Books About Cooking That Help Aspiring Young Chefs!

“Cooking with kids is not just about ingredients, recipes, and cooking. It’s about harnessing imagination, empowerment, and creativity.” – Guy Fiery, Chef and Television

Personality

Preschool classrooms are nearly always equipped with miniature kitchens featuring small-scale appliances, pots and pans, and baskets full of plastic food of all sorts. These mini kitchens are universally popular with children, who love to imitate “grown-up” activities and are entirely familiar with food-preparation and serving rituals. We love them in schools, because while children are engaged in imaginative play, pretending to cook and serve, they are

learning new vocabulary, discerning shapes and colors, perhaps counting and measuring for the first time.

It is not always practical or safe for children to help with meal preparation in real kitchens, but it is certainly worth the effort to involve them whenever possible. Even the youngest children can rinse vegetables, tear lettuce, stir a solution, or add ingredients to a mixture. Once children can read, even modestly, they can contribute to meal preparation by reciting the ingredients in a recipe -- perhaps encountering abbreviations and fractions for the first time. Following a recipe from start to finish bolsters planning skills. Making a shopping list is an un-intimidating and purposeful way to practice writing. All contributions to meal preparation foster healthy relationships with food and engender justifiable pride.

Many children also love to listen to or read stories about food preparation -or food, in general. For all the “foodies” in your families, we have curated a list of books they might enjoy. A personal favorite of mine is Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, which I have read aloud in many Stratford School classrooms. I always close the reading by asking the little ones what food they would most like to see rain from the sky and am always charmed by their answers, which range from the predictable to the truly exotic –from French fries to pheasant gumbo!

PRESCHOOL

How to Make An Apple

Pie and See the World by Marjorie Priceman

What do you do when you want to make an apple pie but the local food market is closed? Why not take a trip around the world in search of all the

necessary ingredients? This quirky story is a great way to talk to children about where our food actually comes from, challenging them to think beyond the grocery store. I love that the book incorporates geography, too! There’s also a great recipe for apple pie included in the book. If you like this book, try the sequel, How to Make a Cherry Pie and See the USA!

Dragons Love Tacos by Adam Rubin, Illustrated by Daniel Salmieri

Dragons love tacos, but they don’t like spicy salsa--it gives them “tummy troubles.” At his dragon taco party, a boy inadvertently serves up mildly spicy salsa and his guests (dragons) accidentally burn his house down. This light-hearted, slightly absurd dragon story makes you want to read it aloud to a bunch of children making up all sorts of weird voices for each character. If you love tacos too, this book is most definitely for you. There is a sequel and of course, a toy dragon clutching a taco.

KINDERGARTEN

Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Suess

There are only fifty different words in this 1970 Dr. Suess silly classic about learning to try a new food. Dr. Suess was one of the first authors to create books that not only can be read by young students due to their limited word count, but also contained an important life lesson for the reader. Should we automatically hate all weird foods? And one step further for discussion while reading this classic; should we judge something (or someone) on their appearance?

Pancakes for Breakfast by Tomie

An absolute gem from the author/ artist of Strega Nona. The illustrations are so well done that words aren’t needed. The story follows an older woman who wakes up wanting to cook pancakes for herself and her pets. She grabs a recipe book but then realizes that she has no eggs. She walks out to her chicken coop and gets eggs. Next comes the milk; same problem, and similar solution.

As all of the ingredients are gathered, the cows milked and the butter churned, there are many clues about what is happening in the story. The conversation with your reader can be about the true origin of the ingredients of our foods: farms, not grocery stores or pantry shelves. Will she make her pancakes? Turn the pages and see! Afterward, use the simple pancake recipe included to make your own.

GRADES ONE TO TWO

Yasmin the Chef (Series) by Saadia Faruqi

Yasmin is planning a party for her friends, but doesn’t like the spicy food her Pakistani family serves. Yasmin puts on her chef hat and plans to make her own amazing, fantastic recipe...as soon as she figures out what that is! This amazing eighteen book series has the main character trying out all sorts of challenges, such as being a singer, a soccer player, a writer, and even a librarian.

GRADES THREE TO FIVE

Minette’s Feast:

The Delicious Story of Julia Child and Her Cat by Susanna Reich, Illustrated by Amy June Bates

This charming biography follows the story of Minette Mimosa McWilliams Child, a very fortunate Parisian feline who comes to live with renowned chef Julia Child and her husband. Minette will delight young children with the way she pounces, jumps, and rolls around the Child’s home, and with the way she waits patiently as Julia cooks special meals. Julia knows she has a great recipe if Minette loves it! All of the quotes in the story are drawn from Julia Child’s writing and correspondence. The book also describes the markets, cooking smells, and ambience of Paris so well that it is easy to see how Julia Child was inspired to write Mastering the Art of French Cooking

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs by Judi Barrett, Illustrated by Ron Barrett

This classic story starts with a young boy and girl eating pancakes with

their grandparents. As one of the flapjacks flies through the air, grandpa is reminded of a tall tale about Chewandswallow, a town where soup rained from the sky, the snow was made of mashed potatoes, and the wind blew in storms of hamburgers. All the townspeople were happy, and well fed, but then, the town had pancake storms, covering the school so no one could get in. Tomato tornadoes occurred, along with other food-related natural disasters, including giant meatball hail, ruining houses. How do the townspeople survive? Read this very silly, wonderfully illustrated picture book and find out.

MIDDLE SCHOOL

The Candymakers by Wendy Mass

It’s time for the annual candy making competition! At the “Life is Sweet” candy factory, things are definitely much more exciting. Four 12-yearolds with their own stories to tell: Logan; the Candymaker’s son, Daisy; a girl with a huge secret, Miles; an innocent thoughtful boy with a hidden past, and Phillip; a young contestant seeking revenge. This book has a few sweet lessons on friendship, honesty, and being courageous enough to be yourself, mixed in with lots of candy! If you like this one, read the sequel, The Candymakers and the Great Chocolate Chase

So if your child loves to cook and baking is a favorite weekend activity, then they may discover that they have something in common with the characters in these stories. Each book in our collection is filled with cooking adventures, and some even include recipes for you and your children to try! So what are you waiting for? Let’s get cooking!

THE VALUE OF A CPA FINANCIAL ADVISOR

Some things in life are better when combined with other things. Peanut butter is great, but better with jelly. S’mores are wonderful, but somehow tastier when eaten next to a campfire. Mobile phones are indispensable, but incrementally improve with every added app. This idea holds true with financial advice as well. CPAs and financial advisors are important and valuable resources in their own respects toward ensuring a sound financial future, but they’re even better when they’re both the same person.

The reason for this is simple; sound investment advice must be done with consideration of tax implications, as the cost of not doing so can be significant. Likewise, good tax planning often involves taking advantage of investment opportunities that become evident during the tax preparation process. A CPA Financial Advisor can help ensure that these interdependent objectives are executed on successfully.

According to a study involving 42,000 advisors by Envestnet, a leading investment platform provider, the “value added” of using a financial advisor is roughly 2% per year. The added value of a CPA/tax management is another 1% per year. The study breaks down the added value coming from 5 core areas:

The following highlights more tangibly describe how the value of a CPA financial advisor can enhance your financial plan.

Tax Savings = Enhanced Investment Returns

When considering the financial plan for one’s entire life, one should make tax savings as much of a priority as the selection of investment and retirement products. Tax savings simply can have too tremendous a positive impact on maximizing your retirement nest egg to ignore. And its importance and value generally increases proportionally with your marginal tax rate. This is especially true today, given the generally rich valuations and low yields of most traditional investment options.

Tax Management = Tax Savings

As the value of your taxable investments grow, so does the importance of utilizing tax management to minimize taxes. Whereas many financial advisors may list these offerings, you can count on the CPA financial advisor to ensure that tax management is being performed.

High Frequency of Interaction = Better Financial Maintenance

Another important ingredient to a sound financial plan is maintenance. Financial plans are snapshots in time that require periodic updates. Long-term impacts of near-term events such as career, family and preference changes need to be incorporated into the plan when they occur. So, frequency of interaction is paramount to good maintenance. And here again, the tax professional is, unfortunately like taxes, with you year in and year out. Hence, maintenance of a financial plan by a CPA financial advisor is a natural fit.

DOHENY BIKE

The Fastest Growing E-Bike Company in Dana Point

You might be surprised to learn what the country’s fastest growing industry is and it’s not RV sales, in spite of a year of lockdown. But the demand to get on the road is certainly fueling the drive toward recreational activities in North America, and e-bikes are running away with the market.

Fueled by demand from both Canada and the U.S., e-bikes are looking at an annual growth rate of close to 11% over the next few years, marching right along with a booming housing market and burgeoning infrastructure development. Targeting not only recent retirees, but enthusiasts of all ages looking to stay

active, get outside or simply prefer to tool around town on an E-bike - the evolved and infinitely more exciting electric iteration of the traditional two-wheeler.

While E-bike purveyors are seemingly on every corner, few have experienced the explosion in interest and growth locally like Doheny Bike - the fastest growing E-bike company in Dana Point.

This is perhaps due in large measure to the popularity, versatility,

utility and affordability of the company’s Fold N’ Go collection - available in a array of colors and profiles. But undoubtedly in equal measure is the mission of its co-owners - Jason Spates and Micah Meiring - to “give back to the community.”

Doheny itself boasts a robust outdoor history. Killer Dana, the aptly named freight-train-thick swell brought in surfers and developers alike. Hoping to keep the community close to the land and sea that brought it prosperity originally seemed logical for Jason, Micah and their team, working with the City of Dana Point recently to hand out 75 complimentary helmets, scooters, and skateboards. “Dana Point is an amazing community, and we want to help more kids enjoy it safely.

Doheny Bike is donating a Doheny EZ Folding bike to Pet Project’s biggest fundraiser of the year on September 19th called Pet Project Foundation: Roaring for Rescues! Proceeds will benefit the animals at the San Clemente-Dana Point Animal Shelter.

“We recognized the opportunity to give back, to contribute to our community that shaped our childhood, and it felt natural to encourage mobility and personal freedom when the pandemic had taken so much of it away.” Jason and Micah are a couple of local Dana Point dads, lucky enough to have lived near the worldfamous Doheny Beach surf spot their entire lives. “Our freedom was nearly unlimited as kids in the 1970’s and 80’s - we wanted our own kids to be as mobile as we were.”

The idea of access and freedom have long been associated with the bicycle, and Doheny Bike believes in

“It should be fun, but we’re also thinking beyond fun to community, individual expression and the ability to remain mobile.”

sending its patrons out on adventures to places unknown, where they might not have ventured before. They set out to provide an affordable solution for everyday mobility.

“With the average buyer’s budget in mind, we wanted a functional riding experience that is not trendy, awkward and limited to your hometown,” says Micah. “Creating the agility of the Fold N’ Go anywhere design, we have provided a solution to buyers that want to travel in a smaller car with electric bikes and ultimately extend their outdoor adventures.”

As parents, Jason and Micah stress the importance of safety, and encourage all riders to be over 16, along with the importance of sizing the bike

out, wearing a helmet, and meeting minimum requirements to ride the bikes safely on the road.

“It should be fun, but we’re also thinking beyond fun, to community, individual expression, and the ability to remain mobile.” On a single charge, you can ride up to 50 miles. Put a basket on the back and you’re ready for the store or farmer’s market. “I wanted something better than traffic in my car and I just knew that the options I had to help my community needed to be affordable and reliable.”

With a background in commercial truck leasing and loans, and an early pandemic ride on his nephew’s electric scooter, genius was born. “There’s something about being out in the fresh air that made a great start to the day.” The recent cycling boom couldn’t agree more.

Jonathan Bayani - GEICO Laguna Niguel

Did you know that 15 minutes could save you 15% or more on your car insurance?

There are very few things that throw people off balance more easily than an accident. Be it at home, in the car, or on the water, an accident can ruin a day, a week, or even a year for the uninsured. For the last 85 years, your safety and that of your family has been GEICO’s ultimate priority, and for Agency Owner Jonathan Bayani and his team of licensed agents at the GEICO local office in Laguna Niguel, carrying that mission on is about much more than offering competitive rates.

Bayani and his team strive to serve South OC residents with elite and tailored customer service curated over the last twenty years in the auto and insurance industries. Customers can purchase car insurance, as well as coverage for renters, condos, RV’s, boats, and commercial vehicles. Identity pro-

tection, jewelry, and homeowners are also among the list of offerings GEICO boasts: a far cry from the original single policy auto coverage GEICO founders Leo and Lillian Goodwin offered clients in 1936 when they first opened their doors.

“As the father of three children, looking after the wellbeing of my family is top priority,’ says Bayani. “Insurance is integral to every industry and after serving the San Diego Padres and seeing how closely knit the players and their families are to their individual coverage, I wanted to bring what I learned to everyday folks in my own community.”

A bilingual team of agents, the office in Laguna Niguel will look to bring savings to each client that walks through their doors. “We have spe-

cial association and alumni discounts for graduates of UCLA, SDSU, UCI, CUSF, CSULB, USC and other local schools.” Active duty military serving at Camp Pendleton may also qualify for GEICO’s military discount.

Accidents or incidents can derail even the best laid plans, but they don’t have to. GEICO has been proving that for 85 years, and Jonathan and his team are here to back you up for those to come.

DONAVON FRANKENREITER

For nearly four decades Donavon Frankenreiter has been travelling the globe, first as a professional surfer and now as a musician. Born in Southern California, Donavon spent most of his youth chasing waves, turning pro at the age of 16.

These days instead of surf competitions, it’s concert halls that brings Frankenreiter to town, where he entertains audiences with his unique blend of laid-back grooves, philosophical lyrics and soulful delivery.

You can find him touring the world with his three-piece band and still catching waves anytime he can.

Can We Skip to the Good Part?

City Cruises by Hornblower

If the last couple of years have taught us anything, its that the perfect time to take that trip or book a special evening out is now. And while there are so many activities one might choose to celebrate a special occasion, there are arguably few that offer a more memorable experience than a leisurely dinner cruise aboard a magnificent luxury yacht. Particularly one defined by the spectacular views of Newport Harbor, gourmet cuisine, dancing and strolling about the multi-deck craft.

A dinner cruise aboard a City Cruises by Hornblower yacht is unforgettable way to celebrate an anniversary, date night alternative or a milestone birthday. You can even book a private charter for a wedding, rehearsal dinner, reception or corporate event.

Indulge in a delicious buffet crafted from local, seasonal ingredients (think fresh seafood, salad and entrees like oven-roasted chicken breast, coriander crusted salmon and braised beef short ribs) aboard the ship as you glide by playful sealions, towering yachts and sprawling mansions that line the bay. It’s particularly beautiful this time of year as many of the waterfront homes are decorated with festive lights and holiday displays. Musical entertainment, excellent service, sparkling coastal ocean views, and a ribbon of stars above will enchant any guest. After all, it’s never too late to plan ahead.

BRONWYN GORMAN | Decorating Den Interiors

Over a half-century ago, a former fabric salesman named Steve Bursten had a vision: an unparalleled interior design catalogue that would match creatives to homes across the US and Canada.

Originally known as American Drapery Consultants, Steve took his dream to the streets, and within a single year, the first franchise was born. Today, with designers scattered across the states and our neighbor to the north, Decorating Den Interiors (DDI) can tackle a single room or build an entirely new home with you. To your style, with your specifications, using the best product possible.

An expert in her field, Interior Designer Bronwyn Gorman is more than a creative mind at DDI. Bringing a

treasure trove of style to the table and a pocketful of tricks and tips to build out the most “you” space possible, her methodologies are deliberate and dedicated. “I truly believe that a home should reflect the people who live in it, not the person who designed it.”

A longtime Orange County resident, Bronwyn embraces the unique lifestyle of its population, and the indoor-outdoor spaces that reflect it. Where else can you hit the waves and the ski hill in the same day?

“A house isn’t just a home, it is your refuge, your sanctuary at the end of the day, and responsible for ushering you into each new one," she says. "I want to promote health and happiness with my designs - from the ease of process to the details in your favorite room.”

Bronwyn's business, a reflection of her personal values and ideals, takes the leap from outstanding customer service into genuine respect and care for her clients. “I’m passionate and motivated to understand each individual I have the pleasure of working

with." And it shows in her projects. From bedding to window treatments, furniture to light fixtures, no detail is too small. Once a budget is reached and agreed upon, a final consultation and presentation come to life, and the design of your dreams begins to take shape. Bronwyn’s design services couldn’t be more thorough or more convenient. Because she comes to you, she is able to see the lighting and get a feel for the flow/how things work in your home.

“Feeling like you’re understood and falling in love with your space each time you walk through the door don’t have to be mutually exclusive," says Bronwyn. "It's in our attention to detail and customization that we can truly make a difference, as we can offer options and resources to create a room like no other, one that is uniquely you."

South Coast Shutter and Shades

Operating honestly and with integrity has served as the foundation for the continued success of the Laguna Niguel-based South Coast Shutter and Shades for over 32 years. Owners Tom and Donna Schuster launched their own company after realizing that “on our own we would be able to offer quality products in an honest environment to our customers, as well as servicing the products we sell.”

Specializing in custom shutters, blinds (mini, faux, wood, vertical), cellular shades, woven woods, plantation and security shutters and everything in between, Tom and Donna offer free in-home consultations for design as well as measuring, they always include free professional installation and prefer to bring all of the samples to each client’s home to go over the assorted styles and many color options to suit each home’s interior and its homeowner’s unique lifestyle.

“We listen to you and then incorporate your ideas with ours to design your custom shutters, blinds or shades,” says Tom. “Our portfolios and samples are very extensive, so you will be able to envision how your windows are going to look when complete."

Tom and Donna, credit their success to date to the quality of customer service they and their team give their customers, which in turn creates a wonderful repeat and referral business. “Although there may be providers of similar products, there is no one that can match our superior customer service – from showing up on time, making precise measurements and flawless installations - and with a professional ‘can do’ attitude,” says Donna.

Tom adds that “our pricing with unbeatable discounts, sales support and the fact that we offer our customers an in-house design team at no additional charge is the first step in setting us apart from our competition. I am proud to say that we have built a reputation in the business for having the highest quality, best beauty, fit and finish and value available. All of our products come with a lifetime warranty.”

A 5-Star Yelp rated company, South Coast Shutter and Shades boasts scores of glowing testimonials online, including Debora R of Laguna Niguel who writes "Donna and Tom are amazing! Great products, great prices, great service.I've used them twice for two different businesses and I could not be happier. Donna makes suggestions based on what I tell her

my needs are and she has been spot on with her recommendations. Installations by Tom are quick and easy. Highly recommended!"

Another reviewer, Doug W. of Mission Viejo posted that "From the first call, I knew I was dealing with a reputable, experienced, HONEST company. Donna and Tom are absolute PROS and obviously take pride in their work … Their price was very competitive. Also, what they quote is what you pay - keep that in mind when talking to the "other guys" whose price seems to go up and up. All appointments including install were FAST. The installation was flawless. I had a question later that evening about my motorized shades and they called me back IMMEDIATELY. My impression is that I could call them 5 or 10 years from now and they would just as helpful."

Melanoma: The Silent but Deadly Skin Cancer

--- Prioritize Your Skin Exam with Your Dermatologist ---

You eat well, get lots of exercise and try to obtain at least eight hours of sleep a night — you’re doing everything right to maintain a healthy lifestyle. But when was the last time you had a skin exam?

The skin is the largest organ in the body and plays an extremely important role in our overall health and well-being. It serves as a barrier that protects the body from external stimuli, trauma and dangerous substances, it helps regulate the body’s temperature and is integral in balancing the body’s water. The skin is a warrior fighting on the outside to protect our insides — and it can also provide helpful clues about other issues the body may be experiencing, like stress or inflammation. For all these reasons, it is very important to take care of your skin — and not just the skin on your face! Regularly looking at the health of your skin and

proactively monitoring for changes or abnormalities is a smart way to help ensure you’re identifying anything suspicious that may indicate a larger health concern.

One of the most serious skin conditions that is often overlooked is melanoma. Melanoma is a type of skin cancer that starts in melanocytes, the cells that produce melanin. Melanin is the pigment that gives skin its color. Melanoma can occur anywhere on the skin surface from the scalp to the soles of the feet. It occurs in areas that are easily seen on self-examination but can also occur in areas that are impossible to see without the help of a partner.

Melanoma, when identified early, has a 99 percent survival rate.[1] This number drops to 27[KG1] percent if it spreads to other parts of the body.1 It is considered the deadliest form of

skin cancer, and unfortunately, numbers are increasing worldwide.[2]

While the exact cause of melanoma is still unknown, several risk factors have been identified — notably, exposure to UV rays, either via sunlight or tanning beds. Other risk factors may include family history, genetics and skin type.2Although people with any skin color can develop melanoma, individuals with lighter skin tones, red hair or those who’ve had several severe sunburns in their lifetime may be at increased risk. Additionally, people who have a large number of moles on their body and/ or those who have a family history of skin cancer may also be more likely to develop melanoma.[3]

Most of us wear sunscreen on our face, neck and arms when we know we’ll be in the sun for extended periods of time. But I’ve found melano-

ma in areas that have never seen the sun (think: below the belt), and these are often places overlooked by most people. While some of these “hiding places” are common for melanoma, these are often areas of the body that can be very difficult to catch during a self-exam. When I was in medical school, my institution embarked on an educational campaign to inform beauty school students about skin cancer and what to look for. Often, melanomas or other skin cancers hide on your scalp or behind your ears — areas most people don’t think to apply sunscreen to or to check for abnormal spots or moles.

If you’ve identified an area of the skin that looks suspicious, your doctor may recommend a surgical biopsy. This is the standard method for detecting melanoma and involves the removal of part of the lesion for testing. Unfortunately, biopsies require local anesthesia, which means an injection. Many people find these injections uncomfortable, and the biopsy itself may sometimes lead to a wound and, potentially, a permanent scar. In a study from 2018, over 90% percent of biopsies to diagnose melanoma actually tested negative for melanoma![4] While it’s smart to be thorough, that’s a lot of cutting.

Fortunately, there’s an innovative, non-invasive tool for detecting melanoma that is currently available by a California-based company — DermTech. The DermTech test uses a clear sticker to collect skin tissue samples. This “Smart Sticker™” painlessly and non-invasively removes the most superficial layers of skin to obtain genomic material. This genomic material is tested by DermTech to look for

biomarkers correlated with melanoma, which help your doctor diagnose your lesion. The Smart Sticker is able to pull cells from the whole lesion by painlessly lifting away the outermost layer of cells from the surface. For context, a biopsy, which takes a small portion of the lesion, typically evaluates approximately 1-2 percent of a lesion.[5]

The DermTech test helps to determine which skin lesions have the biomarkers correlated with a pathologic diagnosis of melanoma. If the test is negative, a biopsy isn’t required, but you and your doctor should continue to monitor for any changes. If the test is positive, your doctor will perform a biopsy to establish the diagnosis.

The DermTech test is a new, effective option for detecting genomic markers to help clinicians assess melanoma with genomic precision — but maintaining healthy skin starts with you. You can’t test an abnormal lesion on your body if you don’t know it’s there! I typically recommend an annual skin exam for most people. If an individual has undergone previous biopsies, has a family history of melanoma, or has other risk factors associated with skin cancer, a doctor may recommend more frequent visits.

Melanoma can have devastating consequences if not caught early. This Melanoma Awareness Month, make it a priority to see a doctor, encourage your friends and family to stay current on their skin exams, protect your skin from the sun by wearing sunscreen and other protective gear when outdoors, and avoid direct sunlight during midday hours.

Subject of the Month: Medicare Part B Costs Increase in 2022

You pay a premium each month for Part B. Your Part B premium will be automatically deducted from your social security check and if you aren’t taking social security yet then you’ll get a bill from the government. The Standard premium for Medicare in 2021 was $148.50. In 2022 it will increase to $170.10. This is an increase of $21.60, the biggest increase ever in dollar terms, although not percentage wise.

The Medicare Part B deductible also increased; from $203 in 2021 to $233 in 2022.

If your modified adjusted gross income is above a certain amount, you may pay an Income Related Adjustment Amount (IRMAA). Medicare uses the modified adjusted gross income reported on your IRS tax return from 2 years ago. The IRS provides this to Social Security. Notices for your IRMAA amounts have begun to arrive in the mail for 2022, so keep an eye out for that to avoid any surprises.

There are 5 higher income brackets that cause a person to pay more for their Medicare Part B. In 2022 IRMAA will be assessed when an individual’s MAGI is above $91,000 and a married couple’s MAGI is above $182,000.

Delta 8 gummies will bring on a mellow cerebral experience and a relaxed physical sensation, complete with a mouthwatering taste and texture. Delta 8 is the calmer brother of THC and will have you feeling right without the anxiety of traditional THC. Derived directly from hemp CBD, these products are legal in California.

Medicare Part B Cost Increase in 2022

Since 2007, a Medicare beneficiary’s Part B monthly premium is based on his or her income. The income-related monthly adjustment amounts affect roughly 7 % of people with Medicare Part B. However, in Orange County with the cost of living being what it is, one would imagine that percentage is MUCH higher.

Ihave had to be the bearer of bad news to at least 50% of my new clients that they will pay more for Medicare Part B (an additional IRMAA assessment also gets added to the Part D coverage as well).

If your modified adjusted gross income is above a certain amount, you will pay an “Income Related Monthly Adjustment Amount” aka “IRMAA”. Medicare uses the modified adjusted gross income reported on your tax return from 2 years ago. The IRS provides this amount to Social Security.

There are 5 income brackets that cause a person to pay more for their Medicare Part B.

The Standard premium for Medicare in 2021 was $148.50. In 2022 it will increase to $170.10 The Medicare Part

B deductible also increased; from $203 in 2021 to $233 in 2022.

(This is the biggest jump in premium and deductible that I have ever witnessed, most likely in correlation to the COLA increase of 5.9% to Social Security benefits in 2022)

A bit of good news for those in the higher income brackets. Medicare raised the bar on what amount of income you can make before you start paying more for Medicare Part B, as well as how much you can make before going into a higher IRMAA bracket.

In 2021 it was $88,000 for an individual and $176,000 for a married couple. In 2022 it will change to $91,000 for an individual and $182,000 for a married couple.

If, as an individual you make above $91,000 up to $114,000 or as a married couple above $182,000 up to $228,000 you’ll pay $238.10 a month for Part B.

If, as an individual you make above $114,000 up to $142,000 or as a married couple above $228,000 up to $284,000 you’ll pay $340.20 a month for Part B.

If, as an individual you make above $142,000 up to $170,000 or as a married couple above $284,000 up to $340,000 you’ll pay $442.30 a month for Part B.

If, as an individual you make above $170,000 and less than $500,000 or as a married couple above $340,000 and less than $750,000 you’ll pay $544.30 a month for Part B.

The “good news” is once you make $500,000 as an individual or $750,000 as a married couple; you can make any amount higher than that but still pay the same Part B premium. That monthly amount is $578.30.

These are large increases in what you pay compared to last year, I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
