The First AI Credit Card Transaction Has Happened Why Local Business Owners Should Be Paying Attention By Gary Williams

T

echnology has changed the way we pay for things for years. We went from writing checks to swiping credit cards, then to inserting chips, tapping our phones, and paying online with just a few clicks.

Owner Gary Williams

Now another major shift has arrived. Earlier this month, a financial institution in Spain, working with Visa, completed one of the world’s first credit card purchases made by an artificial intelligence (AI) agent on behalf of a customer. The AI wasn’t just making a recommendation—it actually completed the purchase using approved payment credentials and today’s existing payment systems.

PREPARING FOR WHAT’S NEXT

It may sound like science fiction, but it’s very real, and it could change how businesses operate sooner than many people expect.

As AI begins handling purchases, businesses will need to answer some important questions. Who gives the AI permission to buy? What spending limits should it have? How will accounting systems track purchases made by software instead of employees? And how do you maintain strong security and fraud protection?

AI IS BECOMING PART OF THE BUYING PROCESS

These are becoming practical business questions—not future possibilities.

Today, most purchases require someone to research products, compare prices, make a decision, and complete the checkout process.

Many companies still think about payment processing only in terms of rates and monthly fees. Those costs matter, but today’s payment systems are becoming much more than a way to accept credit cards. They’re increasingly connected to accounting software, inventory management, customer platforms, automation tools, and now AI.

With the next generation of AI, much of that work can be handled automatically. Imagine telling an AI assistant to reorder office supplies, purchase inventory from approved vendors, or book business travel within a set budget. Instead of simply offering suggestions, the AI becomes an authorized purchasing assistant that can complete the transaction for you. For business owners, this isn’t just another payment trend. It’s the beginning of software actively participating in everyday commerce. 6

Businesses with modern, flexible payment systems will be better positioned to take advantage of these new capabilities. Those relying on outdated technology may find it harder to keep up as AI becomes a bigger part of daily operations. At Ascension Consulting (A-IMSC), we believe payment strategy is no longer just an accounting issue—it’s a business strategy issue.

The first AI-initiated credit card transaction has already happened. While most businesses won’t be using AI to make purchases tomorrow, the direction is clear. Understanding where payment technology is headed today can help your business stay competitive for years to come.

Schedule a No-Cost, No-Obligation Payment Strategy Consultation + Be Entered to Win Two (2) Tickets to Phantom of the Opera at Segerstrom Center for the Arts on August 21st!

The Conversation Nobody Wants to Have By Jay Minor

There is a moment many adult children know all too well. You have been watching your aging parent carefully.

M

aybe it was something small at first — a missed medication, a forgotten appointment, a moment of confusion that seemed to pass quickly. But over time the signs have added up, and somewhere in the back of your mind you know that something needs to change.

And yet the conversation with your parent never happens. Not because you do not care. Quite the opposite. It is precisely because you love your parent so deeply that the words feel impossible. You do not want to cause pain or be seen as the one who took away their independence. And if you are honest, you are also afraid of the pushback — because you already know it is coming. Guilt and fear of conflict are the two most common reasons families delay this conversation. They often arrive together, feeding each other quietly. The guilt whispers that a good son or daughter would never suggest such a thing. The fear imagines the argument that might follow. And so another week passes, then another month, while the situation at home grows more difficult.

FINDING THE COURAGE I recently worked with two daughters who found themselves in exactly this place. The father was in the early stages of dementia, and the family knew their parents needed to move somewhere they could receive support while remaining together. But before any of that could happen, someone had to have the conversation. Both parents were resistant. Like many people of their generation, 8

they carried a deep stigma about being “put in a home.” Their frame of reference was the nursing homes of decades past — institutional, impersonal, and final. Every time the subject came up, it shut down quickly.

by memory loss. In those cases, the adult child may have to make decisions their parent cannot fully participate in. Even then, acting out of love and wisdom is not a betrayal. It is exactly what good caregiving looks like.

As I worked with both daughters to help them prepare, we talked through the safety realities their parents were facing. But knowing something and saying it out loud to a resistant parent are two very different things.

If your family is approaching one of these conversations and you are not sure where to start, I would be glad to help. Sometimes it simply helps to talk through the situation with someone who has walked alongside many families in the same place.

The shift came when we talked about something unexpected — the values their parents had instilled in them growing up. These were women raised to think clearly, make hard decisions, and do what was right even when it was uncomfortable. Their parents had modeled that kind of courage their entire lives.

The courage your parents gave you is exactly what this moment is asking for.

In a very real sense, this moment was asking them to live it out. When they saw it that way — that having this conversation was not a betrayal of their parents but an expression of everything their parents had taught them — something changed. They found their courage and had the conversation that night. They called me afterward to say it went better than they had imagined. Their parents were not thrilled. But they understood the logic, and they recognized the love behind it. The family is moving forward together.

LOVE LOOKS LIKE ACTION Not every conversation goes that smoothly. Sometimes the resistance is deeper, or a parent’s ability to reason has already been affected

More Than Caregiving: A Trusted Resource for Families

By Jody Robinson

When a loved one needs extra help at home, families often find themselves navigating unfamiliar territory. Questions about care, costs and available resources can quickly become overwhelming.

F

or Dwight Brown, owner of Home Helpers Orange Coast, providing answers is just as important as providing care. "About 75 percent of the calls I receive are from people simply looking for information," Brown says. "They're trying to understand their options and figure out where to begin. My goal is to make that process easier." For more than 15 years, Brown has helped Orange County families navigate the practical and emotional realities of aging at home. While Home Helpers is known for compassionate, nonmedical in-

home care, the company also serves as a trusted guide—helping families understand care options, funding sources and benefits they may not realize are available.

Unlocking Valuable Benefits One of the most overlooked resources is financial assistance available through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Many veterans and surviving spouses may qualify for benefits that can help cover the cost of non-medical in-home care, including assistance with bathing, dressing, meal preparation, mobility, medication reminders and companionship. "I can't tell you how many veterans or family members are surprised to learn these benefits exist," Brown says. "When they realize there may be financial assistance available, the relief is immediate." Home Helpers Orange Coast works closely with families to identify potential VA benefits and guide them through the application process, removing much of the confusion during an already stressful time.

Experience Families Can Count On

Owner Dwight Brown 10

Brown's background with leading healthcare organizations, including CareMore and SCAN Health Plan, gives him extensive knowledge of insurance coverage, long-term care policies and private-pay options. That experience helps

families explore every possible avenue for funding care while finding the right support for their loved one. Equally important is the agency's personalized approach to caregiving. Home Helpers maintains one of Orange County's largest caregiver networks, allowing the team to carefully match clients with caregivers whose personalities and experience best fit each family's needs. That commitment has earned lasting trust from local families. "Everyone we have come in contact with has always been professional," says Ann L. of Ladera Ranch. "It was especially nice to see them visit for the holiday. My husband and I really appreciated it." Louis L. of Newport Beach adds, "Home Helpers Orange Coast really works hard to meet our concerns and needs. If a replacement caregiver is needed, the turnaround time is very minimal." For Brown, those relationships define the company's mission. "Caregiving is deeply personal," he says. "When we can provide peace of mind and help someone remain safely at home, that's incredibly rewarding."

It was during this time that she first met Dr. Bunkis, who happened to be a visiting professor. Their connection extended beyond the operating room when Dr. Bunkis introduced her to advanced techniques for repairing cleft lips and palates during a humanitarian medical mission to Guatemala. The experience proved transformative, reinforcing a lifelong commitment to helping patients achieve confidence through reconstructive and aesthetic surgery. Dr. Bunkis, meanwhile, built a distinguished career that has earned him recognition as one of the nation’s most respected plastic surgeons. Known for his meticulous surgical technique and innovative approach, he has long been committed to advancing the field while maintaining a deeply personal connection with his patients. Outside the practice, his dedication to service continues through volunteer work with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department and his role as Honorary Consul for the Republic of Latvia.

EXCELLENCE IN AESTHETIC SURGERY Some partnerships are built in the boardroom. Others are forged over decades of friendship, mutual respect and a shared commitment to excellence.

A

t Orange County Plastic Surgery at CosmetiCare, the collaboration between Dr. Juris Bunkis and Dr. Deborah Ekstrom is rooted in more than surgical expertise—it is the culmination of two remarkable careers that ultimately converged around a common philosophy: helping patients look and feel their very best. Both surgeons grew up far from Southern California. Dr. Bunkis was raised in a mining town in Northern Ontario, Canada, while Dr. Ekstrom grew up on a dairy farm in Minnesota. Those humble beginnings instilled a strong work ethic and a deep appreciation for the importance of caring for people—qualities 12

that continue to define their practice today.

Two Distinguished Careers, One Shared Purpose Their professional journeys followed different paths before eventually intersecting. Dr. Ekstrom initially pursued medical school in Minnesota before completing her plastic surgery fellowship at the University of Massachusetts followed by a hand surgery fellowship in Connecticut. Along the way, a year of psychiatric study gave her a unique perspective on the emotional side of medicine, helping shape the compassionate, patientcentered approach she brings to every consultation.

Years later, a chance reunion at a medical conference rekindled the friendship between the two physicians. What began as a professional reconnection eventually evolved into both a personal and professional partnership. Today, they practice side-by-side in Corona del Mar, combining their complementary talents to provide comprehensive aesthetic and reconstructive care. Their collaboration offers patients a unique advantage. While each surgeon performs a full range of aesthetic procedures independently, they frequently work together on more complex cases, bringing two highly experienced perspectives to the operating room. The result is a thoughtful, collaborative approach that enhances precision, efficiency and patient outcomes. Together, they offer expertise spanning virtually every area of plastic surgery. Dr. Ekstrom specializes in body contouring procedures, including tummy tucks, liposuction, arm and thigh lifts, and breast surgery. She

is also recognized for her advanced fat grafting techniques, which utilize a patient’s own tissue to restore volume and create natural-looking rejuvenation. Dr. Bunkis has earned particular acclaim for facial aesthetic surgery. His specialties include facelifts, neck lifts, brow lifts, eyelid surgery, rhinoplasty, skin resurfacing and facial rejuvenation procedures designed to restore youthful contours while preserving natural expression.

The Art of Facial Rejuvenation Facial rejuvenation today is less about transformation and more about restoration - subtle, strategic and deeply personal. “Today’s patients are increasingly seeking subtle, natural enhancements that help them look as vibrant as they feel,” says Dr. Bunkis. “Our philosophy is to help patients look refreshed and rested, while still unmistakably themselves.” It’s a message that resonates especially strongly with facelift patients who often arrive with the same concern - fear of looking “different,” rather than younger. At Orange County Plastic Surgery, facial rejuvenation often combines

Today’s patients are increasingly seeking subtle, natural enhancements that help them look as vibrant as they feel. surgical artistry with advanced technologies and non-surgical treatments to address volume loss, skin laxity, texture and overall facial harmony. “A facelift repositions and tightens the deeper facial tissues, restores youthful contours and removes sagging skin,” says Dr. Bunkis. “This gives patients a refreshed, rested appearance - closer to the way they looked years earlier.” That distinction is important - by lifting and repositioning deeper layers not just tightening the skin - the face regains definition along the jawline, cheeks and neck where aging is most visible.

Subtle Results, Lasting Confidence One of the most compelling aspects of facelift surgery is its longevity. Results are not fleeting, but they are also not frozen in time. “On average, patients look 10 to 15 years younger after a facelift,” says Dr. Bunkis. “Importantly, the clock does not stop. Patients will continue

to age naturally, but they will always look 10 to 15 years younger than if they had never had the procedure. In other words, the facelift sets the clock back - but it keeps ticking forward at the same pace.” That concept - resetting without pausing - is central to the practice’s approach. Patients are not trying to escape aging, but rather recalibrate it. “This is where artistry matters as much as technique,” says Dr. Ekstrom. Every face ages differently and every plan is tailored accordingly.” Whether through a carefully tailored facelift, fat transfer, eyelid rejuvenation, laser resurfacing, non-surgical refinement or a customized combination of treatments, the goal is never to “create a new face,” but rather to restore confidence by revealing a refreshed version of the person already there. It is this balance of surgical excellence, artistry and genuine compassion that has made their practice a trusted destination for patients throughout Southern California. For Dr. Bunkis and Dr. Ekstrom, every procedure begins with listening, understanding and building trust. The techniques may be advanced and the results transformative, but at the heart of their practice remains something remarkably simple: caring for people. Interested in Looking Your Best?

ONE STOP. ONE TEAM. TWO TRUSTED NAMES. Maaco Manager Patrick

COMPLETE AUTO CARE UNDER ONE ROOF By Jody Robinson

M

ost of us don’t spend much time thinking about auto repair – until we need it. Whether it’s a collision, a strange noise under the hood, or routine maintenance, finding someone you trust can make an already stressful situation a little easier. For Peter Capdevielle, building that trust has been the heart of his work for more than 30 years. “When you love what you do, it shows,” Peter says. “I’ve always loved cars, but what has kept me in this business is helping people. We treat every customer with honesty, respect, and professionalism.” For the past two decades, Peter has owned and operated the Maaco Auto Body & Paint Center in Lake Forest, providing expert collision repairs and complete paint jobs at affordable prices for all makes and models, including motor homes. Last year, he expanded the business by bringing Meineke Car Care to the same location, creating a full-service automotive center where customers can have both collision repairs and mechanical work completed under one roof. “It just makes life easier for people,” he says. “Whether it’s body work after an accident or routine maintenance, 14

our customers don’t have to visit multiple shops.”

KNOWING YOU HAVE A CHOICE One of the biggest surprises Peter shares with new customers has nothing to do with repairing cars. “After an accident, many people assume they have to take their vehicle to the body shop their insurance company recommends,” he says. “What most people don’t realize is they have the legal right to choose any repair shop they want.” That choice can make a significant difference.

ty, many of whom have relied on Peter and his team for years.

NATIONAL BRANDS. LOCAL COMMITMENT. While Maaco and Meineke are nationally recognized brands with decades of experience, Peter believes it’s local ownership that truly sets his business apart. “We’re part of this community,” he says. “Our reputation matters because these are our neighbors.” Every repair is backed by a nationwide warranty, giving customers added confidence wherever they travel. More importantly, Peter says, his experienced team understands that every vehicle represents someone’s daily life, and getting it repaired correctlyr – and as quickly as possibler – matters.

Many insurance-recommended shops operate under agreements with insurance carriers. Peter’s shop doesn’t.

After more than three decades in the automotive industry, Peter says the most rewarding part of the job hasn’t changed.

“Our responsibility is to our customer – not the insurance company,” he explains. “Our job is to repair the vehicle properly and safely while helping our customers navigate the claims process. We advocate for them be-

“It’s seeing customers come back year after year and knowing they trust us enough to recommend us to their family and friends,” he says. “That’s something we never take for granted.”

AFTER DARK: DARK: AFTER THE ART OF OUTDOOR LIVING WITH CENTURION LIGHTING By Jody Robinson

A

s the sun sets over Orange County, a beautifully illuminated home takes on an entirely new personality. Pathways glow with warmth, architectural details emerge from the shadows, and gardens become dramatic outdoor retreats. Great landscape lighting isn't simply about visibility—it's about creating an experience. For more than three decades, Centurion Lighting has been helping Southern California homeowners bring that vision to life. Based locally, the company manufactures premium architectural lighting that is proudly made in the USA, with fixtures cast in solid brass and copper and engineered to withstand the elements while deliver-

ing timeless beauty. Its products are especially well suited for coastal communities, where quality craftsmanship and durable materials make all the difference.

A LEGACY OF QUALITY AND CRAFTSMANSHIP Centurion's story is woven into the growth of Orange County itself. From the early days of Ladera Ranch to luxury homes throughout Newport Coast and Laguna Beach, the company has partnered on countless residential and commercial projects. Its custom lighting can also be found at iconic destinations including Montage, Pendry and Disneyland, show-

casing the versatility and craftsmanship behind every fixture. "Our philosophy has always been simple—listen to the customer first," says Sales Representative Adam Jastrow. "We started in the pool and landscape industry in the mid-'90s, and by understanding what homeowners and contractors needed, we developed products that combine exceptional durability with beautiful design." That commitment extends well beyond manufacturing. Centurion's lighting designers work closely with architects, landscape professionals and homeowners to create customized lighting plans that enhance each property's unique character. One of the company's most valuable services is its nighttime demonstration, allowing clients to experience different lighting techniques before installation. "Seeing your home professionally lit at night before making a final decision is a game changer," Jastrow

says. "Together, we fine-tune every fixture, every beam angle and every focal point until the design feels just right."

DESIGNED TO LAST FOR GENERATIONS The results are both beautiful and practical. Professionally designed

Quality remains at the heart of every Centurion product. Each fixture is engineered to stand up to years of sun, salt air and the elements without sacrificing performance or appearance. Because the company has such confidence in its American-made craftsmanship, every fixture is backed by a lifetime guarantee, along with a 10-year warranty on its Forever Bright LED lamp source—a reflection of more than 30 years of manufacturing excellence. "When homeowners invest in outdoor lighting, they're investing in how they experience their home every evening," says Jastrow. "Our goal is to create something they'll enjoy for decades."

Adam Jastrow, Sales Representative

Because as the sun sets, the right lighting doesn't just illuminate a home. It creates an atmosphere, showcases exceptional architecture and transforms an ordinary evening into something extraordinary.

California Gun Services Helping families navigate the responsibility of firearms left behind

By Jody Robinson

For many seniors, widows, and adult children, the passing of a loved one brings an unexpected discovery layered into an already emotional time: firearms tucked away in closets, safes, nightstands, or garages—often accompanied by more questions than answers.

W

hat do you do with them? Are they legal to keep? Can they be sold, moved, or simply given away? For Jeff McCabe, owner of California Gun Services, these are not abstract questions—they are daily phone calls. “Most people don’t realize how complex California gun laws are until they’re suddenly responsible for a firearm they didn’t expect to have,” he says. “Many times, the firearm belonged to a late husband or father. The family doesn’t want it, but they also don’t know what to do with it.” Those moments reveal a gap between legal complexity and everyday understanding— especially for seniors who may no longer feel comfortable handling firearms, or heirs who want to do the right thing but don’t know where to begin.

WHERE LAW MEETS SENSITIVITY California’s firearm regulations 20

are not only detailed—they are constantly evolving. Even well-meaning actions, like transporting a firearm or attempting to “turn it in,” can inadvertently create legal issues. Beyond the law, there is also the human side: grief, memory, and sometimes hesitation about removing something that once belonged (or currently belongs) to a loved one like a recent case where McCabe assisted a family managing a father in the early stages of dementia. The firearms were legally owned, but the family needed a solution that prioritized safety without causing distress. “These situations require patience and respect,” he says. “It’s not just about removal—it’s about understanding what the family is going through.”

A TRUSTED GUIDE THROUGH A COMPLICATED PROCESS McCabe and his team offer in-home services designed to simplify what can otherwise feel overwhelming. Through California Gun Services, clients receive:

In cases of inheritance, McCabe often works alongside estate attorneys and family members to ensure everything is handled properly and respectfully. San Clemente resident Rhonda Murphy remembers the relief she felt after calling McCabe following her husband’s passing. “I didn’t want to keep the guns, and I wasn’t sure what was legal,” she says. “Jeff came to the house, handled everything professionally, and took the worry off my shoulders. It was one less thing to deal with during a very hard time.”

A SERVICE BUILT ON RESPONSIBILITY For McCabe, the mission is simple: reduce risk, ensure compliance, and bring peace of mind to families navigating a difficult transition. “Firearms can last longer than a lifetime,” he says. “Knowing what you have—and what to do with it—is essential.”

Four Generations Deep:

How South County Pools Keeps Orange County Swimming Smoothly By Jody Robinson

For as long as we’ve lived in South County, our pool has been more than a backyard feature—it’s where weekends unfold, where friends gather, where summer seems to linger just a little longer.

A

nd for several years now, the quiet constant behind that enjoyment has been South County Pools. As a longtime weekly service client, I can say without hesitation that the care of our pool has been exceptional. Yes, the water is always balanced. Yes, the equipment runs smoothly. But what stands out most is the reliability, the communication, and the unmistakable sense that someone genuinely takes pride in the work being done.

A Legacy Built on Family Owned and operated by Sean Kosky, the company has served Orange County for more than a decade— but the family’s roots in the industry stretch back four generations. It began with Sean’s grandfather, Orville, who worked as a pool professional throughout the 1950s, ’60s, and ’70s. That knowledge was passed from father to son, and today the fourth generation remains actively involved.

What started as a family operation has grown into a comprehensive pool company offering residential and commercial construction, weekly pool and spa maintenance, equipment repair and replacement, energyefficient upgrades, and complete remodels. Everything is handled inhouse—a detail that speaks volumes about quality control and consistency.

Service That Shows Up For families like mine, what truly sets this company apart is how they operate. “Our business was built on family values, and that foundation still guides how we operate today,” Sean shares. “We believe the customer always comes first. We show up when we say we will, do the job thoroughly, and communicate honestly with our clients.” As a customer, I see that philosophy play out week after week. Technicians are extensively trained before managing their own routes. The

company uses modern service software that provides real-time updates after each visit, including water chemistry readings and exactly what was added. That level of transparency is reassuring—especially when you’re trusting someone with a significant investment. Sean himself grew up immersed in the industry, gaining handson experience with pool systems, equipment, and customer service from an early age. Over time, that foundation evolved into leading teams, overseeing complex builds and remodels, and upholding the standards set by the generations before him. “A pool is a major investment, and working with a company that truly cares makes all the difference,” he says. “When you focus on doing quality work and building trust, everything else falls into place.” From my perspective, that isn’t just talk. South County Pools has made pool ownership feel effortless. And that peace of mind allows us to simply enjoy it—exactly as it should be.

PROS & CONS OF WOOD VS. ALUMINUM PATIO COVERS & PERGOLAS By Joe Ronstadt, Sr.

I

t’s not unusual for an exterior wood structure such as a Patio Cover to last 30 to 40 years or more if it was constructed using proper exterior framing techniques as opposed to interior framing techniques. That said, many Pergola/Patio Covers were constructed using the latter. Unfortunately, that is why they sometimes develop Dry Rot and Termite problems. We at Blue Knight Construction Orange County, have developed the right techniques. The only maintenance you should expect is to paint the top slats only every eight to 10 years. You can’t beat the look and feel of wood! A Wood Pergola or Patio Cover can easily last 30 to 40 years with very little maintenance and proper weatherproofing techniques. Wood provides a warm authentic ambience that fake wood aluminum just can’t give you. Continuity & Property Value: Your Orange County home is built of wood and has exposed wood

looks like a mobile home or gas station awning. trim and fascia board. A continuation of same or similar materials and textures throughout your home promotes a balanced uniformity and supports high property values. Maintenance and Longevity: Wood Pergola/Patio Covers require periodic painting (top only) every 8-10 years or so and can last about 30 to 40 years. If our unique waterproofing techniques are used, maintenance is greatly reduced. Among other things, such as metal coping on the Headers and Rafters, we prepaint all lumber including saw cuts 2-coats prior to installation, so there’s never a wood on wood connection which will cause water to permeate into the wood.

Unsightly Rivets & Seams.

Conducts and Radiates Heat on to living area below. What About Property Value? Not everyone likes the look and feel of a metal structure in their backyard. A good realtor might advise you not to install an Aluminum Patio Cover or Pergola because it can definitely reduce the market pool of home buyers and therefore reducing your home’s value.

Wood is Cooler: Wood is an insulator and does not radiate heat like Aluminum does. ALUMINUM HAS ITS DRAWBACKS. IT IS NOT FOR EVERYONE. Reduces Home Marketability & Value. Some people say that it

Cefali & Cefali, APC Trusted Accident Attorneys for the Most Serious Injuries By Jody Robinson

It’s a remarkable feeling when you find someone who truly takes your side. Whether in life, love, or even the courtroom—having a trusted partner who believes in you can make all the difference.

F

or attorneys Michael and Courtney Cefali, that partnership began long before law school. The two met years before earning their law degrees—Michael from Chapman University and Courtney from California Western—and their shared drive and devotion have since evolved into a thriving professional collaboration. In 2019, they launched Cefali & Cefali, APC, a San Juan Capistrano-based personal injury law firm built on passion, honesty, and advocacy for the everyday individual.

The Cefalis’ spirit of giving extends beyond the courtroom. Deeply rooted in the San Juan Capistrano community, they actively support organizations such as The Boys and Girls Club of Capistrano Valley (where Courtney serves on the Board of Directors), San Juan Capistrano Friends of the Library (Courtney is also a board member), CREER, the Pacific Marine Mammal Foundation, and Project Coyote. Michael, a proud member of the San Juan Capistrano Rotary Club, has been honored as a Paul Harris Fellow for his service.

From helping clients find top-tier medical specialists to negotiating fair settlements, the Cefalis and their dedicated fivemember team handle every case from start to finish with one goal in mind: the client’s well-being. “The insurance companies would like you to think they get to determine the value of your injuries or your suffering,” says Michael. “We’ll fight for every last penny because we know what our clients deserve.”

At the heart of Cefali & Cefali, APC, is an unshakable belief in doing what’s right—advocating fiercely, communicating openly, and standing shoulder to shoulder with their clients every step of the way. Because when someone truly takes your side—remarkable things can happen.

That fight—and the heart behind it—has earned the firm millions in recoveries each year and something equally valuable: trust. As of this writing, Cefali & Cefali boasts a perfect record of positive client reviews online. Client Jamie shared her experience: “I am so grateful for everything that Mike and his team did for me! He was so responsive, so kind, and it was clear from the start that he genuinely cared about me and my case. He’s not only a great lawyer but a great person—and that made all the difference. I’ve already recommended him to all of my friends.” Another client, Carrie, echoed that sentiment after she and her husband were injured in a freeway accident: “We felt bad about calling a lawyer, but after months of pain and medical treatment, a friend recommended Michael. From the beginning, he lived up to his core values of integrity, loyalty, and advocacy. He treated us like family and worked tirelessly to get us the outcome we deserved. We don’t trust many people—but we trust Michael and his team completely.” That combination of empathy, accessibility, and relentless advocacy defines the firm’s culture. “We craft each case personally, build every one for trial, and stay accessible to our clients,” says Michael. “Personal injury attorneys get a bad rap, but we’re really the good guys. I like to think of our firm as a pirate ship—nimble, clever, and tenacious. We pry money from greedy insurance companies and give it back to the people who deserve it.” 26

ROBERT CRAY For more than four decades, Robert Cray has quietly shaped the sound of modern blues, weaving together soulful vocals, expressive guitar work, and songs that linger long after the final note. A five-time Grammy Award winner whose career has crossed paths with legends including Eric Clapton, B.B. King, and John Lee Hooker, Cray has never relied on flash or nostalgia. Instead, his music speaks with honesty and restraint, drawing listeners into stories of love, loss, resilience, and redemption. His unmistakable style bridges blues, soul, R&B, and rock, creating a sound that feels both timeless and unmistakably his own. As audiences continue to discover—and rediscover—his remarkable catalog, Robert Cray remains as relevant today as he was when his breakthrough albums first introduced him to the world. Whether performing for longtime fans who have followed every chapter of his career or for a new generation experiencing his music for the first time, Cray brings an authenticity that transcends trends. His upcoming appearance offers more than an evening of exceptional musicianship; it’s an opportunity to experience one of America’s most respected artists, whose enduring passion for the blues continues to inspire audiences around the globe.

AUGUST 27th

MASON JENNINGS Some artists command attention with volume. Mason Jennings earns it with honesty. For nearly three decades, the acclaimed singer-songwriter has built a loyal following through heartfelt lyrics, understated melodies and an unmistakable authenticity. Armed with an acoustic guitar and a voice that feels both weathered and welcoming, Jennings creates songs that invite listeners to slow down, reflect and find themselves somewhere between the verses. Born in Hawaii, raised in Pittsburgh and shaped by the Minneapolis music scene, Jennings has crafted a remarkable body of work exploring love, loss, hope and resilience. His music has resonated with audiences across generations, proving that the quietest voices often leave the deepest impression. Whether you’re a longtime fan or discovering him for the first time, a Mason Jennings performance feels less like a concert and more like an intimate conversation that lingers long after the final song.  33157 Camino Capistrano | San Juan Capistrano  www.TheCoachHouse.com

Weekend Worthy Live Music Lineup at Brio Tuscany Grille By Jody Robinson There are restaurants you visit for the food – and then there are places that make you want to linger, glass in hand, conversation flowing, the soundtrack of the evening just right. In Dana Point, Brio Tuscan Grille has quietly become one of those destinations. The Italian-inspired fare draws you in, but lately it’s the live entertainment that keeps you there a little longer on a Friday or Saturday evening out.

There’s warmth in Brio’s service and décor, and now warmth in its soundscape too. Pacific Point Elevates the Coastal Dining Experience By Jody Robinson One of my favorite parts of any resort getaway is discovering a restaurant that feels like a destination all its own. During a recent visit to the stunning Park Hyatt Aviara in Carlsbad, I brought along my 19-year-old son as my plus one for dinner at Pacific Point Sushi Lounge. As the two self-appointed sushi and seafood aficionados in our family, we were particularly excited to experience the eatery’s enhanced sushi program. Perched above the coast with sweeping views of the Pacific, Pacific Point has long been known for its relaxed sophistication and fresh California flavors. Now, the restaurant is taking its culinary program to an exciting new level with the arrival of acclaimed chef William Eick and the expansion of its sushi offerings to seven nights a week. Under the leadership of Chef Eick and Sushi Chef Meljohn Sebastian, Pacific Point’s menu embraces Japanese and Asian-inspired cuisine while showcasing the seasonal ingredients Southern California does so well. The result is a dining experience that feels both elevated and approachable, where beautifully crafted sushi and inventive small plates are complemented by ocean breezes and sunset views. 34

ACCLAIMED TALENT MEETS COASTAL CALIFORNIA Chef Eick brings an impressive pedigree to Pacific Point. As the chef-owner of Matsu in Oceanside, he has earned recognition as one of the region’s most respected culinary talents. His arrival further strengthens an already remarkable culinary team at Park Hyatt Aviara, which includes celebrated chef Richard Blais of Ember & Rye, Executive Pastry Chef Sylvain Piffeteau and Executive Sous Chef and Sustainability Leader Jesse Paul, who recently won the Sustainable Carlsbad Business Environmental Stewardship Award, presented by the City of Carlsbad. While Pacific Point’s expanded sushi menu (available in the Sushi Lounge from 5 pm to 9 pm nightly) may be the headline, what truly stands out is the resort’s commitment to creating memorable culinary experiences. Every detail, from the quality of the ingredients to the artistry of the presentation, reflects a dedication to craftsmanship. Our faves? Mine – The Orange Dragon roll felt especially inspired with the vibrant combination of crispy shrimp

tempura and rich chopped salmon, elevated by silky beet-cured salmon and smoky charred beet aioli. The result is a colorful, flavor-packed roll balancing sweetness, earthiness, and ocean-fresh richness. For my son, the buttery A-5 Wagyu draped over a rich lobster-filled roll balanced with tempura asparagus and avocado took center stage. The Kampachi Sashimi delivered a beautifully balanced interplay of clean, buttery yellowtail, sweet pickled persimmon, briny tobiko, and a delicate peach vinaigrette, while smoked kombu oil and nori dust add an elegant umami finish. For South County residents looking for a memorable dining excursion, Pacific Point offers the perfect excuse for a coastal drive south. Whether you’re settling in for fresh sushi at sunset, sharing handcrafted cocktails with friends, or enjoying a weekend escape at Park Hyatt Aviara, the experience captures everything we love about Southern California living – exceptional food, ocean views, and the luxury of slowing down long enough to savor both.

FROM FORGOTTEN TO FOUND:

How The Deal Chest Unlocks the Hidden Value of Everyday Treasures By Jody Robinson

T

here’s a quiet thrill in discovery—the moment when an ordinary-looking object reveals an extraordinary story. For James Fox, owner of The Deal Chest, that moment has shaped a career spent uncovering hidden value and connecting overlooked treasures with collectors who truly appreciate them. The Deal Chest isn’t a trend-driven resale operation. It’s a deeply informed consignment business grounded in market knowledge, patience, and trust. Fox began selling on eBay in 1998, shortly after the platform launched, helping friends and family sell items they didn’t realize had value. What started as a side hustle gradually became a full-time calling. From 2011 through 2020, Fox worked as a full-time eBay consultant and consignment seller, completing more than 60,000 transactions and generating over $3.5 million in revenue for clients.

Knowing Where Something Belongs While eBay remains a powerful global marketplace, Fox is quick to point

out that it’s not always the best fit. “The goal is always to choose the selling method that maximizes value and convenience for the client,” he explains. Depending on the item, that might mean a specialty auction, a private collector, or a targeted marketplace. Knowing where something should be sold is often just as important as knowing what it’s worth.

A Lifelong Immersion in Collectibles Fox’s fascination with collectibles began in the late 1970s at sports card trade shows, long before the hobby went mainstream. He later earned a degree in Business Management from California State University, Fullerton, laying the groundwork for a sustainable business. From 1987 to 1996, he operated booths at trade shows buying and selling sports cards and memorabilia, sharpening both his instincts and his eye. Over the decades, Fox’s expertise has expanded across a wide range of

categories: sports memorabilia, rare coins, toys, vintage costume jewelry, clothing and accessories, vinyl records, watches, collectible books and magazines, vintage glassware, automotive collectibles, and more. Hundreds of estate auctions and years of tracking market trends have shaped his measured, informed approach. Another defining chapter came during Fox’s 20 years as a sales representative in the moving industry. Time and again, he watched homeowners discard or donate items worth significant money. The experience reinforced the value and importance of taking a second look before letting things go.

Making the Process Simple What truly sets The Deal Chest apart is Fox’s ability to demystify selling. Many people don’t know what items are valuable, and that’s perfectly normal. Fox makes the process transparent and approachable, often surprising clients with what their “clutter” is really worth. He’s sold everything from everyday nostalgia to rare, oneof-a-kind pieces, giving each item the same level of research, care and presentation. In a world where selling online is often oversimplified, Fox offers a timely reminder: maximizing value takes experience. And sometimes, it all starts with a quick call or text—before yesterday’s clutter becomes tomorrow’s missed opportunity.

Walking Together

for Hope By Jody Robinson

T

here are few experiences that touch as many Orange County families as Alzheimer’s disease. Whether it’s a parent repeating stories, a spouse struggling to remember familiar faces, or a grandparent slowly losing pieces of a lifetime of memories, the impact extends far beyond the individual diagnosis. That’s why each fall, thousands of local residents lace up their walking shoes – not just to take a stroll, but to make a difference.

JOIN THE WALK, MAKE AN IMPACT The Alzheimer’s Association’s annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s returns to Orange County this fall to bring together families, caregivers, survivors, businesses and community leaders united by one common goal: a future without Alzheimer’s. Walk to End Alzheimer’s South OC will be held at Sendero Field in Rancho Mission Viejo - September 19, 2026. Registration Opens 9:00 am while Walk to End Alzheimer’s Greater Irvine takes place in Costa Mesa at Orange Coast College - October 3, 2026. Registration Opens 8:00 am. Participation is as meaningful as it is simple. Register as an individual walker, create a team with friends, family or coworkers, become a corporate sponsor, volunteer on walk day, or 38

make a donation in honor or memory of someone affected by the disease. Every dollar raised helps advance Alzheimer’s research while also funding education, caregiver support, advocacy and free local resources for families navigating dementia today. One of the walk’s most powerful traditions is the Promise Garden ceremony, where participants carry colorful flowers representing their personal connection to Alzheimer’s. The sea of purple, yellow, blue and orange blooms serves as a moving reminder that no one faces this disease alone – and that every story matters.

SUPPORTING FAMILIES EVERY STEP OF THE WAY In Orange County alone, thousands of families rely on Alzheimer’s Association programs for support groups, educational workshops, care consultations and a 24/7 helpline. As research continues to make promising advances, community fundraising remains essential to accelerating breakthroughs while ensuring families receive the help they need today. You don’t have to have a personal connection to Alzheimer’s to participate. Many walkers simply believe every family deserves hope. Others return year after year to honor loved ones whose memories continue to inspire each step.

Whether you choose to walk in Costa Mesa or San Clemente, volunteer your time, donate to a participant or encourage a local business to sponsor a team, your involvement sends a powerful message: our community stands together in the fight to end Alzheimer’s. Because while memories may fade, compassion never does – and every step forward brings us closer to a world without this devastating disease.

If you don’t have a wine fridge, just aim for a cool, steady spot away from sunlight and temperature swings— think closet, basement, or even a quiet corner. Avoid the kitchen (it gets too warm) and steer clear of anywhere near a heater or sunny window. Bottom line: Consistency is more important than obsessing over the exact number. If your wine isn’t baking or freezing, you’re doing just fine.

Ask a SOMM A good sommelier is a helper: a guide to finding the best wine for your food and experience. For this month’s installment, we again approached South County-based sommelier Micah Sampson to address a few frequently asked questions. Q Do I really need a wine fridge, or is a regular refrigerator okay? A If you’re just keeping a bottle or

two on hand for pizza night or the occasional celebration, your regular fridge is totally fine for short-term storage. Just don’t let that Sauvignon Blanc get lost behind the takeout for months! For reds, you actually don’t need to keep them in the fridge at all. If you’re drinking them within a few weeks, just stash the bottles in a cool, dark spot—like a closet corner—and they’ll be perfectly happy. No fancy equipment required. But if you’re planning to save bottles for more than a few weeks—especially reds, or anything you want to age—a wine fridge is a worthwhile upgrade. Wine fridges keep bottles at a steady, wine-friendly temperature (usually 50–60°F), with the right humidity and less vibration. Regular fridges are colder (great for milk, not for Merlot) and can dry out corks over time, which isn’t ideal for wine. 40

Bottom line: For casual sipping, your fridge (or closet!) works in a pinch. If you’re building a collection or want your wine to taste its best longterm, a wine fridge is the way to go. Most important? Don’t overthink it— just enjoy your next glass!

Q What’s the ideal temperature to store wine at home? A The sweet spot for storing wine at home is between 50 and 60°F (10–16°C). Reds tend to like a little bit warmer temperatures—anywhere between 55 and 62°F—while whites prefer it a touch cooler, around 45 to 55°F. That’s if you’re planning on serving them almost right away. To make life simple, you can store almost any wine at 52 to 55°F. The reds will just need about 10 to 15 minutes at room temperature to warm up before serving, and the whites might want to spend 10 to 15 minutes in a regular fridge to chill down a bit more.

Q Does wine have to be stored on its side—and why? A If your wine has a cork, storing it

on its side is a classic move—and for good reason. Keeping the bottle sideways helps keep the cork moist, which prevents it from drying out and letting air sneak into the bottle (the sworn enemy of fresh wine).

If the cork dries out, it can shrink and let oxygen in, which speeds up aging and can spoil the wine. A little contact with the wine keeps the cork swollen and airtight. If your wine has a screw cap or synthetic cork, you can store it upright with no worries. Those closures don’t rely on moisture to keep a seal. But if you’re not sure, sideways is always a safe bet. Bottom line: Sideways for corks, upright is fine for screw caps. If you want to impress your friends, just toss out a line about “proper cork hydration”—and you’ll sound like a pro.

Pets of the Month ADOPT You don’t find many dogs more charming than Roamy. While he may look tough, this big guy is just about as sweet and gentle as they come. Roamy seems to get along with dogs of all sizes and would be a great match for younger kids as well. He enjoys fun outdoor activities, but honestly is never happier than when he’s by your side. Roamy is looking for an adopter with a dog-friendly lifestyle where he wouldn’t be left alone too often. Come meet Roamy and you might just find your new best friend.

Two year old Spooky is not as sinister his name suggests. This fun and curious kitty is downright cheerful and loves to spend his days playing with toys and birdwatching. While he might be known for pouncing on a feline friend or two, Spooky gets along best with similarly lively cats. He makes friends with just about everyone he meets and would be a good addition to about any home (haunted or otherwise).

ME

Four year old Boo Boo is on the prowl for just the right home. This sleek panther look-a-like has been diagnosed with FIV (a lifelong cat illness most often found in outdoor cats) but isn’t planning on letting it keep him down. While many cats with FIV can live full and healthy lives with only minor medical care, it is recommended that affected cats live as the only cat in the home or else with another FIV+ cat. Boo Boo has a sweet and quiet demeanor and is hoping for a home where he can finally feel settled. He can be a tad shy initially, but he shows more and more or his endearing personality every day. Could you be the one he’s been searching for?

Happy 60th Anniversary Medicare: 1966 to 2026 By Stephanie Frisch

In July of 1965 the legislation creating Medicare as well as Medicaid (for low-income individuals) passed in Congress and was signed by then President Lyndon B. Johnson.

H

owever, Medicare services took a while to get started. On July 1st, 1966, roughly 19 million individuals aged 65 and older began receiving their Medicare benefits. It took another 6 years for Medicare to be extended to individuals under age 65 who have long-term disabilities or chronic renal disease. That happened under the Nixon administration. Medicare beneficiaries have options on how to receive their Medicare health benefits. Many of my clients use Medicare as their primary insurance (it pays 80% of their expenses to put it in the simplest terms). For someone to be protected from their share of co-insurance (20%) of medical expenses that has no out of pocket maximum, we add a Medicare Supplement plan (usually Plan G) to their coverage. These types of plans, also referred to as Medigap plans, were passed into law by congress in 1980. In 1990 congress began “standardizing” Medicare supplements. Prior to this, insurance carriers could sell Medicare Supplement plans with any benefit they wished, so long as the minimum requirements were met. All carriers now must provide plans with benefits that conform to one of 10 sets of benefits, referred to as standardized Medicare supplement plans. In 1997 the Balanced Budget Act introduced a very impactful addition to the Medicare health insurance offerings. These plans are referred to as Medicare Part C or otherwise known as Medicare Advantage plans. In 1999 private insurance companies 42

This also meant that prescription drug coverage was mandatory, and if a Medicare beneficiary didn’t enroll in “credible coverage” when first eligible, they would start to accrue a lifelong LEP (late enrollment penalty). Beginning in 2007, Medicare beneficiaries with higher incomes had to start paying a higher monthly premium for Medicare Part B and an assessment added on for Part D coverage. This is called IRMAA: Income Related Monthly Adjustment Amount. In 2010 the Affordable Care Act, signed by President Barack Obama, made most preventative care services free for Medicare beneficiaries.

began offering Medicare Advantage plans. These plans are regulated and partially funded by the government through contracts held and reviewed between the two entities annually: The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid services (CMS) and the insurance companies. By 2003 there were over 40 million people enrolled in Medicare. At this time, Medicare prescription drug coverage didn’t exist, and many seniors were paying very high costs for their prescriptions, and some were unable to afford to pay for their prescriptions. Congress then acted on expanding Medicare to cover prescription drug benefits, and Medicare Part D was introduced. On January 1, 2006, Medicare Part D (prescription drug plans) began providing benefits to Medicare beneficiaries

2018 marked the year that all existing Medicare beneficiaries and those new to Medicare started receiving Medicare numbers that were an 11-digit combination of numbers and letters instead of being based on either their or their spouse’s social security number to reduce Medicare fraud and ID theft. The Inflation Reduction Act was signed into law in August of 2022. This is the beginning of several enhancements to Medicare prescription drug coverage. Beginning January of 2025, the amount that people with Medicare Part D coverage will pay annually for prescriptions is capped at a much more reasonable out of pocket amount. There are more enhancements for Medicare Part D and Part B drugs in the coming years. In 2025, there were 67-68 million Medicare beneficiaries. Over their lifetimes, most people get more from Medicare than they paid for, according to analyses by the Urban Institute, a non-partisan think tank. Medicare has evolved and grown quite a bit in the last 60 years don’t you think?

The Courage to Speak: HELPING A LOVED ONE FIND RECOVERY

By Carla DiCandia

W

hen someone you love is struggling with addiction, it’s natural to hope they’ll wake up one morning and decide to get help. Families often wait for “rock bottom,” believing it’s a necessary turning point. After years as a professional interventionist, I can tell you this: rock bottom is not a treatment plan. Hope is. An intervention is not about cornering someone or delivering ultimatums. Done thoughtfully, it’s a carefully planned conversation that replaces fear and frustration with clarity, compassion, and accountability. It’s an opportunity for families to stop reacting to addiction and begin responding with purpose. Over the years, several respected intervention models have emerged, each offering a slightly different path to the same goal—helping someone accept treatment.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT PATH TO RECOVERY The Johnson Model, developed in the 1960s, is the foundation of modern intervention. It brings together family and close friends to lovingly but firmly confront the reality of addiction, encouraging immediate acceptance of treatment. While direct, it is rooted in concern rather than punishment. 44

Every family’s story is The Love First model different. The right inbuilds on that philosotervention depends phy by placing comon the individual’s hispassion at the center tory, mental health, of the process. Famfamily dynamics, and ily members prepare level of risk. That’s why heartfelt letters expressing both love and Carla DiCandia, MPA professional guidance can make all the difconcern, creating an ference—not only in environment where the helping someone enter treatindividual feels supported rather ment, but in preparing the famthan attacked. The message is ily for the recovery journey that simple: we love you too much to follows. let addiction continue. The Invitational Model shifts the focus even further by inviting the person into a conversation instead of surprising them with one. It recognizes that addiction impacts the entire family system and encourages everyone to participate in healing, whether or not the loved one initially chooses treatment. ARISE takes that collaborative approach one step further. It begins with family meetings and gradually increases involvement over time, often avoiding a formal confrontation altogether. This model emphasizes transparency, patience, and sustained family engagement while still maintaining the expectation that treatment is the destination. Although each approach has unique strengths, they all share a common truth: addiction thrives in isolation, while recovery begins with connection.

The most powerful intervention is not a dramatic television moment. It is a family choosing love over fear, action over waiting, and hope over despair. Recovery is possible, and often it begins with one courageous conversation. Since 2012, Ocean View has specialized in stabilizing acute psychiatric symptoms for adults aged 18 and up—always putting choice, privacy and heartfelt care front and center. With 40 voluntary beds—most in private rooms—patients at Ocean View decide when and how they begin their journey to better health.

Capistrano Boxing Gym Building Strength, Confidence, and Community By Jody Robinson When my 19-year-old son came home from college for the summer, he arrived with a new passion: boxing. What started as an interest in the school’s fitness club had grown into a genuine love for the sport, and he was determined not to lose the momentum he’d built. That search led him to Capistrano Boxing Gym in San Juan Capistrano – a place that quickly proved to be about much more than punches and footwork. A welcoming community where teenagers trained alongside retirees and competitive athletes work out beside first-timers, every person who walks through the door seems to be encouraged to become a stronger version of themselves. Founded in 2017 by former U.S. Marine Peter Carey, Capistrano Boxing Gym has evolved into a comprehensive training center built around fitness, character and community. Carey first discovered boxing while serving in the Marine Corps in the late 1990s and credits the sport with teaching him discipline, confidence and resilience. “I quickly fell in love with the sport and the discipline, confidence, and resilience it instilled in me,” Carey says. “After years of training, competing, and coaching, I fulfilled a lifelong dream by opening Capistrano Boxing Gym in 2017.” While boxing remains at the heart of the gym, it’s just one piece of what hap46

pens inside its doors. Members can train in wrestling, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, Muay Thai, boxing fitness, and strength and conditioning, while also taking advantage of personal training, sports performance coaching, recovery and mobility services, and open gym access. The variety allows members to cross-train, build functional strength, and explore different combat sports under one roof, whether they’re preparing for competition or simply looking for an engaging alternative to a traditional gym. The gym welcomes children as young as five, competitive fighters, adults looking to improve their fitness, and active seniors through its Silver Sluggers program. Specialized youth classes focus on developing confidence, discipline, respect, and athleticism, while experienced coaches work closely with members of every age and ability to help them reach individual goals.

BUILDING STRENGTH INSIDE AND OUT “What sets Capistrano Boxing Gym apart is that we’re much more than a place to work out – we’re a community built around purpose, service, and personal growth,” Carey says. That commitment to service is perhaps the gym’s greatest strength. Capistrano Boxing Gym offers a free Veterans Boxing Program that provides fitness, camaraderie, and support for former service members. Its Parkinson’s and MS Boxing Program,

Carey believes everyone belongs, regardless of age, fitness level, or experience. “Our coaches genuinely care about every member,” he says. “Whether your goal is getting fit, learning boxing, competing, or simply

becoming a healthier, more confident version of yourself, all you have to do is take the first step and show up. We’ll take it from there.” In a community that values connection as much as recreation, Capistrano Boxing Gym isn’t simply teaching people how to throw a punch. It’s creating a place where confidence is earned, resilience is built, and friendships are formed – one class, one workout, and one round at a time.

Building Big Dreams, One Playful Adventure at a Time Construction zones are usually off-limits to children – but at Pretend City Children’s Museum this fall, they’re the main attraction. On Sunday, September 27, families are invited to don hard hats and discover a world of imagination during Playraiser: Building Big Dreams, the museum’s first-ever family fundraising event. Designed for children, parents, and grandparents to enjoy together, the afternoon combines hands-on play with a meaningful purpose: supporting early childhood education and healthy development through the power of play. The construction-themed celebration transforms Pretend City into an interactive playground where curiosity takes center stage. Young builders can climb aboard big rigs in the Touch-A-Truck Yard, explore creative Kidstruction Zones, meet special guests, and enjoy food stations, raffles, a silent auction, and plenty of surprises throughout the museum.

“Playraiser: Building Big Dreams brings together everything Pretend City stands for – play, imagination, learning, community, and family connection,” says CEO Ellen Pais. “We’re excited to welcome guests for a fun-filled day that not only creates lasting memories but also helps ensure families have access to the early childhood development resources and experiences they need for their children to thrive.” Every ticket helps support Pretend City’s educational programs, learning spaces, and community initiatives focused on school readiness and whole-child development. It’s a chance for families to enjoy an unforgettable afternoon while investing in opportunities that benefit children throughout Orange County.

The inaugural Playraiser is already drawing strong community support. Snyder Langston serves as the Foreman Presenting Sponsor, joined by Crew Chief Sponsors Sea Pointe Design & Remodel, the Ronald M. Simon Family Foundation, and Superior Grocers. South County Magazine is proud to serve as the event’s Media Sponsor, alongside numerous local businesses and community partners helping bring the day to life. With its blend of interactive experiences, community spirit, and playful learning, Playraiser: Building Big Dreams is laying the foundation for what Pretend City hopes will become a signature annual family tradition. Family Four Packs are available for $250, with individual tickets priced at $75. Sponsorship, underwriting, and donation opportunities are also available for those wishing to support Pretend City’s mission. Be part of Pretend City’s first-ever Playraiser.

CLEARING THE AIR: How Partners4Wellness Is Protecting Orange County Youth

By Jody Robinson

Partners4Wellness is proving that the healthiest communities are built long before illness begins.

T

hrough education, prevention and collaboration, the Orange County nonprofit is helping residents make informed choices while empowering youth, families, schools and community leaders to create environments where tobacco-free living is the norm. Funded by the California Tobacco Prevention Program, Tobacco Free Orange County brings together schools, healthcare providers, local organizations and city leaders to reduce the impact of commercial tobacco use. The initiative promotes smoke-free environments, supports tobacco retail licensing policies, reduces youth access to tobacco products and provides science-based education about nicotine addiction, emerging tobacco products and tobacco industry marketing. "At the heart of our approach is collaboration," says Jennie Arroyo, proj-

ect coordinator. "By working alongside our community partners, we help build environments where making the healthy choice is the easy choice, especially for youth and families."

Empowering the Next Generation Today's tobacco landscape looks very different than it did a decade ago. Bright packaging, sweet flavors and social media marketing have made e-cigarettes and vaping devices especially attractive to young people, while many still mistakenly believe vaping is harmless or that it is safer than smoking cigarettes. "Many e-cigarettes contain nicotine, which can affect adolescent brain development, impact attention and learning, and lead to addiction," Arroyo says. "We want young people and their families to have accurate,

science-based information so they can make informed decisions and avoid developing a lifelong nicotine addiction." That education extends beyond the classroom. Partners4Wellness engages students through its Youth Advisory Committee, where participants receive leadership development, advocacy training and prevention education before becoming ambassadors for tobacco-free lifestyles within their schools and neighborhoods. Because youth are highly influenced by their peers, youth-led prevention efforts can be incredibly powerful.

Creating Healthier Communities Together The organization's work also emphasizes the importance of smoke-free environments—not only to reduce exposure to secondhand smoke, but also to increase awareness of thirdhand smoke, the harmful residue that lingers on clothing, furniture, carpets and other surfaces long after smoking has ended. Partners4Wellness offers free educational presentations, community outreach, youth engagement opportunities and evidence-based resources for schools, healthcare providers, families and community organizations throughout Orange County. Individuals ready to quit tobacco or nicotine products are also connected with trusted cessation services, including Kick It California. Ultimately, the nonprofit believes lasting change happens when everyone has a seat at the table. "Creating healthier communities is a shared responsibility," Arroyo says. "By working together, we can reduce the impact of commercial tobacco and help ensure a healthier future for everyone in Orange County."
