First Day of School A

re you ready for the first day of school? The first day of school is a big deal for kids and parents. Getting back into a school routine can be tough, especially for children who start at a new school. We’ve put together a few essential tips for the first day of school so you and your child can have a successful start to the school year.

VISIT THE SCHOOL OR GO TO AN OPEN HOUSE

Preparation is the best way to minimize first-day jitters and stress. Before the school year starts, take your child to an open house, orientation, or a tour of the school. Perhaps even ask to shadow a class. This is particularly helpful if your child is starting at a new school. By visiting the building beforehand, your child can familiarize herself or himself with the schedule and routine, which may boost confidence and help the transition seem less scary.

PREP EVERYTHING THE NIGHT BEFORE

The morning of the first day of school should be as calm as possible, so taking the time to prep the night before will help make the morning routine run smoothly. You can prepare things such as:

When you prepare everything ahead of time, you’ll also have a chance to catch any last-minute tasks that you might have missed leading up to the first day.

GET A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP AND WAKE UP EARLY

That goes for you and your child! It’s pretty common to let bedtime lapse over the summer, especially when the days are much longer. Ideally, you should start gradually adjusting sleep and wake schedules about two weeks before school starts. That way, getting to bed on time is already a habit, and the night before school starts, your child will be good to go.

On the big day, encourage your child to wake up early, which will help them to acclimate to the new routine and leave room in case something unexpected arises. Plus, your child can get to school a little bit earlier, alleviating stress for you and your child (especially navigating through traffic during drop-off)!

EAT A HEALTHY BREAKFAST

No matter how excited or nervous your child might be, it is important that they don’t skip breakfast. Having a healthy breakfast can help kids better regulate their appetite and avoid common illnesses. Getting breakfast ready is another reason why waking up early on the first day is a good

idea. However, that doesn’t mean preparing breakfast needs to be a long ordeal. You can prep breakfast foods the night before or bake batches of food like breakfast muffins to cut down on time.

BE MINDFUL OF HOW YOUR CHILD IS FEELING

As a parent, you may be focused on getting your child’s things ready or being on time. That’s totally normal.

However, don’t forget to be mindful of how he or she is feeling. Your child may feel anxious, excited, scared, or stressed. Try to remain calm; if you act stressed, your child will pick up on it. Focus on the positive and let your child talk about their fears or worries if they need to. Remind them that these feelings are common and okay to have, and that you’ll be there when the school day is over.

Beyond her beauty, Cleopatra was educated to be pharaoh and was adept at the art of negotiation. She overcame all obstacles in her devotion to maintaining the country of Egypt. Her well-known liaisons with both Mark Anthony and Julius Cesar of Rome, Cleopatra made use of her intellect, charm, sensual prowess and diplomatic abilities to keep the Romans from invading Egypt. Elizabeth Cady Stanton (1850-1902) Born in a time when women could not own property and were actually considered the property of their husbands or fathers, Elizabeth Cady Stanton was both an abolitionist and was passionate about women’s suffrage. She established a movement of such strength and determination for the rights of women that the call was taken up in many European countries as well. As a mentor to Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady 2 -2.-81 (-:3$-"$ '$+/$# 2. "0$ 2$ 1.,$ of the laws that we have today.

Anne Frank (1929-1945) Hidden in a home to avoid the German forces, Anne kept a diary of what it was like to go through the experience. The young Jewish girl painted a picture of life during those days of the Holocaust.

The gripping tale, expressed in a diary became one of the most widely read books around the world. Her death in a concentration camp made the horrors more real and is used in the hopes that nothing like that will ever be repeated in history.

Known for her strength, Gandhi was responsible for some of the changes to the constitution of India which are in place today. BY ANN LAURENCE In the tween and teen years, it’s mission critical to instill confidence in our young, impressionable girls. How can you help raise your daughter to have high selfesteem, self worth and confidence?

Teenage girls today are likely more challenged to maintain a positive selfesteem than when their moms were their age. Our society and the media set such high (and often unapproachable) standards on girls to be “perfect” and to “fit in.”

“Self esteem and happiness are not directly related to praise and awards,” says Kelly Klaus, a licensed marriage and family therapist based in San Juan Capistrano. “Self-esteem is felt with a sense of value that was honestly earned from effort of the child. ‘You are so smart,’ is very different from ‘you studied so hard to earn that grade.’”

If we praise them for the outcome, we put the emphasis on the place they arrived rather than the effort. Our daughters learn that if they are not first or win, it’s not worth the effort. It is so important to allow our daughters the gift and experience to fail at something so they appreciate their own ability to rise above the failure and feel in control.”

Massage for Your Teenager?

Bodywork Can Ease Adolescent Angst PROVIDED BY MICHELLE BRYANT

While teens may be less likely than their parents to go to a massage therapist, there are plenty of reasons why this age group should be encouraged to give it a try.

T

he benefits of massage are well documented, among them relief of muscle tension, lowered stress hormones, increased sense of relaxation, improved immune function, and even a heightened ability to concentrate, according to studies conducted by the Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami School of Medicine. But for teenagers, there's an additional payback.

The teenage body is in the midst of transformation -- exponential growth and development in a rapid period of time. On the physical side, teens may be at increased risk for aches, pains, and injury. Many teens strain their bodies with competitive sports, get erratic sleep, and consume a less-than-optimal diet. Massage can help muscles recover from overuse,

and help balance the body and maintain that stability.

Perhaps even more crucial, teen massage can help improve body image and sleep patterns, and contribute to decreased depression, anxiety, and stress. This keeps a teen connected to her body, even as it morphs in confounding ways. "Many teens are self-conscious, and not happy with their bodies," says Eeris Kallil, massage therapist and shiatsu instructor at the Boulder College of Massage Therapy, in Colorado.

"Massage can help teens stay grounded." Bodywork has also been

reported to help mediate eating disorders, a growing concern among teens.

Another potential plus: A beneficial, therapeutic relationship can develop between bodyworkers and teenagers during the years when adolescents need adult confidantes, but keep parents at a distance.

The practitioner can become a supportive, trusted adult in a teen's life. And the session itself, according to Kallil, can be a way to deal with all the physical and emotional turmoil of this tender age.

W

hen running through the list of activities we wanted to introduce to our then-little ones as they grew, my husband and I placed water safety and swimming at the top of our list for our son and daughter – way above dance class, soccer practice and piano lessons.

So, when we found Evolution Swim in Mission Viejo several years ago, we were hooked. Swimming lessons, particularly for small children, aren’t just for mastering strokes with a goal of winning future swim meets. Learning to swim is a choice that is both smart and safe.

Water is all around us. Pools, spas, rivers, lakes and the ocean can be aquatic playgrounds, or they can be potentially dangerous. Beyond the obvious safety reasons, learning to swim can promote health and wellness for people of all ages, according to Felipe Delgado, founder of the Mission Viejo-based Evolution Swim Academy.

Research is on his side. According to a study from the Griffith Institute for Educational Research in Australia, children who learned to swim at an early age were ahead of their peers in many developmental milestones, including oral expression, literacy, math and

Swimming has been a part of Felipe’s life since he was very young. Growing up, his parents moved to Mission Viejo so that he and his brothers could swim for a world-renowned swim program. The move paid off. Through hard work and sacrifice, Felipe earned a sports scholarship to Arizona State University where he had the honor of being recognized as a 15x All-American. Internationally, he competed in multiple world championship swim meets and participated in 2 Olympic Games (Atlanta & Sydney).

I don’t know that I’ve ever uttered the phrase “it all started with a guinea pig.” Certainly, this is the first time I have ever personally written the phrase. But I’m more than tickled by the notion that a whirlwind of events which has started the former owner of ZOOMARS iconic San Juan Capistrano petting zoo down the path of adventure was with, you guessed it: a guinea pig. Not just any guinea pig.

Gillie Guinea Pig. Carolyn Franks, couldn’t stop smiling before. Now, I’m betting it would take an incredible feat to curb her enthusiasm.

Former owner, you ask? The success of Carolyn’s first book has opened the door to an unimaginable adventure - one that has been 15 years in the making since she first envisioned an innocent, affordable family entertainment opportunity. A petting zoo named ZOOMARS in the historic Los Rios District of San Juan Capistrano resulted, and is the stuff of history now. A “backyard barnyard” from the start, the zoo buildings date back to the 1800’s, and its property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Home to a vast number of creatures and critters alike, the llamas, ponies, goats, sheep, bunnies and of course, guinea pigs will soon be in the caring hands of local developer Dan Almquist whose own children and wife Lindsey are longtime friends and fans of the beloved zoo. And, most importantly, who wish to keep it, enrich it, and bolster its already sterling reputation for years to come.

Almquist will be one of only a handful of owners of the property in two centuries. The land was once part of the Mission, then a Mexican ranch owned by the Rios family, then the Nieblas family (both relatives of the native inhabitants, the Acjachemen), then granted to Delfina Olivares, the town matriarch. In 1980, Gil and Millie Jones bought the parcel and opened the Jones Family Mini Farm.

Gil served as a two-term mayor. They sold the property to Carolyn when they retired in 2005.

“Like me,” Carolyn notes, “the original Jones Family would only sell the petting zoo to someone who would promise to keep it a zoo. I believe that after 15 years, I have taken ZOOMARS as far as I can on my own. I see how much Dan Almquist and his company Frontier Development, truly care about historic restoration and preservation in San Juan and they have the investors and the construction know-how to revitalize old buildings. It’s great to showcase these 1800s structures for all to enjoy, but no one realizes the enormous amount of money it takes to preserve and continuously repair them. Dan’s

projects in town inspire growth and yet are in keeping with our old town charm. There is no one I trust more than Dan to pass the torch to.”

As a former San Juan Mayor, Gil Jones also supports Dan’s vision for growth in town and his approval was also important to Carolyn. “I wanted to make sure I had Gil and Millie’s blessing before selling and called to ask them for it before I approached Dan. I told them I knew he would keep their ‘farm’ alive and that it would be in good hands. The property was never listed for sale as I only approached Dan privately.”

The property holds four listings on the National Register of Historic Places - the Olivares House, the Owner’s Cottage, the San Juan Springs Bathhouse and River Street, which Dan purchased 50% of when he bought the Ito Nursery next door a few years ago.

“Dan has a proposed project on the nursery site (pending City Council approval on July 2nd), which was

another reason I felt he was the ideal person to approach,” says Carolyn.

“Should the River Street Marketplace be voted in, the petting zoo would be incorporated into their plan, constructed in a California craftsman design.” The project can be viewed at riverstreetsjc.com.

HOLLYWOOD CALLS Carolyn, in the meantime, will be taking Gillie straight to Hollywood.

For as it turns out, her literary agent loved Gillie and his friends so much, she suggested an animated series for television, which Carolyn is in the process of writing now. With preliminary interest from a few studios already, due to its uniqueness, the show would be based on many of Carolyn’s real-life stories at ZOOMARS intertwined with an imaginary place called GUINEAPIGVILLE. It would also incorporate two original soundtracks

“I lost everything I owned to keep the zoo afloat after the economic crash in 2008, and a divorce in 2009. Thankfully, a local San Juanian and close friend lent me an inordinate amount of money to keep things going and I struggled for every dollar to pay her back. My bookkeeper would run to the bank at 4:45 to ensure every check would clear. Through years of tough times, using creative ideas to promote business, countless Groupon deals, free pop-up petting zoos, a summer camp, and even a disastrous dino extinction; the stars aligned.”

A mom who’d taken her daughter to ZOOMARS had illustrated a kid’s book, and wanted Carolyn to see it.

“I couldn’t type fast enough: ‘Can you draw a guinea pig?’” The rest

Illustration by Michele G. Dodds is a 32-page masterpiece. All 5,000 books sold within a few months, Gillie won a prestigious award, and after 15 years, Carolyn feels like passing the ZOOMARS torch is the best possible gift to her community.

Gillie, meanwhile, is getting ready to load into a vintage Airstream Motorhome, which Carolyn always dreamed of owning and recently just purchased, and start doing shows locally. The series, called “Go Gillie Go!” is set to follow Gillie and his friends (the ones he met in the book at Mr. Parker’s Pet Shop) as they do pop-up shows around the country benefiting animals in need. “I can’t tell you all

the juicy details about Gillie’s Roadshow, or Sheriff Gillie will arrest me, but I can tell you that his Airstream holds a ‘secret’ that takes him and his friends on some wild rides,” Carolyn says with a smile. “And maybe … we’ll even meet Juan the Dinosaur again.”

“My heart will always be here with my animals. I’m staying on before, during and after the sale to serve as a consultant, cheerleader and guinea-pig

petter. It’s in the contract! Dan and I both want the transition to be seamless for our ZOOMARS community.

Those familiar staff faces, like Nina, Gerald and Angel the emu, who have been with me from the beginning, will still be here.” And all the allure of ZOOMARS will continue to come with parties, pony rides, bunnies, goats, sheep, bunnies and chickens. And of course, their signature 100 guinea pigs!

And to think, it began with one. As Carolyn likes to say “ A n y t h i n g ’s possible with love and a carrot stick.”

What’s the most important thing to keep in mind when choosing a dance class? It’s that research has proven that dance provides physical, developmental, artistic, and academic benefits to your child.

hysical Benefits - Students build muscle strength while increasing flexibility. Young dancers develop a sense of balance and improve agility and coordination. Importantly, children also develop body awareness and learn correct posture. y entire experience with North Carolina up until a few months ago consisted of a vague knowledge of the sports teams the state boasts: Carolina Panthers, Charlotte Hornets, Charlotte Checkers, the Hounds, the NASCAR Cup races, and its Hall of Fame. That all changed when our family fell head over heels for Charlotte on a recent trip to cross the North Carolina off our “50 States List.” Headquarters to Wells Fargo, the city is the third-largest financial center in the United States. And to be sure, the city is chock full of bankable moments.

Nicknamed the Queen City, the city of Charlotte was honored with the moniker of the German princess Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, who was head consort of Great Britain (and therefore Ireland); those

among the first to establish a township in the region after the Catawba Native Americans population diminished. Nationally recognized for their interactive youth-centric activities, the Children’s Theatre and the Great Wolf Lodge are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the long list of “to-do’s” for long family-friendly weekend vacay. There are extroverts and introverts. There are loud personalities and reserved ones. Those who love dinner in with a few friends, or a real lollapalooza with everyone they know. The common ground between both types?

“At the center of all good gatherings is the sense of celebration,” notes Candy Hirte, owner of Costa Mesa’s Where’s The Party? store.

Candy knows her way around a celebration. In business since 1990, she and a cadre of incredible ladies have been making every occasion special for their customers with everything from invites to home decor. “Customer service comes first, but that’s pretty simple when we all love the

idea of celebrating every holiday.”

Well, except that I do lo-ve parties.” Quickly growing to love chatting with each and every customer who walked in the doors, Candy soon realized that on a very personal level, the business was about the personal friendships she was developing, and the small and large moments that made up each

ne of my favorite things about Salt Lake City is its abundance of trees. In fact, the University of Utah campus, on the bench of the city’s foothills, is a designated State Arboretum, with over 8,000 trees.

Boasting 300 plus varieties, including almost 40 different types of conifer, the city, and the campus in particular are an incredible sight in the early days of spring as the beech, elm, oak, and Japanese flowering cherry trees begin to bloom.

It is said that you can experience all four seasons in a day, and that is certainly true if you’re planning on venturing up any of the myriad canyons that flank Salt Lake’s downtown sprawl. Sun in the morning and snow in the afternoon (winter into late spring) makes for beautiful days exploring all that the city has to offer: bookstores like The King’s English with its incredible storytime workshops; classic diners like Ruth’s with plates for the kids and biscuits as big as your head; or the gorgeous City

Creek Center, with over 100 stores and eateries in a walkable open air floor plan. The Hogle Zoo’s Wildlife Connections give parents and kids alike one-of-a-kind animal experiences with interactive feedings. An events calendar that is positively bursting at the seams has activities for everyone: from Tot Tuesdays and Wild Wednesdays to Behind the Scenes Tours.

Historic Temple Square tops the list of “must see” sights when in Salt Lake City. Home to the global headquarters of The Jesus Christ Church of Latter-day Saints (popularly known as Mormons), the 35-acre property contains more than 15 attractions, including the impressive Salt Lake City Temple (which took 40 years to build from1853 - 1893) and is one of the oldest attractions in the area, the Tabernacle - home to the world-renowned Tabernacle Choir, beautiful gardens, art exhibits in the Church History Museum and the Salt Lake City Temple.

Completed in 1867, the Tabernacle is one of the most “acoustically sound and architecturally awe-inspiring

buildings on earth.” Brigham Young directed the building should be designed so people could see and hear the speaker without impediment. To do this successfully, bridge-building techniques used to construct the roof so that support pillars were not necessary. Every Thursday evening from 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm, the Tabernacle Choir rehearsals are open to the public to view at no cost. Monday through Friday at 12 pm, visitors can enjoy a 30-minute organ recital by Tabernacle organists and guest organists.

Built in 1854, the Beehive House was home to Brigham Young (Utah’s first governor) and later other Church leaders. The large representation of a beehive on top of the structure symbolizes the strong sense of community and diligent work ethic of the Latter-day Saints who settled in Salt Lake City.

n a day in age when most ten yearolds have their own cell phone, and are, at many schools, required to have their own laptop, the demand for true literacy is faltering; and therefore incredibly precious. So what are parents to do prior to age 10, when game apps and screen time take over, and many children’s love of books and reading falls by the wayside?

Tracey Pringle likes to think that instilling a love of literacy early on is the best way to develop lifelong achievers, and is betting her livelihood on it. With Club Literacy, Mrs. Pringle has turned a typical education center into a nurturing environment in which all children are encouraged and guided to reach their creative and academic potential.

Dedicated to the development of lifelong readers, Club Literacy was

born out of two Bachelors degrees, one in Speech Communication, one in Early Education - and eight successful years in the trenches of public school, teaching Kindergarten through Fourth grade.

“My proudest moments have been seeing my own children develop a strong love of literature,” says Tracey.

“I’m a literacy advocate, through and through.”

Credentialed in both California and North Carolina, Tracey also travels internationally to research effective educational techniques. Offering both specialty summer classes and a full lineup for the fall, Club Literacy is gearing up for another reading year.

“We start with the basics - we’ll meet those ABC’s any way we can!”

ABC Club, for ages 4-5 introduces to club members through fun and exciting books, fairy tales, fables, poems, and parodies. Students enjoy

Specially designed for full and halfday kindergartners, Kindergarten Smart Start and Early Literacy both explore further the ideas and shapes of the ABC’s, building the foundation of reading readiness. Beyond simple recognition and sound links, students are provided with the opportunity to engage in cooking experiments, themed dress-ups, phonics games, creative dramatics, and even collaborate with the rest of the class to publish a class book.

According to a 2013 study from the U.S. Department of Education, approximately 32 million adults in the United States can’t read. Stopping that trend before it starts, with tender, loving encouragement is a priceless gift, and Tracey and her team are proud to send students home with a wide variety of tools to succeed.

Kids progress through 123-ABC Math Journals and Book Bunch, where trueto-life mathematical situations are provided to explore and investigate.

With reading, as with mathematics, the sooner a child can demonstrate their reasoning and illustrate their thinking, the stronger their confidence will be later on in school.

chance to work through them, we reinforce phonic skills, and basic word sight recognition. Simultaneously, writing skills are strengthened!”

As a mom whose elementary-aged daughter has attended Camp Literacy’s summer camps and reading classes, I can personally attest to the fact that while what Tracey provides is a focused learning experience, she does so in an environment of fun and creativity - my daughter absolutely LOVES everything about being a part of the Club Literacy “family,” from the camaraderie and encouragement to the educational activities.

Tracey, a 2010 recipient of the WomanSage Award for her work in Child Development, loves nothing more than getting buddies together and working towards success and her Book Bunch is exactly that. “Their collective goal is to become great readers and writers, and by placing an emphasis on phonic skills and word recognition, students exploration of the worlds of pirates, mermaids, and sea monsters becomes an opportunity, not just a magic story hour.”

And before you know it - that child who would rather look at their smartphone will be saying the three little words every parent wants to hear (not “Mom, more dessert”).

s adults we understand exercise is an important part of our health and well-being. Unfortunately our understanding does nothing for school budgets that are forced to cut physical education from curriculums. An addition, the over reliance on technology is truly placing kids motionless in front of screens for hours at a time. This lack of exercise in our youth is creating a steady decline in physical health, and a rise in self-confidence issues. YIKES! Thus, creating the inspiration behind Align’s Teen and Kid Core program. The heart of the program is based on the principles of Pilates and yoga, to inspire and teach children about compassion for one’s self, and others. All the while being a fun, inviting, and positive environment.

Regular movement and exercise will help counter the current negative trends of self-confidence and health issues.

difference: Be consistent, exact discipline appropriate to the infraction and show your children that you love them even when they are behaving badly.

Be fair and firm When it comes to disciplining a child, there are as many methods as there are parents and children. Which you choose is up to you. But for our part, my husband and I try to always be mindful that each child is different and so is each infraction and as such, the punishment should fit the crime. For instance, we will not discipline our child who has lied to us in the same way we would a child who didn’t do his chores.

As I write this, I am thinking of one poor mom (let’s call her Sarah) whose daughter, Kaitlin (her name is also changed) was in my son’s first grade class.

I

n the early part of the school year, her 6-year-old was often openly defiant and disobedient during play dates, after school at the park and even at drop off and pick up – so much so that other moms started steering their kids away from her daughter lest her bad behavior rub off on their little ones.

Sarah told me that in spite of her best efforts to control her behavior, her daughter responded by being even more willful and stubborn. But by the time

spring rolled around, Kaitlin seemed to be much better behaved and Sarah far less stressed. I wondered if her daughter had simply outgrown the bad behavior or if there was more to the story. So at the next play date, I asked Sarah what had changed.

Her mom said another mother with three willful children of her own had shared her experiences of dealing with “out of control” children and the simple child-rearing advice that made all the

Parents should address their child’s negative behavior as soon as it happens.

Ignoring the behavior sends the message that there are no consequences to their actions. In order to affect change, you have to stop and address their out-ofcontrol behavior right away – every time.

You might think that will mean that your child will constantly be in “time out” or forever lose privileges, but as Sarah discovered, the more often she corrected her daughter and remained consistent, the less frequently Kaitlin needed to be disciplined.

With consistency and discipline, remember that the single most important aspect of changing your child’s behavior is showing them that you love them unconditionally – even in the throes of negative behavior. It’s work and it takes time, but you’ll be rewarded with a more obedient, respectful child.
