TIPS FOR FILING YOUR 2021 INDIVIDUAL & BUSINESS TAX RETURNS
Based upon recent tax law changes, now is one of the most important times to have your tax returns prepared professionally by a CPA. It is critical that you remove the guesswork when you prepare your tax returns. My team and I are ready to help you review your unique situation to determine if any of the following tax planning ideas should be implemented.
INDIVIDUALS
1. Economic Impact Payments, Child Tax Credits and Unemployment Benefits must be Reported. Be sure to provide your CPA with the details of any stimulus payments received in order to file a complete and accurate return.
2. Pay careful attention to the tax filing deadlines: due date & extension deadlines. S Corporation and Partnership returns are due on March 15 (Extensions due September 16). Individual, Trust and C Corp returns are due on April 18 (Extensions for Individual & C Corp due on October 17 and Trusts on September 30).
3. Taxpayers aged 70.5 or older can contribute to charities up to $100,000 directly out of their IRA. This reduces adjusted gross income (AGI) and most likely will lower your tax bill. This is a huge tax savings opportunity if you are taking the standard deduction and no longer claiming charitable deductions.
4. If you had or will have a large capital gain, consider investing in a “Qualified Opportunity Zone” within 180 days of sale or exchange to defer and partially eliminate the initial capital gain in addition to having the potential of eliminating taxation on appreciation on the new investment property.
5. Depreciation expense rules have been expanded to allow greater deductibility on capital asset purchases including autos and qualified real property. The capability to determine how much you want to
depreciate in the current year is a great tax planning opportunity to help you fine tune the desired level of taxable income for 2021 and future years.
6. Anyone who receives employer stock options should seek a CPA for tax preparation. The Form 1099-B you receive doesn’t correctly report your cost basis and many taxpayers mistakenly pay tax twice on the gains.
7. California tax laws have little conformity to the new Federal tax laws. Due to the differences in Federal and California law, it is quite possible that you will take the standard deduction on your federal return and itemize for your California Return. Note: If you are taking the standard deduction on your federal return, you can claim an above the line deduction up to $600 (joint) or $300 (single) for cash charity contributions for 2021. For example, moving expenses are only deductible on the CA return, not federal.
8. Taxpayers can change the tax treatment on their IRA contributions as late as the extension deadline for determining if their timely contribution will be treated as Pre-Tax (Traditional), After-Tax (Roth IRA or NonDeductible IRA). This is important to review prior to finalizing your returns.
9. Due to increased ID theft activity, taxpayers should consider using the IRS Identity Protection (PIN Program) to obtain a Tax Filing PIN to help secure and protect their tax return refund and filing. See IRS Pub. 5367. Additionally, Sole Proprietors should also obtain a separate Tax ID number for their business instead of using their social security number.
BUSINESSES
1. New CA Law allows Shareholders who receive K-1Forms from LLCs, S Corps and Partnerships to have the business pay their CA personal income tax on the gain being reported on the K-1. This payment reduces the Federal taxable income on the K-1 and allows the shareholder to be able to deduct state income taxes that are limited to $10,000 as personal taxpayers (SALT limitation). 2. Taxpayers who received PPP Loans must have applied for forgiveness. Federal and California tax laws can differ on whether the loan is forgiven or taxable.
4. Employer Paid Sick & Family Leave-Credits (Form 7202) can be claimed for eligible employers, including the self-employed sole proprietor. See www.irs.gov for Form 7202 instructions.
5. Eligible Employers can qualify for the 40% Employee Retention Credit, even if they received PPP loan proceeds. Wages not used for PPP loan forgiveness can be used to calculate the credit.
6. Section 199A: Taxpayers may deduct up to 20% of their domestic “Qualified Business Income (QBI)”. QBI includes income from S Corps, partnerships, LLCs taxed as S Corps or partnerships, Schedule C businesses, Schedule F farming activities and selfemployment income reported as other income. It is extremely important that you classify your business with an accurate Principal Business Code since this will be a determinant if you qualify for QBI deduction at certain income levels.
10. Review to see if a 401k, Defined Benefit or SEP-IRA Plan is the most beneficial plan for saving pre or aftertax. Plans and contributions can now be established/ paid for Tax Year 2021 as late as the extended due date for your return in 2022.
11. Important to review your meals and entertainment expenses in detail. For federal purposes, entertainment is no longer deductible (tickets and entertainment events). For tax years 2021and 2022, business/travel restaurant meals are fully deductible at 100%. Staff meals for the benefit of the employer, are deductible at 50%. For California tax purposes, entertainment expenses and meals per above are deductible at 50%. Remember to deduct entertainment expense on your California return.

You’ve Got a Friend in Me
Friendship is special and precious. It feeds our soul, comforts our spirit, and inspires our intellect. As one of life’s great joys, good friendships should be celebrated –especially ones that last a lifetime.
For Pat Beery and Shirley Forden, their friendship spans 70 years, and it all started on the campus of UCSB as members of Sigma Kappa, one of the oldest sororities in the country.
In the 1950s, UCSB was known as Santa Barbara College of the University of California. During the post-war years universities expanded access to education, especially for women. In those days, Pat says women had fewer choices. “An education gave us opportunity and independence.” For Shirley, the sorority was a vital part of her experience, “We supported each other as we chased our dreams.”
Sigma Kappa offered an important social network for members, many of whom were away from home for the first time. “We worked hard but we also had fun,” laughs Shirley. They have fond memories of their time on campus and enjoyed going to dances together. Occasionally, Pat would invite her brother along as an escort. “Of course, he loved it. I introduced him to his future wife, another one of my sorority sisters.”
Both women felt fortunate to be able to continue their education and were determined to make the most of the opportunity. Shirley graduated as an Art Major in 1955 and taught art in middle school. Pat graduated in 1956 with a degree in Early Childhood Education and became an elementary school teacher.
They are proud of their accomplishments and proud to know their example inspired future generations of women in their families. Pat’s daughter had a lengthy career as a teacher in the California public school system and Shirley’s granddaughter has recently taken up a teaching post in New York City.
Over the years, they stayed in touch socially and through the Sigma Kappa alumni association where they helped to raise money for charity. “We organized an annual Boutique Fair,” says Shirley, “it was a going concern.” The Fair offered handmade items from local artisans and craftspeople and Pat says that the focus on the community was a key to its success. “People loved it.”

dividends again later in life. For each of them, the time came to plan their next move. Pat said once she stopped driving, she felt isolated in her own home. For Shirley, her family was anxious about her daily safety as she aged. “They we’re constantly wanting to check on me.”
The women had a mutual sorority sister who lived at The Covington in Aliso Viejo, and occasionally they would visit. “We would dine together in the on-property restaurant, and I was always so impressed by the delicious food,” says Pat.
The quality of dining and accommodations, the vibrant lifestyle and continuum of care were all important factors in the eventual decision that each women made to make their home at The Covington. Having friends already living on campus made the transition that much easier. “It almost feels like we are back at our sorority house,” Shirley says, “but with more comfortable beds!”

philosophy of life-long learning, were also important considerations. “I so appreciate being able to continue to paint and make pottery.”
Pat, who moved in last year, has since met another old friend already living at The Covington. “I had not seen her in years. It has been so wonderful to reconnect and catch up. I know I am not the only person who has had this experience.”

How Can I Tell If I Have Skin Cancer?
There are three main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Because each has many different appearances, it is important to know the early warning signs.
Look especially for change of any kind. Do not ignore a suspicious spot simply because it does not hurt. Skin cancers may be painless, but dangerous all the same. If you notice one or more of the warning signs, see a board-certified dermatologist right away, preferably one who specializes in diseases of the skin.
ACTINIC KERATOSIS
An actinic keratosis (AK) is a crusty, scaly growth caused by damage from exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. An AK is considered a precancer because if left alone, it could develop into a skin cancer. AKs are the product of a lifetime accumulation of UV damage and typically appear on areas most commonly exposed sun, such as the backs of the hands, forearms, face, neck, and scalp.
SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA
Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells arising in the epidermis, the skin’s outermost layer. SCCs often look like scaly red patches, crusty bumps, warts, or elevated growths with a central depression. SCCs may appear suddenly and some forms are tender to touch. They can become disfiguring and sometimes deadly if allowed to grow. More than 1 million cases of SCC are diagnosed each year in the U.S., which translates to about 115 cases diagnosed every hour. Incidence has increased by 200 percent in the past three decades in the U.S., and more than 15,000 Americans die each year from this type of skin cancer.
BASAL CELL CARCINOMA
Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most frequently occurring form of all cancers, with more than 4 million cases of diagnosed in the U.S. each year. BCCs may look like open sores, red patches, pink growths, shiny bumps, or scars. Any skin lesion that doesn’t heal, or bleeds with even gentle trauma, such as drying with a towel, is concerning for a BCC.
MELANOMA
Melanoma is a very dangerous form of skin cancer. Melanoma is caused mainly by intense, occasional UV exposure (frequently leading to sunburn), especially in those who are genetically predisposed to the disease. An estimated 178,560 cases of melanoma are diagnosed in the U.S. each year and is fatal for an estimated 9,320 of these patients. Fortunately, if melanoma is recognized and treated early, it is almost always curable.
WHAT PATIENTS NEED TO KNOW
1. Everyone needs to perform a self-skin exam once a month.
2. Melanoma can appear anywhere on the skin, including the palms/soles, under your nails, and places...for most, have never seen the light of day (genitalia). For this reason, it is important to look everywhere. Lock the bathroom door, get out a hand mirror, and check, it could save your life.
3. What to look for: ABCDEs, and an ugly duckling
A - Asymmetry: If I draw a line down the middle, do the sides match?
B - Border: Is there a nice crisp border, or does the mole melt into the surrounding skin?
C - Color: Moles should be one color, one shade of brown. Is there a variety of shades or additional colors, such as black, red, white, or blue?
D - Diameter: Any mole larger than 6mm, ie the head of a pencil eraser, has a higher risk of becoming melanoma.
E - Evolution: Has it changed?
F - The Ugly Duckling Sign: Most people have a “signature mole,” their own personal mole appearance and architecture. Is there a mole that seems different from all the others?
4. Everyone needs a full body skin exam by a board-certified dermatologist once a year, more frequently if you have a family history of skin cancer, a personal history of skin cancer, or live in an area with substantial sunshine.

Loaded Inheritance: Safe Gun Storage, Ownership and Disposal with California Gun Services

My grandparents owned a beautiful three bedroom casita in Solana Beach. Just up the road from the train station, their home was built in the twenties, and renovated completely when I was in high school. When my grandfather passed away, I moved in with my grandma, doing chores around the house for her and helping to maintain the garden. One day, I was looking for my grandfather’s whetstone, to sharpen an old pair of shears, and I stumbled across his Colt Python 357 Magnum. I had to look it up - I thought it might be a relic from one of the movies he worked on in the 50’s, but according to my grandma, it was just “one of those things your grandpa just insisted on having.”
Jeff McCabe has gotten more of his fair share of calls from people like myself, who accidentally come across family firearms in their home and don’t have the first idea of what to do with them. The owner of California Gun Services, Jeff is in the business of safe gun storage, ownership and disposal. The first step? Following California gun laws. I had zero clue that by driving the Colt to the Army Navy to try and turn it in I’d be breaking a couple laws. According to Jeff there are laws restricting gifting or selling a gun, receiving a gun, borrowing a gun, transporting a gun, even storing guns. New laws come out every year, and it is almost impossible for anyone, even aficionados to keep up with them. bility to not only protect ourselves legally by complying with Federal and State laws, but to protect ourselves, our neighbors and most importantly, our children from all possible dangers associated with firearms.”
San Clemente resident Rhonda Murphy couldn’t agree more. “There are many things to deal with when a loved one dies. In 2010, when cleaning out my husband’s closet, I came across several of his guns. I didn’t want to keep them and was unsure of what to do with them. My daughters didn’t want the guns and I didn’t want to deal with the hassle of storing them as my grandkids are often at my house. A friend suggested I should call Jeff. He was very nice, easy to talk with, trustworthy and knowledgable. He came to my house, checked all the guns to make sure they were unloaded and removed them. Jeff also told me that one of the guns was a collector’s item and was able to sell it for me. One less thing to have to worry about. I can’t recommend Jeff enough.”

If you have inherited or legally obtain a firearm, he can provide you with a Voluntary Registration form or you can download it from the California Department of Justice which is NOT required to do at a gun shop. California Gun Services has a Federal Firearm License and can legally come to you and take possession of a firearm without a Gun Transfer.

It’s A Milestone For Sure…

“I never thought I’d be turning 65…..” If I had a dollar for every time that sentence has been uttered in my office I’d be looking at a really tall stack of one dollar bills.
Nowadays you apply for Medicare on the Social Security website (or there’s a number to call into to make a phone appointment). This is only if you’re not taking Social Security early, you’ll get your Medicare card automatically if you are already taking Social Security. Once you apply for Medicare you will receive a letter in a few weeks from Social Security saying they’ve received your application and it was approved. Then a second letter arrives and it gives you your Medicare number and that letter then tells you that you’ll be receiving your Medicare card in several weeks. This is a big milestone financially for most because of the cost of their health insurance if they are paying for it privately (group insurance can be expensive too however). Most can hardly wait to start saving money (At age 64 rates are typically over $1000 a month for coverage that has a lot of co-pays and a deductible in the few thousands). Once you get your
“Original Medicare” card (paper, red, white and blue with a random alpha-numeric combination and a Part A and Part B effective date on it) you have choices to make. The majority of people who I meet with want me to enroll them in a Medicare Advantage plan after learning about all of the great benefits and learning that it has no premium at all. That’s right, zero premium. All you have to do is pay your Part B premium to the government. Better yet, almost all of your medical care has zero co-pays. Even if you’re hospitalized you won’t pay anything. You have financial peace of mind knowing you’ll never need to be worried about high medical bills again. It’s the only positive side of turning 65 I’m told.
I’m also told by my clients that are new to Medicare that they feel so fortunate to have me “hold their hand” and help them through the process. I will “hold your hand” too if you want my assistance as you face this big milestone. Much of my consultation time is going through the appropriate steps of someone just getting their Medicare active. This really has nothing to do with my job because I’m an insurance broker, not a government employee. But this seems to be the most daunting step for most that I meet with.
The government is trying to make it an easier process. If you have a computer you can enroll in Medicare online by going to Medicare. gov. They are continually trying to make that website more user friendly. Once you’re on the website just click on “Apply for Medicare” on the lower left hand side of the webpage. And it takes you right to the Social Security website page and in a bright blue box at the bottom of the page it reads, “Apply for Medicare Only”. Then just follow the steps and you’ll be done in no time!
You’ll want to start this process 3 months before your birthday month to make sure you’re good to go on the first day of the month that you turn 65 (unless you’re born on the 1st, then you get to go on Medicare one month early). Medicare alone is not enough, and that’s where I come in to help you understand your Medicare options. Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplements and Medicare Drug plans are complex and the fact that you can have my knowledge (at no cost to you) to help you decide the right choice for you at this milestone in your life should give you peace of mind as well.

You might be surprised to learn what the country’s fastest growing industry is and it’s not RV sales, in spite of a year of lockdown. But the demand to get on the road is certainly fueling the drive toward recreational activities in North America, and e-bikes are running away with the market.
Fueled by demand from both Canada and the U.S., e-bikes are looking at an annual growth rate of close to 11% over the next few years, marching right along with a booming housing market and burgeoning infrastructure development. Targeting not only recent retirees, but enthusiasts of all ages looking to stay
active, get outside or simply prefer to tool around town on an E-bike - the evolved and infinitely more exciting electric iteration of the traditional two-wheeler.
While E-bike purveyors are seemingly on every corner, few have experienced the explosion in interest and growth locally like Doheny Bike - the fastest growing E-bike company in Dana Point.
This is perhaps due in large measure to the popularity, versatility,
utility and affordability of the company’s Fold N’ Go collection - available in a array of colors and profiles. But undoubtedly in equal measure is the mission of its co-owners - Jason Spates and Micah Meiring - to “give back to the community.”

Doheny Bike is donating a Doheny EZ Folding bike to Pet Project’s biggest fundraiser of the year on September 19th called Pet Project Foundation: Roaring for Rescues! Proceeds will benefit the animals at the San Clemente-Dana Point Animal Shelter.
“We recognized the opportunity to give back, to contribute to our community that shaped our childhood, and it felt natural to encourage mobility and personal freedom when the pandemic had taken so much of it away.” Jason and Micah are a couple of local Dana Point dads, lucky enough to have lived near the worldfamous Doheny Beach surf spot their entire lives. “Our freedom was nearly unlimited as kids in the 1970’s and 80’s - we wanted our own kids to be as mobile as we were.”

“With the average buyer’s budget in mind, we wanted a functional riding experience that is not trendy, awkward and limited to your hometown,” says Micah. “Creating the agility of the Fold N’ Go anywhere design, we have provided a solution to buyers that want to travel in a smaller car with electric bikes and ultimately extend their outdoor adventures.”
As parents, Jason and Micah stress the importance of safety, and encourage all riders to be over 16, along with the importance of sizing the bike
out, wearing a helmet, and meeting minimum requirements to ride the bikes safely on the road.

Put a basket on the back and you’re ready for the store or farmer’s market. “I wanted something better than traffic in my car and I just knew that the options I had to help my community needed to be affordable and reliable.”
With a background in commercial truck leasing and loans, and an early pandemic ride on his nephew’s electric scooter, genius was born. “There’s something about being out in the fresh air that made a great start to the day.” The recent cycling boom couldn’t agree more.

It’s A Milestone For Sure…
“I
never thought I’d be turning 65…..” If I had a dollar for every time that sentence has been uttered in my office I’d be looking at a really tall stack of one dollar bills.
I’m told by my clients that are new to Medicare that they feel so fortunate to have me “hold their hand” and help them through the process. I will “hold your hand” too if you want my assistance as you face this big milestone. Much of my consultation time is going through the appropriate steps of someone just getting their Medicare active.
The government is trying to make it an easier process. If you have a computer you can enroll in Medicare online by going to Medicare. gov. They are continually trying to make that website more user friendly. Once you’re on the website just click on “Apply for Medicare” on the lower left hand side of the webpage. And it takes you right to the Social Security website page and in a bright blue box at the bottom it reads, “Apply for Medicare Only”. Then just follow the steps and you’ll be done in no time!
You’ll want to start this process 3 months before your birthday month to make sure you’re good to go on the first day of the month that you turn 65 (unless you’re born on the 1st, then you get to go on Medicare one month early). Medicare alone is not enough, and that’s where I come in to help you understand your Medicare options. Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplements and Medicare Drug plans are complex and the fact that you can have my knowledge (at no cost to you) to help you make the right choice for you at this milestone in your life should give you peace of mind as well.

A year later, when the concrete moves again and damages their brand new floor coating, the devastated homeowner will learn that this damage is not covered by the typical Epoxy warranty. “We are the only company that I know of that uses a ‘structural crack repair’ technique to fix cracks. The process is so effective we can offer our customers a warranty that can cover future damage from cracks!” says Paul.
After the surface prep is completed, a very effective moisture control primer is applied to the concrete. “This is extremely important” says Paul because for many homes built in Socal before 2005, elevated moisture vapor levels in the garage concrete can have a detrimental impact on floor coatings. Paul does a fast and non-destructive moisture test for every one of the pre-2005 homes he visits and develops a unique installation plan for each home. For newer homes, Paul and his crew can use a basic primer that dries a bit faster allowing installation of a garage floor in as little as one day!
The color chips that give the Perkins floor its legendary appearance are sandwiched between this primer and finish coat. Perkins carries the widest selection of colors and sizes in the market and uses a ‘full chip broadcast’, not a partial sprinkling of chips like many of its competitors. “The full chip broadcast gives the floor a consistent appearance and makes the floor much more durable and helps hide dirt better than the partial broadcast finish” says Paul.
