YEAR-END TAX PLANNING OPPORTUNITIES & STRATEGIES By Peter D. Prescott CPA, Masters in Taxation

INDIVIDUALS: 1. Consider a Roth-IRA conversion to take advantage of low market v a l u a t i o n s a n d t o re c a p t u re growth as a potentially tax-free distribution. 2. C o n s i d e r n o n - t a x a b l e g i f t s ($17,000 per person in 2023 and $18,000 in 2024). 3. For individuals aged 70.5 years or older, make your charitable gifts out of your pre-tax IRA accounts to reduce taxation on IRA distributions (called a Qualified Charitable Distribution or QCD). This is especially important if you are claiming the Standard Deduction and not benefiting from itemizing charitable deductions on your tax return. A reduction of your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) can potentially lower the taxation on your social security benefits and reduce the cost of your Medicare premiums. 4. Surviving Spouses whose spouse passed away within the last five (5) years should review if a Form 706, Estate Tax Return, should be filed to claim the deceased spouses’ unused estate tax exemption (DSUE). The return must file a Portability Election to carry over the unused exemption. This is extremely important since the current high estate tax exemption of $12,920,000 in 2023 is currently scheduled to be reduced back to $5 million plus inflation adjustment on January 2026. 5. Meet with us to take advantage of estate planning concepts to take advantage of the existing estate tax exemptions. This is critical to avoid loss of approximately $6.4 million per person in estate tax exemption. 8

6. For Worthless or Abandoned Partnership Interests, taxpayers need to take affirmative steps to terminate their ownership interest so they can claim a taxable capital loss on their tax returns. 7. Based upon the draft bills for a new CA payroll tax if you don’t have adequate long-term care coverage, wage earners would have a new payroll tax. Call us to review if purchasing a policy now for LTC makes sense for you and your family (which might prevent the imposition of the tax on your wages). Great action item if you were considering LTC coverage in the future.

BUSINESSES: 1. For Sole Proprietors, consider forming an S Corporation for legal liability protection and to minimize the Social Security and Medicare taxes paid. This is especially important now that the Social Security Wage Base has been increased to $168,600 for Tax Year 2024 and that the 0.9% State Disability Insurance (SDI Rate) will be charged on 100% of your gross wages. 2. For S Corporations, LLCs, and Partnerships, take advantage of the new Pass-Through Elective

Tax (PTE) payments which allow the business to pay the California personal income tax on the income generated by the S Corp/ LLC/Partnership. By having the business pay your personal income tax for the shareholder, the shareholder receives tax savings of at your marginal tax bracket times the amount of tax paid. This can be as high as 37% on the amount of CA tax paid on behalf of the shareholder. 3. Review your retirement plan to determine which plan is the best option based upon your tax bracket, how much you want to contribute and how much you have to contribute for others. The most relevant plans for your consideration are 401(K), Defined Benefit and Simple-IRA plans. Based upon recent contribution limits which have increased due to inflation adjustments, a Single 401(K)Profit Sharing participant who is age 50 can contribute as much as $73,500 for Tax Year 2023 and $76,600 for 2024.

ECS Celebrates 100 Years of Legacy at The Covington By Cash Benton, Executive Director

On October 6, 2023, The Covington in Aliso Viejo celebrated 100 years of delivering on its parent company’s mission to provide exceptional communities and services to seniors in Southern California.

T

he celebration took attendees through exhibits showcasing three chapters of the Episcopal Communities & Services (ECS) legacy, starting with its origins, then its progress over the past century, and culminating with an exciting look toward the future. The origins of ECS were told through a video interview of Bishop John H. Taylor, VII Bishop of the Episcopal Di-

ocese of Los Angeles. As he richly relayed the beginnings of the organization, eight-foot panels displayed the story of Deaconess Sophie Miller, who believed that aged people throughout the diocese, particularly the widows of clergy, should be provided for in their retirement years. By collecting donations on dime cards and enlisting the support of Bishop Horsfall Johnson, she was able to raise funds to build The Episcopal Home for the

Aged in Alhambra, which welcomed its first residents in 1923. As attendees continued through the exhibit, they learned how this Home evolved into today’s organization, which owns and operates five premier senior living communities in Southern California. In the second room, the displays celebrated the company’s progress. Prior CEO, Martha Tamburrano, described

L-R Residents Karen Mauro, William Wallace, and Athena Jolly, with ECS Reverend Michael S. Bell and resident Elaine Ockner, who entertained guests on the piano. 12

L-R AV City Councilmember Ross Chun with Tracy Stebick and Sergio Merola of The Covington via video the holistic approach ECS has taken to become a leader in premier senior living in Southern California. “Wherever we operate, we provide good jobs for the community. These are jobs that have good benefits and good pay. They are jobs one can be proud to have.” She continued, “I’m personally proud of a lot about the ECS legacy, but what I most enjoy sharing is that the company operates within a value system based on lifelong learning, care that comes to you, and providing exceptional communities and services to seniors from all backgrounds, cultures and faiths. Those values have been in place since day one. The fact that the company has continued to expand the mission and grow the organization while maintaining the same original founding values is uniquely satisfying and especially remarkable.” CEO James Rothrock shared ECS’s vision. Future initiatives include for The Covington an upgraded entrance, expanded dining, and refreshed shared spaces; while the company’s Affordable Housing Plan supports Bishop Taylor’s initiative to build 30 additional communities throughout the diocese.

More than 100 people attended the afternoon event, including Aliso Viejo City Councilmember, Ross Chun. Additional attendees included The Reverend Michael S. Bell - ECS Director of Housing and Development, current and future residents, Board Members, leadership, team members, and The Covington’s business partners. “It was a wonderful afternoon,” said Rothrock. “I am thrilled that we had this opportunity to enjoy such a worthy tribute to the numerous lives touched by the Mission and Values

of our organization over the past 100 years.” Special appreciation to Morrison Living who generously donated the food and beverage. We thank all who attended and look forward to more milestones to celebrate in the future. The Covington is a premier, gated retirement community on 12 leafy acres in the heart of South Orange County’s, Aliso Viejo. To learn more please visit thecovington.org or call (949) 209-3829. 13

Making Home Health Personal with Home Instead South OC By Jody Robinson

One of my favorite movies is Nora Ephron’s You’ve Got Mail. Not only because Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks might be the most lovable duo to ever grace a movie screen, but because it was a script and a story that made heart sense. The characters cared.

O

ne of the best exchanges in the film happens roughly three-quarters of the way through, as Kathleen Kelly and Joe Fox are chatting. (Spoiler alert: this movie came out in 1998, so I don’t feel bad saying the independent bookstore folded.) Joe notes that it wasn’t personal - his superstore taking over the neighborhood- and Kathleen retorts smartly: “All that means is that it wasn’t personal to you. But it was personal to me. (...) Whatever else anything is, it ought to begin by being personal.” I’m not certain that America’s romcom king and queen had anything to do with the beginnings of San Juan Capistrano’s newest franchise of Home Instead, but I can tell you with one-hundred percent certainty that it began by being personal. Jim and Candice Kordenbrock moved to sunny Southern California more than 20 years ago for a short-term assignment, and never went home again. Planting roots in San Clemente was a no-brainer after surviving repeated winters in Upstate New York. Their kids spread out among Our Lady of Fatima Catholic School and San Clemente High, and Jim and 14

Candice got to work: emerging from an esteemed military career into the world of marketing, advertising, and executive management. As a Captain in the United States Army, Jim is no stranger to taking a leadership role - and the couple overflow with qualities like integrity and compassion. Qualities which lend themselves well to a trajectory into home health care.

trust of healthcare practitioners, but instead, through all of it, Jim “experienced the compassion, love, care, and commitment from caregivers who knew what to say, how to say it, and when to say it: even if (we) didn’t want to hear it.” Home Instead has a proprietary approach to the care they offer, which creates a trusted, compassionate, high-quality in-home elder care experience. The realities of aging aren’t always glamorous. Many fall out of touch with even the closest family members, or can’t keep up with social activities in the same way they once could. The common activities of daily living can be grueling, but caretakers who step in and build a lasting relationship with family and elderly alike retain dignity for those they care for. Cared for means that elderly remain active, which makes a difference in creating opportunities for them to help themselves, creating resilience, independence, and confidence. If managing pain or a chronic health condition has become a burden on the family, it can be draining for everyone involved. The relief an on-site caretaker brings ensures the burden is lifted, all while ensuring person-centered care “is tailored to the individual’s needs.” After all - it might be business, but it begins and ends with being personal.

Becoming the owner and president of Southern California’s Home Instead wasn’t a mistake: Jim’s desire to build a business alongside the world’s most respected and leading provider of inhome care services for seniors came from professional career learnings and personal experiences caring for loved ones. “My father battled Alzheimer’s disease for years until he died at the age of 92,” says Jim. “I saw the impact, stress, and sadness that it caused my mother, my family, our friends. My mother passed away exactly one year and two months after a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer.” One might be tempted to walk away from such an experience with a mis-

Sleep Better! Live Better!

with Sleepm

When I was a new mom running on less than 2 consecutive hours of sleep at a time, I would have cut my arm off for any single item that promised me deep restful rejuvenation.

A

t points, I was so tired that like my newborn, I became wired, unable to relax when I did actually have down time. As they say, “sleep when the baby is sleeping.” Unfortunately, postpartum insomnia is a real thing.

Now that my kids are teenagers, you'd think I'd be better rested. But as we age, the laundry list of reasons we might not sleep well just gets longer and longer. Poor circulation, body aches, stress: each of those have found their way to the top of my personal list at some point or another. So what is the secret sauce to finding a solid night of sleep? Turns out, Sleepm had it all along. Sleepm products contain the latest materials

advances and natural elements: crystals paired with scientific technology to improve your quality of life. From dalmatian jasper to heliotrope, heating pads to mattress toppers, Sleepm has invested in a big way in the science behind their line of luxury, organic, handcrafted products designed to help you sleep better and live better. When you aren't getting the rest you need, you’re in pain, or are under stress, your body actually changes. Heart rate increases, blood pressure can go through the roof. Your muscles tighten. Sleepm’s biocrystal mixtures work together in a process called biofeedback: in which slight changes in your body to reduce tension or relax muscles increases blood flow

and decreases your heart rate, which inherently makes you feel better. The best part is that there’s no surgery or expensive medication involved. After 12 years of research and development, Sleepm's founders launched its line of mattresses, pillows, mattress toppers and even eye masks featuring biocrystal mixtures - the latest technology from natural sources. These biocrystals have been scientifically proven to aid in the quality of sleep through relaxation, blood circulation and improved cellular activity. Designed and made using the highest quality materials in the US and Canada, the biocrystal orthopedic mattresses are crafted with Thai natural latex (hypoallergenic, anti-microbial, mildew proof, and dust mite resistant) and activated carbon to absorb odors and polluted air particles. The classic mattress topper combines the above with Viscoelastic - cool gel memory foam designed by NASA in the 1970s - to support and relieve pressure points while Sleepm's biocrystal pillows are uniquely shaped to support your cervical vertebrae. More than just a mattress company, Sleepm has partnered with the World Organization of Natural Medicine in its mission of "sleep health" and the true benefits of whole-body health through an alternate perspective: and sleep remains consistently at the top of the list. Healing Hearts EMERGENCY ANIMAL HOSPITAL

By Jody Robinson

In writing this editorial, I recalled a friend once asking me to explain the premise of a book called “All Creatures Great and Small.”

I

t’s about giving veterinary care to animals like you’d give pediatric care to children in your community - with grace, and love, and an incredible amount of passion. James Herriot’s example was set long ago

through the tales of extraordinary and ordinary circumstance, but the level of service, specialization, and care lives on in clinics like Healing Hearts Emergency Animal Hospital in Laguna Hills. Since opening its doors last August, the team of compassionate professionals here have provided the highest level of emergency medicine to dogs, cats, avian patients and even most exotics. Dr. Berschauer, the CEO and founding veterinarian behind Healing Hearts, strives to put together the best option for treatment for each patient on an individual level. “We do this by working with each pet owner to determine what the optimal plan looks like for the care of your beloved pet,” says Stephanie Yun, office

Dr. Berschauer

manager. “With a fully equipped ICU, advanced monitoring systems, oxygen cage, full in-house lab, we’re ready to handle almost any emergency.” In the rare instance that your pet needs treatment outside of Healing Hearts’ capabilities, they’ll help you coordinate the transfer and care to an outside facility. “We’re not kind or compassionate within our four walls alone - the nature of community is that it exists beyond our front door and we’re willing to go to any lengths to ensure your pet’s needs are met, wherever they end up.” Dr. Berschauer and his staff’s warmth and dedication to caring for our furry (and sometimes not so furry) family members truly sets them apart. Each came from a different medical field, but their love of animals brought them to where they are today. Ensuring that we can bring back the “oldschool feel” of veterinary medicine “where your animal is assessed and treated from head-to-toe with stateof-the-art equipment” comes first. For all creatures, great and small.

A Breakthrough in Mental Health:

KETAMINE-ASSISTED PSYCHOTHERAPY FOR DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY By Tanya Dall, MD and Justin Yanuck, MD

For decades, the traditional psychiatric model has centered on managing symptoms rather than addressing the root causes of mental health disorders.

I

n the realm of mental health treatment, the pursuit of effective solutions for depression and anxiety has been a longstanding challenge. While traditional pharmaceutical options have provided relief for many, a groundbreaking approach combining Ketamine with psychotherapy is revolutionizing the landscape. This innovative treatment offers new hope for individuals seeking lasting relief from the burdens of depression and anxiety.

psychotherapy amplifies its effectiveness. Through guided sessions, individuals can explore the root causes of their depression and anxiety, gaining valuable insights and coping strategies. This combination of pharmacological intervention and therapeutic support creates a powerful synergy, addressing both the physiological and psychological aspects of mental health disorders.

The Ketamine Advantage

One of the key strengths of Ketamineassisted psychotherapy lies in its adaptability to individual needs. Medical professionals work closely with patients to tailor treatment plans, ensuring a personalized approach that accounts for unique circumstances, preferences, and responses to the therapy. This methodology enhances the likelihood of sustained positive outcomes.

Ketamine, originally developed as an anesthetic, has gained recognition for its remarkable potential in treating depression and anxiety. 20 years of peer reviewed clinical trials have shown ketamine’s superior safety and efficacy in treating depression and anxiety. Administered in controlled settings under the supervision of trained medical professionals, Ketamine acts on the brain’s receptors, promoting the formation of new neural connections and enhancing mood regulation. Unlike traditional antidepressants, which may take weeks or months to show results, Ketamine’s effects can often be experienced within hours, providing rapid relief for those in urgent need. Furthermore, Ketamine’s action on building new neural connections (neuroplasticity) leads to long term relief of one’s symptoms without the need for daily medications.

Unlocking the Power of Psychotherapy While Ketamine lays the foundation for transformation, the addition of 22

Personalized Treatment Plans

Breaking the Cycle of Treatment Resistance For individuals who have experienced limited success with conventional antidepressants, Ketamine-assisted psychotherapy offers a beacon of hope. Studies have shown that this innovative approach can be particularly effective for individuals with treatment-resistant depression and anxiety. By targeting different neurotransmitter pathways, Ketamine provides a fresh perspective for those who have felt trapped in the cycle of treatment resistance.

psychotherapy is no exception. Administered in controlled clinical environments, the treatment is closely monitored by experienced healthcare professionals. This ensures that each session is conducted with the highest level of care, minimizing potential risks and maximizing therapeutic benefits. The integration of Ketamine with psychotherapy represents a groundbreaking advancement in the treatment of depression and anxiety. By combining the rapid-acting benefits of Ketamine with the introspective power of psychotherapy, individuals are granted a unique opportunity to achieve sustainable relief from their mental health challenges. As this field continues to grow and refine, it holds the promise of offering renewed hope and healing to countless individuals seeking a brighter future. How Can I Tell If I Have Skin Cancer? There are three main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Because each has many different appearances, it is important to know the early warning signs. 26

L

ook especially for change of any kind. Do not ignore a suspicious spot simply because it does not hurt. Skin cancers may be painless, but dangerous all the same. If you notice one or more of the warning signs, see a board-certified dermatologist right away, preferably one who specializes in diseases of the skin.

WHAT PATIENTS NEED TO KNOW 1. Everyone needs to perform a self-skin exam once a month.

ACTINIC KERATOSIS

An actinic keratosis (AK) is a crusty, scaly growth caused by damage from exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. An AK is considered a precancer because if left alone, it could develop into a skin cancer. AKs are the product of a lifetime accumulation of UV damage and typically appear on areas most commonly exposed sun, such as the backs of the hands, forearms, face, neck, and scalp.

BASAL CELL CARCINOMA

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most frequently occurring form of all cancers, with more than 4 million cases of diagnosed in the U.S. each year. BCCs may look like open sores, red patches, pink growths, shiny bumps, or scars. Any skin lesion that doesn’t heal, or bleeds with even gentle trauma, such as drying with a towel, is concerning for a BCC.

2. Melanoma can appear anywhere on the skin, including the palms/soles, under your nails, and places...for most, have never seen the light of day (genitalia). For this reason, it is important to look everywhere. Lock the bathroom door, get out a hand mirror, and check, it could save your life. 3. What to look for: ABCDEs, and an ugly duckling A - Asymmetry: If I draw a line down the middle, do the sides match? B - Border: Is there a nice crisp border, or does the mole melt into the surrounding skin? C - Color: Moles should be one color, one shade of brown. Is there a variety of shades or additional colors, such as black, red, white, or blue? D - Diameter: Any mole larger than 6mm, ie the head of a pencil eraser, has a higher risk of becoming melanoma.

SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells arising in the epidermis, the skin’s outermost layer. SCCs often look like scaly red patches, crusty bumps, warts, or elevated growths with a central depression. SCCs may appear suddenly and some forms are tender to touch. They can become disfiguring and sometimes deadly if allowed to grow. More than 1 million cases of SCC are diagnosed each year in the U.S., which translates to about 115 cases diagnosed every hour. Incidence has increased by 200 percent in the past three decades in the U.S., and more than 15,000 Americans die each year from this type of skin cancer.

MELANOMA

Melanoma is a very dangerous form of skin cancer. Melanoma is caused mainly by intense, occasional UV exposure (frequently leading to sunburn), especially in those who are genetically predisposed to the disease. An estimated 178,560 cases of melanoma are diagnosed in the U.S. each year and is fatal for an estimated 9,320 of these patients. Fortunately, if melanoma is recognized and treated early, it is almost always curable.

E - Evolution: Has it changed? F - The Ugly Duckling Sign: Most people have a “signature mole,” their own personal mole appearance and architecture. Is there a mole that seems different from all the others? 4. Everyone needs a full body skin exam by a board-certified dermatologist once a year, more frequently if you have a family history of skin cancer, a personal history of skin cancer, or live in an area with substantial sunshine. 27

Life. Organized. By Jody Robinson Classy Closets’ unique, custom solutions for the home and office can instantly double or even triple your storage space.

C

loset organization is something of an oxymoron at my house. Same goes for my home office. I actually do know where everything is in the stacks of paper that perpetually reside atop my desk, but good luck having anyone else make rhyme or reason of my filing “system.”

a desire to have your mess aesthetically addressed, Classy Closets will customize your work/life space with made-toorder cabinetry and organization systems for your home office, garage, bedroom, laundry room, pantry, media centers, wallbeds and more.

I’m clearly a candidate for the handiwork of a company like Classy Closets – if it’s a matter of function or simply

Think you can’t afford to bring in the professionals? Classy Closets, which has served all of Orange County and

San Diego since 2003, offers organization options for virtually every budget – from basic white melanine to solid wood cabinetry. “Nothing we do is cookie cutter,” says Company CFO Gary Pavitt. “Although Classy Closets is a franchise, we’re not governed by the rules that typically dictate processes of typical franchise operations – particularly with regard to the materials and mounting systems we use. What works in terms of style and function at a home in Tucson, for instance, wouldn’t necessarily translate to a house in Huntington Beach. So we have the freedom to customize our work to our client’s specific needs and desires.” Another differentiator is that Gary and his team manufacture their products right here in Southern California, which affords them the ability to offer their clients a broader range of product options at a level of quality that is “second to none.” And because they are “hands-on” from design consultation to manufacture and installation, Gary and his staff pride themselves on providing unparalleled customer service. “What’s really fun is having the ability to create the products in-house,” says Gary. “I really enjoy introducing new ways to make things better, bringing in new products and keeping up with the latest trends in the industry. We go out of our way to keep our customers satisfied … that’s what makes it all worthwhile. As in any business, your customers are golden and we’ve been very fortunate that a large percentage of our business is in referrals.” Repeat customers Marta and Mike Fowler of San Diego say that Classy Closets is a “dream company - one that not only delivers beautiful craftsmanship, but also that elusive quality

“Dr. J” Southern California Family Dentistry By Jody Robinson

I

don’t really read studies. I’m not a search-Google-for-the-numbers person. But I can tell you one thing as a person who experiences anxiety about dental work, it can be difficult to weight out my desire for continued ‘A’ grades from my bi-annual checkups with the fact that there are a great many dental procedures that seem overwhelming and risky. That’s why it’s so important to find the right dental professional with whom to build a long-term dental healthcare relationship. Oral health is more than just a pretty smile and comprehensive care encompassing different practice areas can be challenging to find under one roof – a hallmark that distinguishes Southern California Family Dentistry (SCFD) from others in the industry. With almost 30 years of experience in dentistry, Dr. J and his team of highly skilled dentists, hygienists, assistants, and office managers take a patient-centric approach to providing

exceptional general, cosmetic, and restorative dental care for patients of all ages. A member of the American Dental Association (ADA) and an associate fellow of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry (AAID), Dr. J holds a doctorate from the University of Southern California (USC) and completed his dental residency at the Medical College of Georgia. He took over an existing dental practice in 2006 that has now been serving the local community for over 50 years and is among only 5% of all dentists to carry the license needed to provide IV conscious sedation with his own laboratory on site to ensure 100% control over case outcomes. He and his team stay abreast of advancements in the field – both in terms of technology and continuing education. State-of-the-art dental technologies - diagnostic x-rays, CT scans and intraoral cameras - provide accurate and efficient diagnosis. Maybe it’s because I’m getting older, but I’m paying a bit more attention to information on dental implants and “teeth in a day” procedures than I have in the past. So many questions come to mind. How do you know if you’re a good candidate? Is the procedure really done in just one day? What are the benefits of dental implants versus dentures? How long do they last?

30

Because implant surgery is extremely technique-sensitive, an inexperienced dentist may not fully comprehend certain aspects until he or she gains the necessary skills that comes with time and repeated practice. Having placed dental implants for over 20 years and the placement of 20 to 30 dental implants per month (versus three to five in a year like some providers), Dr. J’s practice checks my first box: Experience. In terms of dentures vs. dental implants, Dr. J says removable dentures do not feel like real teeth because “they rest on top of the gums” so the majority of people who wear dentures must restrict their food intake. According to studies, complete dentures are only 20% as effective as natural teeth. “With dental implants, biting is significantly more effective, diminishing the potential for gastrointestinal issues.” “The best scenario is for the dentist who will be making the teeth to decide where the implant will be placed so that a single person is accountable for the entire procedure from start to finish,” says Dr. J. This is what we do here at SCFD - the same dentist who places the implant(s) is also in charge of restoring the implant. Dr. J adds that “the obvious benefit of dental implants is never having to go without teeth and completing the procedures in less time ensures you preserve the surrounding bone.” Anchored to it, these fittings are the final step in a process which begins with a dental consultation, diagnostic work up, x-rays, and extraction of any

remaining teeth. What used to take weeks however, can now be streamlined into a single appointment. “Dental implants are extremely safe,” he says. “They have been around for

decades now and there have been no issues with biocompatibility or rejections due to allergic reactions. The only thing unsafe about implants is inexperience. “Missing teeth can directly and indirectly contribute to many health problems. Patients with many missing teeth or no teeth, show poor dietary habits and nutritional intake, increased risk of hypertension, coronary artery diseases and osteoporosis. There’s also the obvious esthetic benefit of not being without teeth. However, having a healthy mouth and a full set of teeth is the greatest benefit that implants offer.” There are a few questions that come from outlining that process - from a pain perspective, and also a practicality. When can I eat normally again? Will it be uncomfortable or irritating? Can I resume normal activities right away? The healing process typically takes about three to six months and primarily depends on the individual patient’s health and the quality of the bone that the implant is placed in. H. Jahangiri, DDS

“Dental implants can last just as long as natural teeth,” says Dr. J. “What

we do in implant dentistry is replace hopeless teeth, so if you take care of your implants the same way as your original teeth (that you lost), the results cannot be expected to be any better. However, if implants are taken care of properly, they can last as long as (if not longer than) teeth.” The boxes all check. Not only for a regular dental cleaning and checkups, but for long-term healthcare that you can truly build at the top of the body and work your way down. Whether you need a routine cleaning or a more complex procedure such as dental implants, you can trust that you are in the best of hands at Southern California Family Dentistry. “Oral health impacts the whole body - and when we can get you smiling, we’re well on our way to restoring a critical piece of that puzzle.” I’d imagine there’s at least a single study to prove that out. Don’t take my word for it though, give Dr. J a call and see what might get you into (or back into!) the dentist’s chair.

Sessions West Coast Deli Modern, authentic house-made sandwiches, salads, soups and breakfast fare By Jody Robinson My son and his friends recently decided they’d like to try surfing. There happened to be a decent wave at Doheny, so I dropped them for a half day. Afterwards, several starving teenagers climbed back into the minivan and rather than drive through the nearest fast food establishment, I opted to treat them to something better – Sessions West Coast Deli (SWCD). The deli, which has been serving perfect neighborhood fare since opening its original site on the Balboa Peninsula nearly a decade ago, now boasts locations across Orange County – South Coast Plaza, The Shops at Mission Viejo, downtown Huntington Beach, Irvine and Fashion Island. A step way above the hole in the wall counter at your neighborhood bodega, Sessions was the brainchild of OC born and raised Matt Meddock, Beck38

ham Thomas and Chef Max Schlutz. Their fare is modern, authentic and house-made. Early morning eats include breakfast sandwiches, toasts (i.e. signature Avo) and breakfast burritos. Sides, salads, and soups are prepped on-site, and made to order alongside locally grown produce and artisan bread delivered on the daily. The kids’ faves this day? The Goodmother and the Hybrid of Awesome – a pair of the “best sandwiches ever to hit the lip.” The first is piled high with genoa salami, country ham, provo-nello, cherry pepper, red onion, parmesan, basil aioli, mixed greens,

herb vinaigrette on ciabatta while the latter combines roast beef, harvati, swiss, pickled onion, fresh mint, pickled red fresno, harissa on rustic Italian. The Shaka Spuds – housemade potato chips seasoned with sage, rosemary and parmesan – are the ideal complement. Salads range from the Wedge Legend (think smoked bacon, chicken, goat cheese), Thai Chop and Cran-Apple to the fresh and flavorful Kale Yeah! (urban baby kale and swiss chard, Peruvian peppers, red onion, fresh Parmesan, candied walnut, dried cranberry and toasted granola). Cutting a balance between the highbrow New York gourmet and coastal Californian laid-back ethos, what you taste is both cutting edge and homecooked.

Ask a SOMM By Jody Robinson

A good sommelier is a helper, a guide to finding the best wine for your food and experience. For this month’s installment, we again approached South County-based sommelier Micah Sampson for a bit of education about the wine/food pairings, whether the size and shape of the glass makes a difference and whether wine should be decanted before its served. Q Does white really go with

fish/seafood and red with red meat or is there some overlap?

A When in doubt the white with

seafood and red with red meat is a good rule. But of course, there’s definitely some overlap here when getting into the details. There are some fantastic lighter bodied red wines out there that can easily be paired with fish and other seafoods. Some of my favorites are Pinot Noir, Beaujolais, and Grenache, each of them have a light body with very light tannins, won’t overpower the delicate fish. And for red meats you can easily pour a full bodied white wine that has high acidity, think California Chardonnays, white Rhone blends, Rieslings and Chenin Blancs. All of these have nice body that can stand up to high fat red meats, and nice acidity that can shine through some of the more robust seasonings and marinades that are used to cook them.

Sommelier Micah Sampson 40

Q Does the shape/size of the

wine glass make a difference?

A This is one of those topics that I wish people took more seriously! In short, yes, the shape and size of the glass makes a huge difference! Wine glasses are designed with very specific shapes and sizes to help deliver wine aromas to your nose. If search “red wine glass” and “white wine glass” you’ll notice red wine glasses are much bigger and more bowl shaped, that’s because there are vapors coming off the wine as the alcohol slowly evaporates, those vapors are filled with compounds that help you taste the wine. White wines a typically chilled and won’t give off as much aromas, therefore the glass doesn’t need to be as large. Another reason for the smaller shape for whites is they don’t need need to aerate like reds do, less surface area reduces aeration and keeps the wine cooler. Reds on the other hand love to aerate and

therefore need all the surface area to slowly oxidize (in a good way). The bowl-shaped narrower opening at the top of the glass does two things that are both very important: 1) It helps trap the aromas into a smaller area to help you small them. Think about how much more difficult it would be to smell wine in a cereal bowl with an 8 inch opening than a wine glass with a 2 inch opening. 2) It helps keep the wine in the glass when you swirl the heck out of it, which you should do! I love swirling wine, it introduces oxygen (good oxidation) into the wine and gets all those great aromas swirling around the glass for you to smell!

Q Should I decant wine before

I drink it?

A Decanting can do wonders for

your wine, but it isn’t always necessary. You should have a nice decanter at home if you’re serious about enjoying some great red wines (don’t worry about decanting white wines), and that decanter should have a nice wide bottom that creates a ton of surface area when the wine is poured in, and a narrow top that keeps too much air from getting introduced and makes it easy to pour a glass. The types of red wines you’re decanting are usually full bodied reds that usually have a some age on them (like 5-10+ years), not those cheap red blends you’re buying for $8.99 at the market. The idea behind decanting is you’re introducing oxygen into the wine and a chemical change is happening, a lot of those volatile compounds (bad aromas) are evaporating off and the harsher tannins are softening up a bit, which allows you to enjoy the wine more. So, if you have a 2010 Barolo or a 2015 Napa Cabernet, let those bad boys decant for 30-60 minutes, maybe take some small sips and smells during that time so you can see how the wine changes.

The Lodge at Torrey Pines

An Unforgettably Luxurious Escape

By Jody Robinson

La Jolla has long been one of our family’s favorite stay-cation destinations. We’ve trekked south to this chic coastal enclave with the kids to kayak the infamous seven sea caves, got up close and personal with scores of sea lions in La Jolla Cove, indulged in an afternoon of classic cars against a backdrop of the glittering Pacific at the annual Concours d’Elegance and whiled away many a day over the years strolling the city’s picturesque streets lined with art galleries, unique boutiques, popular retailers and destination dining establishments. 44

In fact, my husband, Tim, often says La Jolla tops his wish list of locales to live in our retirement. Until then, it will continue to hold a place in our hearts – particularly for special occasions like our recent wedding anniversary where we indulged in a lovely adults-only weekend away at the atmospheric Lodge at Torrey Pines. Situated just north of the Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve, this tranquil AAA 5-Diamond rated cliffside resort takes its name from the 1,750 sprawling adjacent acres of unspoiled land

populated with one of the country’s rarest pine trees. Driving in, we were transported to another era – one defined by Craftsman detailing (think brick, stone and wood beams), expansive public rooms with fireplaces, marble mantles, deep leather chairs and panoramic views. It’s easy to see why Sunset Magazine rated The Lodge as the #1 Hotel in the West and described it as “one of the most beautiful hotels anywhere.” Our stunning guest accommodation featured the most luxurious Egyptian cotton linens, gorgeous over-sized

For the golf aficionado, the legendary landmark 36-hole facility owned by the City of San Diego originally designed by William F. Bell is home of the annual Farmers Insurance Open and 2008 and 2021 U.S. Open. The South Course was redesigned in 2001 by Rees Jones in preparation for the 2008 U.S. Open and is now 7,698 yards with a par of 72. The North Course is 7,258 yards in length with a par of 72. For the first time in over two decades, guest rooms are available at The Lodge at Torrey Pines during the 2024 Farmers Insurance Open, providing a unique opportunity for golf fans to join in the excitement. Indulge in luxury accommodations, privileged viewing areas, and the chance to rub shoulders with golf legends, all while immersing yourself in the elegance and sophistication of The Lodge -located adjacent to the 18th hole of Torrey Pines Golf Course! This is truly

a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for golf fans to be up-close to the action during a major golf tournament. For health and wellness enthusiasts like me, The Lodge showcases a full-service spa and state-of-the-art fitness center, as well as abundant open-air recreational opportunities from outdoor yoga and croquet to golf, and of course, a gorgeous heated pool. Enjoy hiking? You’ll be hard pressed to find a more inviting network of trails and rugged coastal cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean than

Tim and I fancy ourselves fledgling foodies so a truly indulgent dining experience was definitely on the menu with a reservation at the resort’s excellent signature A.R. Valentien, where Executive Chef Kelli Crosson (pioneer of the farm-to-table movement) reinvents his menu almost daily. The elegant ambiance carries through the wood-heavy, chandelier-strewn indoor-outdoor space and the regional cuisine worth writing home about. Examples of inventive starters and entrees include Debruin Farms Tempura Quail, Leek and Stinging Nettle Soup, Marcona Almond Crusted Swordfish and Brandt Beef Prime Ribeye paired with sides like roasted beets with pistachio butter and buttermilk and chive smashed potatoes. An architectural masterpiece, the Lodge draws inspiration from the early 20th century Craftsman period – beautifully showcased in the resort’s distinctive woodwork, fabrics and bespoke furnishings. C

alling all existing Medicare Beneficiaries, are you looking to save some money on either your monthly premiums, your co-pays, or your prescription drug co-pays? Then the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) is the time for you to make a change to your current plan. All changes made during this time (10/15 – 12/7) go into effect 1/1/24. The biggest way to save money is to see if a Medicare Advantage plan would work for you. If it does meet your needs, then you cancel your Medicare Supplement and Medicare Drug plan for 2024 because the Medicare Advantage plan gives you that type of coverage and financial protection from medical bills. You’re no longer paying a premium for Medicare Supplement or a Medicare RX plan if you decide to enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan. These plans in Orange County typically have no or low premiums and are both HMO’s and PPO’s. Regarding a “standalone” Medicare RX plan, some plans use to not have a name brand drug deductible and now they do. Have your prescriptions changed since you enrolled in your current Medicare RX plan? If they’re expensive medications (in the $40-$100 range or higher when you refill them) then it’s time for a review The Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (also known as AEP) ends December 7th, if you’d like to schedule a no cost Medicare options review contact me soon, my calendar is already filling up! 49

ask questions, and read a few pages of several books. Plan to spend an hour leisurely browsing around. Lastly, when in doubt, go for a stretch towards a book that is a bit above your child’s reading level rather than below. That’s where you come in: be ready to answer questions about new words!

Parenting:

Encouraging Children to Read and Four Fun Activities to Help Motivate Them! By Keira Pride, Manager of Library Services - Stratford School

“You are never alone when you are lost in the magic of a book.” – Marie Lu, Author A love of reading opens the door to adventures, learning new things and a whole host of key language skills such as speech development and vocabulary building. Spending time with books also creates special moments for you to bond with your child and enjoy each other’s company. And it only takes a few minutes with a book to spark your curious little one’s interest. Recently we had the opportunity to discuss top tips on fostering a love of literature with Stratford’s Manager of Library Services, Keira Pride, and here are some excerpts from that conversation. 50

1. How can parents encourage their kids to read? Children love to see their parents reading, and will imitate them. If they see Mom or Dad enjoying a great book as a part of their day, the children will want to read as well. So consider creating a reading nook in the house with fun pillows, lots of light, and a shelf full of books. Allow them to stay up fifteen minutes later, but only if they are reading. Small steps daily are how habits are created. 2. What qualities should someone look for when shopping for children’s books? First, bring your children to the bookstore or local library and ask for help. The trained experts there are full of ideas. Secondly, allow your child to look around at the library or store,

3. Are there any specific children’s books you recommend? I fill the libraries at Stratford School with lots of series, that way the students are always looking for the next book. Children love familiarity and repetition - the characters in the stories become their friends. Rick Riordan Presents series is one of my favorites. Great middle grade authors write these from underrepresented cultures and backgrounds, telling their own stories inspired by the mythology and folklore of their heritage. Aru Shah and the End of Time, by Roshani Chokshi, for example, is the first in a series of five middle grade fantasy books rooted in Hindu mythology. Sam and Dave Dig a Hole, written by Mac Barnett, illustrated by Jon Klassen, is my desert island book - if I was stranded on a deserted island, and could only bring one picture book, it would be this one. After reading it aloud over 50 times, it still makes me laugh, and I will never tire of the joy it brings to students of all ages. Sam and Dave are young boys out in the backyard with their dog, a canteen, and a few shovels, looking for “something spectacular.” No internet, no video games, no phones, nothing but the open sky and the earth below them. They find an adventure for themselves, and how they do that is magical. Ms. Pride concludes with “while it is important for children to learn, try not to overthink the content of the books your children are reading. Any reading is good reading. A child with a book is improving not only their vocabulary and comprehension, but also exploring a new world. Concentration and attention span will improve because reading a book stimulates children’s brains in ways that are unique. And remember, if your child has chosen a book themselves, they are more likely to read it!”

FOUR FUN ACTIVITIES TO FURTHER MOTIVATE YOUR CHILDREN TO HELP ENGAGE READING! Now let’s explore a captivating collection of activities that are sure to spark your child’s love for reading. From bookmarks to creating a character profile, these activities are sure to prepare your child for endless fun and learning!

short story about what happens next. They can place characters in a completely different story using their own creativity and send them off on a new, exciting adventure or decide to place them in the original story to explore what happens next? Writing stories help children explore their ideas, express their own creativity, and reinforce sentence structure, vocabulary, and grammar all at the same time!

a picture and write key details about their character including physical appearance and interests. This activity can be motivating for a child as they see their favorite character in a different context that can be both entertaining and engaging.

1. MAKE A BOOKMARK – Making a special bookmark is a fun way to get children into the habit of reading more regularly. In this activity, children make their own bookmark based on their favorite book and include a drawing of their favorite scene. Include a space for them to write about their favorite character and include any new words they learned.

3. CREATE A READING PASSPORT – Motivate children by asking them to fill in a reading passport as they read a new book and it’s another fun way to encourage reading. Each new book allows the child to enter a different world and once they have visited each new place, they complete a new page in their reading passport and receive a stamp. Just think of the fun they’ll have by traveling the world through books!

Making reading an enjoyable part of your child’s life starts with incorporating books into your daily routine. And part of learning to enjoy reading, is being around books at home. Try starting a book collection for your children and, if available, check with your local library for information on story time programs. These meet-ups can be a great way for children to enjoy books while being social with other children and families, and helps reinforce the wonderful, magical world of reading and the vast array of places it can take them!

2. CREATE THEIR OWN STORY – This activity is creative and asks children to choose their favorite book and then use their imagination to write a

4. DEVELOP A CHARACTER PROFILE – Ask children to choose their favorite character and produce a poster of that character. Ask the child to draw

es, we try to give our students all that is necessary to help them become independent, self-sufficient, and aware young adults. High school graduation is our first goal because it gives our students a better chance to break those cycles of homelessness, abuse, addiction and more. A high school diploma is fundamental to long-term life opportunities, stability and self-sufficiency. Since 2015, the inception of our program, 191 Robyne’s Nest Students have graduated from high school.

Join Us in Changing the Future of Our Community – One Student at a Time! By Robyne Wood, Director and Founder of ROBYNE’S NEST

As a young teen, I grew up in an extremely toxic and dysfunctional home with little to no parental or family support.

T

o escape that unhealthy environment, I left home when I was 17 and finished high school on my own by working full-time and attending night classes. After graduation, I attended the local community college while working full-time in operational positions. My education, combined with working in the real world, changed my life and gave me a chance to grow into the adult I wanted to become: a successful businesswoman, wife and mother who is happily involved in her community. I had originally thought that as long as I left my dysfunctional home, I was going to conquer the world. As my twenties went on, I realized there were many life skills I was missing and life opportunities where I had to learn them. Then after my first child was born, the bottom fell out for me emotionally and I knew that therapy was the only answer. Years of differ-

ent types of abuse and emotional neglect had finally taken hold of me, and I could not escape or avoid it anymore. It was time to break the cycles and change my life, my children’s lives. Robyne’s Nest was created, out of love and empathy, to help and guide these at-risk and homeless high school students (who are alcohol and drug-free) in that critical window of time between youth and adulthood. We created a program that I would have loved to have had when I was a teen. Our Standard (Student Care) Program Support Services include housing, mental health therapy, life skills education, career mentoring and personal coaching with our trained volunteers. We provide clothing and food assistance, educational support, transportation, and legal support. Combined with our one-on-one wrap-around servic-

“It’s about Breaking Cycles that Changes Lives.” - Robyne Wood 52

We are proud to say that during the 2022-2023 school year, we provided (2,406) nights of safe housing, (685) hours of mental health therapy and 26 life skills classes to the students enrolled in our program. In addition, we work with school administrators to meet the basic needs of their at-risk students, in an effort to remove the barriers for them to focus on school. This last school year we provided 23,572 meals in the form of grab n go pantries and school break food bags, and $11,795 in toiletries and clothing to students in the schools.

Director and Founder Robyne Wood

At Robyne’s Nest, we are very much in the business of helping students create a new foundation to build the life they want to have. Each step is a success. Each day that the new habits overtake the old habits is a success. Each student (191) that has graduated from high school in our program is a success. www.robynesnest.org

AEP- It’s About Saving You $$ By Stephanie Frisch

Calling all existing Medicare Beneficiaries, are you looking to save some money on either your monthly premiums, your co-pays, your prescription drug co-pays or perhaps a trifecta and you get all three, then contact me to review your options.

T

he biggest way to save money is to see if a Medicare Advantage plan would work for you. If it does work, you cancel your Medicare Supplement and Medicare Drug plan for 2024 because a Medicare Advantage plan gives you that type of coverage and financial protection from costly medical bills. These types of plans in Orange County typically have little to no premium. The savings can be life changing to some people, especially married couples over the age of 70. Medicare supplement plan premiums go up as you get older AND they can also have premium increases related to the cost of medical care for their enrollees. Most people on a “standalone” Medicare prescription drug plan don’t realize when their monthly premium increases in the new year because if they’re taking social security the premium is usually being directly deducted from their social security check. Many insurance companies have increases in their monthly RX plan premium or their annual deductible or both! Have your prescriptions changed since you first enrolled i n y o u r c u r re n t Medicare drug plan? If they’re expensive medications (in the $40-$100 range

when you fill them) then it’s time for a review. If you’re on several name brand medications, and you started taking them mid-year, chances are that you won’t hit the “donut hole” this year. But you certainly have a good chance of it happening next year so make sure that you’re on the best plan in terms of co-pays and entering the “donut hole aka coverage gap”. Also, while AEP is NOT the time to change your Medicare supplement plan (The months around your birthday month are, it’s called the “birthday rule”) it could be a time to get educated about what other carrier’s premiums are for the Medicare supplement plan that you’re on.

Medicare Supplement plans are all standardized by the government. A Plan F, Plan G or Plan N, for example, are all the same, no matter what insurance company you use. However, some insurance carriers have upped their game, adding additional benefits such as routine vision and hearing, acupuncture and more to their Medicare supplement plan for a more “value added” experience. The additional premium for these extra benefits are minimal. The Medicare Annual Enrollment period (aka AEP) ends December 7th, if you’d like to schedule a no cost Medicare options review contact me soon, my calendar is already filling up.
