Six Benefits of After-School Clubs
Many schools and community organizations host after school clubs for local kids. Clubs usually include interests such as team sports, creative arts, performing arts, and further exploration into academic subjects. Parents know that extracurricular activities, like after school clubs, can look good on college applications and resumes. Ralph Waldo Emerson famously said “who you are speaks so loudly I cannot hear what you’re saying.” Keeping this quote in mind has served me well over the years, particularly in choosing friends … and when seeking out the services of professionals. In my opinion, integrity isn’t a word heard often enough in the business world. Competitive, certainly.
But unfortunately phrases like “bottom-line oriented,” “unscrupulous,” even “cutthroat” have cropped up in the vernacular when hearing home improvement gone wrong stories from fellow homeowners. That’s why it was so refreshing to come across Jeff McCabe and his Orange County-based One Way Painting.
In business since 1976, Jeff and his team serve all of the OC and specialize in interior and exterior residential and commercial painting. Why Repipe when you can ?

It is safe to say that I know nothing about pipes. I know a little about drywall, and some about framing; my husband has his general contractor’s license so I’ve picked up a few nuggets of knowledge over the years - albeit in conversation, not in practice.
Pipes, however, are a complete mystery. I have family who live on the East Coast, where pipes seem to burst with some degree of frequency in the winter, but that is the extent of my experience via six degrees of separation. Since our family moved into our “new” home in San Juan Capistrano a few years ago, we have since become something of an expert on experts: those who do and don’t know anything about pipes. There are a bunch of things I can now catch you up on: leaks, sprinkler lines, lead testing. But truly, all you need to know is this: In many cases, ePIPE can have your pipes restored the same day without displacing you from your home.

Colonel Gregory G. Raths Reports for Congressional Duty

McDonnell’s “masterpiece fighting jet,” the F-4 Phantom, rolled off the production line in December 1960, as a fleet defender built to intercept nuclear foes. Delivered to Miramar Naval Air Station, the jet was eventually bound for nearly four decades of service in the U.S. military.
For a rookie pilot, the F-4 could be a little hard to handle, its two-seater capacity requiring a little more of a team effort than fighter pilots were used to; and a nose that rose notoriously slowly off the deck of an aircraft carrier. For those of us who know nothing about planes, let alone what Mach 1 or 2 mean, a slow-going-nose doesn’t sound like much. But for Colonel Gregory G. Raths, USMC (RET) it was as much of a trial as any: with a bit of speed, that slow nose could over rotate to a stall. A rather rude initiation to the Marine Corps, if you ask me.
Luckily, meeting Col. Raths is nothing like stalling out over the deck of a 45,000 ton aircraft carrier, even though his sights are currently set on becoming a U.S. Congressman this yearperhaps a task equal to lifting off the deck in a multi-million dollar war machine.

and three sisters he grew up with in Phoenix, Arizona. The fifth of eight children, Col. Raths had an early view into the life of a serviceman. His father served in the Army Air Corps from 1941-1945, as a bomber pilot during WWII, and flew combat in the European theatre in the A-20, a night fighter and adaptable light bomber mostly used by the Allied forces in World War II. His mother stayed home full time with the family, keeping the household running.
“As a kid, I mowed lawns, delivered handbills, went door to door selling anything from light bulbs to Christmas lights,” he says. Each step around the neighborhood was a step towards a life of service: to his community first as an Eagle Scout, class president, and multi-sport athlete, and eventually to his country - joining the Marine Corps Officer Candidate Program in 1972 after his freshman year at Arizona State University (ASU).
Enduring summer training at Quantico during the summers of 1973 and 1974, Col. Raths also received his Bachelor’s Degree in Business in 1975. By the time he graduated flight school in Pensacola, FL, “Vietnam was over, and the military began drawing down its forces, and reducing its
budgets. My first assignment was in Orange County, CA - at El Toro Marine Corps Air Station.”
Closed now, El Toro was long part of the vision of a developing community - a vision that Col. Raths would like to see brought back to American towns. Dwight Whiting, Boston-born founder of the town of El Toro, helped establish the first church, negotiated the arrival of the Santa Fe railroad through the valley, and saw the future of the community in its gentleman farmers: working hard and living off the wealth and proceeds of their walnut and apricot groves. Replaced now by shopping malls and a new town moniker, the vision Whiting and Col. Raths share for the country is fading, and Col. Raths believes it is time for a change.
“The American people have had enough,” he says. “We have been deceived, betrayed by our elected officials.
We need new leaders with honesty and integrity” - two traits Col. Raths learned en force through his tours aboard the USS Midway, and later as squadron commander off the carrier USS Abraham Lincoln. “Washington D.C. has proven its ineptitude, and we must not allow this dreadful sequence to continue.”
His new assignment is a personal one: One he believes must be based on solutions, not politics as usual. Courage, rather than the opinion of a special interest group, or the hope of reelection.
Col. Raths has no aspirations to become a career politician - he’s already completed a 30 year military career and spent the past fifteen years in the private sector as a commercial airline pilot, president of an automobile parts distribution firm, and is currently an author and publisher. He is the current Mayor of Mission Viejo and volunteers within his community as a member of the Elks Lodge, president of the Mission Viejo Rotary Club, American Legion, VFW, St. Kilian Knights of Columbus and Vice-Chairman of the OC Board of Supervisors Veterans Advisory Council.
He is running for office because he simply believes that “a drastically new course for this nation must be drafted” and is committed to leading that charge on behalf of his friends, neighbors and fellow citizens in California’s 45th Congressional District.
A SENIOR FOR SENIORS
When asked what types of current policy he sees as going in the wrong direction that he would correct if elected to office, Col. Raths points to the “fiscal mismanagement of programs such as Medicare and Social Security.”
“Why are members of Congress receiving pay raises and huge benefits when Social Security recipients are only receiving a 1.6 percent cost-of-living adjustment in 2020?” he asks. “Medicare co-payments, prescriptions and hospital bills are skyrocketing. I will focus on our seniors and see that they are taken care of.
“Why am I running for Congress? The answer is quite simple. We have a Congress with a 6% approval rating from the American people. Six percent. We need new leaders who are not worried about the next election or pleasing special interests groups. We can’t count on the
same politicians who got us into this mess to get us out. There is only one special interest group I am interested in serving: the people of the 45th Congressional District.”
Col. Raths brings a unique experience and perspective to negotiating Washington’s political scene. Previously having served as Chief of Staff of the White House Military Office taught Raths much about how career politicians function, and he’d like to be a force that changes those functions.
At Mach speeds, most modern aircraft must compromise in order to maintain handling ability. Supersonic speeds create shock waves, and the stronger the shock wave is, the greater the pressure difference, which causes a sonic boom. While those outside the cockpit are witness to the boom, those inside the aircraft cannot hear it. America is at the edge of Mach speed right now, cruising into the path of governmental dependence and the “damaging impact of complacency and apathy.” Col. Raths would like to take back the controls.
Overseeing military support from the White House is no small task, especially after serving in the military at such a volatile and unpopular time, and Raths is all too familiar with the stresses and victories surrounding military legislation coming from Congress. He would like to make it clear that his next battle is back in Washington, fighting for the people of the 45th Congressional District where he’d like to “fix the mess that has been created by politicians invested in maintaining their power, rather than doing what they know is right based on the principles that made this nation great to begin with.”
For our future and that of our children and grandchildren: the time to survey the scene has passed. Start those engines, ladies and gentlemen.

CAN BODYWORK SOMETIMES MAKE YOU SORE?
You’ve just had a wonderful massage, and you go home feeling both relaxed and rejuvenated. But later that night you feel like you’re coming down with something. Pets of the Month
Three year old Iris is just about as sweet as they some. She loves being in your lap and purrs when brushed. She would be a great companion and is just the right balance between independent and sociable. Iris is FIV positive and should be the only kitty in the home, but can live with other FIV positive cats.
Cranberry is a happy guy with lots of energy. A big dog personality in a small dog body, he would make a great hiking or jogging buddy. Cranberry would do well in an active home with experienced owners.
ADOPT ME
Three month old Ted is looking for a place he can finally call his own. A shy little kitten, Ted will need some reassurance from his new family and would settle in best in a quiet home environment.

All the stars were in alignment for a long weekend spent on the slopes in one of the prettiest places on the planet: Lake Tahoe’s South Shore. Our kids and our
family friends’ children (who live in Napa) ended up with the same school break schedule AND all the grownups were able to arrange time off of work to spend a few days away.
Since we’ve been back, our children haven’t been able to stop raving about the trip. In fact, they’ve been talking it up so much that friends here at home joked that someone must have put them on retainer while they were there: “they must be on commission, right?” No, no. It was just that much fun.
Our family has always been partial to the south side of the lake and some of the best memories we’ve made over the years have been on those vacations we have taken there with friends.
With some of the world’s best skiing, restaurants, nightlife, and family friendly fun all within a stones throw of what is arguably one of the most beautiful alpine lakes south of the Canadian border, it isn’t a wonder that we found more to do in a weekend than most visitors experience over a two-week vacation.
Situated on the California-Nevada Stateline, South Lake Tahoe of the only destinations in the country with all the outdoor adventure of a national park, and the amenities you might find at a world-class resort, there is something for everyone. Especially arriving in the most beautiful times of year in the American West - winter leading into early spring. January and February are peak powder months, but “later in the season” skiing at Heavenly Mountain Resort is just as fun: fewer lines and open runs beckoning to get the day started, and an apres ski cocktail or hot cocoa to end a day on the slopes –you couldn’t ask for a more idyllic way to spend the day.

Although my husband is an experienced skier (and the only one of the adults qualified to even attempt to teach the collective four enthusiastic first-time snowboarders ranging in age from nine to 12), he was more than a little overwhelmed at the prospect. So we made what turned out to be the BEST decision by signing the kids up for private snowboard lessons at the Heavenly Ski and Ride School (www.skiheavenly.com).
Our very own world-class instructor, Ryan Goralski, went way, way, way above and beyond our (and our kids’) wildest expectations in terms of amping up the fun factor and turning two half days of private lessons on the slopes into the adventure of a lifetime.

While parents can structure a private lesson “however you like” for a unique mountain experience, we left the kids in Ryan’s completely capable hands and they came back regaling us with tales of “conquering the mountain,” building their very own “Snowdawg” mascot, skipping the lines (exclusive ski school lift lanes provide quick access to the slopes), “chowing down on burgers and fries” at lunchtime and not surprisingly - spectacular, panoramic views of the lake from their vantage point atop the mountain and on the roundtrip gondola to Heavenly Village.
From world-class instruction, spectacular scenery, nightlife, family-friendly fun and everything in between … who needs a commission?

If sleeping under the stars just isn’t your cup of tea, there are myriad hotels and motels all around the South Shore. But for our family and friends, we have found the comfortable, cozy and convenient accommodation is to bypass a traditional hotel room and opt instead to rent a privately owned vacation home rich in amenity for all ages.
The Tahoe Keys Resort and Lake Tahoe Reservation Bureau (www. tahoevacationguide.com or 800-6982463) offers an extensive selection of rental homes, condos and cabins to suit your specific needs and budget – whether you’re a couple looking for a romantic retreat, a family of five or a large group of friends.
As anticipated, this trip more than delivered. Driving into the region, the views of deep gorges, craggy mountains and the tall green trees are singularly beautiful. We couldn’t have asked for a better place to stay - the deluxe mountain home we se- lected, located at 1621 Ponca, is a super spacious fourbedroom house easily accessible to everything - grocery stores, shops, the casinos at stateline. Between its location, the large, open concept living space, gourmet kitchen with all new appliances and island cooktop, renting this particular house for our four-day stay proved to be the perfect choice – we had plenty of space to stretch out and everyone had their own rooms to retreat to. The master has a king bed and private bath with jacuzzi tub and rain shower head) and in one of the three additional bedroomstwo sets of twin bunk beds ideal for the younger set.
We saved time and money by being able to cook our meals and dine in rather than eating out three times a day. A couple of cozy rock fireplaces, full wet bar, three decks and plasma screen television provided all the adult amenity while the bumper pool table and Pacman arcade game kept the kids occupied for hours.
Catalina Island on Sun-soaked Adventure

As our family boarded the Catalina Express (www.catalinaexpress.com) at the Dana Point Harbor on a sunny Sunday morning last month, I couldn’t believe it had been over five years since I’d last set foot on the picturesque island.
I wasn’t alone. As I polled local friends and family, I found that in spite of the fact that Santa Catalina Island is just an hour long ferry ride away, many of them hadn’t been back in an equal number of years or more either.

up to 30 round trip daily departures from Long Beach, San Pedro and Dana Point to the cities of Avalon and Twin Harbors - so getting there is as easy and convenient as can be. As our family disembarked in Avalon, I was struck by how little had changed since my last visit.
In fact, I think if you were to stand out on the pier and take a photo looking back at the town and compare it to one taken a half century earlier you’d be hard pressed to tell the difference.
Once a destination for big bands and ballroom dancing at the famous Casino
(which despite its name is not a gambling spot) in the 1950s and 60s, the 22-mile-long rocky island evolved over the years into a quaint, family-friendly destination defined more by glass bottom boat rides than high-end resorts.
As far as I’m concerned, that fact is a large part of its charm. Catalina’s slow pace and the sense of stepping back in time was essential to achieving the true “get away from it all” experience we were seeking for our overnight “mini vacation.”
Catalina’s main town of Avalon is only one square mile and is ideally explored on foot or by golf cart or electric bike. As the number of cars on the island has been restricted since the 1970s, golf carts and electric bikes are the most popular form of transportation.
First things first. While there are abundant options for overnight accommodations (tent camping, sleeping under the stars, a myriad of beautiful boutique hotels and quaint motels that dot the Avalon shore), our family opted to stay at a private two-bedroom, two-bath condo in Hamilton Cove Villas. Located managed by Catalina Island Vacation Rentals, the perfectly
appointed townhome style layout lets you enjoy the privacy of an accommodation away, with more sleeping and living space than a traditional hotel suite. With a master bedroom featuring a private bath, second guest bedroom and sleeper sofa for any extra tagalongs, you’ll be set for a good night’s rest, whenever the evening’s activities come to an end.

Offered by the TripAdvisor top-rated Catalina Island Company, the Catalina Zip Line Eco Tour (visitcatalinaisland.com) is two hours of adrenaline-fueled fun for all ages. After a brief safety session, our family of four boarded a shuttle to a ridgeline platform where we stepped off to zigzag down and across the canyon and through a grove of towering eucalyptus trees on five separate lines at speeds approaching 35 mph. My husband and kids are fearless. I, on the other hand, have to admit to being more than a little trepidatious about the entire experience. I like to think I have a healthy fear of heights. Or more accurately, a healthy fear of falling from great heights. But our
trained guides couldn’t have been more reassuring, knowledgable or fun. As promised, after zipping down the first line, I felt confident enough to enjoy the sweeping ocean views. It was a educational eco-adventure too …at each platform, our guides shared interesting facts about the island’s flora and fauna, which includes 60 species only found on Catalina.
Catalina’s world-famous American Bison is not indigenous to the island, but rather descendants of a small herd left here by a movie crew in the 1920s that bear the distinction of being one of its main attractions (managed by the Catalina Island Conservancy, they now number about 150). We trekked into the heart of Catalina’s rugged wilderness aboard an open-air biofu-

el Hummer on a 4-wheel expedition into the island’s interior to journey through favorite bison grazing grounds. We passed through Middle Ranch, before heading up Cape Canyon to a scenic overlook on Black Jack Mountain. The kids loved bouncing around off road with their heads on a swivel looking out for the majestic animals. Then wound our way back down the original 19th-century stagecoach route back to Avalon.
After our land excursions, we decided to explore the wonders of Lover’s Cove Marine Preserve on the Undersea Expedition. The kids in particular were overjoyed to come face-to-face with Catalina’s abundant marine life aboard the Sea Wolf’s Semi-Submersible as you cruise five feet below the surface in a spacious, climate-controlled cabin. My husband and I enjoyed thick, juicy burgers and herbed fries while the kids dug into buttermilk fried free-range chicken, brined and fried in the a buttermilk batter with romano potatoes and slaw and beer-battered Alaskan cod. The restaurant’s signature prime rib (while it lasts each day) is well-trimmed, aged for flavor, cooked-to-perfection with horseradish and red wine herb jus. Ideally situated on Avalon’s main street (Crescent - aka “Front” Street), diners are afforded spectacular views from the iconic “Casino” building to the the docks where the ferries from the mainland cue up to deliver its passengers at the start of their island adventures or pick them up to bring them back home.

El Galleon’s sister establishment, Toyon Grill (named for the berries found on the island’s coastal sage scrub) also serves up sweeping views of the Harbor, Green Pleasure Pier and Avalon Casino from the vantage point of the island’s “Trailhead” Welcome Center (formerly the Catherine Hotel). Consistent with the Conservancy’s commitment to sustainability, the dishes here are crafted from fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Our family stopped in for a light breakfast (pastries for the kids, avocado toast for me - bacon sunny side up eggs, charred scallion cream and radish and a traditional breakfast sandwich for my husband - fried eggs, cheddar, bacon, avocado on toasted sourdough) and the aromatic fresh brewed coffee that is an absolute necessity to get my morning started.

You would expect to pay a monthly premium for a Medicare drug plan right? And a yearly deductible that needs to be met is generally the “norm” too if you have a “stand-alone” drug plan. (Those who are enrolled in a Medicare Advantage HMO plan don’t have to suffer through a deductible however).
But there is also an “Income Related Monthly Adjustment Amount” (IRMAA) that you’ll pay to Medicare if you make above $87,000 as an individual and $174,000 for a married couple.
Medicare uses the modified adjusted gross income reported on your IRS tax return from 2 years ago. The IRS provides this to Social Security.
There are 5 income brackets that cause a person to pay more for their Medicare Part D (prescription drug) coverage.
If you make above $87,000 - $109,000 or above $174,000$218,000 you’ll pay $12.20 plus your plan premium.
If you make above $109,000 - $136,000 or above $218,000$272,000 you’ll pay $31.50 plus your plan premium.
If you make above $136,000 - $163,000 or above $272,000$326,000 you’ll pay $50.70 plus your plan premium.
If you make above $163,000 – and less than $500,000 or above $326,000- $750,000 you’ll pay
$70.00 plus your plan premium.
If you make $500,000 as an individual or $750,000 as a married couple; you can make any amount higher than that but still pay the same Part D “IRMAA”. You’ll pay $76.40 plus your plan premium.
Surprisingly, these “IRMAA” amounts are actually slightly lower than they were in 2019.
Don’t try to “work the system” by just paying cash or using “GoodRX” to buy your medications. If you don’t have “credible drug coverage” (which means it covers both generic and name brand drugs at a certain copay or co-insurance level). If you go over 63 days without a Medicare Drug plan after your Initial Enrollment period is over (3 months out from your Part B effective date) then you’re accruing a late enrollment penalty. Even if you add coverage the next chance you have (during the Annual Enrollment period) that penalty will be with you for the rest of your life.
The penalty is 1% of the national base premium of a Medicare drug plan (and yes, that goes up every year and so your penalty would then increase every year too) multiplied by the amount of months that you were without Part D or credible drug coverage.
Has the question come to mind about what to do if your income drops because you retire or lose a source of income? If the government bases your “IRMAA” on income reported 2 years earlier, do you need to suffer a higher premium until they catch up with your current income? The answer is “No”. Men, whatever stereotype you have associated with yoga or Pilates, forget about it. Especially the stigma that you are not flexible enough, or that Pilates is for girls.
If anything these are reason to participate in both mindful movements even more. Pilates and yoga was introduced to the western mainstream population via men. These modalities were especially used to strength and rehab soldiers in WWI. And if there is any population in today’s society could benefit from yoga and Pilatesit’s men. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average professional male works 50 or more hours a week. Sorry to say, but this prolonged static activity doesn’t do a body good. The constant sitting, typing, and talking on the phone creates some serious lack of strength, range of motion, and postural deviations in the body. This is where Pilates and yoga come to the rescue, offering no
shortage of benefits for you gentlemen.
Both methods were conceived to increase core strength, overall flexibility, and improve posture. This is achieved in two ways: exercises on various pieces of Pilates equipment, and mat work. Both modes are intended to get a full-body workout in a single session. The equipment can be compared to weight or resis-
tance machines in a gym, but with more oomph. Using springs, pulleys, body weight, gravity, breath, and concentration provide an amazingly thorough workout. Highly focused on balancing the whole body from the core, it helps waken muscles that have gone dormant and allows overworked muscles to chill out. Pilates and yoga can help overcome the dreaded “computer desk syndrome” of rounded shoulders, fatigue, lack of concentration, low back pain, belly fat, and a myriad of other problems that are created when sitting all day.
A career driven male is hardly the only one to who can benefit from such modalities. It also helps athletes perform better. And many male athletes are turning to Pilates for their training. For example, former NBA star point guard turned Nets coach Jason Kidd is a longtime Pilates devotee. He estimates 30 percent of his strength and flexibility training comes from Pilates. “After one session I was energized. From that point on I was convinced it was a great workout, it has made me quicker, more explosive.” Says Kidd.
Also soccer super star David Beckham was introduced to Pilates while on loan at AC Milan. The Italians insisted that all their players had to take up Pilates and yoga to help them with their balance and suppleness. The fitness regime has reduced Becks’ body fat dramatically. When he was asked about Pilates, he said: “I do an hour of Pilates a day. It is fantastic and fitness-wise I am the best I have been for a long time”.
