The best investment a business owner can make is investing in their own business. There has no better investment I could have made than my decision to advertise with Community Publications. The beauty of its publications is the forum for my firm to connect on a personal level so my future clients have a sense of who we are, why we care and how we may help them. This allows our clients to be productive the second they come into our office and to feel comfortable that they have made a good long-term decision for their future financial well-being.

The best business decision I ever made was to advertise with Community Publications - I’m proud to say that I have been participating since the very first issue. I have gained several hundred clients over the last decade due to my ad, and several hundred more from the referrals of my ad clients. I have a steady flow of business all year long, and South County Magazine has a lot to do with that.

Dr. Ivan Ho, DDS - Pro Smiles OC Committed to Exceptional Care

All throughout my youth, I wondered why people didn’t like going to the dentist. That all changed when I moved away from home to go to college, and had to find a new dentist for the first time. That experience opened my eyes to how intimate dentistry is and how vulnerable you feel if you are not comfortable in the dental office.

Your smile/mouth is the first thing people notice when they speak to you. Finding someone you trust to take care of your dental hygiene is imperative to enjoying the confidence a beautiful smile gives you. Ivan Ho, DDS is one of those select few dentists you can trust. From the moment you meet him, you are immediately touched by his warm nature and empathy.

Dr. Ho has been caring for patients for over twenty years and has won numerous awards and reviews that focus not only on his excellency within dentistry, but also the warmth with which he treats his patients - as welcome guests and friends.

As a University of Southern California School of Dentistry graduate and an award winning board certified dentist, Dr. Ho lectures nationally and internationally about both cosmetic and implant dentistry. His expertise and warm demeanor have earned him the respect and trust of both colleagues and patients.

“As a doctor myself, extensive knowledge and expertise is important,” says Patient Steve H., MD. “Dr Ho is truly an expert!”

Angela P., a local school teacher, echoes the sentiment and adds: “I’ve been searching for a dentist with honesty and compassion, I found Dr Ho through a co-worker and refer all my friends and family to him.”

Dr. Ho has had more than his fair share of time in the dental chair as a patient. This has given him the unique perspective of both a professional and a patient.

“I had extra teeth and gum issues that required multiple gum and oral surgeries from my childhood all through my adolescence,” says Dr. Ho. “Despite the many and varied procedures I went through, I was fortunate enough to see wonderful providers and I was extremely grateful for the care they gave me. The experience of rectifying my own oral health led me to pursue dentistry. I wanted to give

back to a profession that changed my life.”

In 1992, Dr. Ho started his practice in Laguna Hills and added a second office in Rancho Santa Margarita and with great dedication and hard work, cared for residents of both cities.

“As my children started to grow up, I realized that I wanted to spend more time with them while I could,” he says. “So I sold my Laguna Hills location and focused on RSM, which is where I lived. I recently relocated back to Laguna Hills as now my children have grown, but my parents need a little more attention. They reside in Laguna Woods Village.”

Dr. Ho has been enjoying his return to Laguna Hills and being able to care for patients that got him started twenty-plus years ago.

“It is not just fillings, crowns, implants, cosmetic dentistry or cleanings: it’s ‘beyond the nuances’ dentistry. Your oral health plays a very important role in your overall health and your ability to enjoy the simple pleasures of life like eating good food.

“After all, your smile is an indication of what is within.” Dr. Ho says with an engaging smile of his own.

Helping the Princess Say Goodbye to the Rat

There is so much discovery that takes place in transitions. For the most part, everything we’ve learned about or discovered in our home has been expected or a charming surprise. What wasn’t charming? The rats.

Our garage was built for Model-Ts and is small, quaint, and dips down in the middle due to age & structural issues. It’s an awesome old garage and, well, the rats thought so too. We set traps and my 4-year-old daughter, Eden, loudly announced her finding of our first catch. It briefly occurred to me to shelter her from it, but I know and believe our temptation to hide death from children is unhelpful. I also know her – she’s fascinated by creatures and doesn’t cringe or shy away from the idea of them being dead (many a dead snail or worm has been lovingly treasured by her). She lives in princess dresses and is thrilled with every bug that comes across her path. And, well, she had already seen the dead rat, so there was nothing to be done but begin answering the slew of questions she had. I learned early on in grief education that kids ask the questions they want answers to and stop asking when they have the information they want or when they recognize they need time to process the answers. So, when kids ask questions about death, the best path forward is to only, directly and honestly answer the question they asked.

As adults we tend to over-complicate things and get ourselves into sticky territory all too quickly in our explanations. Kids don’t need us scrambling to describe and answer all of life’s mysteries – they need to just know why the rat is dead.

My daughter watched as my husband put the rat into one of our trash cans and throughout the day asked to be lifted-up to see the rat’s body at the bottom of the can. Her sweet dad complied every time and the dead-rat-visits became a regular part of the following days.

A few days later, yard work took the rattrash-can out into the yard and grass and other debris was put on top of him and we couldn’t see him anymore. It bothered her very much that she could no longer see him. She wanted us to take the leaves and grass off of him. I knew we couldn’t do that and that she needed a place to move to emotionally and mentally with the rat.

My funeral experiences told me she needed to say goodbye. Her emotion and frustration confirmed it.

I called her over to the trashcan and said something like this:

“Eden, we are going to say goodbye to the rat. Let’s take a minute to share what we liked about him and why we are sorry he died.”

“Ok, momma.”

(We stood next to each other in front of the trash can.)

“Eden, what was your favorite thing about the rat?

“Ice cream!” (She shouted this with the biggest smile, I kid you not and no, I have no clue. I rolled with it).

“Ok, ice cream! Yeah! Rat, you remind Eden of ice cream and that’s a wonderful thing. We are sorry that you have to go, but we are grateful for the time we had with you in our yard and in our trash can. Thank you rat, goodbye.”

“Goodbye rat!”

And like that, she was off, running and playing. The rat didn’t come up again.

Until trash day.

We were sitting out front on our porch, watching the trash truck come and lift our bins. As the rat bin emptied into the truck and it pulled away, I heard Eden say calmly, “Goodbye, rat” and wave with her sweet, little girl hands.

What a precious thing it is to witness a heart that loves and gives itself the freedom to say goodbyes.

I think about that experience with her and consider what we learned together.

What I hope she learned about:

• Being curious is wonderful and good

• Asking questions is important and helpful

• Death doesn’t need to be hidden

• Loss hurts and we can’t change it

• Taking time to remember and give a little tribute is special and important

• It helps to say goodbye

What I learned about:

• The simple beauty of honesty

• How early and young we are when these first connections are made in our relationship to death

• How simple it was to make space for her sadness

• Absurd little ideas can lead to peace and help a little girl’s heart

• Validation is a path to healing and calm

• Leaning into these moments are worth it

Something I will cherish about that goodbye was the laughter her “ice cream!” shout injected. Funerals are almost always a solid mix of sorrow and laughing joy. I love that our trashcan ceremony had laughter, too.

I don’t think anything magical happened here or that I created a Hallmark moment by the trash can. But I know it was important and special. I feel that at the beginning of this relationship with death and grief we walked through it well with her. I realized later that I was able to take the patterns of funeral ritual and condense them down into a couple minutes. I witnessed their power as they took a sad and upset 4-year-old out of her confusion and into a sequence that gave respect and time to the loss she was feeling. Creating that space for her sadness, giving her a chance to witness the reality, share her thoughts (ice cream!), and be with her in that time of confusion was very significant to me. I get to have extraordinary moments with my kids all of the time, but this one with the princess, the rat, and the trash can will stay with me as a moment that was meaningful, a little bit silly, and very full of love.

A Promise Fulfilled in Orange County

Patients across the region gain increased access to advanced cancer care

When City of Hope unveiled its bold vision to bring its lifesaving care and pioneering research to Orange County, it was in response to a pressing need in the community.

Nearly 20% of patients with cancer left the region for advanced care, which created a burden on patients and their families. Additionally, cancer rates are expected to grow in Orange County by nearly 20% in by 2028.

City of Hope Newport Beach, the first phase of City of Hope Orange County’s expansion, opened in January 2020 and a comprehensive cancer campus is opening in Irvine next year. With the addition of the Pacific Shores Medical Group locations, City of Hope Orange County now has four locations in Orange County providing highly specialized cancer care for patients and their families.

The Orange County locations are in Huntington Beach, Irvine Sand Canyon and two locations in Newport Beach (Fashion Island and Lido).

Annette M. Walker, president, City of Hope Orange County (center), and the new City of Hope physicians.

“By welcoming Pacific Shores patients, physicians and staff to City of Hope, we are fulfilling our promise of bringing our advanced cancer care into the heart of our communities. City of Hope is honored to work with the nation’s leading researchers and clinicians, and we are privileged to welcome these like-minded experts from Pacific Shores to our team. Hope is indeed growing across the Southern California region,” said Annette M. Walker, president, City of Hope Orange County.

With 1 in 3 Americans receiving a cancer diagnosis and with everyone impacted by cancer in some way, that’s good news.

City of Hope is investing $1 billion to develop and operate a cancer campus of the future and network of advanced cancer care in Orange County. Lennar Foundation Cancer Center will open in the summer of 2022, followed by the county’s only specialty hospital exclusively focused on treating and curing cancer scheduled to open in 2025.

“This expansion means that we’ve quadrupled outreach in the county,” Walker said. “As we look to the fu-

ture and open the Irvine campus, we will have a comprehensive network of cancer care established, with breakthrough treatments and expert cancer care within reach throughout Orange County.”

Pacific Shores’ 14 physicians, 11 nurse practitioners and physicians and more than 200 staff became part of City of Hope on Aug. 6.

Established in 1986, Pacific Shores Medical Group has locations across Los Angeles and Orange counties. A cancer care pioneer, Pacific Shores is recognized for excellence in cancer therapy practices, receiving certification from the American Society of Clinical Oncology Quality Oncology Practice Initiative. It is also one of the most experienced cancer groups in the country, with more than 80,000 patient visits a year.

“Pacific Shores physicians chose to join City of Hope because of a shared interest in advancing cancer medicine through research, clinical trials and breakthrough treatments. We are delighted that our patients will have unprecedented access to City of Hope’s leading-edge treatments, extensive clinical trials and

highly specialized cancer expertise. Additionally, our physicians and staff welcome the opportunity to count on many world-renowned scientists and clinicians as colleagues and collaborators,” said N. Simon Tchekmedyian, M.D., founder and CEO of Pacific Shores Medical Group.

“As a Pacific Shores patient for 23 years, I am grateful that I will continue to have my trusted physician’s care now at City of Hope — known for saving the lives of people with cancer,” said Elizabeth Lucas, 84, of Long Beach. “This is care that is the best of all possible combinations. I’m getting world-renowned care close to my home.”

Orange County patients can also access care in adjacent locations in Long Beach in the Elm and Worsham neighborhoods. These locations will provide Northern OC residents with more options.

“It is heartening to watch City of Hope expand its reach throughout Orange County so that those undergoing cancer treatment can find care within a few minutes from their homes,” said Orange County patient Rob Montgomery. “Since going to the Newport Beach location, I’ve had more time to spend with my family, and that is my hope for others in Orange County. No one wants to undergo cancer treatment, but it is good to know that hope is here, in our community.”

PULSED NEUROCARE

Pulsed Light Medical Technology for Neuropathy and Nerve Pain

In the Comfort of Your Own Home and at a Fraction of the Cost of Competitors or In-Office Treatments

There’s a lovely quote by the author Isak Dinesen, “the cure for anything is salt water - sweat, tears, or the sea.” But the real medicine of the natural world isn’t the ocean. It is Polychromatic light utilizing Red and Near Infrared light waves, to be exact. Treatment with polychromatic light is simple, and painless. David Christenson, owner and manufacturer of Pulsed Neurocare technologies, saw something special in NIR and red light, and has spent years perfecting the system.

But how exactly does light therapy treat anything? Flexible pads, with chipsets containing multiple diodes, red and Near Infrared in this case, are placed directly on

the skin - right over the injured area. And then in layman’s terms, “light energy from the diodes is

absorbed by proteins within cells, releasing nitric oxide, the body’s natural vasodilator.” If you didn’t get any of that, it’s ok. All you need to remember is that in just 20 minutes of treatment, your blood flow increases, and the boost in circulation heals just about everything. Especially peripheral neuropathy. One of the more common causes of neuropathy is diabetes, but a number of injuries, infections, and even toxins can cause symptoms. Typical treatments include heavy pain medications and antidepres-

sants. David and his Pulsed Neurocare system think otherwise.

“The net result of photobiomodulation is a cascade of beneficial chemical reactions throughout damaged nerve cells that stimulate healing.” Without the need of pills, the light energy boosts local circulation, persisting for several hours after the pads are removed. Since the pads are ergonomic, safe, relaxing, and easy to use, you’ll find it simple to place your trust in a Pulsed Neurocare System to deliver effective results.

Improved circulation increases the number of new capillaries that replace and damaged ones, which boosts collagen production, keeping cells elastic, and allows less scar tissue to form. And since you can purchase a Pulsed Neurocare system, you’ll be able to take the results home with you.

The Neurocare Systems Group, which includes Pulsed Neurocare, has been around for the last 7 years, “specializing in photobiomodulation class II medical equipment for lumbar, nerve pain, brain care, and peripheral neuropathy.”

Pulsed Neurocare is simply the highest quality, most advanced, and powerful system on the market, utilizing technology originally developed by NASA for use on shuttle missions.

The Pulsed Neurocare light therapy boots contain twice the diodes as the next neuropathy boot, with more advanced firmware in controllers with 2 backlit displays for two-thirds the price of its competitor.

“I went from victim, to advocate, to distributor, to manufacturer of the equipment. Using this remarkable technology on myself for decades and being against dangerous drugs and unnecessary surgeries, committing my life to continue advancing this technology is a passion of mine” he says. “My philosophy is simple; create the most elite systems on the market...and sell them for less.”

American designed and engineered, the light therapy stimulates the release of Nitric Oxide and ATP in cells, which Vaso dilates significantly increasing the blood flow and allows them to accept nutrients faster, and get rid of waste products at the same time. Increasing lymphatic system activity and reducing excitability of nervous tissue stimulates the repair process: invisibly.

David speaks to his background with advanced non-invasive and effective alternatives to drugs and surgeries with an emotional tone.

Eliminating the middleman and costly mark-ups are trademarks to his approach, as a brand owner and manufacturer in the business of keeping pain at bay, and it isn’t an approach he takes lightly. “Net results are less pain, to get you back to your life.” Into the sea, if you were Dinesen.

Pulsed Neurocare boots are so versatile, they can be used on other areas of the body you are experiencing pain.

TheProsandCons ofEarlyRetirementPlanRollovers Shouldyouwithdrawandreinvestyourretirementplanmoney

whileyouarestillonthejob?

Did you know you may be able to take your 401(k), 403(b), or 457 plan and roll it into another type of retirement account while you are still working? Let’s look at how these rollovers can happen and the pros and cons of making them.

To start, some basics. Distributions from 401(k) plans and most other employer-sponsored retirement plans are taxed as ordinary income, and if you take one before age 59½, a 10% federal income tax penalty commonly applies. In addition, 20% of the withdrawn amount is withheld for tax purposes. Generally, once you reach age 72, you must begin taking required minimum distributions.1

Now, the fine print. You may be able to take a distribution from your qualified, employer-sponsored retirement plan while still working, via an in-service non-hardship withdrawal. This is done by arranging a direct rollover of these assets to an Individual Retirement Account (IRA) in order to potentially avoid both the 10% penalty and the 20% tax withholding in the process. It’s important to note that this option is only available if allowed by your employer.2

It may be smart to speak to your financial professional before making any changes.

Generally, distributions from traditional IRAs must begin once you reach age 72. The money distributed to you is taxed as ordinary income. When such distributions are taken before age 59½, they may be subject to a 10% federal income tax penalty.

The criteria for making in-service non-hardship withdrawals can vary. Some workplace retirement plans simply prohibit them. Others permit them when you have been on the job for at least five years or when assets in your plan have accumulated for at least two years or you are 100% vested in your account.2

Weigh the pros and cons. Who knows if your reinvested assets will perform better in an IRA than they did in your

company’s retirement plan? Only time will tell. Right now, you can put up to $7,000 into an IRA, annually, if you are 50 or older. The limit on annual additions, however, is much more impressive at $58,000 for 2021. Lastly, if your employer matches your retirement plan contributions, getting out of the plan may mean losing future matches.3

DOHENY BIKE

The Fastest Growing E-Bike Company in Dana Point

You might be surprised to learn what the country’s fastest growing industry is and it’s not RV sales, in spite of a year of lockdown. But the demand to get on the road is certainly fueling the drive toward recreational activities in North America, and e-bikes are running away with the market.

Fueled by demand from both Canada and the U.S., e-bikes are looking at an annual growth rate of close to 11% over the next few years, marching right along with a booming housing market and burgeoning infrastructure development. Targeting not only recent retirees, but enthusiasts of all ages looking to stay

active, get outside or simply prefer to tool around town on an E-bike - the evolved and infinitely more exciting electric iteration of the traditional two-wheeler.

While E-bike purveyors are seemingly on every corner, few have experienced the explosion in interest and growth locally like Doheny Bike - the fastest growing E-bike company in Dana Point.

This is perhaps due in large measure to the popularity, versatility,

utility and affordability of the company’s Fold N’ Go collection - available in a array of colors and profiles. But undoubtedly in equal measure is the mission of its co-owners - Jason Spates and Micah Meiring - to “give back to the community.”

Doheny itself boasts a robust outdoor history. Killer Dana, the aptly named freight-train-thick swell brought in surfers and developers alike. Hoping to keep the community close to the land and sea that brought it prosperity originally seemed logical for Jason, Micah and their team, working with the City of Dana Point recently to hand out 75 complimentary helmets, scooters, and skateboards. “Dana Point is an amazing community, and we want to help more kids enjoy it safely.

Doheny Bike is donating a Doheny EZ Folding bike to Pet Project’s biggest fundraiser of the year on September 19th called Pet Project Foundation: Roaring for Rescues! Proceeds will benefit the animals at the San Clemente-Dana Point Animal Shelter.

“We recognized the opportunity to give back, to contribute to our community that shaped our childhood, and it felt natural to encourage mobility and personal freedom when the pandemic had taken so much of it away.” Jason and Micah are a couple of local Dana Point dads, lucky enough to have lived near the worldfamous Doheny Beach surf spot their entire lives. “Our freedom was nearly unlimited as kids in the 1970’s and 80’s - we wanted our own kids to be as mobile as we were.”

The idea of access and freedom have long been associated with the bicycle, and Doheny Bike believes in

“It should be fun, but we’re also thinking beyond fun to community, individual expression and the ability to remain mobile.”

sending its patrons out on adventures to places unknown, where they might not have ventured before. They set out to provide an affordable solution for everyday mobility.

“With the average buyer’s budget in mind, we wanted a functional riding experience that is not trendy, awkward and limited to your hometown,” says Micah. “Creating the agility of the Fold N’ Go anywhere design, we have provided a solution to buyers that want to travel in a smaller car with electric bikes and ultimately extend their outdoor adventures.”

As parents, Jason and Micah stress the importance of safety, and encourage all riders to be over 16, along with the importance of sizing the bike

out, wearing a helmet, and meeting minimum requirements to ride the bikes safely on the road.

“It should be fun, but we’re also thinking beyond fun, to community, individual expression, and the ability to remain mobile.” On a single charge, you can ride up to 50 miles. Put a basket on the back and you’re ready for the store or farmer’s market. “I wanted something better than traffic in my car and I just knew that the options I had to help my community needed to be affordable and reliable.”

With a background in commercial truck leasing and loans, and an early pandemic ride on his nephew’s electric scooter, genius was born. “There’s something about being out in the fresh air that made a great start to the day.” The recent cycling boom couldn’t agree more.

The club’s unique video camera coverage allows parents to “check-in” on their youngsters from monitors conveniently located throughout the club.

ClubSport Aliso Viejo Orange County’s premier resort-style gym

I was chatting with a friend the other day about gyms. He was bemoaning the era of headphones: AirPods, Beats, you name it. I laughed at first because it seemed like such a funny complaint: I don’t like gyms because people wear headphones. But then it dawned on me as he continued to talk, that he was really referring to the missed sense of community he used to get when he went to the gym. Or, as he calls it still - the club. The Club isn’t gone, however. Not by a long shot. That place you could go to achieve your fitness goals or simply be well among a group of other like-minded folks? It still exists, in Aliso Viejo at ClubSport - Orange County’s premier fitness resort-style gym where “you’re more than a member, you’re a member of our family.” And the experience here is even more amazing than ever.

Group fitness classes similar to the ones you may enjoy at boutique studios can be found at ClubSport Aliso Viejo with over 70 weekly instructor-guided class options such as boxing, cycling, Pilates, yoga, Zumba, barre, aquatics, and the increasingly popular HIIT workouts using water rowers, striders, and strength-training equipment. And don’t forget the wide range of court sports including racquetball, squash, and basketball.

If you have no idea where to begin when it comes to your fitness and nutrition goals, ClubSport Aliso Viejo has that covered, too! There is a wide range of options for personal training, an immersive 8-week weight loss program called Rev32, nutritious takehome meals, and accessible advice from on-site professionals that make it easy to stay accountable to yourself.

Senior-Focused Niche Real Estate Firm

ow does life look in the seventh, eighth or ninth decade? As one enters this period of life, adorned with wrinkles, heirlooms and too much yard work, there are countless concerns to consider. Selling your home, or relying on your adult children to do so, shouldn’t be one of them.

Rob Perkins and sister Corinne Ross, founders of San Diego-based Senior Home Purchase Program (SHPP), know this all too well. After a decade of residential real estate investing, personal experience led them to the realization that the traditional home selling process

`Provides Options for Home Sellers

can be extremely overwhelming, and they saw an opportunity to remedy this situation.

“We watched our grandparents reach the point of no longer being able to live alone,” said Rob. “We saw the effort it took from our entire family to support them through the transition of selling long-time homes and lining up new residences, calling on family to become experts in real estate, organizing, cleaning and caretaking.”

“We founded SHPP in 2015 with the mission of offering seniors a simple way to transition into senior living,” said Perkins.

SHPP offers a direct purchase option, in which SHPP buys the home directly from senior homeowners, at a nominal discount, and with no fees to the seller. This allows the seller to quickly and easily transition into their next home, without any prep work, repairs, or costs.

As SHPP has become popular in the San Diego senior living community, and with recent expansion into Orange County, the company continues to evolve with market conditions. In keeping with their original mission, SHPP has launched their new listing service, Simply Sell, an “easy list and sell” option for clients

BRONWYN GORMAN | Decorating Den Interiors

Over a half-century ago, a former fabric salesman named Steve Bursten had a vision: an unparalleled interior design catalogue that would match creatives to homes across the US and Canada.

Originally known as American Drapery Consultants, Steve took his dream to the streets, and within a single year, the first franchise was born. Today, with designers scattered across the states and our neighbor to the north, Decorating Den Interiors (DDI) can tackle a single room or build an entirely new home with you. To your style, with your specifications, using the best product possible.

An expert in her field, Interior Designer Bronwyn Gorman is more than a creative mind at DDI. Bringing a treasure trove of style to the table and a pocketful of tricks and tips to build out the most “you” space possible, her methodologies are deliberate and dedicated. “I truly believe that a home should reflect the people who live in it, not the person who designed it.”

A longtime Orange County resident, Bronwyn embraces the unique lifestyle of its population, and the indoor-outdoor spaces that reflect it. Where else can you hit the waves and the ski hill in the same day?

“A house isn’t just a home, it is your refuge, your sanctuary at the end of the day, and responsible for ushering you into each new one," she says. "I want to promote health and happiness with my designs - from the ease of process to the details in your favorite room.”

Bronwyn's business, a reflection of her personal values and ideals, takes the leap from outstanding customer service into genuine respect and care for her clients. “I’m passionate and motivated to understand each individual I have the pleasure of working with." And it shows in her projects.

From bedding to window treatments, furniture to light fixtures, no detail is too small. Once a budget is reached and agreed upon, a final consultation and presentation come to life, and the design of your dreams begins to take shape. Bronwyn’s design services couldn’t be more thorough or more convenient. Because she comes to you, she is able to see the lighting and get a feel for the flow/how things work in your home.

“Feeling like you’re understood and falling in love with your space each time you walk through the door don’t have to be mutually exclusive," says Bronwyn. "It's in our attention to detail and customization that we can truly make a difference, as we can offer options and resources to create a room like no other, one that is uniquely you."

Inspirational Living at Serra Sol Memory Care Now Open in San Juan Capistrano

I was in middle school at my best friend’s house when her Dad got a call one afternoon. It was a complete stranger, albeit an incredibly friendly one, who had taken the time to sort through who my friend’s grandmother was and why she happened to be strolling up and down his street in the middle of the day. On our way over to pick her up, her Dad attempted to describe what was happening in her brain. Over dinner that night, I watched her between bites halfway expecting her to forget which utensil to use for the salad and the soup. But there, surrounded by her family at the dining table she’d eaten at a thousand times or more, she was sharp. Clear. Quick witted and lively.

Not a real specific disease, as I learned later through some of my own research, but more an umbrella covering the impairment of at least a couple of different brain functions; dementia’s group conditions affect memory loss and judgment, often the two most important pieces in the typical motions of an everyday life. Parkinson’s, Huntington’s and Alzheimer’s all snug up neatly under the umbrella, as does vascular dementia. At some point, like with my friend’s grandmother later that year, it can become necessary to offer more care than is available around the home. That’s when care in a senior living community like Serra Sol Memory Care in San Juan Capistrano becomes so vitally important.

A partnership between Protea Senior Living and Agemark Senior Livingtwo of the foremost names in senior residence care - Serra Sol Memory Care prides itself on offering “a truly inspired life” for its residents. As with all things, there are homes that feel like sterile hospitals and communities that feel like home. Serra Sol certainly falls in the latter category. Providing exceptional care is the tip of the iceberg at the new South Orange County location, and like most icebergs, the weight of their mission hovers below the surface, imbuing each day with meaning derived from little things that mean a lot. As the management company who will oversee all day-today operations, Agemark creates true communities that are warm and wel-

coming, and works diligently to give those in their care love, laughter and joy and encourages residents to live life fully - despite the challenges they face.

Renowned for turning the traditional image of an old-folks home into a passionate, engaging, mission-driven community, Agemark’s custom touches at Serra Sol include an onsite Director of Nursing, Physician oversight, assisted telemedicine appointments, balanced menus and dining services, on-site physical, occupational, and speech therapy from preferred partners, and regular communication of resident’s assessment and needs with loved ones.

My friend later shared that her grandmother’s room at the senior care residence might not have been a replica of her bedroom in the home she lived in for years, but all of the important things were there - photos, cards from the grandkids, her favorite reading chair. At Serra Sol, they understand that in addition to making sure your loved one’s health-related needs are met, equally important is the warmhearted staff who care deeply about their feelings, and the routine and familiarity of place that sparks an awareness of the positive memories they carried in with them.

As far as personalized care goes, Serra Sol has it all. In fact, through the 26

each day contribute to an elite level of service. The leadership teams are all handpicked, ensuring that each member of the staff exemplify the values they hold close: professionalism, integrity, compassion. Employees assist with daily outings and activities, customizing them to each resident’s passions and interests. From social gatherings to individual spiritual practices, crafts, baking, yoga, walking, or trips to local attractions, keeping residents motivated and excited for the day-to-day means stimulating their minds and bodies. After all, feeling engaged combats memory loss, and can even trigger new neural pathways to link old and new memory together.

Serra Sol boasts an incredibly safe and secure environment, keeping those with memory loss top of mind.

Secured entries and exits, alarm systems, and emergency call buttons complement lovely natural vegetation and water features in the residence’s secure outdoor courtyard, perfect for dining or simply enjoying an afternoon chat. Restaurant-style meals are served in a beautifully appointed dining room, and a multipurpose area serves to house crafts, cooking, games, film screenings and more. A state-of-the-art Tovertafel table features a game system providing cognitive stimulation to its players in the form of movement and interaction. Don’t miss the ice cream sundae dipping station in the dining area,

where everyone can enjoy a sweet treat. Additionally, activities and outings will be in abundance, with a Life Enrichment Coach on hand to ensure residents are able to cultivate their current interests as well as try new things.

Choose one of three floorplans, and enjoy a private or companion room. All feature en suite, private bathrooms, walk-in showers with grab bars for safety, and a bench for comfort. Storage space ensures residents can bring their favorite objects from home - making each suite a welcoming, warm respite at the end of the day.

My friend’s grandmother passed away a few years after she moved into the home, at a ripe old 93. I’m told she was surrounded every day by the comforts of her own memories until the end, and remained a hilarious, crisp fighter regardless of what came her way. I understand the perils that a disease like dementia can bring a bit better now that I’m older, but that only amplifies my gratitude for the safety and sense of community that the residents of Serra Sol Memory Care enjoy. Set the standard for care for your own loved ones, at Serra Sol.

YOUR ANNUAL NOTICE OF CHANGE

In the Medicare Insurance world we refer to it as an “ANOC” (we love using acronyms, unfortunately we’re just about the only ones that know what they mean).

If you’re currently on Medicare this applies to you if you have a Medicare drug plan or if you are enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan (HMO or PPO). This does NOT apply to your Medicare Supplement plans; such as Plan F, G, N etc.

The Annual Notice of Change is a document you receive in the mail (or online if you signed up for that) that explains the changes that your Medicare plan may have made for the upcoming year. Some changes that you would see on your ANOC are increases or decreases in your monthly premium, changes to your co-pays, deductibles, the annual out of pocket maximum and the plan’s drug formulary. (the prescription drugs that the plan gives you access to at a set copay or co-insurance amount)

You will receive your Annual Notice of Change every year around the end of September. It’s not a fancy envelope with bright red letters reading, “Open Me, I’m Important to Read” rather it’s generally printed on an inexpensive paper resembling a newspaper, and it usually reads and looks like a pamphlet. All plans have some type of change for the upcoming year. An ANOC will list 2 columns, one is what your benefit is for the current year, the other column will show what it will change to in the new year. Sometimes the change is good; a lower premium,

deductible, co-pay or maximum out of pocket known as a MOOP (see, there’s another acronym for you!)

What you want to make sure of is that you are aware and informed when the change is not good news; a higher deductible, higher co-pays or premium or MOOP. At that point, you can decide if it’s going to affect you enough to want to look at making a change to your coverage for the new year.

In the Medicare Advantage plan world, the HMO plans seem to have positive changes for the most part, but the few PPO’s out there in Orange County not so much.

The biggest offender of changes prompting people to look elsewhere is the “Stand Alone Medicare RX plans” that people who use Medicare as their primary insurance coupled with a Medicare supplement plan pay for. These plans seem to always be giving an increase to their deductible, premium and co-pay amounts. Unfortunately knowing how to go about finding the right Medicare drug plan on their own isn’t something most Medicare beneficiaries know how to do.

The good news is that I do! So, if you get surprised by your ANOC this Fall, feel free to reach out to me, I’d be happy to help you.

Diane Silverstein had never heard of the show “Absolutely Fabulous” when she named her aptly-titled gifts and décor boutique in central Huntington Beach. But the fun-loving, irreverent, blonde, champagne-promoting show does give a glimpse into what makes Absolutely Fabulous such a treasure. Absolutely Fabulous is not your runof-the-mill, Hallmark-style gift shop; they are as fun and irreverent as the show they share a name with. “We’re like family here,” glows Diane. “I give my regulars a 10% discount on everything, and we often know what they’re looking for before they do.”

The nature of gift purchasing has changed greatly since The nature of gift purchasing has changed greatly since the advent of the internet. How has Absolutely Fabulous stayed above the fray and blossomed while the rest of the gift industry flounders? “That’s easy,” responds Diane Silverstein, “quality, selection, price range, and ease of shopping.” After many visits to her “absolutely fabulous” gift and décor shop, I would have to agree. “Plus – we ship world-wide, so you can mail your stuff right from here!”

While the internet excels at making home shopping the easiest experience, when you know exactly what you’re looking for, much of holiday gift-giving starts with “who is this for, and how much do I want to spend on them?” Absolutely Fabulous makes this type of shopping easy with their “you know the personality, we know the product” approach to holiday gift-giving. “You see,” Diane explains in her charming English accent, “we spend hours and hours searching for the best new products offered in the gift industry. When our customers come in with their lists, we walk them around and point out options that our

customers would never have found in an internet search.”

Diane is not kidding on that last point. The variety and uniqueness of products at Absolutely Fabulous is astounding: hand-made jewelry, Miche Bag purses (the ones where you just drop the “insides” of your purse into a new shell, rather than having to dump all of your stuff out!), $10 silk scarves, old-school shaving kits for men, a “Daddy’s Tool Bag” that includes diaper changing equipment, and instructional DVD, face mask and other funny items, rare paintings by successful artists, large crystal chandeliers, crystal perfume bottles, stuffed animal baby bottle covers, piggy banks for kids, “dorm survival kits” for new students, wedding party gifts, rare Disney art

and collectibles, Halloween-themed decor and gifts, Christmas decorations that range from very inexpensive bottle stoppers and tree decorations to 6-foot high collectible Santa dolls. Absolutely really does cover the gamut of gifts for anyone: “from birth to death and everything in-between is our moniker” Diane proudly states. I tend to agree.

Let’s see what other people have had to say about Absolutely Fabulous (we checked their reviews): “nicest ladies

who took terrific care of me,” “Love this store. It’s amazing and wonderful to shop in.” The raves go on and on. Absolutely Fabulous is not only a local treasure, however, they have been awarded multiple national awards for her visual merchandising (did I mention that they have the best windows in the country – an honor repeatedly bestowed upon them by industry publications) and marketing. Diane was even flown to the United Kingdom by Gifts and Decorative Accessories Magazine (the leading magazine in the gift industry), put up in a hotel, and honored with the title of “VIP buyer.” “I guess they just like the selections I’ve made over the years,” Diane

humbly responds when I ask why they chose her for this honor.

So what are you waiting for? For every dollar spent at a local shop, 48% goes back into the community. If you purchase from a major, non-local, retailer, the number is 13%. For the internet - nothing (unless the business or distributor happens to be close to you, which is highly unlikely)!! This holiday season, find out why Absolutely Fabulous is so appropriately-named. Give local family businesses your time. You will find that you spend both less time and less money, all while adding to the local economy. It’s a no-brainer!

Travel Can Be Tough on Your Legs

Medical compression stockings and socks are a travel essential

Many people travel long distances and have to remain seated for two or three hours or even longer. They might not think much of it, but when movement is constrained, the blood circulation in the legs is restricted. This can contribute to heavy legs, leg pain and swollen feet and ankles.

Prolonged sitting is also a major risk factor for the development of phlebitis and Deep-vein Thrombosis (DVT). Deep-vein Thrombosis involves the formation of blood clots (thrombi) in the deep leg veins during prolonged inactivity. In some cases, blood clots

can migrate to the lungs resulting in a pulmonary embolism.

When seated without moving for a few hours – whether by plane, train or automobile - the risk of DVT could be four times higher and can happen

Tips to reducing the discomfort and risks associated with prolonged inactivity:

• Wear comfortable clothing

• Drink plenty of fluids (avoid alcohol)

• Stand up and stretch several times during travel

• Wear gradient compression legwear

to anyone during travel, regardless of age, weight or lifestyle.

JOBST™ medical compression stockings and socks are a simple and comfortable way to help avoid heavy, tired and achy legs and the swelling of feet and ankles.

Unlike the products available at your local drugstore, JOBST™ medical compression stockings and socks are recommended by physicians for their clinically proven gradient compression benefit. Medical compression products reduce swelling and helps prevent the pooling of fluid in the venous or lymph systems. The stylish cotton blend dress socks and compression hose available today increase tissue pressure to help balance the flow of fluid across the capillaries of the limb.

"Whatever your hair needs, I desire and appreciate the opportunity to make your hair dreams come true.”

Some people are born great; some people create their own greatness.

For Victoria Vannini, creating with hair and giving her clients a style that reflects their personality and ‘true self ’ is more than just a “cut and color.”

“It begins with the consultation,” says Victoria. “I want to know about your lifestyle and career. [About] the hair products and tools you use. This is essential in evaluating the condition and texture of your hair and helps us to come to a place that is realistic - at the beginning and where we want to go for the future.”

Education is an important element to Victoria’s career. After graduating from cosmetology school, Victoria continued at the Vidal Sassoon Academy in Los Angeles. While apprenticing at the Carlton Hair Salon at Crystal Court for one year, she honed her skills with creative color and hair cutting. From there, she went on to be an educator for Paul Mitchell. She currently takes classes at the Unite Academy in Carlsbad.

1. Get frequent trims - Yes REALLY... Split ends leads to your hair losing length and strength !!!

2. Resist the urge to go Blonde (unless you are a Natural). When the cuticle of the hair is damaged from bleach, you can have more breakage or split ends.

3. Distribute the Natural Oils in your Hair... Don’t overwash, once to three times a week depending on condition and age of hair. Use a Boar bristle brush to distribute your scalp’s natural oils evenly to keep hair naturally moistened.

4. Finish your Shampoo and Conditioner with a cool rinse to seal the cuticle and strengthen your hair.

5. Avoid frequent Heat (styling tools) but when you do, use a heat protectant.

6. Eat the right foods. Feed your hair from the inside by increasing your protein intake with fish, beans and nuts.

7. Take a Good Multi Vitamin Supplement and 10,000 mg. of Biotin

Complication Rates After Surgery for BPH

(Benign Prostate Enlargement): Real-World Data

A very important large clinical study was presented at the European Association of Urology 2021 Annual Meeting (EAU 2021). The findings from the largest United States analysis for treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) reveal that overall complication rates are lowest after treatment with the Urolift® System when compared to surgery and other minimally invasive procedures.

BPH RELIEF

without medications or major surgery

The study clearly demonstrates that complication rates following surgery for BPH are higher than treatment with the minimally invasive Urolift® System. Dr. Daniel Rukstalis explains the importance of this study as research in the area of surgical or minimally invasive procedures for BPH is sparse. “We found the UroLift System had the lowest overall rate of complications at 300days post-treatment,” says Dr. Rukstalis1

As an early user of the Urolift® System and a certified Urolift® Center of Excellence2, and certified instructor for the Urolift technique, I am very excited to see clinical data that confirms the excellent outcomes my BPH patients experience in my private urology practice. Treating men with BPH, also known as enlarged prostate, is a major focus for minimally invasive treatments at Pacific Coast Urology Medical Center.

Many of my patients are surprised to learn that over 40 million men in the United States are affected by BPH. This condition occurs when the prostate gland that surrounds the male urethra becomes enlarged with advancing age and begins to obstruct the urinary system. While BPH is not life-threatening, the symptoms include interrupted sleep, daytime frequent urination, leakage of urine and an urgent need to urinate. Sometimes, it’s not possible to get to the bathroom in time! Urinary problems can cause loss of productivity, depression and decreased quality of life.

While medication has been the firstline therapy for enlarged prostate

in the past, the treatment is often inadequate. Many patients do not experience adequate relief of symptoms. There are a number of side effects including, sexual dysfunction, dizziness, episodes of falling down and headaches. AND, NOW THERE IS MEDICAL DATA THAT SHOWS MEDICATION HAS BEEN LINKED TO DEMENTIA AND DEPRESSION.

When medication does not improve the quality of life for patients, the next treatment alternative often recommended by urologists is surgery. Unfortunately, surgery requires cutting, heating and/or removal of the prostate tissue to open the blocked urethra and can have numerous complications.

This large study documents that while surgical options can be effective in relieving symptoms, they can also leave patients with permanent side effects such as urinary incontinence, erectile dysfunction, and retrograde ejaculation.

With the FDA approved in-office Prostatic Urethral Lift Procedure we now have a truly minimally invasive

procedure that affords patients the relief of symptoms without the effects and complications of surgery or medications. If you’re taking a medication, you should know that Urolift is 3 times as effective as any medication for prostate growth symptoms.

The FDA-cleared Prostatic Urethral Lift procedure using the UroLift® System is a clinically proven, minimally invasive technology for treating lower urinary tract symptoms due to BPH. If you would like to treat your BPH and learn more about the UroLift® System - done in an outpatient setting without cutting, heating, or removing prostate tissue, call to schedule your consultation.

For this showcase, we asked Cheryl Turner, owner of Paris in a Cup, to share her personal vision and inspiration behind her immensely popular tea salon and boutique based in historic Old Town Orange.

Visitors to my Tea Salon frequently why I chose a French theme for my restaurant, my answer is always the same. I love all things French, especially the beautiful city of Paris. Due to an inner-ear problem, I have never been to the City of Love, so I decided to bring it stateside.

I’m a fan of old movies, so I incorporated elements from the silver screen era while designing and planning my restaurant. You’ll see touches from movies like “An American In Paris,” “Weekend At The Waldorf,” “Gigi” and more. My plan was to give my guest an escape, to be transported to another era, if only for an hour or two. Even the clock on the wall reads Paris time and you’ll find the daily Paris forecast displayed in the gift shop. If I had to describe my decorating style, I would have to say “Vintage Parisian Glamour.”

We offer our guest two experiences, shopping and dining. When you first enter, you’ll discover a little French souve-

nir shop filled with much of the same merchandise you find when you visit Paris, France. I have worked very carefully with several French Importers to assure my customer they are getting an authentic souvenir.

Our Tea Market offers our guest a sample “sniff” of every tea we carry, so you can make your tea selection before enjoying it in the salon or purchasing it to take home. You’ll find French gourmet goods, tea towels, candies, chocolates, watches and of course Eiffel Towers. French themed jewelry adorned with Eiffel Towers and fleur di lis are abundant and quite reasonably priced. We’re a great spot to find a gift for your favorite Francophile, or that hard to buy for person.

After browsing you enter our Tea Salon, deliberately separated from the shop. Once seated in the salon you’ll forget you’re in the US. Our guests are transported to another

place and time as they sit back in our cushy, European style banquettes or on one of our oversized chairs. Enjoy our French café music while dining. Close your eyes, you’re in Paris. The menu features tea fare, luncheon and tempting desserts, along with our vast tea selections menu containing 130 teas.

Throughout the year, we have many fun events and themed teas. Some of our most popular include our Meet the Author Teas, Best Friends Tea for Valentine’s Day, Little Black Dress Tea and Mother’s Day Teas. Our salon is available for bridal showers and baby showers.

If you haven’t visited us as of yet, I sincerely hope I have tempted you to drop in and say “Bonjour.” Don’t forget to take a box of our French macarons home with you. I promise you, you’ll be back for more. À bientôt!
