There are three main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Because each has many different appearances, it is important to know the early warning signs.
Look especially for change of any kind. Do not ignore a suspicious spot simply because it does not hurt. Skin cancers may be painless, but dangerous all the same. If you notice one or more of the warning signs, see a board-certified dermatologist right away, preferably one who specializes in diseases of the skin.

An actinic keratosis (AK) is a crusty, scaly growth caused by damage from exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. An AK is considered a precancer because if left alone, it could develop into a skin cancer. AKs are the product of a lifetime accumulation of UV damage and typically appear on areas most commonly exposed sun, such as the backs of the hands, forearms, face, neck, and scalp.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells arising in the epidermis, the skin’s outermost layer. SCCs often look like scaly red patches, crusty bumps, warts, or elevated growths with a central depression. SCCs may appear suddenly and some forms are tender to touch. They can become disfiguring and sometimes deadly if allowed to grow. More than 1 million cases of SCC are diagnosed each year in the U.S., which translates to about 115 cases diagnosed every hour. Incidence has increased by 200 percent in the past three decades in the U.S., and more than 15,000 Americans die each year from this type of skin cancer.

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most frequently occurring form of all cancers, with more than 4 million cases of diagnosed in the U.S. each year. BCCs may look like open sores, red patches, pink growths, shiny bumps, or scars. Any skin lesion that doesn’t heal, or bleeds with even gentle trauma, such as drying with a towel, is concerning for a BCC.

Melanoma is a very dangerous form of skin cancer. Melanoma is caused mainly by intense, occasional UV exposure (frequently leading to sunburn), especially in those who are genetically predisposed to the disease. An estimated 178,560 cases of melanoma are diagnosed in the U.S. each year and is fatal for an estimated 9,320 of these patients. Fortunately, if melanoma is recognized and treated early, it is almost always curable.
1. Everyone needs to perform a self-skin exam once a month.
2. Melanoma can appear anywhere on the skin, including the palms/soles, under your nails, and places...for most, have never seen the light of day (genitalia). For this reason, it is important to look everywhere. Lock the bathroom door, get out a hand mirror, and check, it could save your life.
3. What to look for: ABCDEs, and an ugly duckling
A - Asymmetry: If I draw a line down the middle, do the sides match?
B - Border: Is there a nice crisp border, or does the mole melt into the surrounding skin?
C - Color: Moles should be one color, one shade of brown. Is there a variety of shades or additional colors, such as black, red, white, or blue?
D - Diameter: Any mole larger than 6mm, ie the head of a pencil eraser, has a higher risk of becoming melanoma.
E - Evolution: Has it changed?
F - The Ugly Duckling Sign: Most people have a “signature mole,” their own personal mole appearance and architecture. Is there a mole that seems different from all the others?
4. Everyone needs a full body skin exam by a board-certified dermatologist once a year, more frequently if you have a family history of skin cancer, a personal history of skin cancer, or live in an area with substantial sunshine.

World-Renowned Physician Researcher Leading City of Hope Orange County Inspires Three Children to Follow His Calling
Ravi Salgia, M.D., Ph.D., Is Widely Recognized for His Exceptional, Compassionate Care
Ravi Salgia, M.D., Ph.D., a clinician scientist for more than 30 years, is an internationally renowned lung and thoracic cancer expert who leads the physician team at City of Hope Newport Beach.
Dr. Salgia’s patients describe him as a brilliant and innovative physician who exemplifies City of Hope’s hallmark compassionate care. He cares for his patients as if they are family.
“His ability to listen, to offer advice, and to simply care has been testified by countless patients, and my sisters and I have experienced all of those same attributes in our father-child relationship,” says Nick Salgia, 23, Dr. Salgia’s son.
With Father’s Day approaching, Nick and his sisters, Sabrina, 28, and Meghan, 25, explained how their dad’s love of people, science and medicine has inspired them to follow his path. All three are pursuing careers in medicine - and all are working or have worked at City of Hope, where their mother Deborah also works.
For the Salgia children, their father is an ideal mentor – not only as a worldrenowned clinical and translational scientist, but more importantly as a model of ideal clinician-patient interactions.
“My dad’s patients and his work is so meaningful to him, it’s truly his passion,” said Sabrina Salgia, who just moved back home from Oakland as she applies this cycle to medical school. “I look up to my dad in every sense and he is my ultimate role model. I fell in love with medicine from an early age.”
Sabrina completed her master’s degree in occupational therapy several years ago
and worked at City of Hope in Duarte as an inpatient occupational therapist. She’ll start working at City of Hope again in a new role this month.
The Arthur & Rosalie Kaplan Chair in Medical Oncology and Professor and Chair, Department of Medical Oncology & Therapeutics Research, Dr. Salgia is always there for his family. When Sabrina was away at school and needed him, he booked the next ticket to support her, no matter where he was in the world.
For the Salgia family, helping people is in their DNA. Deborah Salgia met her husband when she was working as an occupational therapist at Johns Hopkins Hospital, where she specialized in helping people with AIDS and with cancer. Debbie is a patient navigator at City of Hope Newport Beach and has been employed at City of Hope in Duarte the past few
“All my dad ever says is no matter what you do, find a way to help people.” - Sabrina Salgia
years as a bereavement support navigator. She also volunteers in clinics and is a certified health and wellness coach interested in survivorship.
Meghan, who is in her first year of medical school at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, spent two years completing research at City of Hope after college graduation. She moved back home because of the COVID-19 pandemic and is continuing her education virtually while volunteering with her sister to help patients and staff at City of Hope.
Growing up in the suburbs of Chicago, she and her siblings witnessed their father’s dedication to his clinics and research. He’d leave for work at 6 a.m. and when he returned after a long day would always be sure to spend quality time with the family. Even when he was traveling for work, he would call multiple times a day to check on his family.

“Seeing the positive impact he made on his patients due to his kindness, compassion, and love for science is what ultimately made me land on the career of a physician,” Meghan said. “I wanted to integrate my passion for science and medicine with the goal of helping others. My dad has had a profound impact on me, and I know his intelligence, hard
work, passion, kindness, and other wonderful traits have influenced not only me but the rest of our family, friends, patients, and colleagues. He is truly a wonderful father and doctor, and I look up to him in every way possible.”
Added Sabrina: “My dad is a brilliant man, a compassionate doctor, a lovable and loving father, a dedicated husband and my best friend. It’s a beautiful thing that my whole family has and is working at City of Hope. Every day I feel thankful and beyond blessed that I have such loving parents who give their everything to us and our community.”
Nick Salgia, who works at City of Hope as a clinical research assistant, will start medical school in August. Although he has not yet decided which medical specialty to pursue, he knows the kind of physician he wants to be.
“My goals as a physician are based on what I’ve learned from Dad – the pursuit of academic medicine and clinical research with the intention of bettering patient lives. As he’s told us countless times, ‘Everything we do as doctors is for the patient,’ Whether that be the research or the clinical care, his lessons will carry with me throughout my career and throughout my life,” Nick says.
“Thank you for everything Dad and Happy Fathers’ Day!”
City of Hope, a world-renowned research and treatment center for cancer and other life-threatening diseases, is planning to invest $1 billion to develop and operate a world-class cancer campus and network of care in Orange County. It is rare to find someone who knew their path early - by divine intervention, fate or luck. Someone whom, through circumstances beyond their control, walked into their calling and have found great success. Providence. Serendipity. Whatever you might call it, Daniel Lara is one of those lucky few. A native Southern Californian, out for the day with some friends on the Huntington Beach Pier, Lara was a recent high school graduate when he struck up a conversation with “an interesting character” - a chance encounter that would change the trajectory of his life forever.
The Hollywood stunt man Lara met that day happened to have a side job as a real estate and mortgage broker. He shared with Lara how he’d recently sold an apartment complex for $8,000,000 to a connection he’d made through a movie he'd worked on. This initial meeting led to a fledgling friendship during which the then 19-year-old's initiative and ambition so impressed his friend that he offered Lara his first job in real estate. By 23, Daniel was leading a team of loan originators. By 30, he ran a mortgage company. “Unbelievable opportunity and a ton of really hard, honest work” ensured that his experience grew exponentially in a very short time.
Lara took a small mom-and-pop brokerage in Huntington Beach and "put them on the national stage by merg-
ing with an FDIC Mortgage Bank. Most companies dream of such an opportunity - in a few years I was able to make that happen for them.” Three years ago Lara opened his own company, Regal American Mortgage in Laguna Hills, a newly developed division that he and his team have expanded to five states thus far. "Our ambition is to create a national brand that exemplifies the pride a homeowner feels when all things are right. Finances play a huge role in making that American Dream come true."
Having a dream come to fruition at such a young age, having the right person come into your life at the most opportune of times – Lara was blessed with both. While in his early twenties, he found himself uniquely positioned and eager to learn all he could from experiences with every type of lending institution - banks, lenders, brokers. Experiences and expertise that would not only serve as the underpinnings to his operational philosophy and enable his company to truly help homeowners, but would prove instrumental in Lara’s own professional success.
Having independently produced $97 million in closed transactions in 2016, Lara earned the distinction of being named to the upper echelon in his industry – among the top 200 loan agents in the nation or … 1% of the 1%. His personal production is currently approaching $1 billion, Lara
specializes in VA loans, the total of which account for 60% of his closings.
“Our ethos is ‘finance your legacy’ and I say that with extreme seriousness,” he says. "We’re not just making sure we are giving clients the best rates and lowest fees: that’s standard. We’re listening. We’re preparing our clients for a structure that they can build a life off of.”
Balancing his business on the pillars of honesty, integrity and American family values hasn’t been easy, especially in a rapidly changing environment fraught with an unforeseen pandemic and global financial crisis. “If we can set the stage for your finances to leave a legacy behind and help take care of your family, we’ve done our jobs, no matter the time it takes, or the state the world is in.” The opportunity to learn from all walks of life has given Lara and his team the ability to stay nimble, agile, especially in these trying times.
Having an old fashioned eye for customer service and hospitality helps as well. Lara can rely on his team to service their clients, and therefore, their community’s needs because he has surrounded himself with a core group of like-minded, proactive professionals. These individuals, who bring a wealth of experience to the organization - some with only three years and others 35 years’ with MS degrees in finance - “have a tremendous amount of enthusiasm for their work, and that has helped to develop momentum and unique programming over the last few years."
Lara adds that his administrative staff is "like none other I have never worked with - because they are incredibly efficient and organized they help our clients navigate the hurdles to get a loan, very very quickly. We’re on pace to break all records I’ve set in the past as a top 1% producing agent in the nation.”
One of company’s more unique offerings assists seniors who may fear that they will not be able to age in place. Financing a new home purchase or refinancing your current loan is a com-
mon product Regal American is very familiar and extremely capable in handling, negotiating a reverse mortgage (HECM loan) is entirely another type of financing for elderly clients. “I want to be creative about the solutions we are able to offer our clients, and surprise folks with an opportunity that may have previously been viewed in a negative light.” Living Legacy loans, as they are referred to in the Regal American offices, allows clients to pursue their ideal lifestyle even if retirement income may not have kept up with costs of living. Allowing homeowners to turn a portion of their home equity into cash, and forego a monthly house payment takes the pressure off of individuals, and allows seniors to write their own legacy.
I never thought I would see rates at historic lows like they are today …”
“There are so many nuances in every client’s financial life, and it takes a seasoned professional to navigate waters muddied by years of suspect business practices and preconceived notions.” There are tens of thousands of mortgage companies in the US, and competition is no less fierce in Southern California. The impact of COVID-19 has stricken many, and shifted the way we look at global and local commerce, financing our goals, causing droves to scramble to maintain a standard of living to which we were accustomed just a few short months ago. In spite of those changes, Lara believes that Orange County has a unique ecosystem, and current predictions show only a small hiccup in housing trends before the market stabilizes. Fortunate: that the pride of homeownership, median income, and overall longevity of the OC all contribute to consistently positive growth. As homeowners are quick to take advantage of low rates and qualify for the mortgages they are receiving, we should step through these trying types relatively quickly.”
“It is quite simply a perfect environment in our real estate economy,” says Dan. “Right now, we are experiencing
the highest home values paired with the lowest rates in American history. Once things begin to normalize, rates will increase, values will decrease and lenders will very likely tighten loan restrictions. All of which makes this the ideal time to finance or refinance (whether you want to take cash out to keep on hand for a rainy day, pay off credit card debt, install solar or make other desired home improvements). Don’t sit on the sidelines while the opportunity passes."
How many other companies are marching toward incoming changes instead of simply riding out the tide? With the patience to teach and the skills to execute, Regal American is a veteran at helping first-time home buyers, knowledgable refinancers or savvy investors. “When there is an opportunity to refinance and claim a better rate, we’re doing the hard work, staying ahead of the curve, and notifying our clients of market changes."
It could have been cloudy that fateful day, his friends deciding to stay indoors instead of venturing to the Pier. Lara could have still been living down the road in the city of his birth: San Clemente. But for whatever reason, that one move, one meeting, one conversation, changed Lara's trajectory by 1%, and eventually he found himself walking down a completely different path than on which he began. Regal American’s goal is to create a national brand that exemplifies the pride a homeowner feels when all cylinders are firing, when things are right, and as they should be. Finances play a huge role in making that American Dream come true. Perhaps Regal is that one move, one meeting, one conversation for you.

I love my life. I am blessed with a career that I am passionate about, a healthy family whom I love dearly, and wonderful friends who enrich my life. Life is good.
Imanage my busy life well...or at least I thought I did. A typical day in my life looks something like this:
I get myself and my family up and out the door (don’t forget to feed the dog); work all day; “John, can you leave work early and get Sam to hockey practice? Ben has a lacrosse game at 5pm tonight.”; fit in a Pilates class (Me Time!); I can’t forget to call Mom and Dad back in Michigan to see how Dad is recovering from his surgery; cheer on my boy from the bleachers; Dinner time! (thank God my husband is an amazing cook); clean up; Did I remember to send my sister-in-law a birthday card? I can always send her a funny meme on Facebook tomorrow; “Is your homework done?”; “What time is your practice tomorrow so we can all eat dinner together?”; maybe time a little TV or a chapter of a good book; “Honey don’t forget we have dinner
with the Steeles on Saturday!” Then out like a light only to start my routine over again day after day.
And then our CEO said to me, “Becky, I think you should work from home until all of this is over.” The shutdown happened and I had time. No more sports or practices, no dinner with friends, no lunch dates or Friday drinks with co-workers.
I’ve used this time as a gift; my reflection has helped me see that too often my focus was on getting through the day, the week, the month rather than living in the moment - my moment - as messy as it can be at times.
I’ve been practicing finding meaning in moments of my every day. It’s a deeply personal and individual journey. I cannot write a prescription for meaning making. There is no right
or wrong way and no “one-size-fitsall” approach. You have to create it for you, and I have to create it for me.
In my line of work, being present is something I practice daily. Coming alongside the grieving requires it. One thing I’ve realized about myself is how often I am connected to others through service. When I serve, I connect and that brings me immense joy. The past several weeks has forced me to find new ways to connect and has allowed me live more intentionally.
I’ve stopped comparing my life to others. I practice gratitude, even in the midst of heartache and struggle. I take in the moment, purposely connecting to my surroundings. I continually define my purpose, examining my passion to live for what is bigger than myself. I’m learning to be okay with everything in my life not being okay. I try to tune out distractions that keep me from connecting and rob me of time better spent.
It’s not about having everything figured out; it’s about examining my choices and being ok with my answers. It’s about finding what matters most to me. It’s about waking up each morning with a determined focus to live my very best life, despite illness, sorrow, loss, and hardship.
It’s your turn... what can you do to lead your best life? I sure hope you give it a try.

Operating honestly and with integrity has served as the foundation for the continued success of the Laguna Niguel-based South Coast Shutter and Shades for over 32 years. Owners Tom and Donna Schuster launched their own company after realizing that “on our own we would be able to offer quality products in an honest environment to our customers, as well as servicing the products we sell.”
Specializing in custom shutters, blinds (mini, faux, wood, vertical), cellular shades, woven woods, plantation and security shutters and everything in between, Tom and Donna offer free in-home consultations for design as well as measuring, they always include free professional installation and prefer to bring all of the samples to each client’s home to go over the assorted styles and many color options to suit each home’s interior and its homeowner’s unique lifestyle.
“We listen to you and then incorporate your ideas with ours to design your custom shutters, blinds or shades,” says Tom. “Our portfolios and samples are very extensive, so you will be able to envision how your windows are going to look when complete."
Tom and Donna, credit their success to date to the quality of customer service they and their team give their customers, which in turn creates a wonderful repeat and referral business. “Although there may be providers of similar products, there is no one that can match our superior customer service – from showing up on time, making precise measurements and flawless installations - and with a professional ‘can do’ attitude,” says Donna.
Tom adds that “our pricing with unbeatable discounts, sales support and the fact that we offer our customers an in-house design team at no additional charge is the first step in setting us apart from our competition. I am proud to say that we have built a reputation in the business for having the highest quality, best beauty, fit and finish and value available. All of our products come with a lifetime warranty.”
A 5-Star Yelp rated company, South Coast Shutter and Shades boasts scores of glowing testimonials online, including Debora R of Laguna Niguel who writes "Donna and Tom are amazing! Great products, great prices, great service.I've used them twice for two different businesses and I could not be happier. Donna makes suggestions based on what I tell her

my needs are and she has been spot on with her recommendations. Installations by Tom are quick and easy. Highly recommended!"
Another reviewer, Doug W. of Mission Viejo posted that "From the first call, I knew I was dealing with a reputable, experienced, HONEST company. Donna and Tom are absolute PROS and obviously take pride in their work … Their price was very competitive. Also, what they quote is what you pay - keep that in mind when talking to the "other guys" whose price seems to go up and up. All appointments including install were FAST. The installation was flawless. I had a question later that evening about my motorized shades and they called me back IMMEDIATELY. My impression is that I could call them 5 or 10 years from now and they would just as helpful."

Here is an UPDATED list of my most recent thoughts and new tax law guidance. The focus is on how to navigate the new government programs and ways to gain access to your funds in a strategic manner. Please share these concepts with your friends and family. We can help you implement and understand your unique situation if you get scheduled in for an appointment. Access to information is available…however, it takes a professional with experience to interpret, direct and provide perspective on these changes to provide clarity, calmness and a path to success.
1. If you have applied for and received your Payroll Protection Program (PPP) loan, you now need to track the eight week period after receipt of the funds. Tracking your use of funds and related expenses determines if all or part of the loan will be forgivable. Any amounts forgiven will not be taxable income by the IRS. However, California has not determined if such amounts will be taxable or tax-free. Estimate your Loan Forgiveness at that following link: https://www.adp.com/contact-us/ customer-service/paycheck-protection-program/ppp-loan-forgiveness-estimator.aspx.
2. At the end of the eight (8) week period, all PPP loan recipients will need to complete a Loan Forgiveness Application and submit it to their lender. The SBA just issued the application and instructions which can be obtained at https://home.treasury.gov/system/files/136/3245-0407-SBA-Form-3508-PPPForgiveness-Application.pdf.
3. The PPP Loan Amount is based upon 2.5 months (around 10 weeks) of costs; however, the forgiveness amount is based upon only 8 weeks of costs. Therefore, it is possible that two weeks or 20% of your loan will not be forgiveable. Some planning and analysis may make all of your loan forgiveable.
4. Presently, there are no additional funds for additional PPP loans. Consideration should be given to exploring and filing for Unemployment Benefits. All California workers started receiving an additional $600/week through 7/31/2020 on top of their regular unemployment benefits beginning with the week ending 4/11/2020. Visit https://edd.ca.gov/ about_edd/coronavirus-2019/pandemic -unemployment-assistance-htm.
5. The SBA issued safe harbor guidance for loans under $2 million. These borrowers will not have to provide a certification of the necessity of their loan request.
6. Refunds of educational/college expenses can be “recontributed” back to your 529 account by 7/15/2020 to avoid taxation and penalties on the gain previously removed.
7. A $5,000 penalty-free withdrawal from an eligible retirement plan for the birth or adoption of a child after 12/31/2019.
8. If you are forced to access your IRA or pension account, new rules are in place so you can avoid the IRS 10% premature penalty if you are under age 59.5 as a Coronavirus Related Distribution.
Pension plan loans have now been increased from a maximum of $50,000 up to the lesser of $100,000 or your plan balance. The 3 year loan payment schedule starts on the day after the distribution was received.
9. For Sole Proprietors and Business Owners: Contact us to see if we can help you access these pension loans by transferring your IRA accounts into a newly created pension plan account. Remember, a loan might be more beneficial than a taxable IRA distribution especially since you are paying the interest into your own pension account.
10. Visit the IRS website at www.irs.gov to click on “Get Coronavirus Tax Relief”. Get answers to the Economic Impact Payments ($1,200 for adults and $500 for children) including a link to “Check your payment status”. These stimulus payments are not taxable by the IRS or CA.
11. Consider funding tax-deductible IRA and pension contributions for tax year 2019 when you are in a higher tax bracket. You can always distribute these funds via a taxable distribution or a loan at a lower tax bracket, if applicable, in tax year 2020. IRA and H.S.A. contributions must be made by July 15th and pension contributions by the extended deadline for the return.
12. Individuals with a Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) from their IRA or pension account can skip the distribution for tax year 2020. Additionally, new rules allow individuals who have already taken their 2020 RMD to roll the money back into the account within 60 days of the distribution to eliminate the taxable event and allow your money a chance to rebound from the recent market decline. If the distribution was made April 1st or later, you now have until July 15th to roll your money back. You need to notify your advisor or the brokerage firm if you do not want to take your RMD since many are set up to payout automatically.

Some things in life are better when combined with other things. Peanut butter is great, but better with jelly. S’mores are wonderful, but somehow tastier when eaten next to a campfire. Mobile phones are indispensable, but incrementally improve with every added app. This idea holds true with financial advice as well. CPAs and financial advisors are important and valuable resources in their own respects toward ensuring a sound financial future, but they’re even better when they’re both the same person.
The reason for this is simple; sound investment advice must be done with consideration of tax implications, as the cost of not doing so can be significant. Likewise, good tax planning often involves taking advantage of investment opportunities that become evident during the tax preparation process. Only the CPA Financial Advisor can ensure that these interdependent objectives are executed on successfully
According to a study involving 42,000 advisors by Envestnet, a leading investment platform provider, the “value added” of using a financial advisor is roughly 2% per year. The added value of a CPA/tax management is another 1% per year. The study breaks down the added value coming from 5 core areas:

The following highlights more tangibly describe how the value of a CPA financial advisor can enhance your financial plan.
Tax Savings = Enhanced Investment Returns
When considering the financial plan for one’s entire life, one should make tax savings as much of a priority as the selection of investment and retirement products. Tax savings simply can have too tremendous a positive impact on maximizing your retirement nest egg to ignore. And its importance and value generally increases proportionally with your marginal tax rate. This is especially true today, given the generally rich valuations and low yields of most traditional investment options.
As the value of your taxable investments grow, so does the importance of utilizing tax management to minimize taxes. Whereas many financial advisors may list these offerings, you can count on the CPA financial advisor to ensure that tax management is being performed.
High Frequency of Interaction = Better Financial Maintenance
Another important ingredient to a sound financial plan is maintenance. Financial plans are snapshots in time that require

periodic updates. Long-term impacts of near-term events such as career, family and preference changes need to be incorporated into the plan when they occur. So, frequency of interaction is paramount to good maintenance. And here again, the tax professional is, unfortunately like taxes, with you year in and year out. Hence, maintenance of a financial plan by a CPA financial advisor is a natural fit.

When I was younger, my Mom loved to read me the book “If You Give A Mouse A Cookie.” The plot essentially revolves around an ever-growing list of to-do’s that had to be accomplished, all set into motion by the simple act of giving a mouse a cookie. This tale came back to me recently when I purchased a new television at Best Buy.
What was a simple shopping trip ended up being an adult’s version of that circular tale. If you give a grownup a television, they’ll have to measure their wall. When they measure the wall, they’ll realize they may actually
have room for a bigger television. When they buy the bigger television, they’ll find out they have no idea how to mount it to the wall. When they start mounting it to the wall, they’ll see that the power outlets are all in the wrong places. When they realize
the outlets need to be moved, they’ll call an electrician. (This could go on forever.)

And on the home entertainment front … when you started planning for your ultimate home theater set-up and sound system, could you find the right media cabinetry for your particular space – cabinetry that wouldn’t catch on fire from the heat of the equipment, or that would simply look good in the room? Did you understand half of what the televisions, receivers and other devices could

do, and did you have anyone to hold your hand to make sure you weren’t overspending for what you wanted?
Big box retailers, the professed champions of value, are happy to sell you any home theater and sound equipment you think you might like,
and send you off to figure it out at home. That’s what they do. And that’s all they do.
If you want the home theater system that you envision, seek the services of Skip Myers and his team of experienced professionals at ReelTime to take you from start to finish for the home theater or sound system of your dreams.

“Usually there is a part of the job that you find you just can’t do by yourself,” says Skip, who has overseen the design and installation of thousands of home theater and sound systems over the course of 40-plus years in the business. “You get your brand new television home, you’re so excited, then you realize you need to move an outlet or none of the cabinets you can find will fit your space. We’re here to make sure you get the equipment that will give you what you want and the system that will work with that equipment, without leaving you to fend for yourself.”

We’re here to make sure you get the equipment that will give you what you want and the system that will work with that equipment, without leaving you to fend for yourself.
Skip opened the doors at ReelTime in 1983. Today, the technicians and designers that Skip assigns to clients are all ReelTime employees, knowledgeable in all home theater and sound technologies. First, they work closely with you to determine what you’re looking for. Then they custom design every aspect of the project, from wiring to custom-built cabinets, frames, or built-in wall designs. Finally, licensed, in-house contractors install your entertainment system with care and precision.
There are a couple of things that people may not think about when they embark upon the road to their own home entertainment system.
“You need to think about your home theater goals,” says Skip. “You don’t have to do everything at once – you can do it bit by bit – but if you know where you’re going, you’ll save money and when it’s all said and done, you’ll have exactly what you want and what you will actually use. We’re here to help you determine your goals.”
Skip is also an advocate for getting what you’ll use, which is part of the design and planning process.
“You can buy everything you want to, but if you can’t operate it, what’s the point?” he says. “There’s the television, DVD and Blue-ray; there’s the receiver, there’s Apple TV… it’s all great, but how do you get them to work together? We’re big advocates of the universal remote. Not everyone knows how to get the most out of their systems with one powerful remote – they’re not expensive, but the best ones are computer-based. We’ll set that up for you so you’re getting the most out of your custom system.”
It’s easy to assume that personal service is expensive, but a conversation with Skip and the experts at ReelTime is free. Ultimately, in planning your purchases for the right outcome, you’re likely to save money while avoiding chilling setbacks. The only chilling you want to be doing is in front of your fantasy home theater system.

“People ask us all the time what we specialize in,” says Diana. “‘Life’ is what we respond with. We want to be there for you and your family every step of the way, from preschool portraits, to beach days, to weddings and pets. Private homes, debutante balls and birthdays for ages 1-101!”
By Jody Robinson
I was at a retail store the other day, when a group of tourists asked me to take a photo of them in front of the window display - an incredible arch made solely out of the pages of reclaimed books from a library that had mostly burned down. An ode to what had been once. The photo? An ode to an ode. We’ve all heard the saying, “a picture is worth 1,000 words.” How many words are your memories worth? Diana and Scott Schmitt believe that those photos, those odes, are priceless. At the San Juan Capistrano-based Accent Portraits by Diana and San Juan Photo & Digital, the couple have devoted the last three decades to taking and developing memories for their customers.
Giving clients the best quality covers much more than a simple photo. Using a lifetime of skills, Diana and Scott set out in 1989 to get each client the product they wanted. With each person’s shifting needs come the full range of services that Accent Portraits and San Juan Photo & Digital can provide: $30 specials, a birthday club, portrait memories in a fun, easy fashion. “We’re like a family here. We are taking photos now of kids whose parents came in to see me almost thirty years ago!”
Thirty years ago, not many could predict that film photography would

almost go extinct. The rise of the digital age overwhelmed analogue, nearly to the point of no return. Yet, many amateur and professional photographers still swear by oldfashioned chemistry. The new problem? Almost nobody develops photos anymore. Short on your own dark room like the rest of us? Luckily, the wide range of services Diana and Scott offer covers everything from film to phones - and has been busy uniting the digital and analogue worlds for its customers in a fun, easy fashion. “We’re still the only lab that processes film,” says Scott, “and it’s making a huge comeback. Everyone has photos on their phones that would otherwise never be printed. San Juan Photo to the rescue!”
The last man standing, as it were, Accent Portraits and San Juan Photo & Digital are out to change the photography game entirely. Not just film, or portraits, or product development. “It isn’t just better services: it’s better service.” Cheryl Wayland, long-time employee and staple of the South County shop, knows the name and story behind almost every client Scott and Diana have.
“We take care of our own here,” says Diana. “That means free portraits for seniors at the community center each year, donated portrait certificates to each charity and school that asks, and free event coverage for animal rescue organizations. It’s good for everyone.” While Diana and Scott have plenty to do in their free time, from walking the family dog to riding horses, the real hobby lies in the time they dedicate to each client that walks in their doors.
But being award-winning photographers and the developers of quality photos at an award winning custom lab isn’t where the fun stops with Diana and Scott. That joy you felt when you developed a roll of film after a family vacation? Could you describe that feeling, those memories with 1,000 words? You could certainly try. Or, you could make some new memories, and experience that feeling again and again and again, simply by walking into Accent Portraits and San Juan Digital Photo & Digital.

Regardless of whether the threat is a simple cold or the flu, or Covid-19, there are several things you can do to protect yourself from unnecessary downtime.
This gets top billing because of its true effectiveness in preventing illness. The most important aspects of hand washing are the length of time (at least 20 seconds) and the amount of friction you use, not the water temperature. In fact, warm water is better than hot, as hot water dries the skin, leaving more microscopic openings on its surface. In cases where hand washing is not practical, keep hand sanitizer available. Alcohol-based hand sanitizers can also contribute to drying of the skin, so be diligent about moisturizing.
Staying well hydrated clearly benefits our skin, the largest organ of our immune system. The advice to stay adequately hydrated is even more important in the cold, dry months of winter.
A balanced diet, which includes all food groups, gives your immune system the resources it needs when it faces a challenging virus.
Research continues to prove how vital this is to every part of our well-being. It affects everything from our ability to resist illness to managing weight.
It is important to keep your hands away from your face-particularly the eyes, mouth, and nose, which are favorite points of entry for viruses. Start paying attention to how frequently you touch your face. Break the habit, and you could reduce your risk of colds and flu this season by more than 50 percent.

"Whatever your hair needs, I desire and appreciate the opportunity to make your hair dreams come true.”
Some people are born great; some people create their own greatness.
For Victoria Vannini, creating with hair and giving her clients a style that reflects their personality and ‘true self ’ is more than just a “cut and color.”
“It begins with the consultation,” says Victoria. “I want to know about your lifestyle and career. [About] the hair products and tools you use. This is essential in evaluating the condition and texture of your hair and helps us to come to a place that is realistic - at the beginning and where we want to go for the future.”
Education is an important element to Victoria’s career. After graduating from cosmetology school, Victoria continued at the Vidal Sassoon Academy in Los Angeles. While apprenticing at the Carlton Hair Salon at Crystal Court for one year, she honed her skills with creative color and hair cutting. From there, she went on to be an educator for Paul Mitchell. She currently takes classes at the Unite Academy in Carlsbad.

1. Get frequent trims - Yes REALLY... Split ends leads to your hair losing length and strength !!!
2. Resist the urge to go Blonde (unless you are a Natural). When the cuticle of the hair is damaged from bleach, you can have more breakage or split ends.
3. Distribute the Natural Oils in your Hair... Don’t overwash, once to three times a week depending on condition and age of hair. Use a Boar bristle brush to distribute your scalp’s natural oils evenly to keep hair naturally moistened.
4. Finish your Shampoo and Conditioner with a cool rinse to seal the cuticle and strengthen your hair.
5. Avoid frequent Heat (styling tools) but when you do, use a heat protectant.
6. Eat the right foods. Feed your hair from the inside by increasing your protein intake with fish, beans and nuts.
7. Take a Good Multi Vitamin Supplement and 10,000 mg. of Biotin LOOK FOR

Mission Viejo Wigs is truly a family business. Not in the traditional sense, where its owners and operators share the same genes. But rather in such a way that every person who has walked through Owner Betty Darroch’s doors in the 30+ years she has been in operation immediately felt like a member of Darroch’s extended family.
As a professional hair and wig stylist since 1962, Betty began her career at CBS where her résumé reads like a celebrity screenplay starring the coifs of a veritable “who’s who” of Hollywood: Ann Margaret, Carol Lawrence, the Midnight Specials and the Sonny & Cher Show. She went on to work for the Hallelujah Hollywood Show at the MGM Hotel in Las Vegas.
But it wasn’t until she opened her own business in Mission Viejo that she felt as though she were “truly doing God’s work.”
Her clients today include people who are experiencing hair loss due to chemotherapy treatment, alopecia or other medical conditions. Betty specializes in wigs, hairpieces and toupees for women, men and children and carries only the highest quality brands. Each wig or hairpiece is custom fit to the client for the most natural look and feel – no one will know you’re wearing a wig unless you tell them.
received many compliments on her “new do” and no one was the wiser.
It’s been over nine years since my mother completed treatment and is now leading a cancer-free life. Although her own hair has long since grown back, she still often prefers to wear Betty’s wigs on “bad hair days.”
Thank you Betty!

“Hair loss, whether it is the result of illness, the aging process or heredity, can be a traumatic and emotionally draining experience,” says Betty. “We work with people on a daily basis who are facing the issue of hair loss for the first time. Our goal is to help you find the solution that works best for you and do so in a caring way that makes you realize that you are not alone.”
There are wonderful testimonials from longtime customers on her web site (missionviejowigs. com), but for me, the best testament to Betty’s genuine, caring nature came from a source closer to home.
When my mother was diagnosed with lung cancer six years ago, there were so many aspects of what she was facing - including the side effects associated wit chemotherapy treatment – that were out of our control. But my mother’s appearance was something she felt she could dictate. We knew she would lose her hair, but she was determined not to “look like a sick person.”

From the moment my mother met Betty, she knew she had found the right place and more importantly, the right person to help her. Betty shared so many stories of survival – of longtime customers and friends who fought a similar battle and won. Her warm embrace and inspired hope and help steel her resolve to maintain a positive, fighting attitude when she was diagnosed with lung cancer.
The wig Betty selected was the perfect color and style for my mother’s face (and head) shape. The wig was so natural looking that my mother

Rick is a fun and playful kitty who is just so interesting to watch. About one year old, Rick loves to spend his time playing with toys and exploring his surroundings. My sister was hit by a snowboarder when she was sixteen. On skis, just a couple of turns from the bottom of the hill - in plain sight of a SLOW sign. The snowboarder was young; not as young as my sister, but still, a young man. My parents, long-time skiers, contacted him directly, trying to see if they could get any results at all: any reparations for their high-school sophomore, laid up on the couch for innumerable weeks. There was nothing they could do. I remember feeling helpless as a child, watching the entire drama unfold. I can’t imagine what my parents must have felt. No one could help. No loopholes. No empathy, from anyone else involved.
There is a longstanding joke in the mainstream media that all lawyers are snakes. The word attorney no longer brings to mind the grainy black and white image of Gregory Peck defending the downtrodden as Atticus Finch. Certainly, in some cases, the joke must contain some shred of truth. But at Allen, Flatt, Ballidis & Leslie, the welcoming, family-like environment they’ve curated isn’t too far off from the home ambience of the fictional Finch family. Folks who actually want to do good in the world. Right wrongs. Obtain real results.
Suzanne Leslie is a managing partner and attorney at Allen Flatt for more than 30 years, and prides herself on
the reputation they have built. “Our years of experience have given us more knowledge in the personal industry field than other law firms can claim. What sets us apart is exactly as our tagline says: experience, compassion, results.”
As a firm, Allen Flatt have helped many families through the emotional trauma of a great many personal injury cases. Though they have attorneys that focus on estate planning, preparing wills, trusts, and contest matters, personal injury hits the closest to home. “We care about our clients, and our primary focus is to help them deal with the difficulties of being involved in an accident- be it pedestrian accident, automobile accident, slip and fall, or dog bite.” Handling the claims process for their clients lets them pursue their medical recoveries in peace, unlike my sister, or my parents. Fighting a losing cause often takes more energy than simply healing - or letting someone else rest, to do battle with their own body and take the necessary steps to get back to normal: whatever the new normal looks like.
Offering a free consultation, with the promise that no recovery means no fee, attorneys like Suzanne offer their services on a personal level. “I started
out in the personal injury field to help people. I want to make sure my clients feel taken care of through every second of their claim.” Recognized by the American Institute of Personal Injury Attorneys and the National Association of Professional Women, Ms. Leslie has recovered millions of dollars for clients and thousands of settlements for clients.
“Everyone in the firm shares compassion for the clients more than on a business level, and many of us have had first hand personal experience in what they may be going through,” she says.
As a leader in her field, it is imperative to stay abreast of the newest strictures and developments in insurance law. The more she knows, the better her chances of winning your case. Atticus Finch would probably tell you that winning isn’t everything. But sometimes, to folks like my parents, to whom winning would mean seeing my sister get the reparations for her accident paid out, and letting her find her way back to walking again, winning is the only thing.
For more information on what Suzanne and her associates can do for you, call (949) 752-7474, or email contactus@allenflatt.com.

During this time of staying indoors and not being able to live our lives in the normal ways, meditation can help ease anxiety, lower stress levels, and bring some peace in an otherwise uncertain situation.
People who meditate regularly appear internally and externally five to 10 years younger than their non-meditating peers, according to author Deepak Chopra. That's good news for the estimated 10 million people who practice meditation on an ongoing basis and experience the resulting calm it cultivates.
The rich benefits come from doing something that looks like nothing: Sitting still, being quiet, and breathing deeply. Meditation works simply but profoundly by defusing the onslaughts of life - a racing mind, busyness, deadlines, commutes, all of which have physiological effects on well-being. Meditation calms the nervous system, decreases metabolic rate, heart rate, and blood pressure, and lowers levels of cholesterol, stress hormones, and free radicals. It also has a direct effect on breathing, slowing and deepening respiration so more oxygen circulates throughout the body. Not only that, meditation is said to lessen feelings of anxiety and depression and improve memory and concentration. And all of this culminates in slowing the aging process, as Chopra notes.
There are many meditation techniques, including focusing on a
mantra, a sacred word or phrase, or your breath. But the basic intent of all meditation is focus and attention. And it doesn't take hours a day in an ashram to meditate effectively. Benefits kick in with even a short period of devoted time.
How to begin? Wear comfortable, unrestrictive clothes, sit on a cushion or chair with your back straight (think once again, comfort), rest your hands on your legs, let your eyes go soft and out of focus or close them, breathe slowly and deeply, and - the hardest part - attempt to empty your mind of thoughts and quiet the internal dialogue. When thoughts flit through your mind, let them pass without judging them and come back to your focus (your mantra, counting, etc.) and breathing.
Start with this sitting meditation technique for five minutes a day, and add on time as you get more at ease with the process. For more information on techniques and benefits, check out www.abc-of-meditation.com.

The primary purpose of diabetic socks is to keep your feet dry, decrease your risk for foot injury and avoid preventing or slowing blood circulation. The difference between diabetic socks and regular cotton socks is that they are usually are made of materials that wick away moisture, are fitted, padded and are non-binding.
Because people with diabetes are at higher risk of foot injuries and infection due to damage to their circulatory and nervous

systems caused by high blood sugar levels, they would benefit from wearing diabetic socks.
Nerve damage, or neuropathy, decreases sensation and increases risk of injury, particularly on the bottom of the feet and can also cause people with diabetes to be unaware of an injury and delay treatment. Circulatory problems also make it harder for wounds to heal.
For these reasons and more, proper foot care is critically important for people with diabetes and diabetic socks are designed with these specific issues in mind.

• Look at and touch your feet everyday
• Keep your feet clean and dry
• Cut or file toenails with the shape of the toe, smoothing all sharp edges
• Moisturize dry skin with a lotion
• Avoid injury to the feet. Have corns, calluses or ingrown toenails treated by a professional
• Wear well-fitting, soft leather or fabric shoes
• Check shoes daily for cracks, pebbles, or other things that might damage your feet
• Get your blood glucose under control
• Wear well-fitting socks, without a thick toe seam, made of material that wicks moisture away from skin
Be aware of:
• Changes in skin color or temperature
• Swelling in the foot or ankle
• Pain in the legs
• Open sores on the feet that are slow to heal
• Ingrown toenails or toenails infected with fungus
• Corns/calluses/ bunions
• Dry cracks in the skin, especially around the heel
If you have a foot problem that is slow to go away or continues to get worse, contact a healthcare professional immediately.

My grandparents owned a beautiful three bedroom casita in Solana Beach. Just up the road from the train station, their home was built in the twenties, and renovated completely when I was in high school. When my grandfather passed away, I moved in with my grandma, doing chores around the house for her and helping to maintain the garden. One day, I was looking for my grandfather’s whetstone, to sharpen an old pair of shears, and I stumbled across his Colt Python 357 Magnum. I had to look it up - I thought it might be a relic from one of the movies he worked on in the 50’s, but according to my grandma, it was just “one of those things your grandpa just insisted on having.”
Jeff McCabe has gotten more of his fair share of calls from people like myself, who accidentally come across family firearms in their home and don’t have the first idea of what to do with them. The owner of California Gun Services, Jeff is in the business of safe gun storage, ownership and disposal. The first step? Following California gun laws. I had zero clue that by driving the Colt to the Army Navy to try and turn it in I’d be breaking a couple laws. According to Jeff there are laws restricting gifting or selling a gun, receiving a gun, borrowing a gun, transporting a gun, even storing guns. New laws come out every year, and it is almost impossible for anyone, even aficionados to keep up with them. Jeff and his team work closely with local law enforcement to ensure the process is easy and safe.
My grandma hadn’t touched the revolver in years, though my grandfather had made sure she shot it at some canned tomatoes on a desert trip when they were younger. “I’m afraid the grandkids might find it,” she told me that day. “I’d feel safer without it.” A sentiment shared by Jeff’s friends, family and fellow church parishioners - many of whom have sought his assistance over the years to ensure the proper storage or disposal of firearms they found themselves in possession of upon the passing of a loved one.
What initially started as a favor for a friend has grown into a bonafide side business as word has spread about Jeff’s particular skill set and confidence in handling firearms. As the owner of the Orange-based One Way Painting, Jeff often encountered situations whereby he would come across a firearm when moving furniture around for a client prior to starting a painting project. “Many times, the firearm belonged to my client’s father, grandfather or late husband and she never touched it because she was afraid of guns, but didn’t know how to get rid of it safely. So many times these guns are loaded and just stuck in a nightstand or stored under the bed.”
Raised in a family that had firearms for hunting and sporting, Jeff was taught early on how to handle, be respectful and always be safe when handling firearms. I believe that we as Americans have a great privilege to be able to own a firearm, but with that comes an even greater responsi-

bility to not only protect ourselves legally by complying with Federal and State laws, but to protect ourselves, our neighbors and most importantly, our children from all possible dangers associated with firearms.”
San Clemente resident Rhonda Murphy couldn’t agree more. “There are many things to deal with when a loved one dies. In 2010, when cleaning out my husband’s closet, I came across several of his guns. I didn’t want to keep them and was unsure of what to do with them. My daughters didn’t want the guns and I didn’t want to deal with the hassle of storing them as my grandkids are often at my house. A friend suggested I should call Jeff. He was very nice, easy to talk with, trustworthy and knowledgable. He came to my house, checked all the guns to make sure they were unloaded and removed them. Jeff also told me that one of the guns was a collector’s item and was able to sell it for me. One less thing to have to worry about. I can’t recommend Jeff enough.”
As part of their auditing procedures, California Gun Services gives clients the option of a Voluntary Registration Form (in the case where the weapon was inherited). Many of Jeff’s clients are like my grandma who just prefers that the gun is destroyed. Jeff holds a Federal Firearm License and as such, is able to take possession of firearms without a Gun Transfer. He can also inspect firearms to ensure they are still in working order, and even tell you if the gun, or guns, you have are California Compliant.
“Most people are unaware that firearms that were purchased legally from a gun shop just a year ago may now be illegal in California,” says Jeff. “If we find a firearm that is out of compliance with the law, you’ll receive solid advice on how to make it compliant, sell it out of state, or potentially dispose of it. Our process is approved and certified by local law enforcement, it’s legal, safe and adheres to all state and federal firearms laws.
“Since firearms last more than a lifetime, families often have small and large collections of guns in their home. Knowing what you have and what to do with those firearms is important. Whether it’s from a death in the family, inheritance, or just a need for clearing out some that you know you will never use, we can help. Following California gun laws is essential. We come to you. It’s a safe, easy and professional process.”

California Gun Services’ processes are approved and certified by local law enforcement and adheres to all state and federal firearms laws for the following services:
Jeff will come to you and inspect your firearms to make sure they are in proper working order and that they are California Compliant. If your firearm is not compliant with the California Law, you will receive solid advice on how to make it compliant or possibly dispose or sell it out of state.
If a firearm is found to be unsafe to use, cannot be repaired and has no historical value. California Gun Services will permanently destroy it by torching the receiver or frame into three parts or cutting it with a saw into five parts. Jeff will document this with photos and log it for the Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and email you the proof of destruction.

Private Party Transfers happen between two individuals and will need to take place at a Federal Firearm Licensed Dealer. Since this needs to be done at a Gun Shop, Jeff cannot offer this as an in-home service. If you have inherited or legally obtain a firearm, he can provide you with a Voluntary Registration form or you can download it from the California Department of Justice which is NOT required to do at a gun shop. California Gun Services has a Federal Firearm License and can legally come to you and take possession of a firearm without a Gun Transfer.
California Gun Services will come to you and appraise a single gun or an entire collection of any size. You will receive an explanation of how guns are legally sold and transferred. California Gun Services can then make you a fair market value offer and/or explain how a gun can be put up for sale on consignment.
To connect with Jeff directly, call (714) 639-9608 or for more information, visit CaliforniaGunServices.com.

California Gun Services will make sure you are using the right ammunition for the firearms that you have and that it is legal in the State of California. Jeff will inspect the ammunition to make sure that it has been stored correctly, is in good condition and will ensure that the ammunition is being stored properly, using the right type of container and stored in the right location in your home.

Classy Closets’ unique, custom solutions for the home and office can instantly double or even triple your storage space.
Closet organization is something of an oxymoron at my house. Same goes for my home office. I actually do know where everything is in the stacks of paper that perpetually reside atop my desk, but good luck having anyone else make rhyme or reason of my filing “system.”
I’m clearly a candidate for the handiwork of a company like Classy Closets – if it’s a matter of function or simply
a desire to have your mess aesthetically addressed, Classy Closets will customize your work/life space with made-toorder cabinetry and organization systems for your home office, garage, bedroom, laundry room, pantry, media centers, wallbeds and more.
Think you can’t afford to bring in the professionals? Classy Closets, which has served all of Orange County and

San Diego since 2003, offers organization options for virtually every budget – from basic white melanine to solid wood cabinetry.
“Nothing we do is cookie cutter,” says Company CFO Gary Pavitt. “Although Classy Closets is a franchise, we’re not governed by the rules that typically dictate processes of typical franchise operations – particularly with regard to the materials and mounting systems we use. What works in terms of style and function at a home in Tucson, for instance, wouldn’t necessarily translate to a house in Huntington Beach. So we have the freedom to customize our work to our client’s specific needs and desires.”

Another differentiator is that Gary and his team manufacture their products right here in Southern California, which affords them the ability to offer their clients a broader range of product options at a level of quality that is “second to none.” And because they are “hands-on” from design consultation to manufacture and installation, Gary and his staff pride themselves on providing unparalleled customer service.
“What’s really fun is having the ability to create the products in-house,” says Gary. “I really enjoy introducing new ways to make things better, bringing in new products and keeping up with the latest trends in the industry. We go out of our way to keep our customers satisfied … that’s what makes it all worthwhile. As in any business, your customers are golden and we’ve been very fortunate that a large percentage of our business is in referrals.”
Repeat customers Marta and Mike Fowler of San Diego say that Classy

Closets is a “dream company - one that not only delivers beautiful craftsmanship, but also that elusive quality of excellent service. Every good cliché regarding their work applies.”
“This is our second home that Classy Closets has refined to meet all our storage needs, from closets to garage, from bathroom storage to entertainment center. And they never try to oversell, giving honest recommendations for products, charging fair prices within reach,” says Marta. “Their creative solutions and impeccable workmanship combine to make functional pieces we love living with. We have only one warning: Classy Closets is addictive, and you will find yourself wanting to spread the good news.”
In a letter to Gary’s business partner Kate Monaghan, Carlsbad-based Interior Designer Karen Wirrig echoes the Fowler’s sentiment and adds that “my new master closet is beautiful and your attention to detail is evident. I also want to commend your installation crew. They were on time, tidy, polite, and did excellent work … I will wholeheartedly recommend your company to all my clients. It has been a pleasure to work with you all.”

In a word, the answer is NO. There’s a myth that has been circulating for many years – that prostate cancer is a slow growing tumor and is not likely to cause serious health problems for the men diagnosed with it. The myth started because of concerns about the side effects of traditional treatments such as radical surgery and radiation.
While radical prostate surgical techniques and modern radiation delivery devices have improved significantly over more than 50 years, men are left with the reality that surgery causes permanent urinary incontinence (urine leakage) in at least 35% of patients and radiation can result in skin burns, rectal damage, permanent diarrhea and unacceptably high recurrence rates. This reality has caused many men to avoid treatment for their cancer so as not to become part of these very troubling statistics.
But that approach ignores the reality of cancer – nothing stops it from growing. Cancers grow every second of every day. When you go to sleep at night your cancer cells continue to divide, multiply and expand. Growth rates accelerate over time; they never decrease. Cancer growth is exponential – the first cancer cell divides and becomes 2, those double and become 4, 16, 256, 65,000… until the cell count in a prostate with cancer is typically in the millions. Cancers mutate and can become more aggressive, resulting in a higher likelihood of spreading throughout the pelvis or to bones throughout a man’s body causing severe, constant pain, stress fractures, spinal column collapse and paralysis.
Imagine a bathtub filling slowly with water from a dripping faucet. Eventually, the water overflows. Once that happens, there’s no way to put it back in the tub. In a similar way, once prostate cancer gets beyond the capsule of
the prostate, there is no way to put it back in. In other words, there is no way to cure it.
I have been privileged to work with some remarkable scientists and engineers to help the development of High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) over the past 15 years. HIFU today has a urinary incontinence rate of 3% and an ED rate of 5%. Cancer cure rates are comparable to those achieved with surgery. It’s why I chose HIFU for my prostate cancer treatment 2 ½ years ago.
Don’t ignore your cancer – respect it for what it is. A constantly growing, potentially lethal or debilitating disease. Early detection and advanced treatments like HIFU can result in men being cancer survivors without side effects seen with older treatment methods. When my prostate cancer was diagnosed, I didn’t hesitate! If you have any questions, please call my dedicated prostate cancer line, (844) HIFU DOC or visit www.westernstatesHIFU.com

Afew weeks ago, a lovely gentleman came into our store with a wedding dress in his arms, looking down at the floor.
"I love your windows. Could you please feature my daughter's wedding dress in one? I would love to see it up there for all to see.”

Getting excited, I happily exclaimed "YES!”
Then the man looked up at me and explained that he lost his daughter and this was her wedding dress. Thinking of my kids, I could not imagine what he was asking and how much it must hurt him. When I looked up to meet his eyes, he was already halfway out of the door, tears in his wake.
I never got his name. I never got his daughter's name. I want to know about her and to tell my customers about her and this lovely man who gave me the honor of sharing her memory in this town of ours.
PLEASE help me find this man! I hope this window brings you some peace. It was my honor, sir!” - Diane Silverstein, Absolutely Fabulous (714) 842-1608
