ATTENTION ALL MEDICARE ENROLLEES…….IMPORTANT TAX PLANNING NEEDED Being properly educated about Medicare is important …However, it is only part of planning to manage your healthcare costs.
he traditional approach is to focus on keeping your Medicare and out of pocket costs to a minimum. This approach, while important, overlooks probably the most important element which is tax planning to try to minimize your monthly Medicare Part B premium costs. This important step is never discussed and is overlooked by senior health agents who don’t have the training to deliver important tax savings. As you may know, you pay Medicare Part A and Part B premiums (which are typically deducted from your Social Security benefit check). The monthly premium cost can range from approximately $136 to $461 per month
based upon your Modified Adjusted Gross Income (MAGI) which is your normal AGI plus any tax-exempt interest and other non-taxable income. At various income levels, the Medicare Part B premium costs are increased. Normally, premium costs will continue to rise since the government will adjust them for inflation. Your income number for tax year 2019 actually determines your Medicare Part B premium cost two years later for calendar year 2021. Prescott Tax & Wealth Management is offering a $99 tax planning session with Peter Prescott (CPA & Masters in Taxation) to the first 50 people who respond to this ad.
Peter will review your 2018 tax returns and estimate your 2019 income (MAGI) to assist with keeping your income below the annual income threshold levels in an effort to minimize your Medicare premium costs and tax bill.

Your Home Care Ad (NEW)
By Donald A. Hunsberger, Esq.
ecades ago we published a piece warning parents sending their kids to college for the first time to provide their children with more than what freshmen need to pack for their lives at school. Our article described materials the undergrads should leave at home with their parents, as well as take away to the university: every student who is over eighteen should (MUST), leave their parents with an Advance Health Care Directive, a Durable Power of Attorney for Property and Finances, and a very strongly drafted HIPAA form. We gave out reams of these articles to parents and students, but over time, for no particular reason, the distribution flow dried up. We stopped circulating the article, except to our own clients at the workplace whom we knew had children going off to school. Sadly, one fine young man of our acquaintance left to study on the East Coast, well equipped for his academics, but without any of the paperwork for his parents when he got sick. He went across the country, leaving his family in Orange without the tools to talk to doctors, hospitals, nurses, or any other health care provider when, as it tragically came to pass, he had a heart attack away from home. The result was too painful to fully relate. Just know that even after this wonderful fellow had passed on, his family was not able retrieve their son’s medical records to learn what precise10 October 2019
ly had taken their cherished child. Before he died, Mom and Dad could not discuss matters with the health care providers, who were simply following the law as provided by our Congress.
so. Access to medical information is worthless without the authority to tell the doctors what to do next.
We do not want this to ever happen again. Here is the paperwork you MUST have for your offspring before they go away for school, once they are eighteen:
DURABLE POWER OF ATTORNEY FOR PROPERTY AND FINANCE: Gives you authority to talk and deal with your student’s bank, his dormitory, university, employer and other entities who can sometimes help in crisis situations.
HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act): a US law preventing your contact with health plans, doctors, hospitals and other health care providers without a HIPAA form. You CANNOT plan on talking to these people WITHOUT THE HIPAA FORM on file. If they do talk to you without a HIPAA authorization, they are putting themselves and their employer at risk
Each of these documents is indispensable. No parent should say goodbye without all of these forms on hand at home and in the files of the new scholar’s school. No exceptions to this rule: Keep originals of each in your files at home, and be sure that the school which he or she will be attending has copies on file so that they have been notified in advance of your preparations.
ADVANCE HEALTH CARE DIRECTIVE: While HIPAA forms allow you to talk to the Medical people, the Advance Health Care Directive gives you the authority to direct doctors and make decisions about the student’s care when your child is not able to do
Parents want college to be a time of learning and wonder. Nothing we have advised will detract from that experience; instead, proper planning will remove one worry from the lives of Mom and Dad as they send their future President off to the Ivy-covered halls.

From Confusion to Understanding Compassion & Experience are necessary in the complex Medicare Insurance Industry. We’ve got the couple for you! By Jody Robinson Photography by Diana Schmitt, Accent Portraits by Diana
arly in my writing career, I had the opportunity to interview many successful entrepreneurs for an OCbased regional business/lifestyle publication. While the scope of the featured businesses was diverse, the owner/operators all shared an unerring passion for their profession and a common belief that “if you love what you do, the money will follow.”
It didn’t take long after meeting Denice and Stephen Merrill for me to discover this energetic, enthusiastic couple were obviously cut from the same entrepreneurial cloth. As specialists in the often confusing Medicare insurance industry, they educate seniors on the ever-changing nuances of Medicare and the myriad of Medicare Insurance plans available. For the past sixteen years, Denice has been working in the insurance industry, first as an independent agent, and then as an incorporated business owner, as Merrill Insurance Services Inc. entered the market in 2009. Like any other field, there are the requisite hoops to jump through on the way to owning one’s own insurance business, and Denice has leapt through them all. State board exams, licensing, yearly certifications. “Even with all the classes, there is nothing that can beat years and years of experience,” she says. “I continue to learn and that is what keeps my interest”. It is like a puzzle to fit the unique plan for that unique person. This is not something you can easily do on your own without some guidance from a professional. As an independent agent, broker and business owner, Denice found that there was not just one approach to the process of “guiding people, organization and staying in 12 October 2019
touch. “Keeping myself open, selfless and available started setting Merrill Insurance Services apart from others in the industry, and I’ve always tried to operate in a way that I would want to be treated in any given market - to never approach anyone as a salesperson.” I like to find what we might have in common. Enjoy people. It’s easy - Today’s
seniors are so diverse, active, and great travel stories! Once we help someone, its usually a relationship for life. It’s also important to Know your product and services inside and out. Don’t try to be the jack of all trades! Lots of agents try to do it all, and end up knowing very little about the products they are recommending. This leaves the client vulnerable - typically in the area of prescriptions. Clients began flooding in. In the ensuing years, Denice and her husband Stephen (who joined the agency in 2012 have focused their efforts to exclusively supporting the senior market. “We have both found incredible contentment and passion in our day to day lives and helping seniors. Education and taking the time to explain the details is what makes us different.” We always look at what makes the best financial sense for the client, even if it means suggesting they hold off on activating their Medicare and not enroll with us for a period of time.... (sometimes staying with an employer plan can be the most prudent). Toward that end, Denice is a regular editorial contributor to Sorbet - a SoCal Senior publication and is the sole presenter at a series of educational seminars on Medicare each month at Mission Hospital. Standing in the spotlight is usually outside her comfort zone and she found the idea of speaking to a large group unnerving. But she talks to the audience like she does to each and every one of her clients: as individuals, with families, and history, and legitimate concerns about their future. “By offering or showing all options, we can help everyone that is 65 and over. There is just not a one plan that fits all.” At these seminars, Denice explains Medicare Basics and the Full Benefits of Medicare in a side-by-side comparison model and finds that “everyone benefits because it is so interactive and lots of questions get asked.” Questions like “What does Medicare A or B Cost?” and “Do I have to activate Medicare when I turn age 65?” Or Questions like “How will MY personal prescriptions be covered?” This is what might make one plan a better fit for you than another!,” she says. “Honestly, I can simplify and help you to understand your options of a Medi-Gap Supplemental policy which is a PPO Style of coverage or a Medicare Advantage HMO style of plan and they all offer amazing coverages, but its the everyday or every month
Even with all the classes, there is nothing that can beat years and years of experience. I continue to learn and that is what keeps my interest. October 2019 13
My success has come from being honest and just being human and down to earth. I’ve always felt blessed to have found this business, actually out of a time in my life that was difficult financially.
usages of medications that can really break the bank!” I want to protect people and have the skills to help them. We do reviews every year! Being self-employed has given Denice the opportunity to grow without limitations. “My agency now trains other agents and we are helping them replicate what has worked so well for us.” Staying true to her core values has helped everything fall gracefully into place, one hour at a time. “I truly enjoy people and hearing their stories,” says Denice, and these stories are what make her days. “Today, many businesses are so hands-off, so computerized. You’re told to call an 800# and then possibly get disconnected. I am told daily that clients appreciate when they call me, I actually answer the phone: it’s unheard of!” And we are still happy to meet with folks face to face rather than calling someone they’ve never met or may never talk to again. Denice’s husband, Stephen, is a product of the theory too. He’s the one that has always loved public speaking and has taken to this very naturally once you understand your products inside and out, then its a matter of simplifying it to help others understand it too. The personal aspect of still making house calls and sitting across from someone at their kitchen table is not a lost concept. “When you love what you do, it doesn’t seem like work,” says Denice. “My success has come from being honest and just being human and down to earth. I’ve always felt blessed to have found this business, actually out of a time in my life that was difficult financially. It took a few years and finding my stride before I was able to convince my husband to leave his engineering and sales background to join the company. Now the only thing he can say is that he wishes he’d done it sooner. We tend to draw people in that we can relate to, and Stephen found his success with folks who share similar interests like being outdoors, golfing, fishing, etc. We try and keep it fun. We love our clients and hope that is what comes through.” Here is some Helpful Information.
WHAT CAN YOU DO NOW - OCT 15TH - DEC 7TH (Annual Election Period)? 14 October 2019
You are able to switch from one Medicare Advantage Plan to another or from one Part D drug plan to another. The new policy will take effect on Jan 1 2020. You are able to apply for a Supplemental policy (PPO Style) and Part D prescription plan. The new policy will take effect on Jan 1 2020. If you are coming off of an employer plan and age 65+, you can enroll with either solution and the start date will be the first day you’ve chosen to come off the employer plan. If you already have a Supplemental plan, Example like a “Plan F” - please do not fear that your plan is going away! The Plan F isn’t going away, it is simply being discontinued to be offered for folks that are turning age 65 as of Jan 1, 2020 and after. If you currently have the plan in place or are already age 65 before Jan 1, 2020, it will still be offered to you. You will not lose your plan if you are currently on Plan F. MEDICARE INSURANCE IS COMPLICATED, we can SIMPLIFY IT FOR YOU ~ There are multiple ways of getting informed about Medicare and the Plans available to you - it is unique not only by state, but also by county! WHY OLDER ADULTS SHOULD REVIEW THEIR MEDICATIONS St Joseph Hoag Health is here to help You know the routine: Step 1: Get your prescription from your physician. Step 2: Get it filled by your pharmacist. But do you know about Step 3? Step 3: Have your medications reviewed once a year or more. Everyone who takes medication has good reason to periodically ask their pharmacist or health care provider to review the medications they are taking. This is particularly important for older adults. Your body changes as you age. Your drugs may interact differently, especially if you’ve added or subtracted one recently. And your diet or alcohol intake may have changed. As the U.S. Food & Drug Administration says: “It is important to be aware that more use of medicines and normal body changes caused by aging can increase the chance of unwanted or maybe even harmful drug interactions.”
TIPS FOR AVOIDING PRESCRIPTION PROBLEMS The National Council on Patient Information and Education offers a checklist to help you maximize the benefits of your medications while avoiding errors:
• When your doctor writes a prescription, make sure you can read it, because if you can’t, it’s possible your pharmacist won’t be able to either. Perhaps your doctor can enter your prescription electronically. • Make sure you can understand the instructions your doctor and your pharmacist give you so you can avoid mistakes. • When you pick up or are given your medication, confirm that it’s the medication your physician prescribed. • If you’re getting liquid medicine, ask your pharmacist for the best device, such as a marked cup or oral plastic syringe, to get the proper dose. • Make sure your doctor and pharmacist know about any allergies or adverse reactions you’ve had to medicines. • Read about the potential side effects of your medication on the information sheets that come with your medicine. You may need to recognize them if you experience one later. • Make sure all your providers know all the medicines you’re taking, including over-the-counter pain relievers, dietary supplements and vitamins. The Council also notes that some errors, such as taking someone else’s medication or mismeasuring a dose, most often occur at home. In some
cases, a person may take more than one medication with the same active ingredient. For example, if you’re taking a prescription pain medicine with acetaminophen, and then take an overthe-counter medication that also contains acetaminophen, you could exceed the recommended dose and damage your liver. If you need to dispose of expired or unwanted medications, turn them in safely on the DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, October 26, 2019 or find a year-round authorized collection site near you.
TALK TO THE EXPERTS But before you make any moves, it’s a good idea to talk to the experts. Signing up for the right Medicare plan can be confusing and, although we may wish they didn’t, plans change from year to year. To help you, St. Joseph Hoag Health, Orange County’s most trusted health care network, provides extensive resources and information about your Medicare options. You don’t even have to be a current patient to take advantage of our no cost offerings. This year, you can: • Seminar - Attend one of our conveniently located meetings throughout open enrollment where representatives from our partner health plans will discuss 2020 benefits. Feel free to bring a friend or family member with you. • Phone - Arrange a phone call or meeting with a trusted, independent licensed agent about your Medicare options. After October 15, you can even enroll in coverage right over the phone. • Online - Compare our contracted health plans’ 2020 benefits online by visiting our website at sjhh.org/ medicare.
All these options are at no cost to you and will help guide you in making the best Medicare choices for your 2020 coverage. To get started and RSVP for a meeting, call (855) 670-1938 or visit sjhh.org/medicare. 16 October 2019

Where’s the Party? By Jody Robinson
There are extroverts and introverts. There are loud personalities and reserved ones. Those who love dinner in with a few friends, or a real lollapalooza with everyone they know. The common ground between both types?
oth like a good party, no matter the size or shape. “At the center of all good gatherings is the sense of celebration,” notes Candy Hirte, owner of Costa Mesa’s Where’s The Party? store. Candy knows her way around a celebration. In business since 1990, she and a cadre of incredible ladies have been making every occasion special for their customers with everything from invites to home decor. “Customer service comes first, but that’s pretty simple when we all love the

idea of celebrating every holiday.” Nowadays the competition is building online, but even with expedited shipping, nothing really helps set the tone of a party like talking through a theme or decor details with an expert. “Each one of the wonderful women (there are 17 of them!) who work here can walk you through the process and share our etiquette gleaned from 29 years in business.” Paper goods, balloons, and home decor weren’t Candy’s original business plan. “I kind of stumbled into
the party,” she notes with a chuckle. “I met a darling girl at a class I was taking and she said she was interested in opening up a party store in Orange County! I jumped in with both feet, not knowing a darn thing about this business. Well, except that I do lo-ve parties.” Quickly growing to love chatting with each and every customer who walked in the doors, Candy soon realized that on a very personal level, the business was about the personal friendships she was developing, and the small and large moments that made up each

I could honestly spend hours wandering around the store looking at all the amazing hostess gifts, home decor and unique presents for weddings, baby showers, holidays and all of life’s other occasions. I’m already envisioning retro party ideas (think 80s, western, disco, Roaring 20s or other era-themed events where only a paper invitation will do).
Candy and her husband love their community, and often take the time to go out with their friends and family. “Obviously we love movies or relaxing with a good book, but giving back to those who surround us is so important to us. Through the store, through loving what I do every day, contributing to our local schools and philanthropies in the area. They’re our big supporters, and I must say, I

How Can I Tell If I Have Skin Cancer? By Kristy Fleming, MD
There are three main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Because each has many different appearances, it is important to know the early warning signs.
ook especially for change of any kind. Do not ignore a suspicious spot simply because it does not hurt. Skin cancers may be painless, but dangerous all the same. If you notice one or more of the warning signs, see a board-certified dermatologist right away, preferably one who specializes in diseases of the skin.
An actinic keratosis (AK) is a crusty, scaly growth caused by damage from exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. An AK is considered a precancer because if left alone, it could develop into a skin cancer. AKs are the product of a lifetime accumulation of UV damage and typically appear on areas most commonly exposed sun, such as the backs of the hands, forearms, face, neck, and scalp.
SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA
Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells arising in the epidermis, the skin’s outermost layer. SCCs often look like scaly red patches, crusty bumps, warts, or elevated growths with a central depression. SCCs may appear suddenly and some forms are tender to touch. They can become disfiguring and sometimes deadly if allowed to grow. More than 1 million cases of SCC are diagnosed each year in the U.S., which translates to about 115 cases diagnosed every hour. Incidence has increased by 200 percent in the past three decades in the U.S., and more than 15,000 Americans die each year from this type of skin cancer. 22 October 2019
BASAL CELL CARCINOMA
Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most frequently occurring form of all cancers, with more than 4 million cases of diagnosed in the U.S. each year. BCCs may look like open sores, red patches, pink growths, shiny bumps, or scars. Any skin lesion that doesn’t heal, or bleeds with even gentle trauma, such as drying with a towel, is concerning for a BCC.
Melanoma is a very dangerous form of skin cancer. Melanoma is caused mainly by intense, occasional UV exposure (frequently leading to sunburn), especially in those who are genetically predisposed to the disease. An estimated 178,560 cases of melanoma are diagnosed in the U.S. each year and is fatal for an estimated 9,320 of these patients. Fortunately, if melanoma is recognized and treated early, it is almost always curable.
WHAT PATIENTS NEED TO KNOW
1. Everyone needs to perform a selfskin exam once a month. 2. Melanoma can appear anywhere on the skin, including the palms/soles, under your nails, and places...for most, have never seen the light of day (genitalia). For this reason, it is important to look everywhere. Lock the bathroom door, get out a hand mirror, and check, it could save your life. 3. What to look for: ABCDEs, and an ugly duckling A - Asymmetry: If I draw a line down the middle, do the sides match? B - Border: Is there a nice crisp border, or does the mole melt into the surrounding skin? C - Color: Moles should be one color, one shade of brown. Is there a variety of shades or additional colors, such as black, red, white, or blue? D - Diameter: Any mole larger than 6mm, ie the head of a pencil eraser, has a higher risk of becoming melanoma. E - Evolution: Has it changed? F - The Ugly Duckling Sign: Most people have a “signature mole,” their own personal mole appearance and architecture. Is there a mole that seems different from all the others? 4. Everyone needs a full body skin exam by a board-certified dermatologist once a year, more frequently if you have a family history of skin cancer, a personal history of skin cancer, or live in an area with substantial sunshine.

Meditation Does a Body Good!
By the Align Pilates Team
In the medical and science field, research is finding the act of meditating contains a multitude of health benefits. These studies are discovering that the many forms of meditation drastically offset the effects of stress and aging at a cellular level.
to be sitting in an awkward lotus position to start soaking in the positive vibes. There are many different forms of mediation backed by doctors and scientists like “Mindful Meditation” and “Transcendental Meditation.” These same doctors and scientists also recognize “mindful” movement like tai chi, Pilates, and yoga as a form of meditation. In the end, all types of meditation result in taking us beyond the noisy chatter of the mind into a place of stillness and silence. Meditation is where the brain and the body can connect, and begin to restore the body to create a better quality of life. Here are 3 simple ways to start meditating today... 1. Start the Day Slowly - Before jumping out of bed to frantically get on with your busy life, just a take a few minutes to calmly say or write 3 positive things that are happening in your life. Let this positivity guide you through the rest of your day. 2. Breathe! - At any point in the day just pause and notice how you are breathing. Focus on how your body reacts to inhaling and exhaling. Then go beyond noticing and start to breathe bigger. Take a full inhale, pause, then exhale all the air out and repeat this for a minute or so. Notice the difference and go on with your day.
o much so that some doctors and scientist are proclaiming meditation could be the future of medicine. For example, a study published in the journal Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes, looked at 201 people with coronary heart disease. And asked them to either take a health education class promoting better diet and exercise, or one on Transcendental Meditation. Researchers followed up with participants for the next five years and found that those who took the medi24 October 2019
tation class had a 48 percent reduction in their overall risk of heart attack, stroke, and death. Many more studies like these are being conducted and continue to prove the benefits of meditation. The best part is that mediation is easy! Anyone can do it. Any preconceived ideas about meditation should be forgotten. Meditation is a practice that helps us take a break from the hectic pace of everyday life. It doesn’t require a specific spiritual belief, even a few minutes of meditation helps, and you don’t even have
3. Join a Class - Find a studio that offers meditation classes. An instructor will be able to help you learn techniques in meditation. Plus, you are dedicating time to learn the practice. The more you do it, the easier, and healthier you will be. So come and combat aging, release stress and meditate with us at Align Pilates and Yoga Center. Loaded Inheritance: Safe Gun Storage, Ownership and Disposal with California Gun Services By Ann Laurence
y grandparents owned a beautiful three bedroom casita in Solana Beach. Just up the road from the train station, their home was built in the twenties, and renovated completely when I was in high school. When my grandfather passed away, I moved in with my grandma, doing chores around the house for her and helping to maintain the garden. One day, I was looking for my grandfather’s whetstone, to sharpen an old pair of shears, and I stumbled across his Colt Python 357 Magnum. I had to look it up - I thought it might be a relic from one of the movies he worked on in the 50’s, but according to my grandma, it was just “one of those things your grandpa just insisted on having.” Jeff McCabe has gotten more of his fair share of calls from people like myself, who accidentally come across family firearms in their home and don’t have the first idea of what to do with them. The owner of California Gun Services, Jeff is in the business of safe gun storage, ownership and disposal. The first step? Following California gun laws. I had zero clue that by driving the Colt to the Army Navy to try and turn it in I’d be breaking a couple laws. According to Jeff there are laws restricting gifting or selling a gun, receiving a gun, borrowing a gun, transporting a gun, even storing guns. New laws come out every year, and it is almost impossible for anyone, even aficionados to keep up with them. Jeff and his team work closely with local law enforcement to ensure the process is easy and safe. 30 October 2019
My grandma hadn’t touched the revolver in years, though my grandfather had made sure she shot it at some canned tomatoes on a desert trip when they were younger. “I’m afraid the grandkids might find it,” she told me that day. “I’d feel safer without it.” A sentiment shared by Jeff’s friends, family and fellow church parishioners - many of whom have sought his assistance over the years to ensure the proper storage or disposal of firearms they found themselves in possession of upon the passing of a loved one.
What initially started as a favor for a friend has grown into a bonafide side business as word has spread about Jeff’s particular skill set and confidence in handling firearms. As the owner of the Orange-based One Way Painting, Jeff often encountered situations whereby he would come across a firearm when moving furniture around for a client prior to starting a painting project. “Many times, the firearm belonged to my client’s father, grandfather or late husband and she never touched it because she was afraid of guns, but didn’t know how to get rid of it safely. So many times these guns are loaded and just stuck in a nightstand or stored under the bed.” Raised in a family that had firearms for hunting and sporting, Jeff was taught early on how to handle, be respectful and always be safe when handling firearms. I believe that we as Americans have a great privilege to be able to own
a firearm, but with that comes an even greater responsibility to not only protect ourselves legally by complying with Federal and State laws, but to protect ourselves, our neighbors and most importantly, our children from all possible dangers associated with firearms.” San Clemente resident Rhonda Murphy couldn’t agree more. “There are many things to deal with when a loved one dies. In 2010, when cleaning out my husband’s closet, I came across several of his guns. I didn’t want to keep them and was unsure of what to do with them. My daughters didn’t want the guns and I didn’t want to deal with the hassle of storing them as my grandkids are often at my house. A friend suggested I should call Jeff. He was very nice, easy to talk with, trustworthy and knowledgable. He came to my house, checked all the guns to make sure they were unloaded and removed them. Jeff also told me that one of the guns was a collector’s item and was able to sell it for me. One less thing to have to worry about. I can’t recommend Jeff enough.” As part of their auditing procedures, California Gun Services gives clients the option of a Voluntary Registration Form (in the case where the weapon was inherited). Many of Jeff’s clients are like my grandma who just prefers that the gun is destroyed. Jeff holds a Federal Firearm License and as such, is able to take possession of firearms without a Gun Transfer. He can also inspect firearms to ensure they are still in working order, and even tell you if the gun, or guns, you have are California Compliant. “Most people are unaware that firearms that were purchased legally from a gun shop just a year ago may now be illegal in California,” says Jeff. “If we find a firearm that is out of compliance with the law, you’ll receive solid advice on how to make it compliant, sell it out of state, or potentially dispose of it. Our process is approved and certified by local law enforcement, it’s legal, safe and adheres to all state and federal firearms laws. “Since firearms last more than a lifetime, families often have small and large collections of guns in their home. Knowing what you have and what to do with those firearms is important. Whether it’s from a death in the family, inheritance, or just a need for clearing out some that you know you will never use, we can help. Following California gun laws is essential. We come to you. It’s a safe, easy and professional process.”
California Gun Services’ processes are approved and certified by local law enforcement and adheres to all state and federal firearms laws for the following services:
Jeff will come to you and inspect your firearms to make sure they are in proper working order and that they are California Compliant. If your firearm is not compliant with the California Law, you will receive solid advice on how to make it compliant or possibly dispose or sell it out of state.
If a firearm is found to be unsafe to use, cannot be repaired and has no historical value. California Gun Services will permanently destroy it by torching the receiver or frame into three parts or cutting it with a saw into five parts. Jeff will document this with photos and log it for the Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and email you the proof of destruction.
Private Party Transfers happen between two individuals and will need to take place at a Federal Firearm Licensed Dealer. Since this needs to be done at a Gun Shop, Jeff cannot offer this as an in-home service. If you have inherited or legally obtain a firearm, he can provide you with a Voluntary Registration form or you can download it from the California Department of Justice which is NOT required to do at a gun shop. California Gun Services has a Federal Firearm License and can legally come to you and take possession of a firearm without a Gun Transfer.
GUN PURCHASES OF UNWANTED FIREARMS OR COLLECTIONS
California Gun Services will come to you and appraise a single gun or an entire collection of any size. You will receive an explanation of how guns are legally sold and transferred. California Gun Services can then make you a fair market value offer and/or explain how a gun can be put up for sale on consignment.
AMMUNITION AUDIT To connect with Jeff directly, call (714) 639-9608 or for more information, visit CaliforniaGunServices.com.
California Gun Services will make sure you are using the right ammunition for the firearms that you have and that it is legal in the State of California. Jeff will inspect the ammunition to make sure that it has been stored correctly, is in good condition and will ensure that the ammunition is being stored properly, using the right type of container and stored in the right location in your home. Scott and Diana Schmitt
Ode to Joy Developing Memories with Accent Portraits by Diana and San Juan Photo & Digital By Jody Robinson I was at a retail store the other day, when a group of tourists asked me to take a photo of them in front of the window display - an incredible arch made solely out of the pages of reclaimed books from a library that had mostly burned down. An ode to what had been once. The photo? An ode to an ode. We’ve all heard the saying, “a picture is worth 1,000 words.” How many words are your memories worth? Diana and Scott Schmitt believe that those photos, 42 October 2019
those odes, are priceless. At the San Juan Capistrano-based Accent Portraits by Diana and San Juan Photo & Digital, the couple have devoted the last three decades to taking and developing memories for their customers. “People ask us all the time what we specialize in,” says Diana. “‘Life’ is what we respond with. We want to be there for you and your family every step of the way, from preschool portraits, to beach days, to weddings and pets. Private homes, debutante balls and birthdays for ages 1-101!” Giving clients the best quality covers much more than a simple photo. Using a lifetime of skills, Diana and Scott set out in 1989 to get each client the product they wanted. With each person’s shifting needs come the full range of services that Accent Portraits and San Juan Photo & Digital can provide: $30 specials, a birthday club, portrait memories in a fun, easy fashion. “We’re like a family here. We are taking photos now of kids whose parents came in to see me almost thirty years ago!” Thirty years ago, not many could predict that film photography would almost go extinct. The rise of the digital age overwhelmed analogue, nearly to the point of no

return. Yet, many amateur and professional photographers still swear by old-fashioned chemistry. The new problem? Almost nobody develops photos anymore. Short on your own dark room like the rest of us? Luckily, the wide range of services Diana and Scott offer covers everything from film to phones - and has been busy uniting the digital and analogue worlds for its customers in a fun, easy fashion. “We’re still the only lab that processes film,” says Scott, “and it’s making a huge comeback. Everyone has photos on their phones that would otherwise never be printed. San Juan Photo to the rescue!” The last man standing, as it were, Accent Portraits and San Juan Photo & Digital are out to change the photography game entirely. Not just film, or portraits, or product development. “It isn’t just better services: it’s better service.” Cheryl Wayland, long-time employee and staple of the South County shop, knows the name and story behind almost every client Scott and Diana have. “We take care of our own here,” says Diana. “That means free portraits for seniors at the community center each year, donated portrait certificates to each charity and school that asks, and free event coverage for animal rescue organizations. It’s good for everyone.” While Diana and Scott have plenty to do in their free time, from walking the family dog to riding horses, the real hobby lies in the time they dedicate to each client that walks in their doors. But being award-winning photographers and the developers of quality photos at an award winning custom lab isn’t where the fun stops with Diana and Scott. That joy you felt when you developed a roll of film after a family vacation? Could you describe that feeling, those memories with 1,000 words? You could certainly try. Or, you could make some new memories, and experience that feeling again and again and again, simply by walking into Accent Portraits and San Juan Digital Photo & Digital. Connect with Diana and Scott by calling (949) 6616465 or stop by their studio and lab located at 32281 Camino Capistrano in San Juan Capistrano. For more info, visit www.accentportraitsbydiana.com
In an ideal world, everyone would have enough to eat and a comfortable home. Until that day 3,000 at-risk South Orange County residents visit South County Outreach each month. Help feed our neighbors in need. Your donation of cash or non-perishable food makes a difference each day.

Doggie Dental Care Just like people, your furry friends need dental care to prevent tooth decay By Lynlee Fluent, DVM
ust like proper nutrition and regular exercise, dental hygiene is a key component to your pet’s overall health and well-being. Some people just expect their pets to have bad breath, but just like their owners, cats and dogs can suffer from periodontal disease, oral pain, and tooth loss as a result of poor (or nonexistent) dental care. From the American Veterinary Dental College: “Periodontal disease is the most common clinical condition occurring in adult dogs and cats, and is entirely preventable. By three years of age, most dogs and cats have some evidence of periodontal disease. Unfortunately, other than bad breath, there are few signs of the disease process evident to the owner, and professional dental cleaning and periodontal therapy often comes too late to prevent extensive disease or to save teeth. As a result, periodontal disease is usually under-treated, and may cause multiple problems in the oral cavity and may be associated with damage to internal organs in some patients as they age.” 46 October 2019
PREVENTING DENTAL DISEASE IN YOUR CAT OR DOG Tooth brushing and regular dental prophylaxis (ultrasonic scaling above and below the gumline, polishing and full-mouth x-rays under general anesthesia) are the best preventive measures. Brushing should be daily and should start with the puppy and kitten to create good habits, using a small pediatric toothbrush or a pet-specific toothbrush. Dental prophylaxis performed by a veterinary professional should be done regularly based on your vet’s recommended schedule, usually at least once a year once the pet reaches about 3 years of age. Home dental care in the form of dental chews and toys that mimic a toothbrush are recommended as well, of course always under the guidance of your veterinarian. Beware of “anesthesia-free” dental procedures that only address above the gumline, and not under the gums where most of the bacteria and disease lies.
REGULAR CHECKUPS AND PROFESSIONAL CARE Your vet will examine your pet’s teeth during routine exams, so visit your veterinarian every 6 to 12 months for a wellness check-up. As your pet ages, it may need more frequent dental care in the form of anesthetic dental prophylaxis and oral surgery as it becomes more susceptible to periodontal disease. Most surgical procedures can be performed right in your regular vet’s office, while some complicated procedures may require referral to a veterinary dental specialist. Catching and treating the disease early (and prevention!) greatly reduces the need for oral surgery for your pet. Pets of the Month Three year old Figgy is what you’d call a gentle soul. She has a sweet personality and enjoys being brushed and petted. Figgy prefers a quiet lifestyle and would make an ideal lap cap for someone looking for a goodnatured feline friend.
Cheetah may look like an exotic wildcat, but she definitely has the personality of a loving lap cat. Rather than sprinting through the savannah, she prefers to lounge by your side. Cheetah is three years old, gets along well with other kitties, and would make a great fit in just about any home.
Cosmo is a scruffy little guy that you can’t help but fall in love with. From his toothy grin to his loveable demeanor, he has all the makings of a great family dog. Cosmo is three years old, gets along with other dogs, and enjoys meeting new people. Could he be the one for you?
This happy puppy is Cash, a six month old shepherd mix who has come a long way. When initially brought to the shelter, Cash was very scared and mostly hairless due to skin infection and mange. After medical attention and a lot of love, he is growing up to be quite a handsome and healthy pup. Cash is now ready for adoption and can’t wait to find his forever family.
If you would like to know more about the animals listed here, please call the San Clemente/Dana Point Animal Shelter at (949)492-1617 or visit with them at 221 Avenida Fabricante, San Clemente.

The Law Firm of Allen, Flatt, Ballidis & Leslie:
BRINGING JUSTICE HOME
y sister was hit by a snowboarder when she was sixteen. On skis, just a couple of turns from the bottom of the hill - in plain sight of a SLOW sign. The snowboarder was young; not as young as my sister, but still, a young man. My parents, long-time skiers, contacted him directly, trying to see if they could get any results at all: any reparations for their high-school sophomore, laid up on the couch for innumerable weeks. There was nothing they could do. I remember feeling helpless as a child, watching the entire drama unfold. I can’t imagine what my parents must have felt. No one could help. No loopholes. No empathy, from anyone else involved. There is a longstanding joke in the mainstream media that all lawyers are snakes. The word attorney no longer brings to mind the grainy black and white image of Gregory Peck defending the downtrodden as Atticus Finch. Certainly, in some cases, the joke must contain some shred of truth. But at Allen, Flatt, Ballidis & Leslie, the welcoming, family-like environment they’ve curated isn’t too far off from the home ambience of the fictional Finch family. Folks who actually want to do good in the world. Right wrongs. Obtain real results. Suzanne Leslie is a managing partner and attorney at Allen Flatt for more than 30 years, and prides herself on 56 October 2019
the reputation they have built. “Our years of experience have given us more knowledge in the personal industry field than other law firms can claim. What sets us apart is exactly as our tagline says: experience, compassion, results.” As a firm, Allen Flatt have helped many families through the emotional trauma of a great many personal injury cases. Though they have attorneys that focus on estate planning, preparing wills, trusts, and contest matters, personal injury hits the closest to home. “We care about our clients, and our primary focus is to help them deal with the difficulties of being involved in an accident- be it pedestrian accident, automobile accident, slip and fall, or dog bite.” Handling the claims process for their clients lets them pursue their medical recoveries in peace, unlike my sister, or my parents. Fighting a losing cause often takes more energy than simply healing - or letting someone else rest, to do battle with their own body and take the necessary steps to get back to normal: whatever the new normal looks like. Offering a free consultation, with the promise that no recovery means no fee, attorneys like Suzanne offer their services on a personal level. “I started
out in the personal injury field to help people. I want to make sure my clients feel taken care of through every second of their claim.” Recognized by the American Institute of Personal Injury Attorneys and the National Association of Professional Women, Ms. Leslie has recovered millions of dollars for clients and thousands of settlements for clients. “Everyone in the firm shares compassion for the clients more than on a business level, and many of us have had first hand personal experience in what they may be going through,” she says. As a leader in her field, it is imperative to stay abreast of the newest strictures and developments in insurance law. The more she knows, the better her chances of winning your case. Atticus Finch would probably tell you that winning isn’t everything. But sometimes, to folks like my parents, to whom winning would mean seeing my sister get the reparations for her accident paid out, and letting her find her way back to walking again, winning is the only thing.
For more information on what Suzanne and her associates can do for you, call (949) 752-7474, or email firstname.lastname@example.org.

58 October 2019
By Jody Robinson Photography by Lana Farfan, Caught in the Moment Photography
iane Silverstein had never heard of the show “Absolutely Fabulous” when she named her aptly-titled gifts and décor boutique in central Huntington Beach. But the fun-loving, irreverent, blonde, champagne-promoting show does give a glimpse into what makes Absolutely Fabulous such a treasure. Absolutely Fabulous is not your runof-the-mill, Hallmark-style gift shop; they are as fun and irreverent as the show they share a name with. “We’re like family here,” glows Diane. “I give my regulars a 10% discount on everything, and we often know what they’re looking for before they do.” The nature of gift purchasing has changed greatly since The nature of gift purchasing has changed greatly since the advent of the internet. How has Absolutely Fabulous stayed above the fray and blossomed while the rest of the gift industry flounders? “That’s easy,” responds Diane Silverstein, “quality, selection, price range, and ease of shopping.” After many visits to her “absolutely fabulous” gift and décor shop, I would have to agree. “Plus – we ship world-wide, so you can mail your stuff right from here!”
While the internet excels at making home shopping the easiest experience, when you know exactly what you’re looking for, much of holiday gift-giving starts with “who is this for, and how much do I want to spend on them?” Absolutely Fabulous makes this type of shopping easy with their “you know the personality, we know the product” approach to holiday gift-giving. “You see,” Diane explains in her charming English accent, “we spend hours and hours searching for the best new products offered in the gift industry. When our customers come in with their lists, we walk them around and point out options that our customers would never have found in an internet search.” Diane is not kidding on that last point. The variety and uniqueness of products at Absolutely Fabulous is astounding: hand-made jewelry, Miche Bag purses (the ones where you just drop the “insides” of your purse into a new shell, rather than having to dump all of your stuff out!), $10 silk scarves, old-school shaving kits for men, a “Daddy’s Tool Bag” that includes diaper changing equipment, and instructional DVD, face mask and other funny items, rare paintings by successful artists, large crystal chandeliers, crystal perfume bottles, stuffed animal baby bottle covers, piggy banks for kids, “dorm survival kits” for new students, wedding party gifts, rare Disney art October 2019 59
and collectibles, Halloween-themed decor and gifts, Christmas decorations that range from very inexpensive bottle stoppers and tree decorations to 6-foot high collectible Santa dolls. Absolutely really does cover the gamut of gifts for anyone: “from birth to death and everything in-between is our moniker” Diane proudly states. I tend to agree. Let’s see what other people have had to say about Absolutely Fabulous (we checked their reviews): “nicest ladies
who took terrific care of me,” “Love this store. It’s amazing and wonderful to shop in.” The raves go on and on. Absolutely Fabulous is not only a local treasure, however, they have been awarded multiple national awards for her visual merchandising (did I mention that they have the best windows in the country – an honor repeatedly bestowed upon them by industry publications) and marketing. Diane was even flown to the United Kingdom by Gifts and Decorative Accessories Magazine (the leading magazine in the gift industry), put up in a hotel, and honored with the title of “VIP buyer.” “I guess they just like the selections I’ve made over the years,” Diane
humbly responds when I ask why they chose her for this honor. So what are you waiting for? For every dollar spent at a local shop, 48% goes back into the community. If you purchase from a major, non-local, retailer, the number is 13%. For the internet - nothing (unless the business or distributor happens to be close to you, which is highly unlikely)!! This holiday season, find out why Absolutely Fabulous is so appropriately-named. Give local family businesses your time. You will find that you spend both less time and less money, all while adding to the local economy. It’s a no-brainer! Connect with Diane and the crew at Absolutely Fabulous located at 6026 Warner Avenue in Huntington Beach, call (714) 842-1608 or visit www.absolutelyfabulous1.com

Travel Can Be Tough on Your Legs Medical compression stockings and socks are a travel essential By Livia De Los Rios
any people travel long distances and have to remain seated for two or three hours or even longer. They might not think much of it, but when movement is constrained, the blood circulation in the legs is restricted. This can contribute to heavy legs, leg pain and swollen feet and ankles. Prolonged sitting is also a major risk factor for the development of phlebitis and Deep-vein Thrombosis (DVT). Deep-vein Thrombosis involves the formation of blood clots (thrombi) in the deep leg veins during prolonged inactivity. In some cases, blood clots can migrate to the lungs resulting in a pulmonary embolism. When seated without moving for a few hours – whether by plane, train or automobile the risk of DVT could be four times higher and can happen to anyone during travel, regardless of age, weight or lifestyle.
