Love and Marriage journeys from three couples at The Covington.

For three couples at The Covington, a premier nonprofit retirement community in Aliso Viejo, perspectives on successful marriage come from first-hand experience. We thought February a good time to speak to them about love and fulfillment in South County, and we were not disappointed with the result. Their journeys through longevity, partnership and commitment have been as distinct and inspiring as the couples themselves.

Vi and Peter Janssen have been married since 1965. They met in college at a music class. “We were college sweethearts,” Vi says. After graduate school, Peter went into the army, and they spent a few years in Germany where their first daughter was born. After completing his service, they returned to Southern California.

With more than 58 years of experience, one of the secrets to their long, happy marriage is expectation. “We knew marriage was a commitment,” Peter says. When they said “I do” they fully expected to be married for a lifetime. Becoming parents made this focus even stronger.

They took a pre-marriage counselling program – yes, they had those in those days too! The Janssens highly recom-

mend it, as it gave them a safe space to share some aspects of themselves and their expectations before they were married. As they look back on their lifetime together, their advice to couples is to learn about each other’s interests and support one another in them.

Vi referenced the poem On Marriage by Kahlil Gibran “… stand together yet not too near together: For the pillars of the temple stand apart… let there be spaces in your togetherness/And let the winds of the heavens dance between you.”

They believe giving each other a blend of space and support has been one of their secrets to a long, happy marriage.

“Being good friends helps when things get tough. And you’ll go through some tough stuff,” Peter says. “We learned to take it one year at a time; but talk continually. Talk about things and don’t hold it in,” he emphasizes.

They both acknowledge that over the years, sharing gets easier. “We respect each other and cherish each other. And a good dose of humor helps!”

Vi and Peter chose The Covington for several reasons. They had been living in San Clemente for 35 years and wanted to stay in the area. After visiting several communities, they chose The Covington because, in Peter’s words, “it was the warmest.” They valued the amenities available and the nonprofit status of the organization, as funds are reinvested in the community, not paid out to shareholders.

When describing their move from their long-term house to their new home at The Covington, Vi says, “it was a smooth transition.” And while they still spend time with their friends from San Clemente, they are developing a whole new group of friends at The Covington. “The people are so welcoming,” she says.

Dale came to Los Angeles from Kansas City, via Iowa in 1958. Marilyn was born in Los Angeles. They met in July 1959 at North American Aviation where Dale was working full time, and Marilyn had a summer job before starting her senior year at USC. It didn’t take long for them to understand there was something special between them. They were married in February 1961.

Marilyn and Dale both came from strong family backgrounds, which instilled in them a commitment to a strong family of their own. This perspective helped when raising their four children.

Drawing on their 63 years of marriage, Dale’s first thought is the mutual respect they hold for each other, and he says

they built that through shared ideals and understanding. “You need to identify your common values,” Dale says. “And be flexible with your expectations.”

Like Vi and Peter Janssen, Marilyn and Dale took a premarriage counselling course. “It led to a lot of discussion, which was good,” she says.” Marilyn adds, “take time to get acquainted.” While they were married after just 18 months, they spent a lot of time talking through important topics before walking down the aisle.

And once a couple is married, Marilyn emphasizes “work at it. Don’t just throw it away.” Both Marilyn and Dale suggest couples focus on their common interests, rather than their differences. “Find common ground. Talk about things,” Dale says.

“As you grow together, your marriage becomes a real partnership,” Marilyn says. “You accept each other as you are.” Over the years, the relationship becomes more comfortable. “And a sense of humor helps,” Dale laughs.

Looking back, Marilyn smiles, “We made the right decision.”

Marilyn and Dale moved to The Covington from their home in Palos Verdes, where they had lived for 50 years. “We were interested in a cottage,” Dale says, “and we knew people who already lived at The Covington, so were familiar with the fantastic amenities.” The nonprofit status was important to The Hoffmans as well. They like how friendly the people are, and especially all the activities available. “The transition was seamless,” he says.

Leslie and Roger Sievers

When Leslie and Roger were young lovers in Ohio, Roger was accepted to study business at Stanford University. Determined to stay together, he and Leslie married and moved west in 1964. This year they will be celebrating 60 years of marriage.

Leslie and Roger lived in the Los Altos community of the Bay Area, however when their son moved to Southern California, they knew that they would be moving at some point as well and followed in 2013.

Roger’s father had lived in a retirement community and had a wonderful experience, while Leslie’s mother had chosen to stay in her primary home, which grew more and more isolating as time progressed. Given this knowledge, they knew which choice they wanted to make. They became residents of The Covington in early 2022.

When Roger and Leslie moved in, they were surprised by the welcome. “I wasn’t expecting how friendly everyone would be,” Roger says. “on our first day, from the moment we emerged from our new place, we were greeted warmly by every single person. “It’s such a positive environment.”

“Our daughter-in-law recently thanked us for moving here,” Leslie continues. “It means that we maintain our independence while not putting the burden of decision making on them.” And should a health event happen, The Covington has the care and expertise available right here.

“And I do not miss meal planning, cleaning up or grocery shopping,” Leslie laughs. The community means that they have more time in their day to pursue their interests.

The secret to their long, happy marriage? First off, Leslie says, “make sure you marry someone you like.” Young love can make you think the person is “perfect from their nose to their toes,” she says. But as you get to know the other person and spend more time with them, you find things you didn’t expect. “You realize they aren’t perfect and neither are you. But if you truly like them, then you enjoy spending time with them,” she says.

“The longer you’re married, the deeper the connection,” Roger says.

Yet as they witnessed, happy marriages can happen at any age. They have watched residents at The Covington meet and fall in love. One couple came together in friendship when both partners lost their spouse. They eventually fell in love and are now married.

One of the best exchanges in the film happens roughly three-quarters of the way through, as Kathleen Kelly and Joe Fox are chatting. (Spoiler alert: this movie came out in 1998, so I don’t feel bad saying the independent bookstore folded.) Joe notes that it wasn’t personal - his superstore taking over the neighborhood- and Kathleen retorts smartly: “All that means is that it wasn’t personal to you. But it was personal to me. (...) Actually, the company isn’t new given that is has been in business since 2015 – but “new” in the sense that the owner has moved into Laguna Woods and will focus on community members in/ around the area.

Before you write this off as “not for me,” there are a few things you should know first. The burgeoning world of home automation is expanding greatly and mostly service two extremes of the market: The Do It Yourself (DIY) “techies” and the high-end wealthy. Not anymore. We sat down with the owner, Gary Russell, to delve into this further.

Question: How did you get started in this industry? What is your background?

Answer: I became interested in the “smart home” around 2012. I did some research and then went to the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) which I did most years. After surveying the various emerging offerings, I was hooked and got the idea for the business.

My background is in systems engineering and program management so starting a business like LiveSmart made perfect sense. I had been at a few different start-ups holding senior level positions which helped with business management and leadership.

& control systems at Raytheon in Fullerton, CA. When you think about it, this is what the smart home is all about. Obtaining sensor information and making decisions automatically based on this information. So ironically a great fit.

Q: What do you see as the main benefits of a smart home?

A: So many. First, things can be automated. Everything from your lights, to temperature settings to gorgeous motorized shades to pool and spa filtration systems. Sort of a “set and forget” type of approach. Plus they are all integrated – meaning the shades can automatically adjust based on temperature or light levels. This not only keeps you more comfortable but also saves money and energy.

The integration is the key and I’ll talk about this more because it’s so important. You don’t want one system (app) for your thermostat, another for your lights and yet another for locks. You want them integrated so that all work together in a holistic system. This doesn’t need to be ghastly expensive anymore. It’s really very affordable and we customize everything for you.

Then there is the “command & control” part whereby you can change the temperature, turn on a light or unlock a door from just about anywhere. This may sound trivial but it’s super powerful.

Q: Can you give an example of how this could be used for a senor community member living alone in their home?

A: I’m glad you asked. Ok, let’s say it’s bed time. You climb into bed and there is a convenient button on the

nightstand. You push that button and the following happens: All lights are turned off. All locks are locked up if by chance any were left unlocked. The thermostat is adjusted to the preferred nighttime temperature. A little light momentarily turns “green” to let you know it’s all secured for the night. A text message is sent to your loved one that reads “All secure at Mom’s place tonight”. Just a single button does all that. Easy, yet powerful.

Q: Besides home automation, what else does LiveSmart provide?

A: In addition to home automation, we install security cameras and help homes and small businesses with their networking needs. Real simple things like setting up your network, ensuring best WiFi coverage, ensuring all printers and scanners work well, etc. All very affordable.

There are three main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Because each has many different appearances, it is important to know the early warning signs.

Look especially for change of any kind. Do not ignore a suspicious spot simply because it does not hurt. Skin cancers may be painless, but dangerous all the same. If you notice one or more of the warning signs, see a board-certified dermatologist right away, preferably one who specializes in diseases of the skin.

ACTINIC KERATOSIS

An actinic keratosis (AK) is a crusty, scaly growth caused by damage from exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. An AK is considered a precancer because if left alone, it could develop into a skin cancer. AKs are the product of a lifetime accumulation of UV damage and typically appear on areas most commonly exposed sun, such as the backs of the hands, forearms, face, neck, and scalp.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells arising in the epidermis, the skin’s outermost layer. SCCs often look like scaly red patches, crusty bumps, warts, or elevated growths with a central depression. SCCs may appear suddenly and some forms are tender to touch. They can become disfiguring and sometimes deadly if allowed to grow. More than 1 million cases of SCC are diagnosed each year in the U.S., which translates to about 115 cases diagnosed every hour. Incidence has increased by 200 percent in the past three decades in the U.S., and more than 15,000 Americans die each year from this type of skin cancer.

BASAL CELL CARCINOMA

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most frequently occurring form of all cancers, with more than 4 million cases of diagnosed in the U.S. each year. BCCs may look like open sores, red patches, pink growths, shiny bumps, or scars. Any skin lesion that doesn’t heal, or bleeds with even gentle trauma, such as drying with a towel, is concerning for a BCC.

MELANOMA

Melanoma is a very dangerous form of skin cancer. Melanoma is caused mainly by intense, occasional UV exposure (frequently leading to sunburn), especially in those who are genetically predisposed to the disease. An estimated 178,560 cases of melanoma are diagnosed in the U.S. each year and is fatal for an estimated 9,320 of these patients. Fortunately, if melanoma is recognized and treated early, it is almost always curable.

WHAT PATIENTS NEED TO KNOW

1. Everyone needs to perform a self-skin exam once a month.

2. Melanoma can appear anywhere on the skin, including the palms/soles, under your nails, and places...for most, have never seen the light of day (genitalia). For this reason, it is important to look everywhere. Lock the bathroom door, get out a hand mirror, and check, it could save your life.

3. What to look for: ABCDEs, and an ugly duckling

A - Asymmetry: If I draw a line down the middle, do the sides match?

B - Border: Is there a nice crisp border, or does the mole melt into the surrounding skin?

C - Color: Moles should be one color, one shade of brown. Is there a variety of shades or additional colors, such as black, red, white, or blue?

D - Diameter: Any mole larger than 6mm, ie the head of a pencil eraser, has a higher risk of becoming melanoma.

E - Evolution: Has it changed?

F - The Ugly Duckling Sign: Most people have a “signature mole,” their own personal mole appearance and architecture. Is there a mole that seems different from all the others?

4. Everyone needs a full body skin exam by a board-certified dermatologist once a year, more frequently if you have a family history of skin cancer, a personal history of skin cancer, or live in an area with substantial sunshine.

Q Does white really go with fish/seafood and red with red meat or is there some overlap?

A When in doubt the white with seafood and red with red meat is a good rule. But of course, there’s definitely some overlap here when getting into the details. There are some fantastic lighter bodied red wines out there that can easily be paired with fish and other seafoods. Some of my favorites are Pinot Noir, Beaujolais, and Grenache, each of them have a light body with very light tannins, won’t overpower the delicate fish. And for red meats you can easily pour a full bodied white wine that has high acidity, think California Chardonnays, white Rhone blends, Rieslings and Chenin Blancs. All of these have nice body that can stand up to high fat red meats, and nice acidity that can shine through some of the more robust seasonings and marinades that are used to cook them.

Q Does the shape/size of the wine glass make a difference?

A This is one of those topics that I wish people took more seriously! In short, yes, the shape and size of the glass makes a huge difference! Wine glasses are designed with very specific shapes and sizes to help deliver wine aromas to your nose. If search “red wine glass” and “white wine glass” you’ll notice red wine glasses are much bigger and more bowl shaped, that’s because there are vapors coming off the wine as the alcohol slowly evaporates, those vapors are filled with compounds that help you taste the wine. White wines a typically chilled and won’t give off as much aromas, therefore the glass doesn’t need to be as large. Another reason for the smaller shape for whites is they don’t need need to aerate like reds do, less surface area reduces aeration and keeps the wine cooler. Reds on the other hand love to aerate and

therefore need all the surface area to slowly oxidize (in a good way). The bowl-shaped narrower opening at the top of the glass does two things that are both very important: 1) It helps trap the aromas into a smaller area to help you small them. Think about how much more difficult it would be to smell wine in a cereal bowl with an 8 inch opening than a wine glass with a 2 inch opening. 2) It helps keep the wine in the glass when you swirl the heck out of it, which you should do! I love swirling wine, it introduces oxygen (good oxidation) into the wine and gets all those great aromas swirling around the glass for you to smell!

Q Should I decant wine before I drink it?

A good sommelier is a helper, a guide to finding the best wine for your food and experience. For this month’s installment, we again approached South County-based sommelier Micah Sampson for a bit of education about the wine/food pairings, whether the size and shape of the glass makes a difference and whether wine should be decanted before its served. A Decanting can do wonders for your wine, but it isn’t always necessary. You should have a nice decanter at home if you’re serious about enjoying some great red wines (don’t worry about decanting white wines), and that decanter should have a nice wide bottom that creates a ton of surface area when the wine is poured in, and a narrow top that keeps too much air from getting introduced and makes it easy to pour a glass. The types of red wines you’re decanting are usually full bodied reds that usually have a some age on them (like 5-10+ years), not those cheap red blends you’re buying for $8.99 at the market. The idea behind decanting is you’re introducing oxygen into the wine and a chemical change is happening, a lot of those volatile compounds (bad aromas) are evaporating off and the harsher tannins are softening up a bit, which allows you to enjoy the wine more. So, if you have a 2010 Barolo or a 2015 Napa Cabernet, let those bad boys decant for 30-60 minutes, maybe take some small sips and smells during that time so you can see how the wine changes.

Nearly a decade ago our family embarked on an ambitious plan to visit all 50 states as a family by the time our then-seven-yearold son graduates from high school. Now a junior, he and his 15-year-old younger sister are a pair of particularly well-traveled teens. Having crossed Alabama, Mississippi and Oklahoma off the list over the holiday break, we have 18 months to experience the remaining two states (Vermont and Michigan).

Growing up with dreams of voyaging to far-flung locales but without the means to travel during my own childhood, I have to admit I might’ve lived vicariously through my own offspring over the years - viewing each destination through the wide-eyed lens of youth and exuberance.

Thankfully my teenagers still seem to be enthusiastic adventurers today - a trait I hope will continue throughout their lives. Like many of their peers, their phones are always on their person, but I’m happy to report that the majority of the time spent on our family sojourns are screen free.

Such was the case from the moment we landed in Birmingham, a city characterized by Southern hospitality and contemporary charm, followed by a tour through Tupelo and ending in Oklahoma City – a trip that checked the boxes for education, entertainment, culture and cuisine (sampling several of the South’s best barbecue).

A HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE

Founded along two rail lines in the late 19th century, Birmingham boasts a storied history as an industrial town, renowned for its iron and steel production which led to its popular monikers “Iron City” and “Magic City,” the latter due to the fact that coal, iron ore and limestone (the three materials necessary to make steel) were all found in short distances from the 1st Avenue railroad.

From the solemn streets of the Civil Rights District downtown to the extensive trails of Red Mountain to the lively bars and restaurants of Lakeview and Five Points South neighborhoods, the state’s largest city offers something for everyone, particularly history buffs, outdoor enthusiasts, foodies and music lovers.

We visited during the winter to accommodate the kids school break and while the air was crisp, it was layering

weather. We’re told the best time to visit Birmingham is from March to May when the flowers and festival season are in full bloom and the temperate climate ideal for a myriad of outdoor activities.

WHERE TO STAY

Literally less than 10 minutes driving distance from the airport, the historic Hampton Inn & Suites Tutwiler Hotel (Hilton.com) – Magic City’s first modern hotel – proved to be the perfect home base from which to embark on our Birmingham adventures each day. From the grand marble entrance to the spacious guest rooms (our accommodation with two queen beds and a sofa bed provided plenty of space to stretch out) – all with expansive

windows highlighting the cityscape –and abundant amenities (full complimentary breakfast, snack shop, fitness center, on site restaurant and bar), this boutique hotel is a beautiful blend of old and new.

Known in its early days as the “Grand Dame of Southern Hotels, The Tutwiler was a major hub for political, business and social gatherings. Guests ranged from President Warren G. Harding, Charles Lindbergh, First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt and Babe Ruth. Ideally situated in the heart of downtown, this 100+ year old hotel continues to house scores of dignitaries, celebrities and visitors each year.

Our weekend began with a walking tour of the Civil Rights District led by native Alabamian Barry McNealy - a six-block stroll through the city’s history at a time when Birmingham was still deeply segregated. Our guide regaled us with tales surrounding several pivotal events, stopping at a number of churches, businesses, and other gathering places that played a fundamental role at the dawn of the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s.

We learned that Birmingham pastor and civil rights activist Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth joined Martin Luther King Jr. to lead a series of nonviolent actions here in the early 1960s. The service was excellent and the ambiance akin to a favorite locals hangout.

Voted best barbecue in Alabama, SAW’s has six equally unassuming establishments in the city – the location we chose at the recommendation of the valet at our hotel was the original restaurant in nearby Homewood. Guests order at the counter, fill their own fountain drinks and grab a seat to await a hefty portion of slow-smoked meats. In our case, Styrofoam trays arrived piled high with smoked chicken quarters, meaty pork ribs and pulled pork along with staple Southern sides like deviled eggs, cheese grits and a mound of crisp-fried onion rings.

For this trip, I thought it might be fun to designate an afternoon of the vacation to each of the kids and put them in charge of picking out which activity the family would participate in, which food we’d eat, etc. After gaining a bit better understanding of how the Civil Rights Movement shaped Birmingham, we whiled away a couple of hours at the McWane Science Center. As the cornerstone of the city’s revitalization project, this hands-on stateof-the-art museum (similar to the Discovery Science Center in Santa Ana) allows of all ages to see, hear, touch, and experience the wonder of science in one of the South’s most unique venues.

Not surprisingly, my daughter selected the 122-acre Birmingham Zoo as her top choice. She particularly loves animals great and small and we’ve strolled through many a zoo in our travels. As one of the state’s most popular attractions, guests arrive from all over the region to get up close to approximately 550 animals of 180 species and endangered species from six continents, including red pandas, lions, reticulated giraffes, Sumatran orangutans, rhinos, bears, elephants, zebras, a jaguar and black-handed spider monkeys. The highlight of the trip for my auto enthusiast husband was The Barber Motorsports Park - an 880-acre, multi-purpose racing facility located on the city’s eastern fringes which

includes the Barber Vintage Motorsport Museum, named “World’s Largest Motorcycle Museum” by the Guinness World Records.

There was certainly no shortage of activities to fill a weekend away - National Landmarks, Civil Rights memorials and the Railroad Park Foundation. A Museum of Flight, Hall of Fame, Museum of Art, and more. We might need another trip to check everything off the list!

DAY-TRIPPING IN TUPELO

About an hour and a half drive from Birmingham lies a homegrown getaway – an ideal day trip to Tupelo to cross Mississippi off our 50 States list. The tiny town’s (rightful) claim to fame is that it is the birthplace of Elvis Presley so we thought

it’d be an interesting afternoon paying homage to The King at Tupelo’s main attraction: Elvis Presley Birthplace (ElvisPresleyBirthplace.com). Well worth the drive, you’ll easily spend a couple of hours exploring the well-curated, sprawling grounds that traces the superstar’s humble roots – the two-room home he was born in with no electricity or running water that his father built using $180 he borrowed for supplies, the actual building where Elvis and his family attended church services (it was here that he was first introduced to the rich, Southern gospel that inspired much of his music throughout his career), a small museum and gift shop.

Overseen by Executive Director Roy Turner (a local who like Elvis grew up on the “wrong side” of the tracks in Tupelo), the museum artfully charts the Presley family history, the young musician’s rise to fame and the impact Tupelo had on Elvis throughout his life. I have to admit the depth and breadth of my knowledge of Elvis was limited to familiarity with some of his more iconic songs and the recent (excellent) 2022 movie of the same name. So it was particularly inspiring to learn the story of Elvis’ early years and how he used his creative gifts to lift himself and his family out of poverty.

(pun intended) role in the timeline of American music when it sold Elvis his first guitar in 1946. It seems the then 11-year-old had his sights set on a rifle and his mother walked him into the store with the intention of buying him a bicycle. As a compromise, Elvis got a guitar – and the rest is history.

I haven’t been to Graceland in Memphis, but I expect that even the most ardent of fans will have a deeper appreciation after visiting the Elvis Birthplace & Museum having personally witnessed where the legend began.

NEXT STOP: OKLAHOMA CITY

On the way back to SoCal, we stopped for two days in OKC to round out our multi-state excursion. We spent a solemn afternoon at the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum. I remember watching the national tragedy unfold in the moments, days and weeks following the bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building –a heinous act of domestic terrorism that killed 168 people, including 19 children and injured hundreds more.

For my teenage kids, the events of April 19, 1995 were something they’d only read about in history books. For both generations, the national park site serves as a poignant symbol of unspeakable loss and a tribute to the strength of the human spirit. The “take it at your own pace” museum experience is an emotional one, as visitors follow a chronological timeline of events via an interactive tour which combines exhibits, archived news footage, newspaper features and video recordings of survivors, surviving family members and first responders to “remember those who were killed, those who survived and those changed forever.”

OKC ENTERTAINMENT

As recent as 1990, Bricktown (then known as the Waterfront District) wasn’t a place anyone wanted to visit, particularly after dark – the area defined by dilapidated buildings and high crime. Today, after a major revitalization project that included the creation of a canal and the opening

of the Bricktown Water Taxi, the area is now a booming entertainment destination populated with businesses like Bass Pro Shop and a 16-screen movie theater, scores of shops and restaurants. Nearby attractions include the American Banjo Museum and the Chicksaw Bricktown Ballpark.

The Bricktown Water Taxi (BricktownWaterTaxi.com) provided a great water’s view introduction to the gorgeous landscape and artwork along the canal, including the Oklahoma Land Run of 1889 when folks rushed in on horseback, by carriage and stagecoach to claim 160-acre plots of land. Created by native Oklahoman artist Paul Moore at the canal’s edge the Centennial Land Run Monument commemorates the historic event and at 365 feet long and 16 feet tall, the artwork is one of the world’s largest freestanding bronze sculptures.

Within walking distance to Bricktown is the Paycom Center, arena home to the Oklahoma Thunder. We caught the NBA team’s annual New Year’s Eve game against the Brooklyn Nets where the energy and excitement was palpable even from our nosebleed seats as the Thunder continued their hot streak to close out the calendar year with their fourth consecutive win.

A gem of an experience was time spent at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum (nationalcowboymuseum.org). The descriptions on its website simply doesn’t do justice to the size and scope of the site that pays homage to what is arguably the birthplace of the Wild West. Situated on Persimmon Hill in northeast Oklahoma City since 1955, the museum features an expansive collection of western paintings, sculptures and artifacts that help to interpret the cowboy’s history and Native American culture from the late 1800s to modern day. There are several stylishly organized galleries –including Art of the American West, the American Cowboy Gallery and our family’s favorite – a stroll through Prosperity Junction, a replica turn-of-thecentury cattle town.

Medicare Part B Costs Increase in 2024

The majority of Medicare beneficiaries don’t’ pay a premium each month for Part A, but they do for Part B. Their Part B premium will be automatically deducted from their social security check and if they aren’t taking social security yet then they get a bill from the Medicare (aka the government). The standard premium for Medicare Part B (outpatient and doctor services) in 2023 was $164.90. In 2024 it will increase to $174.70. So, the reprieve you had last year with the Part B premium decrease has gone away, and once again there is an increase in your Medicare Part B premium.

The Medicare Part B deductible also increased; from $226 in 2023 to $240 in 2024.

If your modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) is above a certain amount, you will pay an Income Related Adjustment Amount (IRMAA). Medicare uses the modified adjusted gross income reported on your IRS tax return from 2 years ago. The IRS provides this information to Social Security. Notices for your IRMAA amounts have begun to arrive in the mail for 2024, so keep an eye out for that to avoid any surprises in the new year.

There are 5 higher income brackets that cause a person to pay more for their Medicare Part B and an added assessment to their Part D (drug) coverage. In 2024 IRMAA will be assessed when an individual’s MAGI is above $103,000 and a married couple’s MAGI is above $206,000.

California Gun Services Safe Gun Storage, Ownership and Disposal

After my grandfather passed away, I moved in with my grandma, doing chores around the house and helping to maintain the garden.

One day, I was looking for my grandfather’s whetstone, to sharpen an old pair of shears, and I stumbled across his Colt Python 357 Magnum. I thought it might be a relic from one of the movies he worked on in the 50’s, but according to my grandma, it was just “one of those things your grandpa just insisted on having.”

Jeff McCabe has gotten more of his fair share of calls from people like myself, who accidentally come across family firearms in their home and don’t have the first idea of what to do with them. The owner of California Gun Services (CGS), Jeff is in the business of safe gun storage, ownership and disposal. The first step? Following California gun laws. I had zero clue that by driving the Colt to the Army Navy to try and turn it in, I’d be breaking a couple laws. According to Jeff there are laws restricting gifting or selling a gun, receiving a gun, borrowing a gun, transporting a gun, even storing guns. New laws come out every year, and it is almost impossible for anyone, even aficionados to keep up with them. Jeff and his team work closely with local law enforcement to ensure the process is easy and safe.

My grandma was afraid the grandkids might find it and would “just feel safer without it.” A sentiment shared by Jeff’s friends, family and fellow church parishionersmany of whom have sought his assistance over the years to ensure the proper storage or disposal of firearms they found themselves in possession of upon the passing of a loved one.

A BUSINESS IS BORN

What initially started as a favor for a friend has grown into a bonafide side business as word has spread about Jeff’s particular skill set and confidence in handling firearms. As the owner of the Orange-based One Way Painting, Jeff often encountered situations whereby he would come across a firearm when moving furniture around for a client prior to starting a painting project.

“Many times, the firearm belonged to my client’s father, grandfather or late husband and she never touched it because she was afraid of guns, but didn’t know how to get rid of it safely,” he says. “So many times these guns are loaded and just stuck in a nightstand or stored under the bed.”

Over the years, Jeff has encountered a variety of different circumstances where individuals seek his assistance in disposing of unwanted firearms. All situations call for professionalism and expertise, but some also require a more delicate approach. One such case was a recent call by a family whose patriarch was once a responsible gun owner, but was now suffering the early signs of dementia.

“His family wanted the firearms removed for safety reasons, but the gentleman lawfully owns the guns so it’s important to have a heightened sensitivity so as not to create upset,” says Jeff.

In addition to lay people looking for help, Jeff and his team also assist estate and probate attorneys representing

clients who are surviving family members in possession of unwanted firearms to navigate the process of safe gun disposal.

Raised in a family that had firearms for hunting and sporting, Jeff was taught early on how to handle, be respectful and always be safe when handling firearms. Jeff adds that “ … we as Americans have a great privilege to be able to own a firearm, but with that comes an even greater responsibility to not only protect ourselves legally by complying with Federal and State laws, but to protect ourselves, our neighbors and most importantly, our children from all possible dangers associated with firearms.”

San Clemente resident Rhonda Murphy couldn’t agree more. “There are many things to deal with when a loved one dies. In 2010, when cleaning out my husband’s closet, I came across several of his guns. I didn’t want to keep them and was unsure of what to do with them. My daughters didn’t want the guns and I didn’t want to deal with the hassle of storing them as my grandkids are often at my house. A friend suggested I call Jeff. He was very nice, easy to talk with, trustworthy and knowledgeable. He came to my house, checked all the guns to make sure they were unloaded and removed them. Jeff also told me that one of the guns was a collector’s item and was able to sell it for me. One less thing to have to worry about. I can’t recommend Jeff enough.”

As part of their auditing procedures, California Gun Services gives clients the option of a Voluntary Registration Form (in the case where the weapon was inherited). Many of Jeff’s clients are like my grandma who just prefers that the gun is destroyed. Jeff holds a Federal Firearm License and as such, is able to take possession of firearms without a Gun Transfer. He can also inspect firearms to ensure they are still in working order, and even tell you if the gun, or guns, you have is California Compliant.

“Most people are unaware that firearms that were purchased legally from a gun shop just a year ago may now be illegal in California,” says Jeff. “If we find a firearm that is out of compliance with the law, you’ll receive solid advice on how to make it compliant, sell it out of state, or potentially dispose of it. Our process is approved and certified by local law enforcement, it’s legal, safe and adheres to all state and federal firearms laws.

GUN AUDIT

Jeff will come to you and inspect your firearms to make sure they are in proper working order and that they are California Compliant. If your firearm is not compliant with the California Law, you will receive solid advice on how to make it compliant or possibly dispose or sell it out of state.

GUN DISPOSAL

If a firearm is found to be unsafe to use, cannot be repaired and has no historical value. California Gun Services will permanently destroy it by torching the receiver or frame into three parts or cutting it with a saw into five parts. Jeff will document this with photos and log it for the Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and email you the proof of destruction.

GUN TRANSFERS

Private Party Transfers happen between two individuals and will need to take place at a Federal Firearm Licensed Dealer. Since this needs to be done at a Gun Shop, Jeff cannot offer this as an in-home service. If you have inherited or legally obtain a firearm, he can provide you with a Voluntary Registration form or you can download it from the California Department of Justice which is NOT required to do at a gun shop. California Gun Services has a Federal Firearm License and can legally come to you and take possession of a firearm without a Gun Transfer.

GUN PURCHASES OF UNWANTED FIREARMS OR COLLECTIONS

California Gun Services will come to you and appraise a single gun or an entire collection of any size. You will receive an explanation of how guns are legally sold and transferred. California Gun Services can then make you a fair market value offer and/or explain how a gun can be put up for sale on consignment.

AMMUNITION AUDIT

California Gun Services will make sure you are using the right ammunition for the firearms that you have and that it is legal in the State of California. Jeff will inspect the ammunition to make sure that it has been stored correctly, is in good condition and will ensure that the ammunition is being stored properly, using the right type of container and stored in the right location in your home.

This blue-eyed beauty is Independence, a gorgeous red-and-white Dutch dwarf spayed female rabbit. One year old, Indy is a sweet and curious bunny who enjoys exploring her surroundings. While she doesn’t like being held for long periods of time, she is treat motivated and doesn’t mind nice petting sessions. Indy has great litter box habits and would be a wonderful addition to a quiet home.

Turning 65

It’s A Milestone for Sure…

Most commonly now you apply for Medicare on the Social Security website: www.ssa.gov (or you can call 800-772-1213 to make a phone appointment to apply over the phone).

This is only if you’re not taking Social Security earlier than your fully vested age. You’ll get your Medicare card automatically if you are already taking Social Security early (You can start at age 62). Your Medicare card will arrive about 3-4 months before the month of your birthday if this scenario pertains to you.

For those of you not taking Social Security early, you’ll want to start the Medicare Part A & B application process 3 months before your birthday month to make sure you’re good to go on the first day of the month that you turn 65 (unless you’re born on the 1st, then you get to go on Medicare one month early).

Once you apply for Medicare you will receive a letter in a few weeks from Social Security saying they’ve received your application and it was approved. Then a second letter arrives, and it gives you your Medicare number and that letter then tells you that you’ll be receiving your Medicare card in several weeks. This is a big milestone financially for most because of the cost of their health insurance if they are paying for it privately (group insurance can be expensive too however). Most people

(who am I kidding, everyone!) can hardly wait to start saving money (At age 64 rates are over $1000 a month for health insurance coverage. Once you get your “Original Medicare” card (paper; red, white and blue with a random alpha-numeric combination and a Part A and Part B effective date on it) you have choices to make.

Medicare alone is not enough, and that’s where I come in to help you understand your Medicare options. Medicare Advantage plans, Medicare Supplement (Medi-gap) plans and Medicare Drug plans are complex and the fact that you can have my knowledge (at no cost to you) to help you decide the right choice for you at this “decision dilemma” in your life will give you peace of mind.
