Friendship is special and precious. It feeds our soul, comforts our spirit, and inspires our intellect. As one of life’s great joys, good friendships should be celebrated –especially ones that last a lifetime.
For Pat Beery and Shirley Forden, their friendship spans 70 years, and it all started on the campus of UCSB as members of Sigma Kappa, one of the oldest sororities in the country.
In the 1950s, UCSB was known as Santa Barbara College of the University of California. During the post-war years universities expanded access to education, especially for women. In those days, Pat says women had fewer choices. “An education gave us opportunity and independence.” For Shirley, the sorority was a vital part of her experience, “We supported each other as we chased our dreams.”
Sigma Kappa offered an important social network for members, many of whom were away from home for the first time. “We worked hard but we also had fun,” laughs Shirley. They have fond memories of their time on campus and enjoyed going to dances together. Occasionally, Pat would invite her brother along as an escort. “Of course, he loved it. I introduced him to his future wife, another one of my sorority sisters.”
Both women felt fortunate to be able to continue their education and were determined to make the most of the opportunity. Shirley graduated as an Art Major in 1955 and taught art in middle school. Pat graduated in 1956 with a degree in Early Childhood Education and became an elementary school teacher.
They are proud of their accomplishments and proud to know their example inspired future generations of women in their families. Pat’s daughter had a lengthy career as a teacher in the California public school system and Shirley’s granddaughter has recently taken up a teaching post in New York City.
Over the years, they stayed in touch socially and through the Sigma Kappa alumni association where they helped to raise money for charity. “We organized an annual Boutique Fair,” says Shirley, “it was a going concern.” The Fair offered handmade items from local artisans and craftspeople and Pat says that the focus on the community was a key to its success. “People loved it.”
The bonds of sisterhood remained strong through the years and paid

dividends again later in life. For each of them, the time came to plan their next move. Pat said once she stopped driving, she felt isolated in her own home. For Shirley, her family was anxious about her daily safety as she aged. “They we’re constantly wanting to check on me.”
The women had a mutual sorority sister who lived at The Covington in Aliso Viejo, and occasionally they would visit. “We would dine together in the on-property restaurant, and I was always so impressed by the delicious food,” says Pat.
The quality of dining and accommodations, the vibrant lifestyle and continuum of care were all important factors in the eventual decision that each women made to make their home at The Covington. Having friends already living on campus made the transition that much easier. “It almost feels like we are back at our sorority house,” Shirley says, “but with more comfortable beds!”
Since moving in, the women say they now feel much more at ease and relish the active, social opportunities that The Covington provides. “There is so much to do here,” says Pat. For Shirley, the variety of on-site facilities and The Covington’s Creative Living
philosophy of life-long learning, were also important considerations. “I so appreciate being able to continue to paint and make pottery.”
Pat, who moved in last year, has since met another old friend already living at The Covington. “I had not seen her in years. It has been so wonderful to reconnect and catch up. I know I am not the only person who has had this experience.”

Lennar Foundation Cancer Center at City of Hope Orange County, opening in Irvine this year, is more than an impressive building that will transform cancer research and treatment. It’s the fulfillment of the aspirations of a community that has come together to end cancer.
From the beginning, hope has been built deep into the foundation and every facet of the center. Construction workers, employees, and community members visiting the site have been invited to write messages of hope on the unfinished walls, concrete around the building, or floors.
Starting off a year of hope, City of Hope is offering glimpses of its comprehensive cancer center opening this year in Irvine. Each month, the world-renowned cancer treatment and research organization is unveiling a new rendering or sharing a behindthe-scenes story about the people who have helped bring the cancer center to life.
The initial glimpse is of the center’s exterior, and what is revealed are the
stories of hope literally in the structure’s foundation.
“May all those who enter this building find strength, courage and hope. May this building be filled with love, compassion, and healing.”
Those touching words are from the hands and heart of a construction worker at Lennar Foundation Cancer Center. The note was dedicated to the memory of his mother who battled lung cancer and is one of hundreds of messages of hope in the cancer center’s foundation. Though the walls are newly finished, the messages underneath will not be forgotten.
Like many, his life had been overturned by the loss of a loved one from cancer. One in three Americans
will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime and all of us know someone who has been impacted by the disease. This highlights the meaningful purpose of the work each crew member is contributing to.
Each day, 250 workers are on site, putting their hearts and souls into their work. They’ve already spent more than 320,000 hours bringing the 190,000-square-foot cancer center to life and are spurred by the knowledge that their work will benefit generations of patients and their families.
City of Hope is advancing worldrenowned cancer treatment and research by establishing a National Cancer Institute-designated campus in Orange County, bringing new cancer treatments, pioneering re-

search, and access to more than 400 physicians and 1,000 researchers and scientists who focus on only one thing – ending cancer. City of Hope offers nearly 1,000 clinical trials each year and breakthrough treatment options, all delivered by a compassionate team of experts who take a patient’s hand and never let go.
Lennar Foundation Cancer Center will offer an unprecedented range cancer services, many of which are the first of their kind for the region. It will be the home of leading cancer researchers and cancer professionals and serve as a center for innovation and compassionate, patient-focused care. Orange County’s only specialty hospital exclusively focused on treating and curing cancer will open on the Irvine site in 2025.
Patients can currently access City of Hope’s care at four Orange County locations that form a network of leadingedge cancer research and treatment.
Cancer doesn’t stand a chance. The future is hope. And it’s unfolding in Orange County. Visit cityofhope.org/OC to learn more and follow @cityofhopeoc.

Valentine’s Day without your Valentine is not going to be an easy day. There’s a darkness just to saying or typing out the idea. If this will be your first or fifteenth Valentine’s Day without your sweetheart, I am truly so sorry.
I’m hoping you’re curious about what you could do or how you could prepare yourself for the holiday. I do have some ideas and strategies that I hope will give you some courage and a plan to face the day.
I want to make it crystal clear that there are no rules or “shoulds” on this list. You need to do what feels right for you. This blog is here to give you the support and strength to acknowledge where you are and what your grief needs.
MENTAL & EMOTIONAL PREPARATION; LET’S ASK SOME QUESTIONS:
• What will the day be like? Take a few minutes now to think about what your experience of the day might be like. Will you be on social media? How will you feel seeing pictures of couples together?
If that sounds completely overwhelming, then a good plan would be to eliminate or carefully limit/ filter your time online that day (and probably the next few days as well).
• Did you have plans for this particular Valentine’s Day or special traditions?
Is there a part of the plans or tradition that you could still fulfill? If you had candlelight dinners,
you can still light your candles. If you always got milkshakes, you can still do that.
• On a day that celebrates love, do you feel you are in a place where you could celebrate yours? The word “celebrate” isn’t always a fit for people in grief and if it doesn’t work for you right now, that makes sense and is ok. If you do want to share about your relationship, write what you want to say down or share it on social media. The level of privacy and sharing is up to you – do what feels right.
• Give yourself a gift. Gifts are a huge part of the Valentine tradition. If there is a traditional gift or something you would really love to have, I would encourage you to buy that for yourself. Think of it as a gift from your loved one – they certainly would want you to have it and give you that joy.
• Don’t be afraid of memory lane but don’t force it either. Pace yourself. If you’d like to look at pictures or watch a favorite movie, do that. It might also be wise to have some less intense distractions lined up. Puzzles, gardening, sudoku, or favorite tv show marathons
can be helpful, mindless or mindful distractions.
• Create a schedule for the day. Give yourself the gift of “control” over the day. Schedules help us to move on and to know that things will end. Here are some ideas for time-slot-fillers: tea & reading for 1-hour, soothing bath with candles, 30 minute walk, favorite movie, pick up lunch, nap for 2 hours, look at photo albums for 20 minutes, call a friend, take a drive and pick up some coffee or a tasty treat, watch the sunset, *home for some classical music and takeout.
*If you do plan to leave your house before it gets dark and get home after sunset, it would be wise to leave plenty of lights on to help the darkness of the house not feel so hard to come home to.
The real secret to coping with difficult days like these is to know yourself, be intentional about what roadblocks are in front of you and create flexible and wise ways to give yourself the space and grace you need.
I hope this can be a day with some special moments for you – glimmering memories – a gratefulness for sharing a life and love with someone else.
Above all, I hope that making it through Valentine’s Day can be its own gift of hope. You are doing hard things. Be patient with yourself –you’re going through so much. And be proud of yourself – you’re making it through the hardest days.

Diane Silverstein had never heard of the show “Absolutely Fabulous” when she named her aptly-titled gifts and décor boutique in central Huntington Beach. But the fun-loving, irreverent, blonde, champagne-promoting show does give a glimpse into what makes Absolutely Fabulous such a treasure.
Absolutely Fabulous is not your runof-the-mill, Hallmark-style gift shop; they are as fun and irreverent as the show they share a name with.
The variety and uniqueness of products at Absolutely Fabulous is astounding: hand-made jewelry, Miche Bag purses (the ones where

ents sourced locally. And the piece de resistance (at least for parents in the small-children-at-home phase of life)? Kids World. And yes, it is just as awesome as it sounds. This “club within a club” is a place specially designed for children from infants to pre-teens with an array of age-specific activities, amenities, fitness, and entertainment. The club’s unique video camera coverage allows parents to “check-in” on their youngsters from monitors conveniently located throughout the club.
I was chatting with a friend the other day about gyms. He was bemoaning the era of headphones: AirPods, Beats, you name it. I laughed at first because it seemed like such a funny complaint: I don’t like gyms because people wear headphones. But then it dawned on me as he continued to talk, that he was really referring to the missed sense of community he used to get when he went to the gym. Or, as he calls it still - the club. The Club isn’t gone, however. Not by a long shot. That place you could go to achieve your fitness goals or simply be well among a group of other like-minded folks? It still exists, in Aliso Viejo at ClubSport - Orange County’s premier fitness resort-style gym where “you’re more than a member, you’re a member of our family.” And the experience here is even more amazing than ever.

And don’t forget the wide range of court sports including racquetball, squash, and basketball.

Relaxation more your speed for the day? Book a massage or facial treatment at the luxurious R Spa - which is also partnered with the Rejuvenation Room offering IV vitamin therapies and vitamin injections. A full-service restaurant, the vibrant Citrus Fresh Grill & Market serves up “naturally delicious” new world cuisine, snacks, and smoothies for dine-in or takeout crafted from real, wholesome ingredi-
If you have no idea where to begin when it comes to your fitness and nutrition goals, ClubSport Aliso Viejo has that covered, too! There is a wide range of options for personal training, an immersive 8-week weight loss program called Rev32, nutritious takehome meals, and accessible advice from on-site professionals that make it easy to stay accountable to yourself.
There is literally something for everyone. Whether it be relaxation or rejuvenation you’re looking for, or to get super sweaty alongside your Boot Camp compadres, the Club hasn’t actually gone anywhere. It’s simply gotten better. As for the Air-Pods? You can take ‘em or leave ‘em.

There are three main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Because each has many different appearances, it is important to know the early warning signs.
Look especially for change of any kind. Do not ignore a suspicious spot simply because it does not hurt. Skin cancers may be painless, but dangerous all the same. If you notice one or more of the warning signs, see a board-certified dermatologist right away, preferably one who specializes in diseases of the skin.

An actinic keratosis (AK) is a crusty, scaly growth caused by damage from exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. An AK is considered a precancer because if left alone, it could develop into a skin cancer. AKs are the product of a lifetime accumulation of UV damage and typically appear on areas most commonly exposed sun, such as the backs of the hands, forearms, face, neck, and scalp.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells arising in the epidermis, the skin’s outermost layer. SCCs often look like scaly red patches, crusty bumps, warts, or elevated growths with a central depression. SCCs may appear suddenly and some forms are tender to touch. They can become disfiguring and sometimes deadly if allowed to grow. More than 1 million cases of SCC are diagnosed each year in the U.S., which translates to about 115 cases diagnosed every hour. Incidence has increased by 200 percent in the past three decades in the U.S., and more than 15,000 Americans die each year from this type of skin cancer.

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most frequently occurring form of all cancers, with more than 4 million cases of diagnosed in the U.S. each year. BCCs may look like open sores, red patches, pink growths, shiny bumps, or scars. Any skin lesion that doesn’t heal, or bleeds with even gentle trauma, such as drying with a towel, is concerning for a BCC.

Melanoma is a very dangerous form of skin cancer. Melanoma is caused mainly by intense, occasional UV exposure (frequently leading to sunburn), especially in those who are genetically predisposed to the disease. An estimated 178,560 cases of melanoma are diagnosed in the U.S. each year and is fatal for an estimated 9,320 of these patients. Fortunately, if melanoma is recognized and treated early, it is almost always curable.
1. Everyone needs to perform a self-skin exam once a month.
2. Melanoma can appear anywhere on the skin, including the palms/soles, under your nails, and places...for most, have never seen the light of day (genitalia). For this reason, it is important to look everywhere. Lock the bathroom door, get out a hand mirror, and check, it could save your life.
3. What to look for: ABCDEs, and an ugly duckling
A - Asymmetry: If I draw a line down the middle, do the sides match?
B - Border: Is there a nice crisp border, or does the mole melt into the surrounding skin?
C - Color: Moles should be one color, one shade of brown. Is there a variety of shades or additional colors, such as black, red, white, or blue?
D - Diameter: Any mole larger than 6mm, ie the head of a pencil eraser, has a higher risk of becoming melanoma.
E - Evolution: Has it changed?
F - The Ugly Duckling Sign: Most people have a “signature mole,” their own personal mole appearance and architecture. Is there a mole that seems different from all the others?
4. Everyone needs a full body skin exam by a board-certified dermatologist once a year, more frequently if you have a family history of skin cancer, a personal history of skin cancer, or live in an area with substantial sunshine.

There’s a phenomenon that happens in the atmosphere when it rains. A term for it - petrichor - was coined in 1964 by Australian scientists.
It attempts to describe the earthy smell associated with thunderstorms. The result of compounds like activated oxygen and plant oils in the soil contribute to what smells like the cleanest, most fresh air possible. Puréfi Air Systems is a local Orange County distributor for the 97-year-old parent company Aerus - and the company that manufactures products that can replicate that incredible phenomenon…indoors.
There aren’t many companies out there that I fully get behind as a mom. Especially in this day in age, when so many social media influencers prioritize followers over function - image over quality standards. Puréfi stands apart. Not only are they dedicated to educating and helping Orange County residents breathe easier in their homes, offices and schools, they strive to give back where their employees live and work.
The past couple of years have been challenging for us all, not just those of us who have children at home, and the anxiety over airborne pollution and contaminants - not just COVID-19seems to have peaked. In our extended family as an example - my mother is asthmatic and several family members face a similar set of allergens and respiratory conditions, so clean air is certainly a priority. Puréfi tackles that on behalf of families like ours, with the only air cleaning technology awarded the prestigious Space of Technology Seal of Approval. (You read that right.)
ActivePure’s portable filtration, purification and sanitization system technology works by destabilizing the outer shell of a virus, pollutant, or bacteria which turns them into harmless by-products. Aerus worked with NASA to design and patent the technology, which makes this “air and surface defender” the only one that ac-

tively seeks out contaminants in your home or office. Other technologies can be passive or slow, as they wait for the pollutants to be pulled into their filters. ActivePure doesn’t wait. It neutralizes and continues to protect beyond the initial cleaning 24/7.
Keeping particulates at bay is more important than ever and this is the only technology proven to inactivate 99.99% of SARS COV-2,” says Kaeli Wilson, owner and CEO of Puréfi, whose own family have been utilizing similar technology since 1995.
“My parents were struggling to overcome an air quality issue at their hatchery in Hemet when they met a farmer from Minnesota who was here in California on vacation who suggested a solution, something he called ‘a thunderstorm in a box.’ Dad bought the air cleaning system and in a matter of days, the air quality problem was gone. We’ve been serving Southern California residents ever since.”
So what is it about ions, wave patterns, wind, solar, and oxygen? Well, they go together, first and foremost. More importantly, they’re natural elements designed to keep the environment healthy for its own sake - and
thankfully, we benefit from cleaner air. ActivePure works by recreating photocatalysis, the very same process found in nature.
Ridding the air of mold, mildew, viruses, pollen, tobacco smoke, dust, pet dander and chemical particulates in our homes, office, schools, and hospitals is especially critical now that we’re spending close to 90% of our time indoors.
I found it particularly surprising to discover that indoor levels of pollution may be 2 - 5 times higher - and occasionally more than 100 times higher - than outdoor pollutant levels and that "energy-efficient homes trap pollutants" according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
As ActivePure's systems are portable, with no installation required, you can get one set up in no time, and they’re actually whisper-silent, unlike so many of the so-called kid-friendly devices out there that clutter the home with noise pollution and produce ozone while they’re at it.
While also featuring complementary HEPA, Ionization and Activated Carbon technologies, there’s just no downside. Especially for those with asthma, allergies, COPD and now COVID transitioning to endemic, general health has never been easier to access.
The scientists were onto something when they started talking about an atmospheric perfume in the 60’s. Smells like an obvious choice to me.

There is a specific type of business person I particularly appreciate when utilizing his or her services. One who is detail oriented.
Ryan “Bubbles” Jara is just such a professional. Having been in mobile auto detail business serving Orange County for over 25 years, he must be, and especially since his specialty is restoration and paint correction on classic cars. Bubbles was the plan since the beginning, it seems.
“My uncles restore classic vehicles so I grew up in the industry," he says. "It only made sense to one day have a business of my own bringing cars back to their original glory.”
But what happens before a car becomes a classic? Those of us that pride ourselves on being detail oriented would perhaps note that a regular car wash and wax are in order. Ryan takes it one step further.
you, and handles all of the heavy lifting - from upholstery cleaning to paint protection.
Jara's services include hand wash and wax, interior and exterior detailing, headlight restoration, steam cleaning, ceramic coating, engine bay wash and ... something my minivan could certainly use ... pet hair removal. You name the vehicle, Bubbles will ensure it is looking its finest.
“Having a passion for the cars I’m servicing takes almost no effort - I know I love this work," he says. "The commitment to excellence and knowledge of the chemical industry gives your car its million-dollar shine.”

RV’s, motorcycles, daily drivers, trucks, boats and classic cars. The convenience is unmatched and the product? Well, it’s detailed. And you know I love nothing better.

There is architecture, and then there is design. One accounts for the specifics of buildingspecs, features. The other drags your feelings into the picture. Any good resort combines the best of both, introducing its guests to a luxury of mind and spirit: an escape for the entire being. One of the very few hotels I’ve ever found to boast such a wedding of the two also called for the union of past and present, history and modernization.
The only Four Diamond Hotel in the Village of La Jolla, The Grande Colonial Hotel has been welcoming guests to a gorgeous coastal respite for over a century. One of San Diego’s oldest original seaside hotels, the property has been completely modernized, yet remains faithful to the timeless elegance of its storied past - the sophisticated decor infused with a classic European ambiance and aesthetic. This intimate, iconic property is ideally situated amidst the pristine beaches and regal bluffs of one of Southern California’s most picturesque coastal towns.
Choose from luxurious ocean, garden, or village view rooms, sumptuous suites, vacation rental studios and indulge in an escape to the past, with all the modern amenities you might ever need right at your fingertips. Each accommodation captures the quintessential California coastal lifestyle. Our family’s Ocean Grande Double Queen room was super spacious and defined by loads of natural light and spectacular views of the Pacific, which is literally steps away. On the weekend, it’s a short stroll from the hotel to the water’s edge and the enormous grassy area (Ellen Brown-

ing Scripps Park) adjacent to the La Jolla Cove where you can peruse the handcrafted wares (jewelry, photography, paintings, textiles and woodwork) of local artisans.
My daughter and I strolled down to the La Jolla Cove each morning to watch the sealions and their pups frolic in the waves and in the evenings, our entire family trekked on foot all through the village, window shopping the scores of art galleries and boutique shops.
The emphasis on local artisanry carries through to the casually elegant
farm-to-table dining experience at The Grande Colonial’s NINE-TEN Restaurant & Bar. Award-winning Chef Jason Knibb creates a unique seasonal menu dictated by the local harvest. Our family enjoyed brunch, people watching on the sidewalk patio while noshing on fresh from the oven house-made sourdough bread slathered with salted butter. Both kids indulged in fluffy blueberry lemon buttermilk pancakes that were every bit as delicious as they sound. The cuisine was excellent, the service attentive, yet unobtrusive ... the perfect way to while away a late morning.
Stay in and relax, or take a drive through La Jolla Cove to the Shores. Whatever you do, lean into the artistry of a well-designed vacation, with gracious personalized service every step of the way.

When I was younger, my Mom loved to read me the book “If You Give A Mouse A Cookie.” The plot essentially revolves around an ever-growing list of to-do’s that had to be accomplished, all set into motion by the simple act of giving a mouse a cookie. This tale came back to me recently when I purchased a new television at Best Buy.
What was a simple shopping trip ended up being an adult’s version of that circular tale. If you give a grownup a television, they’ll have to measure their wall. When they measure the wall, they’ll realize they may actually
have room for a bigger television. When they buy the bigger television, they’ll find out they have no idea how to mount it to the wall. When they start mounting it to the wall, they’ll see that the power outlets are all in the wrong places. When they realize
the outlets need to be moved, they’ll call an electrician. (This could go on forever.)
Luckily for clients who have been on the receiving end of ReelTime’s patient, intelligent, and personalized
service, the rabbit hole of home automation doesn’t have to swallow you entirely. With the help of their independent certified Control4 dealer, it’s easy to update your home without upending your entire life. After all, the true luxury of an integrated entertainment system is really dependent on its ability to deliver seamless entertainment. By placing every control at your fingertips, the team at ReelTime helps homeowners manage everything from how brightly lit your family room is, to your streaming devices - all with a single remote. And best yet? You can control your whole home from the comfort of your couch- even seeing who is at the front door, without ever leaving your seat. Simple, clean, and uncluttered.
And on the home entertainment front … when you started planning for your ultimate home theater set-up and sound system, could you find the right media cabinetry for your particular space – cabinetry that wouldn’t catch on fire from the heat of the equipment, or that would simply look good in the room? Did you understand half of what the televisions, receivers and other devices could

do, and did you have anyone to hold your hand to make sure you weren’t overspending for what you wanted?
Big box retailers, the professed champions of value, are happy to sell you any home theater and sound equipment you think you might like,
and send you off to figure it out at home. That’s what they do. And that’s all they do.
If you want the home theater system that you envision, seek the services of Skip Myers and his team of experienced professionals at ReelTime to take you from start to finish for the home theater or sound system of your dreams.

“Usually there is a part of the job that you find you just can’t do by yourself,” says Skip, who has overseen the design and installation of thousands of home theater and sound systems over the course of 40-plus years in the business. “You get your brand new television home, you’re so excited, then you realize you need to move an outlet or none of the cabinets you can find will fit your space. We’re here to make sure you get the equipment that will give you what you want and the system that will work with that equipment, without leaving you to fend for yourself.”

We’re here to make sure you get the equipment that will give you what you want and the system that will work with that equipment, without leaving you to fend for yourself.
Skip opened the doors at ReelTime in 1983. Today, the technicians and designers that Skip assigns to clients are all ReelTime employees, knowledgeable in all home theater and sound technologies. First, they work closely with you to determine what you’re looking for. Then they custom design every aspect of the project, from wiring to custom-built cabinets, frames, or built-in wall designs. Finally, licensed, in-house contractors install your entertainment system with care and precision.
There are a couple of things that people may not think about when they embark upon the road to their own home entertainment system.
“You need to think about your home theater goals,” says Skip. “You don’t have to do everything at once – you can do it bit by bit – but if you know where you’re going, you’ll save money and when it’s all said and done, you’ll have exactly what you want and what you will actually use. We’re here to help you determine your goals.”
Skip is also an advocate for getting what you’ll use, which is part of the design and planning process.
“You can buy everything you want to, but if you can’t operate it, what’s the point?” he says. “There’s the television, DVD and Blue-ray; there’s the receiver, there’s Apple TV… it’s all great, but how do you get them to work together? We’re big advocates of the universal remote. Not everyone knows how to get the most out of their systems with one powerful remote – they’re not expensive, but the best ones are computer-based. We’ll set that up for you so you’re getting the most out of your custom system.”
It’s easy to assume that personal service is expensive, but a conversation with Skip and the experts at ReelTime is free. Ultimately, in planning your purchases for the right outcome, you’re likely to save money while avoiding chilling setbacks. The only chilling you want to be doing is in front of your fantasy home theater system.

It’s a new year. I, along with everyone I know, made resolutions: mostly hoping that this year would be better than the last, but some that genuinely reflected an optimistic mindset. Said mindset led my husband and I to craft one that hadn't topped our previous lists: fix broken things.
Like most everyone we know, our family has spent considerably more time at home these past months - and knocking around the house all day, we've made a priority

of a dizzying array of home improvement projects - both indoors and out - that we'd previously deferred. Turns out, we're not alone.
A common refrain among our friend group? Countless home appliances to be replaced. Garden and landscaping projects to embark on. And a rather surprising number of sliding glass doors in need of repair in our collective Southern California homes.
If hauling open your sliding door requires Herculean strength, it’s likely you’re experiencing rollers with dirt and dust buildup so they don’t roll the way they used to. Over the years, it’s common for the rollers to wear to the point that you may actually be dragging the entire weight of the sliding door across the track, which causes even more damage and drag every time you do it.
Whether your door is modern or ancient, made of aluminum, vinyl or wood … all you have to do to “remedy your rolling troubles” is schedule a free inspection. A tech will come out to see if the components can be fixed or replaced, and then...fix it. With over 25 years of industry experience, Dr. Slide-Door is the number one chosen sliding glass door repair service in Southern California. What sets them apart? Each member of Dr. Slide Door’s team arrives with everything you’ll need on site.
“Your sliding door professional will replace the parts right down to the rollers, leaving your door feeling weightless and good as new. You’ll be amazed at how easily your door slides open and closed.”

Enter Shy Hadan. Known as Dr. SlideDoor, Shy's father was in the business of selling sliding doors, but when he saw that there was no one to fix them,
With parts made in Germany, you can be assured that your “new” door could last another 20 years: plenty of time to tackle out the rest of your resolutions.

My grandparents owned a beautiful three bedroom casita in Solana Beach. Just up the road from the train station, their home was built in the twenties, and renovated completely when I was in high school. When my grandfather passed away, I moved in with my grandma, doing chores around the house for her and helping to maintain the garden. One day, I was looking for my grandfather’s whetstone, to sharpen an old pair of shears, and I stumbled across his Colt Python 357 Magnum. I had to look it up - I thought it might be a relic from one of the movies he worked on in the 50’s, but according to my grandma, it was just “one of those things your grandpa just insisted on having.”
Jeff McCabe has gotten more of his fair share of calls from people like myself, who accidentally come across family firearms in their home and don’t have the first idea of what to do with them. The owner of California Gun Services, Jeff is in the business of safe gun storage, ownership and disposal. The first step? Following California gun laws. I had zero clue that by driving the Colt to the Army Navy to try and turn it in I’d be breaking a couple laws. According to Jeff there are laws restricting gifting or selling a gun, receiving a gun, borrowing a gun, transporting a gun, even storing guns. New laws come out every year, and it is almost impossible for anyone, even aficionados to keep up with them. Jeff and his team work closely with local law enforcement to ensure the process is easy and safe.
My grandma hadn’t touched the revolver in years, though my grandfather had made sure she shot it at some canned tomatoes on a desert trip when they were younger. “I’m afraid the grandkids might find it,” she told me that day. “I’d feel safer without it.” A sentiment shared by Jeff’s friends, family and fellow church parishioners - many of whom have sought his assistance over the years to ensure the proper storage or disposal of firearms they found themselves in possession of upon the passing of a loved one.
What initially started as a favor for a friend has grown into a bonafide side business as word has spread about Jeff’s particular skill set and confidence in handling firearms. As the owner of the Orange-based One Way Painting, Jeff often encountered situations whereby he would come across a firearm when moving furniture around for a client prior to starting a painting project. “Many times, the firearm belonged to my client’s father, grandfather or late husband and she never touched it because she was afraid of guns, but didn’t know how to get rid of it safely. So many times these guns are loaded and just stuck in a nightstand or stored under the bed.”
Raised in a family that had firearms for hunting and sporting, Jeff was taught early on how to handle, be respectful and always be safe when handling firearms. I believe that we as Americans have a great privilege to be able to own a firearm, but with that comes an even greater responsi-

bility to not only protect ourselves legally by complying with Federal and State laws, but to protect ourselves, our neighbors and most importantly, our children from all possible dangers associated with firearms.”
San Clemente resident Rhonda Murphy couldn’t agree more. “There are many things to deal with when a loved one dies. In 2010, when cleaning out my husband’s closet, I came across several of his guns. I didn’t want to keep them and was unsure of what to do with them. My daughters didn’t want the guns and I didn’t want to deal with the hassle of storing them as my grandkids are often at my house. A friend suggested I should call Jeff. He was very nice, easy to talk with, trustworthy and knowledgable. He came to my house, checked all the guns to make sure they were unloaded and removed them. Jeff also told me that one of the guns was a collector’s item and was able to sell it for me. One less thing to have to worry about. I can’t recommend Jeff enough.”
As part of their auditing procedures, California Gun Services gives clients the option of a Voluntary Registration Form (in the case where the weapon was inherited). Many of Jeff’s clients are like my grandma who just prefers that the gun is destroyed. Jeff holds a Federal Firearm License and as such, is able to take possession of firearms without a Gun Transfer. He can also inspect firearms to ensure they are still in working order, and even tell you if the gun, or guns, you have are California Compliant.
“Most people are unaware that firearms that were purchased legally from a gun shop just a year ago may now be illegal in California,” says Jeff. “If we find a firearm that is out of compliance with the law, you’ll receive solid advice on how to make it compliant, sell it out of state, or potentially dispose of it. Our process is approved and certified by local law enforcement, it’s legal, safe and adheres to all state and federal firearms laws.
“Since firearms last more than a lifetime, families often have small and large collections of guns in their home. Knowing what you have and what to do with those firearms is important. Whether it’s from a death in the family, inheritance, or just a need for clearing out some that you know you will never use, we can help. Following California gun laws is essential. We come to you. It’s a safe, easy and professional process.”

California Gun Services’ processes are approved and certified by local law enforcement and adheres to all state and federal firearms laws for the following services:
Jeff will come to you and inspect your firearms to make sure they are in proper working order and that they are California Compliant. If your firearm is not compliant with the California Law, you will receive solid advice on how to make it compliant or possibly dispose or sell it out of state.
If a firearm is found to be unsafe to use, cannot be repaired and has no historical value. California Gun Services will permanently destroy it by torching the receiver or frame into three parts or cutting it with a saw into five parts. Jeff will document this with photos and log it for the Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and email you the proof of destruction.

Private Party Transfers happen between two individuals and will need to take place at a Federal Firearm Licensed Dealer. Since this needs to be done at a Gun Shop, Jeff cannot offer this as an in-home service. If you have inherited or legally obtain a firearm, he can provide you with a Voluntary Registration form or you can download it from the California Department of Justice which is NOT required to do at a gun shop. California Gun Services has a Federal Firearm License and can legally come to you and take possession of a firearm without a Gun Transfer.
California Gun Services will come to you and appraise a single gun or an entire collection of any size. You will receive an explanation of how guns are legally sold and transferred. California Gun Services can then make you a fair market value offer and/or explain how a gun can be put up for sale on consignment.
To connect with Jeff directly, call (714) 639-9608 or for more information, visit CaliforniaGunServices.com.

California Gun Services will make sure you are using the right ammunition for the firearms that you have and that it is legal in the State of California. Jeff will inspect the ammunition to make sure that it has been stored correctly, is in good condition and will ensure that the ammunition is being stored properly, using the right type of container and stored in the right location in your home.

“I never thought I’d be turning 65…..” If I had a dollar for every time that sentence has been uttered in my office I’d be looking at a really tall stack of one dollar bills.

Nowadays you apply for Medicare on the Social Security website (or there’s a number to call into to make a phone appointment). This is only if you’re not taking Social Security early, you’ll get your Medicare card automatically if you are already taking Social Security. Once you apply for Medicare you will receive a letter in a few weeks from Social Security saying they’ve received your application and it was approved. Then a second letter arrives and it gives you your Medicare number and that letter then tells you that you’ll be receiving your Medicare card in several weeks. This is a big milestone financially for most because of the cost of their health insurance if they are paying for it privately (group insurance can be expensive too however). Most can hardly wait to start saving money (At age 64 rates are typically over $1000 a month for coverage that has a lot of co-pays and a deductible in the few thousands). Once you get your
“Original Medicare” card (paper, red, white and blue with a random alpha-numeric combination and a Part A and Part B effective date on it) you have choices to make. The majority of people who I meet with want me to enroll them in a Medicare Advantage plan after learning about all of the great benefits and learning that it has no premium at all. That’s right, zero premium. All you have to do is pay your Part B premium to the government. Better yet, almost all of your medical care has zero co-pays. Even if you’re hospitalized you won’t pay anything. You have financial peace of mind knowing you’ll never need to be worried about high medical bills again. It’s the only positive side of turning 65 I’m told.
I’m also told by my clients that are new to Medicare that they feel so fortunate to have me “hold their hand” and help them through the process. I will “hold your hand” too if you want my assistance as you face this big milestone. Much of my consultation time is going through the appropriate steps of someone just getting their Medicare active. This really has nothing to do with my job because I’m an insurance broker, not a government employee. But this seems to be the most daunting step for most that I meet with.
The government is trying to make it an easier process. If you have a computer you can enroll in Medicare online by going to Medicare. gov. They are continually trying to make that website more user friendly. Once you’re on the website just click on “Apply for Medicare” on the lower left hand side of the webpage. And it takes you right to the Social Security website page and in a bright blue box at the bottom of the page it reads, “Apply for Medicare Only”. Then just follow the steps and you’ll be done in no time!
You’ll want to start this process 3 months before your birthday month to make sure you’re good to go on the first day of the month that you turn 65 (unless you’re born on the 1st, then you get to go on Medicare one month early). Medicare alone is not enough, and that’s where I come in to help you understand your Medicare options. Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplements and Medicare Drug plans are complex and the fact that you can have my knowledge (at no cost to you) to help you decide the right choice for you at this milestone in your life should give you peace of mind as well.

A very important large clinical study was presented at the European Association of Urology 2021 Annual Meeting (EAU 2021). The findings from the largest United States analysis for treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) reveal that overall complication rates are lowest after treatment with the Urolift® System when compared to surgery and other minimally invasive procedures.
The study clearly demonstrates that complication rates following surgery for BPH are higher than treatment with the minimally invasive Urolift® System. Dr. Daniel Rukstalis explains the importance of this study as research in the area of surgical or minimally invasive procedures for BPH is sparse. “We found the UroLift System had the lowest overall rate of complications at 300days post-treatment,” says Dr. Rukstalis1
As an early user of the Urolift® System and a certified Urolift® Center of Excellence2, and certified instructor for the Urolift technique, I am very excited to see clinical data that confirms the excellent outcomes my BPH patients experience in my private urology practice. Treating men with BPH, also known as enlarged prostate, is a major focus for minimally invasive treatments at Pacific Coast Urology Medical Center.
Many of my patients are surprised to learn that over 40 million men in the United States are affected by BPH. This condition occurs when the prostate gland that surrounds the male urethra becomes enlarged with advancing age and begins to obstruct the urinary system. While BPH is not life-threatening, the symptoms include interrupted sleep, daytime frequent urination, leakage of urine and an urgent need to urinate. Sometimes, it’s not possible to get to the bathroom in time! Urinary problems can cause loss of productivity, depression and decreased quality of life.
While medication has been the firstline therapy for enlarged prostate

in the past, the treatment is often inadequate. Many patients do not experience adequate relief of symptoms. There are a number of side effects including, sexual dysfunction, dizziness, episodes of falling down and headaches. AND, NOW THERE IS MEDICAL DATA THAT SHOWS MEDICATION HAS BEEN LINKED TO DEMENTIA AND DEPRESSION.
•
•
•
•
•
When medication does not improve the quality of life for patients, the next treatment alternative often recommended by urologists is surgery. Unfortunately, surgery requires cutting, heating and/or removal of the prostate tissue to open the blocked urethra and can have numerous complications.
This large study documents that while surgical options can be effective in relieving symptoms, they can also leave patients with permanent side effects such as urinary incontinence, erectile dysfunction, and retrograde ejaculation.
With the FDA approved in-office Prostatic Urethral Lift Procedure we now have a truly minimally invasive

procedure that affords patients the relief of symptoms without the effects and complications of surgery or medications. If you’re taking a medication, you should know that Urolift is 3 times as effective as any medication for prostate growth symptoms.

The FDA-cleared Prostatic Urethral Lift procedure using the UroLift® System is a clinically proven, minimally invasive technology for treating lower urinary tract symptoms due to BPH. If you would like to treat your BPH and learn more about the UroLift® System - done in an outpatient setting without cutting, heating, or removing prostate tissue, call to schedule your consultation.

Ralph Waldo Emerson famously said “who you are speaks so loudly I cannot hear what you’re saying.” Keeping this quote in mind has served me well over the years, particularly in choosing friends … and when seeking out the services of professionals. In my opinion, integrity isn’t a word heard often enough in the business world. Competitive, certainly.
But unfortunately phrases like “bottom-line oriented,” “unscrupulous,” even “cutthroat” have cropped up in the vernacular when hearing home improvement gone wrong stories from fellow homeowners. That’s why it was so refreshing to come across Jeff McCabe and his Orange County-based One Way Painting.
In business since 1976, Jeff and his team serve all of the OC and specialize in interior and exterior residential and commercial painting. They swear by the rules of professionalism: “no cutting corners. No cheap materials. We pay attention to every detail, and never call a job complete until the customer is completely satisfied.”
Some might call it good Christian values. Others might say it’s simply good
business. But for the last 42 years, working from the heart has earned One Way Painting such a respected reputation in the industry that the vast majority of their work comes through repeat customers or referrals from repeat customers. The company’s success isn’t merely rooted in customer service though. Boasting a superior knowledge of available product on the market and hiring the most profes sional crews in the business also goes a long way.
“Our reputation speaks for itself; but if it didn’t, we have 16 satisfied employees on our permanent payroll who would put a hand up in

defense of the standards we set,” says Jeff. Standards which were born and bred through a commitment to ethical business practices and hard work. In 2001, Jeff teamed up with seasoned professional Ron Bartz as a journeyman, then took over the company when Ron retired, and has been growing it ever since.

In 2009, Jeff took the pair of threeman crews and expanded the operation to encompass six crews, two office staff, and a project manager who oversees jobs, right alongside the man with the plan himself. “We currently have four trucks on the road and I’d like a full fleet someday. I’d like to leave a legacy for my daughters, and that means more than just cans of paint and a warehouse full of equipment and materials.”
To Jeff, it means taking care of his employees, taking care of his family: taking care of business. The hope is that One Way Painting becomes a household name, for its quality of work and quality of values.

My husband and I can happily attest to both. When we moved into our home in San Juan Capistrano five years ago, we acquired quotes for exterior painting from several contractors, but were particularly impressed with Jeff and his crew. Prior to starting work at our home, Jeff came by in person to go over what the job would entail and answered all of our questions. His team showed up right on time the first day - and each subsequent day - and at the end of each day everything was cleaned up before they left.

process and followed up immediately upon completion of the job to ensure that we were satisfied with the results and our overall experience of working with One Way Painting).
Their attention to detail is found from start to finish. For exterior projects, they begin by power washing to clean and remove any loose paint, mildew or mold. Then the patching: with stucco, trenching around the foundations and priming with an acrylic. They’ll treat your wood siding, eaves, fascia,

“We pride ourselves on working with a team of long-term employees - we do not hire off the street,” says Jeff. “We guarantee our work and do not require payment till the job is completed and the customer is completely pleased with our work.”
Jeff and his crew delivered on these promises and more than exceeded our expectations - the result was outstanding work, a job completed on time and on budget and defined by unparalleled customer service (Kelly in his office was hyper-responsive to our inquiries during the estimating

Every job is done ‘as unto the Lord.’ Does this mean we’re perfect? No. It does mean that we strive to do the best painting job possible.”

You might be surprised to learn what the country’s fastest growing industry is and it’s not RV sales, in spite of a year of lockdown. But the demand to get on the road is certainly fueling the drive toward recreational activities in North America, and e-bikes are running away with the market.
Fueled by demand from both Canada and the U.S., e-bikes are looking at an annual growth rate of close to 11% over the next few years, marching right along with a booming housing market and burgeoning infrastructure development. Targeting not only recent retirees, but enthusiasts of all ages looking to stay

active, get outside or simply prefer to tool around town on an E-bike - the evolved and infinitely more exciting electric iteration of the traditional two-wheeler.
While E-bike purveyors are seemingly on every corner, few have experienced the explosion in interest and growth locally like Doheny Bike - the fastest growing E-bike company in Dana Point.
This is perhaps due in large measure to the popularity, versatility,

utility and affordability of the company’s Fold N’ Go collection - available in a array of colors and profiles. But undoubtedly in equal measure is the mission of its co-owners - Jason Spates and Micah Meiring - to “give back to the community.”
Doheny itself boasts a robust outdoor history. Killer Dana, the aptly named freight-train-thick swell brought in surfers and developers alike. Hoping to keep the community close to the land and sea that brought it prosperity originally seemed logical for Jason, Micah and their team, working with the City of Dana Point recently to hand out 75 complimentary helmets, scooters, and skateboards. “Dana Point is an amazing community, and we want to help more kids enjoy it safely.
Doheny Bike is donating a Doheny EZ Folding bike to Pet Project’s biggest fundraiser of the year on September 19th called Pet Project Foundation: Roaring for Rescues! Proceeds will benefit the animals at the San Clemente-Dana Point Animal Shelter.
“We recognized the opportunity to give back, to contribute to our community that shaped our childhood, and it felt natural to encourage mobility and personal freedom when the pandemic had taken so much of it away.” Jason and Micah are a couple of local Dana Point dads, lucky enough to have lived near the worldfamous Doheny Beach surf spot their entire lives. “Our freedom was nearly unlimited as kids in the 1970’s and 80’s - we wanted our own kids to be as mobile as we were.”
The idea of access and freedom have long been associated with the bicycle, and Doheny Bike believes in

“It should be fun, but we’re also thinking beyond fun to community, individual expression and the ability to remain mobile.”
sending its patrons out on adventures to places unknown, where they might not have ventured before. They set out to provide an affordable solution for everyday mobility.
“With the average buyer’s budget in mind, we wanted a functional riding experience that is not trendy, awkward and limited to your hometown,” says Micah. “Creating the agility of the Fold N’ Go anywhere design, we have provided a solution to buyers that want to travel in a smaller car with electric bikes and ultimately extend their outdoor adventures.”
As parents, Jason and Micah stress the importance of safety, and encourage all riders to be over 16, along with the importance of sizing the bike

out, wearing a helmet, and meeting minimum requirements to ride the bikes safely on the road.
“It should be fun, but we’re also thinking beyond fun, to community, individual expression, and the ability to remain mobile.” On a single charge, you can ride up to 50 miles. Put a basket on the back and you’re ready for the store or farmer’s market. “I wanted something better than traffic in my car and I just knew that the options I had to help my community needed to be affordable and reliable.”
With a background in commercial truck leasing and loans, and an early pandemic ride on his nephew’s electric scooter, genius was born. “There’s something about being out in the fresh air that made a great start to the day.” The recent cycling boom couldn’t agree more.

For nearly 40 years, southern California homeowners have used Epoxy for garage and industrial floor coating projects despite its tendency to yellow, it’s soft and easy to scratch surface and it’s tendency to be permanently damaged by the hot, high performance tires found on most cars in the OC area.
Today OC homeowners don’t have to settle for Epoxy and all of its flaws anymore. SpartaFlex is an advanced, next generation 100% solids polyaspartic floor coating that gives your garage a beautiful finish that is 3x harder than epoxy, resists yellowing while also resisting permanent damage from hot tires. Perhaps best of all, SpartaFlex comes with a much better warranty than Epoxy.
Perkins Custom Coatings has been installing SpartaFlex on OC garage floors for nearly 14 years and has completed over 9,000 floors during that period of time. Its CEO and owner, Paul Frankel is considered by many to be the most knowledgeable contractor in the local market. “Unlike many of our competitors, we strive to do an onsite assessment including a moisture test for every floor coating project we install and instead of using the ‘one size fits all’ approach, we develop a coating solution that we believe will last for decades not just for a few years.”
Perkins uses only the most advanced surface preparation methods available and will either diamond grind or shot blast every floor that he installs. Old, failing, yellowed ep-
oxy coatings can also be removed during this same process. “Despite the fact that Coatings Industry requires concrete to at least be diamond ground before installing a new coating system, many of my competitors will install their coatings right over raw or pressure washed concrete just to save a few bucks - I will never do that” says Paul.
Perkins also is known for its professional and unique approach to repairing concrete cracks. “Anyone can slap some crack repair paste to cosmetically fix a crack” says Paul. A year later, when the concrete moves again and damages their brand new floor coating, the devastated homeowner will learn that this damage is not covered by the typical Epoxy warranty. “We are the only company that I know of that uses a ‘structural crack repair’ technique to fix cracks. The process is so effective we can offer our customers a warranty that can cover future damage from cracks!” says Paul.
After the surface prep is completed, a very effective moisture control primer is applied to the concrete. “This is extremely important” says Paul because for many homes built in Socal before 2005, elevated moisture vapor levels in the garage concrete can have a detrimental impact on floor coatings. Paul does a fast and non-destructive moisture test for every one of the pre-2005 homes he visits and develops a unique installation plan for each home. For newer homes, Paul and his crew can use a basic primer that dries a bit faster allowing installation of a garage floor in as little as one day!
The color chips that give the Perkins floor its legendary appearance are sandwiched between this primer and finish coat. Perkins carries the widest selection of colors and sizes in the market and uses a ‘full chip broadcast’, not a partial sprinkling of chips like many of its competitors. “The full chip broadcast gives the floor a consistent appearance and makes the floor much more durable and helps hide dirt better than the partial broadcast finish” says Paul.
Finally, Perkins installs the SpartaFlex polyaspartic finish coat and the finished garage comes to life. “Epoxy & SpartaFlex floor coatings are virtually identical in appearance when they are first installed” says Paul. “However, when you will really begin to appreciate a SpartaFlex floor is a few months down the road when you would typically start to see problems develop with an Epoxy floor. If there was a better material on the market, I would be selling it, but there isn’t and that is why we love selling SpartaFlex.”
