Dear Marmalade Reader, Do you, like me, occasionally beat yourself up over all that you don’t do for and with your kids? I have to remind myself frequently that I’ll never be able to do enough, and I’ll always wish I had done more; and then I have to aggressively forgive myself and hope that my children will, too.

One thing I know I don’t do enough is make things with them. This issue marks a humble homage to those who are making things, building things, putting things together – and the local outfits that are offering the space and equipment to help those makers along. I hope these few ideas will inspire you to do something new.

And this issue may inspire you to do other things, too. Give it your full attention and you may walk away with a plan to host an international student through Fairmont Homestay (our cover story - p12); you may finally take organizing advice you’ve heard for years (p20); you will be compelled to put that disaster kit together (p46); and you will definitely want to take a weekend trip to the City by the Bay (p24).

EXPERT ADVICE when he wrote the Book of Ecclesiastes stated the concept back in sometime around 940 B.C: Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. (Ecclesiastes 4:9) I really should have just been quoting him all along. But after decades of dealing with the families of deceased clients, I have come to recognize that there is an additional reason to divide the work: someone has just died, and the people left behind need someone to lean on.

You are choosing a college sorority sister, a barracks mate from the Corps, or maybe a brother or sister to raise your child when you are gone. That someone is a great person; the person whom you think is most like you of all your friends, the one most likely to be able to pass the bowl with all the marbles that are your values to your kids.

BETTER THAN ONE LEAVING A POT OF HONEY FOR WHEN GUARDIANS DON’T FEEL LIKE POOH

F

or years I have been trying to help clients understand why it is a good idea to line up good guardians for their children, and to also set up helpers to manage the assets in the estate for those guardians who are bringing up the kids. Since I realize a man who just writes wills and trusts for a living can only seldom be the source of great wisdom, even in small matters, I have always looked to third party sources to support the idea that hard work is made easier by a helping hand.

Then, Gloriosky! In 2010 the University College London (UCL) and the University of Aarhus announced the results of an expensive joint study: “Two Heads Are Better Than One.” Of course, multiple sources paid for this highbrow academic research: the European Union MindBridge Project; the Danish National Research Foundation; the Danish Research Council for Culture and Communication; the Gatsby Charitable Foundation; and the Wellcome Trust.

In other words, it took two major universities, with funding from five foundations, to come up with a conclusion that is not exactly new under the sun. But because it was written in a report produced by two European colleges, and because it cost a ton of money to acknowledge a three thousand-year-old truism, I was able to begin showing the idea to clients with complete confidence. So for the last four years, I’ve been quoting a report as the authority for an idea that is actually older than either of the schools that generated the study. Specifically, Solomon,

That person is taking on a really, really tough job. At my office, we see the pain and the sorrow these unselfish friends cannot show the children whom they are shepherding after Mom and Dad are gone. Their decisions are going to catch some static; why not let them off the hook about the financial questions with a second person to monitor how the cash gets spent – someone to bear a little load for the guardian when needed?

When my father-in-law, a cherished friend over the last five decades, died on the weekend of my birthday last month, my four-year-old granddaughter brought out one of A.A. Milne’s books and opened it to a page that is completely worn on the corners from reading and rereading. She smiled and pointed to the spot on the page that she knew would hit the spot at that moment: “I don’t feel very much like Pooh today,” said Pooh.

“There there,” said Piglet. “I’ll bring you tea and honey until you do.”

In her ageless wisdom, which she inherited from her mom and her grandmother, my granddaughter also had a plastic bear full of honey on the tray that carried the story that I’ve been reading to little kids since the year President Kennedy took office. I read the book once again, and I thought how important it is to have someone around during tough moments to help us through the times we should not be facing alone.

Join me in making sure guardians performing tough jobs have people around them who can carry in the trays when they need to be reminded that two heads are better than one. We shouldn’t need any European colleges to remind us of that, should we? M

Fairmont Homestay

Hosting international students can be an experience of a lifetime

ttending a top 100 university, as defined by U.S. News & World Report, is not only a goal for U.S. students; it’s a goal for many international students as well. To prepare for studying at a notable American university, international families send their young adults to American high schools. The Institute of International Education recently pointed out that the number of international students enrolling in American private high schools with the purpose of obtaining a degree tripled from fall 2004 to 2013, whereas the number of exchange students (students that stay for the maximum of one year on an exchange visa) grew by just 15 percent in the same timeframe.

The rapid growth of the international secondary school population has fueled the growth of a multitude of “homestay” programs, where American families are recruited to host

international students. Hosting an international student can be an extraordinary experience for local families, especially where children are present. It can introduce them to other cultures and social realities that will enrich their worldviews – without ever leaving home.

Typically, a homestay or “placement” company works independently from the school to connect students with host families. It’s an arrangement that can leave challenging gaps. What if the student has issues at school that don’t get addressed and the problem spills over into the home life? What if a host family needs more support than a typical agency is prepared to provide? Who is available at a moment’s notice to offer practical suggestions for keeping family members and international students happy while living under the same roof?

Can a school have a bigger role in making the homestay experience the best it can be for the host family and international students? The staff at Orange County-based Fairmont Private Schools thinks so.

Fairmont Private Schools, founded in 1953, is the oldest and largest non-sectarian private school (preschool through high MARMALADEOC.COM

school) in Orange County, with five campuses in Anaheim and Tustin. The campuses are committed to rigorous academics as well as providing students with community service and character development opportunities. Students also engage in performing arts, sports and other extracurricular programs.

Along with the rest of the nation, Fairmont has seen its international student population grow rapidly… which means a significant need for host families. Fairmont established an entire department dedicated to creating an exceptional living experience for both students and host families. Since 2003, Fairmont Homestay has been connecting their international students with families and supporting all parties along the way.

We visited the Greenler family at their home in Whittier to get a firsthand look at how the dynamic works when a few international young adults are added to the domestic mix. Jeff and Kim Greenler have two daughters of their own, eighthgrader Katie and third-grader Abby. Over the years, they have hosted several Fairmont students. They love the different cultural perspectives the students provide the Greenler girls; the satisfaction of knowing they’re making a positive impact in these young adults’ lives and influencing, for the better, their view of American families. But the Greenler family gets something out of the arrangement, too.

“We love these girls,” says Kim. “They become like family to us.”

This summer, the Greenlers hosted three young ladies, Zhuoyun, Lumin and Yi, all of whom are from China. It’s obvious as we talked with the parents that the Greenler girls enjoyed their guests, who joked and played with them comfortably, even as they were still learning each other’s languages.

The success that the Greenlers have experienced is largely due to the nature of Fairmont Homestay, which from its inception has set itself apart by being of service to both host families and international students. Fairmont Preparatory Academy, where the international students attend, and Fairmont Homestay staff members work to ensure a rewarding experience for the students in both the home and campus.

On the host side, Fairmont Homestay staff members carefully review prospective families. Interviews, background checks and home inspections are conducted to ensure the setting is right for a homestay. Upon approval and consultation, staff members work with host families to make sure the necessary steps are taken to prepare their students for school and life in America.

On the school side, staff members at Fairmont Preparatory Academy help their international students feel at home on campus. They make sure their needs are met while the students become familiar with their new family and school environment.

“Fairmont Prep and Fairmont Homestay work as a team to help each student make a smooth transition,” says Kiki Mendoza, Dean of Students at Fairmont Preparatory Academy. “No problem is too small for us to pay careful attention and work on a solution that helps the student and host family have a mutually enjoyable experience.”

Homestay team working in concert with Fairmont Prep counselors and educators. Andrea Cribbs, Fairmont’s Homestay Programs Manager, spends time educating host parents on what students might be feeling or expecting so hosts can anticipate hurdles. She coordinates with school staff to stay aware of students who need extra attention. Andrea and her colleague Kevin East, who speaks Mandarin after studying in China as an international student himself, help students adapt to their new homes and make themselves available to help host families 24/7 – not a benefit that third party placement agencies typically offer.

“My family has been with Fairmont Homestay for several years,” said Heather Porretta, another long-time homestay participant.

“Being a host parent has definitely broadened my horizons, and I see things from different perspectives. My seven-year-old daughter especially loves having ‘big girls’ visiting our home.”

“Our primary goal is to make hosting easy for host families,” says Andrea. “When host families have the knowledge and logistical support they need, they can focus on being great host parents who welcome young adults into their family, and that’s what makes the experience special for our students.”

Fairmont host families do receive a monthly stipend, but Andrea stresses that Fairmont selects hosts who are in it for the experience, not the money.

“The compensation is provided to give families the means to treat students as one of the family without stressing about the (continued on page 27)

HOW TO PACK AN A+ SCHOOL LUNCH GO FOR THE GRADE IN DENTAL HEALTH

W

ith a new school year starting, how can parents support healthy dental habits while still allowing their kids to savor some of their snack favorites? The answer is in the bag. The brown lunch bag, that is.

At Healthy Smiles for Kids of Orange County, one of the largest nonprofit dental health providers for children, by the end of the summer and the beginning of the school year we see an increase in cavities among our patients and a decrease in the practice of healthy dental habits.

The good news is that parents can prevent the dangers of dental decay by selecting lunch choices that promote good dental hygiene and by teaching children how to make wise food choices on their own – two lessons that add up to healthy teeth and gums all year long.

GET CHILDREN EXCITED ABOUT LUNCH BREAK With an abundance of fresh foods available, brownbagged school lunches can be naturally delicious when they include these recommended items: •

Fun-to-eat crunchy vegetables

•

Low-fructose fruit, such as apples, pears, grapes and strawberries

•

Low-fat yogurt or string cheese

•

Graham crackers

•

Hard-boiled eggs

•

Bite-size sandwiches made with whole-grain bread and chicken

•

Plenty of water to keep hydrated and wash away sugar and acids

WHAT’S IN YOUR LUNCH?

AND DON’T FORGET THE BASICS

Let’s start with foods that children should avoid completely or eat in extreme moderation. For many parents, memories of school lunch fare include making a meal out of French fries and cheese, or trading their lunches for candy and other sweets.

Dental-loving lunches can only go so far in promoting positive oral health. Children can’t slack on the basics of dental hygiene during the school year. This includes brushing their teeth at least twice a day for two minutes and flossing. Reaching milestones during the school year, such as earning a good grade, might be a fun time to give your child a new toothbrush, as toothbrushes wear out every three to four months.

Sugary or starchy foods stimulate the formation of bacteria in the mouth, which causes cavities. These stubborn, sticky foods also erode tooth enamel, creating a prime environment for tooth decay. It’s time we replace these memories with healthier alternatives for this generation of children.

One last tip for parents: The school year always is jammedpacked with activities, so book your child’s appointment now for a dental checkup, which should occur every six months. M

F

estival of Children Foundation is a nonprofit organization with a mission to improve the lives of children by strengthening the charities that serve them. Sandy Segerstrom Daniels, a leading business professional and children’s advocate, saw an opportunity to increase the effectiveness of the work of children’s charities by bringing them together to collaborate. It was this vision that inspired Sandy to found the Festival of Children Foundation in 2003.

You might say that the Festival of Children serves those who serve. They do so by raising awareness and providing financial support, but also by strengthening the network of children’s charities by encouraging collaboration and making connections – and they celebrate those connections every year at the Festival of Children annual event held at South Coast Plaza.

Every weekend this month, families can participate in more than 100 events and learn about child-focused charitable groups that are doing great work in the community. Activities include arts and crafts, singing and dance performances, and more. Visitors can also check out giant fantasy structures made entirely out of canned foods. This September is special because it is National Child Awareness Month (NCAM). NCAM is an effort led by Festival of Children Foundation to focus the attention of our nation on the most critical issues facing children today.

Capistrano Connections Academy • Class of 2016 At age five, Lauren Tomasula rode her first pony and has been riding ever since. She is an active member of the San Juan Capistrano Chapter of the California Dressage Society and has won a number of awards for riding including the San Juan Capistrano Junior Champion for first level and seventh place in the Junior Championships. She has her sights set on qualifying for the Olympics and her most immediate goal is to make the national junior team to help her along that path. In addition to her Olympic dreams, she hopes to one day become a trainer and own her own stable. She plans to continue her education in equine business management to eventually run her own business.

Lauren is also a photography enthusiast and plans to participate in her school’s annual photography contest next year. In addition to pursuing her own passions, she works with younger riders to help them develop in the sport, and in her spare time, she volunteers through her church.

eptember. It’s the time of year when lazy summer days have the potential to flip into chaos. With so much to think about – the new school year, fall soccer and even the looming holiday season – it’s easy for families to get off track and lose focus, as to-do lists grow longer by the minute.

I am sure you have heard many tips on time management and productivity before, but have you actually implemented them? We tend to estimate that setting up a new system will be harder and take longer than it actually does. And we underestimate the lifestyle bliss that a good system will provide.

You could experience days with no lastminute stresses to get lunches packed or running out of clean clothes; clear surfaces throughout your home and office, with no clutter or stacks of mail and paper; and you could be enjoying more precious moments with your kids. Time is everything. Let’s take it back.

Here are six productivity tips that you should not just read about, but really implement for your household this fall:

1. Establish a morning routine

Do you want to feel put together and calm, or rushed and frustrated? When you do the same routine each morning you know what to expect and you get a rhythm to your life that keeps stress low. You shouldn’t have to decide if you are going to have breakfast and what to make; have five to seven breakfast ideas 20 SEPTEMBER 2014

in rotation. You shouldn’t have to decide what to wear when you are still waking up; have it planned the night before. A morning routine can be as simple as the following list – the only trick is consistency: 1. Meditate/Journal 2. Make bed 3. Exercise 4. Get yourself ready 5. Get children ready 6. Family breakfast 7. Launch your day with the most important task first

2. Establish a nighttime routine

You’ve had a rough day, but that doesn’t mean you have to leave the dinner dishes dirty, toys strung throughout the house or the daily mail piling up on the countertop.

Just think about how much better you will feel if you took twenty minutes to straighten up, clear all the surfaces in your home and set out your plan and clothes for the next day. No arguing or negotiating with yourself at night, either. It just gets done.

3. Batch your like tasks together

Batching is both common sense and “strategic procrastination.” You let like tasks build up so you can tackle them in a session. Doing like tasks together gives you momentum and saves you five times the mental effort of refocusing from task switching. You can batch tasks like emails, running errands, health appointments, phone calls and more.

You know all those recipes you’ve been pinning? Pick twenty or thirty of your favorites, or five to seven per week. Make a master weekly shopping list (remember to save this list for future weeks – it’s already done for you). As you bring the items home, wash and prep everything you need for the week’s meals (batching like tasks!). Now each night you will just be throwing the meals together; no stress. Then, just “rinse and repeat” the next week. I promise you won’t get bored if you have five to seven meals, and you’ll save yourself from the “What’s for dinner?” nightly panic.

5. Never set something down “just for now”

Clutter attracts clutter. If you set something down “just for now” you are risking either losing the item because it isn’t in its “home” or you are just causing yourself a big project in the future because soon you won’t be able to see your desktop or bathroom counters under all the clutter. Clear surfaces tend to stay clear.

6. Get help (housekeeping, laundry, errands, etc.)

It doesn’t cost as much as you may think to get help with tasks that take a long time or are unpleasant. Cut out other life-wasting and money-wasting areas like cable TV or going out to dinner just one night less per month. You wouldn’t believe how much support you can get for just under $100 per month! I guarantee you’ll save at least 8 hours per week and enjoy your life more if you just delegate some of your “dirty” work to someone that would be so happy for the job.

I know we are all so exhausted and overwhelmed by the end of the day that it is easy to just grab a glass of wine and collapse in front of the TV or play another round of Candy Crush. You believe that these strategies are what it takes to have a stress-free life and smoothly running household. Now is the time to implement them! here is no such thing as too much Italian food, especially if it’s good Italian food. BRIO Tuscan Grille, now open at the Irvine Spectrum, adds a fresh destination for Italian food lovers from any corner of Orange County.

BRIO is a chef-driven, neighborhood restaurant concept offering a wide variety of dishes including grilled and ovenroasted steaks, fresh fish, made-to-order pastas, bruschettas and flatbreads.

We took the kids to BRIO for dinner and were able to find something delicious for our carnivorous young man, our vegetarian young lady and even our gluten-sensitive girl, so everyone was pleased. As for atmosphere, BRIO’s high ceilings and contemporary rustic décor nicely straddles the line between beautiful and casual, with just enough class to make it feel like you’re out to a nice family dinner without so much high-brow that a you feel out of place bringing the brood.

We tried the Grilled Lamb Chops with Pistachio Mint Pesto, which tasted as good as it sounds, the freshness of the mint subtly lightening up the richness of the lamb. Also on the table were Pasta BRIO (their signature pasta dish, with rigatoni, grilled chicken and seared mushrooms in a roasted red pepper sauce); Campanelle Carbonara (grilled chicken, crisp bacon, parmesan cheese, sauteed spinach and creamy alfredo); and Roasted Vegetable and

SIX SIGNS THAT YOUR CHILD NEEDS A MATH TUTOR

M

any signs reveal whether your child would benefit from extra help in math, both in and out of school. While poor grades in math are the most obvious sign that a student needs help, poor math grades happen for many reasons. Here are six signs (besides low grades) that might indicate that your child wants or needs guidance beyond the classroom.

1

FAILURE TO MASTER ARITHMETIC

Mastery of arithmetic is the ability to confidently provide a correct answer in no more than three or four seconds. Children should master basic addition facts by the end of second grade, and basic multiplication facts by the end of third grade. The most obvious sign of failure to master arithmetic is finger counting. More subtle signs include slow answers, incorrect answers, and lack of confidence in answers. By the time a finger counter figures out what the teacher’s example means, the teacher has moved on perhaps several sentences, and the finger counter may not learn any more math at all that day.

REPEATED CONFIDENCE BEFORE TESTS, BUT POOR RESULTS

The child is able to follow and memorize the steps taught in class and described in the textbook, but the child’s understanding is mechanical. The child can only answer questions just like the examples in the textbook. Test questions often check for understanding by deliberately asking questions that are different in format from the examples in the textbook. Memorized procedures are of no help in answering such a question.

YOUR CHILD SAYS MATH IS BORING

This could signal either of two situations. One possibility is that your child really does find math so easy that they quickly understand each new concept. When this happens, your child will experience the rest of the math lesson as tedious repetition.

Another possibility is that your child has so many “gaps” in their math foundation that they cannot understand the math lesson at all. Sitting quietly through a discussion you cannot understand is certainly boring!

“I AM JUST BAD AT MATH.”

Nobody is “just bad at math.” Some special needs children require the opportunity to learn math at their own pace. But only the most severely challenged children are unable to develop a grasp of grammar school math. A child who claims to be “just bad at math” is seeking a way out of a situation that they cannot cope with. Children often have such large gaps in their prior math education that they cannot comprehend the math lessons they are forced to sit through in class.

A SEEMINGLY SUDDEN OR RAPID FALL IN MATH GRADES

It is not uncommon for a student who has always gotten A’s in math to suddenly have to struggle for C’s, and quickly find him or herself in danger of an F. The sources of the students’ difficulty are usually “gaps” in their earlier math education. Most students miss a few important math concepts here and there.

Teachers have little time to discover these “gaps” and fill them in. Children are amazingly inventive about finding ways to work around their gaps. But working around gaps gets harder and harder over time. At some point, a gap gets too wide to work around, and grades suddenly begin to drop.

RESISTANCE TO MATH HOMEWORK

Many families face a nightly battle about math homework. The children hate the work, and resist doing it, often to the point of tears and tantrums.

Gaps in a math education start out as small problems, but grow over time and have a long-lasting effect on a child’s performance in math. It is critical that parents watch for signs of trouble in school so that appropriate actions can be taken to get help.

Help with math outside of school usually involves the services of either a private tutor or a learning center. A tutor is good for short-term problems involving current class work and preparation for the next test. Learning centers are a good choice if the need is more comprehensive, either for remediation or enrichment.

When you find a tutor or learning center that genuinely meets your child’s math needs and facilitates his or her learning, establish a long-term relationship with that tutor or learning center. PACKING IN THE FAMILY FUN in SAN FRANCISCO

A

s the summer wound down to its final days before the crazy chaos that was sure to descend upon our household with the start of the new school year, our family of four decided to coordinate a couple of fun days away.

With two young children (ages 6 and 7) in tow, my husband and I were looking for a locale no longer than about an hour away by plane, with plenty of outdoor activities and indoor recreation, a temperate climate and family-friendly eateries. And it needed to be someplace ideally easy to get around in - on foot and via public transportation (so the grown-ups could spend less time behind the wheel and more time enjoying the environment).

The City by the Bay more than fit the bill.

San Francisco is a manageable size – about six square miles – and although parking can be highly problematic, the ease of access and ability to navigate the city’s public transportation system made it totally possible to pack in plenty of sightseeing and “playing tourist.”

Locals are used to San Francisco’s somewhat wacky weather, which is influenced by microclimates (temperatures can vary by fifteen degrees from one neighborhood to another) and by the “intermittent fog” that rolls in most days to provide postcardperfect atmospheric photo ops of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Summer here tends to be downright unsummery. September and October are the warmest months. If you travel here during any other time of year, pack plenty of layers and be prepared to don and shed them several times a day.

Water surrounds San Francisco on three sides, so there’s no need to worry about getting lost. Just remember: Downtown is east. The Golden Gate Bridge is north.

If you’re going to be doing a lot of sightseeing, consider purchasing the San Francisco CityPASS, which includes entry into five major attractions (including a seven-day Muni & Cable Car passport, Blue & Gold Fleet Bay Cruise, Exploratorium, Aquarium of the Bay and the California Academy of Sciences) for a flat fee ($86/adult, $64/child ages 5-11). Another benefit: You can go to the head of the lines (think of the time savings during high tourist season). If you’re planning on getting around on streetcars and cable cars and visiting at least three of the seven sites that are included, there’s no better bargain.

GETTING

around

Cable cars aren’t the fastest way to get from A to B, but riding these open, historic trolleys is a quintessential San Francisco experience and a pretty big bang for your entertainment buck from a kids’ perspective. There are 17 cars currently in service on three lines – we hopped on the Powell-Hyde line which starts at the corner of Powell and Market streets, rolls through Nob Hill and Russian Hill, and winds its way down to a turntable at Victorian Square in front of Aquatic Park, near Ghirardelli Square. If you’re looking for a quicker way to get around, there are six streetcar lines, designated J through N, running underground downtown and above ground on the streets in the outer neighborhoods.

Because the following were located in the same general area, we were able to experience several attractions in a single day (other than looking at the sea lions, which was free – admission to each are included in the San Francisco CityPass): Fisherman’s Wharf/Pier 39: If you’ve never been here, you might not believe it: Hundreds, literally hundreds, of fat, lazy - extremely noisy - sea lions lounging on the docks ... in other words, a really fun (and free) place to bring the kids.

(Beach Street & the Embarcadero): Blue & Gold Fleet Bay Cruise: Extremely popular 350-passenger sightseeing boats depart for a one-hour narrated cruise several times each day. The itinerary is a wide loop of the bay, motoring right under the Golden Gate Bridge, then past Sausalito and Angel Island, and finally around Alcatraz. Morning cruises are typically less crowded than those in the afternoon. (Pier 39 at Fisherman’s Wharf) Aquarium of the Bay: Perfect for younger kids, this small aquarium is the ideal way to while away an hour or two - ride the moving sidewalk or walk through a clear plastic tunnel right underneath San Francisco Bay for a close-up view of the marine creatures who live there-sharks, eels, rays, and lots of fish. Back at the surface, kids can visit three touch pools and get up-close and personal with small sharks, bat rays and sea stars.

Very knowledgeable guides are available to answer all their questions. (Pier 39) The Exploratorium: This hands-on museum is like one enormous, extremely interesting science fair. There are hundreds of exhibits here -from super-bubble blowing to a tornado machine to a computer that lets you fingerpaint and immensely popular Tactile Dome, where you navigate in total darkness using every sense except sight. Stop by the gift store for all sorts of great brainy games and toys.

Since our first day was filled with indoor activities, we opted for outdoor endeavors on Day Two: Golden Gate Park: This 1,000-acre park stretches from the Pacific Ocean to the Haight and has something for everyone tennis, jogging, biking, fishing, basketball, archery or a picnic lunch. One beloved tradition for San Franciscan kids is going boating on man-made Stow Lake. At the boathouse (50 Stow Lake Dr.) you can rent pedalboats and rowboats. The boathouse also rents bicycles, including quadcycles that are great for families. The city’s most famous park is also home to an amazing “Children’s Playground” featuring “the best swingset in the city,” plenty of fun climbing equipment, a lovely carousel, and loads of sand and grass.

Coit Tower: Perched atop historic Telegraph Hill in North Beach, this round, stone tower sits atop Telegraph Hill and offers great views of the city (it’s free to get into the city-owned monument, but if you want to check out the scenery from the very top, it’s $7 for adults and $2 for kids aged 5–12). Into art?

Commissioned by the federal Works Progress Administration, the murals that adorn the inside of the tower – painted by more than 25 artists in the late 1920s and early 30s - were completed in 1933 and are great fun to look at.

(Telegraph Hill Boulevard) Ferry Plaza Farmer’s Market: If you’re in town on a Tuesday (10 am - 2 pm) or Saturday (8 am - 2 pm), this is a fun stop for local color and awesome fresh food. Hundreds of stalls are manned by local farmers and gourmet purveyors of all things yummy, which makes it a great place to pick up exotic non-perishables that you can’t find back home.

Our kids loved being able to pop in pretty much anytime during the day for a quick bite (or in the case of breakfast, a full meal) during the food and beverage presentations (Club Breakfast, Light Snack, Hors d’ourvres, Evening Desserts) – showcasing regional specialties made with locally sourced ingredients, whole fruit and freshly baked cookies. For their parents, the lounge was the perfect place to unwind at the end of the day with a glass of wine, champagne or made-to-order cocktails paired with artisan cheeses and cured meats and a farm-fresh casual menu.

Aside from its cosmetic beauty and picturesque location, this 100+ year-old architectural gem is convenient to everything you’d want to experience in San Francisco. And for our family, it boasted the added bonus of being a regular stop on the California Street Cable Car Line – just minutes away from Union Square and Fisherman’s Wharf and within super easy walking distance to Chinatown, which the kids loved to explore.

In the spirit of discovery, the hotel and its staff – through the Ritz Kids Program – encourages children (ages 4 -12) to explore the property on a scavenger hunt focused water, land, culture and environmental responsibility. Prior to arrival, a Guest Relations agent contacted us to learn about our kids – their names, ages, any allergies, needs and preferences – to customize their stay.

Of the latter, the Cioppino is a tomatobased seafood stew brimming with fresh fish, mussels, clams, shrimp and crab served over pasta while the another popular pick is the Jambalaya combines smoked pork, clams, mussels, shrimp and chicken simmered in a Creole sauce and served over Cajun rice.

My entree was decided the minute I saw the “Garlic Roasted Whole Dungeness Crab” on the menu. Two of my favorite flavors – garlic and crab – in one dish? Done.

It was a little messy eating, but wonderfully delicious and totally worth the work.

here’s a movement happening. You may have participated without even knowing it.

Are you a “Maker?”

WHO ARE THEY?

It’s pretty simple: a Maker is a person who makes things. It’s really an umbrella term for independent tinkerers. They are do-it-yourself enthusiasts. They are hobbyists and dabblers.

They are people who make things for fun. While these people sometimes turn their “making” into businesses, the idea of making generally stays at the homegrown level.

WHAT DO THEY MAKE?

Anything and everything! The maker mindset stretches across all areas, covering everything from robotics to fiber arts. While the whole Maker movement really started with a tech-related base, it has really grown into a field that includes just about everything one can make—modified bicycles, up-cycled items, even handcrafted cheese.

THE FORCES BEHIND THE MOVEMENT

The whole maker revolution has evolved purely out of the interests of those who make or fix things. It’s innately human to want to make things with our hands, to build and to fix, and to see our efforts manifested. It wasn’t too long ago that we fixed things ourselves and were more self-sufficient than we are today, having to always call in an outside source to make or repair something.

It seems the last couple generations have become removed from this broad, general knowledge of equally broad and general subject matter. Families knew how to do minor repairs on cars, home appliances, household plumbing. They also had a working knowledge of sewing, gardening, and canning foods.

We moved from a more self-sufficient household to a more consumption-based household.

“I think deep down people are makers, and they want to be or feel self-sufficient,” says Bequi Howarth, show producer of the OC Mini Makers Faire. “The enthusiasm that people are showing for the Maker Movement shows that.”

In 2006, Dale Dougherty launched the first official Maker Faire in San Mateo, CA. This past June, the White House held its own maker faire for the first time ever. The maker phenomenon has spread across six of the seven continents, and has attracted the attention and support of major companies like Disney, Google, Home Depot, Intel, Ford, Radio Shack and others.

It’s innately human to want to make things with our hands, to build and to fix, and to see our efforts manifested.

MAKING VS. CRAFTING

All crafters are makers, but not all makers are crafters. Though the line may be thin, there is in fact a difference between making and crafting. Making is simultaneously included in artistic endeavors and set apart from them. “Not that making can’t be considered artistic and vice versa,” Howarth assures.

Can making be considered artistic? Absolutely, and it even leads people to the construction of a new definition of “art.” Making goes beyond the stereotypical idea of art—drawings, paintings, sculptures, etc.—and finds artistic value in not only the way something appears, but also in the way something functions.

You may not hang robotic circuitry over the mantel in the living room, but there’s something beautiful to be said for the artistic ingenuity in its design.

“Artists are makers, too!” says Howarth. “And so are crafters, and beekeepers, and people who modify cars. Most of all, anyone can do art or be artful by being a maker.”

THE MAKERS IN ORANGE COUNTY

Orange County has also jumped on the maker bandwagon. We have our own OC Mini Maker Faire, which has garnered local support from AirWolf 3D Printers, Edtric, and the Beall Center at the Claire Trevor School of the Arts, located on the UCI campus.

The Beall Center hosted the OC Mini Maker Faire in 2012 and 2013. “We will be back in the spring of 2015,” promises Howarth, after a faire hiatus for 2014.

The hiatus has allowed for the OC Mini Maker team to strengthen, restructure, and gather new and additional support from the Orange County business community, the county’s school districts, and, of course, its most prized participants—the makers.

PARENTS + KIDS = A MAKING EXTRAVAGANZA!

There are lots of opportunities for the whole maker family. Since making has no limitations on age, parents are joining their kids—and kids are joining their parents—on the tinkering fun.

While we patiently wait for our maker faire to come back around, the first-ever Inland Empire Mini Maker Faire will be held on October 4, 2014 in Riverside. San Diego will hold its secondever faire again this coming spring.

But aside from the Mini Maker Faire, Orange County now has three maker spaces that offer classes and provide tools: Edtric and Urban Workshop, both located in Irvine, and the newly opened OC Maker Space in Huntington Beach. If you’re venturing outside the county, check out LA MakerSpace in Los Angeles, MakerPlace in San Diego, and Vocademy in Riverside.

Local making groups include the OC Hacker Scouts and any 4-H group, with more making groups forming often.

Where can you find project ideas? MAKE Magazine is packed with projects for makers of all skill levels, and every summer MAKE hosts the free Maker Camp on Google+. There are also websites like Instructables.com where you can find a variety of projects for any maker level.

The ideas are plenty, the tools are available, and the makers are ready. So how about it? Let’s get to making! M

Hang it from a tree, mount it to a fence, or place it on the top of a pole in the center of your yard and you’ll have a pair of nesting birds in no time. Paint your birdhouse to give it extra durability for rainy days.

Take the Laser Cutting and Etching class at Urban Workshop: Get familiar with the laser system at Urban Workshop – you don’t have to be a member to take this 2.5-hour class!

Select the Bird Home file and let the laser do the work: At Urban Workshop the Epilog Laser System computer houses the bird_home.cdr file, which contains all the necessary pieces for your bird home, so be sure to click the combined mode button in the driver window. (We used a 35-watt Mini 24 with the following settings: 40% speed, 100% power for engraving and 7% speed, 100% power, 500 frequency for cutting.) Note: If you want a colored bird home, paint the wood the desired color before putting it into the laser system.

Glue the pieces together: Follow the above color-coded illustration to piece together the bird home using your wood glue.

These toy drums, for example, use mostly common household items to make a fun toy that the whole family can enjoy!

MATERIALS NEEDED * Empty soup can or small round * 1 Latex balloon * 2 wooden dowels or chopsticks

TO MAKE THE DRUM: 1.

Measure the height and diameter of your soup can or small, round gift box and use the dimensions to cut out a piece of scrapbook paper that will cover the outside of the vessel. Make sure to leave room for a small overlapping seam.

Once completely dry, rough up the paint a bit with sandpaper to give the jars that distressed-rustic look, as well as to let the light shine through once you put the candle in.

Apply glue to the back of the wrap and adhere to the outside of the vessel.

4.

Snip off the bottom half of a regular latex balloon.

5.

Stretch the balloon open and place over the top of the vessel. Secure by placing a rubber band over the top of the drum.

MASON JAR LANTERNS

With the crazy push towards rustic-chic in the last few years, it is very possible you have a few lidded mason jars hanging around! If you don’t, you can still make this project for under $15.

MAKE IT:

MATERIALS NEEDED

1.

Cover the outside of the glass with a coating of paint, and let it dry completely; it should take about 15 minutes. (This is the part where the kiddos might get antsy!)

2.

Once completely dry, rough up the paint a bit with sandpaper to give the jars that distressed-rustic look, as well as to let the light shine through once you put the candle in.

3.

Coat the outside of the jar with a thin layer of Outdoor Mod Podge. Don’t worry, it dries clear!

4.

While the Mod Podge is drying, tie the twine in two knots on either side of the Mason jar lid. When the jar is dry, screw the lid on with the twine. It will make a loop so you can hang the lantern – an easy way to create that warm summertime glow.

5.

Drop a tea light or battery operated candle in and enjoy!

At every single birthday party I can remember attending between third and seventh grade, we played and played and played until we were tangled in a hysterical pile, laughing till our sides hurt. For about $20, you can create a simple game of Lawn Twister that will keep the kids in giggles for the whole night!

MATERIALS NEEDED * (4) Cans Rust Oleum Marking Paint – red,

yellow, green, blue (about $5/ea. at Home Depot)

* Cardboard box * Cardboard or foam core board to use as a stencil

* Twine * Twister game spinner (optional)

I started by jimmy-rigging a compass, (see photo) tracing the outline of a circle in the foam core board, and cutting it out to use as a stencil through which I could spray the marking paint on the lawn. (Adults, you may want to do this part, as you will probably need an Xacto knife, or scissors to do the trick.)

Once you’ve got your stencil, set a line of twine down on the lawn to act as a ruler to keep your four rows of dots in as straight a line as possible.

3.

Set the stencil on the lawn, and the cardboard box over it to contain any excess spray. Spray one row of colors at a time; red, blue, green and yellow. 6 dots each, 4 lines total.

If you already have the indoor version of Twister, simply use the spinner to call out directions to the kiddos. (Right hand blue!

Left foot green!) If not, you can just call out instructions to get them as twisted as possible.

isasters can strike at any time, and the American Red Cross serving Orange County encourages everyone to get prepared during National Preparedness Month in September by creating an emergency plan that will help keep everyone calm and safe during times of disaster. Here are tips and to-dos so you don’t have to figure it all out yourself.

REDUCING FEAR IN UNCERTAIN CIRCUMSTANCES Disasters often strike quickly and without warning. They are frightening for adults, and can be traumatic for children, especially if they don’t know what to do.

During a disaster, your family may have to leave your home and depart from your daily routine. Children may become anxious, confused, or frightened. It is important to give children guidance that will help them reduce their fears.

CHILDREN AND THEIR RESPONSE TO DISASTER Children depend on daily routines. They wake up, eat breakfast, go to school, and play with friends. When emergencies or disasters interrupt this routine, many children may become anxious.

In a disaster, they’ll look to you and other adults for help. How you react to an emergency gives them clues on how to act. If you react with alarm, your child may become more scared. They see your fear as proof that the danger is real. If you seem overcome with a sense of loss, your child may feel their losses more strongly.

Children’s fears may also arise from their imagination, and you should take these feelings seriously. A child who feels afraid is afraid. Your words and actions can provide reassurance. When talking with your child, be sure to present a realistic picture that is both honest and manageable.

DO MORE THAN CROSS YOUR FINGERS Your family is prepared for the little everyday emergencies, but would you be ready if a disaster struck close to home?

It’s easy to prepare your family for the unexpected and get your family up to speed with three simple steps:

Feelings of fear are healthy and natural for both adults and children. But as an adult, you need to keep control of the situation. When you’re sure that danger has passed, concentrate on your child’s emotional needs by asking the child what’s uppermost in his or her mind.

Having children participate in the family’s recovery activities will help them feel that their life will soon return to “normal.” Your response during this time may have a lasting impact.

Get a kit Put together an emergency preparedness kit that includes food; water (at least 1 gallon per person, per day); extra cash; a first aid kit; a flashlight; a radio; a multipurpose tool; medications and medical items; copies of personal documents; a cell phone with chargers; a map of the area; an emergency blanket; emergency numbers; sanitation supplies and other essential items.

Make a plan Develop a plan for family communication in the event of an emergency. Agree on evacuation routes so everyone knows what to do and where to go.
