Another New Beginning: Planning for the Challenges and Opportunities of 2014

It is 2014 and another new beginning. With the holiday season behind us, and a fresh page on the calendar, our thoughts turn to the future What can we expect the economy to do in 2014? What challenges and opportunities will we find ahead? Probably the best way to get to the answers to those questions is to look at what the experts are saying
On a national level, the outlook for economic growth in 2014 will most likely brighten; starting in the first quarter and growing somewhere between 2 0% and 2 75% for the year The fuel for this growth will likely be the relaxation of fiscal policy, improvements in the demand for labor, and higher asset valuations Household incomes are expected to grow, partly due to improvement in job growth and partly due to improvement in the financial condition of employers. The housing sector will, most likely, continue to improve.
The two areas to watch are inflation, expected to increase to just under 2% in 2014; and, the effect of higher interest rates on the housing sector
In Orange County (Santa Ana Anaheim Irvine MD), 2014 also looks bright. The current unemployment rate of 5.8% could fall to under 5% if the current trend continues New housing starts are expected to increase but sales of existing homes seem to be slowing down The effect of higher residential mortgage rates could dampen the market Better news is that demand for commercial and industrial loans is growing, indicating that businesses expect continued economic recovery
Of course the experts always caution that our complex economy is difficult to predict as the variables are ever changing President Truman famously said that he was only going to hire one-armed economists so they couldn’t say “on the other hand.”
Regardless of how one reaches their assumptions of the challenges and opportunities for 2014, a plan is necessary
Some of the more organized business owners and managers already have a written plan for the New Year Many more have a general idea of what needs to be done, just not in writing In either case, now it is time to execute.
Hopefully a team of advisors and resources has been built including an accountant (tax advisor), attorney, financial planner, and, of course, a banker. One of the first steps is determining the financing necessary to execute the plan Should the financing come from capital paid in by the owners, or be borrowed? Discussing the plan with the banker on the team will help clarify these issues
Depending on the elements within the plan, the banker will also suggest other banking solutions that will enhance control and increase efficiency For example, if the plan anticipates an increase in the number of checks received, adding remote deposit capture (depositing checks through a scanner attached to the customer’s computer) eliminates trips to the bank with same day credit for deposits received before a cut-off time With our modern banking technology, there are a variety of tools available to businesses that create efficiency and save time and money

I hate my inner arms I am 56 years old, have never been fat, I eat well and exercise almost every day. My muscles are strong but the skin of my inner arms jiggles when I move my arm and my arms look gross. I saw a plastic surgeon who tried to talk me into having inner arm skin excised and showed me some photographs I could not believe the scar! We would have to see you in person to let you know what options would be best suited to your situation.Treatments do range from a simple liposuction procedure to an excision of inner arm skin Inner arm skin excision is called a brachioplasty and is an excellent procedure for patients who have a massive skin excess following weight loss But you are correct in saying that the resultant scar extends from the arm pit to the elbow, will usually spread and be noticeable, and is not appropriate for most patients who are not in the massive weight loss category. In someone who has lost a hundred pounds and began with a lot of excess skin, the scar is an acceptable trade off to having the extra skin Liposuction is another alternative but is most effective in younger patients who do have a mild fatty excess, no skin excess, and still have good skin tone But if your friend is similar to you in age, with some loss of skin elasticity, it would be unlikely for a liposuction alone to improve the inner arm skin laxity For tunately, we now have an alternative for the “in between” patients who are too lax for a liposuction alone but not bad enough to warrant the long and visible scar along the inner arm Our new option is a radiofrequency treatment in which, after a liposuction, through the same tiny stab wounds, a radiofrequency probe with a

Medicare Advantage Plans Dis-enrollment Period
January 1 through February 14, 2014 – Members of Medicare Advantage Plans are allowed to dis-enroll from their current plan and go back to traditional Medicare. The process is simple You enroll in a Stand-alone Medicare Prescription drug plan and that will knock you out of your Medicare Advantage plan (because it has prescription drug coverage and the government only allows you to have one drug plan at a time) When you enroll in that standalone prescription drug plan we use a “special election period” code on the application so that it’s approved by Medicare
You can then apply for a Medicare Supplemental plan at the same time, or anytime during the year, which I highly recommend. There are no deadlines or cut-offs for Medicare supplemental plans if you’re 65 or over, it’s basically “open-enrollment” all year, but you have to say, “no” to a few underwriting questions, but they have to do with being in the hospital in the last 90 days, end-stage renal failure, and needing a major surgery in the next 2 years that hasn’t happened (such as surgery for cancer, hear t, brain, organ .transplant, joint replacement , vascular, and back or spine).

Before deciding any other issues about taxes or rates of return or how to pay for your young Einstein’s PhD. at USC, consider who will parent your children if you and your beloved are not here for the duration of their upbringing
We could populate a town the size of Anaheim with the parents who avoid choosing their replacements because the very thought of the question tends to give them the creeps Understandable, but we all know that the single most important issue in your life is the wellbeing of your child, so the single most important step you can take in planning for your child’s future is to make sure there is someone there to be a parent to him or her should you be off the scene. So, how to tackle this sensitive task sensibly? First, sit down together and select a triad of names for your counsel to list as your children’s parents Also consider what happens if one of the members of the couple you select passes away or if the couple gets a divorce. That is a crucial issue that your lawyer needs to address in your documents (most likely the pour over

Some of us are blessed with large families that we get along with; some are not. Think about the core values you share in your household, and try to consider whose family, and its leaders, have goals and dreams that mirror those of your family circle
Remember a simple fact of life: some of the best families in the universe are ones where the kids were invited into the homes they belonged to, rather than having been born into them. My two best friends both a new home, it makes our selection process a great deal less traumatic than what it might otherwise be. We’re giving our kids a second chance if we are gone.

The ushering in of the New Year comes with big hopes and dreams According to USA.gov, getting fit ranks among the most popular New Years resolutions Sadly, there’s only about a six-percent success rate for all resolutions
Maybe that’s because people are approaching it the wrong way When it comes to getting fit, a few good habits can go a long way. The key to success in 2014 s all about creating good habits one small step at a time. Anybody can do it. Here are five simple steps to help get you off on the right foot:
Announce your plan
Make it loud and clear. Throw yourself a New Years Resolution party and celebrate the good habits you are starting.
Health comes from the inside out Consider a “no white food diet” or “no sugar diet ” Start small Don’t eliminate everything at once (i e eliminate one sugar source for a week and then slowly eliminate another and week by week have less sugar).
Choose a mindful exercise
Try a new activity that gets your mind and body working together, such as pilates or yoga Again, start small, these are habits you’re developing for a lifetime No need to feel like you need to go everyday, that just adds more stress and pressure. Commit to one class a week, adding more as your habits change.
Everyday activity habit
Set 10 minutes to move on your own No gym required Come up with something you can do first thing when you wake, or during a lunch break, or when needed to reconnect physically An example would be to create a sit-up challenge, or push-up challenge followed by a few stretches
Be accountable
Some days are harder then others, but remember, it doesn’t need to change over night And don’t forget the party you had, all those people will lift you through the tough times All it takes is small baby steps to successfully create good habits for a lifetime.

“Beauty and the Beast” was performed in the Port Hole Theatre at Dana Hills High School It was a beautiful, exhilarating, tear jerking, and truly hilarious evening of theatre. Stirring and stunning vocal performances by the South Orange County School of the Arts cast, (many of whom were seniors) brought down the house. They received a fully deserved standing ovation It made the Christmas season brighter to have shared this heart-warming musical with friends and parents.

Age Well Senior Services recently invited my colleagues and I to a local Senior Center to hold a panel discussion entitled the “Fiscal Fitness Fiduciary Seminar” to highlight the importance of selecting a proper team of professionals (i e attorney, CPA, financial advisor, fiduciary, third party witnesses, etc ) who can assist seniors during their golden years and carry out their ultimate wishes after their demise Most attendees were aware of their need for professionals in the first three categories, yet had little or no exposure to the services provided by a fiduciary and the importance of a third party witness.
When we introduced the panel of fiduciaries, Herb Cohen, Becky Cote, and myself, our guests were particularly engaged since no one had heard of the recent California requirement that all non-family member trustees, executors, conservators, or agents under powers of attorney, need a license granted by the Professional Fiduciaries Bureau from the Department of Consumer Affairs, The licensing board ensures that the fiduciary has achieved the required educational and vocational experience, a rigorous criminal background check (including fingerprinting), passed both a California exam and a National exam, and takes a minimum of 15 hours of continuing education each year, similar to requirements of other professional advisors. Years ago, when I began my career writing for a regional business/lifestyle magazine, I had the pleasure of serving as the publication’s resident “restaurant reviewer.” This meant that I was able to sample the culinary offerings of dining establishments across the county –from newly opened eateries to longstanding favorites.
At the risk of dating myself, it was nearly 20 years ago that “discovered” Romeo Cucina’s Laguna Beach location (249 Broadway) and since getting married and moving to South County in 2006, I have made it a point to add the eatery to my list whenever I visit the coastal city But the restaurant’s second location is even easier for me to get to Right in the heart of Laguna Niguel (28241 Crown Valley Parkway), Romeo Cucina serves up authentic Italian dishes following old family recipes and new, inventive trends (even though the original location has been open over 20 years, the menu continually changes to reflect the latest culinary trends and tastes as the owners travel to and from their homeland each year)
The original four brothers and two sisters of the Romeo family who started the restaurant –first the Laguna Beach location in 1991 and then the Laguna Niguel restaurant in 1995 - are natives of Calabria, the southernmost province of the Italian boot. Both locations remain a true “family” operation as sisters Ada and Tina Romeo run the Laguna Niguel location while Ada’s husband, Mike, is the chef responsible for the culinary creations.
A basket of aromatic, crusty, house-baked bread arrives within minutes of seating accompanied by the restaurant’s signature "Olive Taponata” is a wonderfully flavorful olive tapenade made from family recipe using assorted Mediterranean olives
The wood-burning oven gives Romeo Cucina’s thin crust pizzas its crispy texture and slightly smoky flavor. As in Italy, there is just enough cheese and tomato sauce to accent the shiitake, oyster and wild mushrooms that make up the “al funghi selvaggi ”

Mission San Juan Capistrano is a place of legend and folklore, and recently the bir thplace of Orange County granted the SyFy Channel's "Ghost Hunters" crew limited access to investigate public claims of paranormal
The San Juan Capistrano community's pleas for an investigation were heard, and the show was aired on Wednesday on the SyFy Channel, which will air the show numerous times in the coming weeks (check local listings for dates and times)
The Ghost Hunters crew focused on claims of sightings of "Magdalena," a young woman who perished while in the Great Stone Church during the 1812 earthquake

The story goes ...
Magdalena was about 15 or 16 years old, young and beautiful. She fell in love with a young man named Teofilo He was a promising artist who painted the wall frescos inside the newly built Great Stone Church. Magdalena’s father, was a soldier and he forbid her to see Teofilo because he was not of the same social standing
Although forbidden to see each other, Magdalena managed to slip away and meet Teofilo secretly. One day they were caught by her father. Magdalena was severely punished Her father required her to confess to the priest. As part of her punishment, she was to walk in front of the congregation holding a penitents candle The day she was to do this was December 8th, 1812*. At the early morning mass she went inside the Great Stone Church and lit her candle As she carried the candle up the aisle toward the priest to say her penance, the earth began to shake. A large earthquake struck. It is estimated that it was a 6 9 magnitude earthquake The bell tower swayed and fell on top of the church. People screamed trying to make it toward the door, but unfor tunately, the door was jammed For ty people were buried alive under the rubble. It took months for the rubble to be cleared and the bodies to be buried Among the dead was a young girl, Magdalena, with a candle still in her hand
It is said that on a night of a half-moon one can see her face in the remaining window of the Great Stone Church, still doing penance for her forbidden love

One of Orange County’s most iconic family business stories began on the second floor of a little Chinese restaurant in Sao Paolo, Brazil. That’s where three brothers, Wing, Ed and Mingo, spent their earliest years and where, after school, you could find them in their parents’ restauant below, peeling shrimp or washing dishes. In 1975, he family moved here, and when the boys weren’t busy helping their parents with their new restaurant venture, they were surfing. Their love of the spor t saw them frequenting Baja, where they grew to crave he specialty of charbroiled fish, salsa and tortillas. In 988 the brothers decided to combine their love of surf and food to create a restaurant with an eclectic Mexican/Brazilian/Asian menu and a Hawaian north-shore vibe. Wahoo’s Fish Taco was born
In 2013, the Wahoo’s brothers celebrated their 25th anniversary in business Since the opening of the first location an entire generation has come of age – and it knows Wahoo’s. Mom comes back time and again because it’s easy, affordable and healthy; and the kids don’t mind because, frankly, Wahoo’s is a cool place to hang
“Hanging out was the real inspiration behind Wahoo’s,” says Wing Lam, the brother whose face you are most likely to have seen around town, since he does most of the public interface while Ed and Mingo are more focused on building and operations “I just wanted to hang out with my buddies who were surfers and in the OC surf industry. I love to surf, but I wasn’t as good as most of the guys I wanted to hang out with, so having a place where they could all hang allowed me to be part of their tribe.”

For all their growth, Wahoo’s remains essentially local Wahoo’s hasn’t just been a place to feed Orange County kids quality food in a positive atmosphere; many of those kids end up going to work for Wahoo’s, which employs over 700 Southern Californians and about 2,000 people chainwide All those good vibes and delicious Mexican/ Brazilian/Asianinspired dishes aren’t just good for our souls and bellies; they’re good for our economy
Wing and his brothers keep the tribe vibe alive by par ticipating in over 100 events each year across Orange County. They sponsor charitable functions, golf tournaments and corporate events, but they get really excited about events that interest and benefit kids: spor ts events, athletics programs, school fundraisers, local surf and skate contests and more. Their “School Nights” program, where 20% of the profits from sales are earmarked for the participating school, has become turnkey for everyone involved (if you represent a public or private school, just send them an email).)

zona, Las Vegas, Northern California and possibly a couple more locations here in Orange County where they’ll be met with the support of the locals
SJC Celebrates Its Sister Cities at the Camino Real Playhouse
For the four th consecutive year, Camino Real Playhouse Celebrates San Juan Capistrano's three sister cities (Capestrano, Italy; Goya, Argentina; and Majorca, Spain) with food and wine from each region, along with music, dancing exhibitions and a silent auction

While Capestrano, Italy is SJC's official sister city, many residents don't realize that San Juan has two other sister cities: Goya is home to our swallows for the six months that they are not in SJC and Majorca, Spain is the birthplace of Junipero Serra, the founder of the first nine of our 21 California Missions.
