Should We Still have a Funeral?

C

OVID made funerals impossible, and the delays kept coming. Funerals were put off and families have been left without a critical tool in the bereavement journey: the funeral day.

It seems that it took COVID to help rouse our funeral-avoidant-culture to the importance of these ceremonial acts. We need them. And I say this not because I work for a funeral home, but because I heartily believe in the power of funerals.

Funerals act as a bridge that transitions newly bereaved families into the world of living with the loss.

So, should you still have the funeral?

Yes, I think you should. If you are wanting one, you are in fact needing one.

I want to invite you to think about the funeral you didn’t get to have: • How many people would you have invited?

Consider the others that would have gathered with you to commemorate.

They are with you in still missing your loved one. Holding an event, how many of them would still come?

I would guess, quite a few and you would be sweetly surprised.

• What special pieces would you have picked out?

Many people criticize how many decisions there are to be made in planning funerals and yes, there are a lot.

But many of these decisions provide opportunities for the expression of love and personality. What color should the casket be? Which pictures should we put out? Which flowers were her favorite? What music did he always listen to?

Answering each of these questions is an opportunity to remember, grieve and showcase the unique life of your loved one.

The best advice I can give is this: If you want to have a funeral, you should honor that. If you are feeling just the slightest desire to have one, why fight it? I think we try to talk ourselves out of funerals because it takes courage to schedule the day and face what has happened. Psychologically, we know that facing the death is more healthy than harmful.

The desire you have comes out of an old, deep need to commemorate.

We need to take time out of our own lives to remember the meaningful life that is now over If your loved one has been buried or cremated already, what you are looking for is called a Memorial. We hold these all the time for families For the instances where burial or cremation has already taken place, families can still hold Memorial ceremonies for their loved ones. These are meaningful, important and good.

Simply call your funeral arranger, “We need to have a memorial for my mom. We weren’t able to before, but now, it’s time.”

I hope that if you are feeling this need, you give yourself the special space of a funeral. I hope you share that space with others who need it.

And, I hope you will give your loved one the time their life is so worthy of.

• What stories would have been shared?

Funerals are prime places for the best stories and memories. Perhaps there are unknown stories out there, things to learn and treasure still about your loved one.

I recently was talking with a friend who attended a delayed funeral for a family member. I asked about how it was or if it felt awkward? “Oh no,” she said, “we didn’t know how much we needed it.”

Time doesn’t diminish this need.

DOHENY BIKE The Fastest Growing E-Bike Company in Dana Point

You might be surprised to learn what the country’s fastest growing industry is and it’s not RV sales, in spite of a year of lockdown. But the demand to get on the road is certainly fueling the drive toward recreational activities in North America, and e-bikes are running away with the market.

F

ueled by demand from both Canada and the U.S., e-bikes are looking at an annual growth rate of close to 11% over the next few years, marching right along with a booming housing market and burgeoning infrastructure development.

Targeting not only recent retirees, but enthusiasts of all ages looking to stay

active, get outside or simply prefer to tool around town on an E-bike - the evolved and infinitely more exciting electric iteration of the traditional two-wheeler.

While E-bike purveyors are seemingly on every corner, few have experienced the explosion in interest and growth locally like Doheny Bike - the fastest growing E-bike company in Dana Point.

This is perhaps due in large measure to the popularity, versatility,

utility and affordability of the company’s Fold N’ Go collection - available in a array of colors and profiles.

But undoubtedly in equal measure is the mission of its co-owners - Jason Spates and Micah Meiring - to “give back to the community.”

“We recognized the opportunity to give back, to contribute to our community that shaped our childhood, and it felt natural to encourage mobility and personal freedom when the pandemic had taken so much of it away.” Jason and Micah are a couple of local Dana Point dads, lucky enough to have lived near the worldfamous Doheny Beach surf spot their entire lives. “Our freedom was nearly unlimited as kids in the 1970’s and 80’s - we wanted our own kids to be as mobile as we were.”

With a background in commercial truck leasing and loans, and an early pandemic ride on his nephew’s electric scooter, genius was born.

City of Hope’s Highly Specialized and Compassionate Care Transforms Grateful Patient’s Breast Cancer Journey Sarah Sanders wasn’t shocked when she was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 41 in September 2015. In fact, she expected it.

T

hat’s because Sanders has a strong family history of the disease on her father’s side. Her paternal grandmother died at age 35 from breast cancer, an aunt passed away at age 50, and another aunt was diagnosed in her 60s and successfully treated. This knowledge made all the difference in Sanders’ approach to her breast health.

Another thing that made all the difference in her breast cancer care was her choice of oncologist, Wade Smith, M.D., who specializes in breast cancer treatment at City of Hope Newport Beach Fashion Island. After her tumor was removed, Dr. Smith performed cutting-edge genomic testing that determined chemotherapy wasn’t necessary. Sanders said that when Dr. Smith told her the news, it was the only time she cried.

Sanders recognizes how important it is that her tumor was discovered early. Sanders’ family history caught the attention of her OB/ GYN, who referred her for genetic and other testing. Sanders learned that she had the ATM mutation that increased her cancer risk. Then an MRI revealed a small tumor in its early stages, close to her armpit, that may not have been caught with a traditional mammogram. Because of the gene mutation and her family history, Sanders chose to have a double mastectomy.

Recuperating from the procedure was challenging. Pre-diagnosis, Sanders led a take-charge lifestyle. For Sanders, the most “life-changing aspect” of breast cancer was letting someone else take care of her – specifically, her mom, Teri, who basically moved into Sanders’ home to help her.

Between the mastectomy, reconstructive surgery, an infection, and a hysterectomy, Sanders had six surgeries within one year. During this time, she was referred to Jeffrey Weitzel, M.D., a City of Hope clinical geneticist who studies the ATM mutation and took her care “to a level no one else can match.”

The Massage Associates Celebrating 20 Years in South OC!

There is a beautiful book on writing penned by Haruki Murakami called “What I Talk About When I Talk About Running.” From the title, you’d think it was a book on running.

A

nd it is. But it is also a deep meditation on the act of getting a pure thought on paper, and the intersectional discipline it takes to be good at both: running, and writing. The truly standout feature of the book is its seamlessness.

Learning and absorbing without noticing it happen. Michelle Bryant, owner of The Massage Associates in San Juan Capistrano, knows a thing or

two about getting results without her clients seeing the process.

Born and raised in Southern California, Michelle got her degree in Biology from UC San Diego, and moved to Orange County when she got married. In February of this year, she celebrated a special event, and if you guessed her wedding anniversary, well, almost. The Massage Associates have been in business since February of 2001, and while the impact of COVID-19 has put a bit of a damper on celebrations, Michelle and team are more dedicated than ever to providing best in class service, inviting new clients into the community, and helping people feel pain free.

M

y husband and I like to joke that we run an after-hours speakeasy out of our home.

When the kids are finally asleep for the night and the dishes are all done, we bust out the fancy cheese and crackers, open a bottle of wine, and unfurl the tin foil around a decadent bar of dark chocolate.

Of course, we have to hide the evidence from prying eyes, so in the morning we don’t have to answer questions about the chocolate wrapper, wine cork, or ice cream scoop. We laughed at each other the other day while cleaning up the evidence of our adults-only snacktime when we agreed that the best gift we could give each other was a night in a hotel room, so there weren’t any dishes to do, and plenty of activities during the day to keep our ourselves - and our offspring entertained.

After the surface prep is completed, a very effective moisture control primer is applied to the concrete. “This is extremely important” says Paul because for many homes built in Socal before 2005, elevated moisture vapor levels in the garage concrete can have a detrimental impact on floor coatings. Paul does a fast and non-destructive moisture test for every one of the pre-2005 homes he visits and develops a unique installation plan for each home. For newer homes, Paul and his crew can use a basic primer that dries a bit faster allowing installation of a garage floor in as little as one day!

The color chips that give the Perkins floor its legendary appearance are sandwiched between this primer and finish coat. Perkins carries the widest selection of colors and sizes in the market and uses a ‘full chip broadcast’, not a partial sprinkling of chips like many of its competitors. “The full chip broadcast gives the floor a consistent appearance and makes the floor much more durable and helps hide dirt better than the partial broadcast finish” says Paul.

But the fun-loving, irreverent, blonde, champagne-promoting show does give a glimpse into what makes Absolutely Fabulous such a treasure. Ralph Waldo Emerson famously said “who you are speaks so loudly I cannot hear what you’re saying.” Keeping this quote in mind has served me well over the years, particularly in choosing friends … and when seeking out the services of professionals. In my opinion, integrity isn’t a word heard often enough in the business world. Competitive, certainly.

ut unfortunately phrases like “bottom-line oriented,” “unscrupulous,” even “cutthroat” have cropped up in the vernacular when hearing home improvement gone wrong stories from fellow homeowners. That’s why it was so refreshing to come across Jeff McCabe and his Orange County-based One Way Painting.

In business since 1976, Jeff and his team serve all of the OC and specialize in interior and exterior residential and commercial painting. They swear by the rules of professionalism: “no cutting corners. No cheap materials.

We pay attention to every detail, and never call a job complete until the customer is completely satisfied.”

Some might call it good Christian values. Others might say it’s simply good

But for the last 42 years, working from the heart has earned One Way Painting such a respected reputation in the industry that the vast majority of their work comes through repeat customers or referrals from repeat customers. My husband and I can happily attest to both. When we moved into our home in San Juan Capistrano five years ago, we acquired quotes for exterior painting from several contractors, but were particularly impressed with Jeff and his crew.
