elaborate upon their ideas, and learn to sequence and connect them together. Young writers learn to develop these skills over time through play, storytelling, writing practice, and in modeled conversations with adults or older peers.

When should children start learning to write?

Ideas & Insights: Helping Your Child Develop Strong Writing Skills “You can make anything by writing.” – C.S. Lewis, Writer and Author As adults, we write for a reason: to write a letter, to make a list, to leave a note, to communicate with a friend in a letter or e-mail or to create a story.

Children learn to write most easily when they write with purpose too, rather than being told what they should write about.

L

ike all other things, learning to write is a process. When children realize that writing communicates meaning, they begin to experiment with it and usually start by using scribbles on a page. From there they start to use symbols that look like letters and then they use real letters although they may go back and forth using real letters and their own symbols. These are exciting first steps, because it shows that children are aware of a difference between drawing and writing and you can support them by asking what the writing says.

Over time, as children are exposed to examples of writing in their environment and in the books you read with them, they gradually incorporate the use of punctuation and conventional spelling as they pick up “mistakes” in their own writing and rewrite words 8

or letters. While they start out writing mainly to record and communicate messages, as you keep reading with them you will notice that they begin to write their own simple stories.

As we continued to explore how a child develops these skills, we had an opportunity to ask Allison Willson, Senior Director of Curriculum and Innovation at Stratford School questions about how children are learning to write in school and below we’d like to share her expertise: How do children learn to write, focusing on the act of writing itself and not physical handwriting?

To learn the skills to write stories, early learners must not only learn to handle a writing tool, but also learn how to generate ideas (brainstorm),

Writing is a complex skill that develops over time. Though your toddler won’t yet have the ability to write stories, they can certainly engage in experiences that support future reading and writing. Fine motor control and drawing are young children’s first steps toward writing. They will then progress to scribbles meant to mimic handwriting before reaching conventional writing and spelling. You can encourage your budding author to draw pictures that depict stories, their feelings and/or observations of their world.

What does the current research say about teaching kids to write and what teaching practices are currently used in schools?

Current research suggests that to write stories, young children must learn not only to handle a pencil or other writing device but also to generate ideas, elaborate upon them, and sequence and connect them coherently. Children develop these skills through scaffolded play, storytelling, writing practice, and in conversations – particularly with adults and older children. Knowing what we know about how children acquire these skills, early childhood classrooms should provide frequent opportunities for writing practice throughout the day through play and practice. (e.g., “Let’s create a list for our grocery store today.”).

Explain the link between reading and writing.

Reading and writing support each other. The more your child does both, the stronger their overall literacy skills will be. At an early age, children thrive on modeled behaviors. The act of listening to stories, poems, and

other texts, provides opportunities for our little ones to experience the writing process. By orally retelling stories, drawing or acting out read alouds, young children understand narrative or story structure (beginning, middle, and end) which they then can apply to their own stories. We often encourage children to retell the stories in their own words or extend this learning by encouraging our young authors to reimagine the ending.

How can parents help children learn to write at home?

Model. Writing is practical and an incredibly important part of our daily lives. Model for your child ways in which you use writing (e.g., “Let’s create a list for your birthday party!

What will we need and who should we invite?”).

Provide Time and Space for Drawing and Discussion. Drawing allows little ones to develop their fine motor skills while also expressing their thoughts and feelings. Ask your child

questions about their drawings, for example: “What is the boy/girl doing?”, “Does the house look like ours?”, “Can you tell a story about this picture?”, or “What might be a different ending if you had a chance to rewrite the story?”. You can also write their responses directly on their artwork.

Read Together. Reading and writing go hand in hand. As one muscle is built, the other is strengthened. As you read together, you can also talk about what the author did that was so effective, such as: “How did the writing make your child feel?” or “What words or phrases made you feel that way?”

Involve Everyone. Invite family members to be a part of your child’s writing journey. Send and receive cards from loved ones near or far. You can also send your child a letter or card once in a while too, so that he/she is reminded of how special they are! Create a family message board in the heart of your home to give and receive notes to the members of your family.

Encourage Inventive Spelling. As your child develops phonological awareness, encourage him/her to do their best to write words on their own based on the sound spelling.

Praise the Process. Give specific praise as your child grows in their literacy development.

Like any skill, the more time and energy put into it, the better the result. So, make writing skill development part of your family’s mission by encouraging them to talk about everything they’re interested in—and then have them write it down. Make the process fun for them and they will foster a love for writing from an early age on into adulthood.

Learning the ABC’s

at Laguna Fencing Center

I’d like you to take a little test for me. I just made my husband come over to the couch and do this as well, so you won’t be alone.

C

lose your eyes, and then have a friend/partner/child take one of your hands and position it away from your body in the air.

Then, with your eyes still closed, take your other thumb and forefinger and touch the placed thumb. Can you do it? If so, you’re properly articulated in space. Or, more properly: your proprioception is in working condition.

Proprioception, or kinesthesia, is your body’s way of telling you where you are in your environment. And it also happens to be one of the main skills of children and adults who fence.

That’s right: like, with swords. Or rather foils, sabres, and epees.

Fencing and proprioception have similar building blocks. Agility, balance, and coordination. ABC. And at Laguna Fencing Center in Orange County, Olympic coaches lead classes and private lessons that delve into the mechanics of each. There are programs for all skill levels from beginners to advanced/elite, enthusiasts ranging from youth to adults, with rolling admission so new students can join at any time.

My 14-year-old son, a freshman in high school, just started a few weeks ago, after begging to sign up for the free fencing practice lesson offered to anyone interested. Perhaps it was the recent excitement of the Tokyo Olympics, where Lee Kiefer won the United States’ first gold medal in individual foil. Maybe he just remembered playing with swords as a kid.

Or more likely it's that two of his best buddies have been longtime students at Laguna Fencing Center and truly excel at the sport - something our son thinks is infinitely cool and aspires to achieve. But no matter what the reason, we're thrilled because we have already seen his self-confidence skyrocket.

It’s a workout, to be sure. Somewhere between a HIIT class and ballroom dancing. Keeping his body aligned in space while also anticipating his opponent’s attack and being strategically ready to mount an instantaneous counter-attack is enough to make me sweat while watching.

It doesn’t hurt my son’s case to find out that the NCAA heavily recruits fencers, and that individual athletes are ten times more likely to “play” than in any other mainstream college sport.

How Can I Tell If I Have Skin Cancer?

There are three main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Because each has many different appearances, it is important to know the early warning signs.

ook especially for change of any kind. Do not ignore a suspicious spot simply because it does not hurt. Skin cancers may be painless, but dangerous all the same. If you notice one or more of the warning signs, see a board-certified dermatologist right away, preferably one who specializes in diseases of the skin.

WHAT PATIENTS NEED TO KNOW 1. Everyone needs to perform a self-skin exam once a month.

ACTINIC KERATOSIS

An actinic keratosis (AK) is a crusty, scaly growth caused by damage from exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. An AK is considered a precancer because if left alone, it could develop into a skin cancer. AKs are the product of a lifetime accumulation of UV damage and typically appear on areas most commonly exposed sun, such as the backs of the hands, forearms, face, neck, and scalp.

BASAL CELL CARCINOMA

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most frequently occurring form of all cancers, with more than 4 million cases of diagnosed in the U.S. each year. BCCs may look like open sores, red patches, pink growths, shiny bumps, or scars. Any skin lesion that doesn’t heal, or bleeds with even gentle trauma, such as drying with a towel, is concerning for a BCC.

2. Melanoma can appear anywhere on the skin, including the palms/soles, under your nails, and places...for most, have never seen the light of day (genitalia). For this reason, it is important to look everywhere. Lock the bathroom door, get out a hand mirror, and check, it could save your life.

3. What to look for: ABCDEs, and an ugly duckling A - Asymmetry: If I draw a line down the middle, do the sides match?

B - Border: Is there a nice crisp border, or does the mole melt into the surrounding skin?

C - Color: Moles should be one color, one shade of brown. Is there a variety of shades or additional colors, such as black, red, white, or blue?

D - Diameter: Any mole larger than 6mm, ie the head of a pencil eraser, has a higher risk of becoming melanoma.

SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells arising in the epidermis, the skin’s outermost layer. SCCs often look like scaly red patches, crusty bumps, warts, or elevated growths with a central depression. SCCs may appear suddenly and some forms are tender to touch. They can become disfiguring and sometimes deadly if allowed to grow. More than 1 million cases of SCC are diagnosed each year in the U.S., which translates to about 115 cases diagnosed every hour.

Incidence has increased by 200 percent in the past three decades in the U.S., and more than 15,000 Americans die each year from this type of skin cancer.

MELANOMA

Melanoma is a very dangerous form of skin cancer. Melanoma is caused mainly by intense, occasional UV exposure (frequently leading to sunburn), especially in those who are genetically predisposed to the disease. An estimated 178,560 cases of melanoma are diagnosed in the U.S. each year and is fatal for an estimated 9,320 of these patients. Fortunately, if melanoma is recognized and treated early, it is almost always curable.

E - Evolution: Has it changed?

F - The Ugly Duckling Sign: Most people have a “signature mole,” their own personal mole appearance and architecture. Is there a mole that seems different from all the others?

4. Everyone needs a full body skin exam by a board-certified dermatologist once a year, more frequently if you have a family history of skin cancer, a personal history of skin cancer, or live in an area with substantial sunshine.

Loaded Inheritance: Safe Gun Storage, Ownership and Disposal with California Gun Services

y grandparents owned a beautiful three bedroom casita in Solana Beach. Just up the road from the train station, their home was built in the twenties, and renovated completely when I was in high school.

When my grandfather passed away, I moved in with my grandma, doing chores around the house for her and helping to maintain the garden. One day, I was looking for my grandfather’s whetstone, to sharpen an old pair of shears, and I stumbled across his Colt Python 357 Magnum. I had to look it up - I thought it might be a relic from one of the movies he worked on in the 50’s, but according to my grandma, it was just “one of those things your grandpa just insisted on having.”

Jeff McCabe has gotten more of his fair share of calls from people like myself, who accidentally come across family firearms in their home and don’t have the first idea of what to do with them. The owner of California Gun Services, Jeff is in the business of safe gun storage, ownership and disposal. The first step? Following California gun laws. I had zero clue that by driving the Colt to the Army Navy to try and turn it in I’d be breaking a couple laws. According to Jeff there are laws restricting gifting or selling a gun, receiving a gun, borrowing a gun, transporting a gun, even storing guns. New laws come out every year, and it is almost impossible for anyone, even aficionados to keep up with them. Jeff and his team work closely with local law enforcement to ensure the process is easy and safe.

My grandma hadn’t touched the revolver in years, though my grandfather had made sure she shot it at some canned tomatoes on a desert trip when they were younger. “I’m afraid the grandkids might find it,” she told me that day. “I’d feel safer without it.” A sentiment shared by Jeff’s friends, family and fellow church parishioners - many of whom have sought his assistance over the years to ensure the proper storage or disposal of firearms they found themselves in possession of upon the passing of a loved one.

HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE

What initially started as a favor for a friend has grown into a bonafide side business as word has spread about Jeff’s particular skill set and confidence in handling firearms. As the owner of the Orange-based One Way Painting, Jeff often encountered situations whereby he would come across a firearm when moving furniture around for a client prior to starting a painting project. “Many times, the firearm belonged to my client’s father, grandfather or late husband and she never touched it because she was afraid of guns, but didn’t know how to get rid of it safely. So many times these guns are loaded and just stuck in a nightstand or stored under the bed.”

Raised in a family that had firearms for hunting and sporting, Jeff was taught early on how to handle, be respectful and always be safe when handling firearms. I believe that we as Americans have a great privilege to be able to own a firearm, but with that comes an even greater responsi-

bility to not only protect ourselves legally by complying with Federal and State laws, but to protect ourselves, our neighbors and most importantly, our children from all possible dangers associated with firearms.”

San Clemente resident Rhonda Murphy couldn’t agree more. “There are many things to deal with when a loved one dies. In 2010, when cleaning out my husband’s closet, I came across several of his guns. I didn’t want to keep them and was unsure of what to do with them. My daughters didn’t want the guns and I didn’t want to deal with the hassle of storing them as my grandkids are often at my house.

A friend suggested I should call Jeff. He was very nice, easy to talk with, trustworthy and knowledgable. He came to my house, checked all the guns to make sure they were unloaded and removed them. Jeff also told me that one of the guns was a collector’s item and was able to sell it for me.

As part of their auditing procedures, California Gun Services gives clients the option of a Voluntary Registration Form (in the case where the weapon was inherited). Many of Jeff’s clients are like my grandma who just prefers that the gun is destroyed. Jeff holds a Federal Firearm License and as such, is able to take possession of firearms without a Gun Transfer. He can also inspect firearms to ensure they are still in working order, and even tell you if the gun, or guns, you have are California Compliant.

California Gun Services’ processes are approved and certified by local law enforcement and adheres to all state and federal firearms laws for the following services:

GUN AUDIT

Jeff will come to you and inspect your firearms to make sure they are in proper working order and that they are California Compliant. If your firearm is not compliant with the California Law, you will receive solid advice on how to make it compliant or possibly dispose or sell it out of state.

GUN DISPOSAL

If a firearm is found to be unsafe to use, cannot be repaired and has no historical value. California Gun Services will permanently destroy it by torching the receiver or frame into three parts or cutting it with a saw into five parts. Jeff will document this with photos and log it for the Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and email you the proof of destruction.

GUN TRANSFERS

Private Party Transfers happen between two individuals and will need to take place at a Federal Firearm Licensed Dealer. Since this needs to be done at a Gun Shop, Jeff cannot offer this as an in-home service. If you have inherited or legally obtain a firearm, he can provide you with a Voluntary Registration form or you can download it from the California Department of Justice which is NOT required to do at a gun shop. California Gun Services has a Federal Firearm License and can legally come to you and take possession of a firearm without a Gun Transfer.

GUN PURCHASES OF UNWANTED FIREARMS OR COLLECTIONS

California Gun Services will come to you and appraise a single gun or an entire collection of any size. You will receive an explanation of how guns are legally sold and transferred. California Gun Services can then make you a fair market value offer and/or explain how a gun can be put up for sale on consignment.

You need to carry Medicare drug coverage. Don’t try to “work the system” by just paying cash or using “GoodRX” to buy your medications. If you don’t have “credible drug coverage” (which means it covers both generic and name brand drugs at a certain copay or co-insurance level). then you’re accruing a late enrollment penalty. If you go over 63 days without a Medicare Drug plan once you’re on Medicare, even if you add coverage the next chance you have (during the Annual Enrollment period) that penalty will be with you for the rest of your life.

If you make above $170,000 and less than $500,000 (individual) or above $340,000 and less than $750,000 you’ll pay $71.30 plus your plan premium.

If you make $500,000 as an individual or $750,000 as a married couple; you can make any amount higher than that but still pay the same Part D “IRMAA”. You’ll pay $77.90 plus your plan premium.

Surprisingly, a few of these “IRMAA” amounts are actually slightly lower than they were in 2021.

The penalty is 1% of the national average premium of a Medicare drug plan multiplied by the amount of months that you were without Part D or credible drug coverage.

Has the question come to mind about what to do if your income drops because you retire or lose a source of income? If the government bases your “IRMAA” on income reported 2 years earlier, do you need to suffer a higher premium until they catch up with your current income? The answer is “No”.
