ADVERTISER TESTIMONIALS “We have been advertising in South County Magazine since its very first edition in January 2011. Our involvement has been a true partnership over these many years in that the publication team continually strives to create added-value opportunities - at no additional cost - for our business to generate ROI - from the editorials to the monthly mixers. I would highly recommend South County Magazine for any local business looking for exposure in South Orange County.” - Ron Pashaian, Monaco Jewelers, San Juan Capistrano “Working with Jody Robinson is a pure delight! She is a pro, plus she is patient, kind and efficient. I have been an advertiser in South County Magazine for several years now. This is our main source of advertising. The results have been positive and consistent. Every month we have new customers visiting our store saying they have seen our ads in South County! Jody is a pleasure to work with and always has our best interests at heart.” - Susie Smith, Backstreet Home Decor, San Clemente “As local business owners and professionals, we are so lucky to have South County Magazine to reach our target customer through advertising and share our business ‘stories” and philoso-phies through the editorial opportunities. Working with South County Magazine couldn’t be easier. I was helped every step of the way - from the photography, writing and design - AND ALL AT NO EXTRA COST. Since participating, my business has tripled - a significant return on my advertising investment. Advertising with South County Magazine is simple, straight-forward and most importantly ... it works!” - Victoria Vannini, Howard Jones Salon, Dana Point “I know that my business wouldn’t be as successful as it is today if I hadn’t started advertising in South County Magazine when it first started five years ago. I have established relationships with hundreds of clients over the years, and then those clients also refer friends and family to me as well. It was one of the best business decisions that I ever made.” - Stephanie Frisch, Insurance 101 “One of the best marketing decisions I ever made was to advertise in Jody’s magazines. It generated clients directly and raised public awareness of the company in our market area. I highly recommend any of Jody’s publications that reach your target audience. Above and beyond that is the fact that Jody is truly interested in helping people prosper. She is always on the lookout for additional opportunities to serve her advertisers and readers. One can never have too many thoughtful, intelligent people helping you promote your business.” - David Allen, HelpURemodel “We love the South County Magazine and its associated publications. It has been a wonderful community to be part of and a phenomenal way for us to reach the community about important issues. We’re grateful for all the support Jody and her team have provided us over the years!” - Omeed Askari, OC Pharmacy

Peter has been helping Southern Californians with their income tax returns, tax planning, and comprehensive financial planning needs for over 30 years. Peter is adamant when he says, “As long as the IRS keeps up with its annual “tax simplification” strategies, you will want to use a professional who understands the constantly changing tax and financial environment.” Peter stresses that “the start of the year is the perfect time for tax planning. It enables us to achieve a good sense of direction and work together with my undivided attention. This is true for any individual, small business, or corporation seeking to become more tax efficient and a better financial consumer.”

A CPA who helps you plan a SECURE FUTURE

C

ertified Public Accountant Peter D. Prescott is single-minded: “I strive to make each client as tax efficient as possible. Using a client’s entire finances as a framework, we establish major goals and then combine tax savings techniques and professional financial planning to enhance the growth of their money!”

Peter’s background is impressive: A business degree from U.C. Berkeley, a Professional Financial Planning designation from U.C.L.A., a Masters in Taxation from Golden Gate University, Big 8 accounting experience at Price Waterhouse and the Personal Financial Specialist Designation (PFS) from the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Overwhelming technical expertise belie the fact that Peter is a people person. His clients appreciate his professional knowledge of course, but they love him for his down to earth sensibility, wit and humor. As a man who has participated in public speaking venues, stand-up comedy and a few game shows, Peter loves life and is not only dedicated to his profession, but also maintaining a balance of work and play. His most important priority is his own family. His wife Margie is a homemaker and formerly a special education teacher in San Clemente. Having three sons, Peter understands that early planning to meet family goals is critical.

Knowledge of the tax laws is of little value unless they can be applied wisely to fully meet your needs. That is why Peter follows a comprehensive approach combining effective tax savings, advanced financial planning strategies, estate planning and professional investment methodologies. Why allow yourself to become anxious and stressed out about your taxes, retirement, college, or business planning? The best time to begin the process is now. There are still many actions that can be taken to save you money this year and be better positioned for the future. With Peter’s help you will benefit not only from his experience, but you’ll be able to relax a little more too! ReelTime Sight & Sound Solutions for a SMART Home … and Breaking Free from the Big Box for Your Perfect Home Theater System By Ann Laurence

hen I was younger, my Mom loved to read me the book “If You Give A Mouse A Cookie.” The plot essentially revolves around an ever-growing list of to-do’s that had to be accomplished, all set into motion by the simple act of giving a mouse a cookie. This tale came back to me recently when I purchased a new television at Best Buy. What was a simple shopping trip ended up being an adult’s version of that circular tale. If you give a grownup a television, they’ll have to measure their wall. When they measure the wall, they’ll realize they may actually have room for a bigger television. When they buy the bigger television, they’ll find out they have no idea how to mount it to the wall. When they start mounting it to the wall, they’ll see that the power outlets are all in the wrong places. When they realize the outlets need to be moved, they’ll call an electrician. (This could go on forever.) Luckily for me, and for so many others who have been on the receiving end of ReelTime Sight and Sound’s patient, intelligent, and personalized service, the rabbit hole of home automation didn’t swallow me entirely. With the help of their independent certified Control4 dealer, it was easy to update my home without upending my entire life. FEBRUARY 2017

After all, the true luxury of an integrated entertainment system is really dependent on its ability to deliver seamless entertainment. By placing every control at your fingertips, the team at ReelTime helps homeowners manage everything from how brightly lit your family room is, to your streaming devices - all with a single remote. And best yet? You can control your whole home from the comfort of your couch- even seeing who is at the front door, without ever leaving your seat. Simple, clean, and uncluttered. And on the home entertainment front … when you started planning for your ultimate home theater set-up and sound system, could you find the right media cabinetry for your particular space – cabinetry that wouldn’t catch on fire from the heat of the equipment, or that would simply look good in the room? Did you understand half of what the televisions, receivers and other devices could do, and did you have anyone to hold your hand to make sure you weren’t overspending for what you wanted?

SOUTH COUNTY MAGAZINE

closely with you to determine what you’re looking for. Then they custom design every aspect of the project, from wiring to custom-built cabinets, frames, or built-in wall designs. Finally, licensed, in-house contractors install your entertainment system with care and precision. Yeah, neither did I. Big box retailers, the professed champions of value, are happy to sell you any home theater and sound equipment you think you might like, and send you off to figure it out at home. That’s what they do. And that’s all they do. If you want the home theater system that you envision, seek the services of Skip Myers and his team of experienced professionals at ReelTime Sight & Sound to take you from start to finish for the home theater or sound system of your dreams. “Usually there is a part of the job that you find you just can’t do by yourself,” says Skip, who has overseen the design and installation of thousands of home theater and sound systems over the course of 40-plus years in the business. “You get your brand new television home, you’re so excited, then you realize you need to move an outlet or none of the cabinets you can find will fit your space. We’re here to make sure you get the equipment that will give you what you want and the system that will work with that equipment, without leaving you to fend for yourself.” Skip opened the doors at ReelTime Sight & Sound in 1983. Today, the technicians and designers that Skip assigns to clients are all ReelTime Sight & Sound employees, knowledgeable in all home theater and sound technologies. First, they work

There are a couple of things that people may not think about when they embark upon the road to their own home entertainment system. “You need to think about your home theater goals,” says Skip. “You don’t have to do everything at once – you can do it bit by bit – but if you know where you’re going, you’ll save money and when it’s all said and done, you’ll have exactly what you want and

what you will actually use. We’re here to help you determine your goals.” Skip is also an advocate for getting what you’ll use, which is part of the design and planning process. “You can buy everything you want to, but if you can’t operate it, what’s the point?” he says. “There’s the television, DVD and Blue-ray; there’s the receiver, there’s Apple TV… it’s all great, but how do you get them to work together? We’re big advocates of the universal remote. Not everyone knows how to get the most out of their systems with one powerful remote – they’re not expensive, but the best ones are computer-based. We’ll set that up for you so you’re getting the most out of your custom system.” It’s easy to assume that personal service is expensive, but a conversation with Skip and the experts at ReelTime Sight & Sound is free. Ultimately, in planning your purchases for the right outcome, you’re likely to save money while avoiding chilling setbacks. The only chilling you want to be doing is in front of your fantasy home theater system. McCormack Roofing, Construction & Energy Solutions

Offering Mission-Driven Solutions By Jody Robinson

Growing up, I’m sure we all heard our parents or teachers quip “at least you have a roof over your head,” when we complained about one thing or another. Bad cafeteria food, rain at recess, slow wi-fi.

F

or Jim McCormack, that adage hit home a bit differently. Roofing defined the summers of his junior high and high school years, working alongside his father in the San Gabriel Valley. Branching into doors, windows, solar, painting and insulation wasn’t a far reach, especially after earning his contractor’s license in 1992. That roof over your head: Jim may have installed it.

us money in the long term.” When searching for someone to update or upgrade your home, looking for low pricing and efficient labor are really just the tip of the iceberg reputation, credentials, name recognition: between Jim and his father, McCormack Roofing has been around for the last 100 years in combined roofing and construction management.

Working with residential clients, commercial property managers and building owners puts McCormack Roofing in the unique position of offering their clients a range of complementary services, helping to minimize the frustration homeowners and managers feel when looking for a reliable contractor. “Our mission is to be the most respected service-oriented home improvement company in Orange County - not the biggest - the most respected’, Jim notes. “If we work hard to constantly improve and follow the ‘Golden Rule’ we really can’t go wrong.”

“Above all else, your residential roof sets the tone for the overall style and appearance of your home. If you’re not yet in the market for a new roof entirely, we can help serve your immediate needs as well with our repair and maintenance division.” Metal, stone, composition, concrete and more. McCormack will even power wash an existing roof that has grown dingy with age, mold, or mildew - leaving it clean and sealed with the custom color of your choice. By getting several roofing-related services at the same time, clients save money and add instant value and comfort to their homes.

A resident of Laguna Niguel for the past 25 years, Jim is familiar with the residential landscape, and the ever present and changing demands of the housing market. New paint, new doors and windows - “we all walk that line between what is affordable now, and what will save FEBRUARY 2017

the information you might need for tax rebates or credits to offset your investment. An early proponent of energy-saving systems, Jim warranties the solar installation right alongside his roofing, allowing customers the peace of mind that comes with avoiding the “pitfalls of unsuitable installation”. “It is a major benefit to have a contractor who is well versed in both applications, and can design and harmonize the whole system to provide optimum benefits for you”. Offering a complete line of windows and doors to suit any style or taste rounds out McCormack’s offerings, ensuring that your view is improved whether you’re coming or going. Helping to substantially lower your utility bill, new windows provide exceptional value any way you look at them. For Jim, gazing into his life through the framework of his business has offered him a glimpse of a value-driven mission: one that grows alongside his family, hobbies, and passions. “My wife and I love being outdoors; fishing, hiking, snowboarding with our kids - working in the community has to mirror our commitment to each other, and I treat every one of my customers like family. It is important to me that each of our customers knows they have been treated fairly and received the quality job they contracted for in good faith. It is a passion of mine to recruit a committed and dedicated team of associates who share the same principles and values that I adhere to.” It’s the way his father went about business - and for Jim, it’s the only way to go.

Claims with Confidence Roby & Associates – Keeping Insurance Companies Honest Since 1987 By Jody Robinson

It is rare to find someone who can say that they appreciate adverse events in their life. More rare perhaps to find someone who will admit that such a calamity led them to a job that they love with a company that treats them with mutual respect and admiration.

N

ancy Stewart, a long time South County resident and mother of two filed a claim for a water leak with her insurance company and was repeatedly denied. While the problem stagnated, Nancy looked for help. How to go about maneuvering the claims process? How to protect her property and equity?

So he offered to help Nancy obtain her Public Insurance Adjusters License. She is now proud to represent Roby & Associates as their Consumer Advocate.

Fortunately she found the professionals at Roby & Associates Public Insurance Adjusters who worked on her behalf to negotiate the claim. Roby & Associates specializes in helping clients negotiate their claim or claims for damage under any insurance policy covering real or personal property due to fire, water, wind, vandalism, theft – any first party claims. “Wayne Roby and his contractor, Jack Paulus, assured me that I had a legitimate claim for damages. They immediately went to work, and we carefully and diligently managed my claim to the very end.” Typically, homeowners hire out contractors to take care of things they can’t themselves: kitchen remodels, home automation. The work is planned and executed - such was with Roby & Associates. “Wayne built my claim to maximize the monetary features and benefits of my policy coverage based on my actual damage,” she says. “He taught me what customers need, and how to most effectively manage an insurance claim.” By the time he was able to help her resolve her claim, Wayne had recognized a kindred spirit in Nancy – someone who believed in the process and possessed a desire to help others who found themselves in a similar situation. FEBRUARY 2017

16

Seeing both sides of the business helps, and Wayne has worked for insurance companies as well as in adjustment for the last thirty years. “We help consumers maximize all of their policy coverage’s,” he says. Beyond that though, Nancy states: “You’re surrounded by a team of quality people who truly care, who are willing to deliver an unparalleled level of service to the consumer.” Without a keen construction eye, most consumers are left in the dark when it comes to household claims – a situation that can easily can end up escalating into a repair cost nightmare. Having an advocate to fight for you can be the most direct route to protect, secure, and repair the damages done, without incurring more in the process. Wayne, Jack, and Nancy are all active in various organizations and charities around South Orange County - from the Dana Point Chamber of Commerce to raising support for cystic fibrosis. But for Wayne, and all those who work with him, “working with our clients to get them back to a pre-loss condition is the reward in itself.”

For a complimentary consultation to determine how a Public Insurance Adjuster can help you navigate your insurance claim, call Nancy at (949) 842-5821 or Wayne (310) 251-8091.

all me old fashioned, but I believe that physical photos are a medium worth preserving. When I recently sat down to put together my daughter’s baby book, I thought of how printed images might at times seem like a thing of

the past. But then I can’t imagine showing off my family photos by scrolling through all the images I posted to Facebook once upon a time.

Q: Who is the right candidate for truSculpt®?

BUSINESSES

TIPS FOR FILING YOUR 2016 INDIVIDUAL & BUSINESS TAX RETURNS

B

ased upon the recent increase in IRS audits, I can’t think of a more important time to have your tax returns prepared professionally by a CPA. It is critical that you remove the guess work when you prepare your tax returns. I am ready to help you review your unique situation to determine if any of the following tax planning ideas should be implemented. 1. Taxpayers age 70.5 or older can contribute to charities up to $100,000 directly out of their IRA. This reduces AGI and most likely will lower your tax bill. 2. Education credit (American Opportunity Credit) is only available for four years. Consideration should be given to not using the credit the first semester after high school if the student has minimal costs attending a Junior College. It is more likely that higher costs will exist in the later years when the student attends a more expensive four year campus. If the student has enough income to not be a dependent, have the student claim the credit since the parent’s income can be too high to receive the credit. This is another reason to hire children in your business. If the child can be claimed as a dependent, I would still claim the non-refundable portion (up to $1,500) on their tax return (recommend paper filing on this return). 3. New rules and case law limit pension rollovers to one every 12 months under the “60 day rule”. Care must be taken to avoid a taxable distribution. However, some taxable distributions can now be avoided under a number of hardship exemptions. 4. Self-employed health insurance deductions must be adjusted for any additional premium tax credit or repayment of the credit. 5. Carefully review your Form K-1s to determine if you are actively or passively involved in the business. If the K-1 activity is coded as active, you can avoid the 3.8% Medicare surcharge for passive income. A special one-time regrouping election is also available for multiple activities. 6. All taxpayers must report Foreign Assets that fall within IRS guidelines or be subject to large penalties and scrutiny. Forms Fin Cen 114 (due April 15) and Form 8938 must be filed timely.

1. Tax return deadlines have changed for Partnerships (3/15) and C Corporations (4/15). 2. 50% Bonus Depreciation is back (20152017) for business assets. 3. S Corporations must pay the health insurance premiums directly or reimburse 2% or greater shareholders to claim the deduction. Payment must be reported on shareholder’s Form W-2. 4. S Corporations have less audit risk (0.4%) than Schedule C (2-3%) filers. 5. Do some planning to see if a 401k, SEPIRA or Defined Benefit Plan is the most beneficial plan for saving on a pre or after tax basis. Contributions are due late 2017 on the extension due date. 6. Corporations can take advantage of late S Corp Election filing procedures to receive preferential tax treatment, if applicable. 7. The “Business Use of Home” deduction now has a safe harbor option of $5 of expense for every dedicated square foot of business use. Learn the details to see if this is a better option for you.

Self Love By the Align Pilates team

“You yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe, deserves your love and affection” – Sharon Salzberg

A

great way to connect inwards to the e m o tional a n d spiritual self, the highest self, is to start first with the physical self — the body. As your vessel, your physical body carries the rest of you around each day. Your thoughts, your feelings, your desires, your experiences, your pain, and your joy, are all housed in your tissues and cells. It makes sense then that caring for your body would be of utmost priority. Yet often it is not. Our bodies, by the most incredible design, can operate at high levels with minimal care for long periods of time. We are able to sustain energy, produce results, and meet the needs of those around us while offering ourselves

very little. Eventually though, without attention and restoration we become depleted. Things start to break and become painful, disease sets in, we feel run down and weak, and our ability to care for others diminish. The solution is self love through the form of self care; to fill up so we can offer more of ourselves to ourselves, and to the world. Caring for the physical body allows for the cultivation of strength, endurance, energy within, and offers us access to forgiveness, gratitude, confidence and love for others. A practice like Pilates or yoga, which connects body, mind, and spirit, is not only a beautiful way to experience growth it is a powerful way! M o v e ment to breath, d o n e s k i l l fully with purposeful placement of the muscles and skeletal system, creates a unique experience in the body, and offers benefits unlike those found in other forms of movement. And on a more practical level, it’s one of the most efficient ways to care for your self. In just an hour, the entire body is nourished, strengthened, and expressed. Start loving your self with your foundation — the body. Caring for your body is essential, and loving yourself first, is most essential to a healthy and happy life. So, this Valentine’s Day take care of you, give yourself a little love, and join us at Align Pilates and Yoga Center.

If you want to get in shape, better your life, or just need help with finding the best Pilates experience, connect with Nicole or Cara by calling (949) 481-3577, stop by the studio at 26850 Ortega Hwy., Suite K in San Juan Capistrano or visit www.alignpilatescenter.com FEBRUARY 2017

PART B PREMIUM INCREASE

Serving South County since 1973

High Quality • Best Prices in OC

By Stephanie Frisch

There seems to be some confusion regarding the Medicare Part B premium. (This amount is taken out of someone’s Social Security check monthly, or if someone isn’t taking Social Security, it is billed quarterly). There have been more changes in the last 12 months to the Part B premium that I have seen historically in the last 7 years.

S

tarting January 1, most people with Medicare will see a small increase in their Part B premium, from $104.90 to an average of $109.00 per month. But about 30 percent of people covered by Medicare will see a minimum Part B premium of $134.00, a 10 percent increase from the minimum 2016 premium of $121.80. This difference in premium amounts is due to a federal law which is commonly called the “hold harmless” provision. This provision prevents about 70 percent of beneficiaries from seeing major increases in Medicare Part B premiums when Social Security cost of living adjustments (COLAs) are nonexistent or very small. The announced COLA for 2017 is very small, 0.3 percent, triggering the hold harmless provision.

Those who are held harmless will not see their Part B premium increase by an amount that is greater than the dollar amount of their COLA increase. Because the COLA is a percentage of a person’s Social Security benefits, the exact dollar amount of the increase, and the premium, will vary. For example, someone who has a premium of 104.90 deducted from their full Social Security benefits of $1,000 in 2016 will see a COLA of $3 and will have $107.90 deducted from their check for the Part B premium in 2017. Someone who gets 2,000 in Social Security benefits, will see a COLA of $6 and will have a Part B premium of $110.90. Not everyone is protected by the hold harmless provision. Because the protection is tied to Social Security benefits, people with Medicare who do not receive Social Security or do not have premiums deducted from their Social Security checks are not covered. Those people who are new to the Medicare program in 2017, those who pay income-adjusted premiums, and those whose premiums are paid by their states are also not covered. Stephanie Frisch is the owner of Insurance 101 and is an independent insurance broker dedicated to helping others make “educated decisions” about their insurance choices when it comes to Medicare, The Health Insurance Marketplace-Covered California and Life Insurance. The Grand Del Mar

One of the country’s best resorts, a stone’s throw from home

By Jody Robinson

W

e knew we were in for a memorable weekend when the driveway to the Fairmont Grand Del Mar (fairmont.com/san-diego) took its sweet time delivering us to the resort. A canopy of autumn colors rustled in a lazy and surprisingly warm San Diego breeze as we made our way into the canyon just a couple of miles inland from the 5, which might as well have been 500 miles from kids, laundry, work, obligations. The autumn colors eventually broke to reveal an expertly meandering golf course, which

in turn gave way to the fountained entrance to our longtime-in-coming getaway with girlfriends. Situated adjacent to the Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve in San Diego, FEBRUARY 2017

It is remarkable to think that, with all the affluence and attraction of Southern California, with swank people desirous of swank accommodations, it is the Grand Del Mar, nestled rurally in North County San Diego and quite out of the way of Rodeo Drive, that consistently earns the highest ratings from all the swankest reviewers and

The Grand Del Mar is not an historic hotel – it opened in 2007 – but for those who love the richness of historic luxury, it satisfies abundantly. Many varieties of wood, marble and tapestry abound in artisan expression that is opulent without gaudiness, a balance struck by the best historic hotels. Of course, if you are one of those history types, you’ll know that historic properties are typically high on charm and low on space. Not so here. The rooms are commodiously cozy (or cozily commodious, per your preference), where you can sprawl out and never feel cold. Our suite was on an upper level with a balcony overlooking the canyon and portions of the golf course, with palm fronds swaying in the breeze just feet from us as we sipped our morning coffee. Diego, which is today a beautiful hiking, biking and horseback riding destination. Guests of the Grand Del Mar have access to all the canyon has to offer, with bikes available for pickup at the front desk, and horses at the on-site stables ready for trail riding. For those whose outdoor adventures entail a driver and a putter, the Grand Del Mar features the only Tom Fazio-designed golf course in San Diego, complimented by swing analysis technology services, a SAMPutt lab, specialized practice areas used by some of the world’s top professionals, and more. If you’re of the aquatic persuasion, the property features two pools, one ideal for families and one infinity (read tranquility) pool for adults only. Not far beyond pools are the resort’s private beach and oceanic excursions including sunset sails and whale watching. And this only scratches the surface. For spa enthusiasts, the Grand Del Mar offers one of the most acclaimed in the country. Naturally it features a comprehensive menu of treatments, such as cleansing facials and therapeutic massages, as well as a custom line of organic products; but it also offers a world-class spa experience,

its restaurants to its in-room dining, from its robust wine program to its seasonal menus and Afternoon Tea, the Grand Del Mar has something for every epicurean. with wet and dry saunas, indoor whirlpools, separate men’s and women’s relaxation lounges with fireplaces, access to the adults-only relaxation pool and all the hot tea, snacks and chocolates you could ask for.

With all that the Grand Del Mar has to offer in activities, amenities, services and dining, the delight of being there is ultimately of the atmosphere, and that comes down to two things: beauty and people.

The dining experience at the Grand Del Mar stands on its own and is itself the reason that many travel long distances to visit the resort. Six on-property dining venues offer something for every taste, mood and interest, often to the sound of live music. Addison, led by celebrated executive chef William Bradley, is the Grand Del Mar’s signature dining feature. Local ingredients are combined with contemporary French influences and presented with exceptional service to make Addison Southern California’s most awarded fine dining restaurant.

The staff members at the Grand Del Mar have a special quality. While hospitality professionals are typically welcoming, of course, the folks at the Grand Del Mar are authentically welcoming. So much so that either the resort has found hundreds of matchless thespians to do everything from valet the car to turn down the sheets, or the Grand Del Mar’s people truly enjoy being there. I want to believe that it is the latter.

Amaya is a more casual option fusing Spanish, Italian and French fare with expansive, sunny views of the canyon and golf course. We enjoyed a sumptuous breakfast of various benedicts and the “Black & Blue” Brioche French Toast with granola, lemon crème fraîche and berries, and an immunity smoothie for good measure (the effects were immediate). But excellence does not stop at Addison or Amaya. From FEBRUARY 2017

As to beauty, the Grand Del Mar is simply an exquisitely designed place with lovely spaces; from the driveway to the marbled entrance to the furnishings and the vistas, you cannot escape a floor-to-ceiling sense of beauty of the most approachable kind. And so at every turn you are inspired to tranquility and delight. In the end, that is how we spent our 24-hour break from our everydays – enjoying each other, and simply basking in what the Grand Del Mar is. Long, slowly winding driveways always lead to something good.

Superb steaks, inventive dishes and exemplary service

@ Selanne Steak Tavern Photos Courtesy Selanne Steak Tavern

By Jody Robinson

H

ere in South Orange County, we’re pretty blessed to live so close to the coast and have an abundance of wonderful dining destinations to choose from. But for inventive cuisine and exemplary service in the spirit of much-loved classic American steakhouses and taverns, there are precious few establishments that rival Selanne Steak Tavern. Situated along Pacific Coast Highway in Laguna Beach, the restaurant is housed in a historic 1934 two-story country cottage complete with a faux water well and bucket pouring water, red brick walkways and wooden shingled roof tiles. Step through the hand-carved wooden door into the main entry and you’ll find that the interior ambiance and décor is decidedly classic modern - from the stunning glass chandelier suspended from the ceiling in the elegant foyer to the sleek Carrara marble fireplace, wide-planked oak floors, clean lines, upholstered furnishings and accented by local abstract art created by Laguna Beach artist Nick Gaetano throughout the classy bar and five dining areas (The Loft - upstairs dining room; The Wine Library; downstairs in The Tavern; or outside on The Veranda or Sunset Terrace). Owned and operated Teemu Selanne, hockey legend and former NHL star player for the Anaheim Ducks, and local businessman Kevin Pratt. The longtime friends and neighbors, the pair share a commitment to making their restaurant a place for “friends and families to enjoy great food and libations in a comfortable, appealing eatery.” I would have to say the restaurant’s proprietors have certainly hit the mark – and raised the bar for destination dining in the region. On a recent

date night, my husband, Tim, and I reserved a table in the upstairs dining room to indulge in a glass or two of fine wine (focused on California cult wines and other highly-rated, world class wines) and beautifully presented, delicious dishes including what are arguably among the best steaks in Orange County. Executive Chef Joshua Severson has created a menu defined by his distinctive version of contemporary American steakhouse fare with a wonderful variety of top meats from Filet Mignon to Australian Wagyu. There are actually eight options on the menu, including the Chef’s Signature 38 oz Lord Stanley Cut, which serves two.

Our server Mike recommended that we start with the chef’s signature Pacific Diver Scallops, which he claimed were the best he’d ever eaten “with no other coming in a close second.” Now I fancy myself somewhat of a seafood and sushi connoisseur and as such, was expecting it might fall short. But I have to say, Chef nailed it with a perfectly prepared dish enFEBRUARY 2017

hanced by a delicious cauliflower/ pickled chanterelle. A meat-and-potatoes man, my husband chose the filet mignon and while I typically steer toward seafood selections, opted instead for a 12 oz prime Rib Eye – again at Mike’s suggestion. The marbling was superb, soft, and tender. Served with Chef’s seasonal marrow butter and bordelaise sauce, the beef literally melted in our mouths. A favorite side dish is Selanne’s signature Mac and Cheese – a decade five-cheese fondue topped with brioche crumbs.

The menu also features several other seafood dishes which include a 2 lb. Atlantic Maine Lobster and smoked Skuna Bay Salmon. For vegetarians, Selanne’s serves up a Forest Mushroom Risotto flavored with black truffle oil. There is something delicious for everyone’s taste. Selanne Steak Tavern is located at 1464 S. Coast Hwy. in Laguna Beach. For reservations or more information, call (949) 715-9881 or visit selannesteaktavern.com

group of six determined, enthusiastic, and dedicated 5th grade students from John S. Malcom Elementary are moving mountains in the world of youth robotics. The Coding Queens—Adalee Geiss, Gabriella Backus, Lily Placey, Maryan Malkosh, Riley Divel, and Sophia Mantucca—are proud to be the very first all-girl robotics team to emerge from Laguna Niguel, and they are ready to show some girl power. Award-winning robotics team leader Nona Reimer assembled this team of powerful girls to “equip these scholars with the STEM tools they will use to unlock the future.” Another MVP on this team is coach Yazan Malkosh,

a volunteer father with a Double Bachelors of Science in Microbiology and Architectural Design Engineering. Since its formation in November 2016, the all-star team has shown astounding growth. While their coach and teacher are on hand to give the team thoughtprovoking material and plenty of encouragement, both leaders ensure that the Coding Queen’s victories are made that much sweeter by ensuring that every decision, robot design, coding pattern, etc., is made solely by the team members. Most recently, the Coding Queens were among the youngest of 23 teams to compete in December at the 2016 VEX IQ San Diego Regional event, hosted by UCSD. Their claw-bot, fondly referred as “Zippy,” took first place in the Teamwork Skills Challenge. This win was accompanied by an invitation to the State VEX IQ Championship to be held this March in Pomona.

the educational opportunities available to them as well as the thrill of being a part of the rapidly evolving world of technology. Participating on this team demonstrates to these girls—some of whom perhaps hadn’t thought about a future in STEM—just how much they can achieve in this largely male-driven industry. egerstrom Center for the Arts welcomes the return of popular musical ensemble Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox on February 17, 2017 in the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall. In 2015, the group’s soldout tours of Australia and the United States prompted the Buffalo News to proclaim, “Postmodern Jukebox is literally

Created by Bradlee, the rotating collective of Postmodern Jukebox has spent the past few years amassing more than 600 million YouTube views and 2 million subscribers, performed on “Good Morning America,” topped iTunes and Billboard charts and played hundreds of shows to packedhouse crowds around the world. As NPR put it, they’ve done this by “taking current Top 40 hits and re-imagining them as coming from older eras of popular music.” In one such remake, Bradlee and Postmodern Jukebox turned Miley Cyrus’ “We Can’t Stop” into a doo-wop ditty that’s garnered over 15.4 million views. Last year, they envisioned Radiohead’s alt-rock hit “Creep” as a torch-like ballad that’s racked up over 16.9 million views and was named one of the “9 Best Viral Cover Videos of 2015” by People magazine. MultiGrammy winning artist Lorde praised Postmodern Jukebox’s vintage take on her hit single, “Royals,” which has been viewed over 15.3 million times, as her “favorite.” They recently performed a ‘30s jazz remake of Elle King’s “Ex’s & Oh’s” for MTV UK. Tickets to Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox start at $39 and are available online at SCFTA.org, at the Box Office at 600 Town Center Drive in Costa Mesa or by calling (714) 556-2787. Early Roman rituals worshiped Lupercus, the Roman god of fertility, who blessed the young men’s rites of passage. Often when Roman armies occupied conquered countries they introduced the festival of Lupercalia in which boys drew names of girls out of an urn to determine their partners for the day or even longer. Pope Gelasius decided to replace the pagan ritual of Lupercalia with the celebration of St. Valentine because a man and a woman living in intimacy was thought to be too immoral. As the St. Valentine story goes, the saint approached a couple that was arguing and asked them to make peace. After offering a rose, he told them both to hold the stem and pray to God that their love would live forever. The couple then asked St. Valentine to marry them. The news spread and many couples decided to make a pilgrimage to see the bishop on the 14th of each month, until the bishop died in 273 B.C. Long before the time of Saint Valentine, Cupid played a central role in the ancient Greek and Roman celebrations dedicated to lovers and lovemaking. Venus had a son named

Cupid, the impish archer and “go-between” we know of today. Cupid came to represent the many aspects of love: playful, tender, sexual, and passionate. His invisible arrows of sweet destiny would pierce the hearts of both mortals and gods alike, making them fall hopelessly and helplessly in love, oftentimes beyond all hope or reason! We know Cupid as a smiling mischievous child armed with his bow and arrow ready to pierce lovers’ hearts with romantic love. Originally, he was shown as a handsome young man with a bow and arrows. But, the Victorian era wanted to help make Valentine’s Day more proper for women and children. So, they tossed out this handsome Roman Adonis guy and made cupid more of a chubby baby! Since then, Valentine’s Day has been celebrated every year throughout the world, with couples exchanging flowers, sweets and gifts, all with a single objective – to devote 24 hours to the celebration of their love. In February, come and see how Cupid’s arrows can pierce even the black hearts of three bandits in the melodrama Three Bandits and a Baby – a world premiere opening February 24th! FEBRUARY 2017
