SAT scores. Kids who study music become better listeners, and their ability to focus and ignore unnecessary noise improves. They also actively participate in class more. Music isn’t just good for the brain. Some instruments can help children develop motor skills and coordination as well. Instruments like the piano or violin encourage ambidexterity since they require different movements from each hand. Percussion instruments like drums require simultaneous movement from the feet, arms, and hands. Nurturing skills like timing and coordination can also benefit other activities like theater, dance, and sports.

Four Benefits of Music Lessons for Kids

I

f you feel that your child is missing something from their extracurricular activities, you might want to consider music lessons. That’s because the benefits that come with learning music are extensive, especially for kids. Music lessons hone a variety of academic, physical, and soft skills. They also encourage brain development and boost self-esteem. Learning music can also instill positive, long-lasting changes in your child’s brain, skills, and personality, which are all beneficial to their happiness and overall well-being. And although STEM is not always associated with the arts, we at Stratford School believe that music is part of a well-rounded education for kids, and continually exploring new things is part of our values. That is why we are talking about a handful of benefits that music offers students.

ACCELERATES BRAIN 1. MUSIC DEVELOPMENT A study by the Brain and Creativity Institute at the University of Southern California found that learning to play a musical instrument can accelerate brain development in young children. The five-year study of six and seven-year-old kids showed that music instruction increased the efficiency of pathways in the brain, specifically their auditory pathway. With a more matured auditory pathway, these kids were able to process sound more efficiently, detecting pitch changes in melodies, distinguishing tones, and so on. This skill can positively affect areas other than music, too. The auditory system is also fundamental to language development, communication, and reading skills.

IMPROVES ACADEMIC SKILLS 2. MUSIC AND PHYSICAL SKILLS Learning to play an instrument can affect language and reading skills, but it can also improve “left-brain” skills that are not necessarily considered creative. Music education can improve a child’s mathematical learning and nurture recall and retention skills. Plus, learning music can boost 8 August 2019

STRENGTHENS SOCIAL AND 3. MUSIC PERSONAL SKILLS Most public schools have music programs, so children can learn to play instruments alongside their peers. Kids in a group music class must learn to work together and be mindful of others. If one child is playing too slowly or too loudly, they learn to adjust. When everyone is working towards a single goal like a special show, practicing and making the most of rehearsals is important. Collaboration, communication, and teamwork are essential for taking music lessons with others. If you are considering the benefits of music lessons for your child, you may be wondering what age is appropriate to start. PBS points out that kids can be immersed in musical environments soon after birth, through informal experiences like playing games, dancing or singing. Age’s six to nine are best for formal lessons where the goal is to learn an instrument. With these lessons, kids will understand that learning an instrument is a lesson in delayed gratification. It takes hours, months, or years of practice to reach a specific goal. These lessons teach patience, discipline, attentiveness, and perseverance. Caring for your own instrument and practicing regularly also teaches responsibility and time management.

BOOSTS 4. MUSIC CONFIDENCE Although learning an instrument takes lots of practice, reaching a goal can bring about a huge surge of confidence. Lessons take time, and your child will face productive criticism on their technique. Figuring out how to accept constructive feedback and change for the better can boost self-confidence. Kids understand that no one is perfect and that learning a complex new skill like playing an instrument will not be perfect, either. Overcoming criticism to succeed can build positive self-esteem.

A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO EDUCATION AT STRATFORD SCHOOL Stratford School values skills that music lessons teach, like teamwork, social intelligence, and willingness to learn. If you want to enroll your child in a program that values these skills and encourages kids to explore their interests in STEM, music, and more, schedule a tour or inquire about our programs today!

Medicare Part A & B Sign Up Periods and Pitfalls to Avoid By Stephanie Frisch

When you’re first eligible for Medicare, you have a 7-month Initial Enrollment Period to sign up for Part A and/or Part B. For example, if you’re eligible for Medicare when you turn 65, you can sign up during the 7-month period that begins 3 months before you turn 65.

I

f you aren’t automatically enrolled (if you’re already taking Social Security prior to age 65 you will be automatically enrolled into Medicare) you can sign up for free Part A (if you or your spouse paid into it while working via taxes for a total of 10 years) any time during or after your Initial Enrollment Period starts. Enrollment in Part A is no longer automatic because eligibility for Medicare occurs at age 65, while the Social Security retirement age is no longer 65. Your coverage start date will depend on when you sign up. If you have to buy Part A and/or Part B, you can only sign up during a valid enrollment period. Important to note! If you wait until the month you turn 65 (or the 3 months after you turn 65) to enroll, your Part B coverage will be delayed. This could cause a gap in your coverage. In most cases, if you don’t sign up for Medicare Part B when you’re first eligible, you’ll have to pay a late enrollment penalty. You'll have to pay this penalty for as long as you have Part B and could have a gap in your health coverage. An exception to this would be if you have employer group health coverage (larger than 20 employees). IMPORTANT FACT! COBRA and retiree health plans aren't considered coverage based on current employment. You're not eligible for a Special Enrollment Period when that coverage ends. The consequences are a lifetime Part B late enrollment penalty and a gap in your medical coverage. May 2019 2019 | sorbetsocal.com 12 2 August

If you have a Health Savings Account (HSA) with a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) based on your or your spouse’s current employment, you may be eligible for an SEP (Special enrollment period). To avoid a tax penalty, you should stop contributing to your HSA at least 6 months before you apply for Medicare. You can withdraw money from your HSA after

you enroll in Medicare to help pay for medical expenses (like deductibles, premiums, coinsurance or copayments). Existing Medicare beneficiaries, the Annual Enrollment period is just around the corner; plan information will be released October 1st and the enrollment period is October 15th – December 7th, with any new plan selection taking effect Jan. 1st.

on my skin helped me clear up my acne.” Pharmaceutical grade salt - not Himalayan (more for eating than breathing) - seems like an April fool’s joke. But Amy’s grand opening this past spring was no prank, and she’s loved seeing skeptics become believers. “Some of my clients suffer from terrible allergies or asthma, and have found such relief. It’s affordable and convenient, and it’s great for all ages so the whole family can use it together.”

Elemental Healing with Coastal Salt

Dry Salt Therapy By Jody Robinson

umbers 11 and 17 on the Periodic Table of Elements are pretty important to Amy Boriack. They have been for a long time now. Not separately, of course. Together. Representing a 1:1 ratio of sodium and chloride ions, sodium chloride is Amy’s bread and butter. Or, more approximately: her table salt. Introduced to the concept of halotherapy by a friend, Amy and her daughter sought out the treatment a few years back to help kick a lingering cold. “Sure enough, a couple of sessions sent it down the road, and since then with regular use, we’ve managed to avoid many bugs altogether.” Amy was sold. Avoiding the more unnatural over-the-counter remedies and finding the therapy interesting was all it took. In business now for a few months, Amy opened the doors to Coastal Salt with high hopes of minimizing her client’s stress, opening up their airways, and clearing out bacteria and inflammation from their skin. 14 August 2019

Family is first for Amy, and when she started doing salt therapy with her daughter, it just wasn’t convenient to the location of their home. “As far as I could tell, there weren’t resources for this type of healing in South Orange County.” After more research, she decided it would be an incredible experience bringing halotherapy to the community. Backed by more than 50 years of scientific research, halotherapy originated in Europe. Well documented in clinical trials in St. Petersburg, Russia, and most recently the New England Journal of Medicine, halotherapy has been long hailed as the leading aid in the naturopathic treatment of cystic fibrosis.

When I was younger, my Mom loved to read me the book “If You Give A Mouse A Cookie.” The plot essentially revolves around an ever-growing list of to-do’s that had to be accomplished, all set into motion by the simple act of giving a mouse a cookie. This tale came back to me recently when I purchased a new television at Best Buy.

W

hat was a simple shopping trip ended up being an adult’s version of that circular tale. If you give a grownup a television, they’ll have to measure their wall. When they measure the wall, they’ll realize they may actually 24 August 2019

have room for a bigger television. When they buy the bigger television, they’ll find out they have no idea how to mount it to the wall. When they start mounting it to the wall, they’ll see that the power outlets are all in the wrong places. When they realize

the outlets need to be moved, they’ll call an electrician. (This could go on forever.) Luckily for clients who have been on the receiving end of ReelTime’s patient, intelligent, and personalized

service, the rabbit hole of home automation doesn’t have to swallow you entirely. With the help of their independent certified Control4 dealer, it’s easy to update your home without upending your entire life. After all, the true luxury of an integrated entertainment system is really dependent on its ability to deliver seamless entertainment. By placing every control at your fingertips, the team at ReelTime helps homeowners manage everything from how brightly lit your family room is, to your streaming devices - all with a single remote. And best yet? You can control your whole home from the comfort of your couch- even seeing who is at the front door, without ever leaving your seat. Simple, clean, and uncluttered. And on the home entertainment front … when you started planning for your ultimate home theater set-up and sound system, could you find the right media cabinetry for your particular space – cabinetry that wouldn’t catch on fire from the heat of the equipment, or that would simply look good in the room? Did you understand half of what the televisions, receivers and other devices could

do, and did you have anyone to hold your hand to make sure you weren’t overspending for what you wanted?

and send you off to figure it out at home. That’s what they do. And that’s all they do.

Big box retailers, the professed champions of value, are happy to sell you any home theater and sound equipment you think you might like,

If you want the home theater system that you envision, seek the services of Skip Myers and his team of experienced professionals at ReelTime to take you from start to finish for the home theater or sound system of your dreams. “Usually there is a part of the job that you find you just can’t do by yourself,” says Skip, who has overseen the design and installation of thousands of home theater and sound systems over the course of 40-plus years in the business. “You get your brand new television home, you’re so excited, then you realize you need to move an outlet or none of the cabinets you can find will fit your space. We’re here to make sure you get the equipment that will give you what you want and the system that will work with that equipment, without leaving you to fend for yourself.” August 2019 25

“You can buy everything you want to, but if you can’t operate it, what’s the point?” he says. “There’s the television, DVD and Blue-ray; there’s the receiver, there’s Apple TV… it’s all great, but how do you get them to work together? We’re big advocates of the universal remote. Not everyone knows how to get the most out of their systems with one powerful remote – they’re not expensive, but the best ones are computer-based. We’ll set that up for you so you’re getting the most out of your custom system.”

We’re here to make sure you get the equipment that will give you what you want and the system that will work with that equipment, without leaving you to fend for yourself.

It’s easy to assume that personal service is expensive, but a conversation with Skip and the experts at ReelTime is free. Ultimately, in planning your purchases for the right outcome, you’re likely to save money while avoiding chilling setbacks. The only chilling you want to be doing is in front of your fantasy home theater system.

Skip opened the doors at ReelTime in 1983. Today, the technicians and designers that Skip assigns to clients are all ReelTime employees, knowledgeable in all home theater and sound technologies. First, they work closely with you to determine what you’re looking for. Then they custom design every aspect of the project, from wiring to custom-built cabinets, frames, or built-in wall designs. Finally, licensed, in-house contractors install your entertainment system with care and precision. There are a couple of things that people may not think about when they embark upon the road to their own home entertainment system. “You need to think about your home theater goals,” says Skip. “You don’t have to do everything at once – you can do it bit by bit – but if you know where you’re going, you’ll save money and when it’s all said and done, you’ll have exactly what you want and what you will actually use. We’re here to help you determine your goals.” Skip is also an advocate for getting what you’ll use, which is part of the design and planning process. 26 August 2019

Allegretto Vineyard Resort

Sweet Summer Escape

to Paso Robles’ Wine Country

By Jody Robinson When I picture a rest stop, I imagine 18-wheel trucks, a grimy bathroom, and the last of a bag of road-trip snacks. Not the rolling hills of Paso Robles. Green like Ireland in the spring, and tawny golden in the summer months, the pass of the oaks, as it was named by natives who settled the area before the Spanish ever set foot upon the Camino Real, offered rest for travelers of the historic trail. Franciscan priests from the neighboring mission in San Miguel were responsible for the first mineral baths in the area, and so it became a lush respite on a dusty trail. 28 August 2019

Located on the Salinas River north of San Luis Obispo, Paso Robles hosts the California Mid-State Fair, and is known widely for its ranches, vineyards, and orchards. Today, it produces some of the finest wines and olive oils in the state and is home to more than 200 wineries and fine restaurants making it an exciting destination for any oenophile. Just over three hours from Los Angeles, and three more to San Francisco, there’s very little reason to stay away. From hop-on-hop-off wine tasting tours to Hearst Castle to the Studios on the Park gift shops and more. Beautiful city parks (and waterparks!) await if you’re visiting with the whole family. If it’s a quiet weekend away that you’re looking for, search no further than the Allegretto Vineyard Resort (allegrettovineyardresort.com).

A drone is the only way to capture the full scope of this pristine gem, tucked into the heart of wine country on 20 sprawling acres of vineyards and olive and fruit orchards on Paso Robles’ idyllic east side. From the ground, walk through a peaceful sanctuary inspired by Mediterranean architecture and the Italian “dolce vita.” Drawing from wine country’s original heritage in the rolling splendor of Tuscany and the south of France, the resort feels like a sweet plunge into refreshing waters. Lovely gardens, a gorgeous Tuscan-style courtyard, beautifully appointed rooms, relaxing cabanas at sparkling outdoor pools, a French-inspired Abbey and labyrinth sound garden are among the many amenities designed to give each guest a luxury experience they’ll never forget. Relax in the Spa as you Cello Ristorante rejuvenate body and mind, take a walk around the vineyard and celebrate in the event spaces; including but not limited to the Veneto Ballroom. If you’re a foodie, walk through the organic gardens with Chef Justin, or simply indulge at Cello Ristorante and Bar. The local bounty lands fresh upon your table in a celebration of every farmer, rancher, chef, and server that makes each dish possible. Combining both domestic and international flavors, Chef Picard marries only the freshest ingredients with artisan cookery. Hop on a tandem bike and ride off into the sunset: at a rest stop you’re not likely going to want to leave behind.

SIP, SAVOR, CELEBRATE DAOU VINEYARDS My husband and I initially discovered DAOU wine when a friend brought over a bottle for a gathering at our home several months ago. Over the years, this friend has introduced us to several pretty spectacular varietals and DAOU’s 2016 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon was no exception. So when we realized that DAOU Vineyards and Winery (daouvineyards.com) was located in Paso Robles, we were excited to indulge in its offerings firsthand.

Standing alone at an elevation of 2,200 feet in the heart of the breathtaking Adelaide District (10 minutes from downtown), DAOU’s Wine Tasting experience more than delivered. The reserve and estate-tier vintages (our favorite was the 2017 DAOU Unbound, which the web site describes as “Petite SIrah, Tannat and Tempranillo Blend shows an inky, violet, aubergine color with a warm, rich nose of blueberry pie, boysenberry jam and crushed mulberries. Cedar shavings with graphite and dried flowers are accentuated by vanilla creme highlights and a subtle hint of mint.” As a novice aficionado, I just know it was lovely and further enhanced by the beautiful mountain overlook terrace, cozy fireside, European-inspired furnishings and impeccable grounds with sweeping panoramic vineyard views. Only Good Times, All the Time By Jody Robinson

We tend to be a bit spoiled when it comes to weather in California, especially the southern residents. Year-round, it typically doesn’t drop below 50, hovering even in December in the high 60’s or low 70’s.

W

hich means we can do more outside when we aren’t stuck in the snow. Which means we’re more fun. Objectively. Harrah’s has just taken it one step further. Already the home of a worldclass resort and casino, the #1 spot to indulge is Funner than ever. Officially.

California’s most exciting new city, Funner (visitfunner.com), is on the map and ready to greet you with its award winning selection of restaurants, the first swim-up bar in SoCal, and even a 30 August 2019

400-foot lazy river. Funner even has a mayor: Hollywood’s recently inaugurated Rob Riggle. Now, fun literally is a destination, and it isn’t that far off. Tucked between San Diego and Los Angeles, you can indulge onsite or head out for adventure. Only 4 miles from Hill Top Winery and just down the road from La Jolla Zip Zoom, you can get from pampered to Palomar Mountain in a jiffy. There’s only one hotel in this quirky concept destination and it’s a doozy.

Harrah’s Resort SoCal boasts 1,087 luxury rooms, 22 wellness rooms and suites, eight restaurants, a trio of pools (and 23 poolside cabanas), eight hot tubs, the aforementioned 400-foot lazy river, fully equipped fitness center AND 1,700 slot machines and 60 table games. Seriously, this resort means it when it advertises that it "isn’t your ordinary escape” whether its guests prefer to pull up a lounge chair, a bar stool or an inner tube - there’s literally something for everyone. What’s your idea of a poolside paradise? I think it just might look like a trifecta of crystal clear pools, lazy river that “plays on repeat,” a range of sunning options and SoCal’s first swim-up bar - replete with live entertainment poolside nightly Thursdays - Sundays.

A foodie? Grab-and-go delicacies or the delightful elegance of linen tablecloths - with bountiful options designed to please event the pickiest eaters. For the former - Earl of Sandwich, Robeks Fresh Juices & Smoothies, Smash Burger and Starbucks - and for the latter Fiore Steak + Seafood (winner of Wine Spectator’s “Award of Excellence” 10 years running) and everything in between. KJ Chinese Restaurant, ‘ritas cantina brings Baja to you “one bite at a time,” Cafe serves up casual fare and Buffet is spelled like it sounds: a world tour for your taste buds.

tion live entertainment? Aside from poolside pursuits, Harrah’s Resort SoCal showcases a monthly event calendar packed with comedy and concerts that will surely pack the house. Upcoming performances include The Wallflowers, Experience Hendrix, Chicago, Don’t Look Back (Boston Tribute) and the Eddie B: I’m Already Professionally Developed Tour.

The bar scene is not to be trifled with - Spiked’s mixologists blend classic recipes with a signature twist and Corked offer a craft beer list ensured to impress any hop head. Did I men-

Add to all this the newly renovated Spa at Harrah’s, on-site barber shop, and SR76 Beerworks, home of the original Native American owned brewery that offers a little history with every taste. Named after the original trail the tribe migrated on, the beers cultivated within showcase the history and agriculture of the region. What could be funner? Come see for yourself. August 2019 31

Destination: Napa Valley By Jody Robinson

dramatic views, world-class resorts and restaurants.

I was at a bookstore the other day, best sellers dotting the front shelves. In the back, over by the kids books were a series of board games, dolls, and puzzles. A surprising number of the puzzles depicted scenes from California: cities and beaches, redwoods and wineries. A great many I recognized were from Napa Valley, famous for its picturesque wineries (grand scale, boutique and everything in between) and renowned varietals, and yet equally famous for its

My husband and I are lucky to have family who live in the region so weekend getaways are super easy and require little excuse or forward planning. About an hour from the Sacramento Airport, the end of August and into September is a ideal time to visit - when the summer heat tapers into fall, and the sun’s latitude slants just so across the rolling hills of fertile soil. Like many visitors and locals alike, we love to explore the offerings of both well-established and up-and-coming

Italics Wine Growers

wineries; some to drink, some just to stroll the grounds. Understated and unbelievable, Napa Valley a must-experience destination for any and all.

NAPA VALLEY WINE TRAIN If you’re looking for a way back to a simpler and more elegant frame of mind while on vacation, step onto the platform of the Napa Valley Wine Train, and come aboard for a trip to the past, through the present’s most “expensive and famous farm real estate in the country.” Built in 1864 to take travelers to Calistoga, the Napa Valley Wine Train (winetrain.com) is a three-hour tour from downtown Napa to St. Helena and back traveling along 36 miles of track to roll by 26 different wineries at about 10 miles an hour. Traveling through nothing but incredible scenery, the train features a Gourmet Express multi-course meal on board, with car service in either the lounge or dining car. Meals are served at tables laid out with white linen, beautiful china and silverware. Our culinary adventure began with a selection of artisan cheeses and finely cut meats, followed by a choice of grilled and roasted beef tenderloin and the Chef’s fresh selection of seafood. Departing mid-morning or early evening, the trail rocks and rails from Oak Knoll to Rutherford. Four kitchens and local produce combine

to a decadent conclusion. Every dish is made to order; and the ambience is certainly served up with each course.

ITALICS WINE GROWERS My mom used to tell me “God made dirt, and dirt don’t hurt.” I’m sure it was within the context of some scrape or road rash I had as a kid, but as an adult, finding that the most intriguing part of my wine habit is the soil that the grapes came from definitely reminds me of my mother. At Italics Wine Growers (italics winegrowers. com), they’re approaching grapes from the ground up. “Soil is what it is, and there’s not a lot you can do about it. Here in Coombsville, the soils are a result of volcanic eruptions that occurred some three to five million years ago.” And we’re drinking to that today!

Italics Wine Growers it has to be a room. Not when you can walk among the vines … to learn firsthand about vine spacing, trellising and pruning - things that affect vigor, yield and quality. Or if you prefer, you can take a “behindthe-scenes” tour of the 16,000 squarefoot cave. Nothing illuminates a winegrower’s art more

than a cave tour and tasting where our party savored current releases and library wines accompanied with seasonal pairings of local cheese and charcuterie. Taylor and his team have extended their enthusiasm to everyone who has experienced Italics since its inception in 2014. It may be one of the newer wineries on the map in Napa, but the flavor delivers about a million years of history, down to the last drop.

Napa Valley Wine Train

A lot of factors influence the taste and body of that lovely libation, but the parent material is all the minerals, plants, and microorganisms you walk on. Those who walk the walk at Italics came down a long road to get here all the way from the American Southeast. Texas to be exact. Taylor Martin, his wife, their 2 year-old, (and one to come soon!) live on the property and along with their carefully cultivated team of fellow oenophiles, and can’t get enough of the winery where Taylor will be the first to tell guests that “a tasting room is a place to sip and swirl, meet new people and make new friends, but there’s no reason August 2019 41

Smarter, not Harder

By the Align Pilates Team

Time and time again, it’s been proven that exercise is critically important to our overall health. The list of benefits is long and convincing. But with data up the wazoo, mainstream media hype and so many righteous claims, it can be hard to know how exactly to approach exercising.

A

t Align Pilates and Yoga, our approach to fitness, and your overall health is rooted in the belief of working smarter not harder. It’s not about the number of calories burned, six-pack abs and chiseled muscles. It’s about seeking balance and establishing a foundation to keep you moving free and easy as the inevitable hands of time march ever forward. “If your spine is inflexibly stiff at 30, you are old; if it is completely flexible at 60, you are young,” famously said Joseph Pilates.

Your spine and overall health are directly correlated to how young you move and feel. One can be ripped out, washboard abs, but unfortunately, they are pretty much useless

42 August 2019

if they can’t roll you up into a sitting position. The muscles that create that so-called “six-pack” are the most superficial part of abdominals and only a fraction of the core. To be able to roll up into sitting position takes an immense amount of coordination from the whole body, not just strong rectus abdominals (aka “six-pack abs”). It’s this coordination of flexibility, strength, and finesse and attunement to the spine that sets the method of Pilates and yoga apart from other fitness ideologies. One of the hallmarks of Pilates and yoga is the ongoing pursuit of balance within the body. It’s important to achieve a balance between strength and flexibility. What is the point of having super-strong muscles

if the end results bound your joints, and range of motion suffers? Balance between right side and left sides of the body is also vital to overall health. When certain muscle groups become overly develop and others become weak and undeveloped, it places an undue strain on the skeletal system, generating postural deviations that open the door for a gambit of back and joint dysfunction. Also, a balance of power in the body is needed. Sometimes we need to exert max force, and at other times we need finite control of our bodies. In one session of Pilates or yoga, all these attributes will be addressed creating an overall stronger, more balanced, coordinated body. Instead of worrying about calories burned and lifting more weights, join Align today and start balancing the body in a smarter fashion, for a more youthful you tomorrow.

Align Pilates is located at 31896 Plaza Drive, Suite E6 in San Juan Capistrano. For info, call (949) 481-3577 or visit AlignPilatesCenter.com

Pets of the Month Two year old Kona is a sweet little guy with lots of love to give. Initially very shy and scared, Kona is learning how to trust and has become quite the affectionate lap dog. He gets along with other small dogs and wouldn’t mind another dog as a companion.

This handsome little guy is Keanu, a two year old sweetheart looking for his forever family. While he loves playing in the yard with his small dog pals, Keanu’s favorite place to be is in your arms. He is very affectionate and loves a good snuggle or belly rub. Could you be his perfect match?

Three month old Enrique is just one of the many adorable kittens looking for their purrfect homes. He is playful, loving, and an energetic bundle of fun. Enrique and his kitten friends are ready for adoption at the shelter and can’t wait to meet you!

ME

Bubba is a ginger-haired cutie now available for adoption. Found living outdoors with his two siblings, he is still learning the many joys of everyday cat life such as fun toys and soft beds. However with the help of his fosters and shelter volunteers, there’s no doubt that Bubba will be top of his kitten class in no time at all.

iven the cost of medical insurance these days for those under age 65, many of you have selected a “High deductible Health Plan” in an effort to save money. If you are turning 65, you should stop contributing to your HSA 6 months prior to your Part A&B effective date (the month of your 65th birthday. If you are over age 65 and you have a Health Savings Account (HSA) with a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) based on your or your spouse’s current employment, you may be eligible for an SEP (Special enrollment period). To avoid a tax penalty, you should stop contributing to your HSA at least 6 months before you apply for Medicare. You can withdraw money from your HSA after you enroll in Medicare to help pay for medical expenses (like deductibles, premiums, coinsurance or copayments). Existing Medicare beneficiaries, the Annual Enrollment period is just around the corner; plan information will be released October 1st and the enrollment period is October 15th – December 7th, with any new plan selection taking effect Jan. 1st. oxy coatings can also be removed during this same process. “Despite the fact that Coatings Industry requires concrete to at least be diamond ground before installing a new coating system, many of my competitors will install their coatings right over raw or pressure washed concrete just to save a few bucks - I will never do that” says Paul.

It’s Not Epoxy, It’s SpartaFlex!

F

or nearly 40 years, southern California homeowners have used Epoxy for garage and industrial floor coating projects despite its tendency to yellow, it’s soft and easy to scratch surface and it’s tendency to be permanently damaged by the hot, high performance tires found on most cars in the OC area. Today OC homeowners don’t have to settle for Epoxy and all of its flaws anymore. SpartaFlex is an advanced, next generation 100% solids polyaspartic floor coating that gives your garage a beautiful finish that is 3x harder than epoxy, resists yellowing while also resisting permanent damage from hot tires. Perhaps best of all, SpartaFlex comes with a much better warranty than Epoxy.

Perkins Custom Coatings has been installing SpartaFlex on OC garage floors for nearly 12 years and has completed over 8,000 floors during that period of time. Its CEO and owner, Paul Frankel is considered by many to be the most knowledgeable contractor in the local market. “Unlike many of our competitors, we strive to do an onsite assessment including a moisture test for every floor coating project we install and instead of using the ‘one size fits all’ approach, we develop a coating solution that we believe will last for decades not just for a few years.” Perkins uses only the most advanced surface preparation methods available and will either diamond grind or shot blast every floor that he installs. Old, failing, yellowed ep-

Perkins also is known for its professional and unique approach to repairing concrete cracks. “Anyone can slap some crack repair paste to cosmetically fix a crack” says Paul. A year later, when the concrete moves again and damages their brand new floor coating, the devastated homeowner will learn that this damage is not covered by the typical Epoxy warranty. “We are the only company that I know of that uses a ‘structural crack repair’ technique to fix cracks. The process is so effective we can offer our customers a warranty that can cover future damage from cracks!” says Paul. After the surface prep is completed, a very effective moisture control primer is applied to the concrete. “This is extremely important” says Paul because for many homes built in Socal before 2005, elevated moisture vapor levels in the garage concrete can have a detrimental impact on floor coatings. Paul does a fast and non-destructive moisture test for every one of the pre-2005 homes he visits and develops a unique installation plan for each home. For newer homes, Paul and his crew can use a basic primer that dries a bit faster allowing installation of a garage floor in as little as one day! The color chips that give the Perkins floor its legendary appearance are sandwiched between this primer and finish coat. Perkins carries the widest selection of colors and sizes in the market and uses a ‘full chip broadcast’, not a partial sprinkling of chips like many of its competitors. “The full chip broadcast gives the floor a consistent appearance and makes the floor much more durable and helps hide dirt better than the partial broadcast finish” says Paul. Finally, Perkins installs the SpartaFlex polyaspartic finish coat and the finished garage comes to life. “Epoxy & SpartaFlex floor coatings are virtually identical in appearance when they are first installed” says Paul. “However, when you will really begin to appreciate your SpartaFlex floor is a few months down the road when you start to see problems develop with your Epoxy floor. If there was a better material on the market, I would be selling it, but there isn’t and that is why we love selling SpartaFlex.”

For more information or to see for yourself the advantages of SpartaFlex over Epoxy, you can call Perkins Custom Coatings, at 866-330-1DAY (1329) or visit their informative website at www.perkinscustomcoatings.com. 50 August 2019

Constructing Personal Healing with the Ultimate Healing Bathtub By Jody Robinson

The thing you should probably know before you begin reading is that you don’t know much. There are experts, and then there are specialists like Mike Marohnic and Jay Benscoter.

that most walk-in tubs hold between 70-100 gallons of water. But most residential water heaters hold 50-60 gallons. So before you’re done filling the tub, you’re out of hot water.” The list goes on and on, literally overflowing with reasons as to why walk-ins can be more of a danger than a help to those in need. The Elevated “fills in 2 minutes (depending on water pressure), and uses approximately 20

o matter how hard you try, you just don’t know as much about building or bathtubs as the two of them. That’s ok, because they’re here to help. In fact, they’ve both been helping folks build better lives since the 70’s. Mike’s father-in-law put him to work in ‘75. He owned Jim Johnston Concrete out of San Clemente. Thirteen years later, Mike received a B license from the California Contractors State License Board, and started a sole proprietorship, called California Framers. Moving away from production carpentry was a no-brainer. His immediate responsibilities included estimating, scheduling, coordination, and consulting. From beginning to end, ground to roofing. In ‘95, California Framers received a C17 license and changed its name to Custom Windows and Remodeling. In ‘99, they incorporated to Maroh Enterprises, and changed its DBA to California Doors and Windows. Which is where our story picks up. “Cal Doors and Windows recently became the exclusive dealer and distributor for Elevate Bathtubs in Orange County, San Diego County, Riverside County, San Bernardino County, and Hawaii. We hire some of the best installers in the industry, and have exclusive, unique products that we can help you take from market to install.” Putting people first helps everyone achieve a better quality of life. Increasing lifespan, be it property or personnel, is a goal of Jay’s - and where the two collide. “I’ve been able to meet and work with some great colleagues who have become my friends and influenced my life.” One of those August 2019 2019 | sorbetsocal.com 56 2 May

influences is the Ultimate Healing Bathtub. Easy entry and exit from a wheelchair or walker, the tubs drain in 10-15 seconds, and only takes 1lb of force or less to open and close the automatic latching door. “You know, when I started, I thought there has to be a way to better help these people,” Jay Benscoter notes. “I was selling these walk-in bathtubs for elderly and handicapped individuals and was discovering flaw after flaw.” “Walk-ins don’t fit in a normal doorway. So you have to move plumbing, and doors, corners; even hallways to attempt to get the tub in the bathroom to begin with! Toilets and vanities go next, and then have to be replaced, repained, and refinished.” Beyond that, the drain line and P-Trap may have to be moved to the other side of the bathtub. In the industry, we call that ‘reverse the plumbing’ - which would require jackhammering out a section, running the new 2” P-Trap along with the line and patching/repairing the concrete. “The big companies don’t tell you

gallons of water. There is no need to cut floors or remove plumbing. The tub comes in two pieces so it is easily maneuvered through the house and doorways.” Caregivers can stand instead of kneeling, and the tub is actually deep enough to soak torso, shoulders and neck without feeling like you were putting yourself at risk. “We’ve been working on this tub for five years. You’d think it would be an easy undertaking, but it has been the exact opposite. Finally, we found one that worked. The tub has been tested by UPC, IAPMO, ASME and the CSA Group. Each has had a tub and have run it 24/7, 365 to simulate 25 to 30 years of usage to try to find failures. Elevate passed them all with flying colors.” You don’t have to be a specialist to see what’s really being elevated: your life. GORILLA GRASS & MIRAGE PGA Putting Greens

TM ®

By Jody Robinson

O

wning your own home is a huge part of the American dream – but it’s not just owning a home … it’s the pride of ownership that extends to the care you put into the way the property looks – inside and out. The front lawn is one of the first things about your home that people see, and a tidy, lush-looking lawn not only adds to your home’s curb appeal, but also adds to the overall aesthetic appeal of your neighborhood. But “lush” might be quite a stretch to achieve when conserving water. That is, unless you call GORILLA GRASSTM – providers of the highest quality synthetic lawn grass for both residential and commercial customers.

general, by switching to artificial lawn, the savings in water consumption amount to about 48 gallons per square foot, per year!” When we spoke with Denis, it was immediately evident that he is extremely proud of his product, but we were equally impressed by personal testimonials of his many happy customers like Mike and Shannon Wells who raved “Denis has done an incredible job with an incredible product. The kids play constantly on the grass, and we will be adding a new family member (a puppy) without any worries. We cannot say enough about how happy we are with the product as well as with Denis and his team.” Customer Dr. Dante Toriello agrees with the Wells’ assessment and adds that the work was so good, his lawn had become “uniform, maintenance free and beautiful.” His American dream had been fulfilled, and in Dante’s words, thanks to GORILLA GRASSTM, his home had now become “the showplace in the neighborhood.”

For our part, my husband and I were tired of looking at a barren patch of dirt in our backyard and I hesitate to call what was struggling to grow there “grass.” We decided to install a synthetic lawn and called on GORILLA GRASSTM owner Denis Weber and his professional team to try to make the area look better and have it be a more useable space for the kids could play. Serving Orange County since 1998, Denis has continually grown the company year after year – a testament to the quality of his product and service. GORILLA GRASSTM provides two types of grass: Synthetic Lawngrass and MIRAGE Professional Putting Greens. Synthetic grass can help you cut down significantly on your water usage and judging by the results we achieved, you don’t have to sacrifice beauty for cost-savings. “Synthetic or artificial lawn grass is so sophisticated today, that is very closely imitates real live grass,” says Denis. “In 58 August 2019

According to Denis, the ways in which GORILLA GRASSTM simulates real grass are numerous: “its weight (double the average at 143oz per square yard), its high density, its extra softness and plushness, its resiliency, its height (up to 2.4”, whereas most lawns are 1 1/2” to 1 3/4”)”, and its special diamond-shaped fibers - which help make GORILLA GRASSTM more resilient and more realistic. GORILLA GRASSTM is just like real grass, only Much Better!!
