I’m not sure that I’ve ever associated the word ethical with a law office before. Maybe with an animal shelter, or a non-profit dedicated to planting trees.
While ethical business tends to be fruitful, feelings of fairness, honesty, and equality don’t necessarily go hand in hand with child custody cases or marriage dissolutions.
Six years ago, that changed for Elisabeth Donovan. As a young attorney, she worked for a large firm, taking on case

I was in the zone. Heart pumping, uber-focused, lost in the moment. Halfway through a box of Rosemary and Olive Oil Triscuits with cheese and a glass of wine, Outlander streaming on the television, kids down for the night.
When the episode ended though, I looked down and my lap was covered in crumbs, wine glass empty beside me: and at the end of the couch was my yoga mat. Unused for weeks now, always some excuse or another as to why I didn’t have the energy, or the time, or the money to get to a class and shape up, like I’d been intending to for months.
Over lunch recently, a couple of my mom friends and I grudgingly conceded that it had been too long since we really looked at how we were taking care of ourselves, instead, spending time on fruitless pursuits (like binge watching our favorite Netflix shows) that threatened to sink us deeper and deeper into the couch cushions.
We’ve all tried our hand at gyms and at-home workout programs over the years, but nothing really seemed to stick. How Can I Tell If I Have Skin Cancer?

There are three main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Because each has many different appearances, it is important to know the early warning signs.
Look especially for change of any kind. Do not ignore a suspicious spot simply because it does not hurt. Skin cancers may be painless, but dangerous all the same. If you notice one or more of the warning signs, see a board-certified dermatologist right away, preferably one who specializes in diseases of the skin.
ACTINIC KERATOSIS
An actinic keratosis (AK) is a crusty, scaly growth caused by damage from exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. An AK is considered a precancer because if left alone, it could develop into a skin cancer. AKs are the product of a lifetime accumulation of UV damage and typically appear on areas most commonly exposed sun, such as the backs of the hands, forearms, face, neck, and scalp.
BASAL CELL CARCINOMA
Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most frequently occurring form of all cancers, with more than 4 million cases of diagnosed in the U.S. each year. BCCs may look like open sores, red patches, pink growths, shiny bumps, or scars. Any skin lesion that doesn’t heal, or bleeds with even gentle trauma, such as drying with a towel, is concerning for a BCC.
SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA
Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells arising in the epidermis, the skin’s outermost layer. SCCs often look like scaly red patches, crusty bumps, warts, or elevated growths with a central depression. SCCs may appear suddenly and some forms are tender to touch. They can become disfiguring and sometimes deadly if allowed to grow. More than 1 million cases of SCC are diagnosed each year in the U.S., which translates to about 115 cases diagnosed every hour. Incidence has increased by 200 percent in the past three decades in the U.S., and more than 15,000 Americans die each year from this type of skin cancer.
MELANOMA
Melanoma is a very dangerous form of skin cancer. Melanoma is caused mainly by intense, occasional UV exposure (frequently leading to sunburn), especially in those who are
genetically predisposed to the disease. An estimated 178,560 cases of melanoma are diagnosed in the U.S. each year and is fatal for an estimated 9,320 of these patients. Fortunately, if melanoma is recognized and treated early, it is almost always curable.
WHAT PATIENTS NEED TO KNOW
1. Everyone needs to perform a self-skin exam once a month.
2. Melanoma can appear anywhere on the skin, including the palms/soles, under your nails, and places...for most, have never seen the light of day (genitalia). For this reason, it is important to look everywhere. Lock the bathroom door, get out a hand mirror, and check, it could save your life.
3. What to look for: ABCDEs, and an ugly duckling
A - Asymmetry: If I draw a line down the middle, do the sides match?
B - Border: Is there a nice crisp border, or does the mole melt into the surrounding skin?
C - Color: Moles should be one color, one shade of brown. Is there a variety of shades or additional colors, such as black, red, white, or blue?
D - Diameter: Any mole larger than 6mm, ie the head of a pencil eraser, has a higher risk of becoming melanoma.
E - Evolution: Has it changed?
F - The Ugly Duckling Sign: Most people have a “signature mole,” their own personal mole appearance and architecture. Is there a mole that seems different from all the others?
4. Everyone needs a full body skin exam by a board-certified dermatologist once a year, more frequently if you have a family history of skin cancer, a personal history of skin cancer, or live in an area with substantial sunshine.

Plastic bottles are made from petroleum that is known to cause innumerable damage to our health and the environment. Try using a reusable water bottle, it’ll be a habit before you know it.
4. EAT HEALTHY
Try to consume foods that are less processed and produced through natural methods using appropriate fertilization and pest control techniques. Avoid foods using pesticides and chemicals. An addition, eat a balance diet of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats.
5. DO A GOOD DEED
Do a good deed to break your prejudices, to make the world a better place to live. See how you will change your life by changing someone else’s.
6. EAT WITH THOSE YOU LOVE
Eat a family dinner with your loved ones in a room where, if possible, there are no smart phones and TV. Talk about your day. Listen to each other. Research shows that family dinners with loved ones have a psychologically positive effect on overall wellbeing.
7. SLEEP AT 10 PM
Sleep is a critical process during which our body regulates everything and repairs and heals itself. It slows down ageing and protects us from diseases.

Q: How long has LaSara Medical Group been in existence and what does it specialize in?
A: Since January 2018. We specialize in Men’s sexual health providing treatment for erectile dysfunction and peyronies disease.
We’ve treated more men in southern California with focused shockwaves than anyone else around. On a daily basis, we have 14-18 men coming through our doors in each location. We use the exact machinery and protocol that’s been clinically studied and proven.
Q: What is low intensity focused shockwave therapy, is it a new treatment and how does it work?
A: The treatment is relatively new to the United States, but not to the world. It’s been studied and used for 15 years, originally in Europe (Switzerland, Germany, UK, Denmark, etc.), Canada, Asia (Japan, Korea, India), Australia, and most recently here in the US in the last couple of years.
The majority of men who experience ED have a vascular disorder or blood flow disorder. What happens is their blood vessels have prematurely hardened, there is plaque that builds up, or they have other medical conditions that attack the vascular system, such as Diabetes. When this happens, a man loses his ability for blood to easily travel into his penis allowing for an erection to occur.
We use low intensity focused shock waves to trigger the body to grow new blood vessels into the penis. The shockwaves create a small micro trauma. When this happens, new blood vessels begin to grow throughout a man’s penis. This is the process of neovascularization. Over time, the body miraculously repairs and heals the countless blood vessels damaged and prematurely hardened by the accumulation of plaque. As the plaque becomes eliminated, more and more blood vessels grow back... The ultimate goal is get a man back to achieving erections
naturally and without the use of medication, like Viagra or Cialis.
Q: How do you determine if a prospective patient will benefit from treatment?
A: The process starts with a complete medical evaluation and history to determine whether a vascular disorder is the cause of a prospective patient’s ED. We weed out if he is experiencing ED as a result of a psychological or neurological issue. If the ED is determined to be caused by a vascular disorder and he does not have other major medical risk factors, then he is a good candidate for this treatment. Our patients range in age from 27 to 95 and about 80% of our patients get back to experiencing full erections naturally without the use of medication.
Q: What are the benefits of treatment? What is the process and when might a patient expect to see results?
A: The primary benefit or goal of treatment is to restore a patient’s ability to have spontaneous intimate experiences, restored confidence and a natural sex life. Unlike other treatment options, there’s no timing to take a pill when you want to perform. No injections to medically induce an erection, which can obviously be very intrusive when you are “in the moment.” Treatment is non-invasive - no surgery and no side effects.
In terms of what a patient can expect of the process, the first step is to schedule a consultation - a 10 to 30-minute phone call with a member of our team will give us an idea of whether or not he is a good candidate for the treatment. After he is determined to be a quality candidate and that the root cause of his ED is likely a vascular disorder, the patient will visit our office for an in-person consultation with one of our physicians.
The next step would be to begin treatment, which typically involves six visits over the course of three to five weeks. Then we wait for 90 days as the body takes six to 12 weeks to fully react to the treatment, at which time he’ll come back in for a follow up visit with the doctor. One of my favorite things about Salt Lake City is its abundance of trees. In fact, the University of Utah campus, on the bench of the city’s foothills, is a designated State Arboretum, with over 8,000 trees. Boasting 300 plus varieties, including almost 40 different types of conifer, the city, and the campus in particular are an incredible sight in the early days of spring as the beech, elm, oak, and Japanese flowering cherry trees begin to bloom.
It is said that you can experience all four seasons in a day, and that is certainly true if you’re planning on venturing up any of the myriad canyons that flank Salt Lake’s downtown sprawl. Sun in the morning and snow in the afternoon (winter into late spring) makes for beautiful days exploring all that the city has to offer: bookstores like The King’s English with its incredible storytime workshops; classic diners like Ruth’s with plates for the kids and biscuits as big as your head; or the gorgeous City
Creek Center, with over 100 stores and eateries in a walkable open air floor plan. The Hogle Zoo’s Wildlife Connections give parents and kids alike one-of-a-kind animal experiences with interactive feedings. Historic Temple Square tops the list of “must see” sights when in Salt Lake City. Every Thursday evening from 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm, the Tabernacle Choir rehearsals are open to the public to view at no cost. Monday through Friday at 12 pm, visitors can enjoy a 30-minute organ recital by Tabernacle organists and guest organists.

There are extroverts and introverts. There are loud personalities and reserved ones. Those who love dinner in with a few friends, or a real lollapalooza with everyone they know. The common ground between both types?
Both like a good party, no matter the size or shape.
“At the center of all good gatherings is the sense of celebration,” notes Candy Hirte, owner of Costa Mesa’s Where’s The Party? store.
Candy knows her way around a celebration. In business since 1990, she and a cadre of incredible ladies have been making every occasion special for their customers with everything from invites to home decor. “Customer service comes first, but that’s pretty simple when we all love the idea of celebrating every holiday.”
Nowadays the competition is building online, but even with expedited shipping, nothing really helps set the tone of a party like talking through a theme or decor details with an expert. “Each one of the wonderful women (there are 17 of them!) who work here can walk you through the process and share our etiquette gleaned from 29 years in business.”
Paper goods, balloons, and home decor weren’t Candy’s original business plan. “I kind of stumbled into the party,” she notes with a chuckle.
“I met a darling girl at a class I was taking and she said she was interested in opening up a party store in Orange County! I jumped in with both feet, not knowing a darn thing about this business. Well, except that I do love parties.” Quickly growing to love chatting with each and every customer who walked in the doors, Candy soon realized that on a very personal level, the business was about the personal friendships she was developing, and the small and large moments that made up each individual’s lives. “May-
be getting involved in the industry was a fluke, but knowing how much I love people, it just made sense to celebrate every occasion with them!”
Candy and her husband love their community, and often take the time to go out with their friends and family. “Obviously we love movies or re-
laxing with a good book, but giving back to those who surround us is so important to us. Through the store, through loving what I do every day, contributing to our local schools and philanthropies in the area. They’re our big supporters, and I must say, I come to work every day loving who I work with and excited to help a customer with their party.” Bridal, baby, and kids. Some might question why I would make the drive to Costa Mesa from my home in San Juan Capistrano to peruse Candy’s wares. My answer is quite simply that I’m not aware of a store in South County quite like hers - Where’s the Party? would be worth the drive if it were twice the distance. I could honestly spend hours wandering around the store looking at all the amazing hostess gifts, home decor and unique presents for weddings, baby showers, holidays and all of life’s other occasions. I’m already envisioning retro party ideas (think 80s, western, disco, Roaring 20s or other era-themed events where only a paper invitation will do).

Delaying Enrollment Into Medicare
Most people don’t retire at age 65 these days. They might cut back on their hours but working doesn’t come to a halt. And while you can retire anytime you like, when you go on Medicare has a protocol that you must follow, or you could end up living with life-long financial penalties. If you get your health insurance from a group health plan with 20 or more employees, then you can wait to enroll in Medicare. When you do then go on Medicare, the government will want to see proof that you had both health and drug coverage prior to your Medicare health and drug coverage, or else you will pay the afore mentioned penalties.
Deciding to enroll in Medicare while still working comes with some deliberation. Factors to consider are many. How much do you make? What you pay for Medicare Part B and Part D is based on your adjusted gross income and there are now 5 different levels of “adjustments” that get added onto the base premium for Part B and Part D. Delaying Enrollment Into Medicare

65 used to mean retirement and going on Medicare… Oh, how times have changed.
Most people don’t retire at age 65 these days. They might cut back on their hours, but working doesn’t come to a halt, especially when you live in Orange County. And while you can retire anytime you like, when you go on Medicare has a protocol that you must follow, or you could end up living with life-long financial penalties.
If you get your health insurance from a group health plan with 20 or more employees, then you can wait to enroll in Medicare. You can leave that insurance whenever you like, but when the time comes to enroll in Medicare there will be a document that needs to be signed off on from your company showing proof that you had that insurance while age 65 and over. You will also need to save a document that will be mailed to you that shows proof of prescription drug coverage. You must have credible drug coverage when you’re 65. When you do then go on Medicare, the government will want to see proof that you had it prior to your Medicare drug coverage, or else you get a lifelong financial penalty.
Deciding to enroll in Medicare while still working comes with some deliberation. Factors to consider are
many. How much do you make? What you pay for Medicare Part B and Part D is based on your adjusted gross income and there are now 5 different levels of “adjustments” that get added onto the base premium for Part B and Part D. You can have benefits where you pay nothing when you go into the hospital, have outpatient surgery, MRI’s, physical therapy and more. The premium(s) to get the additional benefits are very affordable, and most Medicare Advantage plans have no premium at all. It’s important to compare how much you pay for your benefits from your group insurance plan and how their deductibles, co-pays and coinsurance compare to your options with Medicare health plans.

Pets of the Month
Four year old Mack is a great dog looking to find his new best buddy. He loves to be active and doesn’t mind long walks or vigorous romps outdoors. Friendly and attentive, Mack responds very well to training and would thrive under further direction from an experience dog owner.
Kenai is a handsome Husky who is really quite the sweetheart. Like most Huskies, Kenai is high energy and does best after some vigorous exercise. He would make a wonderful family dog in an active home with a workout buddy or two.
Uzo is a five year old Domestic Shorthair with a beautiful, black smoke coat. Very outgoing and sociable, she is a talkative kitty who loves meeting new people. Uzo has lived with other cats and wouldn’t mind having a feline roommate.
Luigi is a happy, little guy who knows how to appreciate a good scratch behind the ears. Only one and a half years old, he is energetic and loves his walks. Luigi is looking for a home where he can finally settle down and be the center of attention.

Turns 20! Summer Fun as Summer Fun LEGOLAND® California

My husband and I made the mistake of telling our kids we were planning an overnight stay and two days of fun at LEGOLAND® in Carlsbad two weeks prior to the planned visit last month. As you can imagine, we were on the countdown for the the next 13 days, peppered with questions about which attraction in the park we would experience first, if we could plan to be at the entrance “right when they open” so as to be among the first in line, whether two days was really enough time to enjoy the main park, the water park AND the aquarium?
The hotel was a dream come true for our kids and their parents - they loved everything about their stay - from collecting clues in a scavenger hunt that results in a code that unlocks a treasure chest in the room (which reveals a Lego set they could work on while mom and dad get the bags unpacked). Our accommodation is divided into an adult section with a king bed and a smaller, separate nook with bunk beds). The rooms are themed according to five popular lines of Lego toys: pirates, adventure, friends, kingdom and NINJAGO guest rooms.
Bricks restaurant features a buffet of foods that will appeal to everyone — soups, salads, easy-access entrees, and a bar at kids’ level so that they can serve themselves.
Breakfast, which is included with the room, has everything you can think of: eggs, an omelet station, pancakes, yogurt parfaits, pastries, fresh fruit and an array of hot and cold beverages.
