Here in Orange County, we love to celebrate summertime with beach days, road trips, swimming pools and popsicles.
With some planning, parents can ensure that the time off strikes the perfect balance between great times for children and a way to squeeze in some educational opportunities.
Oxford Learning indicates that the equivalent of one month of learning is lost after summer vacation for students in what is known as the “summer slide.” However, supplemental activities make the summer months an amazing opportunity to bolster our kids’ education.
1. Read. Studies show that reading just a handful of books over the summer has a positive impact on a child’s learning and comprehension. Summertime allows students to forget about assigned reading and choose books that spark their interest and get them curious about exploring the world around them.
2. Create. Getting creative, in learning and in play, has been proven to directly help with subjects of English and art, as well as increase
emotional success—a skill we all need sharpened as we emerge from the pandemic! Buy a summer journal and encourage daily creative writing, find crafts at your local craft store, decorate cookies or cupcakes for neighbors and friends or just print out coloring pages for busy hands.
3. Explore. Taking time to investigate nature trails, hikes, museums or aquariums inspires kids to learn and is a great way to involve the entire family!
4. Play. Physical fitness levels can take a hit over the summer months. Movement and activity are key to a well-rounded mind, and the warm summer months make it an ideal time to get outside and play.

There’s a delicious secret brewing in San Juan Capistrano, but it won’t be hush hush very long. The Dog Pawrk Brewing Company has officially been in business since July 2019, but just recently finished their tasting room’s initial construction phase, and are excited to welcome the local community into their process.
Co-founder and Director of Innovation Nathan Beckham is proud to compare their brews to mankind’s best friend: “while dogs are comforting - loving and caring –you should be able to come in and find the beers you know and love, like IPAs, lagers, Stouts, etc. But our mascot Apollo, our 85 lb. American Bulldog is squirrelly and unpredictable, so we can make anything else we want! Sours, hazys, and barrel aged beers.”
Just making a solid brew isn’t enough for Nathan and the team in San Juan Capistrano. They’ve become THE dog-related brewery, and a hub for local community, charity activity, and fluffy four-legged shenanigans.
“Hyper-localism is our focus,” he says. “Giving back is what drives us and hosting a full spectrum of flavors and experiences, keeps our tag line “Reliably Unpredictable” alive and well.
It wasn’t always so official though. “Back in the day, I used to home brew, but I found out fast that the styles I was interested in at the time (Belgian and Barrel Aged beers) took a lot of time and were more complex than I thought I could do.” Out of necessity comes invention, and suddenly the focus shifted to finding rare brews and making down home connections in the industry.
When a family friend asked him to start a brewery in 2016 two roads diverged, as it were, and “beer flavored beer” took a backseat.
“It has been a long journey, but my wife and I are excited to have created what we have. My motto… If it tastes good, it’s my fault. If it looks good, it’s my wife’s fault.”
Nathan, wife Danielle and Co-Founder Robert Padilla sometimes joke that they’re barking up the wrong tree.
“We joke that we have more of an East Coast Beer Program,” says Nathan. “Not because of the flavors, but because we have flavors! The west coast

is full of IPA options and we strive to offer not only a variety of IPAs, but many fan favorites. Spanning Hefe’s, IPAs, Stouts, Gose’s, Fruited options, Seltzer and Slushies (adult and NA for the kids in all of us).”
While there has been an uptick in IPAs across the craft brewery scene. The Dog Pawrk has embraced the hoppy craft movement while striving to provide something for everyone. And while Mississippi native Nathan is a fan of BBA, sours and hazys, he likes to take an untraditional take on the brewing experience. Never claiming to be of the technical brewing greats he enjoys brewing by flavor and creativity. Like the untrained Chomp’d champ that can create creative and inventive experiences.
Much can be said for local collaboration, with a business like Nathan’s.
“Because our focus is on community and hyperlocalism, we want to continue to offer more food and beer events. Things continue to open up, and we’re excited to bring our donut + beer pairing with JD Flannel back again with some consistency.”
Great reviews are one thing- being able to look ahead and give the people what they’ve been searching for in quantity and scale is the other. While it might have been a long lead in, things are going well. Seems like all your
experience is paying off, I note, and Nathan grins. “It definitely doesn’t hurt to have been a professional beer drinker for years.”

The process is so effective we can offer our customers a warranty that can cover future damage from cracks!” says Paul.
After the surface prep is completed, a very effective moisture control primer is applied to the concrete. “This is extremely important” says Paul because for many homes built in Socal before 2005, elevated moisture vapor levels in the garage concrete can have a detrimental impact on floor coatings. Paul does a fast and non-destructive moisture test for every one of the pre-2005 homes he visits and develops a unique installation plan for each home. For newer homes, Paul and his crew can use a basic primer that dries a bit faster allowing installation of a garage floor in as little as one day!
The color chips that give the Perkins floor its legendary appearance are sandwiched between this primer and finish coat. There are three main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Because each has many different appearances, it is important to know the early warning signs.
Look especially for change of any kind. Do not ignore a suspicious spot simply because it does not hurt. Skin cancers may be painless, but dangerous all the same. If you notice one or more of the warning signs, see a board-certified dermatologist right away, preferably one who specializes in diseases of the skin.
ACTINIC KERATOSIS
An actinic keratosis (AK) is a crusty, scaly growth caused by damage from exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. An AK is considered a precancer because if left alone, it could develop into a skin cancer. AKs are the product of a lifetime accumulation of UV damage and typically appear on areas most commonly exposed sun, such as the backs of the hands, forearms, face, neck, and scalp.
SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA
Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells arising in the epidermis, the skin’s outermost layer. SCCs often look like scaly red patches, crusty bumps, warts, or elevated growths with a central depression. SCCs may appear suddenly and some forms are tender to touch. They can become disfiguring and sometimes deadly if allowed to grow. More than 1 million cases of SCC are diagnosed each year in the U.S., which translates to about 115 cases diagnosed every hour. Incidence has increased by 200 percent in the past three decades in the U.S., and more than 15,000 Americans die each year from this type of skin cancer.
BASAL CELL CARCINOMA
Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most frequently occurring form of all cancers, with more than 4 million cases of diagnosed in the U.S. each year. BCCs may look like open sores, red patches, pink growths, shiny bumps, or scars. Any skin lesion that doesn’t heal, or bleeds with even gentle trauma, such as drying with a towel, is concerning for a BCC.
MELANOMA
Melanoma is a very dangerous form of skin cancer. Melanoma is caused mainly by intense, occasional UV exposure (frequently leading to sunburn), especially in those who are genetically predisposed to the disease. An estimated 178,560 cases of melanoma are diagnosed in the U.S. each year and is fatal for an estimated 9,320 of these patients. Fortunately, if melanoma is recognized and treated early, it is almost always curable.
WHAT PATIENTS NEED TO KNOW
1. Everyone needs to perform a self-skin exam once a month.
2. Melanoma can appear anywhere on the skin, including the palms/soles, under your nails, and places...for most, have never seen the light of day (genitalia). For this reason, it is important to look everywhere. Lock the bathroom door, get out a hand mirror, and check, it could save your life.
3. What to look for: ABCDEs, and an ugly duckling
A - Asymmetry: If I draw a line down the middle, do the sides match?
B - Border: Is there a nice crisp border, or does the mole melt into the surrounding skin?
C - Color: Moles should be one color, one shade of brown. Is there a variety of shades or additional colors, such as black, red, white, or blue?
D - Diameter: Any mole larger than 6mm, ie the head of a pencil eraser, has a higher risk of becoming melanoma.
E - Evolution: Has it changed?
F - The Ugly Duckling Sign: Most people have a “signature mole,” their own personal mole appearance and architecture. Is there a mole that seems different from all the others?
4. Everyone needs a full body skin exam by a board-certified dermatologist once a year, more frequently if you have a family history of skin cancer, a personal history of skin cancer, or live in an area with substantial sunshine.

Though the groundhog warned us about eight more weeks of winter, the fact remains that spring is on its way. And with the change of seasons always comes an exciting time in food - especially at your favorite restaurants.
My favorite go-to for a fine dining night out is Laguna Beach’s own award-winning Selanne Steak Tavern. Located in an exquisitely charming
historic 1934 home on PCH the tavern is known for its delicious seasonal fare: locally farmed and fished so you get the freshest entrees and sides imaginable - from succulent steaks and chops, superb poultry, game and seafood, artisan cocktails, beers and for a burgeoning oenophile like me, selections from a singularly impressive 2,750-bottle wine list with a focus on California cult wines and other highly rated, world-class vintages).
On a recent evening out, my husband and I indulged in an opulent gourmet experience defined by standout cuisine, stellar service (hyper-attentive yet unobtrusive) and an elegant setting.

My strictly meat-and-potatoes husband opted for the cooked-to-perfection Cedar River Farms hand-cut filet mignon accompanied by smoked trumpet mushroom and cipolinni garnish, truffle butter and bordelaise. Although I typically lean toward seafood, I happily opted for a new nightly special called “The Chef’s Cut” - a rotating offering of exceptional entrees using not as well-known cuts of meats. The resulting dishes - like the Brazilian Picanha Steak (juicy, tender and succulent) - allow Chef Vince Terusa and his team to create something fun and flavorful for guests that are reflective of global cultures and cuisines.
Take your pick from any of the classic or seasonal dishes, sip of the curated wine list - and keep coming back for more. Winter, spring, summer or fall: there’s a taste for every season.
Pismo Beach has long been a coastal playground. Its rich history includes Chumash villages and early California explorers including Don Gaspar de Portola. Legends surround the area and the many hands the land has passed through. Wharf businesses, tar collection, hotels, cattle and outdoor recreation still abound in varying degrees, but the stunning beach hasn’t changed one bit.
One of the best and most comprehensively family friendly destinations in all of California, Pismo truly has something to offer all ages. From families playing in the surf at Shell Beach to wine tastings and outdoor activities, there isn’t much mystery to the area anymore: it’s stunning, safe, sensational, and stimulating. Given that Somerset Grill serves up delicious upscale coastal cuisine set against a panoramic waters-edge backdrop with live music every Saturday from 4 pm - 7 pm, I would imagine that this ranks among the
most popular of dining destinations for both hotel guests and locals alike. The menu is characterized by market fresh “coastal heritage-inspired” dishes served all day from an open, exhibition kitchen. Our family’s favorites? Mine - the Baby Gem salad with shaved onion, pepitas, cojita and a creamy cilantro anaheim dressing with grilled salmon while my husband’s 6 oz. filet atop a creamy potato puree was super delish. The kids loved the signature Vespera Burger followed by a decadent blueberry lemon tart - a sweet ending to a leisurely al fresco culinary experience and gorgeous weekend away.

There’s a specific kind of joy in that first sip of a good Guinness. Brewed first in Ireland in 1759, the authentic flavor and distinctive look upon pouring it straight from a tap makes it one of the most recognizable beers on the planet. Its reputation, like that of Dublin 4 Gastropub, is unmatched.
The family vegetable garden in County Mayo was where the food grew: really good food. The idea of fare that was not fresh caught, plucked, or picked became as foreign to executive chef David Shofner and his team as a pint of Guinness without its signature foamy double-poured head.
Dublin 4 opened its doors ten years ago this past St. Patrick’s Day, and are still offering farm-to-table, chef-driven, flavorful dishes. Relax, take ad-
vantage of the finest cocktails or even a whiskey tasting, and sink into an authentic draught: delicious on tap.
As it happens, my husband’s ancestry harkens back to County Galway, so he’s pretty partial to all things Irish while I fancy myself a fledgling foodie. A night out in “Dublin” seemed to be an ideal destination for a recent date night and our experience more than delivered.
The charred brussels sprouts with chorizo bilbao, maple dijon vinaigrette and citrus zest paired with Guiness brown bread slathered with whipped butter and clover honey was a flavorful start.
The diners at the next table raved about their cottage pie (a dish I imagine to be a delicious rendition of an Irish staple) and fabled fried chicken accompanied by jalapeno cheddar
cornbread and smoked bacon collard greens.
For our part, my husband opted for the mouthwatering D4 Gastro Burger topped with aged Irish cheddar, applewood smoked bacon, grilled onions and roasted garlic aioli while I indulged in the pan-roasted salmon with celery root puree, blistered heirloom tomatoes and caramelized shallot.
We’ll definitely be back for another date night, but were happy to discover that we could also lunch in Dublin any Wednesday to Sunday. Perhaps we’ll even bring our teenage kids with us next time for another scrumptiously inventive culinary adventure.

When the kids were elementary school aged, my husband and I embarked on an ambitious endeavor to visit all 50 states as a family by the time our oldest graduated from high school. With 27 under our belt, we were well on our
way ... then the pandemic hit and stalled out all our travel plans for the better part of two years. Our son is now a high school freshman and we are happily back on track - making up for lost time by taking advantage of every long weekend to explore another of our country’s infinitely interesting destinations. This time ... the Lone Star State’s capital city was on the agenda.
There are few places more interesting than Austin. Similar to Nashville, the city is a perfect amalgamation of Southern charm and modern sensibilities. Great music, great food, and the great outdoors make it the Bermuda Triangle of a good time - you’re only too easily lost in the pure satisfaction of it all. Options for swimming, boating, even surfing abound. A standing wave isn’t the city’s biggest boast though: it’s fun for all ages at any time of day or night. Vibrant entertainment and inspired local cuisine all withing easy walking distance in downtown make it a snap to find spots to stroll if you’re short on time or like us, trying to make the most of every moment during a weekend retreat.

Other than strolling around downtown and indulging in a couple of pretty amazing meals (as expected, Texas barbecue and steak dinners were not-to-be missed), we thought it’d be especially fun (and educational) to take an Austin Duck Adventure (austinducks.com) to tour the city with a splash (pun intended).
The original Austin tour, the company offers an amphibious excursion - starting out on land driving through downtown (Historic Sixth Street, the State Capitol Building, Governor’s Mansion) before splashing into beautiful Lake Austin for a from-thewater perspective of this vibrant city. Our guide, Captain Bob, couldn’t have been more animated, knowledgeable and entertaining - it’s no surprise that Austin Duck Adventures is one of the city’s longest running sightseeing experiences.

Walkers, joggers move along the lakeside paths while aqua enthusiasts take to the water by canoe, kayak, Swan pedal boat or standup paddleboard (all available via Capital Cruises).
While swimming around on the Internet prior to our trip, I came upon Magic’s Theater
experience - John’s “Closeup Magic Show” (sleight of hand table magic performed for a small audience made for an intimate and engaging outing - one that our son in particular found most memorable. John regaled guests with tales of his time working in Hollywood and shared details of the museum’s myriad memorabilia.

Turning 65 in 2022?

In most cases if you don’t sign up for Part B when you turn 65 you’ll have to pay a late enrollment penalty for the rest of your life.
However, if you’re covered by a large group health plan that you prefer to keep (for various reasons) then you don’t need to sign up for Medicare during your initial enrollment period when you turn 65. I will say though that it is helpful later on to do the Medicare Part A activation only (it’s premium free) so that you at least know your Medicare number when the time comes for you to leave that group health coverage.
Once your initial enrollment period ends you may have the chance to sign up for Medicare during a special enrollment period. If you’re covered under a group health plan based on current employment you have a special enrollment period to sign up for part A and/or Part B anytime as long as you or your spouse is working and you’re covered by a group health plan through your em-
ployer or union based and it’s larger than 20 employees insured.
You also have an eighth month special election period to sign up for part A and/or Part B that starts at one of these times:
• The month after the employment ends.
• The month after group health insurance based on current employment ends
You won’t have to pay a late enrollment penalty if you sign up during a special enrollment period such as the two examples written about in this article.
Important!
Cobra and retiree health plans aren’t considered coverage based on current employment. You are not eligible for a special enrollment period when these types of coverage end. Once you activate Medicare then the next step is to decide on your private insurance options that either accompany your original Medicare benefits or replace them such as Medicare Advantage plans. Subject of the Month: Are You Going on Medicare in 2022?
It’s not just a flip of a switch and boom you’re set. Many times I get calls from soon to be Medicare beneficiaries that are agitated. Their first question is how is someone supposed to figure this out on their own? Agreed, and some cases are more complicated that others and that’s where the help of professional like me comes in.
By the way, my services are free, I’m compensated by the insurance companies that I choose to represent.
I’m surprised how many people think that when they are doing their initial step of activating their Medicare Part A and Part B on the Social Security website that at that time they will need to pick their private insurance options. Frequently this is why they procrastinate because they think they need to do all of this research about their Medicare options. That is not the case, that’s where I come in.
For my clients there is approximately an hour consultation to review options discuss their personal needs, answer questions and whatever else is necessary.
