Iwas doing a bit of research on word origins recently in helping my son with a high school assignment. I discovered the root “hospes,” which comes from “hostis.” But what was interesting was that the etymology actually branches off into “host,” “guest,” or “stranger.” And gives us the word hospitality.
As defined, hospitality is “the friendly and generous reception and entertainment of guests, visitors, or strangers.” In giving my son examples of real-life application, I thought of Jay Minor. As the owner of Assisted Living Locators, Jay lives the term hospitality as a daily discipline and practice. Those he serves would likely describe it as life-changing.

When I was younger, my Mom loved to read me the book “If You Give A Mouse A Cookie.” The plot essentially revolves around an ever-growing list of to-do’s that had to be accomplished, all set into motion by the simple act of giving a mouse a cookie. Why Children Should Participate in Extracurricular Activities Freedom in Play:

The old adage “all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy” still holds true even today. Playtime and extracurricular activities help contribute to a child’s overall development. If we want to raise successful children, it’s important to acknowledge that learning isn’t something that only takes place within the four walls of a classroom. A tremendous amount of learning also happens outside of a classroom setting.
According to Jeanne Huybrechts, Stratford School’s Chief Academic Officer, the most tangible benefits of getting your child involved in extracurricular activities include teamwork, a sense of belonging, and early skill development that results in cognitive imprinting and muscle memory.
Undertaking extracurricular activities has far-ranging benefits that touch on many aspects of a child’s development. Here are five advantages of extracurricular activities, demonstrating why you should encourage your child to take on something away from the classroom.
LEARN NEW SKILLS - One of the fundamental benefits of extracurricular activities is that they allow your child to learn something that could
stay with them for a lifetime. Directly, that skill could be the basis of a hobby or passion that enriches their life for many years. Everything from playing sports to learning an instrument could lead to hours spent doing something they truly enjoy.
UNDERSTAND A ROUTINE - Extracurricular activity involve structure and a predictable series of events that help children get on a schedule. The more they get comfortable sticking to a routine, the easier it gets for them to adhere to a schedule of activities both at home and school. And because their expectations are set, anxieties and stress in children are reduced.
BOOST ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE - Education requires solid problem-solving skills, memory, creativity, and critical thinking. To varying degrees, you can find an extracurricular activity that has an impact on these areas. Research has been carried out that develops a link between extracurricular participation and better academic performance. In one such study, important academic outcomes like reading, math achievement, and course grades were all found to be positively influenced by children who engage in extracurricular activities.
BROADER SOCIAL SKILLS - The very nature of many extracurricular activities means that your child will be engaging with other children in a social setting. Away from the classroom, it’s a good opportunity for them to mix with likeminded children in something they all enjoy. This is another key benefit of extracurricular activities: they give children a chance to develop their social skills, meet new friends, and become more confident communicating in groups.
WELL-ROUNDED INDIVIDUAL -
Well-rounded children are known to thrive better in life. These are the ones who grow up with more confidence, sense of independence, creativity, and ability to collaborate with others with fewer conflicts and behavioral issues. They are also the children who tend to adapt to change easily and handle life’s challenges more effectively.
To help children receive the most benefits from extracurricular activity involvement physically, emotionally, and socially, Huybrechts recommends they participate in the right amount of activity for their age level and abilities: “Exposure is key as it is impossible to predict what children will enjoy and be able to do well so allow kids to try several activities. Insist on completing whatever the original agreement was – a season, a semester, etc. – and then allow them to step away if it’s not what they like. At the same time, I think it’s fair to expect children to eventually commit to one or more extracurricular activities for an extended period. Extracurricular activities can develop into life-long pursuits, even passions, yet that won’t happen until a person has developed a certain level of proficiency. Adults who regularly play golf, tennis, or chess well, or participate in a community orchestra, probably developed their passion – not to mention muscle memory – in a related activity as a child. We give our children a gift when we encourage them to stick with an activity that they clearly like for as long as it takes to get good at it – with foundational skill development that makes it easy for them to return to the activity at any time in their lives.”
In addition, there are parents who may be concerned about their child
participating in too many activities outside of school. Diversity in extracurricular activities promotes development as long as the child balances activities with the demands of school and family life. As Huybrechts cites: “Kids have different capacities and activities can be seasonal and consume different amounts of time – so there is no single number. I would aim for a couple and perhaps activities that tap into different capabilities and teach different skills: a soccer team and an after-school “coding” club; violin lessons, a school or community orchestra, or a swim team. The combinations I mention would not be taxing to children (or the parents that drive them to practice and rehearsals) and both include physical activity and a genuine team or ensemble experience.”
When you give your child the chance to participate in school activities, they learn a lot more than just the things that are covered in class. The skills and knowledge they acquire shape their well-being and help round out their holistic development.
Schools and local communities are full of exciting activities that could spark your child’s imagination and capture their attention. Try to read your child’s general interests and consider what they may or may not be interested in taking part in. Then, look to their school or the wider community to find an appropriate club for your child. As Huybrechts concludes: “When your child enjoys the activity on a regular basis, looks forward to continued participation, and sees the activity as part of their identity, you can be reasonably assured that the activity is a success.”

Dancing Through Training the Heart and Soul at South Coast Conservatory

In the 1960’s, a man named Roger W. Sperry developed a theory: that the human brain goes about thinking in two very different ways. Having worked in the field of psychobiology for years, he’d noticed that one side of the brain saw the big picture - processing information in an intuitive and simultaneous fashion. The other, putting sequential pieces together like a puzzle, parts making a whole. We all use both sides of the braincomplementing logic with creativity. But ask any dancer, writer, sculptor, or painter and they’ll tell you they’re “right brained.”
Controlling three-dimensional spatial reasoning, creativity, and artistic ability, right brain dominance certainly has given us some of the world’s greatest art forms. And South Coast Conservatory is finding more and more ways to celebrate it.
Founded in 1992, the Conservatory is heading into its 33rd year of operation. Specializing in individual and group dance in classical, contemporary and commercial, they provide programs for kids from age 2-18. Programs to help children grow, programs that train “the heart and soul of every dancer,” says Director + CEO Jena Minnick-Bull.
South Coast Conservatory offers eight separate programs, from PreAcademy to Competitive Dance Teams, a certified acro/aerial arts gym and a dance supplies store.
“We start kids in our ‘Pre-Academy’ program to introduce them to a range of dance styles, such as ballet, tap, jazz, tumbling, hip hop, and song and dance,” says Jena. “Once they grow into the ‘Academy’ program, they receive a more in depth training, also beginning to learn contemporary, break dancing, pilates, lyrical, acting, and pointe.” With one-fifth of South Coast’s kids joining the competitive level of dance, their
program structure is set perfectly to grow with them: accelerated training with elite coaches in either its “Ballet Conservatory” division, or the “Elite Academy” - prepping kids for the commercial world of dance. It isn’t just for kids either: Christina Portillo has been attending the Conservancy for over ten years as an adult, “engaging in various dance styles, performing with the Ballet Conservatory, and even competing with the adult hip hop team: Moms Crew.”
Linking up the left and right brains is an automatic function of the body - synthesizing even to the smallest degree what we are seeing out of our left and right eyes, and putting the picture together as a whole. Because each student learns differently, South Coast has set up a compassionate and individualized teaching philosophy. “We take the time to understand and aid the goals of our students.”
And dance, really, isn’t just about processing information intuitively,
as most might think. The analysis of sequential movements, for example: choreography. A projected kinetic trajectory on an angled plane: leaping. Symmetry, patterning, geometrygroup theory and permutations. Left brain and right brain working together to create beauty, community, and create a passion for learning that will persist for years beyond any single dance class.
Parents learn about passion alongside their children too. Adriana Escobar notes that she loves South Coast Conservatory because it introduced her daughter to such a passion: musical theater. “[The Conservatory] provided her with the place and people she needed to take a chance to dance, sing, and then to act. Today, it’s her passion and she is comfortable on any stage.”
Roger Sperry went on to be awarded the Nobel Prize in 1981 for his work in psychobiology - and certainly, while South Coast is preparing kids for a lifetime of creative, rightbrained pursuits, Jena notes that “all of our graduates go on to pursue many diverse degrees and careers using the lifelong skills our school provided them.”

My husband and I remember our kids’ preschool years. Which will forever be known in our home as the grouping of years when we received advice - solicited and otherwise - from everyone we knew about which school has the best standardized test scores, or the greatest teacher of all time, the coolest playground, the worst cafeteria lunches. While all that is seemingly important, we remember being more concerned with selecting a school that would combine curricular learning with foundational development for our kids’ bodies and spirits as well. It’s a particular feat to emerge from university well educated to be sure, but what good is it really to gain the world and lose your soul?
Luckily for parents of school-aged children in South OC, it’s not necessary to spend long hours searching for a program that combines a culture of mission with a developmental approach in teaching (whereby students learn through play, movement and music) and an elementary school experience that follows along

How Can I Tell If I Have Skin Cancer?
There are three main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Because each has many different appearances, it is important to know the early warning signs.
Look especially for change of any kind. Do not ignore a suspicious spot simply because it does not hurt. Skin cancers may be painless, but dangerous all the same. If you notice one or more of the warning signs, see a board-certified dermatologist right away, preferably one who specializes in diseases of the skin.
ACTINIC KERATOSIS
An actinic keratosis (AK) is a crusty, scaly growth caused by damage from exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. An AK is considered a precancer because if left alone, it could develop into a skin cancer. AKs are the product of a lifetime accumulation of UV damage and typically appear on areas most commonly exposed sun, such as the backs of the hands, forearms, face, neck, and scalp.
SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA
Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells arising in the epidermis, the skin’s outermost layer. SCCs often look like scaly red patches, crusty bumps, warts, or elevated growths with a central depression. SCCs may appear suddenly and some forms are tender to touch. They can become disfiguring and sometimes deadly if allowed to grow. More than 1 million cases of SCC are diagnosed each year in the U.S., which translates to about 115 cases diagnosed every hour. Incidence has increased by 200 percent in the past three decades in the U.S., and more than 15,000 Americans die each year from this type of skin cancer.
BASAL CELL CARCINOMA
Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most frequently occurring form of all cancers, with more than 4 million cases of diagnosed in the U.S. each year. BCCs may look like open sores, red patches, pink growths, shiny bumps, or scars. Any skin lesion that doesn’t heal, or bleeds with even gentle trauma, such as drying with a towel, is concerning for a BCC.
MELANOMA
Melanoma is a very dangerous form of skin cancer. Melanoma is caused mainly by intense, occasional UV exposure (frequently leading to sunburn), especially in those who are genetically predisposed to the disease. An estimated 178,560 cases of melanoma are diagnosed in the U.S. each year and is fatal for an estimated 9,320 of these patients. Fortunately, if melanoma is recognized and treated early, it is almost always curable.
WHAT PATIENTS NEED TO KNOW
1. Everyone needs to perform a self-skin exam once a month.
2. Melanoma can appear anywhere on the skin, including the palms/soles, under your nails, and places...for most, have never seen the light of day (genitalia). For this reason, it is important to look everywhere. Lock the bathroom door, get out a hand mirror, and check, it could save your life.
3. What to look for: ABCDEs, and an ugly duckling
A - Asymmetry: If I draw a line down the middle, do the sides match?
B - Border: Is there a nice crisp border, or does the mole melt into the surrounding skin?
C - Color: Moles should be one color, one shade of brown. Is there a variety of shades or additional colors, such as black, red, white, or blue?
D - Diameter: Any mole larger than 6mm, ie the head of a pencil eraser, has a higher risk of becoming melanoma.
E - Evolution: Has it changed?
F - The Ugly Duckling Sign: Most people have a “signature mole,” their own personal mole appearance and architecture. Is there a mole that seems different from all the others?
4. Everyone needs a full body skin exam by a board-certified dermatologist once a year, more frequently if you have a family history of skin cancer, a personal history of skin cancer, or live in an area with substantial sunshine.

One of the biggest transactions the average person will make in their lifetime is the sale of their home. The number of annual home sales hit an all-time high a few years ago in 2017, totaling around seven million. Since then, numbers have dropped for various reasons, but brokers, lenders, and real estate agents are still seeing transactions in the millions each year. The average listing agent sees those numbers and wonders what size their slice of the pie could be. Glen Hughes sees the same statistic, but measures in relationships.
SYC Listing is a new division of Hughes Realty Group, which has been around for the last 20 years. Glen himself has been licensed for the last 27, and specializing in all aspects of residential real estate since he received his broker license 17 years ago. So why change the game, if the rules are the same as they were two decades ago?
“Most agents out there work for a broker that takes a percentage of their commission and has to follow their rules, which gives them very little flexibility,” he says. “I wanted to receive 100% of the commission so that I could give part of it back to my clients.”

In my opinion, this is simply not fair, and this is why I am offering this concept to anyone that wishes to sell their home.
My solution to this is simple: You tell me what you feel is a fair commission to pay in order to sell your home. We come to an agreement, and you save thousands, and in some cases, tens of thousands in commission. It is truly that simple."

Q Does white really go with fish/seafood and red with red meat or is there some overlap?
A When in doubt the white with seafood and red with red meat is a good rule. But of course, there’s definitely some overlap here when getting into the details. There are some fantastic lighter bodied red wines out there that can easily be paired with fish and other seafoods. Some of my favorites are Pinot Noir, Beaujolais, and Grenache, each of them have a light body with very light tannins, won’t overpower the delicate fish. And for red meats you can easily pour a full bodied white wine that has high acidity, think California Chardonnays, white Rhone blends, Rieslings and Chenin Blancs. All of these have nice body that can stand up to high fat red meats, and nice acidity that can shine through some of the more robust seasonings and marinades that are used to cook them.
Q Does the shape/size of the wine glass make a difference?
A This is one of those topics that I wish people took more seriously! In short, yes, the shape and size of the glass makes a huge difference! Wine glasses are designed with very specific shapes and sizes to help deliver wine aromas to your nose. If search “red wine glass” and “white wine glass” you’ll notice red wine glasses are much bigger and more bowl shaped, that’s because there are vapors coming off the wine as the alcohol slowly evaporates, those vapors are filled with compounds that help you taste the wine. White wines a typically chilled and won’t give off as much aromas, therefore the glass doesn’t need to be as large. Another reason for the smaller shape for whites is they don’t need need to aerate like reds do, less surface area reduces aeration and keeps the wine cooler. Reds on the other hand love to aerate and
therefore need all the surface area to slowly oxidize (in a good way). The bowl-shaped narrower opening at the top of the glass does two things that are both very important: 1) It helps trap the aromas into a smaller area to help you small them. Think about how much more difficult it would be to smell wine in a cereal bowl with an 8 inch opening than a wine glass with a 2 inch opening. 2) It helps keep the wine in the glass when you swirl the heck out of it, which you should do! I love swirling wine, it introduces oxygen (good oxidation) into the wine and gets all those great aromas swirling around the glass for you to smell!
Q Should I decant wine before I drink it?
A good sommelier is a helper, a guide to finding the best wine for your food and experience. For this month’s installment, we again approached South County-based sommelier Micah Sampson for a bit of education about the wine/food pairings, whether the size and shape of the glass makes a difference and whether wine should be decanted before its served. Micah is happy to connect personally His
A Decanting can do wonders for your wine, but it isn’t always necessary. You should have a nice decanter at home if you’re serious about enjoying some great red wines (don’t worry about decanting white wines), and that decanter should have a nice wide bottom that creates a ton of surface area when the wine is poured in, and a narrow top that keeps too much air from getting introduced and makes it easy to pour a glass. The types of red wines you’re decanting are usually full bodied reds that usually have a some age on them (like 5-10+ years), not those cheap red blends you’re buying for $8.99 at the market. The idea behind decanting is you’re introducing oxygen into the wine and a chemical change is happening, a lot of those volatile compounds (bad aromas) are evaporating off and the harsher tannins are softening up a bit, which allows you to enjoy the wine more. So, if you have a 2010 Barolo or a 2015 Napa Cabernet, let those bad boys decant for 30-60 minutes, maybe take some small sips and smells during that time so you can see how the wine changes.

San Clemente Village Helping Older Adults in Our Community Live Their Best Lives

I
think most folks are familiar with the old adage “it takes a village,” I’ve certainly found it to be true when I was a mom of young kids and now as the child of an aging parent. Perhaps one of the most incredible examples emerged out of the
Boston area in the early 2000s when an online retirement service organization let its residents, near and far, come together to age gracefully, surrounded by friends.
Over the last quarter century, the model has expanded westward and caught the attention of Jessica Reiter-Flax, now Director of San Clemente Village in South Orange County.
Part of the Village Movement California, San Clemente Village started in 2014 as a hope that “neighbors would help neighbors.” Two years later, it is currently the only full-service not-for-profit service Village in Orange County and Jessica hopes to “continue our geographic reach to include more South County communities in the coming years.”
The 100% volunteer driven membership organization provides services for local seniors ranging from transportation to appointments, grocery shopping, social outings to happy hours and help around the house. The average volunteer is 65 years young - looking for ways to give back.
Village Board Member Barry Mulkay, 74, and his wife Peggy, 72, both village volunteers and social members since 2018, originally joined the Village to “be of service to our community.”
Married for 53 years with two sons and three wonderful grandchildren, the couple “enjoy meeting new people and learning about everyone’s life and experiences, backgrounds and families and have made lifelong friendships through our participation.”
“We really enjoy helping our members in taking care of their many needs, including doctor and dental visits, help around the home and grocery shopping,” says Barry. “It feels really great seeing how appreciative the members are of our help.”
Village volunteers and social members Owen and Darlene Martin echo the Mulkay’s sentiment.
After retiring from a 35-year career in the mortgage industry, Owen joined The Village as a social member in last July.
“After retiring I just wanted to sit back & relax,” he says. “My wife was also retired but kept herself busy as a volunteer for the village. She would come home from taking someone to an appointment or attending an activity with the village and would tell me about the fun time she had getting to know other people. It sounded great and I was ready to get involved. One of the greatest benefits of joining was getting my social life going again.”

Things like Sunday brunch or a movie matinee may not seem like they make a huge difference in the overall cognitive, physical, or psychological success rates of older adults (aged 87, on average). But more than 70% of seniors want to remain in their homes as they age “and the Village helps them do just that. They can socialize easily, which reduces isolation, maintaining a state of continuous physical and mental well-being.”
Members like 91-years-young Claudette Miller has made “many strong, lasting friendships” since joining San Clemente Village in 2019 and credits the organization with allowing her to maintain her independence and dignity. The mother of four, grandmother of 12 and great-grandmother of 24 shares that she “used to take cabs everywhere until I joined the Village. Not only is it much more cost effective, the true benefit comes from the time I spend with volunteers during my rides to and from my appointments and in participating in the various activities and events. The village keeps me young, active and social.”
One of more than 40 such organizations throughout the state, San Clemente Village helps older adults in the community live their best lives, and its volunteers are always ready to welcome new members into the fold. After all, with a full roster of wellness initiatives, grocery store, technology assistance and even fall risk reduction preparedness, it really does take a village.

In writing this editorial, I recalled a friend once asking me to explain the premise of a book called “All Creatures Great and Small.”

How to Thrive at Home: The Art of Choosing Incontinence Products for Bladder Leaks

Whether aging in place at home, or residing in a senior living community, older adults living with incontinence face unique health challenges.
The risk of pressure sores, UTI’s, and falls are all unfortunately common problems that occur in these individuals. However, seniors can greatly reduce their risk of these challenges, and subsequently, reduce their risk of ending up in the hospital by choosing high quality incontinence products. Below are two features to look for in an incontinence product.
1. Fully Breathable Products.
Fully breathable products that allow the skin to breathe will reduce the risk of pressure sores.
Without breathability, the person wearing the product may get skin irritations and skin breakdowns. Not only can these skin irritations become very painful, but the worry, and ancillary negative effects (such as possible hospital admission, decreased quality of life, time, and money) are staggering.
In addition to wearing a fully breathable product, choosing skin care products and washcloths that protect
elderly thinning skin are equally as important. Transparent barrier creams and “no water needed” cleansing creams, for example, can aid in reducing risk of irritation.
2. Super Absorbent Products.
Getting a good night’s sleep is important. Super absorbent products are key in helping older adults who have bladder leaks sleep through the night. “Restorative sleep”, the term meaning 7-9 hours of uninterrupted sleep that allows a person to go through the 4-5 sleep cycles, has many proven benefits, including cell regeneration, tissue healing, hormone regulation, and being more alert in the morning.
If a person is wearing a product that keeps them dry longer, and is made from soft comfortable materials, the likelihood of them staying in bed at night is greater. If they stay in bed, they reduce their risk of falling during the night, whereas others wearing a less absorbent product may wake up in the night, wet and uncomfortable. In turn, that person gets up out of bed groggy and thus a fall may happen. Falls are a leading contributor to hospital admissions. Choosing high quality products helps reduce the risk!
Super absorbent products may also reduce the risk of urinary tract infections in older adults if they are wearing a high-quality product with a double absorbent core that locks
in urine while decreasing bacterial growth. A double absorbent core helps to wick moisture away from the skin quickly, thus keeping people dry and comfortable, while also reducing urine odor.

CMS said it would recalculate all of the 2024 quality ratings, but only apply the results if a plan’s ratings go up under the new methodology. If a plan’s ratings go down, the change won’t be implemented CMS said in a guidance document.
By paving the way for higher payments, the CMS move provides a win for Medicare insurers at a time when their business is under pressure from rising healthcare costs.
At issue are the 2024-star ratings of privately run Medicare Advantage health plans, which CMS ranks on a scale of one to five stars. Higher quality by CMS standards equals more stars. A CMS spokesperson said the agency is committed to accurately measuring the quality of care that Medicare plans provide. CMS noted that it will update the 2024-star rating information for all Medicare Advantage plans on Medicare.gov in the coming weeks. They also said that plans with star ratings that were increased in 2024 due to the discovery of their error will be able to resubmit their 2025 plan benefits to them with any positive changes due to the additional money that they now know they’ll receive.

According to the Wall Street Journal, A federal judge first ruled in a case regarding SCAN Healthplan that the Medicare agency had erred in implementing certain technical changes for this year’s quality ratings, which affect bonus payments to the insurance company in 2025. The judge ordered the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to recalculate SCAN’s ratings, SCAN reported this
recalculation will increase its 2025 Medicare payments by about $250 million. Also receiving bonuses from this correction are Humana and United Healthgroup.
A CMS spokesperson said the agency is committed to accurately measuring the quality of care that Medicare plans provide.
