THE ANATOMY OF AN INDEX The S&P 500 represents a large portion of the value of the U.S. equity market Provided by Ken Earwood

D

id you know that nearly $10 trillion in assets are benchmarked to the Standard & Poor’s 500 Composite Index, including about $3.5 trillion in index assets?1 The S&P 500 is ubiquitous. It is constantly referenced in financial and non-financial media, and we may compare the return of our own investments to its performance. As the index represents approximately 80% of the value of the U.S. equity market (or about 80% of market capitalization), it may be worthwhile to gain a better understanding of its structure and workings.1 Breaking down the benchmark. The S&P 500, as we know it today, was introduced in March 1957. It tracks the market value of about 500 large firms that are listed on the Nasdaq Composite and the New York Stock Exchange. The S&P is structured to include companies from across the sectors of the business community, in an effort to represent the breadth of the U.S. economy.1,2 There are a number of criteria a company must meet to be considered for inclusion in the index. A firm must be a U.S. company publicly listed on a major equity market exchange, have a market capitalization of $6.1 billion or more, and have at least 250,000 of its shares traded in each of the six months prior to its consideration for index membership by Standard & Poor’s. A company must also be financially viable: the ratio of its annual dollar value traded to its float-adjusted market cap must be greater than 1.0.3

The S&P has changed over time. Companies have been gradually removed and added over the past 60-odd years. At the benchmark’s fiftieth anniversary in 2007, just 86 of the original components remained. Subsequent mergers and acquisitions have reduced that number further.3 Right now, about 20% of the weight of the S&P is held in ten companies, and the performance of tech shares influences the benchmark’s return, perhaps more than any other factor.3 The index has been altered through the years in response to changes in the economy. Across several decades, the makeup of the index’s various sectors has differed, along with their weightings. This leads to frequent updates for the equity funds that aim to replicate the index; in order to maintain that replication, they may quickly need to buy or sell shares of corporations that are being added or removed.3 Keep in mind that amounts in mutual funds and ETFs are subject to fluctuation in value and market risk. Shares, when redeemed, may be worth more or less than their 8 June 2019 | sorbetsocal.com

original cost. Equity funds are sold only by prospectus, so please consider their charges, risks, expenses, and investment objectives carefully before investing. A prospectus containing this and other information about the investment company can be obtained from your financial professional. Read it carefully before you invest or send money. Preferred Kitchen and Bath Different by Design

Beautiful, affordable kitchens and baths from people you can trust By Ann Laurence

A

s women, we care. It’s in our nature. We tirelessly look after the countless details of raising our children, maintaining our homes and furthering our careers. The women at Preferred Kitchen and Bath take this same passionate and detailed approach to every remodel they do. They realize that the kitchen is the heart of the home and that every detail of the space should evoke a feeling of familiarity and warmth. As the owner/designer of the South County-based Preferred Kitchen and Bath, Julie Wu understands this and with over 20 years of experience designing in the clothing industry she realizes color, form and function are paramount. Designer Lea Biermann comes from a similar background 10 June 2019 | sorbetsocal.com

with a Bachelor’s degree in Interior Design. Attention to detail is one her greatest strengths as she guides her clients through each step of the decision making process. Associate Designer Suzy Sparks also holds a Bachelor’s degree in Interior Design and enjoys looking at each space with a fresh approach. This talented design trio possess the “designer’s eye” coupled with the construction knowledge needed to make your remodeling process a breeze. “As designers, we love seeing the transformative process of remodeling,” says Julie. “Taking an old, outdated ‘waste of space’ kitchen and turning it into a client’s dream kitchen is what gives us joy.”

I suspect I am not unlike most other homeowners in that I prefer to do business with individuals who are not only highly qualified with a proven track record in their respective area of expertise, but also operate with integrity, personal attention and a straightforward “say what you mean, and mean what you say” approach. When it comes to home remodeling, we’ve all heard horror stories of projects that went way over budget

ter, which would improve people’s remodeling experience.” This concept has clearly served her well as the full-service interior design and remodeling firm has grown from a small operation into a thriving business, it will still be Julie, Lea or Suzy who will personally come to your home and oversee your remodeling project – from start to finish.

and took far longer than expected. For these reasons and more, it’s so refreshing to come across a company like Preferred Kitchen and Bath that is backed by the rave reviews and recommendations of scores of South County homeowners. As Lead Designer, Julie and her team, including Designer Lea Biermann and Associate Designer Suzy Sparks “think like homeowners” asking themselves “Knowing what we know, what would we do if we were spending our own hard earned money on this project?” and “If we were the client, what would we want to know and how would we want to be treated?” “We don’t think like contractors or salespeople even though we are both,” says Julie. “It starts with the at-

titude of the owners, which becomes the company culture and inevitably guides the day to day actions. We have attracted to our firm a wonderful family of designers and craftsmen which in turn help our clients imagine what they want and then make it a reality.”

A HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE When she started the company in 2003, Julie believed the Orange County market was ready for a remodeling company that thought and behaved differently. “Many companies had operated here for a long time and had become complacent regarding the way they served homeowners,” she says. “I believed it could be done much bet-

“We have invested extensively in computers, software and displays so that you can get as clear a picture as possible what your kitchen or bath will look like before you spend a penny,” says Julie. A team of caring, professional women run the daily operations of the company, including design, sales, ordering, scheduling and project management. They understand that when you decide to remodel your kitchen or bathroom, you are paying for more than just cabinets, counters, and fixtures. You are paying for designing, planning, scheduling, communicating and installing - a total remodeling experience culminating in a rewarding outcome or finished product. “We realize there are a multitude of decisions to make when attempting any remodeling project,” says Julie. “That is why we pride ourselves on being there each step of the way. From the initial phases of space plansorbetsocal.com | June 2019 11

tom touches that make our kitchen unique: drawers-within-drawers, slide outs, spice racks, lighted displays and soft-close doors. The boxes were well built, the door finishes are gorgeous, and the guarantee is reassuring.

ning and construction to the color and finish selection your designer will help you make the right decisions. From beginning to end your designer is only a phone call away.” But the true testament of a company’s success is its reputation in the industry and feedback from customers like Beverly Stumberg and John Dubbels of Mission Viejo who “love, love, love our new kitchen! We cannot believe that we have something so beautiful in our home.” In a letter to Julie upon the completion of their kitchen remodel, they wrote “We trusted your design expertise and you did not disappoint. Thank you for “holding our hands” throughout the entire process. It definitely helped mitigate the stress - as did the timely finish. Your crews were outstanding in every way. We cannot recommend you highly enough.” Ray and Jody Payne of Dana Point agree with Beverly and John’s assessment and add “we are truly happy with our new kitchen and our entire experience with Preferred Kitchen & Bath. Every phase of the job-from design, to products, to installation-exceeded our expectations. Preferred Kitchen & Bath made our kitchen remodel the easiest, fastest, and most pleasant home project of this magnitude we have ever done. “After living with our new kitchen a few months, there is not one thing 12 June 2019 | sorbetsocal.com

we would have done differently. The space works beautifully because of the time and attention Lea gave to the layout and design. The computer model meant we did not have to guess how it might look; we could actually see it. Lea worked with us closely to make sure our new cabinets, countertops and appliances were a perfect fit for our lifestyle. Lea checked everything so many times we did not have a single mistake in design. The cabinets we chose were the best quality and competitively priced. We never felt like we had to compromise. We got all the cus-

The workmen Preferred Kitchen & Bath employs are competent, trustworthy, and friendly. They were on time, on schedule and as minimally disruptive as possible. They left our home clean every evening. It is never easy having workers in your home, but they made it as painless as possible. Most important, they did the job right-and we are very picky. Preferred Kitchen & Bath kept every one of their promises. They delivered a quality custom kitchen at an excellent price. They gave us a detailed dated schedule and budget and stuck to it. We did not think it was possible to complete a major kitchen remodel in just one month, but Preferred Kitchen & Bath made it happen.” “We pride ourselves on a 16-year track record of making even the most finicky clients very, very happy,” says Julie. “We have eaten in many of the kitchens we have built. How many contractors and designers can make that claim?”

Why and When a Woman Should See a Urologist

By Robert Pugach, MD

If you are like many of my female patients, you may discuss your urological health issues with your OB/GYN or family doctor. Women usually report urinary tract infections (UTIs) and bladder control problems initially with their primary care doctor or gynecologist.

W

hile this may be appropriate, it is important to know why and when you should see a urologist.

Urologists are trained to treat male and female problems that affect the urinary tract, such as bladder, kidneys and reproductive system. Understanding that the urologic health needs are unique between sexes, I established two Centers of Excellence to address the specific needs of men and women. Women should see a urologist to address these common health issues:

• • • • •

Blood in urine Pain or burning during urination Urine leakage Urinary frequency Recurrent urinary tract infections, especially chronic infections • Bladder or pelvic organ prolapse • Low back pain relieved by urinating Women should not be embarrassed to talk to a urologist about their bladder control problems. Urinary incontinence is a very common problem which doesn’t just affect older women. Stress incontinence and overactive bladder problems are treatable and do not have to negatively affect your quality of life. At our Women’s Bladder Control Center of Excellence, Evans Tran, PA and I specialize in minimally invasive treatments to address many of these concerns. We begin by pinpointing your precise problem with diagnostic tests and recommend a customized treatment plan for you. Some of the advanced treatment modalities we use include acupuncture (PTNS), biofeedback, BOTOX®, pelvic floor rehabilitation, specialized medications and bladder nerve stimulation. Yes, talking about urinary issues might be uncomfortable, but it is your first step towards effective treatment. Don’t hesitate to schedule an appointment with Evans Tran, PA or myself.

Call (888) 735.4336 for a convenient appointment. Pacific Coast Urology is located at 3801 Katella Ave., Suite 110 in Los Alamitos and 16843 Algonquin St. in Huntington Beach. For info, visit www.pacificcoasturology.com 14 June 2019 | sorbetsocal.com

Elisabeth Donovan and her husband Paul Cambio, Of Counsel to the Law Office of Elisabeth Donovan

Ethics Are Now in Session:

THE FAMILY LAW OFFICES OF ELISABETH DONOVAN

By Jody Robinson Photography by Diana Schmitt, Accent Portraits by Diana

I’m not sure that I’ve ever associated the word ethical with a law office before. Maybe with an animal shelter, or a non-profit dedicated to planting trees.

W

hile ethical business tends to be fruitful, feelings of fairness, honesty, and equality don’t necessarily go hand in hand with child custody cases or marriage dissolutions. Six years ago, that changed for Elisabeth Donovan. As a young attorney, she worked for a large firm, taking on case 18 June 2019 | sorbetsocal.com

after case, learning all the things not to do when helping someone through a family law matter. “Immediately, I saw the need for a new generation of attorneys who took a more comprehensive approach to working with their clients.” Now, Elisabeth focuses on providing personalized and cost-effective representation to her clients in all areas of family law.

I sometimes wish someone had stepped in and helped my family while we were in crisis. Family law is the perfect fit as the culmination of my personal experiences. Visitation, guardianships, conservatorships, high net worth property division, prenuptial agreements. Going through a divorce or custody battle can be highly adversarial, “in a polarized system, and it is imperative to have counsel who will approach your case with long-term goals in mind.” Goals which include financial collateral - like college savings or retirement funds that can be quickly depleted in court. “Coming from a high-conflict family, I understand the dynamics of a family in crisis. Highly contested dissolution cases often manage to damage everyone in the vicinity.” Licensed as a Certified Divorce Financial Analyst gives her a unique insight into the financial effects of different settlement proposals. “Only through civil, ethical cases can children emerge emotionally healthy. When I became a lawyer, I wanted to make a difference in this world through my work. I sometimes wish someone had stepped in and helped my family while we were in crisis. Family law is the perfect fit as the culmination of my personal experiences.” Practice means more than just law to Elisabeth. Yoga and meditation are regular staples in her routine, as well as traveling in the pursuit of mindfulness: Morocco and Iceland just two of the more recent additions to the list. Of the seven continents, she’s been to six, incorporating her natural curiosity and intentionality into each step she has taken around the world. Helping clients make it through a difficult time comes naturally, when one has found their way through their own story of anger, disappointment, and healing and come out the other side. “I’ve learned to cultivate a real sense of mindfulness, which allows me to be present and available: in each moment open to my clients.” Her time in the courtroom has helped her achieve great results for her clients, but it is her passion that sets Elisabeth apart. Personally connecting with each person that walks in the door is the key to give them the best representation possible. “I work with each client personally to develop a cost-effective case strategy that won’t incur unnecessary fees, while obtaining the best possible outcome.” That’s where the word ethical comes in. Millions of families are faced with legal issues. “When I sit down with a client for the first time, I could see billable hours. But what lies in front of me is a problem to solve.” One that involves the past, present, and future simultaneously. Honesty and fairness must be the cornerstone.

CLIENT PERSPECTIVE

AREAS OF EXPERTISE

Review Elisabeth’s client testimonials and it’s immediately evident that these qualities are the bedrock of her practice.

Child Support Child Custody Conservatorships Divorce & Separation Guardianship Restraining Order Prenuptial Agreement Step-Parent Adoption

“Divorce is never easy. It is scary. All I can say is thank goodness I was referred to Elisabeth Donovan by a friend,” says client Ben. “I have heard so many horror stories about divorce. The three things that I see in most divorces are: Lawyers push to litigate everything and jack up legal fees, can’t be trusted, and they drag the process out for years. My experience was the exact opposite. During my free consultation Elisabeth Donovan told me told me about what it would cost (given that my ex’s attorney didn’t push back on everything) and about how long the process would take. And it ended up costing exactly what she said it would (drastically less than friends had paid their divorce attorneys in the past) and she wrapped everything up in about a month less than she estimated. She really knows what she is doing and was very ethical (she talked me off the ledge a few times) and fair to both me and my ex. I trusted her and listened to her advice, and I can say with absolute certainty that she is the biggest reason why, at the end of it all, I have a good relationship with my ex-wife. If you are looking to “take your spouse to the cleaners,” find someone else. If you are looking for a lawyer you can trust to settle your divorce in a timely and fair manner, HIRE ELISABETH DONOVAN!!!!” Another client, Kristine agrees with Ben’s assessment and adds “Elisabeth Donovan works hard and respectfully for each unique situation, and the affordability of her services was a plus. I am thankful for her and her ability to make you a priority … It’s very reassuring to know you have knowledgeable and qualified person by your side, one who is working in your best interest while going through one of the most stressful times in your life.” “Whether a divorce is on the horizon, domestic violence has taken place, or your wife wants to move out of California with your children, your legal advocate’s primary objective is to put the well-being of you and your family first.” First, before money. Before power, or accolades or inter-office bragging rights. Civility. Equality. True advocacy at its finest.

Focusing on What Matters

By Jody Robinson

I was in the zone. Heart pumping, uber-focused, lost in the moment. Halfway through a box of Rosemary and Olive Oil Triscuits with cheese and a glass of wine, Outlander streaming on the television, kids down for the night.

W

hen the episode ended though, I looked down and my lap was covered in crumbs, wine glass empty beside me: and at the end of the couch was my yoga mat. Unused for weeks now, always some excuse or another as to why I didn’t have the energy, or the time, or the money to get to a class and shape up, like I’d been intending to for months.

Over lunch recently, a couple of my mom friends and I grudgingly conceded that it had been too long since we really looked at how we were taking care of ourselves, instead, spending time on fruitless pursuits (like binge watching our favorite Netflix shows) that threatened to sink us deeper and deeper into the couch cushions. We’ve all tried our hand at gyms and at-home workout programs over the years, but nothing really seemed to stick. That was when one of our particularly fit friends told us about Anytime Fitness, a fairly new addition to the gym world in South Orange County. Specializing in a broad range of activities and offering an incredible array of equipment, the personnel at Anytime strives to deliver an elevated 24 June 2019 | sorbetsocal.com

gym experience without the undercurrent of competition. Beginning the build in October, and officially opening the doors to the Laguna Hills facility at El Toro and Moulton Parkway in February, Anytime Fitness’ co-owner Bethanie Pereira is a physician who understands the importance of self-care, and more importantly, “taking preventative measures to keep your body as healthy as you can.” Bethanie and her husband Sergio wanted to open a boutique gym that delivered a club experience “with a personal touch. We are here to get to know you. Personal trainers are carefully screened to train clients one-onone and each have a specialty to offer.” State-of-the-art equipment, new cardio with individual screens, personal training, group training, Zumba classes, yoga, strength training, nutrition and even rehab planning are products on the table at their spacious 7,000-square-foot facility. Members have 24/7 access to over 3,500 gyms worldwide. More than that though: passions. Holding themselves to a higher standard is the first step to Anytime’s revo-

lutionary approach to fitness. “Top of the line equipment, extreme cleanliness, and a personal experience go a long way with people who are burned out on fitness, or by another gym. By the time they get to us, it is evident we aren’t just another mega-gym.” Judging from the response of the community, the Pereiras seem have struck the at-times elusive balance between a clear understanding of fitness and its place in an overall health system, and the drive gym members had to better themselves on a personal level. “We’re independent owners and operators,” Bethanie notes with a smile, “we have our own fitness goals too! Sergio works out consistently and has been involved in the fitness industry for years, and we look at our community as an extension of this place, our home.” Going so far as to sponsor athletes in the Special Olympics, Anytime Fitness is a family, a hub, and a place where we get to decide how we want to age. Slowly, into that corner couch cushion, or with verve and resilience to time itself.

Anytime Fitness is located at 24290 El Toro Road (El Toro and Moulton Parkway) in Laguna Hills. Bethanie, Sergio and the Anytime Fitness team can be reached directly by calling (949) 715-7055.

There are three main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Because each has many different appearances, it is important to know the early warning signs.

L

ook especially for change of any kind. Do not ignore a suspicious spot simply because it does not hurt. Skin cancers may be painless, but dangerous all the same. If you notice one or more of the warning signs, see a board-certified dermatologist right away, preferably one who specializes in diseases of the skin. ACTINIC KERATOSIS An actinic keratosis (AK) is a crusty, scaly growth caused by damage from exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. An AK is considered a precancer because if left alone, it could develop into a skin cancer. AKs are the product of a lifetime accumulation of UV damage and typically appear on areas most commonly exposed sun, such as the backs of the hands, forearms, face, neck, and scalp. BASAL CELL CARCINOMA Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most frequently occurring form of all cancers, with more than 4 million cases of diagnosed in the U.S. each year. BCCs may look like open sores, red patches, pink growths, shiny bumps, or scars. Any skin lesion that doesn’t heal, or bleeds with even gentle trauma, such as drying with a towel, is concerning for a BCC. SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells arising in the epidermis, the skin’s outermost layer. SCCs often look like scaly red patches, crusty bumps, warts, or elevated growths with a central depression. SCCs may appear suddenly and some forms are tender to touch. They can become disfiguring and sometimes deadly if allowed to grow. More than 1 million cases of SCC are diagnosed each year in the U.S., which translates to about 115 cases diagnosed every hour. Incidence has increased by 200 percent in the past three decades in the U.S., and more than 15,000 Americans die each year from this type of skin cancer. MELANOMA Melanoma is a very dangerous form of skin cancer. Melanoma is caused mainly by intense, occasional UV exposure (frequently leading to sunburn), especially in those who are

genetically predisposed to the disease. An estimated 178,560 cases of melanoma are diagnosed in the U.S. each year and is fatal for an estimated 9,320 of these patients. Fortunately, if melanoma is recognized and treated early, it is almost always curable.

WHAT PATIENTS NEED TO KNOW 1. Everyone needs to perform a self-skin exam once a month. 2. Melanoma can appear anywhere on the skin, including the palms/soles, under your nails, and places...for most, have never seen the light of day (genitalia). For this reason, it is important to look everywhere. Lock the bathroom door, get out a hand mirror, and check, it could save your life. 3. What to look for: ABCDEs, and an ugly duckling A - Asymmetry: If I draw a line down the middle, do the sides match? B - Border: Is there a nice crisp border, or does the mole melt into the surrounding skin? C - Color: Moles should be one color, one shade of brown. Is there a variety of shades or additional colors, such as black, red, white, or blue? D - Diameter: Any mole larger than 6mm, ie the head of a pencil eraser, has a higher risk of becoming melanoma. E - Evolution: Has it changed? F - The Ugly Duckling Sign: Most people have a “signature mole,” their own personal mole appearance and architecture. Is there a mole that seems different from all the others? 4. Everyone needs a full body skin exam by a board-certified dermatologist once a year, more frequently if you have a family history of skin cancer, a personal history of skin cancer, or live in an area with substantial sunshine.

f course, we would all love to be healthier, look better and live well both physically and spiritually. This idea has finally been embraced and internationally recognized with the advent of “Global Wellness Day.” From now on the second Saturday of every June, will be set aside to recognize the importance of overall healthy living. The purpose of Global Wellness Day is to ask the question, “How can I live a healthier and better life?”

All specials good with purchase of any service with Jessica Renee 4. EAT HEALTHY

The answer is simpler than you think, and can be answered with the “Global Wellness Manifesto.” During the month of June consider following these 7 steps:

Try to consume foods that are less processed and produced through natural methods using appropriate fertilization and pest control techniques. Avoid foods using pesticides and chemicals. An addition, eat a balance diet of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats.

1. QUALITY EXERCISE

5. DO A GOOD DEED

An hour of exercise daily has been proven to significantly change ones health for the better. Each day choose an activity that alternates between cardio, strength and flexibility.

Do a good deed to break your prejudices, to make the world a better place to live. See how you will change your life by changing someone else’s.

2. DRINK MORE WATER The many aliments we suffer from daily, like headaches, heartburn, and fatigue are due to dehydration. Try and drink only water in the day. The ideal amount to consume is Body Weight ÷ 2 = ounces of water.

3. USE LESS PLASTIC Plastic bottles are made from petroleum that is known to cause innumerable damage to our health and the environment. Try using a reusable water bottle, it’ll be a habit before you know it.

6. EAT WITH THOSE YOU LOVE Eat a family dinner with your loved ones in a room where, if possible, there are no smart phones and TV. Talk about your day. Listen to each other. Research shows that family dinners with loved ones have a psychologically positive effect on overall wellbeing.

7. SLEEP AT 10 PM Sleep is a critical process during which our body regulates everything and repairs and heals itself. It slows down ageing and protects us from diseases.

Global Wellness Day will be celebrated this year on June 8th, and in more than 130 countries at 5,000 different locations. Align is excited to be part of this event. We invite you to a free class of your choice that day by using promo code Wellness19. Align Pilates & Yoga is located at 31896 Plaza Dr. in San Juan Capistrano. Drug Free, Surgery Free & Needle Free:

A NEW, PROVEN TREATMENT TO REVERSE ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION

A Q & A with Dr. Michael DeYoung, M.D., LaSara Medical Group By Jody Robinson

For many men with erectile dysfunction (ED), the topic is taboo - associated with a stigma that affects their self-esteem. So much so that they often suffer in silence - not even sharing the details of what they are experiencing with their primary care physician or urologist. But with a new, proven treatment to reverse ED without drugs, surgery or needles, there’s simply no better time to defy statistics and get your sex life back in action. What these men might find surprising is how much they have in common with approximately 18 million other men across the country. Erectile dysfunction impacts men of all ages from their 20s to their 90s. But here’s a particularly staggering statistic: It is estimated that 50% of men will be affected by ED by the age of 50. That means that when a group of 50-something year old men get together, nearly half of the men in the room are likely struggling with ED. The physicians at LaSara Medical Group have seen men from age 27 to 95 walk through their doors. For those with a vascular disorder, or blood flow disorder, as the root 28 June 2019 | sorbetsocal.com

cause of their ED, LaSara offers a clinically proven treatment option without drugs, without surgeries and without needles. As the Southern California leader in low intensity focused shockwave therapy, LaSara has seen incredible results for its patients utilizing the only proven method of reversing ED for the long-term. Before obtaining treatment anywhere, Dr. Michael DeYoung, Medical Director at LaSara, strongly encourages men to do their due diligence, investigating the efficacy and research behind provider care.

While most of LaSara’s competitors base their businesses on the same research, they use an entirely different machine with a type of energy (radial, acoustic or pressure waves) that produces less than half the success rate that LaSara’s patients enjoy. If that weren’t enough of a difference, the machine that LaSara’s competitors utilize requires the use of numbing cream to (hopefully) minimize what can be a rather painful process - unlike LaSara’s pain-free treatment option. “Our goal is to restore natural functionality in a safe, discreet environment for our patients. Our professional, all male staff is committed to providing a medical experience that surpasses all your expectations.” In the following interview, Dr. DeYoung addresses frequently asked questions concerning the patient experience and shares specifics about low intensity focused shockwave therapy. Q: How long has LaSara Medical Group been in existence and what does it specialize in? A: Since January 2018. We specialize in Men’s sexual health providing treatment for erectile dysfunction and peyronies disease. We’ve treated more men in southern California with focused shockwaves than anyone else around. On a daily basis, we have 14-18 men coming through our doors in each location. We use the exact machinery and protocol that’s been clinically studied and proven. Q: What is low intensity focused shockwave therapy, is it a new treatment and how does it work? A: The treatment is relatively new to the United States, but not to the world. It’s been studied and used for 15 years, originally in Europe (Switzerland, Germany, UK, Denmark, etc.), Canada, Asia (Japan, Korea, India), Australia, and most recently here in the US in the last couple of years. The majority of men who experience ED have a vascular disorder or blood flow disorder. What happens is their blood vessels have prematurely hardened, there is plaque that builds up, or they have other medical conditions that attack the vascular system, such as Diabetes. When this happens, a man loses his ability for blood to easily travel into his penis allowing for an erection to occur. We use low intensity focused shock waves to trigger the body to grow new blood vessels into the penis. The shockwaves create a small micro trauma. When this happens, new blood vessels begin to grow throughout a man’s penis. This is the process of neovascularization. Over time, the body miraculously repairs and heals the countless blood vessels damaged and prematurely hardened by the accumulation of plaque. As the plaque becomes eliminated, more and more blood vessels grow back... The ultimate goal is get a man back to achieving erections

naturally and without the use of medication, like Viagra or Cialis. Q: How do you determine if a prospective patient will benefit from treatment? A: The process starts with a complete medical evaluation and history to determine whether a vascular disorder is the cause of a prospective patient’s ED. We weed out if he is experiencing ED as a result of a psychological or neurological issue. If the ED is determined to be caused by a vascular disorder and he does not have other major medical risk factors, then he is a good candidate for this treatment. Our patients range in age from 27 to 95 and about 80% of our patients get back to experiencing full erections naturally without the use of medication. Q: What are the benefits of treatment? What is the process and when might a patient expect to see results? A: The primary benefit or goal of treatment is to restore a patient’s ability to have spontaneous intimate experiences, restored confidence and a natural sex life. Unlike other treatment options, there’s no timing to take a pill when you want to perform. No injections to medically induce an erection, which can obviously be very intrusive when you are “in the moment.” Treatment is non-invasive - no surgery and no side effects. In terms of what a patient can expect of the process, the first step is to schedule a consultation - a 10 to 30-minute phone call with a member of our team will give us an idea of whether or not he is a good candidate for the treatment. After he is determined to be a quality candidate and that the root cause of his ED is likely a vascular disorder, the patient will visit our office for an in-person consultation with one of our physicians. The next step would be to begin treatment, which typically involves six visits over the course of three to five weeks. Then we wait for 90 days as the body takes six to 12 weeks to fully react to the treatment, at which time he’ll come back in for a follow up visit with the doctor. Because LaSara is committed to achieving the best result for its patients, they will perform a second round of treatments, if necessary, at no additional charge. Call for your FREE phone consultation to determine if LaSara’s treatment is right for you. Dr. Michael DeYoung, M.D. is the Medical Director for LaSara Medical Group with offices in Tustin and Beverly Hills. A Fellow of the American College of Emergency Medicine, Dr. DeYoung worked full time in emergency medicine for 43 years before retiring in 2017 to focus on his “second career” in the field of men’s sexual health. The Tustin office is located at 14642 Newport Avenue, Suite 250. The Los Angeles office is located at 11500 W. Olympic Blvd., Suite 440. Staying Busy in the Beehive State

A Buzzworthy Guide

to Family Fun in Downtown

Salt Lake City By Jody Robinson

O

ne of my favorite things about Salt Lake City is its abundance of trees. In fact, the University of Utah campus, on the bench of the city’s foothills, is a designated State Arboretum, with over 8,000 trees. Boasting 300 plus varieties, including almost 40 different types of conifer, the city, and the campus in particular are an incredible sight in the early days of spring as the beech, elm, oak, and Japanese flowering cherry trees begin to bloom. It is said that you can experience all four seasons in a day, and that is certainly true if you’re planning on venturing up any of the myriad canyons that flank Salt Lake’s downtown sprawl. Sun in the morning and snow in the afternoon (winter into late spring) makes for beautiful days exploring all that the city has to offer: bookstores like The King’s English with its incredible storytime workshops; classic diners like Ruth’s with plates for the kids and biscuits as big as your head; or the gorgeous City 42 June 2019 | sorbetsocal.com

Creek Center, with over 100 stores and eateries in a walkable open air floor plan. The Hogle Zoo’s Wildlife Connections give parents and kids alike one-of-a-kind animal experiences with interactive feedings. An events calendar that is positively bursting at the seams has activities for everyone: from Tot Tuesdays and Wild Wednesdays to Behind the Scenes Tours. Historic Temple Square tops the list of “must see” sights when in Salt Lake City. Home to the global headquarters of The Jesus Christ Church of Latter-day Saints (popularly known as Mormons), the 35-acre property contains more than 15 attractions, including the impressive Salt Lake City Temple (which took 40 years to build from1853 - 1893) and is one of the oldest attractions in the area, the Tabernacle - home to the world-renowned Tabernacle Choir, beautiful gardens, art exhibits in the Church History Museum and the Salt Lake City Temple. Completed in 1867, the Tabernacle is one of the most “acoustically sound and architecturally awe-inspiring

buildings on earth.” Brigham Young directed the building should be designed so people could see and hear the speaker without impediment. To do this successfully, bridge-building techniques used to construct the roof so that support pillars were not necessary. Every Thursday evening from 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm, the Tabernacle Choir rehearsals are open to the public to view at no cost. Monday through Friday at 12 pm, visitors can enjoy a 30-minute organ recital by Tabernacle organists and guest organists. Built in 1854, the Beehive House was home to Brigham Young (Utah’s first governor) and later other Church leaders. The large representation of a beehive on top of the structure symbolizes the strong sense of community and diligent work ethic of the Latter-day Saints who settled in Salt Lake City. “I’m bored” is a phrase you’ll never hear if you purchase a Salt Lake Connect Pass (visitsaltlake.com), which allows access to 16 of the region’s best family-friendly attractions at significant savings. From the Clark

Planetarium and Natural History Museum of Utah to Discovery Gateway Children’s Museum, the aforementioned Hogle Zoo and Tracy Aviary, there’s no shortage of kid-friendly sight-seeing opportunities. A twoday pass runs $46 - $54 which saves you 50% - 80% off regular admission prices to the included attractions from elephants to apes and sweeping mountain scenery to historic Temple Square, you can do it all at your own fun-filled pace.

DESTINATION DINING

From American classics to multicultural eateries, award-winning chefs and inventive restaurants, Salt Lake City scores on all counts. Located in downtown SLC at 418 E. 200 South, HSL (hslrestaurant.com) evolved from the restaurant group’s first establishment in Park City and features a carefully curated menu driven by the seasons - Chefs Briar Handly and Matt Nelson strive to source local and regional ingredients the height of freshness. The charcuterie arrived with a flavorful selection of artisanal meats, farmstead cheeses, pickles, signature sourdough, lavender honey and roasted hazelnuts. Popular dishes include a Hamachi Crudo with spaghetti squash, almonds and lemongrass ponzu; General Tso-style cauliflower accented by fresno pepper and sriracha vinaigrette; a delicious wild rice and quinoa tostada. Heartier entrees range from the Niman beef short rib (with molasses and maple jus, sunchoke and celery root, pickled romanesco and purple cauliflower) and New York steak (cipollini demi-glace, duck fat yukon gold potatoes and charred broccolini). For a great go-to for the kids, try the woodfired pizza (my plain cheese pizza-eating daughter discovered she absolutely adores pesto and burrata thanks to HSL) and you simply can’t go wrong with the eatery's

signature fried chicken accompanied by salt and vinegar fries. In nearby Cottonwood Heights, we opted to expand our kids’ palates sampling Vietnamese "street food” at the newly opened Saola (saola-slc.com) (owners are putting the finishing touches on the space, which will showcase a beautiful sushi display and full bar, several semi-private dining areas and an expansive dining room). A fan of Pho? You’ll have your work cut out for you in choosing which of the three Hanoi-style rice noodle soups (house made versions here are simmered for 12 hours with their family’s special spice blend): Pho Beef (beef bone broth, choice of grass-fed brisket, rare round-eye beef or beef meatballs); Pho Chicken (poached chicken in chicken broth Downtown Salt Lake City

with fresh rice noodles, spices, ginger, onion, cilantro and scallions); Pho Vegan in vegetable broth with bean curd. Prefer a heartier meal? Try the Banh Mi (a stuffed baguette sandwich made in the French-Vietnamese style): the French Dip was filled with tender roast beef, melted cheese, grilled onions and a flavorful pho dipping sauce. Our son, who generally isn’t our adventurous eater, had two helpings of everything - Xien Nuong (traditional Vietnamese marinated and grilled chicken skewers), chicken fried rice and crispy pork spring rolls (rice paper, pork, bean thread noodle, carrot, mushroom and jicama) that are worth writing home about.

ACCOMMODATION OF DISTINCTION

If you’re looking for the perfect home base to anchor your stay in the Beehive State capital, The Grand America (grandamerica.com) has something for everyone. 775 decidedly generous with space, elegantly styled and well-appointed guestrooms await the entire family, with floor-toceiling windows for the best views in town. The Executive Suites offer an indulgent 880 square feet of warm, cultured decor (from plush down bedding to the rich tones of the thick English wool carpet to handcrafted cherry wood Richelieu furniture and Italian marble soaking tub and

At the center of all good gatherings is the sense of celebration.

By Jody Robinson

There are extroverts and introverts. There are loud personalities and reserved ones. Those who love dinner in with a few friends, or a real lollapalooza with everyone they know. The common ground between both types?

B

oth like a good party, no matter the size or shape. “At the center of all good gatherings is the sense of celebration,” notes Candy Hirte, owner of Costa Mesa’s Where’s The Party? store. Candy knows her way around a celebration. In business since 1990, she and a cadre of incredible ladies have been making every occasion special for their customers with everything from invites to home decor. “Customer service comes first, but that’s pretty simple when we all love the idea of celebrating every holiday.” Nowadays the competition is building online, but even with expedited shipping, nothing really helps set the tone of a party like talking through a theme or decor details with an expert. “Each one of the wonderful women (there are 17 of them!) who work here can walk you through the process and share our etiquette gleaned from 29 years in business.” 46 June 2019 | sorbetsocal.com

Paper goods, balloons, and home decor weren’t Candy’s original business plan. “I kind of stumbled into the party,” she notes with a chuckle. “I met a darling girl at a class I was taking and she said she was interested in opening up a party store in Orange County! I jumped in with both feet, not knowing a darn thing about this business. Well, except that I do love parties.” Quickly growing to love chatting with each and every customer who walked in the doors, Candy soon realized that on a very personal level, the business was about the personal friendships she was developing, and the small and large moments that made up each individual’s lives. “May-

be getting involved in the industry was a fluke, but knowing how much I love people, it just made sense to celebrate every occasion with them!” Candy and her husband love their community, and often take the time to go out with their friends and family. “Obviously we love movies or re-

laxing with a good book, but giving back to those who surround us is so important to us. Through the store, through loving what I do every day, contributing to our local schools and philanthropies in the area. They’re our big supporters, and I must say, I come to work every day loving who I work with and excited to help a customer with their party.” Bridal, baby, and kids. Greeting cards, business, or personal stationery. Wedding invitations and essentials: no category is off limits or out of reach.

Some might question why I would make the drive to Costa Mesa from my home in San Juan Capistrano to peruse Candy’s wares. My answer is quite simply that I’m not aware of a store in South County quite like hers - Where’s the Party? would be worth the drive if it were twice the distance. I could honestly spend hours wandering around the store looking at all the amazing hostess gifts, home decor and unique presents for weddings, baby showers, holidays and all of life’s other occasions. I’m already envisioning retro party ideas (think 80s, western, disco, Roaring 20s or other era-themed events where only a paper invitation will do). For a more curated experience, all you have to do is see what’s coming up on the events list. From taking a modern calligraphy workshop to spotting the team at a wedding show, there’s something for everyone, even those of us with little or no decision making skill to speak of. You’ll feel

directed and taken care of: ready to take on your next party, be it baby’s first birthday or your boss’ retirement bash. Even personalization on your favorite Crane or Rifle Paper Co. stationery. If it’s time to celebrate someone, or maybe it’s just been too long since you threw a good dinner party, Where’s the Party can help you find that common ground and let your passion take over. Introvert or extrovert. “Where’s the party? You tell us!”

Beacon Carpet Cleaning Lighting the Way to a Cleaner Space By Jody Robinson

When I was a child, I remember my parents moving our family into a new house, with pristine, white carpets. Beautiful to look at, but completely impractical when you consider that two young children would soon be tromping about.

A

s expected, my brother and I managed to ruin a swath of the floor covering in spectacular fashion … and in relatively short order. Enough so that it was replaced with a more manageable shade. Had my parents discovered the benefits of professional carpet cleaning services like those offered by the Laguna Niguelbased Beacon Carpet Cleaning, they certainly would have been better able to keep their flooring, countertops and upholstery from looking like they’d survived the tornado of their kids.

An IICRC, Wools of New Zealand and Carpet and Rug Institute certified firm, Beacon takes the process of education to the next level, ensuring their team of professionals are trained to an unprecedented degree of sharpness and quality. The Master and Journeyman Certifications, highest available in the carpet cleaning industry, ensure that Ken and Linda’s customers enjoy a necessary service given by a trustworthy crew.

Ken and Linda Rogers, who founded Beacon in 1988, originally intended to simply find something they could do side-by-side. Both having spent their careers in various customer service oriented businesses, and searching for an opportunity to branch out, they decided upon carpet cleaning. In the years since, the couple and their longtime staff “family” have set the standard in residential and commercial carpet cleaning across Orange County.

Fast forward (a few) years and I’m now a grown-up with kids of my own. By pure happenstance, our family inherited the gorgeous off-white carpeting that came with the home we purchased a few years ago. Add the happy fact that our abode has been the scene of many an afternoon play date and the addition of a puppy a couple of years ago and you can probably imagine the toll the carpets have taken. But unlike my parents, I have long recognized the importance of calling in the experts - well before the point of no return.

When we initially called Beacon Carpet Cleaning and MarbleLife Stone and Tile Restoration, Ken personally came out to give us an estimate. In utilizing their services, I can confidently share that he, Linda and their crew - many of whom have been with the company for over a decade - are not only highly professional, but are among the nicest people in the business. They did a great job and given that our kids and pup are still young and rambunctious, we’ve since called on Beacon several more times. Most recently, we reached out to Ken and his team in the hopes of bringing our dull, scratched marble floors back to their original shine and luster. Again, Beacon more than delivered. I’d like to make special mention of longtime Beacon team member Jose, who is clearly a seasoned professional with a particular expertise in tile and stone flooring. In marveling at Jose’s handiwork, we can hardly believe how beautiful our flooring is now - the marble literally looks as though was newly installed. Maintaining one’s floors, showers, countertops, upholstery, rugs, mattresses, and other areas around the home can be overwhelming: with or without children running amok. Since its inception, Beacon evolved to encompass a complementary business Marblelife Stone and Tile Restoration with the goal of engaging its clients on as many surfaces as possible. Beacon providing protectants and cleaning services for almost anything you can think of: your Grandmother’s antique Oriental rug to yacht and boat cleaning in the harbors of Orange County. “Each of these surfaces work together to create a cherished expression of your identity, dreams, and values,” says Ken. “It’s a unique space to celebrate with friends, or just to enjoy time by yourself. We can meet you in that space and help you protect what you invested in, keeping it looking its best for as long as possible.” Beacon Carpet Cleaning and Marblelife is located at 27665 Forbes Road in Laguna Niguel. Four year old Mack is a great dog looking to find his new best buddy. He loves to be active and doesn’t mind long walks or vigorous romps outdoors. Friendly and attentive, Mack responds very well to training and would thrive under further direction from an experience dog owner.

Kenai is a handsome Husky who is really quite the sweetheart. Like most Huskies, Kenai is high energy and does best after some vigorous exercise. He would make a wonderful family dog in an active home with a workout buddy or two. Luigi is a happy, little guy who knows how to appreciate a good scratch behind the ears. Only one and a half years old, he is energetic and loves his walks. Luigi is looking for a home where he can finally settle down and be the center of attention.

Uzo is a five year old Domestic Shorthair with a beautiful, black smoke coat. Very outgoing and sociable, she is a talkative kitty who loves meeting new people. Uzo has lived with other cats and wouldn’t mind having a feline roommate.

CARE TIPS

The Benefits of Diabetic Socks By Livia De Los Rios

T

he primary purpose of diabetic socks is to keep your feet dry, decrease your risk for foot injury and avoid preventing or slowing blood circulation. The difference between diabetic socks and regular cotton socks is that they are usually are made of materials that wick away moisture, are fitted, padded and are non-binding. Because people with diabetes are at higher risk of foot injuries and infection due to damage to their circulatory and nervous

systems caused by high blood sugar levels, they would benefit from wearing diabetic socks. Nerve damage, or neuropathy, decreases sensation and increases risk of injury, particularly on the bottom of the feet and can also cause people with diabetes to be unaware of an injury and delay treatment. Circulatory problems also make it harder for wounds to heal. For these reasons and more, proper foot care is critically important for people with diabetes and diabetic socks are designed with these specific issues in mind.

Take a Moment with the Merrills Who else would you ask other than the “Medicare Answer Man” or the "Medicare Presenter" for Mission Hospital? Congratulations, You’re Turning 65!

One of the biggest benefits of turning 65 is you qualify for Medicare, but many are not sure how it works and what they should do now. This 2019 Special Edition Newsletter will take you through the process and explain in plain English what you need to do. By now you have probably received tons of mail and trying to pick one company or agent over the others can be challenging. We can help! We are the Merrills, and we have helped thousands of baby boomers with their Medicare Insurance in Orange County. Here are some basics for your consideration. Original Medicare (Parts A and B) Medicare was started in July of 1965. It is provided by the government and pays fees for your care directly to the doctors and hospitals you visit. Part A helps with hospital cost and Part B helps with doctor and outpatient care. In 2005, the government added part D and this helps pay for prescription drug costs. Part D is covered later in this newsletter, but you need to know you’re required to have “credible drug coverage” as part of your plan. Medicare Part A (Hospital Coverage) Part A helps with the cost of your inpatient hospital stays and skilled nursing care after a hospital stay. Medicare part A premium is free to you as long as you have worked at least 10 years in this country. Although the monthly premium is free, the deductibles and copays are not. To walk into a hospital will cost over $1,300 and if your stay is longer than 60 days, then a copay of over $300 is added on for days 61-90 and over $600 per day for days 91-150. Medicare Part B (Doctor Visits) Part B helps with doctor visits including outpatient care at hospitals and clinics, lab tests and some skilled nursing care. The nice part is you can see any qualified doctor who is eligible to participate in Medicare and who is accepting new patients. There is a monthly premium for Part B and most people pay $135.50 per month, but if you’re single and making more than $85,000 per year or married making over $170,000, you will pay a higher monthly premium. As far as copays, you’ll pay the first $185 then generally Part B pays 80% of your doctors’ fees and you are responsible for the remaining 20%. In our experience, the Part B 20% that you are responsible for puts you at unlimited financial risk. (We’ll talk later about ways to limit your risk.) Medicare Part D (Prescription Drugs) Part D helps with the cost of prescription drugs. Part D plans are sold by private companies and range in price anywhere from $15 to over $100 per month. WORD OF WARNING: You will read that Part D is optional. The problem is if you don’t sign up when you first become eligible and decide to at a later date, you will be assessed a penalty and that penalty will stay with you the rest of your life. For example, a person turns 65 and doesn’t take medication and decides against enrolling in Part D. When they turn 70, their doctor prescribes an expensive medication and this individual decides to enroll into Medicare Part D. Shortly thereafter they receive a letter from Medicare stating their late enrollment penalty. In this example that person’s penalty would be roughly $25 per month for the rest of their life.

With 16+ years of experience, we’ve got ALL your Medicare Questions Covered! Stephen Merrill - the "Medicare Answer Man" 949-584-2634 Lic#0E31931 smerrillins@me.com 56 June 2019 | sorbetsocal.com

Original Medicare doesn’t cover everything. Original Medicare helps you get basic coverage, but you should expect to pay some of the costs. Many people enroll in additional insurance coverage to help them pay for the cost and benefits that aren’t covered by Original Medicare Parts A and B. That is why you need to know the difference between Medicare Supplement Plans and Medicare Advantage Plans. Medicare Advantage Plans: (Medicare Part C):

Medicare Advantage plans are run by private companies. You have probably heard of United Healthcare, Anthem Blue Cross, Blue Shield, SCAN, Humana, Kaiser, etc. These companies offer Advantage Plans. They combine coverage for certain hospital costs, doctor visits and most include Part D coverage at no additional cost. In most plans you choose a primary doctor and your doctor has access to specialists within their group. Many plans offer additional benefits not offered by Original Medicare such as Vision, Dental, Hearing, Chiropractic, Acupuncture and Gym Memberships. Although you continue to pay your Part B premium, many Advantage Plans offer $0 monthly cost. All plans also offer Out-of-pocket limits on medical cost. (Remember the unlimited 20% you’re responsible for on Part B costs?) There is one health question that can keep you from being eligible: ‘Do you have end stage renal disease?’ If that is a no, you’re in! Each year you have a chance to change your coverage during the Annual Enrollment Period (AEP), which starts October 15th and runs through December 7th. Medicare Supplement Plans: These are also called Medigap plans as they help you cover some or all of the costs that Medicare Parts A and B don’t cover. The nice part is you can see any doctor in the USA that participates in Medicare. For the freedom of seeing any participating doctor, the premium is higher. Remember you still keep paying your Part B premium and with a supplement plan, your Part D premium is separate and not built in like most Advantage plans are. When you turn 65, you have a guaranteed issue in a Supplement Plan and are ‘Guaranteed Renewable.’ That means the policy renews automatically from year to year as long as you pay the premium on time.

Personal Note We can’t tell you the hundreds of times we’ve sat at a kitchen table and the person turning 65 walks over with a stack of papers 3 inches thick and says, “Am I really supposed to read all this?” Our job is to help people with their Medicare insurance – that’s all we do 365 days a year! Obviously we would like to earn your business, but more importantly we want to make sure you have the best insurance that is tailored around your needs. Also, we make sure you are within Medicare’s rules so you don’t receive a dreaded penalty letter! By the way, the person you sign up with becomes your Medicare agent, so choose wisely!

Thank you for reading this Special Edition. We hope you learned a lot. The bottom line is this: don’t mess around with something as important as your health insurance. This is all we do (Medicare education and enrollments), and there is no fee for you to choose us as your Medicare partners. Why take a chance and do it yourself? Call us today and let’s get started. Thank you.

E

ach year in Hawaii as the winter temperatures drop to a lovely 81 degrees, the groundswell charges the shores of Oahu with monstrous waves, sometimes reaching 60 feet tall. For many, the spectacle is overwhelming - the only chance most of us have to see the terrifying immensity of nature up close. For others, it brings the chance to enter into the annals of history by riding down the face of one of those monsters on a three inch thick piece of fiberglassed extruded polystyrene (for those of you who don’t surf, glassed EPS equals one intense wave-riding surfboard). Some picture Oahu, and think only of Waikiki Beach and Waimea Bay. Some imagine the bustling metropolis of the Honolulu - all traffic and big business; island style, of course. A quick TripAdvisor search produces pages of information on museums, snorkeling excursions, beaches to stroll: helicopter and hot air balloon tours, aquariums, nightclubs and for the courageous, even a submarine adventure. DIAMOND HEAD LUAU HAWAII’S ONLY FARM TO TABLE LUAU Why come all the way to Polynesia and then never truly experience it? Explore the rich heritage of the Pacific Islands and cultures (Samoa, Tonga, Aotearoa, Fiji, Tahiti and Hawaii) as

natives demonstrate their arts, music, history and games at Waikiki’s only oceanfront farm-to-table luau. Crafting an authentic Hawaiian and Polynesian experience on the islands can be a tough mark to hit. At Diamond Head Luau however, the craft is interactive and engrained. Basing their teachings on the shared experiences of Hawaiian and Polynesian culture, activities like hula, lei making, weaving and more combine into the ultimate evening. Top it all

off with the only farm-to-table buffet dining experience in Hawaii, and the excitement leans over the tipping point. Diamond Head Luau believes in Malama ‘ka ‘Aina (caring for the land), and as such, only serves local ingredients: from the root to your plate. The appetizer station showcases lychee wood-smoked local marlin dip and kalo (taro) hummus served with freshly made uala chips (local sweet potato). There is literally something for every palette - from a variety of salads to poi shooter with Lomi Lomi salmon, fresh poke (my fave), kalbi short ribs, Huli Huli rotisserie chicken, vegetarian dishes, kalua pork and Hawaiian-inspired desserts. An exciting show with fire performances and traditional hula cap off the night, and round out even the finest Hawaiian vacation.

STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN If you’re looking for a memorable way to work in a bit of exercise on your trip, try hiking the Diamond Head Crater. I have to say, there’s something rather empowering about walking up the inside slop of an extinct volcano. More than 3,500 feet in diameter with a 760foot summit, Diamond Head is a lasting remnant of a volcanic explosion that occurred about a half a million years ago. Ancient Hawaiians called it Laeahi, which translates to “brow of the tuna.” The name “Diamond Head” has more recent roots in the 1800s, when British sailors mistakenly believed that the glistening calcite crystals embedded in the lava rock were diamonds lodged in the lodged in the crater’s soil.

It takes 45 minutes to an hour to reach the summit, and half that time for the trip back down. The trail is a switchback with the mountain on one side and a railing on the other. After a lookout point that doubles as a rest stop, the trail takes a steep upward ascent through a series of stairs and tunnels carved into the mountain. The last set of stairs is a 99-step climb that my husband and kids clamored up with little effort while I took the slow and steady - and decidedly less “in shape” approach - that eventually ends at a World War II bunker. From there, you step out to one of the best panoramic views of the island. We lucked out with the weather during our four-day trip to the islands which meant that once we summited the crater, we were rewarded with a spectacular view of Oahu’s entire leeward side (the side to which the wind is blowing). Entry into the state park is $5 per vehicle or $1 per pedestrian.
