LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

At the time of this writing, I still haven’t reconciled the depth of what the COVID-19 crisis actually means for our global economy, let alone what the cost will be to average households around the world and right here in our own community.

Changing a business model is never easy, and certainly, with shelter-in-place restrictions continuing, not something you might think to take on. But I take hope that many local businesses - like tutoring centers, enrichment programs, fitness and dance studios - are changing up their operations to offer virtual classes and workshops.

Besides the tremendous respect for the heroic healthcare workers on the front lines of this pandemic and (as a mom of two school-aged children currently engaged in “distance learning”) increased appreciation for teachers, I personally feel a swelling of pride and affinity for friends and strangers alike who have truly stepped up during these trying times.

I’ve learned of so many inspirational stories of individuals who are going above and beyond to give back. Business owners who have found that they have the ability to remain agile, and pivot their focus, looking to what they can do to assist others: even if their doors remain closed. People like James Parris, Marty Wells and Ricardo Beas (owners of the San Juan Capistrano-based Sweet Home Capistrano Bakery, Bad to the Bone BBQ and Ricardo’s Place, respectively) who joined forces to create the Crisis Kitchen Coalition dedicated to providing meals free of charge to the community’s residents through the duration of the COVID-19 outbreak (page 36); Chef Dee Nguyen (Break of Dawn Bakery in Laguna Hills) who delivers free meals to local healthcare workers (page 38); and Tam Nguyen (president of the Laguna Hills-based Advance Beauty College) who co-founded Operation: Nailing It, donating thousands of face masks and gloves to frontline healthcare workers (page 40).

As a mother, I am worried about the state of the world for my children, and what lessons they will take from this uncommon and uncertain time. 5th and 7th grade are hard enough without a pandemic to worry about, without separation from friends and a clearly defined structure to fall back on. But instead of fear, they are seeing hope. Instead of defeat, ingenuity. Instead of acrimony, generosity. There is good, great good being traded in the marketplace. In spite of our circumstance. In spite of the challenges we are facing and the fear, and uncertainty, there is no doubt in my mind that we - as a community and as a country - will survive; and thrive.

When the Whole World Grieves

First, if you are grieving the death of someone you love, let me offer my heartfelt condolences to you. These are unprecedented times in which your grief is compounded by the uncertainty surrounding us.

When I speak on the topic, I refer to losing our “North” when we are grieving. When we are grieving our world feels turned upside down. Our task is to find our “North” again; not to recover because “recovery” means to go back to how things were before our loss. Rather, we enfold our loss into our lives. The end game is not to get over it, to find closure, or move on... it’s to find renewal. Grief has no timeline; it lasts as long as it lasts. We learn to integrate our loss into our lives, yet we will always grieve someone we love.

Grief, by definition, is a keen mental suffering or distress over affliction or loss; sharp sorrow; painful regret; a cause or occasion of keen distress or sorrow. Grief is a normal and natural response to the loss of someone (or something) important to you. Grief is

a process of adaptation; a life transition. It’s individual – I may have some letters after my name, designating me as an expert, yet you are the “expert” of your own grief – it’s unique to only you.

So here we are, in a world of uncertainty, and I am struck by the fact that what we are feeling individually and collectively as a nation and a world sure feels an awful lot like grief.

While we grieve this global health crisis, it’s important for each of us to honor our own sadness and loss. We each are grieving individual losses such as work, social activities, school, and physically being with people we love. It’s easy to feel selfish or guilty for grieving individual losses in the midst of a pandemic the likes of which most of us have never experienced in our lifetime.

Brene Brown has a powerful quote, “You can’t get to courage without walking through vulnerability.” Identifying and acknowledging our feel-

ings is a positive coping strategy. It’s ok and perfectly normal to say, “Life is difficult right now.” Honoring our individual losses allows us to also seek out and recognize moments of gratitude in the midst of our pain. A little gift left on our front porch, walking the dog, listening to nature, watching an old classic movie, a long conversation with a dear friend. It’s ok to grieve our individual losses while allowing ourselves joy in the midst of our grief.

It’s so important for us to focus on what we can control in a world that seems wildly out of control. Ritual speaks when words fail. Ritual, symbol, and connection help us on our grief journey. As we shelter in place, we are missing many of our daily rituals and connection with others; our gyms and fitness studios, clubs, favorite restaurants, sports, family gatherings. Find ways to incorporate new rituals into your life. Facetime, Zoom or Skype with your golf buddies, join a free online yoga class, utilize technology to virtually share a favorite meal with family and friends. As I’m writing this, I am looking forward to my first-ever “virtual happy hour” with my neighbors.

As the whole world grieves, let’s allow our collective need for patience and grace. Don’t minimize your losses. Stay connected - practice physical distancing yet maintain social connectedness. We are resilient, we will get through this, and it will transform us. It’s our “new normal.”

Stay well and take care of yourself.

COVID-19: How Seniors Can Cope How the Young Can Help

“Mary,” a City of Hope patient and a 70-something grandmother from Beverly Hills, worries that COVID-19 and the calls to practice social distancing may actually make things worse for many seniors who already lack the close personal connections they desperately need.

“Ijust wish that people would not think that older people are invisible or incompetent,” she said. “I think that many of us seniors are very isolated and lonesome.”

“Eleanor,” another patient in her 80s, lives a few miles away. She feels the same, with an added concern: quickly getting up to speed on the latest technology.

“I am trying to stay positive and be kind. Not to say that it always works for me,” she said. “I had a real meltdown last week, prompted by my frustrations with the computer, the new reliance on Zoom and other sites that I find difficult to deal with.”

As we all adapt to the new normal of sheltering in place and keeping our distance, experts say older Americans need extra care and vigilance, not only for medical reasons but for emotional ones too. People over 60 have diminished immune systems, putting them at greater risk of contracting COVID-19 and suffering more if they do. Many seniors may also have underlying health conditions — such as cancer, diabetes or cardiovascular disease — that can make a bout with this virus more dangerous.

But it’s the risk to seniors’ mental and emotional well-being that most concerns William Dale, M.D., Ph.D., director of City of Hope’s Center for Cancer and Aging Research and

chair of the Department of Supportive Care Medicine. It’s also why he dislikes the term “social distancing.”

“Those two words should never be together,” he said. “The key is physical distancing. You mustn’t stop being social. We need to maintain emotional connections even if we can’t be physically close, because isolation can be a terrible thing, leading to depression and cutting folks off from the help they need.”

Dale wants to see all people — young and old — increase their connections to one another, taking advantage of available technology, matching it to each person’s capabilities. Not every older adult can figure out a Zoom

video conference, for example, but there’s no reason not to pick up the phone and talk to them, or send an email. To reach the un-savvy, antitech types, Dale recommends a secret weapon.

“Use the grandkids!” he said. “Ask them to check in” with grandma and grandpa, and watch what happens. “The grandparents will be motivated to learn the new technology to stay connected with the kids.”

And whenever possible, find ways to maintain face-to-face interaction. Perhaps hugs and kisses can’t happen right now, but seeing friends and loved ones from 6 feet away and with other proper precautions can still mean a lot.

“Mary” and her family have figured this out.

“When one grandchild came home [from an overseas trip], she stood on the sidewalk and we were on the porch so we could share love and throw kisses,” she said.

And “Eleanor” makes a point of reaching out.

“We must dig into ourselves and find more love to give away, espe cially at this time,” she said, “So I decided to give gifts to someone twice a week, like a delivery of piz za or fruit, and to send at least two emails or phone calls every day to friends.”

IMPORTANCE OF CONNECTION

Dale knows from personal experience — as a young resident at a VA hospital and in his current City of Hope job — the importance of personal contact. He remembers how disappointed some of his outpatient older veterans would be when he’d tell them, “You’re doing OK, no need to come in this week.”

“I was stunned,” he recalled, by the way they’d argue, ‘But I do need to see you! I need to talk to you!’

“It took me a while to recognize just how important it was to them to make a regular connection.”

He encounters similar challenges as City of Hope attempts to balance the infection risks of close contact with the emotional needs of each individual patient. Who should come in? Who can be better served with a telemedicine session? Who should get a home visit by a nurse? The staff uses a special assessment to help make those decisions, analyzing each patient’s unique needs and vulnerabili-

ties, including the strength of their social networks and support systems.

Dale feels a heightened sense of responsibility now, in the face of this crisis, more determined than ever to do the right, meaningful thing for each patient. He hopes the day never comes when care is narrowly “triaged,” with seniors’ chronological age and physical condition placing them at the back of the line. “Disadvantages must never become a reason or excuse to further disadvantage people,” he said.

DO THESE THREE THINGS

He’s urging every older person to do three things, right now:

“First,” he counseled, “if you do go out, remember that physical distance. Second, find ways to remain emotionally connected to friends and family. Don’t be afraid to reach out. Don’t worry about ‘bothering’ them. They want to hear from you. And third, identify what brings you peace in these anxious times — walking, meditation, whatever works for you.”

He has another list for young people with elders in their lives.

“Give a call, check in, make a visit, not in an infantilizing way, but in a ‘Hey, how you doin?’ way. Reminisce with them. Sharing happy memories goes a very long way. And if you haven’t already, run through their medical scenarios. Do they have all the medications they need? Enough food? Their doctors’ phone numbers? Make sure.”

One last thing. Dale wants all of us to carefully think about our actions, because they will matter for a long time.

“Let’s have a sense of the moment,” he advised. “This is a historic event.

“How will we feel, six months from now, based on what we do today?”

Why Repipe when you can ?

Lead-Free, Leak-Free Pipe Protection

It is safe to say that I know nothing about pipes. I know a little about drywall, and some about framing; my husband has his general contractor’s license so I’ve picked up a few nuggets of knowledge over the years - albeit in conversation, not in practice.

Pipes, however, are a complete mystery. I have family who live on the East Coast, where pipes seem to burst with some degree of frequency in the winter, but that is the extent of my experience via six degrees of separation. Since our family moved into our “new” home in San Juan Capistrano a few years ago, we have since become something of an expert on experts: those who do and don’t know anything about pipes. There are a bunch of things I can now catch you up on: leaks, sprinkler lines, lead testing. But truly, all you need to know is this: In many cases, ePIPE can have your pipes restored the same day without displacing you from your home.

Topping my list of folks I’d call expert, ePIPE has been in business since 1999. With over 40 international and US-based patents, the company has contracts with the US Department of Defense, several counties across the States, schools, HOA’s, and thousands of individual homeowners nationwide.

Jason Houck, National Sales Director notes “twenty years ago this process was developed to be more convenient, less destructive, longer lasting, and healthier. Now it’s a patented, proven process used around the globe.” Traditional systems wreak havoc on a home, tearing up floors, walls, and ceilings. To get to the pipe, you have to get everything else out of the way: and then to replace the pipe, you have to remove what is there. “Instead of re-piping, we restore pipes in place. Many homes can be completed in a day, with the water going back on in a number of hours.”

Pool piping, fire sprinkler systems, water lines - ePIPE deals with it all. They’ll even test for lead and remediate as a LeadSmart® Service provider. Any number of factors can lead to corrosion in a system, often in as little as two years after installation. Any number of factors can lead to pinhole or slab leaks. So what happens next? If your pipes were simply failing due to changing water chemistry, perhaps you’re wondering if there is a better pipe? Turns out the restoration of your pressurized system can be as simple as drying, cleaning and applying ePIPE's patented epoxy coating. “The cleaning process prepares the internal pipe surface for proper bonding,” says Jason. “A bit like sanding before you paint.”

In researching what ePIPE has to offer in terms of the process, I don’t see the word drilling, or destruction, or demolition anywhere. Taking care of

a problem once it begins is one thing, but ensuring that you won’t have that problem for years down the road is entirely different.

Restored piping protects against corroding and pitting, in turn reducing copper and lead leaching.

“Because there is no need to destroy walls, ceilings, or floors, you save a significant amount of money in reconstruction costs,” says Jason. “I’ll keep saying it: we do the work without the mess and expense.” Ranked in the top 1% of over 300,000 California contractors, ePIPE is here to ensure your pipes deliver the way they were made to. That’s really all I need to know.

Creating Outdoor Living that Complement Your Family’s Lifestyle & Home’s Personality

Life. Organized.

Classy Closets’ unique, custom solutions for the home and office can instantly double or even triple your storage space.

Closet organization is something of an oxymoron at my house. Same goes for my home office. I actually do know where everything is in the stacks of paper that perpetually reside atop my desk, but good luck having anyone else make rhyme or reason of my filing “system.”

I’m clearly a candidate for the handiwork of a company like Classy Closets – if it’s a matter of function or simply

a desire to have your mess aesthetically addressed, Classy Closets will customize your work/life space with made-toorder cabinetry and organization systems for your home office, garage, bedroom, laundry room, pantry, media centers, wallbeds and more.

Think you can’t afford to bring in the professionals? Classy Closets, which has served all of Orange County and

San Diego since 2003, offers organization options for virtually every budget – from basic white melanine to solid wood cabinetry.

“Nothing we do is cookie cutter,” says Company CFO Gary Pavitt. “Although Classy Closets is a franchise, we’re not governed by the rules that typically dictate processes of typical franchise operations – particularly with regard to the materials and mounting systems we use. What works in terms of style and function at a home in Tucson, for instance, wouldn’t necessarily translate to a house in Huntington Beach. So we have the freedom to customize our work to our client’s specific needs and desires.”

Another differentiator is that Gary and his team manufacture their products right here in Southern California, which affords them the ability to offer their clients a broader range of product options at a level of quality that is “second to none.” And because they are “hands-on” from design consultation to manufacture and installation, Gary and his staff pride themselves on providing unparalleled customer service.

“What’s really fun is having the ability to create the products in-house,” says Gary. “I really enjoy introducing new ways to make things better, bringing in new products and keeping up with the latest trends in the industry. We go out of our way to keep our customers satisfied … that’s what makes it all worthwhile. As in any business, your customers are golden and we’ve been very fortunate that a large percentage of our business is in referrals.”

Repeat customers Marta and Mike Fowler of San Diego say that Classy

Closets is a “dream company - one that not only delivers beautiful craftsmanship, but also that elusive quality of excellent service. Every good cliché regarding their work applies.”

“This is our second home that Classy Closets has refined to meet all our storage needs, from closets to garage, from bathroom storage to entertainment center. And they never try to oversell, giving honest recommendations for products, charging fair prices within reach,” says Marta. “Their creative solutions and impeccable workmanship combine to make functional pieces we love living with. We have only one warning: Classy Closets is addictive, and you will find yourself wanting to spread the good news.”

In a letter to Gary’s business partner Kate Monaghan, Carlsbad-based Interior Designer Karen Wirrig echoes the Fowler’s sentiment and adds that “my new master closet is beautiful and your attention to detail is evident. I also want to commend your installation crew. They were on time, tidy, polite, and did excellent work … I will wholeheartedly recommend your company to all my clients. It has been a pleasure to work with you all.”

The Proof is in the Paint with ONE WAY PAINTING

Ralph Waldo Emerson famously said “who you are speaks so loudly I cannot hear what you’re saying.” Keeping this quote in mind has served me well over the years, particularly in choosing friends … and when seeking out the services of professionals. In my opinion, integrity isn’t a word heard often enough in the business world. Competitive, certainly.

But unfortunately phrases like “bottom-line oriented,” “unscrupulous,” even “cutthroat” have cropped up in the vernacular when hearing home improvement gone wrong stories from fellow homeowners. That’s why it was so refreshing to come across Jeff McCabe and his Orange County-based One Way Painting.

In business since 1976, Jeff and his team serve all of the OC and specialize in interior and exterior residential and commercial painting. They swear by the rules of professionalism: “no cutting corners. No cheap materials. We pay attention to every detail, and never call a job complete until the customer is completely satisfied.”

Some might call it good Christian values. Others might say it’s simply good

business. But for the last 42 years, working from the heart has earned One Way Painting such a respected reputation in the industry that the vast majority of their work comes through repeat customers or referrals from repeat customers. The company’s success isn’t merely rooted in customer service though. Boasting a superior knowledge of avail able product on the market and hiring the most profes sional crews in the business also goes a long way.

“Our reputation speaks for itself; but if it didn’t, we have 16 satis fied employees on our perma nent payroll who would put a hand

up in defense of the standards we set,” says Jeff. Standards which were born and bred through a commitment to ethical business practices and hard work. In 2001, Jeff teamed up with seasoned professional Ron Bartz as a journeyman, then took over the company when Ron retired, and has been growing it ever since.

In 2009, Jeff took the pair of three-man crews and expanded the operation to encompass six crews, two office staff, and a project manager who oversees jobs, right alongside the man with the plan himself.

“We currently have four trucks on the road and I’d like a full fleet someday. I’d like to leave a legacy for my daughters, and that means more than just cans of paint and a warehouse full of equipment and materials.” To Jeff, it means taking care of his employees, taking care of his family: taking care of business. The hope is that One Way Painting becomes a household

name, for its quality of work and quality of values.

My husband and I can happily attest to both. When we moved into our home in San Juan Capistrano five years ago, we acquired quotes for exterior painting from several contractors, but were particularly impressed with Jeff and his crew. Prior to starting work at our home, Jeff came by in person to go over what the job would entail and answered all of our questions. His team showed up right on

time the first day - and each subsequent day - and at the end of each day everything was cleaned up before they left.

“We pride ourselves on working with a team of long-term employees - we do not hire off the street,” says Jeff. “We guarantee our work and do not require payment till the job is completed and the customer is completely pleased with our work.”

Jeff and his crew delivered on these promises and more than exceeded our expectations - the result was outstanding work, a job completed on time and on budget and defined by unparalleled customer service (Kelly in his office was hyper-responsive to our inquiries during the estimating process and followed up immediately upon completion of the job to ensure that we were satisfied with the results and our overall experience of working with One Way Painting). We were so pleased with the work that when we decided to update our kitchen by painting our cabinets and adding hardware (the job is scheduled to start two weeks from the date of this writing so look for a future testimonial feature), we were confident that One Way Painting would be the one and only call we would need to make.

Their attention to detail is found from start to finish. For exterior projects, they begin by power washing to clean and remove any loose paint, mildew or mold. Then the patching: with stucco, trenching around the foundations and priming with an acrylic. They’ll treat your wood siding, eaves, fascia, windows. Main doors, garage doors, trim. Even wrought iron, or other specialty surfaces like patio covers and fences. Most work depends on the client’s preference: semi-gloss, hi-gloss enamel, acrylic, or oil finish. Inside walls see flat, matte, eggshell, satin, semi, or hi-gloss. If you have natural wood cabinets and they need refinishing, One Way’s crew will see to it that they look new again. Also licensed and bonded as commercial painters, Jeff’s crew has been making businesses and their buildings look new again for 42 years. With a free on-site estimate, your custom needs are sure to have a custom solution. No deposits required, and “no surprises along the way,” Jeff is quick to add.

“I think at the end of the day what sets us apart is taking our time with each and every customer that comes our way,” says Jeff. “We run a business like every person we interact with is family.” They may not be the cheapest out there, but then that wouldn’t fly in Emerson’s eyes, and not in Jeff’s either. “Our business is based on the Christian ethic of treating every customer with honesty and integrity. Every job is done ‘as unto the Lord.’ Does this mean we’re perfect? No. It does mean that we strive to do the best painting job possible.”

Taxation, Investments and Financial Well-Being during the COVID-19 Crisis

Iwanted to share my latest family photo to remind us all of what is important, our family and health. I hope all of you are staying strong physically and mentally during this time. The recent economic challenges and governmental changes remind me why I have a practice that is centered on taxation, investments and financial well-being.

Access to information is easily available…however, it takes a professional with experience to interpret, direct and provide perspective on these changes to provide clarity, calmness and a path to success.

Hopefully, you find my articles of benefit. Here are some current thoughts on a variety of topics.

1. If you are a business owner or sole proprietor, you can apply for a Payroll Protection Program (PPP) loan. Although the first pot of money has already been committed, I anticipate the SBA Loan Administration will provide future borrowing opportunities. We can prepare your loan applications and guide you through the constantly updated changes in this loan program.

2. Once you receive your PPP loan amount, pay careful attention to the eight weeks after receipt so you can take the necessary steps for your loan to be partially or fully tax-free and non-reimbursable. More guidance on how to do this will be forthcoming.

3. If you are forced to access your IRA or pension account, new rules are in place so you can avoid the IRS 10% premature penalty if you are under age 59.5 as a Coronavirus Related Distribution. Pension plan loans have now been increased from a maximum of $50,000 up to the lesser of $100,000 or your plan balance. The 3 year loan payment schedule starts on the day after the distribution was received.

4. For Sole Proprietors and Business Owners: Contact us to see if we can help you access these pension loans by transferring your IRA accounts into a newly created pension plan account. Remember, a loan might be more beneficial than a taxable IRA distribution especially since you are paying the interest into your own pension account.

5. Visit the IRS website at www.irs.gov to click on “Get Coronavirus Tax Relief”. Get answers to the Economic Impact Payments ($1,200 for adults and $500 for children) including a link to “Check your payment status”.

6. Use this idle time to pull your tax information and get it to your CPA who is still hard at work. There are many tax planning opportunities available with the recent tax changes and your CPA can only plan when he/she has your information.

7. Consider funding tax-deductible IRA and pension contributions for tax year 2019 when you are in a higher tax bracket. You can always distribute these funds via a taxable distribution or a loan at a lower tax bracket, if applicable, in tax year 2020. IRA and H.S.A. contributions must be made by July 15th and pension contributions by the extended deadline for the return.

8. Individuals with a Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) from their IRA or pension account can skip the distribution for tax year 2020. Additionally, new rules allow individuals who have already taken out their 2020 RMD to roll the money back into the account within 60 days of the distribution to eliminate the taxable event and allow your money a chance to rebound from the recent market decline. If the distribution was made April 1st or later, you now have until July 15th to roll your money back.

9. The IRS recently decreased the time frame you can stretch out income recognition out of your IRA account. This change, coupled with the strong prospects of increasing tax rates in the future, can alter your tax planning. Consideration should be given to purchasing life insurance to cover the increased tax burden being passed down to future generations.

THE VALUE OF A CPA FINANCIAL ADVISOR

Some things in life are better when combined with other things. Peanut butter is great, but better with jelly. S’mores are wonderful, but somehow tastier when eaten next to a campfire. Mobile phones are indispensable, but incrementally improve with every added app. This idea holds true with financial advice as well. CPAs and financial advisors are important and valuable resources in their own respects toward ensuring a sound financial future, but they’re even better when they’re both the same person.

The reason for this is simple; sound investment advice must be done with consideration of tax implications, as the cost of not doing so can be significant. Likewise, good tax planning often involves taking advantage of investment opportunities that become evident during the tax preparation process. Only the CPA Financial Advisor can ensure that these interdependent objectives are executed on successfully

According to a study involving 42,000 advisors by Envestnet, a leading investment platform provider, the “value added” of using a financial advisor is roughly 2% per year. The added value of a CPA/tax management is another 1% per year. The study breaks down the added value coming from 5 core areas:

The following highlights more tangibly describe how the value of a CPA financial advisor can enhance your financial plan.

Tax Savings = Enhanced Investment Returns

When considering the financial plan for one’s entire life, one should make tax savings as much of a priority as the selection of investment and retirement products. Tax savings simply can have too tremendous a positive impact on maximizing your retirement nest egg to ignore. And its importance and value generally increases proportionally with your marginal tax rate. This is especially true today, given the generally rich valuations and low yields of most traditional investment options.

Tax Management = Tax Savings

As the value of your taxable investments grow, so does the importance of utilizing tax management to minimize taxes. Whereas many financial advisors may list these offerings, you can count on the CPA financial advisor to ensure that tax management is being performed.

High Frequency of Interaction = Better Financial Maintenance

Another important ingredient to a sound financial plan is maintenance. Financial plans are snapshots in time that require

periodic updates. Long-term impacts of near-term events such as career, family and preference changes need to be incorporated into the plan when they occur. So, frequency of interaction is paramount to good maintenance. And here again, the tax professional is, unfortunately like taxes, with you year in and year out. Hence, maintenance of a financial plan by a CPA financial advisor is a natural fit.

COVID-19 Financial Assistance Relief Resources

The programs and initiatives in the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act that was just passed by Congress are intended to assist business owners with whatever needs they have right now. When implemented, there will be many new resources available for small businesses, as well as certain nonprofits and other employers. This guide provides information about the major programs and initiatives that will soon be available from the Small Business Administration (SBA) to address these needs, as well as some additional tax provisions that are outside the scope of SBA. To keep up to date on when these programs become available, please stay in contact with your local Small Business Administration (SBA) District Office, which you can locate here.

Struggling to get started? The following questions might help point you in the right direction. Do you need:

Capital to cover the cost of retaining employees? Then the Paycheck Protection Program might be right for you.

A quick infusion of a smaller amount of cash to cover you right now? You might want to look into an Emergency Economic Injury Grant.

To ease your fears about keeping up with payments on your current or potential SBA loan? The Small Business Debt Relief Program could help.

SMALL BUSINESS PAYROLL PROTECTION PROGRAM

The Paycheck Protection Program provides small businesses with funds to pay up to 8 weeks of payroll costs including benefits. Funds can also be used to pay interest on mortgages, rent, and utilities. Funds are provided in the form of loans that will be fully forgiven when used for payroll costs, interest on mortgages, rent, and utilities (due to likely high subscription, at least 75% of the forgiven amount must have been used for payroll). Loan payments will also be deferred for six months. No collateral or personal guarantees are required. Neither the government nor lenders will charge small businesses any fees. Forgiveness is based on the employer maintaining or quickly rehiring employees and maintaining salary levels. Forgiveness will be reduced if full-time headcount declines, or if salaries and wages decrease. Info: www.sba.gov

COVID-19 ECONOMIC INJURY DISASTER LOAN

The SBA’s Economic Injury Disaster Loan program provides small businesses with working capital loans of up to $2 million that can provide vital economic support to small businesses to help overcome the temporary loss of revenue they are experiencing. The loan advance will provide economic relief to businesses that are currently experiencing a temporary loss of revenue. Funds will be made available within three days of a successful application, and this loan advance will not have to be repaid.

Under this program: The SBA will also pay the principal and interest of new 7(a) loans issued prior to September 27, 2020. SBA Programs - Scams and Fraud Alerts

Source:

Office of the Inspector General

The Office of Inspector General recognizes that we are facing unprecedented times and is alerting the public about potential fraud schemes related to economic stimulus programs offered by the U.S. Small Business Administration in response to the Novel Coronavirus Pandemic (COVID-19).

The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act), the largest financial assistance bill to date, includes provisions to help small businesses. Fraudsters have already begun targeting small business owners during these economically difficult times. Be on the lookout for grant fraud, loan fraud, and phishing.

SCAMS AND FRAUD SCHEMES

Grants

• SBA does not initiate contact on either 7a or Disaster loans or grants. If you are proactively contacted by someone claiming to be from the SBA, suspect fraud.

Loans

• If you are contacted by someone promising to get approval of an SBA loan, but requires any payment up front or offers a high interest bridge loan in the interim, suspect fraud.

• SBA limits the fees a broker can charge a borrower to 3% for loans $50,000 or less and 2% for loans $50,000 to $1,000,000 with an additional ¼% on amounts over $1,000,000. Any attempt to charge more than these fees is inappropriate.

• If you have a question about getting a SBA disaster loan, call 800659-2955 or send an email to disastercustomerservice@sba.gov.

• If you have questions about other SBA lending products, call SBA’s Answer Desk at 800-827-5722 or send an email to answerdesk@sba. gov.

Phishing

• If you are in the process of applying for an SBA loan and receive email correspondence asking for PII, ensure that the referenced application number is consistent with the actual application number.

• Look out for phishing attacks/scams utilizing the SBA logo. These may be attempts to obtain your personally identifiable information (PII),to obtain personal banking access, or to install ransomware/malware on your computer.

• Any email communication from SBA will come from accounts ending with sba.gov.

• The presence of an SBA logo on a webpage does not guaranty the information is accurate or endorsed by SBA. Please cross-reference any information you receive with information available at www. sba.gov.

Report Fraud

Report any suspected fraud to OIG’s Hotline at 800-767-0385 or online at, https://www.sba.gov/ about-sba/oversight-advocacy/ office-inspector-general/officeinspector-general-hotline.

It’s disconcerting enough to be living in these uncertain times. Trying to understand Medicare if you’re needing to enroll now can be even more challenging; the Social Security office is closed to appointments, the community meetings that educate you about your Medicare options are postponed for now.

I’m writing this article on April 2. I truly hope that by the time this goes to print the “shelter in place” order will be lifted. But if not, read on.

First off, insurance is considered an “essential business.” My office is open for appointments. It’s just me, I take my temperature every day, wear gloves while pumping gas and going to the grocery store and follow all recommended precautions. While it’s not necessary to meet face to face for a Medicare appointment, it certainly makes explaining your options easier with visual aids and materials created by the insurance companies that I contract with.

Phone appointments are on the uptick however, and I completely understand someone’s desire to stay home and try to navigate the waters of Medicare over the phone. It is necessary to have access to a computer to do a phone appointment successfully. My client worksheet that we normally review face to face is emailed to you for us to do over the phone. Once we narrow down what Medicare option is best for you, I email you those

materials from the selected insurance provider and we review that over the phone. If you already have your Medicare ID number, I can then enroll you over the phone as well.

If you don’t have your Medicare card yet, I can send you the information to enroll yourself into Medicare online, or, if you are past 65 and needing to go onto Medicare due to losing your group insurance (or simply deciding that Medicare is a better option for you than group insurance).

If you are needing to activate your Medicare after your initial enrollment period for Medicare (cut off is the last day of the month 3 months after the month of your birthday) then there currently is a hiccup .

There’s a form that needs to be signed off on by your group insur-

ance offering from your current/past employer in order to activate the Part B portion of Medicare to become full “Medicare beneficiary”. Typically, you would walk that form, along with another one that just you fill out, into the Social Security office nearest to you. The hiccup is that currently these offices are closed. So, that means snail mail is your option. This will add weeks to the activation process (and I’m trying to speculate positively).

So, if this scenario applies to you, don’t delay, get the ball rolling to apply for Medicare today. I’m here to help, in person or over the phone. Also, I’m happy to answer any questions you have without scheduling any type of an appointment. Feel free to call me, 7 days a week.

Fleming, MD, Board-Certified Dermatologist

FLEMING DERMATOLOGY & AESTHETIC CENTER 23141 Moulton Parkway, Suite 110, Laguna Hills | (949) 916-5956

There are three main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Because each has many different appearances, it is important to know the early warning signs.

Look especially for change of any kind. Do not ignore a suspicious spot simply because it does not hurt. Skin cancers may be painless, but dangerous all the same. If you notice one or more of the warning signs, see a board-certified dermatologist right away, preferably one who specializes in diseases of the skin.

ACTINIC KERATOSIS

An actinic keratosis (AK) is a crusty, scaly growth caused by damage from exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. An AK is considered a precancer because if left alone, it could develop into a skin cancer. AKs are the product of a lifetime accumulation of UV damage and typically appear on areas most commonly exposed sun, such as the backs of the hands, forearms, face, neck, and scalp.

SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells arising in the epidermis, the skin’s outermost layer. SCCs often look like scaly red patches, crusty bumps, warts, or elevated growths with a central depression. SCCs may appear suddenly and some forms are tender to touch. They can become disfiguring and sometimes deadly if allowed to grow. More than 1 million cases of SCC are diagnosed each year in the U.S., which translates to about 115 cases diagnosed every hour. Incidence has increased by 200 percent in the past three decades in the U.S., and more than 15,000 Americans die each year from this type of skin cancer.

BASAL CELL CARCINOMA

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most frequently occurring form of all cancers, with more than 4 million cases of diagnosed in the U.S. each year. BCCs may look like open sores, red patches, pink growths, shiny bumps, or scars. Any skin lesion that doesn’t heal, or bleeds with even gentle trauma, such as drying with a towel, is concerning for a BCC.

MELANOMA

Melanoma is a very dangerous form of skin cancer. Melanoma is caused mainly by intense, occasional UV exposure (frequently leading to sunburn), especially in those who are genetically predisposed to the disease. An estimated 178,560 cases of melanoma are diagnosed in the U.S. each year and is fatal for an estimated 9,320 of these patients. Fortunately, if melanoma is recognized and treated early, it is almost always curable.

WHAT PATIENTS NEED TO KNOW

1. Everyone needs to perform a self-skin exam once a month.

2. Melanoma can appear anywhere on the skin, including the palms/soles, under your nails, and places...for most, have never seen the light of day (genitalia). For this reason, it is important to look everywhere. Lock the bathroom door, get out a hand mirror, and check, it could save your life.

3. What to look for: ABCDEs, and an ugly duckling

A - Asymmetry: If I draw a line down the middle, do the sides match?

B - Border: Is there a nice crisp border, or does the mole melt into the surrounding skin?

C - Color: Moles should be one color, one shade of brown. Is there a variety of shades or additional colors, such as black, red, white, or blue?

D - Diameter: Any mole larger than 6mm, ie the head of a pencil eraser, has a higher risk of becoming melanoma.

E - Evolution: Has it changed?

F - The Ugly Duckling Sign: Most people have a “signature mole,” their own personal mole appearance and architecture. Is there a mole that seems different from all the others?

4. Everyone needs a full body skin exam by a board-certified dermatologist once a year, more frequently if you have a family history of skin cancer, a personal history of skin cancer, or live in an area with substantial sunshine.

Staying Healthy

PREVENTION IS KEY

Regardless of whether the threat is a simple cold or the flu, or Covid-19, there are several things you can do to protect yourself from unnecessary downtime.

PROPER HAND WASHING

This gets top billing because of its true effectiveness in preventing illness. The most important aspects of hand washing are the length of time (at least 20 seconds) and the amount of friction you use, not the water temperature. In fact, warm water is better than hot, as hot water dries the skin, leaving more microscopic openings on its surface. In cases where hand washing is not practical, keep hand sanitizer available. Alcohol-based hand sanitizers can also contribute to drying of the skin, so be diligent about moisturizing.

FLUIDS AND MORE FLUIDS

Staying well hydrated clearly benefits our skin, the largest organ of our immune system. The advice to stay adequately hydrated is even more important in the cold, dry months of winter.

EAT YOUR VITAMINS

A balanced diet, which includes all food groups, gives your immune system the resources it needs when it faces a challenging virus.

EIGHT HOURS OF SLEEP

Research continues to prove how vital this is to every part of our well-being. It affects everything from our ability to resist illness to managing weight.

HANDS AND FACE

It is important to keep your hands away from your face-particularly the eyes, mouth, and nose, which are favorite points of entry for viruses. Start paying attention to how frequently you touch your face. Break the habit, and you could reduce your risk of colds and flu this season by more than 50 percent.

TAKEOUT & CURBSIDE PICKUP

The Crisis Kitchen Coalition

Serving citizens through the duration of the COVID-19 outbreak

The Crisis Kitchen Coalition was an idea that formed literally overnight, according to James Parris, owner of the San Juan Capistrano-based Sweet Home Capistrano Bakery.

Immediately following the “stayat-home” order and temporary suspension of business as usual in our community, Parris teamed up with fellow San Juan Capistrano restaurateurs Marty Wells (owner of Bad to the Bone BBQ) and Ricardo Beas (owner of Ricardo’s Place) to launch an organization dedicated to providing meals completely free of charge to the the community’s

residents through the duration of the COVID-19 outbreak during weekend “drive up" and go events held in the parking lot of the Marbella Plaza (31115 Rancho Viejo Rd.). Residents can pick up two meals per car.

"We decided that we should put our personal interests aside,” says Parris. “It was more important to us to help the community in which our restaurants have thrived. With help from our dedicated staff, selfless volunteers, generous sponsors and private donations from the citizens of San Juan Capistrano, we have been able to keep employees working and provide jobs to others. It is our goal to ensure that no one in San Juan Capistrano goes hungry, especially in this time of crisis.”

“It is our goal to ensure that no one in San Juan Capistrano goes hungry, especially in this time of crisis.”

As of the weekend of April 17th and 18th, volunteers of this grassroots effort have served well over 30,000 meals completely free of charge and Parris says the group plans to continue "until the crisis is over and everyone is back to their lives before the outbreak. The Crisis Kitchen Coalition will serve whenever there is demand, whether it is wildfires, earthquakes, floods and any other need that might arise.”

Laguna Hills Chef Among Those

Offering

Free Meals

For Healthcare Workers

Agroup of Orange County chefs is offering those on the front line at local Urgent Care and Emergency Rooms a free meal to take to their family.

As their way of showing appreciation, Laguna Hills-based Break of Dawn Chef/Owner Dee Nguyen, OC Baking Company Baker/Owner Dean Kim, and Crema Artisan Cafe Baker/Owner Tarit Tanjasiri will offer these local heroes the opportunity to pick up homemade chicken noodle soup, a loaf of fresh-baked bread, and a decadent gourmet cookie. Also involved in this act of generosity to acknowledge the hard work and long hours put in by our local healthcare workers, are Glenn Tanaka of Tanaka Farms and Anne

Cutner of Solutions for Urban Agriculture, who have donated their fresh produce for the chicken noodle soup. This team has already made deliveries to local care centers and are attempting to make their meals available to more who may not have time to pick up food or make meals after long

shifts. Those interested in assisting in feeding local healthcare workers who are keeping our community safe, may contact Dee Nguyen at dee.breakofdawn@gmail.com. Any assistance will be accepted, from hands-on kitchen assistance, to product and monetary donations.

Operation: Nailing It for Healthcare Workers

Salon Industry Businesses Donate Thousands of Masks and Gloves

Realizing that front-line healthcare workers were running out of personal protective items that many in the beauty industry use in their salons, Tam Nguyen (president of Advance Beauty College) and Johnny Ngo (president of Whale Spa and Skyline Beauty Supply) gave away their entire collective supply of masks and gloves. But they wanted to do more.

The pair of second-generation owners of small family businesses started by their Vietnamese American refugee parents in OC enlisted the help of Christie Nguyen (of the Tustin-based Studio 18 Nail Bar) and Ted Nguyen (who manages public relations for the Orange County

Transportation Authority) to launch “Operation: Nailing It for Healthcare Workers.” Since then, a number of volunteers and donors have joined the philanthropic project, which delivers donated supplies “to all OC hospitals we can get into,” including St. Jude Medical Center, Children’s Hospital Orange County and West Anaheim Medical Center.

Those with supplies are encouraged to donate at either of Advance Beauty College’s locations: 10121 Westminster Avenue in Garden Grove and 25332 Mcintyre St. in Laguna Hills.

Navigating Medicare During the Pandemic:

It’s disconcerting enough to be living in these uncertain times. Trying to understand Medicare if you’re needing to enroll now can be even more challenging; the Social Security office is closed to appointments, the community meetings that educate you about your Medicare options are postponed for now. This was written April 2nd. My hope is that by the time this goes to print the “shelter in place” order will be lifted. But if not, read on.

Insurance is considered an “essential business”. My office is open for appointments. Phone appointments are on the uptick, and I completely understand someone’s desire to stay home and try to navigate the waters of Medicare over the phone. It is necessary to have access to a computer to do a phone appointment successfully.

If you are needing to activate your Medicare after your initial enrollment period for Medicare (cut off is the last day of the month 3 months after the month of your birthday) There’s a form that needs to be signed off on by your group insurance offering from your current/past employer in order to activate the Part B portion of Medicare to become full Medicare beneficiary. Typically, you would walk that form, along with another one that just you fill out, into the Social Security office nearest to you. Currently these offices are closed. Mail is your only option. This will add weeks to the activation process. So, if this scenario applies to you, don’t delay, get the ball rolling to apply for Medicare today. I’m here to help, in person or over the phone.

PERFECT CUT

"Whatever your hair needs, I desire and appreciate the opportunity to make your hair dreams come true.”

Some people are born great; some people create their own greatness.

For Victoria Vannini, creating with hair and giving her clients a style that reflects their personality and ‘true self ’ is more than just a “cut and color.”

“It begins with the consultation,” says Victoria. “I want to know about your lifestyle and career. [About] the hair products and tools you use. This is essential in evaluating the condition and texture of your hair and helps us to come to a place that is realistic - at the beginning and where we want to go for the future.”

Education is an important element to Victoria’s career. After graduating from cosmetology school, Victoria continued at the Vidal Sassoon Academy in Los Angeles. While apprenticing at the Carlton Hair Salon at Crystal Court for one year, she honed her skills with creative color and hair cutting. From there, she went on to be an educator for Paul Mitchell. She currently takes classes at the Unite Academy in Carlsbad.

1. Get frequent trims - Yes REALLY... Split ends leads to your hair losing length and strength !!!

2. Resist the urge to go Blonde (unless you are a Natural). When the cuticle of the hair is damaged from bleach, you can have more breakage or split ends.

3. Distribute the Natural Oils in your Hair... Don’t overwash, once to three times a week depending on condition and age of hair. Use a Boar bristle brush to distribute your scalp’s natural oils evenly to keep hair naturally moistened.

4. Finish your Shampoo and Conditioner with a cool rinse to seal the cuticle and strengthen your hair.

5. Avoid frequent Heat (styling tools) but when you do, use a heat protectant.

6. Eat the right foods. Feed your hair from the inside by increasing your protein intake with fish, beans and nuts.

Getting the Best from Your Child with Special Needs

Parents want what is best for their children. This is as true for parents of special needs children as it is for others.

Part of wanting what’s best for your children is also wanting the best from them. You want them to behave appropriately in public and around family. You want them to express their emotions effectively and do their best in school.

How do you go about getting the best from your child with special needs? Here are 7 tips and techniques to guide you.

1. UNDERSTAND “THE BEST” IS A CHANGING EXPECTATION

We all have an expectation of what our children should ultimately achieve. Maybe you want them to be able to verbalize their anger, rather than acting out. Or perhaps you want them to use an “indoor voice” in public, rather than yelling. It’s important to understand that children may not immediately meet those goals — but that doesn’t mean they aren’t doing their best at the time.

A child’s “best” is an ever-moving target. Today, their best may be to yell a little less loudly when they become irritated. A few months from now, their best may be to proclaim “I’m angry” rather than yelling. Shift your expectations and define “the best” as your child’s best effort right now.

2. BE CONSISTENT, EVEN WHEN FRUSTRATED

Reinforcing your child’s good behavior with kind reassurance is an excellent pathway to success. Reacting negatively to poor behaviors is far less effective and may even deter your child from displaying better behaviors. When parents get frustrated,

they sometimes slip into a negative reinforcement mode, which ruins consistency and can negatively impact the child’s progress.

It is completely normal and natural to become frustrated as a parent. What you need to avoid is letting that frustration impact the way you deal with your child’s behaviors and emotions. If you feel yourself becoming overwhelmed, take a step back, take a few deep breaths, and regroup before addressing your child. Make sure you’re taking time out to care for yourself. This can help to preemptively reduce frustration.

3. GET A CLEAR DIAGNOSIS

Some parents are afraid to move forward with the diagnostic process because they do not want their child to be labeled or categorized. However, getting a clear diagnosis for your special needs child can make it so much easier to encourage them and help them grow.

Once you understand your child’s diagnosis, you can research tactics and techniques that specifically work well for children with that diagnosis. For instance, for children diagnosed with ADD, strategies, like limiting distractions, regulating sleep patterns, and promoting waiting time, can help them develop and be their best. If you did not know your child’s diagnosis, you may not think to implement these effective and proven strategies.

The process of getting a diagnosis can be long and a bit frustrating. You may need to see several doctors and specialists. Your child may need to undergo a variety of tests. However, it

is worth persevering and getting that “official” diagnosis. It will open you up to more specific, effective strategies.

4. TRUST THE PROFESSIONALS

As the parent of a special needs child, you are ultimately the one who makes decisions about treatment and care. But it is wise to trust the professionals. Therapists, pediatricians, and educators who have spent years in school and have experience working with special needs children can offer remarkable guidance. Trust these professionals. Remember they really do take your needs (and your child’s needs) to heart.

5. STRATEGIZE WITH OTHER ADULTS IN YOUR CHILD’S LIFE

Does your child have another parent? Maybe an aunt or uncle who babysits, or perhaps an older cousin. Hold regular “meetings” with these influential adults in your child’s life.

During these meetings, update them on your child’s progress, the latest tips and techniques you have learned from your therapist, and anything else important in your child’s life and development. Keeping all the adults on the same page will allow them to more effectively encourage and support your child. The more support your child has from loving adults, the greater success they will experience.

6. CELEBRATE SUCCESSES ALONG THE WAY

Remember: Each step forward is an achievement. Celebrate these small steps, even if there is still quite a distance to go to meet your child’s goal.

Some celebrations can be small. Serve a favorite dessert the night after your child finally bring home a report card with positive comments. Follow-up with ice cream after behaving quietly and with consideration in a store. Let family and friends participate in these celebrations, too. This shows your pride and others’ support.

7. MAKE A LIST OF CARE PRIORITIES AND STICK TO THEM

You won’t perfectly adhere to every best practice and technique every day. For example, maybe you know sugar is not great, considering your child’s diagnosis, but occasionally allow a cookie. You know a good night’s sleep helps your child feel calmer the next day, but sometimes things get away from you and your child is up ’til midnight.

Progress…not perfection. Stick to routines and care practices more often than not. One way to keep practices a priority is to make a list. Start by using red ink to list the tactics you absolutely must employ each day. This can include medication delivery and avoiding sugary foods.

Then, in orange, list the tactics that are a little less vital, but still important. Follow those with blue tactics that are nice to employ, but not really essential.

Each day work your way down your list. Make sure you check off each red tactic and as many orange tactics as possible. Challenge yourself to check off the blue tactics more often, too. This strategy helps ensure that “oops” moments with your child occur less frequently, and this will help them make continual progress toward their goals.

As you employ these 7 tips and tactics, remember that each small step forward is a success. We want our children to achieve their best five or ten years from now. But we also want them to do their best every day. When you’re giving your best, it becomes a very realistic goal.

PLEASE HELP!

ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS IS LOOKING FOR THE FATHER OF THE BRIDE WHO OWNED THIS DRESS.

Afew weeks ago, a lovely gentleman came into our store with a wedding dress in his arms, looking down at the floor.

"I love your windows. Could you please feature my daughter's wedding dress in one? I would love to see it up there for all to see.”

Getting excited, I happily exclaimed "YES!”

Then the man looked up at me and explained that he lost his daughter and this was her wedding dress. Thinking of my kids, I could not imagine what he was asking and how much it must hurt him. When I looked up to meet his eyes, he was already halfway out of the door, tears in his wake.

I never got his name. I never got his daughter's name. I want to know about her and to tell my customers about her and this lovely man who gave me the honor of sharing her memory in this town of ours.

PLEASE help me find this man! I hope this window brings you some peace. It was my honor, sir!” - Diane Silverstein, Absolutely Fabulous (714) 842-1608

Indispensable Documents

Decades ago we published a piece warning parents sending their kids to college for the first time to provide their children with more than what freshmen need to pack for their lives at school.

Our article described materials the undergrads should leave at home with their parents, as well as take away to the university: every student who is over eighteen should (MUST), leave their parents with an Advance Health Care Directive, a Durable Power of Attorney for Property and Finances, and a very strongly drafted HIPAA form.

We gave out reams of these articles to parents and students, but over time, for no particular reason, the distribution flow dried up. We stopped circulating the article, except to our own clients at the workplace whom we knew had children going off to school.

Sadly, one fine young man of our acquaintance left to study on the East Coast, well equipped for his academics, but without any of the paperwork for his parents when he got sick. He went across the country, leaving his family here in Orange County without the tools to talk to doctors, hospitals, nurses, or any other health care provider when, as it tragically came to pass, he had a heart attack away from home.

The result was too painful to fully relate. Just know that even after this wonderful fellow had passed on, his

family was not able retrieve their son’s medical records to learn what precisely had taken their cherished child. Before he died, Mom and Dad could not discuss matters with the healthcare providers, who were simply following the law as provided by our Congress.

We do not want this to ever happen again. Today, in the midst of a global pandemic, it is more important than ever to have signed HIPAA authorization forms for each of your offspring so that their physicians may discuss their healthcare needs with you.

Indispensable documents you MUST have on file:

HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act): a US law preventing your contact with health plans, doctors, hospitals and other health care providers without a HIPAA form. You CANNOT plan on talking to these people WITHOUT THE HIPAA FORM on file. If they do

HIPAA Advance Health Care Directive Durable Power of Attorney

talk to you without a HIPAA authorization, they are putting themselves and their employer at risk.

ADVANCE HEALTH CARE DIREC-

TIVE: While HIPAA forms allow you to talk to the Medical people, the Advance Health Care Directive gives you the authority to direct doctors and make decisions about the student’s care when your child is not able to do so. Access to medical information is worthless without the authority to tell the doctors what to do next.

DURABLE POWER OF

ATTORNEY FOR PROPERTY AND FINANCE: Gives you authority to talk and deal with your student’s bank, his dormitory, university, employer and other entities who can sometimes help in crisis situations.

Bladder Control Can be a Problem for Women of All Ages, but There are Solutions!

Bladder control problems affect 50 million Americans and are one of the most common health issues that women face. While many people may think that the condition only affects older women, the truth is that women of all ages may have symptoms related to an overactive bladder.

Bladder control problems can also cause urine to leak. There are two main types of leakage: stress incontinence and urge incontinence. Women who have a combination of both stress and urge leakage are referred to as having mixed incontinence.

Unfortunately, whatever form it takes, the impact of bladder leakage or overactive bladder symptoms can be debilitating. Women are often too embarrassed to share their symptoms or may not be aware that there are non-surgical options out there. At Pacific Coast Urology Medical Center’s Women’s Bladder Control Center of Excellence, we offer many non-surgical solutions.

At our state-of-the-art bladder control center, we spend time with our patients to review their medical history and voiding patterns (bladder diary). We test their bladder function and review all treatments that are available for bladder control using a customized pathway that we have developed. At the end of the discussion, we help you decide what the best solution is for you.

Bladder control problems affect millions of women. It is important to know that early diagnosis and treatment leads to better outcomes. Our goal is to help educate women on the various non-invasive solutions to their bladder problems so that they can continue to enjoy their normal daily activities.

I encourage you to call our office at (888) 735.4336 to schedule a confidential consultation. To learn more and view bladder control educational videos, please visit www.pacificcoasturology.com.

When I was younger, my Mom loved to read me the book “If You Give A Mouse A Cookie.” The plot essentially revolves around an ever-growing list of to-do’s that had to be accomplished, all set into motion by the simple act of giving a mouse a cookie. This tale came back to me recently when I purchased a new television at Best Buy.

What was a simple shopping trip ended up being an adult’s version of that circular tale. If you give a grownup a television, they’ll have to measure their wall. When they measure the wall, they’ll realize they may actually

have room for a bigger television. When they buy the bigger television, they’ll find out they have no idea how to mount it to the wall. When they start mounting it to the wall, they’ll see that the power outlets are all in the wrong places. When they realize

the outlets need to be moved, they’ll call an electrician. (This could go on forever.)

Luckily for clients who have been on the receiving end of ReelTime’s patient, intelligent, and personalized

service, the rabbit hole of home automation doesn’t have to swallow you entirely. With the help of their independent certified Control4 dealer, it’s easy to update your home without upending your entire life. After all, the true luxury of an integrated entertainment system is really dependent on its ability to deliver seamless entertainment. By placing every control at your fingertips, the team at ReelTime helps homeowners manage everything from how brightly lit your family room is, to your streaming devices - all with a single remote. And best yet? You can control your whole home from the comfort of your couch- even seeing who is at the front door, without ever leaving your seat. Simple, clean, and uncluttered.

And on the home entertainment front … when you started planning for your ultimate home theater set-up and sound system, could you find the right media cabinetry for your particular space – cabinetry that wouldn’t catch on fire from the heat of the equipment, or that would simply look good in the room? Did you understand half of what the televisions, receivers and other devices could

do, and did you have anyone to hold your hand to make sure you weren’t overspending for what you wanted?

Big box retailers, the professed champions of value, are happy to sell you any home theater and sound equipment you think you might like,

and send you off to figure it out at home. That’s what they do. And that’s all they do.

If you want the home theater system that you envision, seek the services of Skip Myers and his team of experienced professionals at ReelTime to take you from start to finish for the home theater or sound system of your dreams.

“Usually there is a part of the job that you find you just can’t do by yourself,” says Skip, who has overseen the design and installation of thousands of home theater and sound systems over the course of 40-plus years in the business. “You get your brand new television home, you’re so excited, then you realize you need to move an outlet or none of the cabinets you can find will fit your space. We’re here to make sure you get the equipment that will give you what you want and the system that will work with that equipment, without leaving you to fend for yourself.”

We’re here to make sure you get the equipment that will give you what you want and the system that will work with that equipment, without leaving you to fend for yourself.

Skip opened the doors at ReelTime in 1983. Today, the technicians and designers that Skip assigns to clients are all ReelTime employees, knowledgeable in all home theater and sound technologies. First, they work closely with you to determine what you’re looking for. Then they custom design every aspect of the project, from wiring to custom-built cabinets, frames, or built-in wall designs. Finally, licensed, in-house contractors install your entertainment system with care and precision.

There are a couple of things that people may not think about when they embark upon the road to their own home entertainment system.

“You need to think about your home theater goals,” says Skip. “You don’t have to do everything at once – you can do it bit by bit – but if you know where you’re going, you’ll save money and when it’s all said and done, you’ll have exactly what you want and what you will actually use. We’re here to help you determine your goals.”

Skip is also an advocate for getting what you’ll use, which is part of the design and planning process.

“You can buy everything you want to, but if you can’t operate it, what’s the point?” he says. “There’s the television, DVD and Blue-ray; there’s the receiver, there’s Apple TV… it’s all great, but how do you get them to work together? We Install Whole House Water Filtration Systems

It’s Not Epoxy, It’s SpartaFlex!

For nearly 40 years, southern California homeowners have used Epoxy for garage and industrial floor coating projects despite its tendency to yellow, it’s soft and easy to scratch surface and it’s tendency to be permanently damaged by the hot, high performance tires found on most cars in the OC area.

Today OC homeowners don’t have to settle for Epoxy and all of its flaws anymore. SpartaFlex is an advanced, next generation 100% solids polyaspartic floor coating that gives your garage a beautiful finish that is 3x harder than epoxy, resists yellowing while also resisting permanent damage from hot tires. Perhaps best of all, SpartaFlex comes with a much better warranty than Epoxy.

Perkins Custom Coatings has been installing SpartaFlex on OC garage floors for nearly 12 years and has completed over 8,000 floors during that period of time. Its CEO and owner, Paul Frankel is considered by many to be the most knowledgeable contractor in the local market. “Unlike many of our competitors, we strive to do an onsite assessment including a moisture test for every floor coating project we install and instead of using the ‘one size fits all’ approach, we develop a coating solution that we believe will last for decades not just for a few years.”

Perkins uses only the most advanced surface preparation methods available and will either diamond grind or shot blast every floor that he installs. Old, failing, yellowed ep-

oxy coatings can also be removed during this same process. “Despite the fact that Coatings Industry requires concrete to at least be diamond ground before installing a new coating system, many of my competitors will install their coatings right over raw or pressure washed concrete just to save a few bucks - I will never do that” says Paul.

Perkins also is known for its professional and unique approach to repairing concrete cracks. “Anyone can slap some crack repair paste to cosmetically fix a crack” says Paul. A year later, when the concrete moves again and damages their brand new floor coating, the devastated homeowner will learn that this damage is not covered by the typical Epoxy warranty. “We are the only company that I know of that uses a ‘structural crack repair’ technique to fix cracks. The process is so effective we can offer our customers a warranty that can cover future damage from cracks!” says Paul.

After the surface prep is completed, a very effective moisture control primer is applied to the concrete. “This is extremely important” says Paul because for many homes built in Socal before 2005, elevated moisture vapor levels in the garage concrete can have a detrimental impact on floor coatings. Paul does a fast and non-destructive moisture test for every one of the pre-2005 homes he visits and develops a unique installation plan for each home. For newer homes, Paul and his crew can use a basic primer that dries a bit faster allowing installation of a garage floor in as little as one day!

The color chips that give the Perkins floor its legendary appearance are sandwiched between this primer and finish coat. Perkins carries the widest selection of colors and sizes in the market and uses a ‘full chip broadcast’, not a partial sprinkling of chips like many of its competitors. “The full chip broadcast gives the floor a consistent appearance and makes the floor much more durable and helps hide dirt better than the partial broadcast finish” says Paul.

Finally, Perkins installs the SpartaFlex polyaspartic finish coat and the finished garage comes to life. “Epoxy & SpartaFlex floor coatings are virtually identical in appearance when they are first installed” says Paul. “However, when you will really begin to appreciate your SpartaFlex floor is a few months down the road when you start to see problems develop with your Epoxy floor. If there was a better material on the market, I would be selling it, but there isn’t and that is why we love selling SpartaFlex.”

Making the Right Connections with Steve Carter Electric

The average American household has 45 lights in it. Cup lighting, recessed, portraiture; indoor, outdoor. Incandescent, CFL, LED. There are likely as many types of fixtures and functions in the residential electrical world as years Steve Carter Electric has been in business.

Astaple in south Orange County for the last thirty years, it isn’t hard to imagine why someone might call in the professionals at Steve Carter Electric for help wiring and all things electrical.

Dedicated to providing the best quality on every job, and investing in long-term service is the backbone of the business, and what Steve Carter himself carries into every job.

“We know that your home is more than a tangle of wires: its not the fixtures, its the connections made inside and out.” Specializing in whole house fans, lighting and electrical upgrades, repairs, back-up power, panel upgrades, landscape lighting, E.V charger installs and general

troubleshooting, there isn’t a job too complex to take on.

One of the perks of publishing South County Magazine is being able to give testimonials for local businesses that our family has personally utilized.

As a San Juan Capistrano resident blessed to live in coastal OC, I realize it’s ridiculous to refer to the unseasonable warm weather we experienced in September and October as uncomfortably “hot.” But warm air rises and our bedrooms are upstairswhere the temperature would get to the mid-80s, which would make it a little warmer than we’d like when trying to get to sleep at night.

My husband had been hankering to have a whole house fan installed after

we experienced the benefits for ourselves while visiting family friends in Northern California. With 10 minutes of turning the whole house fan on, all of the warm air had been evacuated from the home, replaced with the cooler ambient air from outside - dropping the temperature in the house by 10 degrees! He was sold. In researching local companies, we came across the Yelp 5-Star rated San Clemente-based family-owned Steve Carter Electric. We couldn’t be happier with the QuietCool whole house fan we had installed - and equally importantly, the service provided by Steve and his team of professionals and are now all set to make quick work of the warm air during our next “hot” spell.

“I knew back in high school that I wanted to learn the trade and become an electrician,” says Steve. “My Dad taught me to take pride in my workmanship, and I’ve carried that through until today. We don’t cut corners because we’d like to be your electricians for life.”
