Tax Planning vs. Tax Preparation: What’s the Difference & What Type of Firm Do You Need?

Prescott Tax & Wealth Management (PTWM) is an Orange County based tax and wealth management firm that is dedicated to making a difference in our clients’ personal and professional lives. The firm caters to high-net worth individuals and small business owners who want and deserve a more comprehensive approach to their financial affairs.

Now before we describe the key differences between tax planning and tax preparation firms, we want to encourage you to ask yourself a few important questions:

1. Do you meet with your CPA more than once a year?

2. Does your CPA proactively assist with tax-mitigation strategies throughout the year?

3. Does your CPA update you on key tax law changes?

4. Are you able to communicate and meet with your CPA outside of “tax season?”

Unfortunately, for most, the answers to the above questions are no, and there is a critical need for the aforementioned services, especially for high-net-worth individuals and business owners.

What’s

the Difference?

Tax preparation focuses on completing and filing necessary forms during tax season, aiming to comply with state and federal laws correctly and in a timely manner. This process typically occurs once a year, post the close of the financial year. This step is necessary and extremely important, especially in the eyes of the IRS; however, it’s just one piece of the pie.

Tax planning is a year-round process that goes beyond compliance, aiming to maximize tax savings and minimize penalties for clients. It considers past filings, current financial situations, and future goals, requiring ongoing communication between the client and their tax planner. Tax planning is a more comprehensive, long-term strategy that sets plans for both immediate and future financial benefits.

What Type of Firm Do You Need & What Are the Benefits of Tax Planning?

If you own and operate a business, are a highnet worth individual, own real estate and/ or looking for a comprehensive approach, we believe you would greatly benefit from

working with a firm like ourselves that specializes in tax planning services.

If you wait until the last minute, it may be too late to make changes or decisions that lead to meaningful outcomes. When you are engaged in consistent tax planning, you can make decisions throughout the year that provide the following benefits:

1. Reduce liabilities. Identify more opportunities to decrease your tax liabilities so you can potentially pay less in taxes.

2. Maximize deductions. Find tax deductions you may have missed that could decrease your tax liabilities.

3. Improve cash flow. Manage your cash flow by having a better idea of how much you owe in taxes and by making quarterly payments.

4. Maximize retirement contributions. Contributing to retirement accounts not only can reduce taxes, but also improves your retirement probability.

5. Consider tax impact prior to investing. Consider tax regulations and laws while investing your money with the goal of higher after-tax returns.

6. Assist with legal compliance. Avoid making errors that can lead to penalties, interest charges, and expensive audits.

7. Avoid unexpected tax bills. Project your tax liability and make regular payments so you aren’t caught off guard by a large tax bill.

8. Support estate planning and wealth preservation. Keep an eye on the future

by setting up financial plans that can keep wealth in your business or in your family.

9. Gain peace of mind. Stop wondering if you are doing the right things with your money. Work with a professional who can ensure that you are following the rules while maximizing the benefits for your business.

Why Prescott Tax & Wealth Management?

PTWM now has 6 CPAs and an Enrolled Agent with over 150 years of combined experience. As a multigenerational firm, we believe our family office approach can provide you with the holistic financial service you deserve.

If you have an idea in your mind’s eye that bubbles up to the surface when I mention the town of Santa Barbara, I’m not going to try and convince you that it isn’t accurate. It likely is. Sun-soaked sandy shore, beautiful mountains to the northeast, and in between, all the good food and family fun you could ask for. There are beautiful towns, and then there’s Santa Barbara.

West of France and just north of Los Angeles lies one of the best kept secrets in the world of wine. A destination for a great many reasons pristine beaches, incredible shopping, local dining and wine that keeps folks coming back for more.

Stretching back through the annals of California history, from the Mission to the Pueblo era, grapes have been growing in the approved American Viticultural areas. Combining traditional, hand-made techniques with the latest innovations in grape growing and wine making, Santa Barbara

Sun Soaked Santa Barbara Staycation

continues to see cutting-edge results and flavors come through the county.

Since the 1970’s, when viticulture pioneers expanded the growing varietals, more than 275 vineyards have sprung up, contributing to a hefty economic value per harvested acreage. Not that you’re traveling to see the outcome of bringing 9,000+ jobs to the area through one industry, but keeping the coast in its cups is no small feat. The grapes, always unique and bullheaded, take advantage of east-west valleys running through the coastal Santa Ynez and inland San Rafael range. Hearty, sun-kissed, and delectable, there’s no better time to visit than the present.

For our recent visit, we selected a pair of downtown tasting rooms to sample local varietals - Grassini Family Vineyards and Longoria on State. Both were lovely - the first, located just off State Street in the Historic Presidio Neighborhood – Grassini is a boutique winery specializing in the handcrafted production of wines made exclusively from Bordeaux varietals grown on the Grassini estate vineyard in the Happy Canyon AVA (American Viticultural Area) of Santa Ynez. Established by pioneer winemaker Rick Longoria, Longoria Wines has been producing acclaimed artisanal wines from sone of the finest vineyards in the region for more than 40 years. Purchased in 2022 by Brooke and Lindsay Christian, the winery continues its tradition as a family-owned and operated establishment. The tasting room, located in the heart of the bustling shopping and dining destination on the State Street Promenade, captures the city’s

coastal chic vibe in its warm, welcoming space. The service is super attentive and the wines were divine. We purchased bottles at both tasting rooms to extend our Santa Barbara wine tasting experience at home.

Speaking of home, our home base during our weekend staycation was the intimate and elegrant Brisas del Mar, Inn at the Beach. Ideally situated within walking distance to virtually everything we wanted to explore (just two blocks from the glistening, palm-lined beach and scenic yacht harbor and a few minutes stroll to State Street), Brisas del mar is a Santa Barbara classic in terms of its accommodation and Old World ambiance. The suite we selected was super spacious, with plenty of room for the four of us to stretch out and its full kitchen came in handy as a pit stop to refuel and refresh between excursions.

The hotel serves a fresh continental breakfast and beverages each morning, which was the perfect way to start the day. In the afternoon, the hotel hosts a wine and cheese reception and in the evening? Cold milk and scrumptious cookies. What more could we ask for?

SANTA BARBARA PARASAIL

Feeling adventurous? Strap in for an exhilarating flight with Santa Barbara Parasail, California’s top-rated parasail operator. Never heard of it? Think about any action movie you’ve ever seen, where a parachute unfurls over an azure sea, and lofts the good guy into the sky from the back of a

glistening speedboat deck: now just put yourself in the seat! Take a cruise 1000 feet over the sea and enjoy incredible views of the Channel Islands, Santa Barbara’s splendid south-facing coastline, or simply let the breeze flow through your hair and the sun kiss your face. With flight times varying from 8-15 minutes and a minimum rider age of 5, there’s no better time to fly, and certainly no time for regrets.

TROLLEY TOUR

Visiting The American Riviera at any time of year is a treat, but not having to hoof it on your own two legs while seeing the sights has a special place in my heart. There is no better way to experience Santa Barbara than by trolley. Fully narrated, the original SB Trolley Tour has been in operation for over 30 years, showcas-

ing the community and its hot spots: the Courthouse, Zoo, Museum of Natural History, and of course, Santa Barbara’s historic mission - founded in 1786. The tenth of the California Missions, Santa Barbara has grown

to include some of the most beloved sights along the entire California coast.

SANTA BARBARA ZOO

Home to more than 500 animals, this zoo-with-a-view is set on 30 acres near the Santa Barbara waterfront. The California Trails exhibit complex features threatened and endangered California natives like the spectacular California condor, Channel Island foxes, bald eagles, California desert tortoises, and threatened reptiles and amphibians native to nearby Los Padres National Forest, underscoring the zoo’s dedication to sailing preservation and conservation in the natural world.

My daughter and I especially loved the Australian Walkabout, a 15,000

square-foot habitat that transports guests “Down Under,” where they can walk among the wallabies, kangaroos, emus and native birds. And we literally spent a half an hour oohing and aahing over the zoo’s newest addition: a Masai giraffe calf born on November 2nd.

HORSEBACK RIDING ON THE BEACH

It’s a no brainer to imag ine that every activity on the California coastline would be sun-drenched and cinematic. It would follow then, that taking a beach ride with Los Padres Outfitters and their magnificent horses would be at least a majestic way to spend an afternoon: and at best, a core memory you’ll carry for years to come. Starting in the hills of Summerland, and meandering down a trail to the sandy expanse of Santa Barbara’s southern-facing shores (the longest stretch in the US outside of Alaska), the ride gives you time with a knowledgeable wrangler and some of the most well-trained, friendly horses in California. Book a private group ride for the whole family, or steal away while the kids are streaming a movie in the hotel room and watch the sun set over the sparkling Pacific together. Either way, let Los Padres use their local knowledge to wow you with an adventure you’ll be talking about for years to come. And then there’s dining ... with so many options, you’ll have your work cut out for you in deciding upon on the culinary adventure in which to embark each evening. For our part, we indulged in two distinctly different offerings - Loquita and Gala.

LOQUITA

This lively eatery showcases authentic Spanish dishes, including hot and cold tapas, wood-fired seafood and meats and its signature seasonal paella. Our family loved the chorizo y pollo which arrived chock full of the flavorful pork sausage, rocky freerange chicken, gigante beans, hen of the woods, salmorra, shishito and lemon aioli.

A sweet treat at meals end? My husband and I barely enjoyed a taste of the churros with dulce de leche, passionfruit vanilla and Mexican chocolate - it was all arms and elbows as our teens literally devoured the dessert.

The Mediterranean climate and terroir of Santa Barbara County mirror that of Spain, making the translation of locally sourced produce, meats and seafood an ideal match. The wine list is composed almost entirely of Spanish wines with exceptional local wines that pair well with the cuisine.

GALA

Our new favorite downtown eatery? Gala, which opened earlier this year, has already made a name for itself with its elegant ambiance and a perfectly executed menu

of delectable dishes - some remain constant while others rotate daily per seasonal offerings and inspiration depending on what looks good at the farmer’s market and what local divers are bringing in.

High ceilings, wide open windows, a large bar overlooking the bustle of State Street define the space - these define the vibrant space that its owners Tara Penke and Jaime Riesco envision as the “a true neighborhood restaurant where lawyers and surfers rub shoulders.”

Having spent 20 years in Barcelona (and owning a restaurant there) and here in Santa Barbara, the couple utilize farmers market and fish market ingredients in every plate to create a flavorful spin on an eclectic menu that includes small bites, entrees, seafood specialties.

Think inventive dishes like the crunchy ‘coca’ Catalan flatbread, salmon gravlax toasties (house-cured salmon, creme fraiche, dill, radish, fried capers) and oyster mushroom risotto which deliciously combines butter, thyme, parm, oyster and portobello mushrooms.

With plenty to do, see and eat just over an hour from Los Angeles, there’s no better time to visit the American Riviera - because, well, there’s no bad time to visit.

Cefali & Cefali, APC

Trusted Accident Attorneys for the Most Serious Injuries

It’s a remarkable feeling when you can find someone to take your side. In relationships, sports: you name it. That one person who believes in you, makes you better, fights alongside you.

Michael Cefali matched with his person (his wife Courtney) long before law school - but their partnership extended through the long years studying for the bar and paid off in an even match that has stacked up in their favor many times over. Graduates of Chapman Law and California Western, respectively, they started the San Juan Capistrano-based Cefali & Cefali, APC in July of 2019 and have been fighting for the little guy ever since. From setting clients up with top-tier doctors and specialists, to negotiating stellar settlements, Cefali & Cefali, APC handles cases from start to finish with client health as their top priority.

Focusing on all aspects of personal injury, the Cefalis are what you might expect in such a ring: passionate, aggressive, and most importantly, honest - all traits that have contributed to the couple having recovered millions of dollars per year on behalf of their clients since opening their firm.

“The insurance companies would like you to think that they get to determine the value of your injuries, your suffering,” says Michael. “We’ll fight for every last penny because we know that you deserve it.” Clients appreciate the work that the Cefalis do. In fact, as of the date of this publication, you won’t find a single negative review of their firm anywhere on the internet.

Client Jamie shares, “I am so grateful for everything that Mike Cefali and his team did for me! Not only was he able to help me get what I was owed in my settlement and then some, but he was so responsive and kind and

it was very apparent that he cared about me and my case! He and his team are so HONEST and FAIR and it was clear from start to finish that he had my best interest in mind! Not only is he a good lawyer but he is a good person which made a world of difference for me. I could not have asked for a better experience with a personal injury attorney! I have already recommended him to all of my friends and I will continue to recommended him to anyone looking for a good lawyer! Thank you so much Cefali and Cefali!”

Another client Carrie echoes Jamie’s sentiment, “My husband and I were rear-ended on the freeway. We felt bad thinking of contacting a lawyer, but after several months of continuous pain and medical treatments, a friend recommended Michael Cefali. From the beginning, he lived up to his core values of integrity, loyalty, and vigorous advocacy. Michael is a dedicated, friendly, and competent attorney who seamlessly represented our interests and ensured the outcome was in our favor. He treated us not like a client, but like family; he

Michael and Courtney Cefali

was there any time we needed him. He was empathetic to our situation and worked tirelessly with all parties to represent us. We don’t trust many people, but we trust Michael and his team and would highly recommend him to anyone seeking a professional, effective, and focused attorney.”

With five staff members to back up the stellar work Michael and Courtney produce, the couple remain incredibly hands on, based on a culture of empathy, integrity and advocacy.

“We craft each case personally, build each one for trial, and remain accessible to clients,” says Michael. “Personal injury attorneys get a bad rap when really we’re the good guys. I like to think of our firm as a pirate ship. Nimble, clever, and tenacious in spite of being outspent by the adversary, we pry money from greedy insurance companies and give it to our very deserving clients.”

Giving back is the spirit of the firm, and community work creates a direct link between Michael, Courtney, and their circle in San Juan Capistrano. The couple and their team proudly supports a number of local charitable and community organizations including: The Boys and Girls Club of Capistrano Valley (Courtney is on the Board of Directors), The San Juan Capistrano Friends of the Library (Courtney is also a board member), CREER, the Pacific Marine Mammal Foundation, and Project Coyote. Michael is a member of the San Juan Capistrano Rotary Club and has been recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow.

The Cefali team’s ethics, constant communication (every client is given Michael’s personal cell phone for easy accessibility), commitment to their clients and involvement in the community keeps everyone growing stronger and healthier together. Remarkable isn’t it, that feeling when someone takes your side?

Unlocking Hope: 10 REASONS WHY KETAMINE TREATMENT COULD TRANSFORM YOUR BATTLE AGAINST DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY

As medical doctors deeply committed to the well-being of our patients, we understand the challenges many individuals face when conventional treatments for depression and anxiety fall short.

In recent years, a groundbreaking approach has emerged as a beacon of hope for those who have exhausted other options—ketamine therapy. Here are ten compelling reasons why you should consider ketamine treatment when other medications or talk therapies haven’t provided the relief you seek.

Rapid Relief: Unlike traditional antidepressants that may take weeks to months to show results, ketamine often produces rapid relief. Many patients experience a noticeable improvement in their symptoms within hours or days, offering a swift solution for those who can’t afford to wait for relief.

Targeting Treatment-Resistant Depression: Ketamine has demonstrated remarkable efficacy in treating individuals with treatment-resistant depression/ anxiety—those who have not responded adequately to multiple antidepressant/ antianxiety medications. This breakthrough has provided a renewed sense of hope for those who have felt trapped in the cycle of despair.

Reshaping Neural Pathways: Ketamine doesn’t just alleviate symptoms; it actively works to reshape neural pathways. By promoting the growth of new synaptic connections, ketamine facilitates neuroplasticity, enabling the brain to reorganize itself and form healthier patterns of thought. Unlike traditional medications which are merely band aids for one’s symptoms, ketamine’s action to promote new neural connections actually treats the source of one’s disease.

Enhanced Response to Talk Therapy: For individuals who have struggled to

connect with traditional talk therapy, ketamine can act as a catalyst, enhancing the effectiveness of psychotherapy. This synergistic approach allows patients to engage more deeply in their therapeutic process, leading to profound insights and breakthroughs.

Reducing Suicidal Ideation: Studies have shown that ketamine can rapidly reduce suicidal ideation in patients with severe depression. This is a crucial aspect, especially for individuals facing acute crises, as it provides a lifeline during moments of extreme vulnerability.

Customized Treatment Plans: Ketamine treatments are highly customizable, allowing healthcare professionals to tailor the dosage and frequency based on individual needs. This personalized approach ensures that each patient receives the optimal therapeutic benefit, addressing their unique struggles with depression and anxiety.

Long-Lasting Results: Ketamine treatments have demonstrated the potential for long-lasting relief, with some patients experiencing sustained improvement for weeks or even months after a course of treatment. This contrasts with the shortlived effects of some traditional antidepressants.

Mind-Body Connection: Ketamine’s impact extends beyond the mind, influencing the body’s stress response systems. By modulating neurotransmitters and neurochemicals, ketamine helps restore balance to the intricate interplay between the mind and body, fostering a comprehensive sense of well-being.

Dr. Justin Yanuck, Board Certified Emergency Medicine Physician and Board Certified Pain Medicine Physician and Dr. Tanya Dall, Board Certified Emergency Medicine Physician

Low Risk of Dependency: Unlike certain medications that carry a risk of dependency, ketamine has shown a low potential for abuse or addiction when given in a controlled setting by a licensed professional. This makes it a safer option for individuals concerned about the longterm consequences of medication use.

Regaining Control of Your Life: Perhaps most importantly, ketamine therapy offers a pathway to regaining control of your life. By breaking the chains of depression and anxiety, patients can rediscover their passions, rebuild relationships, and pursue a future unburdened by the weight of mental health struggles.

In conclusion, ketamine therapy stands as a beacon of hope for those who have weathered the storm of depression and anxiety without finding solace in conventional treatments. As medical professionals, we wholeheartedly advocate for considering ketamine as a viable option, recognizing its potential to transform lives and offer a new dawn for those who have longed for relief. While the cost of treatment will certainly be a consideration, the value of reclaiming your life is immeasurable—a priceless investment in your well-being and future happiness.

Mission Viejo Wigs: Where Customers are “Family”

Mission Viejo Wigs is truly a family business. Not in the traditional sense, where its owners and operators share the same genes. But rather in such a way that every person who has walked through Owner Betty Darroch’s doors in the 30+ years she has been in operation immediately felt like a member of Darroch’s extended family.

As a professional hair and wig stylist since 1962, Betty began her career at CBS where her résumé reads like a celebrity screenplay starring the coifs of a veritable “who’s who” of Hollywood: Ann Margaret, Carol Lawrence, the Midnight Specials and the Sonny & Cher Show. She went on to work for the Hallelujah Hollywood Show at the MGM Hotel in Las Vegas.

But it wasn’t until she opened her own business in Mission Viejo that she felt as though she were “truly doing God’s work.”

Her clients today include people who are experiencing hair loss due to chemotherapy treatment, alopecia or other medical conditions. Betty specializes in wigs, hairpieces and toupees for women, men and children and carries only the highest quality brands. Each wig or hairpiece is custom fit to the client for the most natural look and feel – no one will know you’re wearing a wig unless you tell them.

received many compliments on her “new do” and no one was the wiser.

It’s been over nine years since my mother completed treatment and is now leading a cancer-free life. Although her own hair has long since grown back, she still often prefers to wear Betty’s wigs on “bad hair days.”

Thank you Betty!

“Hair loss, whether it is the result of illness, the aging process or heredity, can be a traumatic and emotionally draining experience,” says Betty. “We work with people on a daily basis who are facing the issue of hair loss for the first time. Our goal is to help you find the solution that works best for you and do so in a caring way that makes you realize that you are not alone.”

There are wonderful testimonials from longtime customers on her web site (missionviejowigs. com), but for me, the best testament to Betty’s genuine, caring nature came from a source closer to home.

When my mother was diagnosed with lung cancer six years ago, there were so many aspects of what she was facing - including the side effects associated wit chemotherapy treatment – that were out of our control. But my mother’s appearance was something she felt she could dictate. We knew she would lose her hair, but she was determined not to “look like a sick person.”

From the moment my mother met Betty, she knew she had found the right place and more importantly, the right person to help her. Betty shared so many stories of survival – of longtime customers and friends who fought a similar battle and won. Her warm embrace and inspired  hope and help steel her resolve to maintain a positive, fighting attitude when she was diagnosed with lung cancer.

The wig Betty selected was the perfect color and style for my mother’s face (and head) shape. The wig was so natural looking that my mother

There are three main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Because each has many different appearances, it is important to know the early warning signs.

Look especially for change of any kind. Do not ignore a suspicious spot simply because it does not hurt. Skin cancers may be painless, but dangerous all the same. If you notice one or more of the warning signs, see a board-certified dermatologist right away, preferably one who specializes in diseases of the skin.

ACTINIC KERATOSIS

An actinic keratosis (AK) is a crusty, scaly growth caused by damage from exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. An AK is considered a precancer because if left alone, it could develop into a skin cancer. AKs are the product of a lifetime accumulation of UV damage and typically appear on areas most commonly exposed sun, such as the backs of the hands, forearms, face, neck, and scalp.

SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells arising in the epidermis, the skin’s outermost layer. SCCs often look like scaly red patches, crusty bumps, warts, or elevated growths with a central depression. SCCs may appear suddenly and some forms are tender to touch. They can become disfiguring and sometimes deadly if allowed to grow. More than 1 million cases of SCC are diagnosed each year in the U.S., which translates to about 115 cases diagnosed every hour. Incidence has increased by 200 percent in the past three decades in the U.S., and more than 15,000 Americans die each year from this type of skin cancer.

BASAL CELL CARCINOMA

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most frequently occurring form of all cancers, with more than 4 million cases of diagnosed in the U.S. each year. BCCs may look like open sores, red patches, pink growths, shiny bumps, or scars. Any skin lesion that doesn’t heal, or bleeds with even gentle trauma, such as drying with a towel, is concerning for a BCC.

MELANOMA

Melanoma is a very dangerous form of skin cancer. Melanoma is caused mainly by intense, occasional UV exposure (frequently leading to sunburn), especially in those who are genetically predisposed to the disease. An estimated 178,560 cases of melanoma are diagnosed in the U.S. each year and is fatal for an estimated 9,320 of these patients. Fortunately, if melanoma is recognized and treated early, it is almost always curable.

WHAT PATIENTS NEED TO KNOW

1. Everyone needs to perform a self-skin exam once a month.

2. Melanoma can appear anywhere on the skin, including the palms/soles, under your nails, and places...for most, have never seen the light of day (genitalia). For this reason, it is important to look everywhere. Lock the bathroom door, get out a hand mirror, and check, it could save your life.

3. What to look for: ABCDEs, and an ugly duckling

A - Asymmetry: If I draw a line down the middle, do the sides match?

B - Border: Is there a nice crisp border, or does the mole melt into the surrounding skin?

C - Color: Moles should be one color, one shade of brown. Is there a variety of shades or additional colors, such as black, red, white, or blue?

The Proof is in the Paint with ONE WAY PAINTING

Ralph Waldo Emerson famously said “who you are speaks so loudly I cannot hear what you’re saying.” Keeping this quote in mind has served me well over the years, particularly in choosing friends … and when seeking out the services of professionals. In my opinion, integrity isn’t a word heard often enough in the business world. Competitive, certainly.

But unfortunately phrases like “bottom-line oriented,” “unscrupulous,” even “cutthroat” have cropped up in the vernacular when hearing home improvement gone wrong stories from fellow homeowners. That’s why it was so refreshing to come across Jeff McCabe and his Orange County-based One Way Painting.

In business since 1976, Jeff and his team serve all of the OC and specialize in interior and exterior residential and commercial painting. They swear by the rules of professionalism: “no cutting corners. No cheap materials. We pay attention to every detail, and never call a job complete until the customer is completely satisfied.”

Some might call it good Christian values. Others might say it’s simply good

business. But for the last 42 years, working from the heart has earned One Way Painting such a respected reputation in the industry that the vast majority of their work comes through repeat customers or referrals from repeat customers. The company’s success isn’t merely rooted in customer service though. Boasting a superior knowledge of available product on the market and hiring the most profes sional crews in the business also goes a long way.

“Our reputation speaks for itself; but if it didn’t, we have 16 satisfied employees on our permanent payroll who would put a hand up in

defense of the standards we set,” says Jeff. Standards which were born and bred through a commitment to ethical business practices and hard work. In 2001, Jeff teamed up with seasoned professional Ron Bartz as a journeyman, then took over the company when Ron retired, and has been growing it ever since.

In 2009, Jeff took the pair of threeman crews and expanded the operation to encompass six crews, two office staff, and a project manager who oversees jobs, right alongside the man with the plan himself. “We currently have four trucks on the road and I’d like a full fleet someday. I’d like to leave a legacy for my daughters, and that means more than just cans of paint and a warehouse full of equipment and materials.”

To Jeff, it means taking care of his employees, taking care of his family: taking care of business. The hope is that One Way Painting becomes a household name, for its quality of work and quality of values.

My husband and I can happily attest to both. When we moved into our home in San Juan Capistrano five years ago, we acquired quotes for exterior painting from several contractors, but were particularly impressed with Jeff and his crew. Prior to starting work at our home, Jeff came by in person to go over what the job would entail and answered all of our questions. His team showed up right on time the first day - and each subsequent day - and at the end of each day everything was cleaned up before they left.

process and followed up immediately upon completion of the job to ensure that we were satisfied with the results and our overall experience of working with One Way Painting).

Their attention to detail is found from start to finish. For exterior projects, they begin by power washing to clean and remove any loose paint, mildew or mold. Then the patching: with stucco, trenching around the foundations and priming with an acrylic. They’ll treat your wood siding, eaves, fascia,

“We pride ourselves on working with a team of long-term employees - we do not hire off the street,” says Jeff. “We guarantee our work and do not require payment till the job is completed and the customer is completely pleased with our work.”

Jeff and his crew delivered on these promises and more than exceeded our expectations - the result was outstanding work, a job completed on time and on budget and defined by unparalleled customer service (Kelly in his office was hyper-responsive to our inquiries during the estimating

windows. Main doors, garage doors, trim. Even wrought iron, or other specialty surfaces like patio covers and fences. Most work depends on the client’s preference: flat to semi-gloss, acrylic or oil finish. Inside walls see flat, matte, eggshell, satin, semi, or hi-gloss. If you have natural wood cabinets and they need refinishing, One Way’s crew will see to it that they look new again. Also licensed and bonded as commercial painters, Jeff’s crew has been making businesses and their buildings look new again for 42 years. With a free on-site estimate, your custom needs are sure to have a custom solution. No deposits required, and “no surprises along the way,” Jeff is quick to add.

“I think at the end of the day what sets us apart is taking our time with each and every customer that comes our way,” says Jeff. “We run a business like every person we interact with is family.” They may not be the cheapest out there, but then that wouldn’t fly in Emerson’s eyes, and not in Jeff’s either. “Our business is based on the Christian ethic of treating every customer with honesty and integrity. Every job is done ‘as unto the Lord.’ Does this mean we’re perfect? No. It does mean that we strive to do the best painting job possible.”

CANNED HEAT

Canned Heat rose to fame because their knowledge and love of blues music was both wide and deep. Emerging in 1966, Canned Heat was founded by blues historians and record collectors Alan “Blind Owl” Wilson and Bob “The Bear” Hite. They were joined by Henry “The Sunflower” Vestine, another ardent record collector who was a former member of Frank Zappa’s Mothers of Invention. Rounding out the band in 1967 were Larry “The Mole” Taylor on bass, an experienced session musician who had played with Jerry Lee Lewis and The Monkees and Adolfo “Fito” de la Parra on drums. The band attained three worldwide hits, “On The Road Again” in 1968, “Let’s Work Together” in 1970 and “Going Up The Country” in 1969 became rock anthems throughout the world with the latter being adopted as the unofficial theme song for the film Woodstock and the “Woodstock Generation.”

If you throw a boomerang the right way, it will come back. “And life is similar to this game with a boomerang – you sit there with a broken heart, and yet at the same time know it must go on, that you must move forward. You take a few steps forward and then a few back. That basically in some ways corresponds to the principle of a boomerang,” explains Rock/ Blues slide guitarist Eric Sardinas about the intention of the title of his Album, “Boomerang.” In the world of bass guitar there is not much Marco can’t do or hasn’t done. He has recorded and toured with some of the biggest names in the rock and music. A dynamic live performer who is equally at home at a huge stadium as a small jazz club, Marco can cover just about any musical style from jazz, fusion, world music, Latin groove to all out hard rock.

BIG MOUNTAIN

For any of you that are not familiar with their history, Big Mountain first hit the charts in 1992 with the song “Touch My Light”, a song from their debut album Wake Up. Following “Touch My Light”, Big Mountain released “Baby, I Love Your Way”, written by Peter Frampton, which has become one of the most well known love songs and mega commercial hits of all times.

THE FOUR FRESHMEN

The Four Freshmen are one of America’s most enduring vocal groups, bringing a jazz sensibility to the Great American Songbook singing with breathtaking harmony. With a sound centered around a tight 4-part vocal blend, like barbershop but jazzier, the Four Freshmen deliver a Fresh take on every tune they call, from dreamy, crooner-style ballads to swingin’, up-tempo arrangements that make a quartet feel like a big band. The Four Freshmen are Great Gentlemen of Song and True Masters of Harmony.

Los Cabos is a singular vacation destination where the desert literally meets the sea. In my humble opinion, the crown jewel of the region is the Grand Velas Los Cabos, an opulent all-inclusive resort strategically situated between La Baja’s iconic towns of San Jose Del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas.

Awarded #1 luxury hotel in Mexico on TripAdvisor in 2023, the Grand Velas Los Cabos was the first of the brand’s family of resorts that we stayed in several years ago (the other equally lavish properties include Riviera Maya on Mexico’s Caribbean coast and Yucatan jungle and Riviera Nayarit in Puerto Vallarta).

For that initial visit, we had our then pre-teen kids in tow and each generation absolutely loved everything about our respective experiences. So much so that my husband and I leapt at the opportunity to revisit last month - this time as an adults-only vacation accompanied by friends who had long heard us rave about our previous escapes - long weekends away defined by exceptional service and hospitality, exquisite cuisine, incomparable accommodations, luxurious spa treatments and panoramic azure ocean views.

Once here, you feel utterly removed from your everyday life - a sojourn that can take many different forms. A four-day family vacation with a focus on adventure, rejuvenation and sim-

ple togetherness. A relaxing couples retreat (think luxuriating spa services and whiling away a leisurely afternoon at one of three stunningly gorgeous pools overlooking the crashing waves and white sand beach below). Golf aficionados, outdoor enthusiasts, girlfriends and foodies will all find something exceptional at this all-inclusive oceanfront resort.

INCOMPARABLE ACCOMMODATION AND AMENITY

Just as we remembered, our accommodations were superb - simply magnificent in every way from the expansive space (over 1,180 sq. feet with private terraces and some with personal plunge pools) and refined decor to the premium amenities.

Each of the property’s 307 luxuriously appointed suites offer beachfront vistas where the shimmering shores of the Sea of Cortez meets the Pacific Ocean and overlooks the pools (including one for adults only with a swim-up palapa bar) and perfectly manicured landscaping of the expansive grounds.

For spa enthusiasts, the Grand Velas offers one of the most spectacular sanctuaries for the spirit (services here are not part of the all-inclusive, but are a wonderful opportunity for true pampering). As you might expect, SE Spa by Grand Velas features a comprehensive menu of holistic, wellness-inspired treatments, cleansing facials and therapeutic massages, based on age-old rituals and treatments; but it also offers a world-class experience, with 20 spa suites, a lavish water ritual, beauty salon and spa boutique.

Included with any treatment of 50 minutes or more, the seven-step water journey features a eucalyptus-scented steam room with chromotherapy, polar pool, aromatherapy sensory shower, sauna, jacuzzi and multi-sensory pool. A spa valet provides personalized direction to make sure guests make the most out of the truly relaxing hydrotherapy experience (how to alternate the various hot and cold rooms and pools, and how long to linger in them).

DESTINATION DINING

The dining experiences at the Grand Velas stand on their own and are likely the reason that many guests (repeatedly) travel long distances to visit. Seven on-property dining venues offer something for every taste, mood and interest. For more sophisticated palates (by that I mean parents vs. younger children), the Grand Velas features an unsurpassed pair of dining destinations: the French-influenced Piaf and the resort’s signature restaurant - Cocina De Autor, an elegant-casual dining experience for guests 18+ led by celebrated Two

Michelin Star Chef Sidney Schutte of the Netherlands and characterized by “creative cuisine” - each meal an extraordinary culinary journey - presented with exceptional service.

My husband and I fancy ourselves fledgling foodies - so an all-inclusive dining experience tantamount to a

veritable gastronomic journey around the globe (and paired with the finest of varietals)? You don’t have to ask us twice.

Aside from Piaf and Cocina de Autor, there are three casually elegant eateries: Velas 10 (steaks and seafood), Luca (Italian-Mediterranean) and Frida (gourmet Mexican) and the family-friendly Azul for casual buffet and a la carte menu.

One of my personal highlights each day was time spent lounging by the

Velas

pool and indulging in the ceviche offerings at pool-casual Cabrilla. I’m not generally a “hang out by the pool for hours” vacationer, but I literally spent the better part of each afternoon under a cabana working my way through the “cevicheria’s” menu exploring the true flavors of Mexico with an exquisite array of ceviche (the freshest of seafood and shellfish marinated in citrus and seasonings).

Although we didn’t need it this trip, I would be remiss in not mentioning the built-in amusement of Grand Velas’ Kids Club and Teens Club. Reserved especially for the younger set, the resort serves up an impressive, all-inclusive platter of activities for the kids to choose from in their very own 1,000-square- foot retreat (for kids ages 4 to 12) replete with storytell-

ing, board games, arts and crafts, bingo, movies and more for the younger set. Teens (ages 13+) enjoy their own state-of-the-art 2,700-squarefoot facility to partake in everything from healthy cooking classes, movies and foosball to Xbox and Wii. Open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., the Club is complimentary with the resort’s standard package, including dinner and group activities that stretch well into the evening hours.

there is ultimately of the atmosphere, and that comes down to two things: beauty and people.

While hospitality professionals are typically welcoming, the staff at the Grand Velas are matchless in their dedication to guest satisfaction (from the seamless check-in process upon arrival to 24-hour in-suite room ser-

vice). The personal concierge service here sets a high bar in hospitality excellence.

With all that the Grand Velas has to offer in activities, amenities, services and dining, the delight of being

As to the unrivaled beauty of its aesthetic, the Grand Velas is simply exquisitely designed. Its majestic, tiered architecture embraces the golden sand and turquoise waters of the Gulf of Mexico so at every turn you are inspired to tranquility and delight.

Between the sumptuous Grand Velas Los Cabos Resort and the soon-to-beopened Grand Velas Boutique Hotel (see sidebar), there’s really nothing holding you back from stepping into a day-to-day of exceptional service and astounding luxury. You won’t even have to write a book report on your trip afterwards, I promise.

An Ode to Personal Luxury and Anticipatory Service

In college I wrote a paper on an assigned text for the year, written by Kazuo Ishiguro, British Nobel Prize winner. The Remains of the Day details its protagonist’s long history of service as a butler at Darlington Hall. No surprise that what stood out as a college student was the lack of specialized servitude accessible to me at the time. When I tell you that my ears perked up (‘went through the roof’ as my husband tells it) at the first glance at Grand Velas Boutique Hotel’s ‘coming soon’ announcement, I mean it.

sleepy love ballads, but I guarantee Grand Velas’ boutique resort will be equally as free from the complexity and corruption of city life.

An adults-only luxury all-inclusive hotel with exclusive facilities and amenities sounds like another amazing installment of the Grand Velas brand - but add a tailored service distinctive to each guest’s tastes, needs, and preferences? Sushi Roku

It’s estimated that the average person makes roughly 35,000 decisions per day, only about 120 of which are informed - which assumes a higher level of thinking went into them, perhaps assuming that executive functions are put aside. Unsurprising that some of those decisions are about food: what am I going to eat or drink today, and when?

On the other side of that equation are the millions of minute decisions that went into formulating a single experience at Sushi Roku at Fashion Island: which incorporates innovative cuisine, incredible ambiance, first-class service, and fish. Only the freshest, finest fish from around the world serve as the centerpiece for the menu’s daily sushi and sashimi selections, signature hand and cut rolls.

There is something here for every appetite and palate as my son and I discovered on a recent mother/son night out. Full disclosure: I’m half Japanese and pride myself on personally ferreting out the region’s best sushi and omakase (leave it to the chef or the literal translation “I’ll leave it up to you”) suggested offerings. Some establishments are steeped in tradition, while others like Sushi Roku infuse the culinary scene with a wide variety of dishes with a contemporary spin.

The restaurant’s interior and ambiance is modern - think sleek lines, high ceilings and bonsai-inspired greenery throughout four distinct dining spaces: outdoor patio, spacious dining room, a bar separate from the dining room and the warm, walnut counter sushi bar.

Out of a deep respect for tradition and the desire to enmesh past and

present, the restaurant serves diverse, non-traditional ingredients from Latin America and Europe in its magnificent edible artistry (global ingredients from Japanese sauces, jalapenos from Latin America, black truffles from France

and Italian cheeses). Whether you’re craving a taste on date night or simply attending a private event at the stunning Newport Beach dining room, the staff will attend to your every need, right down to a premium sake pairing by the glass, carafe, or bottle.

Even though he can easily consume his weight in fresh fish, my 16-year-old son is my go-to sushi partner. His adventurous palate makes it especially fun to sample new and inventive fare. On this evening, our experience was an overthe-top experience of edible works of art where the freshest of seafood is delicately and perfectly balanced with extraordinary flavors and spices.

Our favorite starters? The tuna crudo (with avocado, micro greens, garlic chips, sesame chips and aji amarillo), melt-in-your-mouth baked cod enhanced with sweet miso, the American Wagyu potsticker “gyoza” and ribeye wrapped asparagus that arrives sizzling in its own cast iron skillet.

I opted for several Roku style nigiri sushi while my son went straight for the signature rolls including the crunchy spicy tuna tempura, tuna jalapeno with yuzu olive oil and cilantro. Other popular picks include the Katana roll with combines spicy tuna, shrimp tempura topped with tuna & yellowtail, spicy mayo and the Gensai, which deliciously blends cucumber, jalapeno, avocado, topped with salmon, kizami wasabi, rice cracker and yuzu olive oil.

The service here is worth a special mention - super attentive, yet unobtrusive. The atmosphere lively and upbeat. The ambiance and decor a modern aesthetic. And the food? Worthy of writing home about - every dish was delicious and artfully displayed.

Order for takeout if you aren’t in the mood to dress up, or put on your finest and order one of each item drizzled with the truffle miso glaze. Trust me: it’s not a decision you’ll regret.

Ask a SOMM

A good sommelier is a helper, a guide to finding the best wine for your food and experience. For this month’s installment, we again approached South County-based sommelier Micah Sampson to address a few frequently asked questions.

Q Should I pay attention to wine ratings? What do they mean?

A At the end of the day all wine ratings really are are opinions and scores from people who drink and know a lot about wine.

So if you need some help picking out a wine from a region you know nothing about, then sure, take a look at an online magazine and see what some of the ratings say. Generally, 88-90 points and higher mean the wine is going to be good. But once you get to the high 90’s you’re likely going to be paying a lot more for them, mainly because they have the high rating.

But I can let you in on a little secret, many amazing producers out there don’t even get their wines rated! The best way to find these is to look for wines with high ratings, remember the areas they come from, and then look for other producers in the same areas. You can often find killer wines for a fraction of the price when doing it this way. Another secret… this is exactly the way Somm’s Stash wines are made

Q How long do wines stay good after opening?

A This is an easy one, but still important. In general, wines will still be good for a day or two after you open them, but will start to degrade a bit from the moment you open them. Usually by day three you’ll notice the wines aren’t as good as they were when first opened, and by days four and beyond the wines just don’t taste right.

A little hint to get an extra day or two out of opened red wine is to seal the bottle with a cork or rubber stopper and store the half empty bottle in the fridge! The low temp in the fridge helps slow the degradation process. Just let the wine slowly warm up in a glass when you want one, cupping your hands around the glass will speed this up a bit.

Q What are sulfites and are they bad?

A We’ve all heard it… “Do you have any wines without sulfites? They give me headaches.” This is when the som-

melier mentally puts his or her palm to their face.

In the recent social-media-driven years, the word “sulfites” has become the new bad word in wine. But why? When did we become so focused on this one component in wine, treating it like a poison? It’s mentioned with an almost villainous undertone now, like some evil wizard is adding it to wine when no one is looking.

In reality, sulfites have been a known part of wine making for a thousand years. They are harmless to almost everyone and occur naturally in all wines. Yes… I said naturally in all wines.

Sulfites occur as part of the fermentation process, a natural byproduct of yeast metabolism during the conversion of sugar to alcohol. They are completely harmless to over 99% of all people.

In fact, the human body produces sulfites, a whole bunch of it, there’s already about 10 times more sulfites in you on a daily basis than a bottle of wine.

The thought of sulfites being a synthetic chemical added to wine is just a misguided fear. Winemakers might add additional small quantities near the end of fermentation to halt the process, but that’s the natural way to do it, like turning on the lights at the end of a dance party.

It’s also added during bottling as an antioxidant to help prevent spoilage. But, they only use what is needed to complete those stages, usually using amounts far within acceptable boundaries.

Sulfites do two things really well: they bond with oxygen molecules, keeping the wine from oxidizing into vinegar, and they push bacteria out of the wine to keep it from spoiling. Sulfites are like bouncers at the door of a bar, keeping the bad people out without ruining the party.

With a 60-year career as an entertainer, Olivia Newton-John was a celebrated artist whose work impacted and inspired so many people around the globe. It all started with music, of course. She was a four-time Grammy Award winner who music career included fifteen Top 10 songs, including five songs that made it to #1. Her enormous popularity carried over to the movies too, where she secured her legendary status by starring in such iconic roles as Sandy in Grease and Kira in Xanadu.

Pets of the Month

One year old Brody is a happy boy who loves to snuggle. Energetic and very playful, he is looking for an active family to call his own who can continue with his obedience training. Brody is a friendly pup, but would do best as the only pet in the home so he doesn’t have to share the spotlight.

Meet Sunny, a two year old mama cat now available for adoption. After raising five rambunctious kittens, it’s finally Sunny’s time to shine. She is an independent kitty, but still enjoys being petted and pampered. While she gets along with other like-minded cats, Sunny prefers to be Top Cat and wouldn’t mind living solo.

Medicare Part B Costs Increase in 2024

The majority of Medicare beneficiaries don’t’ pay a premium each month for Part A, but they do for Part B. Their Part B premium will be automatically deducted from their social security check and if they aren’t taking social security yet then they get a bill from the Medicare (aka the government). The standard premium for Medicare Part B (outpatient and doctor services) in 2023 was $164.90. In 2024 it will increase to $174.70. So, the reprieve you had last year with the Part B premium decrease has gone away, and once again there is an increase in your Medicare Part B premium.

The Medicare Part B deductible also increased; from $226 in 2023 to $240 in 2024.

If your modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) is above a certain amount, you will pay an Income Related Adjustment Amount (IRMAA). Medicare uses the modified adjusted gross income reported on your IRS tax return from 2 years ago. The IRS provides this information to Social Security. Notices for your IRMAA amounts have begun to arrive in the mail for 2024, so keep an eye out for that to avoid any surprises in the new year.

There are 5 higher income brackets that cause a person to pay more for their Medicare Part B and an added assessment to their Part D (drug) coverage. In 2024 IRMAA will be assessed when an individual’s MAGI is above $103,000 and a married couple’s MAGI is above $206,000.

Capistrano Unified School District Language Immersion

The Capistrano Unified School District Language Immersion program started in 1992, and develops high levels of biliteracy, cultural appreciation and academic success in students. With programs in Spanish and Mandarin beginning in preschool and continuing to graduation, students receive a premiere dual-language education that is “additive bilingual,” meaning the student’s first language continues to be strengthened and augmented while acquiring a second language.

Spanish is taught in a Two-Way Immersion program, which is structured with an equal number of students who are monolingual or dominant in English and students who are monolingual or dominant Spanish, at the time of enrollment. Mandarin is taught in a One-Way Immersion program, with the majority of students dominant in English at the time of enrollment. The Mandarin preschool–grade 12 program is the only public program in Orange County and one of only a handful in California.

The Language Immersion program focuses on the goals of bilingualism,

biliteracy, academic achievement, and sociocultural competence. Language Immersion students develop high levels of language proficiency and literacy in both program languages, demonstrate high levels of academic achievement and develop an appreciation for and understanding of diverse cultures. An average of 52% of Language Immersion students take one or more AP/IB classes, and 98% of Language Immersion students earn a score of 3 or higher on the AP Spanish Language Exam

. In the fall of 2022, the Language Immersion program received a Golden Bell Award from the California School Board Association (CSBA) in the English Learner/Biliteracy category. The Golden Bell Awards promote excellence in public education and school board governance, and CUSD was honored for having a highly comprehensive and effective program.

The Language Immersion program continues to grow each year, in both enrollment and capability. Families interested in learning more can visit the Language Immersion website on capousd.org

How do we as parents inspire and empower our children to become environmental stewards, building hope instead of harboring “ecophobia” (afraid to do anything positive for the environment because it all seems so hopeless)? No matter how young your child/children are, they can become an engaged steward at every age and at any stage of their development.

Studies have shown that today’s children are more anxious, more distracted, and less healthy than the last generation. It may be hard to believe yet the average child spends more than seven hours a day in front of a glowing screen and less than 20 minutes in active outdoor play! At the same time there is mounting evidence that exposure to nature while growing up reduces stress, improves physical and mental health, stimulates creativity, builds self-esteem, and encourages co-operation, collaboration, and self-regulation. Further studies have shown that regular exposure to nature is the single most important factor in fostering care and concern for the environment. With that in mind, here are ten simple tips to teach environmental lessons to those children and adults too, in your life.

1. LEAD BY EXAMPLE. Have you heard that a picture is worth a thousand words? Well, an action is worth millions. The same way your kids could learn an appropriate behavior can be used to develop environmental awareness.

2. TAKE YOUR KIDS OUTSIDE. Learning to enjoy nature is the first step to care about it. Studies show that more outdoor activity can improve your overall health and help reduce obesity and other diseases.

3. TEACH CHILDREN TO USE THE APPROPRIATE RECEPTACLE FOR THEIR WASTE: REDUCE, REUSE, AND RECYCLE AS MUCH AS YOU CAN. Little things, like packing a waste-free lunch, can provide a powerful lesson for your children. Get a favorite character reusable lunch bag, fork and spoon that your child can reuse; encourage your little one to drink water from a reusable water bottle; and buy more organic fruits for snacks.

4. GIVE THEM CHORES, LIKE HELPING YOU CLASSIFY YOUR RECYCLABLES. As a reward, they can save money earned by recycling to buy a cool toy.

5. WORK TOGETHER IN A GARDEN OR COMPOST PROJECT. If you can, buy one plant for them to learn to take care of; it’s a fun way to grasp how plants need sun, water, and soil. Use your senses, and enjoy the flowers. Take them to a compost garden to see the worms in action, how they can decompose since science and the environment, are an important part of the life cycle.

6. TEACH THEM TO CLOSE THE FAUCET WHILE BRUSHING AND BATHING. Water is precious. Turn off the water while brushing their teeth or soaping up during bath or shower time. You can use stickers as a reward for remembering to save water.

7. FLIP THAT SWITCH! When you are out of the room, your toys don’t need the lights on. You can order a free sticker to remind you to switch

them off. Better yet, make your own sticker.

8. PARTICIPATE IN A BEACH CLEANUP. It’s does make a difference! If you live near a beach, visit a tide pool or enjoy other beach activities that help them realize the importance of keeping the ocean clean. And don’t forget, at the end of a visit to a beach or waterway, pack up and carryout all that you brought in, especially the trash!

9. GIVE AWAY TO OTHERS THE TOYS AND CLOTHES THAT YOU DON’T USE. Sharing is nice. Take your kids with you when you donate to make them aware of the people in need, while keeping more items out of the landfill.

10. THE SAME WAY YOU TEACH KIDS TO RESPECT OTHERS, YOU CAN TEACH THEM TO RESPECT NATURE. In your bedtime story, incorporate environmental books. Make a movie night more educational with one that teaches about the consequences of endangering our environment. You can also download a cool app (eBook’s or games) to teach little ones about environmental conservation. Remember kids learn by playing and doing!

Imagine the journey of stewardship as a pathway. Along this journey, children need certain experiences in nature and in the world around them as they grow to become confident and active stewards.

Teaching children to take care of the planet is an insurance policy for the future, and doesn’t need to cost money or be all that difficult. Simple, user-friendly resources are available for use at home and in the classroom and present sustainability as an opportunity that everyone has a stake in. It takes a village to raise a child, and takes a collective community of conscious individuals to raise the next generation of environmental stewards.

Tom and Donna, credit their success to date to the quality of customer service they and their team give their customers, which in turn creates a wonderful repeat and referral business. “Although there may be providers of similar products, there is no one that can match our superior customer service – from showing up on time, making precise measurements and flawless installations - and with a professional ‘can do’ attitude,” says Donna.

Tom adds that “our pricing with unbeatable discounts, sales support and the fact that we offer our customers an in-house design team at no additional charge is the first step in setting us apart from our competition. I am proud to say that we have built a reputation in the business for having the highest quality, best beauty, fit and finish and value available. All of our products come with a lifetime warranty.”

A 5-Star Yelp rated company, South Coast Shutter and Shades boasts scores of glowing testimonials online, including Debora R of Laguna Niguel who writes "Donna and Tom are amazing! Great products, great prices, great service.I've used them twice for two different businesses and I could not be happier. Donna makes suggestions based on what I tell her

my needs are and she has been spot on with her recommendations. Installations by Tom are quick and easy. Highly recommended!"

Another reviewer, Doug W. of Mission Viejo posted that "From the first call, I knew I was dealing with a reputable, experienced, HONEST company. Donna and Tom are absolute PROS and obviously take pride in their work … Their price was very competitive. Also, what they quote is what you pay - keep that in mind when talking to the "other guys" whose price seems to go up and up. All appointments including install were FAST. The installation was flawless. I had a question later that evening about my motorized shades and they called me back IMMEDIATELY. My impression is that I could call them 5 or 10 years from now and they would just as helpful."

Medicare Prescription Payment Plan

In August of 2022 President Biden signed the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 into law.

The new drug law makes improvements to Medicare by lowering drug costs and improving the sustainability of the Medicare program for generations to come.

For the first time, beginning in 2025, the new drug law requires that all Medicare prescription drug plans, referred to as Medicare Part D plans, both stand-alone drug plans and Medicare Advantage plans with prescription drug coverage to offer enrollees the option to pay outof-pocket prescription drug costs in capped monthly installment payments instead of all at once at the pharmacy. This will be very helpful for people who have a Part D deductible that needs to be paid first before drug copays begin. (In 2024 it can be as high as $545). CMS (Centers for Medicare/Medicaid Services) has named this program the “Medicare Prescription Payment Plan”.

Starting with plan year 2025, Part D Enrollees may opt into the program

prior to the beginning of the plan year, or in any month during a plan year. They do this by notifying the Part D sponsor (insurance company) and they then complete the Medicare Prescription Payment Plan election process. This process will be available by mail, toll-free numbers, or website application. All of these options must be provided by the Part D insurance carrier and must be processed within 24 hours when an enrollee is already enrolled in the Part D plan.

Part D enrollees who opt into the program will pay $0 at the pharmacy for their covered drug instead of the co-pay they would normally pay when filling the prescription. The Part D insurance company must then bill program participants in monthly installments for the co-pays or cost sharing incurred. The pharmacies will be paid directly by the Part D insurance companies.
