TOP 5 REASONS MOST PEOPLE PUT OFF PLANNING FOR THE END OF THEIR LIFE

Over the years, I have put together hundreds of estate plans for people from all walks of life, all with unique situations. I found that by the time they get to me, the majority have a very similar sentiment, “I have been putting it off for years and finally needed to do something about it.”
When I ask why they have put it off for so long, I usually hear one of sevearal responses, most of which are based on a few poor assumptions. Here is a list of the top 5 reasons people avoid getting their affairs in order:
Reason 1: It’s
Too Expensive
It is an expense that it not 100% necessary but the cost of not putting a plan in place can be far more costly. By not having a plan in place, your estate will go to probate. The cost of statutory probate is calculated based on the gross amount of your probate estate. For example, for a $1,000,000 gross estate, the probate fee will be $46,000 ($23,000 to your personal representative and $23,000 to the

attorney) (statutory Probate Code 10810). However, the cost of an estate plan is a fraction of the cost of probate. In most cases, this ranges between $2000-$3000. To avoid both costs, probate and estate planning, some people opt to just change title to their property. However, this can be dangerous as this may cause gift tax consequences and possibly a larger capital gains tax that could have been avoided.
Reason 2: It’s a Ton of Work and Effort
While there is some work involved, it isn't nearly as bad as some people may think. At my firm, we have a simple but comprehensive questionnaire we'll go through that outlines your assets, your family, and your desires for the future. After that is taken care of, we will spend as much time as is needed to discuss your specific scenarios and details needed to create your plan.
In most cases you will likely opt to include your primary residence within your trust and changing the title can be a bit of a challenge if you aren't familiar with the process. Additionally, making a mistake here could be quite costly and one of the several reasons why we recommend not using a generic online trust formation website.
The most difficult part of the whole process for many people is simply having to answer questions relating to unpleasant topics which leads us to my next point.

Reason 3: The Topic of Death is Uncomfortable
This is very common. The uncertainty of what will happen to you or your loved ones is something most people don’t like to think about. As much as you want to plan ahead for your loved ones, we understand the process can make many uncomfortable. Our goal is to make sure you understand your estate. That said, you will need to contemplate some situations that may make you feel uncomfortable. The good news is that most people find great relief when completed as it relieves a lot of worry and anxiety that most people have about their future.
DON’T PUT OFF GETTING YOUR ESTATE PLAN ANY LONGER
Reason 4: It’s Not at the Top of My Priority List
Most people agree they should have a trust but just don’t get around to it. Life is busy, we get it, but, the stress of not having a plan almost always manifests itself at the least opportune times. We often have clients before a big trip trying to get their ducks in a row before departing. How sad to have this unnecessary anxiety in the back of your head when traveling! Considering how easy it is to get your estate plan taken care of and the high cost of not having it, most people wonder why they have put it off so long after they have it completed.
Reason 5: I Don’t Have Many Assets
You may have young children and you’d like a say on who should be taking care of them after your death. You may have certain health care concerns and wishes you’d like spelled out in an advance directive. Another situation most people overlook is planning for incapacity or incompetency. Regardless of the value of your assets, you may want someone to be able to access your property to pay the necessary medical bills or living expenses when you’re unable to manage your own finances. The alternative would be a petition for conservatorship which is time consuming and expensive. Again, even if you do not believe you have a large estate, if you own more than $166,250 at your death, your family will need to probate your estate.

HEALTH SAVINGS ACCOUNTS (HSA) AND MEDICARE

If you have a H.S.A. when you sign up for Medicare, you can’t contribute to your H.S.A once your Medicare coverage begins. If you contribute to your H.S.A after your Medicare coverage starts, you may have to pay a tax penalty.
Premium free Part A coverage begins six months before the date you apply for Medicare, but no earlier than the first month you were eligible for Medicare. To avoid a tax penalty, you should stop contributing to your H.S.A at least six months before you apply for Medicare.
Now, here is a really interesting piece of information regarding how your H.S.A can reimburse you for your Medicare premiums paid. Yep, even if your Medicare premiums are automatically deducted from your Social Security check, you can take tax-free withdrawals from a health savings account to reimburse yourself for them. After you turn 65, you can use your H.S.A money tax-free to pay for Medicare Part B, Medicare Part D and Medicare Advantage plan premiums. (but not premiums for Medicare supplement policies) in addition to paying for other out-of-pocket qualified medical and dental expenses. (now
including over the counter medications and sunscreen!)
There’s no time limit for withdrawing money from a health savings account to pay for these expenses. So, if you’ve had money in a H.S.A for several years and didn’t realize you could withdraw the money tax-free for Medicare premiums, you could reimburse yourself for all of those premiums at any time. (Just make sure to keep your receipts for expenses).
So, if you’re one of those higher income earners who plan on working past 65 but are concerned about having to pay more for Medicare Part
B and Part D because of how much you make, opening a Health Savings account now and contributing the maximum amount annually makes a lot of sense. In 2022 an individual with self-only coverage can contribute up to $3650 but if they’re 55 or older they can make a catch up contribution up to $1000 over their annual limit. If you’re in your 50’s or early 60’s now, this is a great strategy to pay for those Medicare Part B and D premiums (IRMAA amounts included for higher wealth individuals). I plan to utilize this option for when I go onto Medicare, so I’m fully funding my H.S.A now for down the road when I turn 65.

There are three main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Because each has many different appearances, it is important to know the early warning signs.
Look especially for change of any kind. Do not ignore a suspicious spot simply because it does not hurt. Skin cancers may be painless, but dangerous all the same. If you notice one or more of the warning signs, see a board-certified dermatologist right away, preferably one who specializes in diseases of the skin.
ACTINIC KERATOSIS
An actinic keratosis (AK) is a crusty, scaly growth caused by damage from exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. An AK is considered a precancer because if left alone, it could develop into a skin cancer. AKs are the product of a lifetime accumulation of UV damage and typically appear on areas most commonly exposed sun, such as the backs of the hands, forearms, face, neck, and scalp.
SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA
Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells arising in the epidermis, the skin’s outermost layer. SCCs often look like scaly red patches, crusty bumps, warts, or elevated growths with a central depression. SCCs may appear suddenly and some forms are tender to touch. They can become disfiguring and sometimes deadly if allowed to grow. More than 1 million cases of SCC are diagnosed each year in the U.S., which translates to about 115 cases diagnosed every hour. Incidence has increased by 200 percent in the past three decades in the U.S., and more than 15,000 Americans die each year from this type of skin cancer.
BASAL CELL CARCINOMA
Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most frequently occurring form of all cancers, with more than 4 million cases of diagnosed in the U.S. each year. BCCs may look like open sores, red patches, pink growths, shiny bumps, or scars. Any skin lesion that doesn’t heal, or bleeds with even gentle trauma, such as drying with a towel, is concerning for a BCC.
MELANOMA
Melanoma is a very dangerous form of skin cancer. Melanoma is caused mainly by intense, occasional UV exposure (frequently leading to sunburn), especially in those who are genetically predisposed to the disease. An estimated 178,560 cases of melanoma are diagnosed in the U.S. each year and is fatal for an estimated 9,320 of these patients. Fortunately, if melanoma is recognized and treated early, it is almost always curable.
WHAT PATIENTS NEED TO KNOW
1. Everyone needs to perform a self-skin exam once a month.
2. Melanoma can appear anywhere on the skin, including the palms/soles, under your nails, and places...for most, have never seen the light of day (genitalia). For this reason, it is important to look everywhere. Lock the bathroom door, get out a hand mirror, and check, it could save your life.
3. What to look for: ABCDEs, and an ugly duckling
A - Asymmetry: If I draw a line down the middle, do the sides match?
B - Border: Is there a nice crisp border, or does the mole melt into the surrounding skin?
C - Color: Moles should be one color, one shade of brown. Is there a variety of shades or additional colors, such as black, red, white, or blue?
D - Diameter: Any mole larger than 6mm, ie the head of a pencil eraser, has a higher risk of becoming melanoma.
E - Evolution: Has it changed?
F - The Ugly Duckling Sign: Most people have a “signature mole,” their own personal mole appearance and architecture. Is there a mole that seems different from all the others?
4. Everyone needs a full body skin exam by a board-certified dermatologist once a year, more frequently if you have a family history of skin cancer, a personal history of skin cancer, or live in an area with substantial sunshine.

I thought it might be a relic from one of the movies he worked on in the 50’s, but according to my grandma, it was just “one of those things your grandpa just insisted on having.”
Jeff McCabe has gotten more of his fair share of calls from people like myself, who accidentally come across family firearms in their home and don’t have the first idea of what to do with them. The owner of California Gun Services (CGS), Jeff is in the business of safe gun storage, ownership and disposal. The first step? Following California gun laws. I had zero clue that by driving the Colt to the Army Navy to try and turn it in, I’d be breaking a couple laws. According to Jeff there are laws restricting gifting or selling a gun, receiving a gun, borrowing a gun, transporting a gun, even storing guns. New laws come out every year, and it is almost impossible for anyone, even aficionados to keep up with them. Jeff and his team work closely with local law enforcement to ensure the process is easy and safe.
My grandma was afraid the grandkids might find it and would “just feel safer without it.” A sentiment shared by Jeff’s friends, family and fellow church parishionersmany of whom have sought his assistance over the years to ensure the proper storage or disposal of firearms they found themselves in possession of upon the passing of a loved one.
A BUSINESS IS BORN
What initially started as a favor for a friend has grown into a bonafide side business as word has spread about Jeff’s particular skill set and confidence in handling firearms. As the owner of the Orange-based One Way Painting, Jeff often encountered situations whereby he would come across a firearm when moving furniture around for a client prior to starting a painting project.
“Many times, the firearm belonged to my client’s father, grandfather or late husband and she never touched it because she was afraid of guns, but didn’t know how to get rid of it safely,” he says. “So many times these guns are loaded and just stuck in a nightstand or stored under the bed.”
Over the years, Jeff has encountered a variety of different circumstances where individuals seek his assistance in disposing of unwanted firearms. All situations call for professionalism and expertise, but some also require a more delicate approach. One such case was a recent call by a family whose patriarch was once a responsible gun owner, but was now suffering the early signs of dementia.
“His family wanted the firearms removed for safety reasons, but the gentleman lawfully owns the guns so it’s important to have a heightened sensitivity so as not to create upset,” says Jeff.
In addition to lay people looking for help, Jeff and his team also assist estate and probate attorneys representing
clients who are surviving family members in possession of unwanted firearms to navigate the process of safe gun disposal.
Raised in a family that had firearms for hunting and sporting, Jeff was taught early on how to handle, be respectful and always be safe when handling firearms. Jeff adds that “ … we as Americans have a great privilege to be able to own a firearm, but with that comes an even greater responsibility to not only protect ourselves legally by complying with Federal and State laws, but to protect ourselves, our neighbors and most importantly, our children from all possible dangers associated with firearms.”
San Clemente resident Rhonda Murphy couldn’t agree more. “There are many things to deal with when a loved one dies. In 2010, when cleaning out my husband’s closet, I came across several of his guns. I didn’t want to keep them and was unsure of what to do with them. My daughters didn’t want the guns and I didn’t want to deal with the hassle of storing them as my grandkids are often at my house. A friend suggested I call Jeff. He was very nice, easy to talk with, trustworthy and knowledgeable. He came to my house, checked all the guns to make sure they were unloaded and removed them. Jeff also told me that one of the guns was a collector’s item and was able to sell it for me. One less thing to have to worry about. I can’t recommend Jeff enough.”
As part of their auditing procedures, California Gun Services gives clients the option of a Voluntary Registration Form (in the case where the weapon was inherited). Many of Jeff’s clients are like my grandma who just prefers that the gun is destroyed. Jeff holds a Federal Firearm License and as such, is able to take possession of firearms without a Gun Transfer. He can also inspect firearms to ensure they are still in working order, and even tell you if the gun, or guns, you have is California Compliant.
“Most people are unaware that firearms that were purchased legally from a gun shop just a year ago may now be illegal in California,” says Jeff. “If we find a firearm that is out of compliance with the law, you’ll receive solid advice on how to make it compliant, sell it out of state, or potentially dispose of it. Our process is approved and certified by local law enforcement, it’s legal, safe and adheres to all state and federal firearms laws.

GUN AUDIT
Jeff will come to you and inspect your firearms to make sure they are in proper working order and that they are California Compliant. If your firearm is not compliant with the California Law, you will receive solid advice on how to make it compliant or possibly dispose or sell it out of state.
GUN DISPOSAL
If a firearm is found to be unsafe to use, cannot be repaired and has no historical value. California Gun Services will permanently destroy it by torching the receiver or frame into three parts or cutting it with a saw into five parts. Jeff will document this with photos and log it for the Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and email you the proof of destruction.
GUN TRANSFERS
Private Party Transfers happen between two individuals and will need to take place at a Federal Firearm Licensed Dealer. Since this needs to be done at a Gun Shop, Jeff cannot offer this as an in-home service. If you have inherited or legally obtain a firearm, he can provide you with a Voluntary Registration form or you can download it from the California Department of Justice which is NOT required to do at a gun shop. California Gun Services has a Federal Firearm License and can legally come to you and take possession of a firearm without a Gun Transfer.
GUN PURCHASES OF UNWANTED FIREARMS OR COLLECTIONS
California Gun Services will come to you and appraise a single gun or an entire collection of any size. You will receive an explanation of how guns are legally sold and transferred. California Gun Services can then make you a fair market value offer and/or explain how a gun can be put up for sale on consignment.
AMMUNITION AUDIT
California Gun Services will make sure you are using the right ammunition for the firearms that you have and that it is legal in the State of California. Jeff will inspect the ammunition to make sure that it has been stored correctly, is in good condition and will ensure that the ammunition is being stored properly, using the right type of container and stored in the right location in your home.

Sweet girl Poppy is a ten month old kitty who just wants to be loved. Abandoned at the shelter, Poppy is still learning how to fully trust but has come a long way. She is mildmannered, observant, and does not mind being petted. Poppy gets along well with the other kittens and would love a place in a quiet home with a feline roomie or two.
Two and a half year old Justine is a big girl with an even bigger personality. A confident rabbit, Justine has no problem telling you with her cute little grunts just how she likes things. She is food motivated, litter box trained, and would make a great house bunny for the right family.
Say hello to Joplin, a three month old Belgian Malinois who just can’t wait to meet you. One of four pups, Joplin is a happy little guy and loves to spend his days playing with his brother and sisters. Like most Belgian Malinois, Joplin has lots of energy and would do best in a home where he can lots of exercise and attention with an experienced owner.

Unlocking Yellowstone: Mammoth Hot Springs

There’s a a pretty knee-jerk reaction I get when I tell people about Mammoth Hot Springs. The first part involves taking out their phone to check and see if the photos on Google are for real - since it is legitimately one of the most stunning and unique sights in the natural world. The second part is to map out just how long it takes to get there. From OC, it’s a 20-hour drive or a pretty easy flight from John Wayne Airport or Long Beach to Bozeman, and then a quick hop across the Montana-Wyoming border.
The springs look like a cave turned inside out. Cascading pools over softened limestone form an absolutely stunning visual. Easily walkable via an upper or a lower boardwalk, the sight is tough to comprehend, especially some of the more outrageous shaped terraces (this is largely because limestone is a relatively soft type of rock which allows travertine formations to grow much faster).
Among the best known of the Lower Terrace’s features is Liberty Cap. Named for its resemblance to the peaked caps worn during the French Revolution, this hot spring cone rises 37 feet in the air. Another favorite of the 50 area springs is Minerva - renowned for its wide range of colors and travertine formations.
Just a few miles from these otherworldly springs lie some of Yellowstone’s cutest and most well-appointed accommodation at Yellowstone Riverside Cottages (yellowstoneriversidecottages.com). Located on the
Yellowstone River, at the North Entrance to Yellowstone National Park, the property features five cottages, seven suites and four studios. With interior decor that matches and reflects the rugged landscape outside, there’s a touch of comfort you won’t want to leave behind. Even for the stunning views just beyond your bedroom windows.
Adorable window boxes bursting with wildflowers in the spring and summer, and adirondack chairs as far as the eye can see on the lovely outer deck and pergola overlooking the river with panoramic views of the park, no detail is overlooked. The Roosevelt Arch rests right in the middle of the riverscape and the kids were particularly thrilled to witness elk strolling through town and a family of deer walking along the riverbank.
Amenities also include a walkway for easy fishing access, BBQ charcoal grills, tables and seating to thoroughly take advantage of the great out-
doors. Having said that, Yellowstone Riverside Cottages is also ideally situated for all the creature comfortscoffee shops, restaurants, bars, gift shops and a grocery store are all within easy walking distance.
We opted for the aptly named River Suite #13 - with a balcony literally on the river - and plenty of space inside with a main floor and loft space (a queen bed on each floor), full kitchen complete with cook-top, fridge, microwave/oven combo, cof fee-maker, cookware, utensils), two flatscreen TVs and free WiFi. This property proved to be the perfect “home base” for our daily treks into the park and a short 10-minute drive to Yellowstone Hot Springs (yellowstonehotspringsmt.com).
Settled between two mountain ranges on the south end of beautiful Paradise Valley and nestled on the bank of the Yellowstone River, Yellowstone Hot Springs is undoubtedly one of the world’s most unique soaking experiences. Set against this majestic backdrop with big horn sheep and bison grazing nearby as eagles soar overhead, each of the three mineral-rich pools here are designed with serenity, relaxation and rejuvenation in mind.
What made the experience even more remarkable was the “order” to which guests could indulge for maximum stress relief and circulatory benefits. Start with a 10-minute soak in the hottest of the pools (104-106 degrees) to heat your core. Then take a few short laps around the “Kniepp Walk” - alternating between its two parallel pools of ankle-deep warm and cold waters before “plunging” into the 65-degree pool for a few seconds, then start the process again. After a few rounds of this, our family agreed we each felt incredibly invigorated.
The proximity of our accommodation to these incredible sights positioned our stay for success from the start. Especially with tired teens in the back of the car at the end of the day, longing for a bite to eat and a soft place to land. Yellowstone Riverside Cottages. There’s no sense in Googling anything else.

This place isn’t the kind of establishment that has huge, bedazzled lights pointing to it with acrobatic sign holders out front. This restaurant respects itself in a quaint location at 24050 Camino Del Avion in Dana Point. If you didn’t know about it, you might miss it driving by. But after you read this, I guarantee you’ll make it a point to seek it out.

Ihave to admit - I’m pretty particular when it comes to deciding where to go for dinner on date night, out for a family meal or simply stepping out to enjoy a glass of fine wine and live entertainment after work. Lucky for me, I live in San Juan and am only a stone’s throw from a popular eatery that dishes up all this and delicious Italian cuisine to boot: Brio Tuscany Grille.
For starters, the Antipasto Italiano Platter arrives with an array of flavorful favorites - Prosciutto di Parma, artisan salame, fresh buffalo mozzarella, Tuscan olives, grilled artichoke hearts, roasted bell peppers and toasted ciabatta bread. I love the wood-fired pizzas here. They don’t make deep-dish-American-football-sweatpants pizza. No. They serve handmade, thin, crispy, flaky crust pizza. I had the Con Carne Pizza - a meat lover’s dream topped with pepperoni, Italian sausage, Brio house-made meatball and mozzarella cheese. You know, the kind of pie you sip wine with, reflecting on the old country while a hot steam of freshness rises poetically around you. Or, as others put it: one heck of a tasty pizza.
For heartier appetites, I recommend the USDA Prime Cut filet mignon dusted with fresh herbs and cooked to perfection with a hearty Barolo wine reduction and fresh herbed butter, and favorites like the Rigatoni Casa Brio characterized by grilled chicken breast, caramelized onions, roasted garlic, baby spinach, cremini mushrooms, sweet baby peas and fresh basil topped with fresh buffalo mozzarella.

While teens may be less likely than their parents to go to a massage therapist, there are plenty of reasons why this age group should be encouraged to give it a try.
The benefits of massage are well documented, among them relief of muscle tension, lowered stress hormones, increased sense of relaxation, improved immune function, and even a heightened ability to concentrate, according to studies conducted by the Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami School of Medicine. But for teenagers, there's an additional payback.
The teenage body is in the midst of transformation -- exponential growth and development in a rapid period of time. On the physical side, teens may be at increased risk for aches, pains, and injury. Many teens strain their bodies with competitive sports, get erratic sleep, and consume a less-than-optimal diet. Massage can help muscles recover from overuse,
and help balance the body and maintain that stability.
Perhaps even more crucial, teen massage can help improve body image and sleep patterns, and contribute to decreased depression, anxiety, and stress. This keeps a teen connected to her body, even as it morphs in confounding ways. "Many teens are self-conscious, and not happy with their bodies," says Eeris Kallil, massage therapist and shiatsu instructor at the Boulder College of Massage Therapy, in Colorado. "Massage can help teens stay grounded." Bodywork has also been
reported to help mediate eating disorders, a growing concern among teens.
Another potential plus: A beneficial, therapeutic relationship can develop between bodyworkers and teenagers during the years when adolescents need adult confidantes, but keep parents at a distance. The practitioner can become a supportive, trusted adult in a teen's life. And the session itself, according to Kallil, can be a way to deal with all the physical and emotional turmoil of this tender age.

Mara James is on a mission. The San Clemente resident and founder of Extraordinary Lives Foundation (ELF) has a goal for Piggie Bearthe character she created to empower children - to be the national face for children's mental health and wellness like Smokey Bear is to wildfire prevention campaign.
James founded ELF in 2015 to improve children’s mental health and wellness programs by supporting families with educational tools, resources, community outreach, and awareness events. Piggie Bear is the character she created to teach children effective ways how to identify and manage their emotions in fun, loving ways.
A member of the Orange County Behavioral Health Advisory Board,
Mara collaborates with the county’s lead mental health professionals in promoting advocacy for children's mental health and wellness throughout the county.
The New York native openly shares her own personal experience with a severe mental health episode along with raising a child with Autism and ADHD providing the inspiration to start ELF. The nonprofit’s services are geared towards young children (birth to eight) with a goal to equip them with tools to use throughout their lives.
“We believe that healing occurs when you combine Western medicine and therapy with holistic healing modalities,” she says. “All families deserve access to complementary healing options.”
ELF’s three key areas of service: PIGGIE BEAR
The tools used in the program include a Piggie Bear plush, power cards and The Power of Piggie Bear book written by James. The character empowers children with social emotional learning tools and teaches resilience, compassion and self-calming skills.

If you attended summer camp growing up, perhaps you remember being apprehensive at first, yet by the time you returned home, you realized that camp helped you learn and grow as you tried new things, developing more confidence and autonomy at the same time.
The same is true of camps today, and there are summer camp options that you probably never imagined when you were a kid. The great thing about summer camp is that it’s not only an excellent way for kids to spend part of their summer, it sends them home with new skills that are valuable right now, and that will serve them well into adulthood.
WHY IS SUMMER CAMP IMPORTANT?
Summer camp is important because it often provides a structured opportunity for children to grow. Kids go from home to school to extracurriculars, with each environment contrib-
uting to their development. In addition, camp provides another unique venue for growth, allowing kids to become independent and self-confident, while socializing, making new friends, and learning new skills.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BENEFITS OF SUMMER CAMP?
TEAMWORK – Teamwork may be a part of some school activities and you can teach your children the value of teamwork at home, however camp takes it to an entirely new level. Children quickly learn that they simply have more fun when they learn to work together as a team, whether they’re writing computer code, playing sports or learning a new language.
LEADERSHIP – Camp teaches children self-leadership, since they are responsible for basics like keeping track of their items, managing their time, and following a routine. Many
children who never thought of themselves as leaders discover that they have a real talent for leadership at summer camp.
FRIENDSHIP-BUILDING – Children who interact with like-minded peers are able to easily build friendships rooted in similar interests. These relationships are essentially networking opportunities – people to call on when it comes time for a side project or maybe in the future, starting a new business with the friend they met at summer camp!
RESILIENCE – The moment a child faces a challenge, without Mom or Dad around, and comes through like a champ is a moment when they learn and practice resilience. Summer camp is filled with opportunities for developing resilience, and as a result, your child will come home with more confidence and self-regard.
At camp, children often learn they’re stronger than they give themselves credit for.
SPORTSMANSHIP – Whether your child is playing board games, learning how to cook, or participating in sports, they are taught the value of fair, generous behavior toward others. Sportsmanship will benefit your child in school and in the friendships they make.
DECISION-MAKING – Summer camp is an outstanding experience for teaching kids independence, and a big part of independence is making well-informed decisions. Camp environments are structured, offer options, and help kids understand situations, so they learn about the pros and cons of decision-making in safe surroundings.
CONFIDENCE – With activity and growth comes success or failure. Whether it is basketball or 3D modeling, each activity comes with its own set of mini milestones and tests. Some of these activities might be brand new to your child, while others could be extensions of what they already know and love.
COURAGE – It’s not easy for a child or their parents when it’s time to go to camp for the first time. Yet at camp, kids learn so much about what they are capable of. Children have many opportunities to step out of their comfort zone and try new things, from new sports or activities to making new friends. Courage is like a muscle; it develops with repeated use and your child will be encouraged to try new things, and rewarded for doing so.
APPRECIATION AND GRATITUDE
– Let us not forget, time away from home helps kids appreciate home, their parents, their siblings, their belongings, a home cooked meal and everything else that they might miss while at camp.
As many of us reflect back on our summer camp experience, we might say that some of our fondest memories were those sunny, summer camp experiences that we had as we were growing up…preserving those simple, unplugged, childhood memories for a lifetime.
And although your child may miss their phone, tablet, or gaming system at first, once they start exploring, interacting with their peers, engaging in a variety of activities, and having new adventures, they are sure to leave summer camp with stories, memories, friendships, and life lessons that, they too, will remember for a lifetime.

When to start in this process: 3 months prior to your 65th birthday if possible. You can activate Medicare online by going to www.ssa.gov. Click on the image that has the word “Medicare” on it. That takes you to a section devoted solely to educating you on Medicare. Scroll down until you see a bright blue rectangle that reads, “Apply for Medicare Only”. Click on that and you will begin the application and activation of Medicare Parts A & B. If you’re keeping group coverage as your primary insurance, just activate Part A. (no premium) You can also call Social Security to apply over the phone: 800-772-1213.

South County Magazine's Monthly Mixers are Back!
We were thrilled to host our first live event after a 2+ year hiatus at Dog Pawrk Brewing Company in San Juan Capistrano.
Dog Pawrk has officially been in business since July 2019, but recently finished the tasting room’s initial construction phase and were excited to invite the community into the process.
The lovely and lively tasting room and patio served as the perfect springtime early evening locale for local business owners and professionals to mix and mingle, nosh and sample IPA’s, lagers, stouts, Sours, Hazy and barrel-aged beers. Thank you to Owners Nathan Beckham and his wife Danielle and Cofounder Robert Padilla!
