of my wife and fellow racquetball competitor, Betty Rose. We’re so happy to have found a community that encourages us to stay engaged in life, together.

TESTIMONIALS “Our firm is pleased to be a contributor to Sorbet Magazine, which we believe to be a beneficial resource to the senior community. We have been long-time contributors in several other publications the Sorbert’s editor has created and they have always been a pleasure to participate in (Orange Magazine, HB Magazine, Newport Mesa Magazine, South County Magazine, Marmalade Magazine). As estate planning attorneys, we serve the senior community and look forward to meeting many of Sorbet’s readers.” - Genene Dunn, The Law Offices of Donald A. Hunsberger “I have been advertising with Community Publications consistently since the launch of South County Magazine several years ago. The primary reason for this continued investment is the results we get in terms of brand awareness, lead generation, and sales. Another good reason is Community Publications’ outstanding customer service and their sincere desire to contribute their advertiser’s success. My advice is to try them. I’m sure it will be worth it.” - C. Lawrence “Larry” Thomas, Long-term Care Insurance - Insurance 101 “When I was asked if I wanted to be included in Sorbet, I had no hesitation. Working with Jody Robinson over the past few years, I knew she would create another professional, easy to read, and informative magazine that would appeal to seniors. I felt Sorbet would be the perfect fit for me to be able to inform seniors regarding Sleep Apnea treatment alternatives.” - Scott E. West, D.D.S. “Since I began contributing to Sorbet magazine, lots of people have commented to me about my articles and about all the great information in Sorbet in general. From the feedback I have received, I know Sorbet is making a definite impact with Orange County seniors. I have received calls from people looking to sell and wanting to know more about the value of their home so there has been a positive impact on my business from my involvement with Sorbet. The magazine has been a great boost to my real estate marketing efforts and to the OC senior population as well. I look forward to sharing more articles in future issues and helping more seniors with their real estate needs.” - Bruce Ballantine, Evergreen Realty “Simply put, advertising in the magazines produced by Community Publications works. My participation has resulted in new customers and the process couldn’t have been easier. Not only did they offer design services at no charge, they created a great ad without needing much input from me because they took the time to really understand my business. The resulting ad does a great job of getting my ‘message’ out - I’m very pleased.” - Betty Darroch, Mission Wigs

“I placed an ad in the community magazines produced by Community Publications to increase awareness of my product, but I had no idea the impact it would have! I’ve received great response and would definitely recommend these community publications to other local business owners.” - Kathy Crifasi, HipzBag OCTOBER 2016

7 REASONS

Even the most ethical advisors are faced with the dilemma of balancing recommendations that meet your needs, while also being paid appropriately. If your advisor works for another company, he or she may not have the option of recommending the most appropriate product for your situation. Instead, advisors may only be able to offer the products of the company they work for.

WHY INFORMED INVESTORS CHOOSE FIDUCIARIES By Martin J. Lombrano, AIF®, LPL Financial Advisor

INDEPENDENCE

WHEN GIVING ADVICE, YOUR FIDUCIARY WORKS SOLELY FOR YOU.

Knowing that you have a fiduciary working for you should help provide confidence.

EDUCATION

7

YOUR FIDUCIARY FOLLOWS A DUTY OF CARE.

Your fiduciary works for you, educating you on the different aspects of your financial plan and ensuring your understanding of how all the pieces fit together to create a sound plan. Your fiduciary promotes additional confidence in your financial future.

COMPETENCE

FIDUCIARIES ARE HELD TO HIGH STANDARDS WHEN MAKING RECOMMENDATIONS FOR PRODUCTS AND SERVICES.

INTEGRITY

YOUR FIDUCIARY SHOULD PLACE YOUR NEEDS AND OBJECTIVES AT THE FOREFRONT OF ALL PLANNING DECISIONS.

The financial services industry is plagued with highcommission products, company incentives and production contests. Your fiduciary is obligated to provide honest advice, based solely on your situation, and not to be swayed by outside pressures. OCTOBER 2016

YOUR FIDUCIARY’S DUTY TO YOU IS A HIGHLY SCRUTINIZED RELATIONSHIP IN THIS INDUSTRY.

Martin J. Lombrano, AIF®, is a LPL Financial Advisor and PERSONAL FINANCIAL PLANNERTM (PFP) with over 20 years of experience in the financial planning field. Martin has served as the owner and president of his own financial planning firm in Irvine. In 2007, he joined LPL Financial. Martin has extensive experience in insurance, charitable giving, asset management, retirement planning, as well as growth and preservation of retirement assets. He believes listening, trust, persistency and service are the foundation of lasting relationships and success. He can be reached by calling (714) 342-0431 or email martinj.lombrano@lpl.com. CA Insurance License # 0828215.

In addition, prudent fiduciaries will often leverage subject matter experts by tapping an entire industry of knowledge, not just the offerings of one company. This seeks to ensure you receive advice and recommendations.

4

TRUST

Trust, once earned, is one of the highest honor any advisor can receive from a client. One of an advisor’s biggest challenges is telling his or her client what they need to hear... especially when the client does not want to hear it. Your fiduciary is committed to a code of ethics and has an obligation to give you straight answers, providing a strong foundation upon which to build trust.

By keeping you informed of new recommendations, the impact of those recommendations, as well as disclosing all important information associated with those recommendations, a fiduciary helps remove unwanted surprises.

3

COMPETENT FIDUCIARIES CAN IMPART GREATER CONFIDENCE!

However, imparting confidence is not enough to establish the fiduciary role. Only when that confidence is accepted by the client, is the fiduciary relationship established, causing dependence by the client and influence by the advisor.

Working as your fiduciary, your advisor is obligated not to engage in any self-dealing or other conflicts of interest. In fulfilling his or her obligations and duties to you, your fiduciary should perform required due diligence prior to making recommendations. Thus, acting in a proactive manner on your behalf.

2

6

CONFIDENCE

YOUR FIDUCIARY KEEPS YOU INFORMED.

Keeping you informed, as well as disclosing all important information associated with recommendations, helps minimize unwanted surprises, and helps to create the foundation for a healthy collaborative relationship.

THE ORANGE CATHOLIC FOUNDATION OFFERS AN OPPORTUNITY TO LEAVE A LASTING LEGACY

Since its first Wills and Trusts Week in the fall of 2011, the Orange Catholic Foundation (OCF) has had as one of its primary goals to encourage everyone to have an estate plan designed to provide for the needs of their families.

E

ach year in the spring and fall, the OCF works in collaboration with parishes and schools throughout the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange to provide information sessions led by local Catholic estate planning attorneys and financial advisors to help you protect and provide for your loved ones, update or create your estate plan, and learn more about wills, trusts, estate taxes, probate expenses, guardianship of minor children, selection of personal representatives, and more.

• Who should we appoint as our trustees and successor trustees? • Who will be the guardian of my dependent children or child with special needs if something happens to me? The Orange Catholic Foundation warmly welcomes all who are interested in attending one of the upcoming sessions during the week of October 17 through 26. Times and locations for the fall Wills and Trusts Week are listed in their advertisement in this issue of Sorbet.

For convenience, the Foundation offers a series of morning and evening seminars that are scheduled at local parishes across the diocese.

Everyone who attends and completes a basic introductory form will receive a complimentary consultation with both an estate planning attorney and a financial planner within the next six months.

While learning how to effectively plan a legacy, attendees at these sessions receive answers to such questions as:

The Orange Catholic Foundation is a 501(c)(3) charitable corporation and an autonomous pious foundation that exists to serve the Diocese of Orange, including its parishes, schools and overall diocesan mission. The OCF plans and conducts major diocesan fundraising programs including the Proud to be Catholic Pastoral Services Appeal (PSA), the For Christ Forever Capital Campaign, the Conference on Business & Ethics, the annual Wills and Trusts Weeks and other special fundraising events. The Foundation also manages endowments and various charitable funds and grants funds according to the donor’s intent.

• Who will make my healthcare decisions if I am no longer able to act on my own behalf? • Who will have the power to manage our finances if we are no longer able to manage our property or financial affairs? • What is the difference between a will and a trust? • What happens if I pass away without an updated estate plan? • What are the advantages of pre-planning for my funeral expenses? • How can we leave a legacy of faith? Five quality-of-life reasons it makes sense to exercise and eat healthily. By Paul and Carolyn Fetters “You can’t out-exercise a bad diet.” Ask anyone worth their salt who works in fitness and/or nutrition and they’ll tell you it’s the truth.

1. YOU’LL REDUCE YOUR CHANCES OF GETTING DIABETES.

This begs the question: If your goal is to lose weight, can you do so by focusing on your diet only?

Exercise: When you exercise your heart beats a little faster and you breathe a little harder. Your muscles, in turn, use more glucose (the sugar in your bloodstream.) Do this consistently and over time it will lower your blood sugar level which in turn makes the insulin in your body work better.

Yes, you can, but you’ll risk being what’s called “skinnyfat.” Skinny-fat is looking nice and slim with your clothes on, but when you take them off, it’s a different story. Because you don’t exercise regularly, you have little muscle tone, no definition and you look a little soft all around.

Nutrition: According to the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health the following food strategy will help you avoid type 2 diabetes: 1) Choose whole grains and wholegrain products; 2) Skip sugary drinks and choose water; 3) Choose good fats; 4) Limit red meat and avoid processed meat; 5) If you smoke, quit; 6) Moderate your consumption of alcohol.

By exercising you create physical strength, which has a huge impact on the quality of your life; such as, getting up and down off the floor, in and out of your car, and carrying groceries, all these become simpler and you won’t give them a second thought if you have physical strength. The simple truth is that if you want to be in optimum shape and look and feel great, you have to exercise and eat healthily.

2. YOU’LL HAVE HEALTHY BONES - Osteoporosis is a disease in which your bones become weak and brittle. Exercise: Your bones are living tissues that become stronger with exercise. During the third decade of our lives, our bones begin to lose their strength. Regular exercise

But, of course, there are other reasons. Here are five of them and the role exercise and nutrition play... OCTOBER 2016

5. YOU’LL LOOK YOUNGER - Your metabolism starts to slow down in your thirties. Mid-to-late thirties is when some people (not all) first begin wanting to look younger. When you’re happy with how you look you tend to be happier and have more self-confidence.

increases your bone strength and bone density. Exercise also helps us maintain muscle strength, coordination, and balance. This is important because strong muscles help prevent falls and fractures. The best exercises for bone strength are the weight-bearing kind such as weight training, walking, jogging, hiking, tennis and dancing.

Exercise: A 2014 study done by McMaster University in Ontario, Canada came to the conclusion that the best way to look younger is not through anti-aging creams, but through regular exercise. Researchers used a patch of skin on people’s buttock for the study. They found that people who were over 65 and adopted an exercise regimen for three months had skin (in the study area) that resembled those of 20 to 40-year-olds. Dr. Mark Tarnopolsky, who oversaw the study, says “All they had done different was exercise. It is astonishing to consider all of the intricate ways in which exercise changes our bodies.”

Nutrition: There are two key nutrients your body uses to build strong bones: Calcium and Vitamin D. Foods that are known to be good for you bones are dairy products such as eggs, low-fat and non-fat milk, yogurt and cheese; canned sardines and salmon (with bones); tuna; dark, leafy greens, such as kale, arugula, watercress, and collard; broccoli; almond butter; soy beans and nuts.

3. YOU’LL HAVE LESS STRESS - According to the American Medical Association, stress is the basic cause of more than 60% of all human illness and disease!

Nutrition: “Your diet directly affects your day-to-day appearance and plays a significant role in how well you age,” says New York City doctor Joshua Zeichner, MD. If you want to look younger than your years when you get older, here are some of the foods you should focus on: watermelon (it’s high in lycopene which helps stave off sun damage to your skin) ; pomegranates (high in antioxidants that help prevent fine lines, wrinkles and dryness.); blueberries (contain antioxidants that brighten the skin and even out its tone.); lobster (contains zinc which accelerates renewal of your skin cells); kale (high in iron lack of which can cause you skin to look pale); avocado (high in oleic acid which helps moisturize your skin); cantaloupe (contains beta carotene which helps regular skin cells on your scalp and your skin’s outer layer.

Exercise: Physical activity increases your brain’s production of endorphins. Endorphins give you a sense of wellbeing and euphoria. Exercise also improves blood flow and your body’s ability to use oxygen both of which have a direct, positive result on your brain’s well-being. Nutrition: Some foods help stabilize your blood sugar which helps keep you on an even keel when it comes to your emotions. Foods to embrace are green leafy vegetables, wild caught Alaskan Salmon, blueberries, pistachios, dark chocolate, avocado, nuts and seeds, red peppers, and green tea (to name a few.)

It’s been said that when it comes to an overall healthy lifestyle, nutrition is 70% of the puzzle and exercise is 30%. Some put nutrition as high as 80%. Which makes it clear that if you want to sleep better, have less stress in your life, have healthy bones and avoid type 2 diabetes (among other benefits), you need a lifestyle strategy that includes both exercise and nutrition.

4. YOU’LL GET MORE SLEEP - Sleep disorders affect 40% of adults according to research done by Quebec’s Laval University. When you don’t get enough sleep, you could get sick easier as lack of sleep reduces your body’s ability to fight illness; your chances of developing heart disease or having a stroke is increased; your decision making, memory, reasoning, and problem solving suffers; your risk of diabetes increases and your looks suffer. Exercise: An Oregon State University study showed that people who did 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise a week reported a 65-percent improvement in sleep quality. Study participants who exercised found that they felt less drowsy during the day compared to those who were less physically active. Study researcher, Brad Cardinal, professor of exercise science at the university says, “Physical activity may not just be good for the waistline and heart, but it also can help you sleep.

Paul and Carolyn Fetters own three Training Spot Gyms in Orange County. Home to The TakeDown Challenge™, TSpot is located at 16942 Gothard St. in Huntington Beach, a second HB location at 440 Main St., and the newest gym at 1534 Adams Ave. in Costa Mesa. Paul is certified through the State of CA to speak in Nutrition, Fitness and Wellness. He regularly speaks to several Police and City Agencies throughout OC. For more info, please call (714) 8419294 or (714) 374-7448 or visit www.tspot.org

Nutrition: The research is far from definitive but it’s thought that eating some foods before bedtime promotes sleep while eating other food hinders it. Foods you’ll want to avoid before bedtime are alcohol of any kind, coffee, dark chocolate, energy drinks, soda, spicy food, fatty foods, steak, chicken, and grapefruit. OCTOBER 2016

"IRS problems generally affect all aspects of your life,” says Edward Daoud, Ph.D., MBA., EA. An expert who would give them the peace of mind they and their family deserve so they can stop looking over their shoulder once and for all, knowing that they no longer need to meet or communicate with the IRS. Are You Looking for a Medicare Approved Treatment for Sleep Apnea? By Scott E. West, DDS

Are you experiencing Daytime Tiredness, Morning Headaches, Mood Changes or Depression? Do you Snore? These symptoms are indicators of Sleep Apnea.

W

hen you share these symptoms with your physician he most likely will schedule a Sleep Study for you. Your doctor knows that patients with Sleep Apnea have a high potential of developing Heart Disease, Diabetes, Dementia, and Stroke. Why does Sleep Apnea cause so many medical problems? Essentially, Sleep Apnea deprives you of oxygen. Oxygen deprivation puts pressure on your cardiovascular system. This may lead to Diabetes, or Stroke. Deprivation of oxygen to the brain can also lead to Dementia, Depression, and obviously Tiredness. A Sleep Study allows your Doctor to assess the severity of your situation. As we age, the risk for developing Sleep Apnea gets higher. And, why is this? Most of us gain weight as we age. Do you weigh the same as you did at 21?

My practice website is www.CannotUseCPAP.com. There you will learn why the first alternative for treating Sleep Apnea is an Oral Appliance - something similar to a dental retainer that is worn on your teeth while sleeping to prevent Sleep Apnea.

This increased weight tends to close off the airway while sleeping, thus depriving your body of oxygen. Also, as we age, tissues collapse; this again tends to close off the airway. An expression I like to use is “Gravity Sucks.”

If you have symptoms of Heart Disease, Morning Headaches, Snoring, Tiredness, or Depression, you should schedule an appointment with your physician regarding Sleep Apnea. If you have already been diagnosed with Sleep Apnea, and cannot wear the CPAP, call my office today to schedule a FREE CONSULTATION. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain – including a good night’s sleep and better health.

The recommended treatment for Sleep Apnea is the CPAP mask. CPAP stands for Continuous Positive Air Pressure. Air pressure generated by the CPAP keeps the airway open and therefore avoids the negatives of oxygen deprivation. However, I see many seniors who find the CPAP mask too difficult to wear. Despite knowing it’s benefits, I’ll frequently hear from patients, “I just can’t wear it. I know it will help me, but I can’t do it.” That’s where I come in!

My staff can answer any questions you may have regarding Oral Appliance Therapy, schedule your free consultation, and review the use of Medicare or other Insurances.

I am a Diplomate of the Academy of Clinical Sleep Disorder Disciplines. I have worked closely with most of the Sleep Centers and Doctors in Orange County and they have witnessed my high success rate. With over 10 years experience is this field, I have developed a system to determine which dental appliance holds the best odds of successfully treating your Sleep Apnea. OCTOBER 2016

Living with Lymphedema Benefits of Quality Medical Compression Garments

T

he lymphatic system delivers nutrients to body tissues and removes waste products. It operates similarly to the circulatory system but is a separate system. While the circulatory system relies on the heart to pump blood around the body, the lymphatic system relies on routine movement of the muscles and joints to push lymph fluid through the body. If a section of the lymphatic system is blocked or damaged, normal drainage may be slowed or stopped, resulting in swelling or lymphedema. Lymphedema can be complicated to treat, which is why you should see your medical professional for appropriate options as there are many variables, techniques and specialized treatments for lymphedema.

What Else Can You Do About Your Lymphedema? The following recommendations apply only to the area of your body affected by lymphedema.  Keep the affected area very clean.

TREATMENT OPTIONS

 Avoid injuries to the skin that can lead to infection, such as scratches or bites from pets or bites or stings from insects.

The most common procedure for managing lymphedema is called Complex or Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT).

 Avoid other activities that can cause more exten- sive trauma to the delicate lymphatic vessels, such as excessive strain during ex- ercise, restriction of blood and lymph circulation by blood pressure cuffs, tight bra straps, waist bands, etc.

CDT has two phases: phase l, reduction and phase ll, maintenance, each consisting of four elements. All the elements have specific contributions and can only be effective if applied together. The four elements of CDT are:  Skin Care

 Avoid temperature ex- tremes that can stress the lymphatic system.

 Manual lymph drainage (MLD)  Compression therapy

The word “lymphedema” means swelling (edema) that results from the pooling of too much lymph fluid in areas of the body. This swelling occurs most often in the arms and legs, but it can also affect the face, neck, abdomen, or genitals. It is estimated that 5 million Americans suf- fer from lymphedema – resulting from cancer treatment - or other risk factors, in- cluding genetics, being overweight or obese and other health problems like heart or circulation issues.

 Exercise therapy Short stretch bandaging is used in the reduction phase. Once the swelling is reduced and stabilized, the limb can then be fitted for a special compression garment, such as the FarrowWrap® OTS Arm for extremity edema/ lymphedema and the FarrowWrap® 4000 compression leg piece. These garments will help control your condition.

GOT MEDICARE? BUT DON’T WANT TO FEEL LIKE YOU’RE BEING SOLD? By Denice Merrill

In my previous editorial, I talked about why someone might want to have a relationship with their own Medicare Insurance Broker. Get your list of medications handy, list of doctors that are important to you, give us a call or attend one of our upcoming events for a group setting. Do this soon. The Medicare Season is a very busy time. One way is to come to one of our meetings or events. Another is as a referral from a friend that has had a good experience with a local broker. Remember, all agents are not brokers, which means they may only be representing one company and not allowed to offer others. If the agent is not a broker, you will not be able to compare plans from different carriers/companies, which is important specifically when it comes to different costs on medications. Medication costs vary from company to company, and year to year.

I

remember something I read a long time ago about surrounding yourself with a team of people that you trust. Like having a CPA that you can count on to advise you through all those tax laws. Or a Financial Advisor that can help you understand where to invest your savings. Choosing a doctor that listens to you and actually has eye contact. I could keep going. But, think about it, this is the team YOU have chosen to trust. Are you missing someone to complete your trusted team?

Come to one of our upcoming Medicare Events - Come to Learn, not be SOLD!

Sometimes family members try their best to help in this Medicare analysis…You know just the medication review alone can be daunting! Mistakes can be made, and you are locked into your choice for another year.

So, if we can specialize in our field of expertise, in this case Medicare Insurance Options. Offer not just one company, but multiple companies. Teach you about Medicare, what to look for, what the differences are from each company, then we have done our job. Helped to educate you without you feeling like there is something hidden, or that you are being "sold".

This is the time of year to review and make the appropriate changes for 2017.

MEDICARE PLANS

(OPEN ENROLLMENT OCT 15TH-DEC 7TH)

Do you have someone that helps you narrow down options so you can make your own decision? Review your list of medications to make sure you are covered for the next year? That is what I'd personally be looking for.

Find an Medicare Broker that fits you.

How do you find a Medicare Insurance Broker? I get this question all the time, especially when I've helped someone here in CA and now they are looking to move out of state…I do believe in finding someone that lives in your area that fully understands the local plans, doctors, and hospitals to best guide you.

Our goal is to help you find the solution that works best for you and do so in a caring way that makes you realize that you are not alone.” There are wonderful testimonials from longtime customers on her web site (missionviejowigs. com), but for me, the best testament to Betty’s genuine, caring nature came from a source closer to home. When my mother was diagnosed with lung cancer six years ago, there were so many aspects of what she was facing - including the side effects associated wit chemotherapy treatment – that were out of our control. But my mother’s appearance was something she felt she could dictate. We knew she would lose her hair, but she was determined not to “look like a sick person.” From the moment my mother met Betty, she knew she had found the right place and more importantly, the right person to help her. But rather in such a way that every person who has walked through Owner Betty Darroch’s doors in the 30+ years she has been in operation immediately felt like a member of Darroch’s extended family.

As a professional hair and wig stylist since 1962, Betty began her career at CBS where her résumé reads like a celebrity screenplay starring the coifs of a veritable “who’s who” of Hollywood: Ann Margaret, Carol Lawrence, the Midnight Specials and the Sonny & Cher Show. She went on to work for the Hallelujah Hollywood Show at the MGM Hotel in Las Vegas. Conquer the Checkout Aisle without the Sugary Guilt It seems hard to avoid the shelves of junk and snack foods near the checkout lines anywhere you shop. Gas stations, local hardware shops, clothing stores and others make one last push to make that extra sale of gum, candy, chips and sugary drinks by making them available in the checkout line. Sadly, often these sales end up as added empty calories to your diet.

D

r. Miles Masatsugu, Medical Director with CalOptima, the health insurance provider for thousands of adults (and children) throughout Orange County, has advice for making a healthier store exit:

not only food, but also non-food objects. Having a meal or an emergency snack handy before you shop can protect your wallet as well as your appetite. • COMMIT TO A LIST: Come prepared with a list in hand — and stick to it! According to the Integer Group, ninety percent of shoppers buy unplanned items, even when they have a list. Chances are, if you combine this strategy with using a self-checkout lane and a full stomach, you have a better chance of resisting the sales, promotions and other temptations.

• USE SELF-CHECKOUT LANES: Most retail and grocery outlets now offer self-checkout for added convenience. Fortunately, these aisles don’t often accommodate the same set-up as the junk-riddled lanes. Although selfchecking may take a little more time, the distraction of scanning groceries and lack of sugary temptations can encourage an exit without the extras.

CalOptima is a county organized health system, and provides publicly funded health care coverage for lowincome children, adults, seniors and people with disabilities in Orange County.

Seeking Suspense! By Beverly Blake and Tom Scott The payoff comes when the story is over. We are flooded with a sense of relief, which makes us feel good and safe once again. Perhaps we are all just looking for the same thing—a periodic jolt to the nervous system and a roundabout peek at our innermost fears, all within the comfort of a secure environment.

Y

our heart is pounding, your hands are clenched, and terror permeates your very being. You are scared to death, petrified to look at the screen, read any further or continue to watch the actors on stage - but it does not get any better than this!

To quote Neil Gaiman as to why we love a good ghost story: “Fear is a wonderful thing, in small doses. You ride the ghost train into the darkness, knowing that eventually the doors will open and you will step out into the daylight once again. It’s always reassuring to know that you’re still here, still safe. That nothing strange has happened, not really. It’s good to be a child again, for a little while, and to fear — not governments, not regulations, not infidelities or accountants or distant wars, but ghosts and such things that don’t exist, and even if they do, can do nothing to hurt us.”

Do some people get an endorphin high from being scared? Yes, some researchers do believe that the typical physical reaction to suspenseful movies, books or plays results in the release of opiate endorphins. Addiction to suspense is tied up in biology. That is, the story revs up the body’s sympathetic nervous system, inducing stress and anxiety. In some, the stress is a welcome thrill even if it makes you scream. Speaking of screaming did you know that the term bloodcurdling dates back centuries to medieval times. Recent studies show that extreme horror scenes from plays, books and movies often increase a blood clotting factor in humans! This may be in preparation to stop bleeding in a real crisis.

OCTOBER 2016

Prepare for an endorphin high, get ready for blood curdling screams and keep an aspirin handy to ensure your blood keeps flowing when you come to the Playhouse this October.
