How to be a Kindness Role Model for Our Children
One Book at a Time
“If you can be anything, be kind.”

As parents and educators, we need to make showing kindness a priority and provide the opportunities for our children to practice kindness. As such, we naturally embrace any opportunity to promote kindness – whether random or well-planned. It is in that spirit that we curated a selection of books promoting kindness and related qualities like thoughtfulness, generosity, and empathy. The character education lessons are wrapped in memorable stories about interesting characters, unusual partnerships (a snail and a whale!), and challenging situations -- often overcome with help from friends and their acts of kindness. The heroes of our stories – a Syrian ambulance driver, a track coach, an oak tree – are ordinary in most ways except in their capacity to promote kindness.
Our recommended stories also highlight the fact that qualities like empathy, courage, and self-knowledge are not fixed or finite in any of us –but rather learned (and renewable) resources. In life, as in these stories, even good people, challenged by circumstance or past action, are sometimes unkind and cowardly, are sometimes bystanders when they could have been upstanders. Yet with self-knowledge that comes from experience – and some productive struggle – we all have a nearly infinite capacity to build our empathy muscle and renew our reservoirs of courage.
The richly crafted stories we are recommending will provide children with hours of reading enjoyment and positive role models. Among the many books that celebrate kindness, here are our favorites:
GRADES KINDERGARTEN TO SECOND
Love, Z written and illustrated by Jessie Sima
While out looking for adventure, a young robot named Z finds a message in a bottle signed “Love, Beatrice”. What is love? And who is Beatrice? Those two words are enough to pique Z’s curiosity. Unable to get an answer from the other robots, Z leaves to embark on an adventure to find Beatrice and learn about love. It is on this journey that he learns the powerful meaning of those four simple letters and discovers that what he has been seeking was closer than he realized.
The Snail and the Whale written by Julia Donaldson, illustrated by Axel Scheffler
This is the tale of a tiny snail who dreams to see the world, so she hitches a ride on a humpback whale. Children will love the vibrant art of their journey together past icebergs, jungles, and caves. The story provides the suggestion that brilliant friendships do not necessarily have to be between two similar individuals. The two characters are brought together, and help each other with their differences, not similarities.

Alaa decided to stay and look after the injured people, abandoned cats, and other animals. His love and kindness soon spread and today he is known worldwide as the Cat man of Aleppo.

Raina trips and smashes her two front teeth, she embarks on a long, embarrassing journey of dental treatments. Fitting in at school is hard enough, but this sweet, funny book will encourage kids to believe they can get through troubled times with the help of their true friends and a little bit of kindness.

Wishtree written by Katherine Applegate
This is a beautiful and touching story about nature and friendship. Red, an old oak tree, watches over the neighborhood and the many animals that live in its branches. For decades, the tree has been known as the “wishtree,” where each year people tie their wishes written on strips of cloth, giving Red a special place in the community. One day a new family moves in and they aren’t exactly welcomed with open arms. Red does what any wise, kind old tree would do, and decides to intervene.
Ghost written by Jason Reynolds Castle “Ghost” Crenshaw is on his way to becoming a track star, but can he run fast enough to put his past behind? This book is full of complicated characters, difficult decisions, and opportunities to ask, “What is the right thing to do when you’re being bullied?” Ghost perfectly depicts the challenges kids face on and off the field. Ghost shows them how to face those challenges in an approachable way, and features diverse characters with whom kids can directly relate.
In a world that feels increasingly divisive, being kind makes us feel good and motivates us to perform more acts of kindness. When we role-model kindness and kindness fundamentals like empathy and generosity in ourselves, kids can see them in action and be inspired to practice them as well. And in turn, by teaching our children the importance of compassion and empathy, we can all help build a kinder, more accepting future for everyone.

Tips For Filing Your 2020 Individual & Business Tax Returns
Based upon recent tax & Covid law changes, I can’t think of a more important time to have your tax returns prepared professionally by a CPA. It is critical that you remove the guesswork when you prepare your tax returns. I am ready to help you review your unique situation to determine if any of the following tax planning ideas should be implemented.
INDIVIDUALS
1. Economic Impact Payments and Unemployment Benefits must be Reported. If you didn’t receive the 1st or 2nd round of stimulus payments, filing your tax return will get you these dollars in the form of a credit if you qualify.
2. IRA/Pension Plan withdrawals during 2020 up to $100k can take advantage of special tax provisions if the taxpayer was impacted by Covid. The taxpayer can spread the taxation over 3 years or avoid taxable income by repaying all or part of the distribution within 3 years. Withdrawals made before you are 59.5 years are penalty free.
3. Taxpayers age 70.5 or older can contribute to charities up to $100,000 directly out of their IRA. This reduces AGI and most likely will lower your tax bill. This is a huge tax savings if you are taking the Standard Deduction and no longer claiming charitable deductions.
4. If you had or will have a large capital gain, consider investing in a “Qualified Opportunity Zone” within 180 days of sale or exchange to defer and partially eliminate the initial capital gain in addition to having the potential of
eliminating taxation on appreciation on the new investment property.
5. California tax laws have little conformity to the new Federal tax laws. Due to the differences in Federal and California law, it is quite possible that you will take the Standard Deduction on your Federal Return and Itemize for your California Return. Note: If you are taking the Standard Deduction on your Federal return, you can claim an above the line deduction up to $300 for cash charity contributions for 2020.
6. Taxpayers can change the tax treatment on their IRA contributions as late as the extension deadline for determining if their timely contribution will be treated as Pre-Tax (Traditional), After-Tax (Roth IRA or Non-Deductible IRA). This is important to review prior to finalizing your returns.
BUSINESSES
1. Taxpayers can still apply for the PPP Loan Program (1st Round) if they missed the first opportunity or
apply for a Supplemental (1st round) Loan if forgiveness has not been granted to report recent favorable tax law changes.
2. Taxpayers can apply for another PPP Loan (2nd Round) if their income dropped 25% or more when comparing quarterly gross revenues between comparable 2019/2020 quarters (see rules).
3. Forgiven PPP Loan and EIDL Grant amounts are NOT Federal taxable income and do Not impact the deductibility of applicable expenses. EIDL Grants do NOT reduce your PPP Loan Forgiveness. CA has NOT adopted similar tax treatments. Unless CA changes their mind, CA EIDL Grants are taxable income and PPP Loan expenses that were used for forgiveness must be reduced as lost deductions.
4. Employer Paid Sick & Family Leave-Credits (Form 7202) can be claimed for eligible employers, including the self-employed sole proprietor. See www.irs.gov for Form 7202 instructions.
5. Eligible Employers can qualify for the 40% Employee Retention Credit, even if they received PPP loan proceeds. Wages not used for PPP loan forgiveness can be used to calculate the credit.
6. Section 199A: Taxpayers may deduct up to 20% of their domestic “Qualified Business Income (QBI)”. QBI includes income from S corporations, Partnerships, LLCs taxed as S corporations or partnerships, Schedule C businesses, Schedule F farming activities and self-employment income reported as other income. It is extremely important that you classify your business with an accurate Principal Business Code since this will be a determinant if you qualify for QBI deduction at certain income levels.
7. Review to see if a 401k, SEP-IRA or Defined Benefit Plan is the most beneficial plan for saving pre or after tax. Plans and contributions can now be established/paid for Tax Year 2020 as late as the extended due date for your return in 2021.
8. Important to review your Meals and Entertainment expenses in detail. For Federal purposes, Entertainment is no longer deductible (tickets and entertainment events). Business Meals, Travel Meals and Staff Meals for the Benefit of the Employer, are deductible at 50%. For California tax purposes, Entertainment expenses and Meals per above are deductible at 50%. Therefore, be sure to deduct Entertainment expense on your California return.

I couldn’t have been more excited when my husband and I planned a weekend retreat to La Jolla’s atmospheric the Lodge at Torrey Pines. I’d only seen photos of the sprawling expanse, and on the drive in felt utterly transported - just to the north of the property the Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve showcases 1,750 sprawling acres of unspoiled land that protects its namesake - one of America’s rarest pine trees. By the time we pulled in under the Lodge’s porte-cochere and were greeted by doormen attired in traditional Scottish kilted dress, we knew we were in for an experience unlike any other.

Beyond, you’ll find you’re looking at the Pacific, not the cool Atlantic - but to be honest, I knew I’d be hardpressed to be pulled away from the
cozy poolside cabana. The heated pool, especially during California’s winter months, was just what we all needed to unwind and relax.

ACCOMMODATION + AMENITIES
It’s easy to see why Sunset Magazine rated The Lodge as the #1 Hotel in the West and described it as “one of the most beautiful hotels anywhere.” Our stunning guest accommodation featured the most luxurious Egyptian cotton linens, gorgeous oversized soaking bath, a cozy fireplace, spacious living quarters and breathtaking views of the world-renowned Torrey Pines Golf Course overlooking the California coastline.
We chatted with a couple who raved about the 36-hole facility owned by the City of San Diego, originally designed by William F. Bell. The South Course was redesigned in 2001 by Rees Jones in preparation for the 2008 U.S. Open and is now 7,698
yards with a par of 72. The North Course is 7,258 yards in length with a par of 72.
The Lodge features a full-service spa and state-of-the-art fitness center. Although these may be closed due to state guidelines at the time of your visit, there’s no shortage of open-air recreational opportunities - from outdoor yoga and croquet to golf, guided hikes and of course, the gorgeous heated pool.

Valentien, highlights seasonal cuisine crafted from locally sourced ingredients - delicious dishes we enjoyed “outdoors” in an elegant, open air, timbered dining room. The metal-strap post-and-beam structure, hand-crafted wood framed windows and stained-glass lanterns all a nod to its Southern California heritage and Craftsman architecture and further enhanced by the panoramic views overlooking the 18th hole of the Torrey Pines Golf Course.
For starters, we sampled wonderfully fragrant and flavorful artisanal cheeses paired with spiced nuts and jam followed by a delectable crispy skin sablefish butternut squash tortellini, lobster consommé, pomegranate and preserved orange relish.
During our stay, we also indulged in room service with wood-fired favorites (think chimney roasted chicken and wood-grilled tri-tip). My daughter and I are completely addicted to the charcoal bread avocado toast topped with smashed avocado, fennel, pickled and fresh vegetables, watercress and Everything seasoning and the wood roasted vegetable quinoa (our attempts to replicate the recipes at home came up a little short so she’s already angling for a return trip). My son would eat the Grill’s “Drugstore Hamburger” at every meal if you let him and my strictly meat-and-potatoes husband thoroughly enjoyed the cooked-to-perfection New York Strip paired with a glass of regional wine.

Ralph Waldo Emerson famously said “who you are speaks so loudly I cannot hear what you’re saying.” Keeping this quote in mind has served me well over the years, particularly in choosing friends … and when seeking out the services of professionals. In my opinion, integrity isn’t a word heard often enough in the business world. Competitive, certainly.
But unfortunately phrases like “bottom-line oriented,” “unscrupulous,” even “cutthroat” have cropped up in the vernacular when hearing home improvement gone wrong stories from fellow homeowners. That’s why it was so refreshing to come across Jeff McCabe and his Orange County-based One Way Painting.
In business since 1976, Jeff and his team serve all of the OC and specialize in interior and exterior residential and commercial painting. They swear by the rules of professionalism: “no cutting corners. No cheap materials. We pay attention to every detail, and never call a job complete until the customer is completely satisfied.”
Some might call it good Christian values. Others might say it’s simply good
business. My husband and I can happily attest to both. When we moved into our home in San Juan Capistrano five years ago, we acquired quotes for exterior painting from several contractors, but were particularly impressed with Jeff and his crew. Pets of the Month
One year old Newman is a fun-loving guy with lots of energy. He loves to run and play and would likely make a great jogging or hiking buddy. With liveliness to spare, Newman also probably wouldn’t mind having a similarly active dog as a playmate. He would do best in an active home with experienced adopters who can continue with his training.
Seven year old Arthur is just about as sweet as they come. He is very sociable and loves to hang out in your lap. He also seems to get along well with other small dogs. Arthur doesn’t like to be left alone for long periods of time but would be wonderful for someone who wants a constant companion.
Lindsey is a playful kitten who loves attention. She happily runs right over to greet you when you enter the room. Left to her own devices, Lindsey occupies her time by hunting down toys or a napping peacefully in the sun. Lindsey gets along with other cats, but can be a bit of a diva and would prefer not having to share.

Loaded Inheritance: Safe Gun Storage, Ownership and Disposal with California Gun Services

My grandparents owned a beautiful three bedroom casita in Solana Beach. Just up the road from the train station, their home was built in the twenties, and renovated completely when I was in high school. When my grandfather passed away, I moved in with my grandma, doing chores around the house for her and helping to maintain the garden. One day, I was looking for my grandfather’s whetstone, to sharpen an old pair of shears, and I stumbled across his Colt Python 357 Magnum. I had to look it up - I thought it might be a relic from one of the movies he worked on in the 50’s, but according to my grandma, it was just “one of those things your grandpa just insisted on having.”
Jeff McCabe has gotten more of his fair share of calls from people like myself, who accidentally come across family firearms in their home and don’t have the first idea of what to do with them. The owner of California Gun Services, Jeff is in the business of safe gun storage, ownership and disposal. The first step? Following California gun laws. I had zero clue that by driving the Colt to the Army Navy to try and turn it in I’d be breaking a couple laws. According to Jeff there are laws restricting gifting or selling a gun, receiving a gun, borrowing a gun, transporting a gun, even storing guns. New laws come out every year, and it is almost impossible for anyone, even aficionados to keep up with them. Jeff and his team work closely with local law enforcement to ensure the process is easy and safe.
My grandma hadn’t touched the revolver in years, though my grandfather had made sure she shot it at some canned tomatoes on a desert trip when they were younger. “I’m afraid the grandkids might find it,” she told me that day. “I’d feel safer without it.” A sentiment shared by Jeff’s friends, family and fellow church parishioners - many of whom have sought his assistance over the years to ensure the proper storage or disposal of firearms they found themselves in possession of upon the passing of a loved one.
HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE
What initially started as a favor for a friend has grown into a bonafide side business as word has spread about Jeff’s particular skill set and confidence in handling firearms. As the owner of the Orange-based One Way Painting, Jeff often encountered situations whereby he would come across a firearm when moving furniture around for a client prior to starting a painting project. “Many times, the firearm belonged to my client’s father, grandfather or late husband and she never touched it because she was afraid of guns, but didn’t know how to get rid of it safely. So many times these guns are loaded and just stuck in a nightstand or stored under the bed.”
Raised in a family that had firearms for hunting and sporting, Jeff was taught early on how to handle, be respectful and always be safe when handling firearms. I believe that we as Americans have a great privilege to be able to own a firearm, but with that comes an even greater responsi-
bility to not only protect ourselves legally by complying with Federal and State laws, but to protect ourselves, our neighbors and most importantly, our children from all possible dangers associated with firearms.”
San Clemente resident Rhonda Murphy couldn’t agree more. “There are many things to deal with when a loved one dies. In 2010, when cleaning out my husband’s closet, I came across several of his guns. I didn’t want to keep them and was unsure of what to do with them. My daughters didn’t want the guns and I didn’t want to deal with the hassle of storing them as my grandkids are often at my house. A friend suggested I should call Jeff. He was very nice, easy to talk with, trustworthy and knowledgable. He came to my house, checked all the guns to make sure they were unloaded and removed them. Jeff also told me that one of the guns was a collector’s item and was able to sell it for me. One less thing to have to worry about. I can’t recommend Jeff enough.”
As part of their auditing procedures, California Gun Services gives clients the option of a Voluntary Registration Form (in the case where the weapon was inherited). Many of Jeff’s clients are like my grandma who just prefers that the gun is destroyed. Jeff holds a Federal Firearm License and as such, is able to take possession of firearms without a Gun Transfer. He can also inspect firearms to ensure they are still in working order, and even tell you if the gun, or guns, you have are California Compliant.
“Most people are unaware that firearms that were purchased legally from a gun shop just a year ago may now be illegal in California,” says Jeff. “If we find a firearm that is out of compliance with the law, you’ll receive solid advice on how to make it compliant, sell it out of state, or potentially dispose of it. Our process is approved and certified by local law enforcement, it’s legal, safe and adheres to all state and federal firearms laws.
“Since firearms last more than a lifetime, families often have small and large collections of guns in their home. Knowing what you have and what to do with those firearms is important. Whether it’s from a death in the family, inheritance, or just a need for clearing out some that you know you will never use, we can help. Following California gun laws is essential. We come to you. It’s a safe, easy and professional process.”
California Gun Services’ processes are approved and certified by local law enforcement and adheres to all state and federal firearms laws for the following services:
GUN AUDIT
Jeff will come to you and inspect your firearms to make sure they are in proper working order and that they are California Compliant. If your firearm is not compliant with the California Law, you will receive solid advice on how to make it compliant or possibly dispose or sell it out of state.
GUN DISPOSAL
If a firearm is found to be unsafe to use, cannot be repaired and has no historical value. California Gun Services will permanently destroy it by torching the receiver or frame into three parts or cutting it with a saw into five parts. Jeff will document this with photos and log it for the Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and email you the proof of destruction.
GUN TRANSFERS
Private Party Transfers happen between two individuals and will need to take place at a Federal Firearm Licensed Dealer. Since this needs to be done at a Gun Shop, Jeff cannot offer this as an in-home service. If you have inherited or legally obtain a firearm, he can provide you with a Voluntary Registration form or you can download it from the California Department of Justice which is NOT required to do at a gun shop. California Gun Services has a Federal Firearm License and can legally come to you and take possession of a firearm without a Gun Transfer.
GUN PURCHASES OF UNWANTED FIREARMS OR COLLECTIONS
California Gun Services will come to you and appraise a single gun or an entire collection of any size. You will receive an explanation of how guns are legally sold and transferred. California Gun Services can then make you a fair market value offer and/or explain how a gun can be put up for sale on consignment.

How Can I Tell If I Have Skin Cancer?
There are three main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Because each has many different appearances, it is important to know the early warning signs.
Look especially for change of any kind. Do not ignore a suspicious spot simply because it does not hurt. Skin cancers may be painless, but dangerous all the same. If you notice one or more of the warning signs, see a board-certified dermatologist right away, preferably one who specializes in diseases of the skin.
ACTINIC KERATOSIS
An actinic keratosis (AK) is a crusty, scaly growth caused by damage from exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. An AK is considered a precancer because if left alone, it could develop into a skin cancer. AKs are the product of a lifetime accumulation of UV damage and typically appear on areas most commonly exposed sun, such as the backs of the hands, forearms, face, neck, and scalp.
SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA
Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells arising in the epidermis, the skin’s outermost layer. SCCs often look like scaly red patches, crusty bumps, warts, or elevated growths with a central depression. SCCs may appear suddenly and some forms are tender to touch. They can become disfiguring and sometimes deadly if allowed to grow. More than 1 million cases of SCC are diagnosed each year in the U.S., which translates to about 115 cases diagnosed every hour. Incidence has increased by 200 percent in the past three decades in the U.S., and more than 15,000 Americans die each year from this type of skin cancer.
BASAL CELL CARCINOMA
Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most frequently occurring form of all cancers, with more than 4 million cases of diagnosed in the U.S. each year. BCCs may look like open sores, red patches, pink growths, shiny bumps, or scars. Any skin lesion that doesn’t heal, or bleeds with even gentle trauma, such as drying with a towel, is concerning for a BCC.
MELANOMA
Melanoma is a very dangerous form of skin cancer. Melanoma is caused mainly by intense, occasional UV exposure (frequently leading to sunburn), especially in those who are genetically predisposed to the disease. An estimated 178,560 cases of melanoma are diagnosed in the U.S. each year and is fatal for an estimated 9,320 of these patients. Fortunately, if melanoma is recognized and treated early, it is almost always curable.
WHAT PATIENTS NEED TO KNOW
1. Everyone needs to perform a self-skin exam once a month.
2. Melanoma can appear anywhere on the skin, including the palms/soles, under your nails, and places...for most, have never seen the light of day (genitalia). For this reason, it is important to look everywhere. Lock the bathroom door, get out a hand mirror, and check, it could save your life.
3. What to look for: ABCDEs, and an ugly duckling
A - Asymmetry: If I draw a line down the middle, do the sides match?
B - Border: Is there a nice crisp border, or does the mole melt into the surrounding skin?
C - Color: Moles should be one color, one shade of brown. Is there a variety of shades or additional colors, such as black, red, white, or blue?
D - Diameter: Any mole larger than 6mm, ie the head of a pencil eraser, has a higher risk of becoming melanoma.
E - Evolution: Has it changed?
F - The Ugly Duckling Sign: Most people have a “signature mole,” their own personal mole appearance and architecture. Is there a mole that seems different from all the others?
4. Everyone needs a full body skin exam by a board-certified dermatologist once a year, more frequently if you have a family history of skin cancer, a personal history of skin cancer, or live in an area with substantial sunshine.

What’s Not Covered by Medicare Part A & B
Original Medicare doesn’t cover everything. Some of the items and services Original Medicare doesn’t cover include: long term care; most dental care/dentures; routine eye exams and eyeglasses/contacts; acupuncture; routine hearing tests and hearing aids.
The good news is that there are now options for Medicare supplements (which pay second after Medicare pays first and allow you to go to any doctor that accepts Medicare without a referral) that do! There are Medicare supplements that have additional benefits to cover routine vision exams and give you an eyewear allowance as well as a routine hearing test benefit and set low copays on hearing aids and the fitting exams.
Some other additional benefits include: acupuncture, free fitness memberships to gyms such as LA Fitness, 24 Hour Fitness, the YMCA and more, a quarterly amount of money to spend on over the counter medications, vitamins, oral and eye care products, etc
If you’re already on Medicare with a Medicare supplement you can change to this type of plan anytime in the year (unbeknownst to most). However, you do have to answer underwriting questions so if your health isn’t good, you may be declined. But the good news is that you can change to one of these plans using the birthday rule which guarantees your acceptance as long as you apply during the month of your birthday or within the two months following. My experience has been that the premiums for these plans are competitive to what someone is currently paying for their Medicare supplement that doesn’t have all of these “bells and whistles”.

So, you’re on your own paying for these services if you just have Original Medicare.
The good news is that there are now options for Medicare supplements (which pay second after Medicare pays first and allow you to go to any doctor that accepts Medicare without a referral) that do!
There are Medicare supplements that have additional benefits to cover routine vision exams and give you an eyewear allowance as well as a routine hearing test benefit and set low copays on hearing aids and the fitting exams.
Some other additional benefits include: acupuncture, free fitness memberships to gyms such as LA Fitness, 24 Hour Fitness, the YMCA and more, a quarterly amount of money to spend on over the counter medications, vitamins, oral and eye care products, etc.
If you’re already on Medicare with a Medicare supplement you can change to this type of plan anytime in the year (unbeknownst to most). However, you do have to answer underwriting questions so if your health isn’t good, you may be declined. But the good news is that you can change to one of these plans using the birthday rule which guarantees your acceptance as long as you apply during the month of your birthday or within the two months following. My experience has been that the premiums for these plans are competitive to what someone is currently paying for their Medicare supplement that doesn’t have all of these “bells and whistles”.
Along with this good news for Medicare supplements, there is also the good news that while you do live in a very expensive area and pay a lot for many necessities because of this, you don’t need to pay a premium for a Medicare supplement and a Medicare RX plan because there are Medicare Advantage plans in Orange County that have zero monthly premium and also include your Medicare RX coverage. (These plans are also referred to as Part C-and you must still pay your Medicare Part B premium and Part D IRMAA if you have that assessment)
These plans are offered by private insurance companies that have contracts with Medicare to provide you with your Medicare Part A & B benefits, and while doing so, they go over and above what Original Medicare will pay. Most have no deductible, very few medical copays, low out of pocket maximums (majority are $1000 or less in 2021). Many people I meet with are also surprised at the number of additional benefits these plans offer. All of the previously mentioned additional benefits and much more including dental coverage. In Orange County the only good options in my opinion are the HMO plans, there is too much out of pocket for the very few PPO offerings. I find the majority of OC physicians are in participation with these HMO plans, the key is to making sure all of your physicians are in the same network that participates with the HMO plan. That’s an important part of my job when helping new clients. Sometimes giving up a physician that you rarely see (or didn’t care much for anyway) is necessary for a Medicare Advantage plan to work for you. Either way, I feel the good news is that there are great options for all Medicare beneficiaries, and I’m here to help explain them to you.
