SUMMER CAMPS

is an excellent app for young children just starting out in the coding world.

4. LEGOS

There are various ways you can use Legos to teach code. They are not only a fun way to have your child learn how to build things, but they can also teach the basics of how to code. There is a range of different activities your child can follow to introduce the concept of loops and generic sequencing of actions.

Five Ways You Can Teach Your Kids

The tasks get harder as they go along, but if your little one is already comfortable with Legos, it is a great way for coding to be introduced with a familiar, fun toy.

To Code This Summer

I

n our society, technology is everywhere, and code powers our smartphones, websites, and everything in between. Teaching your child how to code when they are young sets them up for success far into the future, both in school and in their future careers. Introducing your child to coding is like learning a foreign language - the younger you start, the easier it is! The good news is that even if you are not an IT guru, you can have your child programming and coding as early as elementary school. There is a myriad of games, apps, activities, and camps designed to teach your child coding concepts. Here are five easy, fun ways that you can teach your kids to code this summer.

1. THE SCRATCH COMPUTER PROGRAM

Scratch was initially created by MIT students to help kids between the ages of eight and 16 learn how to code. The website allows your child to use a visual programming language to drag bricks to a workplace that seeks to animate sprites. The variations that your child puts the bricks together make different variables, leading to various loops, sounds, and activities. If both you 8 May 2019 | southcountymag.com

and your child are newbies to coding, there is a lot of instruction and help so you can learn and build together.

2. THE MOVE THE TURTLE APP

Turtle is an old anagram used to teach children the concept of coding - it initially instructed children about how to use Apple IIe. Move the Turtle gives children goals to reach new levels, make a sound, or even to draw a line using code. When they become proficient enough, they can use the free play mode “Compose that allows them to move the turtle any way they choose using the right code. Kids of all ages will love the coding challenges presented in this simple app.

3. THE CARGO-BOT APP

For a youngster who is attracted to animation, Cargo-Bot is a game that allows them to move crates from one area to the next by programming a crane claw. It was developed on the iPad, so the premise of it teaches the programming language Lua. Although it is not directly a way to teach a child true code, it is a great start to get their minds thinking in the way that is necessary to understand and use coding concepts. Cargo-Bot

5. CODING CAMP AT STRATFORD SCHOOLS

To teach your child the basics of coding, consider sending them to Stratford School for summer camp. Coding with Tynker instructs them in coding fundamentals through fun puzzles and games. They will learn how to use animation code and the basics of recursion, events, sequencing, and loops. Once they complete the Tynker course, they can take their skills to a higher level using it to do things like broadcasting, animation, and other game projects that enhance higher learning coding skills. Give your child a head start by introducing them to coding with these simple coding games and activities. They will get to explore new concepts while learning essentials skills for their success in their STEM/STEAM education and careers. Info: stratfordschools. com or (949) 458-1776.

the scope of design services. “I’ve worked for world-renowned companies, and done all the classes, but I wanted to see a wider range of clients: everyday people who may just need help with a color consultation, all the way to the full scope design renovations my background was in.”

Gina Lauren Interiors Residential & Commercial Design

A Listening Ear and an Eye for Design By Jody Robinson

S

tephen R. Covey, one of my favorite authors (nerd alert) famously wrote that “most people do not listen with the intent to understand; they listen with the intent to reply.” I have met many of these people. I am sure you have as well. Lesser often though, are the ones you meet in the camp of understanding. Even with very few words spoken. A great many things can come from a good listening ear: the least of which offers clearer communication and a sense of settlement for all parties involved. That feeling of settlement and contentedness cannot be overstated. Which was why when you meet Gina Lauren Hacken (who owns her own interior design studio in Tustin) and she turns out to be an avid listener above almost everything else, you will quickly realize that you’ve finally found the person who would help you get to the root of what you want to change about the functionality and unique style of your personal living space. Gina specializes in residential interior design, kitchen and bath design, furniture, flooring, accessorizing and window treatments. 18 May 2019 | southcountymag.com

My husband and I certainly could have used her help when moved into our “new” family home a few years ago. We struggled to come up with a cohesive plan for the interior: one especially that would match the tone and tenor of the exterior of the house. We wavered between casual and classic or a stunning, but incredibly-difficult-to-execute (for us) Tuscan countryside aesthetic. We’d poured over interior design books and my Pinterest board was littered with photos of the two, but somehow, the putting together of individual pieces just never gave us that contented feeling we were searching for. What we needed then was the assistance of an interior design professional like Gina who could help us articulate our vision. “The foundation for each project I take on begins with listening to the client first,” says Gina. “I use this foundation for the design relationship, transforming the details of my client’s dreams into their everyday reality.” With services ranging from commercial to residential, and from simple tasks such as window treatments to full-fledged concept execution (down to artwork selection!) Gina Lauren Interiors is out to change

It was in her early studies of Western and Near Eastern Art History that her passion for interior design evolved, eventually leading to a Bachelor’s in French + Art History, and a second in Interior Design. Taking inspiration from her travels all over the world, her business savvy, and the direction of several well-known interior design mentors, Gina cultivated relationships with both domestic and international clients. Applying her knowledge and visual talent to projects was a no-brainer, and working with those who came to her for advice quickly turned into space planning, furniture and accessory procurement, and final installation. “We always start with a custom floor plan, ensuring the space of each room is designed to its fullest potential.” Whether you have a specific color in mind, or are completely undecided, Gina can assist with choosing each motif and theme. “Looking to switch out your sofa pillows, or interested in highlighting the new buffet in your dining room? We never overlook scale and proportion, and can address everything from a simple corner of the house to an entire space,” says Gina. “We believe good design should be accessible, no matter what the budget. Everyone should have a beautiful and comfortable home.” And it starts with listening. “We begin with your dreams and ideas, and then we let quality, passion, talent, connection, and knowledge fill in the rest.” Gina can be reached directly by calling (858) 220-5264 or visit www.GinaLaurenInteriors.com

Shape Up

& Take Care of Yourself in Time for

Summer! By Jody Robinson

Summer is almost here. I can feel it. I was driving home the other night with the windows rolled down, the smell of charcoal barbeque briquets in the breeze, and I was transported poolside. Last year, I’d had a terrible cold season and felt like I absolutely dragged myself into spring, only to realize by the time summer came around I could have (and should

20 May 2019 | southcountymag.com

have) done a much better job of taking care of myself. I definitely wasn’t beach ready: mentally, or physically. And what excuse did I have? South Orange County is the pinnacle of healthy living: from restaurant menus showcasing locally sourced, sustainable cuisine to an abundance of indoor and outdoor fitness options for enthusiasts of all ages and stages of life. From cutting-edge stylists (pun intended) and gorgeous day spas to wellness centers specializing in rejuvenation and relaxation. That’s not even addressing the fact that South OC is home to some of the region’s most respected healthcare professionals. When you get to the end of rainy season and the sun finally shines for successive 70 degree plus days, checking off that list doesn’t have to

be a daunting undertaking. Finding balance is what it is all about. Whatever is on your list, we are thrilled to introduce our new HEALTH & BEAUTY section. We hope you will look to this ongoing department as a resource for established local favorites and exciting new finds … just in time for summer and year-round!

"Whatever your hair needs, I desire and appreciate the opportunity to make your hair dreams come true.”

Some people are born great; some people create their own greatness. For Victoria Vannini, creating with hair and giving her clients a style that reflects their personality and ‘true self ’ is more than just a “cut and color.”

“It begins with the consultation,” says Victoria. “I want to know about your lifestyle and career. [About] the hair products and tools you use. This is essential in evaluating the condition and texture of your hair and helps us to come to a place that is realistic - at the beginning and where we want to go for the future.” Education is an important element to Victoria’s career. After graduating from cosmetology school, Victoria continued at the Vidal Sassoon Academy in Los Angeles. While apprenticing at the Carlton Hair Salon at Crystal Court for one year, she honed her skills with creative color and hair cutting. From there, she went on to be an educator for Paul Mitchell. She currently takes classes at the Unite Academy in Carlsbad. “I want to stay current with color trends, foil placement, CONTACT new haircutting techniques VICTORIA VANNINI and strategies,” says Victoria, who sees her education as a hair stylist as ongoing. “The inHoward Jones Salon dustry is currently on the cusp 32545 Golden Lantern of using ammonia-free color. Just because a style works for Jennifer Aniston doesn’t mean it will work for every client’s hair texture and facial structure. Everyone is unique and it’s important to take the time to feel the hair to see how it moves, determine the best, most complementary hues and utilize top-of-the-line products that will enhance and strengthen the hair without any of the damaging ingredients."

Victoria is fabulous!! I moved to Orange County 1O years ago forcing me to find a new hair stylist, and had several horrible experiences. I decided my mission was to look at the hair style of each person I encountered. I found that perfect hairstyle and I asked her who did her hair and she gave me Victoria's name and salon. Now, I have people ask ME all the time who does my hair, and have even had people ask to take my picture so they could show their out of town stylist! She truly cares about her clients and puts all her efforts and skill to work to create the perfect style. I always look forward to seeing Vic and leaving the salon with a huge smile on my face and feeling great!

gering the “fight or flight” response, our nerves can bring rest and relief or rage; stress or serotonin. As the first Orange County-based whole body cryotherapy center (and one of the first in nation), Cold Rush Wellness Cryotherapy in Laguna Niguel is a full service, physician-run cryostimulation clinic dedicated to whole body health, starting deep in the core of its clients.

A HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE

The New Rush of Rehabilitation

at Cold Rush Wellness in Laguna Niguel

S

quarely in our middle-age, my husband, Tim, and I often joke about the attendant aches and pains that seem to accompany growing older. But when sciatica set in (for him) and a pulled muscle post-exercise had me favoring one leg over the other, it became decidedly less of a laughing matter.

in our home for as long as I can remember. When I sprained my ankle, his advice? Stay off of my ankle, ice it 20 minutes on, 20 off, wrap it up, and prop it up on a few comfy pillows. In past years, however, American physicians have been tapping into a new “I” in that equation - or “C,” rather. Cryotherapy.

A wrestler in high school and an outdoor enthusiast in adult life, my husband swears by the “RICE” method recommended by his coaches and physicians over the years. Short for “rest, ice, compression, elevation,” the steps have been stock-standard

Submitting the body to cold temperatures, be it a polar plunge into an alpine lake, an ice bucket challenge, or just a sprained ankle in a Home Depot bucket on the sidelines, works to reboot the body’s sympathetic nervous system. Responsible for trig-

Developed in its current form by Dr. Toshima Yamaguchi in 1978 to treat rheumatoid arthritis, Whole Body Cryotherapy (WBC) quickly gained recognition in the Japanese - and subsequently European - medical communities for its benefits beyond treating arthritis. Physicians began using WBC to treat a broader range of ailments including chronic inflammation, fibromyalgia, psoriasis and to revitalize skin. In Germany, for example, cyrosaunas are available in 60 hospitals for the treatment of autoimmune disease and post-surgical recovery. Unlike traditional ice baths, WBC is a dry process - because dry cold doesn’t penetrate the body like cold water or cold air with moisture, WBC temperatures are able to be much colder than what the human body could normally tolerate without extreme discomfort. Patients step into a cryotherapy sauna to expose their body to hyper-cooled air -200 degrees to -240 degrees Farenheit, triggering the body’s natural healing mechanisms as though it were freezing. Blood accumulates in the body’s core in order to warm itself and capillaries expand to nearly four times their normal diameter. This allows white blood cells to flow through the body faster, accelerating the healing process. During the two to three minutes your body is exposed to these extreme temperatures, the brain triggers the release of endorphins, adrenaline and other hormones for an increase in energy, a boost to the immune system and promote overall healing.

“Cryotherapy centers in Europe are all physician-run and deemed safe by the medical community,” says Owner Scott Young, D.C. who relocated his chiropractic and rehabilitative practice to Orange County over four years ago after 20 years in The Netherlands. “Benefits include decreased inflammation, improved athletic performance and rapid recovery from workouts, improved post-surgical healing and pain relief, faster healing of strains and sprains, improved metabolism, increased energy and is particularly helpful in relieving the symptoms of chronic skin conditions such as shingles, psoriasis, eczema, rosacea and dermatitis. At Cold Rush Wellness, we adhere to the European model and take all precautions to keep it a safe and effective treatment.” Dr. Young, who operates his holistic health practice by “finding the problem, fixing it and leaving it alone,” discovered the benefits of whole body cryotherapy for himself while living in Amsterdam. He found the health benefits rejuvenating and importantly, backed by sound science. With years of experience treating such varied conditions as rheumatoid arthritis, insomnia, post-surgical rehabilitation, strains, sprains, eczema, shingles, and dermatitis, it is no wonder that Cold Rush Wellness has been embraced by a growing number of patients.

PERSONAL EXPERIENCE One of the benefits of publishing South County Magazine is that it affords me an opportunity to share my own experiences at local businesses or in meeting business owners and entrepreneurs in the area. In this case, my husband and I both decided to give WBC a try. Over the course of 30 days (with treatments three times per week), I can personally attest to increased energy levels and surprisingly better sleep. For his part, my husband has long suffered from low back pain resulting in significantly decreased range of motion. A month into treatment, he can bend and stretch further than he has been able to in years without pain and feels “much less stiff.” Athletes swear by it for a boost in metabolism and rapid recovery from strenuous workouts. Given the results Tim and I have experienced, I’m anxious to see how we feel in another 30 days. I’ll tell you one thing though … so far, WBC has proven to be quite the upgrade from a bag of frozen peas on my ankle. Scott Young, D.C. can be reached by calling (949) 2816853. long-lasting relief from foot problems, such as hammertoes and bunions. One of the most common culprits of heel pain, plantar fasciitis will affect one in 10 people in their lifetime. It’s a condition that doesn’t discriminate: while the majority of people who experience plantar fasciitis are between 40 - 60 years, it can occur at any age and affects men and women equally. “Plantar fasciitis means inflammation of your plantar fascia, which is a strong band of tissue - like a ligament - that stretches from your heel to your middle foot bones,” says Carolyn Ashby, owner of the Feet First store in Dana Point. “It supports the arch of your foot and also acts as a shockabsorber in your foot. Someone suffering from plantar fasciitis commonly experiences stabbing pains with their very first steps in the morning. The pain may decrease after the plantar fasciitis limbers up, but frequently returns after long periods of standing or getting up from a seated position.”

Carolyn adds that you are more likely to injure your plantar fasciitis if you recently started exercising on a different surface (i.e. running on the road instead of a track), if you’ve been wearing shoes with poor cushioning or arch support or due to oversee of sudden stretching of your sole. “Your feet are your foundation. That’s why we custom fit every pair of arch supports that we sell and our inserts fit into every single style of shoes imaginable, including sandals, boots, high heels and athletic footwear. Every client who comes into the store gets his or her arches and foot flexibility measured.” In fact, Feet First encourages prospective customers to bring in “different types of your own shoes to try on the inserts.”

There are three main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Because each has many different appearances, it is important to know the early warning signs.

L

ook especially for change of any kind. Do not ignore a suspicious spot simply because it does not hurt. Skin cancers may be painless, but dangerous all the same. If you notice one or more of the warning signs, see a board-certified dermatologist right away, preferably one who specializes in diseases of the skin. ACTINIC KERATOSIS An actinic keratosis (AK) is a crusty, scaly growth caused by damage from exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. An AK is considered a precancer because if left alone, it could develop into a skin cancer. AKs are the product of a lifetime accumulation of UV damage and typically appear on areas most commonly exposed sun, such as the backs of the hands, forearms, face, neck, and scalp. BASAL CELL CARCINOMA Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most frequently occurring form of all cancers, with more than 4 million cases of diagnosed in the U.S. each year. BCCs may look like open sores, red patches, pink growths, shiny bumps, or scars. Any skin lesion that doesn’t heal, or bleeds with even gentle trauma, such as drying with a towel, is concerning for a BCC. SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells arising in the epidermis, the skin’s outermost layer. SCCs often look like scaly red patches, crusty bumps, warts, or elevated growths with a central depression. SCCs may appear suddenly and some forms are tender to touch. They can become disfiguring and sometimes deadly if allowed to grow. More than 1 million cases of SCC are diagnosed each year in the U.S., which translates to about 115 cases diagnosed every hour. Incidence has increased by 200 percent in the past three decades in the U.S., and more than 15,000 Americans die each year from this type of skin cancer. MELANOMA Melanoma is a very dangerous form of skin cancer. Melanoma is caused mainly by intense, occasional UV exposure (frequently leading to sunburn), especially in those who are

genetically predisposed to the disease. An estimated 178,560 cases of melanoma are diagnosed in the U.S. each year and is fatal for an estimated 9,320 of these patients. Fortunately, if melanoma is recognized and treated early, it is almost always curable.

WHAT PATIENTS NEED TO KNOW 1. Everyone needs to perform a self-skin exam once a month. 2. Melanoma can appear anywhere on the skin, including the palms/soles, under your nails, and places...for most, have never seen the light of day (genitalia). For this reason, it is important to look everywhere. Lock the bathroom door, get out a hand mirror, and check, it could save your life. 3. What to look for: ABCDEs, and an ugly duckling A - Asymmetry: If I draw a line down the middle, do the sides match? B - Border: Is there a nice crisp border, or does the mole melt into the surrounding skin? C - Color: Moles should be one color, one shade of brown. Is there a variety of shades or additional colors, such as black, red, white, or blue? D - Diameter: Any mole larger than 6mm, ie the head of a pencil eraser, has a higher risk of becoming melanoma. E - Evolution: Has it changed? F - The Ugly Duckling Sign: Most people have a “signature mole,” their own personal mole appearance and architecture. Is there a mole that seems different from all the others? 4. Everyone needs a full body skin exam by a board-certified dermatologist once a year, more frequently if you have a family history of skin cancer, a personal history of skin cancer, or live in an area with substantial sunshine.

Taped inside a small cardboard box and discarded in a parking lot, Pixie was initially very nervous when she first arrived at the shelter. Through the gentle care of volunteers and staff, she began to trust again and has become quite the sweet kitty. Pixie is estimated to be about five years old and would do best in a quiet home where she can get all the love she deserves.

Five year old Alfredo is quite the little character. Full of spunk, Alfredo spends his days strutting his stuff in the yard with his dog buddies. He is also quite the cuddlebug and his other favorite pastime is snuggling up next to you after his morning walk. Alfredo would do well in a home with someone who has lots of time to spend with him. Eight year old Sonny has come a long way. After first arriving at the shelter in terrible condition, Sonny received lots of care and attention from staff and volunteers. Since then, his happy personality has really begun to shine through. Sonny is silly and energetic and just loves to roll around in the yard during play time. He is also very pottytrained. Won’t you be the one to give this sweet boy a new lease on life?

Meet Kittle, a gentle soul who is looking for a home to call her very own. Just over a year old, Kittle is surprisingly mellow and spends much of her day sunbathing or watching the birds outside. She would make an ideal pet for someone who wants a calm, relaxed kitty.

CASANOVA RISTORANTE & COCKTAIL LOUNGE The menu here is inspired by the authentic cuisine, traditional and charm of Venice, Italy. I can happily attest that literally everything my husband and I have tried on the menu has been nothing short of superb. The service is excellent – attentive and unobtrusive – the ambiance is warm and friendly and its popular cocktail lounge featuring specially selected wine list (and full bar) has a loyal following among locals and visitors alike. I love the antipasto misto made up of a selection of cured meats and complementary cheeses and my personal fave: the Carpaccio al Salmone defined by crisp romaine, capers, radicchio topped with smoked salmon, lemon and olive oil. My husband’s go-to dish: the “Pink Lady Fettuccine” made with chicken and sundried tomatoes tossed in a creamy Alfredo sauce. Info: casanovaristorante.com

Renowned for works that are “bold, psychological and highly theatrical” (The New York Times), Boris Eifman infuses his signature choreographic style into this dynamic new production, set to a score by “The Waltz King” Johann Strauss II.

Let’s play a quick game: I’ll say a word and you write down the first thing that comes to mind. Ready? Beer. Now, I’ll bet you a pint that you immediately imagined some Oktoberfest, flush with icy cold brews and brats grilling in the background.

B

ut while beer has a colorful history indeed in the cloisters and taverns of Germany, the story of beer actually began a few thousand years before the Reinheitsgebot. Since its earliest days in ancient Sumeria, the art of brewing has come a long way. The simple act of allowing water, malt, and hops to ferment coursed through many different iterations before landing in the age of “craft,” when more than 150 beer styles and 20,000 plus brands exist on the market, all for the simple enjoyment of drinking. As of early this year, more than 6,000 separate breweries hold the recipes for all the craft beer in the United States. y entire experience with North Carolina up until a few months ago consisted of a vague knowledge of the sports teams the state boasts: Carolina Panthers, Charlotte Hornets, Charlotte Checkers, the Hounds, the NASCAR Cup races, and its Hall of Fame. That all changed when our family fell head over heels for Charlotte on a recent trip to cross the North Carolina off our “50 States List.” Headquarters to Wells Fargo, the city is the third-largest financial center in the United States. And to be sure, the city is chock full of bankable moments. Nicknamed the Queen City, the city of Charlotte was honored with the moniker of the German princess Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, who was head consort of Great Britain (and therefore Ireland); those 42 May 2019 | southcountymag.com

among the first to establish a township in the region after the Catawba Native Americans population diminished. Nationally recognized for their interactive youth-centric activities, the Children’s Theatre and the Great Wolf Lodge are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the long list of “to-do’s” for long family-friendly weekend vacay. The Concord Aquarium, Sky Zone, ImaginOn, and Discovery Place (Science and Nature!) follow with a set of their own kid-friendly adventures. The field guide to fast casual started in Charlotte, with a long and delicious list of southern barbeque options for everyone. From pimento cheese to biscuits and backyard smoked soul food, to staples like jalapeno-cheddar cornbread and fried chicken just like Mama used to make it. Kids down for the night? Hit up any number of eateries serving

up craft beers and southern starters. Within a day’s drive are gorgeous wineries serving up the region’s most delectable vintages, but if you’re not keen on leaving the Queen City’s limits, the oldest rum distillery in the state lies within the city boundaries, serving up history along the banks of the Catawba River. Relaxing with a craft cocktail 19 floors above greater Charlotte might sound too good to be true, but the buzz of

Craft extends beyond cocktails at its rooftop Merchant & Trade bar from music, punch, and tableside bar snacks to mixology and bottle service. Rent the space for your own event or just enjoy the indoor-outdoor flow, complete with lawn, terrace, fire pits, modern furniture, and lush foliage. Head downstairs to Angeline’s for straightforward Italian-American cuisine that greets each ready tastebud. Seasonal southern ingredients are prepared with traditional Italian techniques, and every meal is the chance to reconnect with friends, family, and colleagues. Our family broke bread over a multi-course feast, full of antipasti, wood-fired pizza, and a post-dinner limoncello digestiva (for the grownups). The kids and I rose

early for flaky European style pastries, and I brought an espresso to my deliriously comfortable husband in bed, before we ventured out for another day in the city. - elegantly melds history with nostalgia in everything from its ambiance to its menu of chef-driven family-style Southern comfort food (meats, vegetables and sides here are served on a jumble of plates). Think of it as a family potluck, but one where the spread is comprised of only your favorite foods. Inspired by the dishes served in the region during the late 1800s and early 1900s, the eats here revolve around what might very likely be “the best fried chicken in town” (brined, battered and fried), sides and snacks (think house pickles, pimento cheese ball rolled in spiced pecans, mac & cheese and my personal fave - kale grits) and seriously impressive, innovative craft cocktail creations (like a smoked mint julep that I can’t say I’ve ever seen on a menu anywhere else). The hometown spirit is alive and well in North Carolina, beginning with the renegade nature of NASCAR, brought to life at the Hall of Fame (nascarhall. com). Celebrating the spirit of America’s favorite race, the Hall features exhibits ranging from the suits our favorite drivers have worn to the exact tilt and sprawl of each fabled track: from 0 to nearly 33 degrees banked. Realistic racing simulators and Race Week simulators help recreate the sport from all angles: pit to to driver’s seat. The River’s Edge, Pump House Biergarten, Adventure Dining opportunities ensures no shortage of food and fuel throughout the day. Based on our kids’ excitement in regaling the tale of our day of adventure at the U.S. National Whitewater Center, we wouldn’t be surprised if this world-class outdoor recreation destination rises to the top of all of our friends and family’s “must experience” list when in Queen City. southcountymag.com | May 2019 45

Loaded Inheritance: Safe Gun Storage, Ownership and Disposal with California Gun Services By Ann Laurence

M

y grandparents owned a beautiful three bedroom casita in Solana Beach. Just up the road from the train station, their home was built in the twenties, and renovated completely when I was in high school. When my grandfather passed away, I moved in with my grandma, doing chores around the house for her and helping to maintain the garden. One day, I was looking for my grandfather’s whetstone, to sharpen an old pair of shears, and I stumbled across his Colt Python 357 Magnum. I had to look it up - I thought it might be a relic from one of the movies he worked on in the 50’s, but according to my grandma, it was just “one of those things your grandpa just insisted on having.” Jeff McCabe has gotten more of his fair share of calls from people like myself, who accidentally come across family firearms in their home and don’t have the first idea of what to do with them. The owner of California Gun Services, Jeff is in the business of safe gun storage, ownership and disposal. The first step? Following California gun laws. I had zero clue that by driving the Colt to the Army Navy to try and turn it in I’d be breaking a couple laws. According to Jeff there are laws restricting gifting or selling a gun, receiving a gun, borrowing a gun, transporting a gun, even storing guns. New laws come out every year, and it is almost impossible for anyone, even aficionados to keep up with them. Jeff and his team work closely with local law enforcement to ensure the process is easy and safe. 46 May 2019 | southcountymag.com

My grandma hadn’t touched the revolver in years, though my grandfather had made sure she shot it at some canned tomatoes on a desert trip when they were younger. “I’m afraid the grandkids might find it,” she told me that day. “I’d feel safer without it.” A sentiment shared by Jeff’s friends, family and fellow church parishioners - many of whom have sought his assistance over the years to ensure the proper storage or disposal of firearms they found themselves in possession of upon the passing of a loved one.

HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE

What initially started as a favor for a friend has grown into a bonafide side business as word has spread about Jeff’s particular skill set and confidence in handling firearms. As the owner of the Orange-based One Way Painting, Jeff often encountered situations whereby he would come across a firearm when moving furniture around for a client prior to starting a painting project. “Many times, the firearm belonged to my client’s father, grandfather or late husband and she never touched it because she was afraid of guns, but didn’t know how to get rid of it safely. So many times these guns are loaded and just stuck in a nightstand or stored under the bed.” Raised in a family that had firearms for hunting and sporting, Jeff was taught early on how to handle, be respectful and always be safe when handling firearms. I believe that we as Americans have a great privilege to be able to own

a firearm, but with that comes an even greater responsibility to not only protect ourselves legally by complying with Federal and State laws, but to protect ourselves, our neighbors and most importantly, our children from all possible dangers associated with firearms.” San Clemente resident Rhonda Murphy couldn’t agree more. “There are many things to deal with when a loved one dies. In 2010, when cleaning out my husband’s closet, I came across several of his guns. I didn’t want to keep them and was unsure of what to do with them. My daughters didn’t want the guns and I didn’t want to deal with the hassle of storing them as my grandkids are often at my house. A friend suggested I should call Jeff. He was very nice, easy to talk with, trustworthy and knowledgable. He came to my house, checked all the guns to make sure they were unloaded and removed them. Jeff also told me that one of the guns was a collector’s item and was able to sell it for me. One less thing to have to worry about. I can’t recommend Jeff enough.” As part of their auditing procedures, California Gun Services gives clients the option of a Voluntary Registration Form (in the case where the weapon was inherited). Many of Jeff’s clients are like my grandma who just prefers that the gun is destroyed. Jeff holds a Federal Firearm License and as such, is able to take possession of firearms without a Gun Transfer. He can also inspect firearms to ensure they are still in working order, and even tell you if the gun, or guns, you have are California Compliant. “Most people are unaware that firearms that were purchased legally from a gun shop just a year ago may now be illegal in California,” says Jeff. “If we find a firearm that is out of compliance with the law, you’ll receive solid advice on how to make it compliant, sell it out of state, or potentially dispose of it. Our process is approved and certified by local law enforcement, it’s legal, safe and adheres to all state and federal firearms laws. “Since firearms last more than a lifetime, families often have small and large collections of guns in their home. Knowing what you have and what to do with those firearms is important. Whether it’s from a death in the family, inheritance, or just a need for clearing out some that you know you will never use, we can help. Following California gun laws is essential. We come to you. It’s a safe, easy and professional process.”

California Gun Services’ processes are approved and certified by local law enforcement and adheres to all state and federal firearms laws for the following services:

GUN AUDIT

Jeff will come to you and inspect your firearms to make sure they are in proper working order and that they are California Compliant. If your firearm is not compliant with the California Law, you will receive solid advice on how to make it compliant or possibly dispose or sell it out of state.

GUN DISPOSAL

If a firearm is found to be unsafe to use, cannot be repaired and has no historical value. California Gun Services will permanently destroy it by torching the receiver or frame into three parts or cutting it with a saw into five parts. Jeff will document this with photos and log it for the Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and email you the proof of destruction.

GUN TRANSFERS

Private Party Transfers happen between two individuals and will need to take place at a Federal Firearm Licensed Dealer. Since this needs to be done at a Gun Shop, Jeff cannot offer this as an in-home service. If you have inherited or legally obtain a firearm, he can provide you with a Voluntary Registration form or you can download it from the California Department of Justice which is NOT required to do at a gun shop. California Gun Services has a Federal Firearm License and can legally come to you and take possession of a firearm without a Gun Transfer.

GUN PURCHASES OF UNWANTED FIREARMS OR COLLECTIONS

California Gun Services will come to you and appraise a single gun or an entire collection of any size. You will receive an explanation of how guns are legally sold and transferred. California Gun Services can then make you a fair market value offer and/or explain how a gun can be put up for sale on consignment.

AMMUNITION AUDIT To connect with Jeff directly, call (714) 639-9608 or for more information, visit CaliforniaGunServices.com.

California Gun Services will make sure you are using the right ammunition for the firearms that you have and that it is legal in the State of California. Jeff will inspect the ammunition to make sure that it has been stored correctly, is in good condition and will ensure that the ammunition is being stored properly, using the right type of container and stored in the right location in your home. southcountymag.com | May 2019 47

• Is Plan F going away? No, Medicare beneficiaries that were eligible for Medicare Part A prior to January 1st, 2020 will always have access to a Plan F Medicare supplement plan. They can enroll in Plan F AFTER 01/01/2020 and keep it for as long as they like. • For those who will go on Medicare after January 1st, 2020 there’s good news! And after you learn about “Plan G” you shouldn’t be concerned about not having a Plan F option because Plan G is EXACTLY like Plan F with the exception that it won’t pay your Medicare Part B annual deductible for you. This year, that Part B deductible is a measly $185. It’s been very low for a very long time. So, selecting Plan G would mean when your medical provider bills Medicare and your Medicare supplement provider, they will come back to them and start paying on the $186th dollar. Medicare pays 80% and your Medicare supplement pays the other 20%. You pay nothing after the first $185, and Plan G is much less expensive than Plan F! southcountymag.com | May 2019 49

So, I want to bring you the facts on this one: • Is Plan F going away? No, Medicare beneficiaries that were eligible for Medicare Part A prior to January 1st, 2020 will always have access to a Plan F Medicare supplement plan. They can enroll in Plan F AFTER 01/01/2020 and keep it for as long as they like. • Anyone that becomes eligible for Medicare Part A on or after January 1st, 2020 will NOT be able to enroll in Plan F. • Why is this happening? Short answer: Politics. Google “MACRA 2015” if your interested in the very lengthy details. • For those who will go on Medicare after January 1st, 2020 there’s good news! After you learn these next few facts about “Plan G” you shouldn’t be concerned about not having a Plan F option. Plan G is EXACTLY like Plan F with the exception that

• So why are people acting like the sky is falling on the Plan F departure? Because they don’t have the facts more than likely. Or, if they’re in the Medicare biz they should know the same facts that I do, if they don’t, buyer beware.

oxy coatings can also be removed during this same process. “Despite the fact that Coatings Industry requires concrete to at least be diamond ground before installing a new coating system, many of my competitors will install their coatings right over raw or pressure washed concrete just to save a few bucks - I will never do that” says Paul.

It’s Not Epoxy, It’s SpartaFlex!

F

or nearly 40 years, southern California homeowners have used Epoxy for garage and industrial floor coating projects despite its tendency to yellow, it’s soft and easy to scratch surface and it’s tendency to be permanently damaged by the hot, high performance tires found on most cars in the OC area. Today OC homeowners don’t have to settle for Epoxy and all of its flaws anymore. SpartaFlex is an advanced, next generation 100% solids polyaspartic floor coating that gives your garage a beautiful finish that is 3x harder than epoxy, resists yellowing while also resisting permanent damage from hot tires. Perhaps best of all, SpartaFlex comes with a much better warranty than Epoxy.

Perkins Custom Coatings has been installing SpartaFlex on OC garage floors for nearly 12 years and has completed over 8,000 floors during that period of time. Its CEO and owner, Paul Frankel is considered by many to be the most knowledgeable contractor in the local market. “Unlike many of our competitors, we strive to do an onsite assessment including a moisture test for every floor coating project we install and instead of using the ‘one size fits all’ approach, we develop a coating solution that we believe will last for decades not just for a few years.” Perkins uses only the most advanced surface preparation methods available and will either diamond grind or shot blast every floor that he installs. Old, failing, yellowed ep-

Perkins also is known for its professional and unique approach to repairing concrete cracks. “Anyone can slap some crack repair paste to cosmetically fix a crack” says Paul. A year later, when the concrete moves again and damages their brand new floor coating, the devastated homeowner will learn that this damage is not covered by the typical Epoxy warranty. “We are the only company that I know of that uses a ‘structural crack repair’ technique to fix cracks. The process is so effective we can offer our customers a warranty that can cover future damage from cracks!” says Paul. After the surface prep is completed, a very effective moisture control primer is applied to the concrete. “This is extremely important” says Paul because for many homes built in Socal before 2005, elevated moisture vapor levels in the garage concrete can have a detrimental impact on floor coatings. Paul does a fast and non-destructive moisture test for every one of the pre-2005 homes he visits and develops a unique installation plan for each home. For newer homes, Paul and his crew can use a basic primer that dries a bit faster allowing installation of a garage floor in as little as one day! The color chips that give the Perkins floor its legendary appearance are sandwiched between this primer and finish coat. Perkins carries the widest selection of colors and sizes in the market and uses a ‘full chip broadcast’, not a partial sprinkling of chips like many of its competitors. “The full chip broadcast gives the floor a consistent appearance and makes the floor much more durable and helps hide dirt better than the partial broadcast finish” says Paul. Finally, Perkins installs the SpartaFlex polyaspartic finish coat and the finished garage comes to life. “Epoxy & SpartaFlex floor coatings are virtually identical in appearance when they are first installed” says Paul. “However, when you will really begin to appreciate your SpartaFlex floor is a few months down the road when you start to see problems develop with your Epoxy floor. If there was a better material on the market, I would be selling it, but there isn’t and that is why we love selling SpartaFlex.”

For more information or to see for yourself the advantages of SpartaFlex over Epoxy, you can call Perkins Custom Coatings, at 866-330-1DAY (1329) or visit their informative website at www.perkinscustomcoatings.com. 52 May 2019 | southcountymag.com

Hangin’ with Jenna:

Meet Align’s Aerial Yoga Instructor Jenna Cassidy By the Align Pilates Team

When combined, the words “aerial” and “yoga” together can conjure up some crazy aerobatic images.

perience the regular aches and pains from doing so. “The aerial yoga hammocks provide the most profound relief from this daily training,” explains Jenna. “I use aerial yoga to condition and build full-body strength, as well as restoratively to decompress, open and release tension from my body.” Because of the positive effects of aerial yoga, Jenna’s developed a passion for sharing the practice with others. “Aerial Yoga is for everybody and every body,” she states emphatically. “The versatility of the hammock allows for just this. Practitioners use the hammock in a wide range of ways: to assist in supporting body weight—if they are not able to do so themselves—as a modality of physical therapy, to compliment athletic training, strengthen and lengthen, detoxify and tone, develop trust in themselves, and more.”

“Some of the most enjoyable classes I’ve taught have been to entire families—mom, dad, and kids—all practicing together. It is a sure way to put a smile on everyone’s faces,” continued Jenna. “Whether I am using the hammock to enhance my yoga practice or relieve my body from training, it is a time where I get to flip around, hang upside down, play in the air with support, this adds a joyful component to aerial allowing me to smile and laugh. Plus, it has given me the power to offer yoga to a broader audience of practitioners, as the hammock is safe and appropriate for everyone: all ages, body types, and experience levels.” At Align we encourage you come hang with Jenna and the aerial team to experience this great mindful movement called aerial yoga.
