by Heather Evans veryone is always talking about “how things used to be… ” The days when people knew what service meant, what sacrifice was about and the art and work of chasing a dream. These days, it’s harder to find a business that has survived through the years and still maintains their roots (pun intended).

Reduce Interest Rate Risk In December of 1977, 30 year Treasury bonds were yielding about 8% (yahoo.com finance). By December 1981, rates had risen to about 13.5%.

During that period, bonds that were bought in 1977 fell in price by almost 45%! This is a real world example of the investment fact that bond prices go down as interest rates increase.

Address the “New Rules” of Investing with Adaptive Management There is a New Normal for investors. It is largely centered on global investing, complex instruments, highly refined methodologies and rapid 24 hour trading driven by technology.

Comparatively, the “old” normal approach is far less sophisticated and slow moving.

In general, the old normal was to buy, hold and “just hang on” in severe crashes because “we’ll catch up eventually.” The problem with this strategy can be it may not be suited for the fast-moving, volatile realities of the New Normal. One need only look at the 2000-2010, “lost decade,” with little or no returns for many investors to see the potential issues.

Our clients prefer an Adaptive Portfolio Management approach. An adaptive portfolio blends the best of the old normal with the advanced tools of the New Normal. Recognizing that markets, industries or country economies change, the goal is to shift assets in order to adapt to changes in the environment, whether that be an opportunistic posture or a more neutral or defensive posture, if conditions warrant.

Integrate Tax Efficiency with Investment Goals Taxes are rising. The important question is: What can I do about it? When you understand the law, the value of tax savings over time and how to interrelate these into your invest-

For example, a 2% increase in yield to 4.7% would force an investor to discount their bonds by nearly 50%!!! Bond rates haven’t risen sharply in nearly 30 years so many investors don’t truly understand this relationship, the elevated level of risk potential and the possibly significant impact on prices. Close caution is in order.

I feel that it is essential to analyze your bonds and exposure to interest rate increases. Some things that one might consider are taking a more global bond perspective, decreasing the average maturity of your bonds, or looking into bond alternative investments with less direct exposure to interest rates. Position to Benefit from Inflation Based largely on the printing of money and debt globally, a significant inflationary period looks likely. Bear in mind that higher inflation is almost always accompanied by higher interest rates which was noted above.

Fortunately, there are many things that can be done beyond merely buying gold. For example, there are other commodity related investments which would rise commensurately with inflation like oil related businesses. Another approach would be investments whose income stream with the potential to rise in step with inflation.

The good news is that many inflation correlated assets fell significantly in price over the past 5 to 10 years, particularly after the financial crisis.

Traditional family doctor ideals and a modern approach to health care

here was a time when it was common for a person to see one doctor over the course of their entire life; when it was typical for a doctor to treat all members of the family, from grandpa to mom to junior. He monitored their health, treated their maladies, stitched up their cuts, and helped them in their crises. The doctor was called the family doctor, not just because he had a broad knowledge that made him capable of treating people of every age, but because, in a way, the doctor belonged to the family and the family belonged to the doctor.

Massage for Seniors

by Michelle Bryant Bodywork Improves Quality of Life Almost 35 million Americans are age 65 or older, and about 2,000 more reach this age every day.

As the U.S. demographic shifts to an older population, it's important to find ways of helping our elders maintain their health and vitality. Massage for seniors is gaining importance as an alternative therapy to increase quality of life, and many massage therapists are getting special training to better serve this growing population.

Seniors' Special Needs While similar in technique to other forms of massage, geriatric massage considers the special needs of the elderly. The specialty trained practitioner knows about positioning for greatest comfort and will often have the client rest in the same position for the entire massage.

Mobility challenges may dictate the massage be done in a bed or wheelchair. The therapistmay also work both sides of the body at the same time to enhance body awareness, or only work hands and feet, if the client prefers. Sessions may be limited to 30 to 45 min-

utes, as older clients often do better with shorter, more frequent, massages.

The geriatric massage therapist is aware of health issues associated with aging and how to safely work with this type of client and with associated physicians. Consequently, the practitioner is able to individualize the massage service based on the client's health, mobility, and comfort level.

Benefits of Geriatric Massage A recent study conducted at the Weaver's Tale Retreat Center in Oregon looked at the effects of massage for elderly clients. The results of the two-year study showed that participants experienced a decrease in breathing rate of 50 percent and an improvement in range of motion, posture, body awareness, skin color, and muscle tone. Furthermore, it is well documented that caring touch benefits emotional wellbeing in seniors -- a population at greater risk of suffering from depression.

Dr. Roth's Patient 1. How did you perfect the laser BEFORE AFTER 6 MONTHS treatment for fungal nails?

Ivar Roth, DPM: After performing thousands of laser fungal toenail treatments, I developed and refined a proprietary protocol coupled with the newest second generation FDA approved laser. The new laser with its digital readouts allows me to tell precisely how much energy is required to kill the fungus. With this information, I calculate a specific customized laser treatment tailored to each patient. This patient specific treatment means that no two patients are given the same laser treatment. In addition, I invented a new way to get rid of the fungal infection in the toenails. Before your laser treatment, I will perform Maximum Nail Reduction (MNR) which removes at least 80% f your fungus in a single office visit. This exclusive protocol is so effective that I applied for a patent and it is currently only available at my office. The initial treatment fee includes a second treatment session in order to ensure your success.

Dr. Roth's Patient 2) What is the cost for laser toenail treatment?

IR: The treatments are broken down into two easy to understand components. The first is the examination and nail treatment which may be covered by insurance. The second part is the actual laser treatment which is not covered. A one-time examination fee of $500 is charged during the first session which covers both the fee for the initial examination as well as the follow-up office visit. There is a separate laser fee of $70 for each toe which is also paid upfront and covers two laser treatments. For example, treating one toe would be $570; however if all ten toenails are treated, the charge would be $1200. For severe infections, a third laser treatment may be necessary. Exclusive anti-fungal products are sold separately. You are not forced to treat all your nails as may be mandatory at other offices.
