Dear Reader:

2020 will forever be a year for the history books. Whichever way you slice it, the 10 months we’ve spent so far have been, for most Americans, some of the strangest of our entire lives. Some have been at home for more continuous weeks than ever before. Some haven’t seen loved ones since spring. Social unrest, a global pandemic, and a Presidential election have dominated the headlines. I’ve even spent a considerable amount of time wondering what hobbies my neighbors have learned in the past few months. If you were to look on any social media platform, it looks a lot like sourdough starters, backyard crafting, TikTok challenges, and random woodworking projects. In reality, what I’m realizing is that we’ve all learned that we contain an allotment of durability that we weren’t aware of before.

If you’re one of the people who has taken up woodworking in your spare time, you might find that like others who have come before you, there are specific types of wood that work better than others: walnut, for example: extremely strong, stable, and shock resistant. Or ash, a carpenters favorite, for its toughness and flexibility. Traits that we’ve also come to see present in so many of our friends and neighbors, and especially my fellow small business owners. We’ve had to modify our entire lives over the better part of the last year, but the challenges have only served to highlight the way many of us already approach our respective industries. With resolve, courage, and the ability to pivot at a moment’s notice to adapt to a changing market or our customer’s demand.

The very definition of flexibility resounds in my ears even as I consider the impact that COVID-19 has had on my community and those around me: ‘the ability to be easily modified to respond to altered circumstances or conditions’. We can’t open the doors? We’ll shop outside. We can’t serve inside? Al fresco it is. Online shop? Done. Curbside pickup? Check. Our resilience is what first made us small business owners. We peered into the market and saw that we were needed: our products, our services, our personalities and strengths. And our resilience is what will sustain us through this, and the next chapter to follow. Perhaps we’ll have some new hobbies to boast about as well.

I hope you enjoy this edition and as always, please don’t hesitate to contact me directly with any questions, comments or ways in which we may be of service.

How

There are three main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Because each has many different appearances, it is important to know the early warning signs.

Look especially for change of any kind. Do not ignore a suspicious spot simply because it does not hurt. Skin cancers may be painless, but dangerous all the same. If you notice one or more of the warning signs, see a board-certified dermatologist right away, preferably one who specializes in diseases of the skin.

ACTINIC KERATOSIS

An actinic keratosis (AK) is a crusty, scaly growth caused by damage from exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. An AK is considered a precancer because if left alone, it could develop into a skin cancer. AKs are the product of a lifetime accumulation of UV damage and typically appear on areas most commonly exposed sun, such as the backs of the hands, forearms, face, neck, and scalp.

SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells arising in the epidermis, the skin’s outermost layer. SCCs often look like scaly red patches, crusty bumps, warts, or elevated growths with a central depression. SCCs may appear suddenly and some forms are tender to touch. They can become disfiguring and sometimes deadly if allowed to grow. More than 1 million cases of SCC are diagnosed each year in the U.S., which translates to about 115 cases diagnosed every hour. Incidence has increased by 200 percent in the past three decades in the U.S., and more than 15,000 Americans die each year from this type of skin cancer.

BASAL CELL CARCINOMA

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most frequently occurring form of all cancers, with more than 4 million cases of diagnosed in the U.S. each year. BCCs may look like open sores, red patches, pink growths, shiny bumps, or scars. Any skin lesion that doesn’t heal, or bleeds with even gentle trauma, such as drying with a towel, is concerning for a BCC.

MELANOMA

Melanoma is a very dangerous form of skin cancer. Melanoma is caused mainly by intense, occasional UV exposure (frequently leading to sunburn), especially in those who are genetically predisposed to the disease. An estimated 178,560 cases of melanoma are diagnosed in the U.S. each year and is fatal for an estimated 9,320 of these patients. Fortunately, if melanoma is recognized and treated early, it is almost always curable.

WHAT PATIENTS NEED TO KNOW

1. Everyone needs to perform a self-skin exam once a month.

2. Melanoma can appear anywhere on the skin, including the palms/soles, under your nails, and places...for most, have never seen the light of day (genitalia). For this reason, it is important to look everywhere. Lock the bathroom door, get out a hand mirror, and check, it could save your life.

3. What to look for: ABCDEs, and an ugly duckling

A - Asymmetry: If I draw a line down the middle, do the sides match?

B - Border: Is there a nice crisp border, or does the mole melt into the surrounding skin?

C - Color: Moles should be one color, one shade of brown. Is there a variety of shades or additional colors, such as black, red, white, or blue?

D - Diameter: Any mole larger than 6mm, ie the head of a pencil eraser, has a higher risk of becoming melanoma.

E - Evolution: Has it changed?

F - The Ugly Duckling Sign: Most people have a “signature mole,” their own personal mole appearance and architecture. Is there a mole that seems different from all the others?

4. Everyone needs a full body skin exam by a board-certified dermatologist once a year, more frequently if you have a family history of skin cancer, a personal history of skin cancer, or live in an area with substantial sunshine.

Reduce Peripheral Neuropathy and Chronic Pain without Drugs or Surgery!

Are you or a loved one suffering from chronic pain caused by peripheral neuropathy? Do you experience pain, numbness, burning, tingling, or tightness in your hands and feet? Would you like to try a natural treatment that is covered by insurance?

Call us to find out if you are cov ered. Most of our patients pay little to nothing and see a decrease in pain in only a few treatments.

We use a cutting-edge electrical cell signaling device called “Sanexas”

to increase blood flow and nutrient delivery to sites of pain. This helps give the nerve cells the nutrients they need to get you out of pain and remain healthy.

Depending on your coverage, YOUR TREATMENT COULD BE LITTLE TO NO COST TO YOU. The amount of treatment needed to allow the nerves to recover suffi-

ciently varies from person to person and can only be determined after a detailed physical exam.

THE VALUE OF A CPA FINANCIAL ADVISOR

Some things in life are better when combined with other things. Peanut butter is great, but better with jelly. S’mores are wonderful, but somehow tastier when eaten next to a campfire. Mobile phones are indispensable, but incrementally improve with every added app. This idea holds true with financial advice as well. CPAs and financial advisors are important and valuable resources in their own respects toward ensuring a sound financial future, but they’re even better when they’re both the same person.

The reason for this is simple; sound investment advice must be done with consideration of tax implications, as the cost of not doing so can be significant. Likewise, good tax planning often involves taking advantage of investment opportunities that become evident during the tax preparation process. A CPA Financial Advisor can help ensure that these interdependent objectives are executed on successfully.

According to a study involving 42,000 advisors by Envestnet, a leading investment platform provider, the “value added” of using a financial advisor is roughly 2% per year. The added value of a CPA/tax management is another 1% per year. The study breaks down the added value coming from 5 core areas:

The following highlights more tangibly describe how the value of a CPA financial advisor can enhance your financial plan.

Tax Savings = Enhanced Investment Returns

When considering the financial plan for one’s entire life, one should make tax savings as much of a priority as the selection of investment and retirement products. Tax savings simply can have too tremendous a positive impact on maximizing your retirement nest egg to ignore. And its importance and value generally increases proportionally with your marginal tax rate. This is especially true today, given the generally rich valuations and low yields of most traditional investment options.

Tax Management = Tax Savings

As the value of your taxable investments grow, so does the importance of utilizing tax management to minimize taxes. Whereas many financial advisors may list these offerings, you can count on the CPA financial advisor to ensure that tax management is being performed.

High Frequency of Interaction = Better Financial Maintenance

Another important ingredient to a sound financial plan is maintenance. Financial plans are snapshots in time that require periodic updates. Long-term impacts of near-term events such as career, family and preference changes need to be incorporated into the plan when they occur. So, frequency of interaction is paramount to good maintenance. And here again, the tax professional is, unfortunately like taxes, with you year in and year out. Hence, maintenance of a financial plan by a CPA financial advisor is a natural fit.

LAGUNA NIGUEL

Prescott Tax & Wealth Management

Peter Prescott formed Prescott Tax & Wealth Management (PTWM) over 20 years ago to focus on the needs of individual and small business owners who want and deserve a more comprehensive approach to their financial affairs that are typically provided by separate CPA, Financial Planning and Insurance advisors. Peter was one of the first CPAs nationally to offer a combined CPA and Financial Planning approach.

Peter astutely observes that most individuals go to separate financial advisors who are trying to maximize the business for their own specific service without regard to the impact of the other areas of required planning and the budgetary trade-offs needed for ultimate financial success.

Peter is proud of his training and background including a CPA, Masters in Taxation, Advanced Financial Planning designations, Accredited Investment Fiduciary designation, Registered Securities Principal, B.S. in business from U.C. Berkeley, Insurance Agent and Price Waterhouse alumni. However, Peter is prouder to be able to implement all of these skills sets when assessing client’s unique financial situations. Few advisors or firms have the training and experience to deliver such a comprehensive approach. PTWM can complete what is needed from planning conception through implementation.

This approach provides the most client satisfaction and positive feedback to PTWM. “We are often told by clients that our comprehensive approach implementing strategic tax planning is the missing element not found from other advisors. The challenge today is that clients have too much information coming at them daily. They need an experienced professional can that stay current with all new tax laws and interpret what is important and relevant to their situation. Our comprehensive financial approach can’t be replaced by software, hardware or websites. One of the greatest added value returns we offer our clients are tax savings which can sometimes be higher than actual investment returns” states Peter.

Most clients first come to PTWM as a CPA Tax Client or for a Comprehensive Financial Review. Both approaches allow PTWM to find tax savings and efficiencies which are often the greatest source of financial returns. More importantly, Peter states that this process allows PTWM to learn about each individual’s personal life goals that normally don’t come to life when just looking at the numbers. Unlike most CPAs, Peter is an extroverted people person that wants a personal relationship. This philosophy is the backbone of how PTWM works with each client.

The core tenants of this philosophy are to help each individual maximize their return on life through the various life stages.

1. Organization: We will help bring order to your financial life.

2. Accountability: We will help you follow through on your financial commitments.

3. Objectivity: We bring insight from the outside to help you avoid emotionally driven decisions in important tax and money matters.

4. Proactivity: We work with you to anticipate your life transitions and to be financially prepared for them. Time spent in preparation avoids time spent in reparation.

5. Education: We will explore what specific knowledge will be needed to succeed in your situation.

6. Partnership: We attempt to help you achieve the best life possible but will work in concert with you, not just for you, to make this possible.

Building Resilience in the New Year

A few of my colleagues at O’Connor Mortuary and I began a tradition a few years ago. Rather than create New Year’s resolutions that we were likely to discard by mid-February, we decided to choose a word, just one word, that was representative of our personal goals for the coming year.

The idea behind our tradition was to live out this word throughout the year, creating something purposeful and attainable. Three years ago, my word was “be”; simple yet profound for where I was in my life at that moment in time. What I needed most in the coming year was to give myself the gift of simply accepting things as they were in my life without trying to fix, change, or control.

That word, my word, “be” really resonates with me as I think of the resilience we have all demonstrated throughout the past year and into this new year.

Resilience is a process that helps us maintain mental well-being. It’s the ability to bounce back from life’s challenges and adversity. We can build resilience through accepting

our struggles, seeking out solutions to what is in our control, recognizing and using our strengths, practicing compassion with ourselves, and connecting meaningfully with others.

We all spent last year bouncing back from life’s challenges. The loss stacking so many of us experienced retriggered grief from our past. Sometimes we hang on to our anger and guilt associated with our losses. It becomes part of the fabric of our being and part of the life narrative we write for ourselves, “I have to suffer”; “I’m not worthy of having joy”; “I’m not enough.” Setting aside our guilt and acknowledging our losses is an important part of being resilient. We learn to let go of the illusion that we have control, let go of feelings of not being enough, and be forgiving of ourselves if we don’t accomplish all of our goals.

A big part of being able to make this shift in our belief system is to practice self-compassion. Dr. Kristen Neff, Professor of Human Development and Culture at University of Texas at Austin, describes three components of self-compassion: 1. Self-kindness: being warm and understanding toward ourselves rather than judgmental; 2. Common Humanity: understanding that I am not the only one suffering or making mistakes, that suffering and personal inadequacy is a part of our shared human experience; and 3. Mindfulness: taking a balanced approach to our negative emotions and observing them with openness and clarity. A friend of mine recently shared a quote with me which I think sums it up beautifully, “If your compassion doesn’t include yourself, it’s incomplete.”

Another important piece of resiliency is incorporating the practice of gratitude into our everyday lives. Dr. Robert Emmons, Professor of Psychology at US Davis, states that gratitude, the act of feeling thankful, can help enhance our physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. He discusses how we can incorporate gratitude into our lives; rather than adding it to our already busy list of “to-dos” and risking it becoming a burden, when we integrate it into our daily life by noticing things already happening around us, not taking things for granted, and looking at benefits we are receiving, it actually makes our lives lighter and easier and freer. It is possible to learn to find gratitude within our suffering, sorrow and loss. Even during challenging times, we can create opportunity for a grateful response by acknowledging our losses, thinking about what we are receiving at the moment, and reframing how we think about our experience.

Lastly, part of the goal of becoming more resilient is to find balance. As we learn to accept the fact that we are not now, and not ever, fully in control, we shift our mindset from control to connection. We are all connected at some level and positive relationships are key to helping us become more resilient. We function better when we are connected to one another.

As Maya Angelou so beautifully wrote, “I can be changed by what happens to me, but I refuse to be reduced by it.” Wishing you all a resilient new year.

South Coast Shutter and Shades

Operating honestly and with integrity has served as the foundation for the continued success of the Laguna Niguel-based South Coast Shutter and Shades for over 32 years. Owners Tom and Donna Schuster launched their own company after realizing that “on our own we would be able to offer quality products in an honest environment to our customers, as well as servicing the products we sell.”

Specializing in custom shutters, blinds (mini, faux, wood, vertical), cellular shades, woven woods, plantation and security shutters and everything in between, Tom and Donna offer free in-home consultations for design as well as measuring, they always include free professional installation and prefer to bring all of the samples to each client’s home to go over the assorted styles and many color options to suit each home’s interior and its homeowner’s unique lifestyle.

“We listen to you and then incorporate your ideas with ours to design your custom shutters, blinds or shades,” says Tom. “Our portfolios and samples are very extensive, so you will be able to envision how your windows are going to look when complete."

Tom and Donna, credit their success to date to the quality of customer service they and their team give their customers, which in turn creates a wonderful repeat and referral business. “Although there may be providers of similar products, there is no one that can match our superior customer service – from showing up on time, making precise measurements and flawless installations - and with a professional ‘can do’ attitude,” says Donna.

Tom adds that “our pricing with unbeatable discounts, sales support and the fact that we offer our customers an in-house design team at no additional charge is the first step in setting us apart from our competition. I am proud to say that we have built a reputation in the business for having the highest quality, best beauty, fit and finish and value available. All of our products come with a lifetime warranty.”

A 5-Star Yelp rated company, South Coast Shutter and Shades boasts scores of glowing testimonials online, including Debora R of Laguna Niguel who writes "Donna and Tom are amazing! Great products, great prices, great service.I've used them twice for two different businesses and I could not be happier. Donna makes suggestions based on what I tell her

my needs are and she has been spot on with her recommendations. Installations by Tom are quick and easy. Highly recommended!"

Another reviewer, Doug W. of Mission Viejo posted that "From the first call, I knew I was dealing with a reputable, experienced, HONEST company. Donna and Tom are absolute PROS and obviously take pride in their work … Their price was very competitive. Also, what they quote is what you pay - keep that in mind when talking to the "other guys" whose price seems to go up and up. All appointments including install were FAST. The installation was flawless. I had a question later that evening about my motorized shades and they called me back IMMEDIATELY. My impression is that I could call them 5 or 10 years from now and they would just as helpful."

Home Safety Advisors: Helping Seniors Live Safely in Their Own Home Longer!

By the time my friend’s grandmother passed away at 92, she had fallen six times. Two of those falls resulted in broken bones - once, her hip. Horrifying, to find oneself in that position. Tripped up by your walker or the corner of a rug. Often, a wet bathroom or kitchen floor.

She was in a home for five out of the six falls, and still, it took some time to respond, get her stabilized, diagnosed, and fully recovered. Falls, my friend and herfamily quickly learned, are the leading cause of injury related deaths in Americans aged 65 and older. She didn’t end up passing because of a slip up directly, but her bones certainly didn’t give her a pass either, in those last days.

Home Safety Advisor’s President Dave Riggle has a similar story, as do so many around the country. His mother passed from a fall in her bathroom, and was the direct impetus for his business beginnings. “None of us five kids had any idea she struggled, or we would have fixed it immediately. I have skin in this game - I don’t want anyone else to suffer like my mother did.” While other home improvement companies may include walk-in tubs as a part of their overall

offerings, safe bathrooms are the entire focus and area of specialization for Dave and his team of professionals. So much so that Dave personally interviewed over 400 seniors about the difficulties they were experiencing in order to provide the best possible product to meet their needs.

While the business formally began in Indiana, the team at Home Safety Advisors expanded their operation into the Southern California market a year ago and are thrilled to have met with such a positive response and feedback to their scope of services. Many clients come to them via word- ofmouth. And it’s not hard to see why. Installing something that could literally mean the difference between serious injury or not is no small feat. And something that Dave’s team takes extremely seriously. All of their walk-in tubs and showers are made in the U.S.A., come with a lifetime war- ranty, are great for health and easy to clean.

But perhaps a lesser known perk is the luxurious spa experience available in the privacy of your home.

“Their (occupational therapists) confi- dence in referring us speaks volumes about our capability and their trust in us,” says Dave. “This is rarely done in our industry, and certainly not by any big company.” The showers and baths are crafted right here in California, providing clients a spa-like experience with a side door. Once inside, just relax. Ergonomic faucets, a hand-held shower, and marine grade fiberglass combine to make your bathing experience relaxing, instead of stressful.

While most steps into a walk-in shower or bath are still 6” to 9” tall, Home Safety Advisors boast just a 2” threshold, low enough to greatly decrease – if not eliminate – your chances of spilling over the edge accidentally. Offering bench seats, grab bars and hand-held shower, HSA can even customize the threshold or seat to fit the client specifically.

As Certified Aging-in-Place Specialists (CAPS), Dave and his team understand the unique needs of older adults and will do everything they can to provide their clients and their families with a sense of confidence and safety in their own home. “We don’t want any slip ups: from the initial consultation to our single-day installation; we’re here to walk you through the unique experience of finding solutions to carry out your aging-in-place modifications.”

The Missing Link: A Simple Solution to Senior Home Selling

How does life look in the seventh, eighth or ninth decade? As one enters this period of life, adorned with wrinkles, heirlooms and too much yard work, there are countless concerns to consider. Selling your home, or relying on your adult children to do so- in a pandemic-painted world- shouldn’t be one of them.

Rob Perkins and sister Corinne Ross, the folks behind San Diego-based Senior Home Purchase Program (SHPP), know this all too well. After a decade of residential real estate investing, their personal experience revealed what was missing in this marketplace: a safe, simple and straightforward home selling program for seniors and their families.

“We watched our grandparents reach the point of no longer being able to live alone,” said Rob. “We also saw the effort it took from our entire family to support them through the transition of selling long-time homes and lining up new residences. It’s a hard period of life that calls on family to become overnight experts in real estate, organizing, cleaning and caretaking.”

When you add in selling a home during a global pandemic, it’s no easy task.

“We founded SHPP in 2015 with the mission of offering seniors a simple way to transition into senior living,”

said Perkins. “In 2020, safety has become paramount to our operations. COVID-19 has changed the way residential real estate is consumed, and our process frees sellers from many risks, including showing their home to strangers,” said Perkins.

The duo created a three-step process that rivals the traditional home sales process. Most notably, using SHPP eliminates the need for real estate agents, home preparation costs, and showings.

SHPP helped Camille, the adult daughter of transitioning parents in Encinitas, who shared:

“We contacted SHPP about my parent’s home of 35 years, which was ready for a full remodel and had many unfinished projects. It was hard for my parents to take the leap to sell, but they were treated very well by the SHPP team. There was minimal disturbance to their daily life, and that was so helpful. It was a short, smooth escrow, and we were thrilled when everything Rob laid out in the purchase offer, went through as planned.

All my parents had to do was focus on moving.”

Homes are sold to SHPP truly “as is” – clutter and all. There are no failed escrows, no commissions, no closing costs and no repair credits or seller concessions – it is a certain sale at a certain price, with a flexible closing date and access to a lease-back option.

With a traditional listing, the home seller typically needs to prepare the home – from cleaning to completing updates, repairs and staging – which can cost tens of thousands of dollars. At SHPP, homes are purchased in their current condition and the company pays for 100 percent of costs associated with the sale.

An initial home visit allows SHPP to gather necessary data about the home. SHPP then copiously does their homework on the property and the market. A second meeting is scheduled where SHPP presents their absolute best offer on the home.

“When presenting our offer, we illustrate how it compares to the alternative of selling on the open market”, said Ross. “Once the costs/fees are deducted from the alternative, our offer often makes the most sense.”

As the company, which receives the majority of its customers by referral, expands into Orange County and other areas, they will continue to deliver on their promise to serve seniors with integrity and transparency.

“We are in the business of helping people pilot an emotional and financially important decision, and we do not take this lightly,” said Ross. “We encourage our customers to discuss our no-pressure process with family, friends and trusted advisors before they make a decision.”

Backstreet Home Decor

One of South OC’s Most Unique Boutiques

Looks can definitely be deceiving. From the road, Backstreet Home Decor appears to be a small storefront, its windows displaying beautiful decorative items, jewelry, handbags and accessories. Step inside, however, and if you’re anything like me, you’ll discover that you could literally spend hours looking at all of owner Susan Smith's wonderful offerings, which range in style from Old World to contemporary.

Each piece is reflective of Susan’s keen eye for color, quality, texture, design detail and style - a fact not lost on the scores of professional designers who regularly shop here to decorate their client’s homes.

Homeowners who have taken advantage of Susan’s in-home consultation rave that she was able to suggest just the right furniture, decor, florals and color palette to create the look they were dreaming of - a fact that I can personally - and happily - attest to.

When our family moved from San Clemente to San Juan Capistrano, Susie’s showroom the first and only stop I needed to make for the decorative items and accessories that would make our new house a “home.” Susie’s vision of color, texture, line, shape, natural proportion and balance resulted in the beautiful floral arrangements and wall hangings that adorn our home, along with just the right accent and “statement pieces” to visually tie everything together.

While everything in her store speaks of high quality, her prices are surprisingly affordable. Because of longstanding relationships with vendors from the top decor lines across the county, Susan is able to acquire furniture and accessories at substantial discounts - which she in turn passes along to her customers.

“We only LOOK expensive,” she says. “What sets us apart is that all of our florals are custom designed on the premises. We work with our clientele to create exactly what they want. We really try to come up with the unusual - unique items that you just won’t find in every single store.”

Connect with Susie by stopping by the showroom at 307 N. El Camino Real in San Clemente, by calling (949) 498-2210 or visit www.backstreethomedecor.com

Making the Right Connections with Steve Carter Electric

The average American household has 45 lights in it. Cup lighting, recessed, portraiture; indoor, outdoor. Incandescent, CFL, LED. There are likely as many types of fixtures and functions in the residential electrical world as years Steve Carter Electric has been in business.

Astaple in south Orange County for the last thirty years, it isn’t hard to imagine why someone might call in the professionals at Steve Carter Electric for help wiring and all things electrical.

Dedicated to providing the best quality on every job, and investing in long-term service is the backbone of the business, and what Steve Carter himself carries into every job.

“We know that your home is more than a tangle of wires: its not the fixtures, its the connections made inside and out.” Specializing in whole house fans, lighting and electrical upgrades, repairs, back-up power, panel upgrades, landscape lighting, E.V charger installs and general

troubleshooting, there isn’t a job too complex to take on.

One of the perks of publishing South County Magazine is being able to give testimonials for local businesses that our family has personally utilized.

As a San Juan Capistrano resident blessed to live in coastal OC, I realize it’s ridiculous to refer to the unseasonable warm weather we experienced in September and October as uncomfortably “hot.” But warm air rises and our bedrooms are upstairswhere the temperature would get to the mid-80s, which would make it a little warmer than we’d like when trying to get to sleep at night.

My husband had been hankering to have a whole house fan installed after

we experienced the benefits for ourselves while visiting family friends in Northern California. With 10 minutes of turning the whole house fan on, all of the warm air had been evacuated from the home, replaced with the cooler ambient air from outside - dropping the temperature in the house by 10 degrees! He was sold. In researching local companies, we came across the Yelp 5-Star rated San Clemente-based family-owned Steve Carter Electric. We couldn’t be happier with the QuietCool whole house fan we had installed - and equally importantly, the service provided by Steve and his team of professionals and are now all set to make quick work of the warm air during our next “hot” spell.

“I knew back in high school that I wanted to learn the trade and become an electrician,” says Steve. “My Dad taught me to take pride in my workmanship, and I’ve carried that through until today. We don’t cut corners because we’d like to be your electricians for life.”

It’s Not Epoxy, It’s SpartaFlex!

For nearly 40 years, southern California homeowners have used Epoxy for garage and industrial floor coating projects despite its tendency to yellow, it’s soft and easy to scratch surface and it’s tendency to be permanently damaged by the hot, high performance tires found on most cars in the OC area.

Today OC homeowners don’t have to settle for Epoxy and all of its flaws anymore. SpartaFlex is an advanced, next generation 100% solids polyaspartic floor coating that gives your garage a beautiful finish that is 3x harder than epoxy, resists yellowing while also resisting permanent damage from hot tires. Perhaps best of all, SpartaFlex comes with a much better warranty than Epoxy.

Perkins Custom Coatings has been installing SpartaFlex on OC garage floors for nearly 14 years and has completed over 9,000 floors during that period of time. Its CEO and owner, Paul Frankel is considered by many to be the most knowledgeable contractor in the local market. “Unlike many of our competitors, we strive to do an onsite assessment including a moisture test for every floor coating project we install and instead of using the ‘one size fits all’ approach, we develop a coating solution that we believe will last for decades not just for a few years.”

Perkins uses only the most advanced surface preparation methods available and will either diamond grind or shot blast every floor that he installs. Old, failing, yellowed ep-

oxy coatings can also be removed during this same process. “Despite the fact that Coatings Industry requires concrete to at least be diamond ground before installing a new coating system, many of my competitors will install their coatings right over raw or pressure washed concrete just to save a few bucks - I will never do that” says Paul.

Perkins also is known for its professional and unique approach to repairing concrete cracks. “Anyone can slap some crack repair paste to cosmetically fix a crack” says Paul. A year later, when the concrete moves again and damages their brand new floor coating, the devastated homeowner will learn that this damage is not covered by the typical Epoxy warranty. “We are the only company that I know of that uses a ‘structural crack repair’ technique to fix cracks. The process is so effective we can offer our customers a warranty that can cover future damage from cracks!” says Paul.

After the surface prep is completed, a very effective moisture control primer is applied to the concrete. “This is extremely important” says Paul because for many homes built in Socal before 2005, elevated moisture vapor levels in the garage concrete can have a detrimental impact on floor coatings. Paul does a fast and non-destructive moisture test for every one of the pre-2005 homes he visits and develops a unique installation plan for each home. For newer homes, Paul and his crew can use a basic primer that dries a bit faster allowing installation of a garage floor in as little as one day!

The color chips that give the Perkins floor its legendary appearance are sandwiched between this primer and finish coat. Perkins carries the widest selection of colors and sizes in the market and uses a ‘full chip broadcast’, not a partial sprinkling of chips like many of its competitors. “The full chip broadcast gives the floor a consistent appearance and makes the floor much more durable and helps hide dirt better than the partial broadcast finish” says Paul.

Finally, Perkins installs the SpartaFlex polyaspartic finish coat and the finished garage comes to life. “Epoxy & SpartaFlex floor coatings are virtually identical in appearance when they are first installed” says Paul. “However, when you will really begin to appreciate a SpartaFlex floor is a few months down the road when you would typically start to see problems develop with an Epoxy floor. If there was a better material on the market, I would be selling it, but there isn’t and that is why we love selling SpartaFlex.”

For more information or to see for yourself the advantages of SpartaFlex over Epoxy, you can call Perkins Custom Coatings, at 866-330-1DAY (1329) or visit their informative website at www.perkinscustomcoatings.com.

Casanova Ristorante serves up some of the best Italian dishes this side of Venice

If you’re in the mood for delicious, authentic Italian fare served in a romantic atmosphere where the owners and staff make you feel like a personal guest in their home, look no farther than Casanova Ristorante.

My husband Tim discovered the Dana Point restaurant while vacationing in Venice, Italy over 15 years ago. Strolling by a quaint eatery, he noticed its sign showcased a sister establishment in Southern California not far from his San Clemente home. His experience of what he calls “truly terrific” culinary dishes prompted him to seek out Casanova Ristorante in the hopes that the “authentic Venetian” specialties served up stateside would rival its Italian counterpart.

The popular Dana Point restaurant apparently more than delivered because Casanova Ristorante has consistently been the eatery of choice when deciding on where to go on “date night.”

I can’t speak to the cuisine at its sister establishment in Venice, but I can tell you that literally everything I’ve tried on the menu here has been nothing short of superb. The service is excellent – attentive and unobtrusive – the ambiance is warm and friendly and its

popular cocktail lounge featuring specially selected wine list (and full bar) has a loyal following among locals and visitors alike.

Start with the Mozzarella Caprese, which arrives with slices of fresh tomato topped with creamy buffalo mozzarella cheese and basil and served with virgin olive oil. Another popular pick is the antipasto misto made up of a selection of cured meats and complementary cheeses and my personal fave: the Carpaccio al Salmone defined by crisp romaine, capers, radicchio topped with smoked salmon, lemon and olive oil.

For the main course, Tim’s favorite dishes include the “Pink Lady Fettuccine” made with chicken and sundried tomatoes tossed in a creamy Alfredo sauce and a flavorful Rigatoni Mamma Rosa with Italian sausage and mushrooms in a tomato sauce with a touch of cream. My favorites include the Lasagne al Forno which arrives with layers of perfectly al dente pasta, ricotta cheese and meat sauce baked with mozzarella cheese.

A seafood aficionado? Options abound – ranging from the Linguini Vongole Veraci (long, flat pasta with baby Manila clams sautéed in a white wine sauce) and Farfalle al Salmone (bowtie pasta with smoked salmon tossed in a cream and tomato sauce with a touch of vodka) to the Linguini alla Pescatora (long, flat pasta with fresh fish of the day, shrimp, calamari, mussels and clams in a light tomato sauce.

Portions are generous, but if you’ve saved room for a little something sweet … try the crème brulee with its perfectly carmelized top or the homemade tiramisu, a traditional favorite or an equally delicious warm chocolate cake accompanied by vanilla ice cream, whipped cream and drizzled with a rich chocolate sauce.

Dream Driving, the LA Way with Exotics Racing - The Supercar

Driving Experience

As a dad and longtime auto enthusiast, I have to say that my wife outdid herself this last Christmas when she gifted me with one of the most memorable - and more importantly, memory-making/ bonding experiences with our 13-year-old son: a half-day Exotics Racing “Supercar Driving Experience” for a unique tour of the City of Angels.

But instead of spending what feels like half your life on a double-decker bus bound for the spectacle of BelAir, Beverly Hills, Malibu and the super scenic Santa Monica via panoramic Pacific Coast Highway, the LA-based Exotics Racing sends its guests out on an exclusive guided tour in a fantasy car lineup that’s enough to turn even a celebrity’s head.

Since 2009, Exotics has been pumping its customers full of adrenaline on the track, by taking the wheel of one incredible machine or another, and pushing performance to its outside limits.

Exotic’s professionally designed Las Vegas racetrack offers the best straights and double apexes over its 1.2 mile length. Many auto enthusiasts, myself included, have taken the risk on open stretches of highway and country roads a time or two, pushing the pedal down a little too far, watching for the red and blue lights as highway patrol catches on. Here, you can rip around the same curve over and over without fear of a ticket or getting arrested. And there is a team of incredible professional instructors to guide you through the true capacity of the cars, as well as the basics you thought you learned in Mario Kart, but never actually tested out on paved road. In fact, these professionals aren’t there to rein you in or hold you back in any way … just the opposite. They want you to experience the thrill of the ride to full effect. Understeer, oversteer, progressive throttle. What 640 horsepower really feels like.

The largest fleet of exotic supercars awaits: from Italy, you’ve got Ferrari and Lamborghini - from Britain, the Aston Martin, and the cream of Audi, Mercedes-Benz, and Nissan’s crop as well. First in safety and service in the industry, Exotics Racing is the original supercar experience, designed to keep you dreaming about the drive far beyond your last lap on the track. Let’s be honest, we all have that vision of some valet accidentally tossing over the keys to a Ferrari 458 Italia after dinner out one night, but the chances of that actually happening are about as good as my first 911 winning a head-to-head with its 2019 counterpart. Plus, just handing over the keys like that is asking for trouble. The team of professional at Exotics take each driver through safety instruction, and then a side-by-side ride along.

Launched last year, the company’s Supercar Driving Experience takes touring to an entirely new level. The trip originates and concludes on sunny Ocean Avenue at the Santa Monica Pier, and travels across west Los Angeles winding along PCH through the Pacific Palisades - hugging the ocean along the way - into Beverly Hills be-

fore cruising past multi-million dollar mansions down Sunset Boulevard, along the iconic Rodeo Drive and finally the peaceful canopy of trees at Fox Studios. Except that each of the driving teams follows their guide (in the lead car - a Maserati GranTurismo and narrating along the way) behind the wheel of an alternating array of well … ultimate, luxurious supercars: a Ferrari 488 Spider, a Corvette C7 Z06 and my personal favorite - a Lamborghini Huracán Spyder.

At each stop along the tour, there was plenty of time to swap cars, take photos to document the ride, and wax poetic with the other enthusiasts over some of the most spectacularly fun road to drive in the world. The best part? All you need is a pair of sunglasses, a driver’s license, and a passion for some of the most amazing machines out there. Exotics Racing takes care of the rest.

Business Spotlight: SUBWAY

Local Restaurateur

Marco Scognamiglio is dedicated to “getting involved and giving back”

It isn’t always easy to trace the beginnings of a business, especially a lucrative one. Many times you have to wend back through a great many partnerships, over all the handshakes and deals made, past the initial boom to the original idea.

Sometimes though, there’s a crystallized history. An evident path. Such were the beginnings for Marco Scognamiglio. First generation college graduate from Arizona State University with a degree in Business Communication and Management, the Dana Point native followed in his parents’ footsteps into the local restaurant business. Marco currently operates five Southern California Subway franchises - in San Clemente, Mission Viejo, Laguna Hills and two in Dana Point.

His ties to the restaurant industry are deeply rooted and familial. His father, Enzo, owns the popular Brio Tuscany Grille in Dana Point and his mother, Jill, operated several Subway franchises herself so between his education and literally growing up in the industry, Marco was well poised to embark on his own entrepreneurial endeavors with the goal to “get involved and give back” to the community in which he lives and works.

“My first job was cleaning dishes and calamari in the back of my father’s Italian restaurant in Dana Point,” says Marco. “I saw the community he created in that space, and wanted nothing more than to build upon that legacy to create my own success and community relationships someday.”

Costs for Medicare Drug Coverage

You would expect to pay a monthly premium for a Medicare drug plan right? And an annual deductible (no higher than $445 in 2021) that needs to be met is generally the “norm” if you have a “stand-alone” drug plan. (Those who are enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan that includes drug coverage don’t have to suffer a name brand drug deductible).

But there is also an “Income Related Monthly Adjustment Amount” (IRMAA) that you’ll pay to Medicare if you make above $88,000 as an individual and $176,000 as a married couple.

Medicare uses the modified adjusted gross income reported on your IRS tax return from 2 years ago. The IRS provides this to Social Security. (so for 2021 they look at your 2019 A.G.I)

There are 5 income brackets that cause a person to pay more for their Medicare Part D (prescription drug) coverage. The range for what amount of IRMAA that you’ll pay ranges from $12.30 to $77.10 a month.

You need to carry Medicare drug coverage. Don’t try to “work the system” by just paying cash or using “GoodRX” to buy your medications. If you don’t have “credible drug coverage” (which means it covers both generic and name brand drugs at a certain copay or coinsurance level). then you’re accruing a late enrollment penalty. If you go over 63 days without a Medicare Drug plan once you’re first going onto Medicare, or already on Medicare, even if you add coverage the next chance you have (during the Annual Enrollment period) that penalty will be with you for the rest of your life

Life. Organized.

Classy Closets’ unique, custom solutions for the home and office can instantly double or even triple your storage space.

Closet organization is something of an oxymoron at my house. Same goes for my home office. I actually do know where everything is in the stacks of paper that perpetually reside atop my desk, but good luck having anyone else make rhyme or reason of my filing “system.”

I’m clearly a candidate for the handiwork of a company like Classy Closets – if it’s a matter of function or simply

a desire to have your mess aesthetically addressed, Classy Closets will customize your work/life space with made-toorder cabinetry and organization systems for your home office, garage, bedroom, laundry room, pantry, media centers, wallbeds and more.

Think you can’t afford to bring in the professionals? Classy Closets, which has served all of Orange County and

San Diego since 2003, offers organization options for virtually every budget – from basic white melanine to solid wood cabinetry.

“Nothing we do is cookie cutter,” says Company CFO Gary Pavitt. “Although Classy Closets is a franchise, we’re not governed by the rules that typically dictate processes of typical franchise operations – particularly with regard to the materials and mounting systems we use. What works in terms of style and function at a home in Tucson, for instance, wouldn’t necessarily translate to a house in Huntington Beach. So we have the freedom to customize our work to our client’s specific needs and desires.”

Another differentiator is that Gary and his team manufacture their products right here in Southern California, which affords them the ability to offer their clients a broader range of product options at a level of quality that is “second to none.” And because they are “hands-on” from design consultation to manufacture and installation, Gary and his staff pride themselves on providing unparalleled customer service.

“What’s really fun is having the ability to create the products in-house,” says Gary. “I really enjoy introducing new ways to make things better, bringing in new products and keeping up with the latest trends in the industry. We go out of our way to keep our customers satisfied … that’s what makes it all worthwhile. As in any business, your customers are golden and we’ve been very fortunate that a large percentage of our business is in referrals.”

Repeat customers Marta and Mike Fowler of San Diego say that Classy Closets is a “dream company - one that not only delivers beautiful craftsmanship, but also that elusive quality

of excellent service. Every good cliché regarding their work applies.”

“This is our second home that Classy Closets has refined to meet all our storage needs, from closets to garage, from bathroom storage to entertainment center. And they never try to oversell, giving honest recommendations for products, charging fair prices within reach,” says Marta. “Their creative solutions and impeccable workmanship combine to make functional pieces we love living with. We have only one warning: Classy Closets is addictive, and you will find yourself wanting to spread the good news.”

In a letter to Gary’s business partner Kate Monaghan, Carlsbad-based Interior Designer Karen Wirrig echoes the Fowler’s sentiment and adds that “my new master closet is beautiful and your attention to detail is evident. I also want to commend your installation crew. They were on time, tidy, polite, and did excellent work … I will wholeheartedly recommend your company to all my clients. It has been a pleasure to work with you all.”

Why Repipe when you can ?

Lead-Free, Leak-Free Pipe Protection

It is safe to say that I know nothing about pipes. I know a little about drywall, and some about framing; my husband has his general contractor’s license so I’ve picked up a few nuggets of knowledge over the years - albeit in conversation, not in practice.

Pipes, however, are a complete mystery. I have family who live on the East Coast, where pipes seem to burst with some degree of frequency in the winter, but that is the extent of my experience via six degrees of separation. Since our family moved into our “new” home in San Juan Capistrano a few years ago, we have since become something of an expert on experts: those who do and don’t know anything about pipes. There are a bunch of things I can now catch you up on: leaks, sprinkler lines, lead testing. But truly, all you need to know is this: In many cases, ePIPE can have your pipes restored the same day without displacing you from your home.

Topping my list of folks I’d call expert, ePIPE has been in business since 1999. With over 40 international and US-based patents, the company has contracts with the US Department of Defense, several counties across the States, schools, HOA’s, and thousands of individual homeowners nationwide.

Jason Houck, National Sales Director notes “twenty years ago this process was developed to be more convenient, less destructive, longer lasting, and healthier. Now it’s a patented, proven process used around the globe.” Traditional systems wreak havoc on a home, tearing up floors, walls, and ceilings. To get to the pipe, you have to get everything else out of the way: and then to replace the pipe, you have to remove what is there. “Instead of re-piping, we restore pipes in place. Many homes can be completed in a day, with the water going back on in a number of hours.”

Pool piping, fire sprinkler systems, water lines - ePIPE deals with it all. They’ll even test for lead and remediate as a LeadSmart® Service provider. Any number of factors can lead to corrosion in a system, often in as little as two years after installation. Any number of factors can lead to pinhole or slab leaks. So what happens next? If your pipes were simply failing due to changing water chemistry, perhaps you’re wondering if there is a better pipe? Turns out the restoration of your pressurized system can be as simple as drying, cleaning and applying ePIPE's patented epoxy coating. “The cleaning process prepares the internal pipe surface for proper bonding,” says Jason. “A bit like sanding before you paint.”

In researching what ePIPE has to offer in terms of the process, I don’t see the word drilling, or destruction, or demolition anywhere. Taking care of

a problem once it begins is one thing, but ensuring that you won’t have that problem for years down the road is entirely different.

Restored piping protects against corroding and pitting, in turn reducing copper and lead leaching.

“Because there is no need to destroy walls, ceilings, or floors, you save a significant amount of money in reconstruction costs,” says Jason. “I’ll keep saying it: we do the work without the mess and expense.” Ranked in the top 1% of over 300,000 California contractors, ePIPE is here to ensure your pipes deliver the way they were made to. That’s really all I need to know.

CITY OF HOPE LAUNCHES LEADING-EDGE SCREENINGS AND PROGRAMS TO COUNTER LUNG CANCER

Finding lung cancer at its earliest stage and having access to highly specialized cancer care experts gives Orange County patients their best shot for survival

Delivering on its promise to bring lifesaving cancer care to Orange County, City of Hope is launching early detection and prevention programs to fight lung cancer –the second most common cancer in Orange County and the number one cause of OC cancer deaths.

These services, provided by highly specialized cancer experts are intended to save lives and provide local residents much-needed resources for combatting this deadly disease.

To meet the community’s pressing need for state-of-the-art lung cancer testing, a new low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) screening program has been launched at City of Hope’s Newport Beach location.

The world-renowned cancer center is currently taking appointments for

lung cancer screenings, with screening taking place at Newport Diagnostic Center.

“Orange County deserves its best shot against lung cancer,” says Ravi Salgia, M.D., Ph.D., the Arthur & Rosalie Kaplan Chair in Medical Oncology at City of Hope, and one of the world’s leading experts on lung cancer treatment. “That’s why we are introducing a screening program that detects lung cancers earlier and greatly enhances the odds of survival. And this is just the latest addition to our many breakthrough lung cancer research and treatment capabilities, including City of Hope’s pioneering use of targeted therapies and personalized medicine to determine the best treatment path for each patient.”

The test is quick and easy and finds lung cancer early. It uses low-dos-

age x-rays to produce images of the body from different points of view. The scan takes only seconds, and it doesn’t cause discomfort. The vast majority of lung cancers detected using LDCT can be cured.

Research shows that LDCT does a better job finding lung tumors and saves more lives than a routine chest x-ray. In fact, it is the only lung cancer screening recommended by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF). The USPSTF recommends LDCT for people age 50-80 who currently smoke or used to smoke.

“One of the challenges with lung cancer is that it often doesn’t produce symptoms until it is well advanced,” says Dan J. Raz, M.D., M.A.S., a lung cancer surgeon and co-director of the lung cancer program at City of Hope.

“However, we are highly encouraged

“Lung cancer screening saves lives. You want to find and fight lung cancer as early as possible, when it can be cured,”
Dan Raz, M.D., M.A.S.

because studies show that lung cancer detected by LDCT screening will be discovered at an early stage 64% to 85% of the time. It is cost-effective, causes no patient discomfort, and is highly reliable. These factors can make all the difference and lead to a much more positive prognosis for patients. That’s why we are raising awareness among both patients and primary care physicians about the efficacy and accessibility of this lifesaving test.”

However, right now only around 15 percent of lung cancer cases are diagnosed early on, which means people are at risk of missing the opportunity to take their best shot against the disease.

“With breakthroughs being made continually in lung cancer research and treatment, patients have more reason for hope than ever,” Raz said. “Lung cancer is serious, but people need to know that early detection with LDCT and early intervention

make lung cancer a curable disease.”

Every LDCT is read and interpreted by a highly specialized City of Hope physician who is available to consult with the patient and their primary care physician on the results. The screening can also help identify other treatable smoking-related diseases like emphysema and heart disease.

For those whose tests indicate cancer, there is immediate access to City of Hope’s world-renowned multispecialty team of lung cancer experts, along with outstanding compassionate care for patients and families.

In another move to help Orange Countians reverse lung cancer incidence, City of Hope offers an innovative virtual smoking cessation program. This social support program is open to people who smoke now or in the past and can be combined with City of Hope’s tobacco dependency program that includes medications to overcome withdrawal symptoms and

You may qualify for a lung cancer screening if you are a high-risk current or former smoker. You may also qualify if you are outside the standard criteria or have additional risk factors.

LDCT is recommended for people who are 50-80 years of age who have smoked the equivalent of a pack a day for 20 years and who currently smoke or have quit smoking within the last 15 years.

This non-invasive lifesaving screening is now available. Please call 626-535-3983 for more information or to schedule an appointment.

behavioral strategies to break habits that trigger smoking. The emphasis is on getting better, not shaming or blaming those who have yet to rid cigarettes from their lives.

People who smoke or used to smoke should talk to their doctors about lung cancer screenings or contact City of Hope to get screened, Raz said.

“Lung cancer screening saves lives,” Raz said. “You want to find and fight lung cancer as early as possible, when it can be cured.”

Travel Can Be Tough on Your Legs

Medical compression stockings and socks are a travel essential

Many people travel long distances and have to remain seated for two or three hours or even longer. They might not think much of it, but when movement is constrained, the blood circulation in the legs is restricted. This can contribute to heavy legs, leg pain and swollen feet and ankles.

Prolonged sitting is also a major risk factor for the development of phlebitis and Deep-vein Thrombosis (DVT). Deep-vein Thrombosis involves the formation of blood clots (thrombi) in the deep leg veins during prolonged inactivity. In some cases, blood clots

can migrate to the lungs resulting in a pulmonary embolism.

When seated without moving for a few hours – whether by plane, train or automobile - the risk of DVT could be four times higher and can happen

Livia De Los Rios is the

Tips to reducing the discomfort and risks associated with prolonged inactivity:

• Wear comfortable clothing

• Drink plenty of fluids (avoid alcohol)

• Stand up and stretch several times during travel

• Wear gradient compression legwear

JOBST™ medical compression stockings and socks are a simple and comfortable way to help avoid heavy, tired and achy legs and the swelling of feet and ankles.

Unlike the products available at your local drugstore, JOBST™ medical compression stockings and socks are recommended by physicians for their clinically proven gradient compression benefit. Medical compression products reduce swelling and helps prevent the pooling of fluid in the venous or lymph systems. The stylish cotton blend dress socks and compression hose available today increase tissue pressure to help balance the flow of fluid across the capillaries of the limb.

The Perfect Workout: 20 Minutes to Reverse the Effects of Aging

Recently, I, much like many Americans headed into their mid-50’s, realized that it was going to take much more than a brisk walk or a high intensity interval gym session to hold onto the muscle mass I’d worked so hard to attain, then maintain over the years. Also like many Americans, I spent too much time and money attempting to uncover the one magical combination of spinach salads, green smoothies, and exercise that would help me achieve that increasingly elusive goal.

Adults who don’t add a weight regimen into their weekly workout routine lose an average of a half pound of lean muscle each year after the age of 25. Women and men in their 50s, 60s, 70s and beyond who are striving to stay strong, avoid eventual falls, and keep up their energy levels sometimes need a little extra help. That's where LeAnne Fuller and The Perfect Workout comes in.

More than 20 years in practice, The Perfect Workout is LeAnne’s long-time purpose come to fruition.

“After taking pilates and yoga through my 30’s, I started the certification process to train them both," she says. "Going through the certification process led to some important realizations about my trajectory in life, and where I wanted to end up. Not one option included working just to work, or simply to bring home a paycheck. I needed to help people: to help them get healthy.”

Sometimes, slow is fast, and the road LeAnne was on led her straight to The Perfect Workout’s doorstep a week later. Taking a step from training to running studios was simple, and from there to hiring trainers and leading certifications a no brainer. “My capacity to educate grew and grew, and thrilled me as I saw clients get stronger with every class. Folks started avoiding falls, having more energy to play with their children and grandchildren. It has been unbelievably satisfying.”

From Facility Manager of Redondo Beach to Regional Manager of Dallas, Houston, LA, SF, Orange County and San Diego, LeAnne has seen a broad range of clients, and an even more amazing spectrum of results. Specializing in 1-1 personal training, The Perfect Workout takes participants through slow motion strength training, engaging more muscle fibers than a typical workout. Reducing momentum provides a bigger challenge in a smaller time frame: so you can get the results you want in two 20-minute workouts a week instead of hours in the gym day after day. “Each exercise is performed by lifting weights for approximately 10 seconds and lowering the weight for another 10 seconds. You reach ideal intensity quickly- and then move on!”

Practicing safe, efficient movement allows LeAnne to guarantee you’ll be stronger in 6 weeks. Built for men and women who don’t want a traditional gym experience, or have never worked out but want to be healthy and strong, The Perfect Workout is, well, the perfect workout.

PERFECT CUT

"Whatever your hair needs, I desire and appreciate the opportunity to make your hair dreams come true.”

Some people are born great; some people create their own greatness.

For Victoria Vannini, creating with hair and giving her clients a style that reflects their personality and ‘true self ’ is more than just a “cut and color.”

“It begins with the consultation,” says Victoria. “I want to know about your lifestyle and career. [About] the hair products and tools you use. This is essential in evaluating the condition and texture of your hair and helps us to come to a place that is realistic - at the beginning and where we want to go for the future.”

Education is an important element to Victoria’s career. After graduating from cosmetology school, Victoria continued at the Vidal Sassoon Academy in Los Angeles. While apprenticing at the Carlton Hair Salon at Crystal Court for one year, she honed her skills with creative color and hair cutting. From there, she went on to be an educator for Paul Mitchell. She currently takes classes at the Unite Academy in Carlsbad.

1. Get frequent trims - Yes REALLY... Split ends leads to your hair losing length and strength !!!

2. Resist the urge to go Blonde (unless you are a Natural). When the cuticle of the hair is damaged from bleach, you can have more breakage or split ends.

3. Distribute the Natural Oils in your Hair... Don’t overwash, once to three times a week depending on condition and age of hair. Use a Boar bristle brush to distribute your scalp’s natural oils evenly to keep hair naturally moistened.

4. Finish your Shampoo and Conditioner with a cool rinse to seal the cuticle and strengthen your hair.

5. Avoid frequent Heat (styling tools) but when you do, use a heat protectant.

6. Eat the right foods. Feed your hair from the inside by increasing your protein intake with fish, beans and nuts.

THE UROLIFT® SYSTEM… NEW OFFICE BASED TREATMENT OPTION TO TREAT BPH.

BPH, also known as an enlarged prostate, is a common condition that affects over 40 million men in the United States. Many mistakenly believe that BPH only affects older men, but men in their 40’s and 50’s may suffer with symptoms of BPH.

BPH places pressure on the urethra and prevents the bladder from functioning normally and/or emptying completely. Symptoms can include frequent and urgent urination, weak urine flow, interrupted sleep from multiple trips to the bathroom, and diminished sexual activity.

“BPH symptoms are more than a nuisance - many men find their quality of life is negatively impacted by ongoing symptoms,” says Dr. Robert Pugach, Medical Director of Pacific Coast Urology Medical Center, (PCUMC).

Most men diagnosed with BPH are given medications to address their symptoms. However, these prescriptions often don’t provide adequate relief and may cause dizziness, fatigue, and sexual dysfunction. They

have also recently been shown to be a potential cause of dementia and depression. Many men were left with the only other option of surgery - that is until now.

“We are thrilled with development of Urolift®. Now, for the first time, urologists have an effective solution to address BPH that avoids the complications and side effects of surgery or ineffective medications,” says Dr. Pugach. “The UroLift® System, offered at PCUMC, is a revolutionary, minimally invasive technology which relieves prostate obstruction instantly and opens the urethra without cutting, heating or removing prostate tissue.”

The UroLift® System employs a delivery device to insert the UroLift® permanent implants which are placed during a minimally invasive, in-office procedure. Evans Tran, Physician Assistant at PCUMC explains to patients that “for men who are considered good candidates for Urolift®, the success rates are around 90%. There is minimal downtime and sexual function is preserved!”

Dr. Robert Pugach and Evans Tran have been using the Urolift® System with great success for over 2 years. In January of this year they were appointed to the prestigious Urolift® teaching faculty for Teleflex/NEOTRACT, the manufacturers of Urolift® Pacific Coast Urology Medical Center is also both a National Center of Excellence and Teaching Center for Urolift®

“It is an honor to work with the NEOTRACT team to educate and train urologists, advanced healthcare professionals, and other doctors throughout the United States on this remarkable device,” says Dr. Pugach and Ms. Tran.

Mission Viejo Wigs: Where Customers are “Family”

Mission Viejo Wigs is truly a family business. Not in the traditional sense, where its owners and operators share the same genes. But rather in such a way that every person who has walked through Owner Betty Darroch’s doors in the 30+ years she has been in operation immediately felt like a member of Darroch’s extended family.

As a professional hair and wig stylist since 1962, Betty began her career at CBS where her résumé reads like a celebrity screenplay starring the coifs of a veritable “who’s who” of Hollywood: Ann Margaret, Carol Lawrence, the Midnight Specials and the Sonny & Cher Show. She went on to work for the Hallelujah Hollywood Show at the MGM Hotel in Las Vegas.

But it wasn’t until she opened her own business in Mission Viejo that she felt as though she were “truly doing God’s work.”

Her clients today include people who are experiencing hair loss due to chemotherapy treatment, alopecia or other medical conditions. Betty specializes in wigs, hairpieces and toupees for women, men and children and carries only the highest quality brands. Each wig or hairpiece is custom fit to the client for the most natural look and feel – no one will know you’re wearing a wig unless you tell them.

received many compliments on her “new do” and no one was the wiser.

It’s been over nine years since my mother completed treatment and is now leading a cancer-free life. Although her own hair has long since grown back, she still often prefers to wear Betty’s wigs on “bad hair days.”

Thank you Betty!

“Hair loss, whether it is the result of illness, the aging process or heredity, can be a traumatic and emotionally draining experience,” says Betty. “We work with people on a daily basis who are facing the issue of hair loss for the first time. Our goal is to help you find the solution that works best for you and do so in a caring way that makes you realize that you are not alone.”

There are wonderful testimonials from longtime customers on her web site (missionviejowigs. com), but for me, the best testament to Betty’s genuine, caring nature came from a source closer to home.

When my mother was diagnosed with lung cancer six years ago, there were so many aspects of what she was facing - including the side effects associated wit chemotherapy treatment – that were out of our control. But my mother’s appearance was something she felt she could dictate. We knew she would lose her hair, but she was determined not to “look like a sick person.”

From the moment my mother met Betty, she knew she had found the right place and more importantly, the right person to help her. Betty shared so many stories of survival – of longtime customers and friends who fought a similar battle and won. Her warm embrace and inspired  hope and help steel her resolve to maintain a positive, fighting attitude when she was diagnosed with lung cancer.

The wig Betty selected was the perfect color and style for my mother’s face (and head) shape. The wig was so natural looking that my mother
