How do We Transition out of Grief?

It occurs to me that the navigation of re-entry that we are all facing has a great deal in common with the re-entry bereaved people face.

W

e are entering a familiar world with familiar places but the way we are experiencing them is altered. We are different, too.

So, what does it look like to transition from the deep sorrow of one place into the space where the sorrow has been more digested, is more manageable and incorporated into our lives?

HOW DO WE TRANSITION OUT OF GRIEF? I believe, when we ask this question, we are really saying – “when can I get back to living?” or “when can I stop being sad?”

Life lesson time: 1. Grieving is part of living.

2. You have permission to stop feeling sad whenever you want to. Being bereaved doesn’t mean you must remain and always be sad.

Being bereaved means you lost something that caused tremendous pain. There is sadness and there is transition and learning to live with the loss.

3. Taking each day at a time is wise and removing guilt or “shoulds” is necessary.

RE-ENTERING THE WORLD AFTER HUGE LOSS For bereaved people, this largely means taking on the monumental task of writing a new narrative while also cherishing the old one. For example, a widow goes out for drinks with girlfriends to a place she previously frequented with her husband – she’s prepared to do this but knows it will be hard. There’s tenderness in those memories and simultaneously there’s a new story waiting and new memories to be made.

But that is true at the end of every day (hopefully), right? We are people with the potential to always change and grow and that is beautiful. We can never be ready for forced change like death – but we can slowly, adapt and still find a way forward.

So, as we open our doors to summer and a season of warmth and leisure, lets collectively bask in the need of this time to be warmed and rested.

We are not done changing, we are not done learning, we are not done living. On this side of resurrection, I’m grateful for all of those truths.

Here’s to stepping out into transition.

This is what a transition out of grief can look like. It’s hopeful, it’s full of movement, and it’s open to change.

COVID has taught us all SO much about change. How instantly change can come, how devastating it can be, and how we can come out of it all into a world we still feel hopeful about.

Will we ever be the same?

No.

The Benefits of Diabetic Socks

he primary purpose of diabetic socks is to keep your feet dry, decrease your risk for foot injury and avoid preventing or slowing blood circulation. The difference between diabetic socks and regular cotton socks is that they are usually are made of materials that wick away moisture, are fitted, padded and are non-binding.

Because people with diabetes are at higher risk of foot injuries and infection due to damage to their circulatory and nervous

systems caused by high blood sugar levels, they would benefit from wearing diabetic socks.

Nerve damage, or neuropathy, decreases sensation and increases risk of injury, particularly on the bottom of the feet and can also cause people with diabetes to be unaware of an injury and delay treatment.

Circulatory problems also make it harder for wounds to heal.

For these reasons and more, proper foot care is critically important for people with diabetes and diabetic socks are designed with these specific issues in mind.

Executive Chef/Partner Rainer Schwarz’ incredibly diverse menu features specialties for every palate, which is perfect for my strictly meat-and-potatoes husband and the inner seafood-ie in me. Dishes are defined by creatively inspired California cuisine simply prepared with a focus on the freshest of ocean fare and flavorful seasonal ingredients. The trick here is in deciding between each of the mouthwatering starters, salads, small plates and entrees.

The pan-fried brussel sprouts enhanced with lemon, balsamic and cranberries are not-to-be missed and it’s equally obvious as to why the thinly sliced yellowtail hamachi with Santa Barbara uni and paired with apple citrus vinaigrette and blood orange is such a popular starter. The carmelized butternut gnocchi with sage brown butter and pork speck was literally melt-in-your mouth rich and delicious.

his past year, I started rereading a collection of classics. As I began working through Jane Austen’s masterpieces, I decided it’d be a lovely and delicious (pun intended) endeavor to apply the same concept to a “collection” of dining experiences worth writing home about.

To be sure, there is no shortage of exceptional establishments in Orange County upon which to embark on such a sojourn. One such standout is Driftwood Kitchen in Laguna Beach the premier waterfront, ocean-to-table dining experience of the freshest and finest seafood, steaks and handshucked oysters, alongside handcraft36

My new favorite meal is Driftwood’s pan seared diver scallops paired with fregola pasta, cauliflower, Moroccan salsa and marcona almonds while my husband was thrilled with his cooked-to-perfection Double R Ranch prime ribeye accompanied by a creamy parsnip puree, green beans, sweet garlic and pickled pearl onion.

It’s easy to call food honest, when it tastes like it comes right off your best friend’s table - but certainly hard to beat when exemplary service and value extend to each inspired detail of the dining experience. Even Jane would agree.

I have tried to stop using the word literally over the past few years, especially in contexts when I may simply be using it to exaggerate or emphasize a strong feeling I have about something.

I am frequently asked by my patients if their diet can impact their urinary system. This is particularly relevant with today’s popular diets such as Keto, Zone, Raw Food, Paleo, Intermittent Fasting and many others.

I

advise my patients that it is best to familiarize yourself with any possible side effects, including ones that can affect your urinary system before you decide if it’s right for you.

For example, the foundation of the Keto diet is adherence to an extremely low-carb, high-fat diet in order to put your body into a metabolic state called ketosis. This process helps your body to be more efficient at burning fat. However, you should be aware of the known effects of having your body go into a metabolic ketosis state. At the onset of the diet, the effect of lowering carbohydrates stimulates the body to burn ketones for energy instead of glucose. Once the body is in ketosis some people may experience headaches, dehydration, 56

irritability, constipation, nausea, and fatigue.

Additionally, there are potential urological problems. High fat intake may be a factor that promotes prostate cancer development. Dehydration puts stress on the kidneys and increases the risk of kidney stones of all types. The high intake of animal proteins makes your urine more acidic and increases uric acid levels.

This combination makes you more susceptible to uric acid kidney stones as well as gout.

The take away message is that there is a potential for unanticipated side effects in most diets. Whether a diet is right for you depends on many factors ranging from your basic me-

tabolism to the presence of many coexisting medical conditions such as kidney disease, high blood pressure, kidney stones and diabetes.
