This “club within a club” is a place specially designed for children from infants to pre-teens with an array of age-specific activities, amenities, fitness, and entertainment. The club’s unique video camera coverage allows parents to “check-in” on their youngsters from monitors conveniently located throughout the club.

ClubSport Aliso Viejo Orange County’s premier resort-style gym

I was chatting with a friend the other day about gyms. He was bemoaning the era of headphones: AirPods, Beats, you name it. I laughed at first because it seemed like such a funny complaint: I don’t like gyms because people wear headphones. But then it dawned on me as he continued to talk, that he was really referring to the missed sense of community he used to get when he went to the gym. Or, as he calls it still - the club. The Club isn’t gone, however. Not by a long shot. That place you could go to achieve your fitness goals or simply be well among a group of other like-minded folks? It still exists, in Aliso Viejo at ClubSport - Orange County’s premier fitness resort-style gym where “you’re more than a member, you’re a member of our family.” And the experience here is even more amazing than ever.

Group fitness classes similar to the ones you may enjoy at boutique studios can be found at ClubSport Aliso Viejo with over 70 weekly instructor-guided class options such as boxing, cycling, Pilates, yoga, Zumba, barre, aquatics, and the increasingly popular HIIT workouts using water rowers, striders, and strength-training equipment. And don’t forget the wide range of court sports including racquetball, squash, and basketball.

If you have no idea where to begin when it comes to your fitness and nutrition goals, ClubSport Aliso Viejo has that covered, too! There is a wide range of options for personal training, an immersive 8-week weight loss program called Rev32, nutritious takehome meals, and accessible advice from on-site professionals that make it easy to stay accountable to yourself.

Should We Still have a Funeral?

even COVID) that can erase the need to gather, reflect and commemorate a life.

The best advice I can give is this: If you want to have a funeral, you should honor that. If you are feeling just the slightest desire to have one, why fight it? I think we try to talk ourselves out of funerals because it takes courage to schedule the day and face what has happened. Psychologically, we know that facing the death is more healthy than harmful.

So many families are asking this question, “Should we still have a funeral?”

COVID made funerals impossible, and the delays kept coming. Funerals were put off and families have been left without a critical tool in the bereavement journey: the funeral day.

It seems that it took COVID to help rouse our funeral-avoidant-culture to the importance of these ceremonial acts. We need them. And I say this not because I work for a funeral home, but because I heartily believe in the power of funerals.

Funerals act as a bridge that transitions newly bereaved families into the world of living with the loss.

So, should you still have the funeral? Yes, I think you should. If you are wanting one, you are in fact needing one.

I want to invite you to think about the funeral you didn’t get to have:

• How many people would you have invited?

Consider the others that would have gathered with you to commemorate. They are with you in still missing your loved one. Holding an event, how many of them would still come? I would guess, quite a few and you would be sweetly surprised.

• What special pieces would you have picked out?

Many people criticize how many decisions there are to be made in planning funerals and yes, there are a lot. But many of these decisions provide opportunities for the expression of love and personality. What color should the casket be? Which pictures should we put out? Which flowers were her favorite? What music did he always listen to?

Answering each of these questions is an opportunity to remember, grieve and showcase the unique life of your loved one.

• What stories would have been shared?

Funerals are prime places for the best stories and memories. Perhaps there are unknown stories out there, things to learn and treasure still about your loved one.

I recently was talking with a friend who attended a delayed funeral for a family member. I asked about how it was or if it felt awkward? “Oh no,” she said, “we didn’t know how much we needed it.”

Time doesn’t diminish this need. There isn’t an excuse big enough (not

The desire you have comes out of an old, deep need to commemorate. We need to take time out of our own lives to remember the meaningful life that is now over

If your loved one has been buried or cremated already, what you are looking for is called a Memorial. We hold these all the time for families

For the instances where burial or cremation has already taken place, families can still hold Memorial ceremonies for their loved ones. These are meaningful, important and good.

Simply call your funeral arranger, “We need to have a memorial for my mom. We weren’t able to before, but now, it’s time.”

I hope that if you are feeling this need, you give yourself the special space of a funeral. I hope you share that space with others who need it. And, I hope you will give your loved one the time their life is so worthy of.

DOHENY BIKE

The Fastest Growing E-Bike Company in Dana Point

You might be surprised to learn what the country’s fastest growing industry is and it’s not RV sales, in spite of a year of lockdown. But the demand to get on the road is certainly fueling the drive toward recreational activities in North America, and e-bikes are running away with the market.

Fueled by demand from both Canada and the U.S., e-bikes are looking at an annual growth rate of close to 11% over the next few years, marching right along with a booming housing market and burgeoning infrastructure development. Targeting not only recent retirees, but enthusiasts of all ages looking to stay

active, get outside or simply prefer to tool around town on an E-bike - the evolved and infinitely more exciting electric iteration of the traditional two-wheeler.

While E-bike purveyors are seemingly on every corner, few have experienced the explosion in interest and growth locally like Doheny Bike - the fastest growing E-bike company in Dana Point.

This is perhaps due in large measure to the popularity, versatility,

utility and affordability of the company’s Fold N’ Go collection - available in a array of colors and profiles. But undoubtedly in equal measure is the mission of its co-owners - Jason Spates and Micah Meiring - to “give back to the community.”

Doheny itself boasts a robust outdoor history. Killer Dana, the aptly named freight-train-thick swell brought in surfers and developers alike. Hoping to keep the community close to the land and sea that brought it prosperity originally seemed logical for Jason, Micah and their team, working with the City of Dana Point recently to hand out 75 complimentary helmets, scooters, and skateboards. “Dana Point is an amazing community, and we want to help more kids enjoy it safely.

Doheny Bike is donating a Doheny EZ Folding bike to Pet Project’s biggest fundraiser of the year on September 19th called Pet Project Foundation: Roaring for Rescues! Proceeds will benefit the animals at the San Clemente-Dana Point Animal Shelter.

“We recognized the opportunity to give back, to contribute to our community that shaped our childhood, and it felt natural to encourage mobility and personal freedom when the pandemic had taken so much of it away.” Jason and Micah are a couple of local Dana Point dads, lucky enough to have lived near the worldfamous Doheny Beach surf spot their entire lives. “Our freedom was nearly unlimited as kids in the 1970’s and 80’s - we wanted our own kids to be as mobile as we were.”

The idea of access and freedom have long been associated with the bicycle, and Doheny Bike believes in

“It should be fun, but we’re also thinking beyond fun to community, individual expression and the ability to remain mobile.”

sending its patrons out on adventures to places unknown, where they might not have ventured before. They set out to provide an affordable solution for everyday mobility.

“With the average buyer’s budget in mind, we wanted a functional riding experience that is not trendy, awkward and limited to your hometown,” says Micah. “Creating the agility of the Fold N’ Go anywhere design, we have provided a solution to buyers that want to travel in a smaller car with electric bikes and ultimately extend their outdoor adventures.”

As parents, Jason and Micah stress the importance of safety, and encourage all riders to be over 16, along with the importance of sizing the bike

out, wearing a helmet, and meeting minimum requirements to ride the bikes safely on the road.

“It should be fun, but we’re also thinking beyond fun, to community, individual expression, and the ability to remain mobile.” On a single charge, you can ride up to 50 miles. Put a basket on the back and you’re ready for the store or farmer’s market. “I wanted something better than traffic in my car and I just knew that the options I had to help my community needed to be affordable and reliable.”

With a background in commercial truck leasing and loans, and an early pandemic ride on his nephew’s electric scooter, genius was born. “There’s something about being out in the fresh air that made a great start to the day.” The recent cycling boom couldn’t agree more.

City of Hope’s Highly Specialized and Compassionate Care Transforms Grateful Patient’s Breast Cancer Journey

Sarah Sanders wasn’t shocked when she was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 41 in September 2015. In fact, she expected it.

That’s because Sanders has a strong family history of the disease on her father’s side. Her paternal grandmother died at age 35 from breast cancer, an aunt passed away at age 50, and another aunt was diagnosed in her 60s and successfully treated. This knowledge made all the difference in Sanders’ approach to her breast health.

Another thing that made all the difference in her breast cancer care was her choice of oncologist, Wade Smith, M.D., who specializes in breast cancer treatment at City of Hope Newport Beach Fashion Island. After her tumor was removed, Dr. Smith performed cutting-edge genomic testing that determined chemotherapy wasn’t necessary. Sanders said that when Dr. Smith told her the news, it was the only time she cried.

“Had he not been on top of that, I would've lost my hair, my body

would've gone through hell, and it would have been unnecessary in my case,” Sanders said. “He represents everything City of Hope stands for.”

Sanders also appreciates the environment at City of Hope Newport Beach Fashion Island and the staff, whom she describes as the “best in their field.”

Sanders recognizes how important it is that her tumor was discovered early. Sanders’ family history caught the attention of her OB/ GYN, who referred her for genetic and other testing. Sanders learned that she had the ATM mutation that increased her cancer risk. Then an MRI revealed a small tumor in its early stages, close to her armpit, that may not have been caught with a traditional mammogram. Because of the gene mutation and her family history, Sanders chose to have a double mastectomy.

Recuperating from the procedure was challenging. Pre-diagnosis, Sanders led a take-charge lifestyle. For Sanders, the most “life-changing aspect” of breast cancer was letting someone else take care of her – specifically, her mom, Teri, who basically moved into Sanders’ home to help her.

Between the mastectomy, reconstructive surgery, an infection, and a hysterectomy, Sanders had six surgeries within one year. During this time, she was referred to Jeffrey Weitzel, M.D., a City of Hope clinical geneticist who studies the ATM mutation and took her care “to a level no one else can match.”

“First, it made me aware of other cancer risks I have because of the mutation,” Sanders said. “More important is the peace of mind, knowing my care is with the ‘A’ team. I am with the institution that's going to have the most cutting-edge technology

“More important is the peace of mind, knowing my care is with the ‘A’ team. I am with the institution that’s going to have the most cutting-edge technology and advanced medical science.” - Sarah Sanders

and advanced medical science. City of Hope is the place to be if you are a patient with a genetic mutation.”

Sanders urges people – especially those with a family history of breast cancer – to take advantage of City of Hope’s personalized and highly specialized care.

“There is a massive difference when you are being monitored by a compassionate, technologically advanced cancer center like City of Hope and detecting cancer early,” Sanders said. “I never looked like a cancer patient because I was treated by specialists like Dr. Smith. So that's my battle cry.”

Travel Can Be Tough on Your Legs

Medical compression stockings and socks are a travel essential

Many people travel long distances and have to remain seated for two or three hours or even longer. They might not think much of it, but when movement is constrained, the blood circulation in the legs is restricted. This can contribute to heavy legs, leg pain and swollen feet and ankles.

Prolonged sitting is also a major risk factor for the development of phlebitis and Deep-vein Thrombosis (DVT). Deep-vein Thrombosis involves the formation of blood clots (thrombi) in the deep leg veins during prolonged inactivity. In some cases, blood clots

can migrate to the lungs resulting in a pulmonary embolism.

When seated without moving for a few hours – whether by plane, train or automobile - the risk of DVT could be four times higher and can happen

Tips to reducing the discomfort and risks associated with prolonged inactivity:

• Wear comfortable clothing

• Drink plenty of fluids (avoid alcohol)

• Stand up and stretch several times during travel

• Wear gradient compression legwear

to anyone during travel, regardless of age, weight or lifestyle.

JOBST™ medical compression stockings and socks are a simple and comfortable way to help avoid heavy, tired and achy legs and the swelling of feet and ankles.

Unlike the products available at your local drugstore, JOBST™ medical compression stockings and socks are recommended by physicians for their clinically proven gradient compression benefit. Medical compression products reduce swelling and helps prevent the pooling of fluid in the venous or lymph systems. The stylish cotton blend dress socks and compression hose available today increase tissue pressure to help balance the flow of fluid across the capillaries of the limb.

Pro Grill Cleaning

The Perfect Gift for the Hard-to-Buy-For Men in Your Life

My husband is impossible to buy for. Not that he has everything already. Rather, he’s a bit of a minimalist. So if you’re going to give him a gift, it really has to pack a punch.

It wasn’t until I came across Pro Grill Cleaning’s website that I truly understood that there is a perfect gift for all of the difficult-to-buy-for men in my life.

The benefits of having a professional come over to clean your barbecue? What sold me was knowing how

many times we've grilled on the same caked on grease and grime ... ugh. How many times did we scrape those grates with a “clean” grill brush, counting on the extreme heat of the grill itself to clean between rounds of burgers and dogs?

But there’s clean, and then there’s Very Clean, which is where Pro Grill Cleaning comes in. The service can take upwards of four hours to get your barbecue gleaming again. It’s a really dirty job and not really one my husband relishes and I’m not inclined to spend an afternoon scrubbing our built-in or free rolling grill. And truth be told, we’d never get them as clean - it’s a job best left to the professionals.

BBQ cleaning can prolong the life of your grill, give you a cleaner and more hygienic experience grilling, and protect your investment.

The team at Pro Grill will take on any level of mess, and they recommend doing a cleaning at least once a year. Offering variable maintenance plans, you can sign up for a monthly, quarterly, or bi-quarterly service - it just depends on how often you use your grill.

"Barbeques are expensive. If they aren’t maintained, they’ll more easily break down, or corrode and rust," says Owner Daniel Lewis. "BBQ cleaning can prolong the life of your grill, give you a cleaner and more hygienic experience grilling, and protect your investment.” Now, who wouldn’t want that for a gift?

Searching for Shoreline An Ocean of Superior Dental Care along the California Coast

There are roughly 33,200,000 results for “dentists in Orange County” on Google: and yet, there are only about 3 million residents of the county.

Far too many choices when it comes to keeping your dental hygiene in order. Better perhaps, to narrow the search. Welltrained, hospitable, effective, remarkable, full-service, healthy: just some of the keywords I’d use to find the best dentist for myself and my family. Shoreline Dental Studio has it all.

Treating the gamut of dental needs, Dr. Kristen Ritzau, DDS and her team have been working in Orange County for the past eight-and-a-half years, serving over 3,500 patients to date. Helping every client achieve their personal dental goals might sound like a feel-good series of SEO keywords, but Dr. Ritzau and her team are very serious when it comes to creating the most holistic, healthy, longlasting results possible.

“I founded the original Shoreline Dental location in San Clemente in December 2012, hoping to focus on preventative care and family dentistry," she says. "Since then, we’ve

grown from just myself, my husband, and one dental assistant to a team of almost 30 remarkable employees between our two offices.”

On top of being one of the number one Invisalign providers in Orange County, the team at Shoreline Dental Studio prides themselves on the laundry list of services patients can

choose from: total smile makeovers to full mouth reconstruction. Sedation, cosmetics, tooth replacement, oral appliances and more, the burgeoning teams work hard to assess each individual's concerns regarding treatment. During your first visit, you’ll create an effective treatment plan that meets your personal requirements, “even staggering or

prioritizing your treatments to give you the smile you need in a timeframe you can afford.”

"It's a friendly, welcoming environment," says patient Rhonda H. "They addressed the issue I had come in for and didn't try to upsell me on any unnecessary treatments ... I actually found a dentist's office that I like!"

Another client, Becca B. echoes Rhonda's statement and adds "Best dental experience ever! Everyone is so sweet, caring, knowledgeable and confident. I was super nervous about going to the dentist after not having gone for awhile, but as soon as I stepped into the studio, I knew I was in good, loving hands and had nothing to worry about."

A third-generation resident of San Clemente, Dr. Ritzau believes what sets Shoreline apart (besides the incredible service, friendly staff, and beautiful offices) is that “there is a good chance our patients are family, friends, past teachers, coaches, or even neighbors of mine. Making decisions about health care is incredibly personal: by understanding this, by working in my hometown, we can create the ultimate patient experience for any single person who comes to our office. Period.”

Breath new life into your daily routine.

Now is the perfect moment to carve out time for yourself whether it’s a yoga or boot camp class, lifting weights, running on the treadmill, or treating yourself to a massage and lunch on our patio. Health, Wellness, Longevity... The proven results of Infrared Saunas

Can you feel the crisp in the air? We’re not used to the cold in Southern California, so when the chills start to settle in, we swap the A/C for the heater. But there is a heating alternative that you’ve probably never heard of; and with it comes a wealth of health benefits.

JNH Lifestyles infrared saunas are a modern home technology that uses infrared heaters to increase your body temperature. These saunas provide comfortable, ambient temperatures while gently warming the body from the inside out using infrared technology. Warmth is just a bonus; the health benefits are the bread and butter! Backed by extensive research conducted by scientists around the globe, infrared saunas have a myriad of health benefits! Let’s dive deeper into some customer-favorite benefits:

REDUCE CARDIOVASCULAR RISK

Infrared saunas demand more of your cardiovascular system by increasing your body temperature, which elevates your heart rate up to 120-150 beats per minute; mimicking low to moderate-intensity physical exercise in the circulatory system.

In addition, infrared therapy has been proven to reduce levels of LDL (bad cholesterol) and triglycerides, but increase levels of HDL (good cholesterol). LDL and triglycerides are involved in the onset of cardiovascular diseases, such as coronary heart disease and strokes; higher levels of HDL offer protection against said diseases.

Let’s not forget to mention that high blood pressure is reduced during each sauna session too! As your body releases a chemical called nitric oxide, which is a potent vasodilator (relaxes the muscle in your artery walls), you experience a healthy drop in blood pressure.

Studies also showed that after using infrared saunas, patients had higher levels of endorphins. These chemi-

cals produced in the brain improve your mood and reduce stress, which is tightly linked with high blood pressure and overall heart health.

IMPROVE SKIN HEALTH

As much as we’d all love to turn back time and have our youthful skin, it’s just not in the cards. Still, when infrared waves interact with skin and connective tissue, it stimulates collagen synthesis, and elastin and (most importantly) enhances wound healing. Infrared saunas have also been used to assist in treating eczema and psoriasis lesions due to their ability to reduce inflammation. This is accomplished because infrared waves can inhibit the synthesis and release of pro-inflammatory cytokines, which are associated with flare-ups.

MANAGE CHRONIC PAIN

At some point in our lives, we all suffer from a form of chronic pain. Joint pain is a common type, especially in people over the age of 40. Unfortunately, it’s usually treated with an over-the-counter or prescribed pain

medication, but there are other natural forms of relief.

Did you know athletes and even average individuals have used infrared saunas to prevent and/or relieve pain? Sauna sessions stimulate the body’s natural healing power and processes that promote muscle repair and adaptation. It enables nitric oxide (NO) release, a potent vasodilator that increases lymphatic drainage from the injury site.

This helps minimize swelling and, as a result, relieves pain. Another 2009 study reported that infrared saunas can help regulate the inflammatory nature of rheumatoid arthritis and reduce pain and stiffness after just one session.

In a more recent 2019 study, researchers exposed patients with knee osteoarthritis to infrared waves three times per week for 12 weeks. At the end of the study, these patients had a significant reduction in pain, an improvement in functional activities, and an increase in overall quality of life.

SUPPORT THE IMMUNE SYSTEM

As a health-conscious person, you’ve probably taken steps to improve your immune system with supplements, drinks, a healthy diet and exercise. But did you know an infrared sauna has been associated with an improved function in weakened immune systems?

A study in 2015 compared white blood cell profiles before and after a sauna session. The study found an increase in all types of white blood cells, including lymphocytes, which are the most critical cells in the immune system. Moreover, our bodies naturally release heat shock proteins during sauna sessions. Heat shock proteins are known for helping the immune system fight off viruses that cause the common cold and the flu. No wonder using an infrared sauna regularly is an excellent way for active adults to avoid getting sick.

IMPROVE BLOOD CIRCULATION

Experiencing tingling and numbness (AKA pins & needles) in your limbs can be a frightening experience. These symptoms are typically associated with circulation problems. Infrared saunas can help blood flow throughout your body due to all the changes they elicit in the circulatory system.

By increasing your body temperature, infrared waves increase blood flow, heart rate and vasodilation. This causes your blood vessels to become more pliable, improving blood flow and oxygen throughout.

In light of all the research around infrared saunas, it is recommended that you consult your doctor before trying any new regimen, as individual results may vary. Once you’re given the green light from your physician, visit jnhlifestyles.com to shop for affordable home infrared saunas or call (949) 979-6034. At JNH Lifestyles, their mission is simple - better health leads to a better life, and that’s their hope for you.

The Massage Associates

Celebrating 20 Years in South OC!

There is a beautiful book on writing penned by Haruki Murakami called “What I Talk About When I Talk About Running.” From the title, you’d think it was a book on running.

And it is. But it is also a deep meditation on the act of getting a pure thought on paper, and the intersectional discipline it takes to be good at both: running, and writing. The truly standout feature of the book is its seamlessness. Learning and absorbing without noticing it happen. Michelle Bryant, owner of The Massage Associates in San Juan Capistrano, knows a thing or

two about getting results without her clients seeing the process.

Born and raised in Southern California, Michelle got her degree in Biology from UC San Diego, and moved to Orange County when she got married. In February of this year, she celebrated a special event, and if you guessed her wedding anniversary, well, almost. The Massage Associates have been in business since February of 2001, and while the impact of COVID-19 has put a bit of a damper on celebrations, Michelle and team are more dedicated than ever to providing best in class service, inviting new clients into the community, and helping people feel pain free.

At the outset, “there was me, and one other massage therapist,” says Michelle. “Then we added another, and another as our clientele expanded. We now have 6 massage therapists and specialize in deep tissue, therapeutic massage.” But like Murakami talking about writing when he is talking about running, what she means is that they offer massage as a vehicle to developing relationships with their clients that extend well beyond a typical therapist visit. They specialize in community pain management. “It’s the only way to help you feel better if your needs are known we can tailor our massage to fit.”

I would venture to say that the majority of businesses offering massage

also offer a litany of spa treatments: sauna, facials, skincare treatments, etc. But the beauty of Michelle’s service is that they only offer massage. “We want to specialize in one form of treatment, and do it the best we can.” Need a deep tissue focus on your shoulders but some reflexology on your feet? No problem. Hot stone to relax, with a light stretch and some CBD cream for that recurrent sports injury? “We can do that. And we all work together to make sure that even if one time you can’t see your regular therapist, our other therapists can see the detailed notes on what you like or don’t like so that we can take great care of you.”

The relationships they have built help determine the offerings, the order, and the onus to come back. It isn’t some cookie cutter massage. It’s dedicated, deep, and disciplined time spent on your health, and it is available to you even now, during a global pandemic, due to the focus and flexibility of the team in place.

“In 2019 we received designation as a health care service provider business so we were allowed to stay open during these wild days of the COVID crisis," says Michelle. "People are in pain, people are stressed. And we’ve taken all the CDC precautions and made all the modifications to our office so that our clients feel safe, comfortable, and most importantly, so that nothing interrupts our goal of getting you to total health.”

The experience is total: rich, and revelatory. Much like Murakami’s ode to the road he runs, and that which he writes, this 20th year for Michelle and her team bring constant challenges to be met, and yet also reminds us what we have been celebrating all along: the seamless triumph and trial. An end to pain and the work that gets us there.

THE RETIREMENT LIFESTYLE AT Reata Glen EARNS

Best OF ORANGE COUNTY DISTINCTION.

Life behind the gates of OC’s Best Retirement Community

Making strides as a young retirement community and growing fast

Not too long after moving to Reata Glen in 2019 to start an exciting new chapter in life, Katheryn Roberson’s husband, Barry, was diagnosed with cancer. As he started undergoing treatment, Katheryn says the staff at the retirement community in Rancho Mission Viejo rose to the occasion.

“The staff bent over backwards for us, and they’re so supportive,” Katheryn says. “There’s such a sense of family here, and it’s really meaningful.”

Of all the well wishes and encouragement, one of the most unlikely but touching came from a staff member who attended a Los Angeles Kings hockey game. It was a special night at STAPLES Center with a tribute to Hockey Fights Cancer™ where players and fans in the stands had signs saying “I Fight For” followed by the name of someone on each sign.

“Among other reviews and recognitions, to earn Best of Orange County is an extraordinary accomplishment for us in just two years of being open,” says Stephanie Riggs, director of marketing and sales at Reata Glen. “We are different than other senior living options, and there’s a great deal of pride among both residents and staff here.”

Barry, who was going through chemotherapy and radiation, was at home with Katheryn watching that game.

“All of a sudden, I received a photo from someone who works here and she’s at the game, standing with a sign that said she’s fighting for Barry,” Katheryn vividly recalls. “Our eyes swelled up upon seeing it, and it was heartwarming.”

It’s just one example of why the Robersons were not surprised that Reata Glen was recently voted in as the “Best Retirement Community in Orange County 2021” by The Orange County Register.

“I went to every senior community in south Orange County to compare when I was looking to make a move,” says resident Kathy Allen, who chose to call Reata Glen home in 2019. “I’m pretty athletic and outgoing, and I wanted socialization. Reata Glen is the future of how my generation acts – we aren’t sitting at home alone feeling sorry for ourselves – we want to be active, healthy and going places. I see Reata Glen as a hybrid between a university, cruise ship and country club.”

Without the burdens of home maintenance and cooking everyday as Kathy enjoys the multiple dining venues at Reata Glen, she now has the freedom and time to get involved in what she really cares about.

We want to be active, healthy and going places.

TO EARN BEST OF ORANGE COUNTY IN JUST TWO YEARS OF BEING OPEN IS AN extraordinary ACCOMPLISHMENT FOR US.

Physical attributes, amenities and an abundance of activities stand out

“You could be busier here than you’ve ever been in your life,” Kathy says with a smile. “More than I ever had been before.”

With a fitness center, indoor pool, pickleball and tennis courts, woodshop, and activity rooms for educational, fine arts and fun classes, residents’ calendars are often full.

“They go full bore for parties and events here, and there’s excellent food, too,” notes Katheryn. “I also walk a lot, go to the gym for a class called crash cardio and also write for the monthly newsletter.”

It’s not just enjoying the activities and amenities on the Reata Glen campus, it’s the people you experience them with.

“In the beginning, I didn’t know anyone,” Kathy says. “Now, it’s like being part of an extended family. I love being surrounded by people and friends and not having that alone feeling.”

Intangibles and culture make the difference

“As much as I love my coworkers, I love residents more,” says Karter Farris, who started as a dining server at Reata Glen, then transitioned to EMT safety officer after schooling. “To win Best of Orange County makes me very proud.”

Karter’s team oversees security at the community, and she often wears many hats to serve residents’ needs. She’s a resident favorite, and some have labeled her as the happiest, bubbliest person they know.

“The residents always make me smile,” Karter says. “Even if I come in and I’m not in the greatest mood, they say one thing and it brightens my day up, and I forget why I was bummed.”

Recognized as a Great Place to Work by the Great Place to Work® Institute, Karter says the variety of job opportunities and the bonds with residents make it a fabulous place to start or continue a career.

“There’s a spirit here – we care for each other,” Kathy says. “It is a community, and you feel connected.”

Residents say they also feel safe – even during the challenging times recently.

“Over and over, we’ve said we can’t imagine being anywhere but here when the pandemic hit,” Katheryn adds. “Management did an excellent job, we had peace of mind, and they made it interesting and fun with little surprises and creativity.”

The Reata Glen experience

It’s no coincidence the word Reata translates to a lasso or loop of rope – a fitting representation of the bonds that connect those who live and work at Reata Glen to each other.

Receive an exclusive invitation to attend a lunch presentation and learn about the Reata Glen experience. You can even meet Katheryn, Kathy or Karter firsthand. Call 1-949-529-3134 to find more.

All in One Fun at the ResortCatamaran Hotel in San Diego's Mission Bay

My husband and I like to joke that we run an after-hours speakeasy out of our home. When the kids are finally asleep for the night and the dishes are all done, we bust out the fancy cheese and crackers, open a bottle of wine, and unfurl the tin foil around a decadent bar of dark chocolate. Of course, we have to hide the evidence from prying eyes, so in the morning we don’t have to answer questions about the chocolate wrapper, wine cork, or ice cream scoop. We laughed at each other the other day while cleaning up the evidence of our adults-only snacktime when we agreed that the best gift we could give each other was a night in a hotel room, so there weren’t any dishes to do, and plenty of activities during the day to keep our ourselves - and our offspringentertained.

San Diego’s Mission Bay happens to be the answer to our giftgiving conundrum, as well as the speakeasy solve: a close-to-home, family friendly travel destination that happens to have everything we need for a getaway after the last chaotic year and a half. Classically beautiful weather year round makes

San Diego one of the country’s most desirable vacation destinations, and with its proximity to Orange County and LA, a quick drive down the coast is as easy as can be. The man-made saltwater bay was created from more than 2,000 acres of wetlands and marshes, and boasts activities ranging like theme parks like Seaworld and an old fashioned roller coaster at Belmont Park to water activities.

Mission Bay’s Catamaran Resort is perched in popular "PB" - what the locals call Pacific Beach, and with gorgeous rooms facing out to the Bay, or over the glittering Pacific, every accommodation offers a beautiful view. Over 1,000 tropical trees and plants adorn the property, making it a proper urban jungle hideaway: koi ponds included. The resort's tropical vibe artfully blends with the Aloha spirit where each of the property’s 310 luxurious suites, studios and hotel rooms feature a private balcony or patio with breathtaking views of Mission Bay, the Pacific Beach neighborhood and coastline, or the property’s lush tropical gardens.

A Polynesian-themed resort wouldn’t be complete without the aforementioned robust list of water based activities, and the Catamaran certainly comes through. If Mom or Dad are feeling the fitness center or on-site spa, options include facials and massages, marine and botanical-

based products to take home and luxuriate in, or a full range of stateof-the-art exercise equipment to fuel your day. Various watersports abound on property, with the waters of the bay beckoning beyond (think boat rentals, kayaking, stand up paddleboarding and more via actionsportrentals.com/ catamaran-resort-hotel-spa located right at the resort's water's edge). Prefer

land activiites? One of the best ways in which to enjoy San Diego's premier land and sea resort destination? Simply basking bayside in a covered lounge.

Our family opted for a lovely, leisurely late afternoon tooling around the bay aboard a pair of funcats - chaiselounge style electric catamaran boats, followed by an equally equisite dining experience at the resort's signature restaurant, Oceana Coastal Kitchen. There was something for every palate on the menu - abundant seafood selections for me, beef and chicken entrees for my meat-and-potatoes husband and a variety of kid-friendly faves including delicious flatbreadsthe sweet fennel sausage and classic pepperoni was a big hit!

A beach concierge can set the family up with umbrellas, towels, and chairs, or simply spend the day poolside: surrounded by the resort’s towering palm trees. The best part about all of it being (of course) that you don’t have to hide the candy wrappers at the end of the night, because the whole family gets to escape at the same time. CATAMARAN

AEP- It’s About Saving You Money

Calling all existing Medicare Beneficiaries, are you looking to save some money on either your monthly premiums, your co-pays, or your prescription drug copays?

The biggest way to save money is to see if a Medicare Advantage plan would work for you. If it does meet your needs, then you cancel your Medicare Supplement and Medicare Drug plan for 2022 because the Medicare Advantage plan gives you that type of coverage and financial protection from medical bills. You’re no longer paying a premium for Medicare Supplement or a Medicare RX plan if you decide to enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan. These plans in Orange County typically have no premium.

In regards to a “standalone” Medicare RX plan, some plans used to not have a name brand drug deductible and now they do. Have your prescriptions changed since you enrolled in your current Medicare RX plan? If they’re expensive medications (in the $40-$100 range when you fill them) then it’s time for a review. (FYI, Type 1 diabetics: there are Medicare Advantage plans that cover insulin at a $0 co-pay now, for the entire year!) The Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (aka AEP) ends December 7th, if you’d like to schedule a no cost Medicare options review contact me soon, my calendar is filling up!

It’s Not Epoxy, It’s SpartaFlex!

For nearly 40 years, southern California homeowners have used Epoxy for garage and industrial floor coating projects despite its tendency to yellow, it’s soft and easy to scratch surface and it’s tendency to be permanently damaged by the hot, high performance tires found on most cars in the OC area.

Today OC homeowners don’t have to settle for Epoxy and all of its flaws anymore. SpartaFlex is an advanced, next generation 100% solids polyaspartic floor coating that gives your garage a beautiful finish that is 3x harder than epoxy, resists yellowing while also resisting permanent damage from hot tires. Perhaps best of all, SpartaFlex comes with a much better warranty than Epoxy.

Perkins Custom Coatings has been installing SpartaFlex on OC garage floors for nearly 12 years and has completed over 8,000 floors during that period of time. Its CEO and owner, Paul Frankel is considered by many to be the most knowledgeable contractor in the local market. “Unlike many of our competitors, we strive to do an onsite assessment including a moisture test for every floor coating project we install and instead of using the ‘one size fits all’ approach, we develop a coating solution that we believe will last for decades not just for a few years.”

Perkins uses only the most advanced surface preparation methods available and will either diamond grind or shot blast every floor that he installs. Old, failing, yellowed ep-

oxy coatings can also be removed during this same process. “Despite the fact that Coatings Industry requires concrete to at least be diamond ground before installing a new coating system, many of my competitors will install their coatings right over raw or pressure washed concrete just to save a few bucks - I will never do that” says Paul.

Perkins also is known for its professional and unique approach to repairing concrete cracks. “Anyone can slap some crack repair paste to cosmetically fix a crack” says Paul. A year later, when the concrete moves again and damages their brand new floor coating, the devastated homeowner will learn that this damage is not covered by the typical Epoxy warranty. “We are the only company that I know of that uses a ‘structural crack repair’ technique to fix cracks. The process is so effective we can offer our customers a warranty that can cover future damage from cracks!” says Paul.

After the surface prep is completed, a very effective moisture control primer is applied to the concrete. “This is extremely important” says Paul because for many homes built in Socal before 2005, elevated moisture vapor levels in the garage concrete can have a detrimental impact on floor coatings. Paul does a fast and non-destructive moisture test for every one of the pre-2005 homes he visits and develops a unique installation plan for each home. For newer homes, Paul and his crew can use a basic primer that dries a bit faster allowing installation of a garage floor in as little as one day!

The color chips that give the Perkins floor its legendary appearance are sandwiched between this primer and finish coat. Perkins carries the widest selection of colors and sizes in the market and uses a ‘full chip broadcast’, not a partial sprinkling of chips like many of its competitors. “The full chip broadcast gives the floor a consistent appearance and makes the floor much more durable and helps hide dirt better than the partial broadcast finish” says Paul.

Finally, Perkins installs the SpartaFlex polyaspartic finish coat and the finished garage comes to life. “Epoxy & SpartaFlex floor coatings are virtually identical in appearance when they are first installed” says Paul. “However, when you will really begin to appreciate your SpartaFlex floor is a few months down the road when you start to see problems develop with your Epoxy floor. If there was a better material on the market, I would be selling it, but there isn’t and that is why we love selling SpartaFlex.”

For more information or to see for yourself the advantages of SpartaFlex over Epoxy, you can call Perkins Custom Coatings, at 866-330-1DAY (1329) or visit their informative website at www.perkinscustomcoatings.com.

Surf City’s Most Unique Gifts & Décor Boutique Absolutely Fabulous

Diane Silverstein had never heard of the show “Absolutely Fabulous” when she named her aptly-titled gifts and décor boutique in central Huntington Beach. But the fun-loving, irreverent, blonde, champagne-promoting show does give a glimpse into what makes Absolutely Fabulous such a treasure. Absolutely Fabulous is not your run-of-themill, Hallmark-style gift shop; they are as fun and irreverent as the show they share a name with. “We’re like family here,” glows Diane. “I give my regulars a 10% discount on everything, and we often know what they’re looking for before they do.”

The nature of gift purchasing has changed greatly since The nature of gift purchasing has changed greatly since the advent of the internet. How has Absolutely Fabulous stayed above the fray and blossomed while the rest of the gift industry flounders? “That’s easy,” responds Diane Silverstein, “quality, selection, price range, and ease of shopping.” After many visits to her “absolutely fabulous” gift and décor shop, I would have to agree. “Plus – we ship world-wide, so you can mail your stuff right from here!” While the internet excels at making home shopping the easiest experience, when you know exactly what you’re looking for, much of holiday gift-giving starts with “who is this for,

and how much do I want to spend on them?” Absolutely Fabulous makes this type of shopping easy with their “you know the personality, we know the product” approach to holiday gift-giving. “You see,” Diane explains in her charming English accent, “we spend hours and hours searching for the best new products offered in the gift industry. When our customers come in with their lists, we walk them around and point out options that our customers would never have found in an internet search.”

Diane is not kidding on that last point. The variety and uniqueness of products at Absolutely Fabulous is astounding: hand-made jewelry, Miche Bag purses (the ones where you just drop the “insides” of your purse into a new shell, rather than having to dump all of your stuff out!), $10 silk scarves, old-school shaving kits for men, a “Daddy’s Tool Bag” that includes dia-

per changing equipment, and instructional DVD, face mask and other funny items, rare paintings by successful artists, large crystal chandeliers, crystal perfume bottles, stuffed animal baby bottle covers, piggy banks for kids, “dorm survival kits” for new students, wedding party gifts, rare Disney art and collectibles, Halloween-themed decor and gifts, Christmas decorations that range from very inexpensive bottle stoppers and tree decorations to 6-foot high collectible Santa dolls. Absolutely really does cover the gamut of gifts for anyone: “from birth to death and everything in-between is our moniker” Diane proudly states. I tend to agree.

Let’s see what other people have had to say about Absolutely Fabulous (we checked their reviews): “nicest ladies who took terrific care of me,” “Love this store. It’s amazing and wonderful to shop in.” The raves go on and on. Absolutely Fabulous is not only a local treasure, however, they have been awarded multiple national awards for her visual merchandising (did I mention that they have the best windows in the country – an honor repeatedly bestowed upon them by industry publications) and marketing. Diane was even flown to the United Kingdom by Gifts and Decorative Accessories Magazine (the leading magazine in the gift industry), put up in a hotel, and honored with the title of “VIP buyer.” “I guess they just like the selec-

tions I’ve made over the years,” Diane humbly responds when I ask why they chose her for this honor.

So what are you waiting for? For every dollar spent at a local shop, 48% goes back into the community. If you purchase from a major, non-local, retailer, the number is 13%. For the internet - nothing (unless the business or distributor happens to be close to you, which is highly unlikely)!! This holiday season, find out why Absolutely Fabulous is so appropriately-named. Give local family businesses your time. You will find that you spend both less time and less money, all while adding to the local economy. It’s a no-brainer!

The Proof is in the Paint with ONE WAY PAINTING

Ralph Waldo Emerson famously said “who you are speaks so loudly I cannot hear what you’re saying.” Keeping this quote in mind has served me well over the years, particularly in choosing friends … and when seeking out the services of professionals. In my opinion, integrity isn’t a word heard often enough in the business world. Competitive, certainly.

But unfortunately phrases like “bottom-line oriented,” “unscrupulous,” even “cutthroat” have cropped up in the vernacular when hearing home improvement gone wrong stories from fellow homeowners. That’s why it was so refreshing to come across Jeff McCabe and his Orange County-based One Way Painting.

In business since 1976, Jeff and his team serve all of the OC and specialize in interior and exterior residential and commercial painting. They swear by the rules of professionalism: “no cutting corners. No cheap materials. We pay attention to every detail, and never call a job complete until the customer is completely satisfied.”

Some might call it good Christian values. Others might say it’s simply good

business. But for the last 42 years, working from the heart has earned One Way Painting such a respected reputation in the industry that the vast majority of their work comes through repeat customers or referrals from repeat customers. The company’s success isn’t merely rooted in customer service though. Boasting a superior knowledge of available product on the market and hiring the most profes sional crews in the business also goes a long way.

“Our reputation speaks for itself; but if it didn’t, we have 16 satisfied employees on our permanent payroll who would put a hand up in

defense of the standards we set,” says Jeff. Standards which were born and bred through a commitment to ethical business practices and hard work. In 2001, Jeff teamed up with seasoned professional Ron Bartz as a journeyman, then took over the company when Ron retired, and has been growing it ever since.

In 2009, Jeff took the pair of threeman crews and expanded the operation to encompass six crews, two office staff, and a project manager who oversees jobs, right alongside the man with the plan himself. “We currently have four trucks on the road and I’d like a full fleet someday. I’d like to leave a legacy for my daughters, and that means more than just cans of paint and a warehouse full of equipment and materials.”

To Jeff, it means taking care of his employees, taking care of his family: taking care of business. The hope is that One Way Painting becomes a household name, for its quality of work and quality of values.

My husband and I can happily attest to both. When we moved into our home in San Juan Capistrano five years ago, we acquired quotes for exterior painting from several contractors, but were particularly impressed with Jeff and his crew. Prior to starting work at our home, Jeff came by in person to go over what the job would entail and answered all of our questions. His team showed up right on time the first day - and each subsequent day - and at the end of each day everything was cleaned up before they left.

process and followed up immediately upon completion of the job to ensure that we were satisfied with the results and our overall experience of working with One Way Painting).

Their attention to detail is found from start to finish. For exterior projects, they begin by power washing to clean and remove any loose paint, mildew or mold. Then the patching: with stucco, trenching around the foundations and priming with an acrylic. They’ll treat your wood siding, eaves, fascia,

“We pride ourselves on working with a team of long-term employees - we do not hire off the street,” says Jeff. “We guarantee our work and do not require payment till the job is completed and the customer is completely pleased with our work.”

Jeff and his crew delivered on these promises and more than exceeded our expectations - the result was outstanding work, a job completed on time and on budget and defined by unparalleled customer service (Kelly in his office was hyper-responsive to our inquiries during the estimating

Most work depends on the client’s preference: flat to semi-gloss, acrylic or oil finish. Inside walls see flat, matte, eggshell, satin, semi, or hi-gloss. If you have natural wood cabinets and they need refinishing, One Way’s crew will see to it that they look new again. Also licensed and bonded as commercial painters, Jeff’s crew has been making businesses and their buildings look new again for 42 years. With a free on-site estimate, your custom needs are sure to have a custom solution. No deposits required, and “no surprises along the way,” Jeff is quick to add.

“I think at the end of the day what sets us apart is taking our time with each and every customer that comes our way,” says Jeff. “We run a business like every person we interact with is family.” They may not be the cheapest out there, but then that wouldn’t fly in Emerson’s eyes, and not in Jeff’s either. “Our business is based on the Christian ethic of treating every customer with honesty and integrity. Every job is done ‘as unto the Lord.’ Does this mean we’re perfect? No. It does mean that we strive to do the best painting job possible.”

PULSED NEUROCARE

Pulsed Light Medical Technology for Neuropathy and Nerve Pain

In the Comfort of Your Own Home and at a Fraction of the Cost of Competitors or In-Office Treatments

There’s a lovely quote by the author Isak Dinesen, “the cure for anything is salt water - sweat, tears, or the sea.” But the real medicine of the natural world isn’t the ocean. It is Polychromatic light utilizing Red and Near Infrared light waves, to be exact. Treatment with polychromatic light is simple, and painless. David Christenson, owner and manufacturer of Pulsed Neurocare technologies, saw something special in NIR and red light, and has spent years perfecting the system.

But how exactly does light therapy treat anything? Flexible pads, with chipsets containing multiple diodes, red and Near Infrared in this case, are placed directly on

the skin - right over the injured area. And then in layman’s terms, “light energy from the diodes is

absorbed by proteins within cells, releasing nitric oxide, the body’s natural vasodilator.” If you didn’t get any of that, it’s ok. All you need to remember is that in just 20 minutes of treatment, your blood flow increases, and the boost in circulation heals just about everything. Especially peripheral neuropathy. One of the more common causes of neuropathy is diabetes, but a number of injuries, infections, and even toxins can cause symptoms. Typical treatments include heavy pain medications and antidepres-

sants. David and his Pulsed Neurocare system think otherwise.

“The net result of photobiomodulation is a cascade of beneficial chemical reactions throughout damaged nerve cells that stimulate healing.” Without the need of pills, the light energy boosts local circulation, persisting for several hours after the pads are removed. Since the pads are ergonomic, safe, relaxing, and easy to use, you’ll find it simple to place your trust in a Pulsed Neurocare System to deliver effective results.

Improved circulation increases the number of new capillaries that replace and damaged ones, which boosts collagen production, keeping cells elastic, and allows less scar tissue to form. And since you can purchase a Pulsed Neurocare system, you’ll be able to take the results home with you.

The Neurocare Systems Group, which includes Pulsed Neurocare, has been around for the last 7 years, “specializing in photobiomodulation class II medical equipment for lumbar, nerve pain, brain care, and peripheral neuropathy.”

Pulsed Neurocare is simply the highest quality, most advanced, and powerful system on the market, utilizing technology originally developed by NASA for use on shuttle missions.

The Pulsed Neurocare light therapy boots contain twice the diodes as the next neuropathy boot, with more advanced firmware in controllers with 2 backlit displays for two-thirds the price of its competitor.

“I went from victim, to advocate, to distributor, to manufacturer of the equipment. Using this remarkable technology on myself for decades and being against dangerous drugs and unnecessary surgeries, committing my life to continue advancing this technology is a passion of mine” he says. “My philosophy is simple; create the most elite systems on the market...and sell them for less.”

American designed and engineered, the light therapy stimulates the release of Nitric Oxide and ATP in cells, which Vaso dilates significantly increasing the blood flow and allows them to accept nutrients faster, and get rid of waste products at the same time. Increasing lymphatic system activity and reducing excitability of nervous tissue stimulates the repair process: invisibly.

David speaks to his background with advanced non-invasive and effective alternatives to drugs and surgeries with an emotional tone.

Eliminating the middleman and costly mark-ups are trademarks to his approach, as a brand owner and manufacturer in the business of keeping pain at bay, and it isn’t an approach he takes lightly. “Net results are less pain, to get you back to your life.” Into the sea, if you were Dinesen.

Pulsed Neurocare boots are so versatile, they can be used on other areas of the body you are experiencing pain.

Complication Rates After Surgery for BPH

(Benign Prostate Enlargement): Real-World Data

A very important large clinical study was presented at the European Association of Urology 2021 Annual Meeting (EAU 2021). The findings from the largest United States analysis for treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) reveal that overall complication rates are lowest after treatment with the Urolift® System when compared to surgery and other minimally invasive procedures.

BPH RELIEF

without medications or major surgery

The study clearly demonstrates that complication rates following surgery for BPH are higher than treatment with the minimally invasive Urolift® System. Dr. Daniel Rukstalis explains the importance of this study as research in the area of surgical or minimally invasive procedures for BPH is sparse. “We found the UroLift System had the lowest overall rate of complications at 300days post-treatment,” says Dr. Rukstalis1

As an early user of the Urolift® System and a certified Urolift® Center of Excellence2, and certified instructor for the Urolift technique, I am very excited to see clinical data that confirms the excellent outcomes my BPH patients experience in my private urology practice. Treating men with BPH, also known as enlarged prostate, is a major focus for minimally invasive treatments at Pacific Coast Urology Medical Center.

Many of my patients are surprised to learn that over 40 million men in the United States are affected by BPH. This condition occurs when the prostate gland that surrounds the male urethra becomes enlarged with advancing age and begins to obstruct the urinary system. While BPH is not life-threatening, the symptoms include interrupted sleep, daytime frequent urination, leakage of urine and an urgent need to urinate. Sometimes, it’s not possible to get to the bathroom in time! Urinary problems can cause loss of productivity, depression and decreased quality of life.

While medication has been the firstline therapy for enlarged prostate

Before

in the past, the treatment is often inadequate. Many patients do not experience adequate relief of symptoms. There are a number of side effects including, sexual dysfunction, dizziness, episodes of falling down and headaches. AND, NOW THERE IS MEDICAL DATA THAT SHOWS MEDICATION HAS BEEN LINKED TO DEMENTIA AND DEPRESSION.

When medication does not improve the quality of life for patients, the next treatment alternative often recommended by urologists is surgery. Unfortunately, surgery requires cutting, heating and/or removal of the prostate tissue to open the blocked urethra and can have numerous complications.

This large study documents that while surgical options can be effective in relieving symptoms, they can also leave patients with permanent side effects such as urinary incontinence, erectile dysfunction, and retrograde ejaculation.

With the FDA approved in-office Prostatic Urethral Lift Procedure we now have a truly minimally invasive

After

procedure that affords patients the relief of symptoms without the effects and complications of surgery or medications. If you’re taking a medication, you should know that Urolift is 3 times as effective as any medication for prostate growth symptoms.

The FDA-cleared Prostatic Urethral Lift procedure using the UroLift® System is a clinically proven, minimally invasive technology for treating lower urinary tract symptoms due to BPH. If you would like to treat your BPH and learn more about the UroLift® System - done in an outpatient setting without cutting, heating, or removing prostate tissue, call to schedule your consultation.
