Investing in the Future
by Ken Earwood
Parents generally don’t have to be convinced of the value of a college education for their children Studies show that college graduates not only earn more but are healthier, more satisfied with their jobs, and more likely to remain employed during tough economic times 1
But paying for college becomes more challenging every year. Over the last decade, undergraduate in-state tuition and fees at four-year public colleges and universities rose at a 5 6% average annual rate above the rate of general inflation For the 2011–12 academic year, the average cost of tuition, fees, room, and board reached $17,131 2
Private institutions are even more expensive, although their costs are rising at a somewhat slower pace. For the 2011–12 academic year, the average cost for tuition, fees, room, and board was $38,589 at nonprofit four-year colleges and universities 3
A Tax-Advantaged Savings Plan
As with saving for retirement, the key to saving for a college education is to develop a strategy and make regular contributions One helpful savings vehicle is a Section 529 plan a state-sponsored or college-sponsored program designed to help families save for future highereducation costs. Each plan has its own rules and restrictions, which can change at any time
The money in a 529 savings plan accumulates on a tax-deferred basis and can be withdrawn free of federal income tax as long as it is used for qualified education expenses at accredited post-secondary schools, such as colleges, universities, community colleges, and certain technical schools Qualified expenses include tuition, fees, room and board, books, and other supplies Section 529 plans feature high contribution limits (set by each state), and there are no income restrictions for donors
As with other investments, there are generally fees and expenses associated with participation in a 529 savings plan. There is also the risk that the investments may lose money or not perform well enough to cover college costs as anticipated The tax implications of a 529 plan should be discussed with your legal and/or tax advisors because they can vary significantly from state to state Most states offer their own 529 programs, which may provide advantages and benefits exclusively for their residents and taxpayers
A college education could be an important investment in the future. If you anticipate paying for college, you might develop your savings strategy sooner rather than later
I bet you never thought you’d be reading a magazine article when you realized you’ve been banking with the wrong people But think about it: Why are you at your current financial institution? What have they done for you lately? In fact, I’m willing to bet you had no idea that your financial institution should be working for you.

Trusted, Tried and True: United American Mortgage
by Heather Evans
Trusted, tried and true. That’s the reason why Irvine’s United American Mortgage has been successful for over 20 years. Since 1993, UAMC specializes in providing mortgage-financing solutions to homeowners and homebuyers.
You’re almost tired of reading about it but it’s true: the mortgage meltdown hurt more than a few and people are still trying to recover. It’s hard to know whom to trust. With many mor tgage companies competing and failing, UAMC has found itself expanding into 9 states Originally formed to provide for the specific needs of Southern California borrowers seeking mor tgage products tailored for them, UAMC has made it their personalized business to get to know and help you
And since so many of these mortgage companies are failing, what is UAMC doing different? “What it boils down to is that we’ve grown substantially because we have the ability to adapt to the ever-changing marketplace,” says UAMC President Al W Hensling “We are in the home business, the helping-people business. Yes, it requires us to at times work around the clock. Yes, we have to keep up-to-date on the latest products and regulations. We take our clients and what we do seriously because at the end of the day, everyone should either be in the home of their dreams or keep the one they love so much. To some people, it’s just paperwork and numbers. But to us, it’s personal. It’s home,” he continues.
say we just want to help how we can Since our business is referral based, we truly get to know your family and friends.
UAMC continues to evolve with new products and financing solutions to the ever-changing Southern California real estate market While many have given up the idea of owning a home or even refinancing, UAMC holds to the knowledge that today’s new and innovative programs are making it easier than ever to purchase or refinance “The ‘Mor tgage Meltdown’ created a great deal of uncertainty in the marketplace and made it difficult for so many to secure financing. We understand that a lot of people are scared to see where they stand and that’s ok. We just want you to know that it doesn’t have to be this way. Most of our clients feel the same way. Some people tell us they didn’t even want to find out about their options in the first place because they didn’t understand the jargon Well, we aren’t the company that just explains things once We’re with you step by step, no matter what,” Al adds
Want to put your toe in the water? Visit their website: www uamco com to view their mortgage calculators to get a head-start You can also apply online, get a custom quote and read more about the loan programs they offer If you’ve never had a loan before, consider their handy ‘Loan Process’ tool They take you step-bystep through what you can expect when applying for and receiving a loan.
“If you’re considering anything in our sector then consider us the right team for the job,” Al says “Call us, visit us online, or stop by the office anytime We’re always on standby to see how we can help you. Don’t let the mortgage meltdown of yesterday affect where you’re at today. We’ve got the cutting edge techniques and knowledge to help your unique situation. We’re ready to meet your challenges and assist you into getting or keeping your home!”
Their incredibly impressive, rare, referral-only business model may also be the key to understanding their success, as customers flock just to see if UAMC truly walks the walk To them, offering you efficient, cost-effect and timely service is just a day’s business These days, most companies feel the need to plaster those words all over their advertisements UAMC doesn’t need to express that they go above and beyond, they just think that it should come standard “I guess you could United American Mortgage Company is located at 19782 MacArthur Blvd #250 Ir vine, CA 92612. Got Muscle?
by Paul and Carolyn Fetters
One of the keys to losing body fat and keeping it off is strength training Lean muscle is the driving force behind your metabolism The only way to increase your metabolism and burn more calories at rest, is to increase lean muscle through strength training.
Most people want to get lean and shed body fat Doesn't a high metabolism sound like something that might help you achieve that goal? You bet it does
For the women that are afraid to get "too bulky" from strength training rest assured, that is simply a myth.
Women do not and cannot naturally produce as much testosterone (the main hormone responsible for increasing muscle size) as men therefore, it is impossible for a woman to gain huge amounts of muscle mass by merely touching some weights
Unfortunately, the image that may come to your mind is that of professional female bodybuilders Most of these women, unfortunately, use synthetic means in order to achieve that high degree of muscularity. In addition, most also have amazingly good genetics along with an unbelievable work ethic that enables them to gain muscle quickly when they spend hours in the gym lifting very heavy weights Believe me when I say that they do not look like that by accident
Okay, back to why it’s important to increase your lean muscle The more lean muscle mass you have, the less fat you will have. The reason for this is that muscle actually burns fat. Muscle helps the body burn calories for hours after a workout. Studies have shown people who lift weights have an even lower fat mass percentage than those who do aerobic exercise alone.
Muscle Builds Strength
Most people don' t stop to consider that the more strength you have, the less likely you may be to get injured If you are an avid runner, cyclist or swimmer it might make sense to lift some weights so your body is stronger and can perform longer and more efficiently without getting injured
Improve Func tional Strength
Another benefit you achieve by increasing muscle is functional strength capabilities. Since you get much stronger by lifting weights, everyday activities will get much easier over time You won' t need to call your brother to move a couch anymore, or even have your son carry your suitcase.
Muscle Reshapes The Body
What if you just dropped fifty pounds from dieting and nightly jogging through your neighborhood but when you look in the mirror things still jiggle and you still carry weight in the same spots? The best way to change this is to shape your body through building muscle This will tighten, firm, tone and target those trouble spots that you just can't seem to get rid of
Muscle Fights Disease
The highest number of women who get osteoporosis in later years are ones of slim build Doctors say that one of the best ways to fight this debilitating bone loss is to do weightbearing activities, that increase bone density. Muscle has also been shown in major studies to fight the onset of type two diabetes, build the hear t muscle to fight heart disease and even help those who suffer from arthritis to be more symptom free.
Do not fear muscle any longer What you should fear is being old and weak Push your body - you are stronger than you think If you want that complete body transformation to the point where your family hardly recognizes you, then you have to sit up and change, right now Take action and start lifting weights

Minimally Invasive Urology… The Gold Standard of Care
by Robert Pugach, MD
At Pacific Coast Urology Medical Center, minimally invasive procedures are at the heart of our practice Since 1998, I have dedicated my practice to utilizing advanced “minimally invasive” techniques to treat a wide range of urological conditions such as, prostate cancer, benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH), bladder control disorders, vasectomy, vasectomy reversal, to name just a few.
I’m often asked about the benefits of minimally invasive urological procedures. As demonstrated in my practice, minimally invasive procedures are an excellent choice for many patients with specific problems that previously required invasive surgical procedures. The primary benefits are:
■ Less pain and discomfort ■ Reduced blood loss
■ Smaller (or no) incisions ■ Focus on in-office and outpatient procedures
■ Shorter recovery time ■ Faster return to work and daily activities
■ Fewer complications and less risk than older surgical procedures
Most importantly, studies and experience demonstrate that patients’ clinical outcomes with minimally invasive technologies are equal if not better than for those who undergo traditional surgery!
At Pacific Coast Urology Medical Center, we offer the following minimally invasive technologies: ■ Cryoablation: An outpatient procedure to treat prostate cancer and some kidney cancers. This procedure uses sub-freezing temperature to destroy cancer cells
■ High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU): The newest technology used to treat prostate cancer HIFU employs ultrasound energy to heat and destroy targeted areas of prostate tissue while passing through the prostate’s healthy tissue without causing damage to it. I am one of only a few
urologists in the US trained and skilled in using HIFU.
■ CoolWave Thermotherapy and TUNA (Trans Urethral Needle Ablation): Single in- office treatments using either microwave or radiofrequency energy to decrease the size of a man’s prostate This remarkable, 30 minute office treatment for benign prostate growth (BPH) can replace more invasive surgical procedures The result is to eliminate or greatly reduce the symptoms of BPH for 5-15 years It is two to three times as effective as medication without its side effects .
■ Endoscopic Surger y: A procedure utilizing a tiny video camera (endoscope) and other equipment to operate on urinary stones, bladder cancer and other urological cancers The procedure requires a very small incision in the skin, and a camera is used to view and operate on the specified organs
■ Neuromodulation Systems (PTNS): The first FDA approved acupuncture treatment for bladder control! Leaking bladders can be stopped after only 12 in-office treatments and regular maintenance visits
■ No Needle No Scalpel Vasectomy: An elective procedure that couples often select when their family is complete Vasectomy is one of the safest and most effective types of birth control Unlike female tubal ligation, a No Needle No Scalpel Vasectomy doesn’t involve hospitalization and takes only 15 minutes to perform in my office No stitches are required and patients can often return to normal activities in 48 hours
At Pacific Coast Urology Medical Center we pride ourselves on working with each patient and finding the best individualized treatment. Combining early diagnosis with less invasive treatment options is beneficial to patients and is clearly the wave of the future. We’re proud to be a leader in the field.

The Training Spot
“Live as if anything is possible”
by Heather Evans
Meet Paul and Carolyn Fetters, owners of Huntington Beach's premier fitness center called The Training Spot. Known for specialization in personal training, boot camps and nutrition. They are celebrating 15 successful, healthy years of helping others become the best version of themselves How did they do it?
“Our goal in business has always been to help as many people as possible with the knowledge of a healthy lifestyle and to inspire others into action,” says Carolyn, former competitive cyclist and crew rower at UCLA “The success of our company has benefited from our personal values of being resultsdriven, being open to continually learn and grow, plus always delivering a great experience through exceptional services,” she adds
that anyone can change and improve their physical being regardless of their background, family history or even genetic makeup ”
Because they are a family run business, it allows them to be creative and adventurous with services, creating an atmosphere of success to support their members. Their nutrition programs are also nationally recognized for success at weight loss and education “One other aspect that sets us apart is we have a talented nutritionist on staff,” says Paul “Many studios don’t offer this necessary element ”
They are also home to The TakeDown ChallengeTM, a 28day nutrition program to give people a "jump-start" toward a healthy lifestyle “Most people approach it as a weight-loss jump start, but it’s also an opportunity for people to learn about proper nutrition and how it applies to them as an individual,” says Carolyn. “Not everyone wants to lose weight, but most everyone wants to learn how to eat to obtain better health, energy, quality of life, sleep, and fitness Just knowing what and how to eat gives everyone confidence, whether they're in the grocery store, their kitchen, or even a restaurant.”
But how does it work?
Carolyn and Paul feel that far too many people needlessly struggle with weight loss and fitness because they try to do it alone “There is no substitute for having expert guidance and a program designed specifically for you by a fitness professional with the accountability and support to see it through,” says Paul, one of the original personal trainers at Gold’s Gym in Venice Beach and competitive body builder.
The Fetters’ opened their first family-owned and operated exercise studio, specializing in private and semi-private personal training and nutrition at their dual locations in Huntington Beach “Healthy living is a lifestyle choice for us,” says Carolyn “I come from a family history of heart disease and obesity, so I have to work really hard to maintain my weight and level of fitness, but I’m living proof
“Clients are offered weekly weigh-ins and food/exercise journal checks with our Nutrition Technicians, along with weekly boot camp classes, group power walks, Sunday group hikes in locations around OC, weekly menus, recipes, grocery lists, and individual portion sheets that per tain to each recipe to help them reach their goal It's a non-stop 28 days of get fit and healthy living in a group setting!” Carolyn adds “The camaraderie and support that naturally develops is amazing to witness! We now typically have up to 150 par ticipants and cap it off at that number; as people know about our program now and encourage their family and friends to join them for the TDC! We offer it three times a year, changing the menus and recipes to capture the season s bounty of the freshest produce No two TDC's are ever the same and that keeps it fresh and fun for all!”
“At the end of the challenge we have a huge celebration party hosted at Mama's on 39 Restaurant,” says Paul. “Throughout the TDC, Mama's will feature selected recipes and cater to each person's individual por tion amounts
We then offer a Nutrition Seminar for our participants to teach them about how to progress to continue on their path of living a healthier lifestyle We explain what they just accomplished in just
Paul and Carolyn Fetters with their children - from (L): Daisy, Katy, Mattison and Sara
28 days and more about nutrition so that they better comprehend the impor tance of their decisions when consuming food. Our ultimate goal is to teach them enough about proper nutrition that they can take care of themselves and perhaps their amily for the rest of their ives.
We really want people to take control of themselves and make informed choices verses guessing ”
“Honestly, though- some people will not be ready to move on in just 28 days,” says Carolyn “We have our original nutrition program, called TakeDown LifeStyle This program is more comprehensive and allows them an opportunity to meet with our nutritionist on a bi-weekly basis for more support and guidance as she guides them until they feel totally confident with their nutrition path At this point Mama's will continue to offer bi-weekly recipes, of my choosing, to give people a place to go out to eat, while still staying within their proper parameters of portion control. Our motto is: ‘there are no bad foods, only bad portion sizes.’ Once people get y so much freedom “
Speaking of nutrition, their programs are expanding throughout the U S and Canada, and they will be adding a 3rd gym by 2014 to support
their growing influence in Orange County At the end of the day, it’s all about feeling good to look good “Whatever the ideal body is for you, you can’t look at exercise or eating well as a chore,” says Carolyn. “It really comes down to quality of life. We only get one chance and one body ”
n addition to being great trainers, Paul and Carolyn are amazing people. Happily married, they enjoy spending ime together, and as Paul puts it, “livng our dream lifestyle ” Carolyn loves unning and has calculated that she’s ut enough miles down to circumfernce the earth!
heir website: www.tspot.org is a otbed for information about how you an get started looking like and experincing ultimate health They are down-ear th, understanding people who now exactly what it can take to get arted and get motivated. They prome that once you begin their program, e support will be there The Training ot isn’t just a place to transform your dy, it will help you to transform the y you feel from head to toe
y change at any point in their lives. It’s just a matter of deciding you want to do it Nobody can want it for you and ANYTHING is better than nothing You don’t have to be a runner, you don’t have to be a competitive athlete Just do something for you that makes you happy- ride a bike, dance, or skate Just decide ”
The Image Center: Celebrating Ten Amazing Years By Giving Back!
by Heather Evans
What do you get when you cross an amazing husband and wife dental/plastic surgery team with an exceptionally talented staff? Simple: What Dr Katherine Ahn and Dr Peter Newen have created at The Image Center! Located in Huntington Beach, The Image Center is the only comprehensive plastic surgery, dentistry, spa, and wellness center in Orange County, and they have been beautifying residents since July 2003. How are they celebrating this decade of success? By offering an onslaught of new and exciting services and products!
Dr. Newen is launching his new, highly anticipated advanced skincare line
called ‘NewenSkin ’ He also created ‘NewenLift,’ an innovative facial rejuvenation procedure utilizing the latest advanced growth factor technology He has been invited to speak at prestigious conferences and has won
several awards for his extraordinary surgical results. “We plan to offer educational courses to teach other doctors these innovative techniques at The Image Center in the near future,” Dr. Newen says.
New to The Image Center team is Dr John Rezaei, who specializes in Implant Dentistry and Prosthodontics, to help patients reconstruct their
mouth and bite with cutting-edge methods. As for Dr. Ahn, she was recently certified in Myofuctional Therapy to help patients improve their airway, bite, and smile naturally “By combining this technique with advanced orthodontics, we can help improve the quality of life dramatically for both children and adults,” Dr. Ahn tells us. Other important services offered include safe mercury filling removal, sleep apnea/snoring therapy/devices and one day crowns
“We’ve recently also launched ‘NewenWellness’ and its signature program ‘OLAH’ (Optimal Lifestyle And Health) at The Image Center,” Dr Ahn comments “Through the OLAH Program, we teach clients about the importance of a healthy lifestyle and how to prepare delicious plant-based meals. We believe that looking and feeling great really does begin from the inside Improving your outside appearance without working on your internal health cannot result in true beauty and wellness,” she continues.
With all of these new changes, it’s easy to see why The Image Center has grown to be so successful Dr Ahn is dedicated to giving back to the community, and is very proud to announce OC Cares, a non-profit organization she founded, which promotes unity, charity, and compassion “OC Cares held its 1st Annual Benefit Gala in May 2013 to raise funds for 3 charities, Dr Riba’s Health Club, Giving Children Hope, and The Joyful Child Foundation. We hosted a concer t that featured professional singers and local young talents” says Dr Ahn
Rather than The Image Center celebrating their 10 year anniversary for the sake of celebrating, they decided to support their community and those in need by joining forces with OC Cares to host their “Make Life Beautiful” event on August 18, 2013 to help raise funds for these three organizations and the W.I.N. (Women In Need) Foundation. Guests were treated to a fabulous dinner, salsa dancing, and a presentation by Dr Patricia Riba from Dr Riba’s Health Club, who gave a talk on “Secrets to Obtaining Wellness For The Whole Family.”

Other places have a six-month to one-year warranty. I honor any coupons from a competitor, but I insist on using factory-made par ts. We use very high-quality parts and give very high-quality service What can I say? We have an old-fashioned way of doing things We treat customers with respect by handling all of their needs!”

Death and Taxes
by Donald A. Hunsburger, Esq.
Will Rogers once said that the only difference between death and taxes is that death doesn't get worse every time Congress meets At the risk of contradicting an American icon, in some cases, Congress has allowed Death Taxes to get better, rather than worse
Ever since President Ronald Reagan signed the landmark Kemp-Roth Tax Cut (popularly known as the Economic Recovery Tax Act of 1981) into law, families have employed a common practice in their estate plans: The A-B Trust. This trust design allowed moms and dads to save their kids a bushel full of estate taxes by dividing the family treasure at the first death into one share for each parent, basically making sure that many estates that would otherwise have been taxed could go to the next generation without any payment to the government
When planners first began using the split involved with A-B Trusts, the “exemption” or “estate tax free” size of an estate was only $225,000. This meant that by using the A-B split, a couple could pass $450,000 to their children without additional tax planning- a fact that clearly pushed most people to the point of establishing a trust with this “divided house” approach; many people had estates larger than that amount and needed not only to maximize the benefits of their exemptions, they needed to employ other planning techniques as well to avoid taxes at death
By 1987, the tax exempt amount of an estate had risen to $600,000, which combined for a couple at $1.2 million, so that most Californians who owned any real estate still needed to “double down” on their trust plans to keep estate taxes at bay. Over the years the value of our estates which could pass to our beneficiaries without taxes continued to rise, until the year 2011, when the tax free estate level rose to $5 million, or $10 million for a couple
For a couple with combined assets less than $5 25 million (the 2013 “Tax-Free” amount), there is a real need to consult their planning counsel. Simply put, while the benefits of having a “split” done on the estate of a family which has assets above $5.25 million at the first death are still significant, couples with assets unlikely to reach or surpass that amount should reconsider having the automatic or mandatory split built into their trusts Why? Simple– the process of dividing the estate at the first death is indispensable if there is a tax benefit (Since Estate Tax rates have floated between
35% and 65% since 1982) to be gained from the split, yet a family whose assets do not reach that amount may have no tax benefit from dividing an estate at the first death
If the couple’s estate amount is within the tax free levels (less than $5 25 million in 2013), they should think seriously about whether they desire to split their estate at the first death Unless there is a nontax reason for the split, such as earmarking the first-dying spouse’s estate among the children of multiple marriages, the initial fees for the split should make most couples reconsider what they want their trusts to require at the first death.
These costs and extra work at the first death include asset appraisals, accounting, legal work, the ongoing costs for separate income tax returns for the deceased spouse’s “B” trust, along with ongoing accounting issues and unnecessary restrictions on the survivor’s access to funds in the “B” trust All these issues combine to make many people hope to avoid the division if there is not a tax motive for it at the time of the first death.
In spite of all these concerns, most planners still advise caution in dealing with the changes in a couple’s estate plan Some planners recommend leaving an option to elect at the first death not to divide the estate at the first death This approach makes sense if the trust also includes language allowing the surviving spouse to take advantage of the deceased spouse’s exemption amount later on. This optional process is called “Portability,” and it makes it possible at the first death for the survivor to elect not to do a division of the trust at that time, but instead for the survivor to file an estate tax return at the first death and claim the deceased spouse’s exemption amount (his or her $5 25 million tax free amount) for later use in the surviving spouse’s tax planning

You are taking everything you know for granted if you’ve never experienced the absolute horror of a plumbing problem People who’ve been through the ‘black sink sludge,’ or the ‘rising toilet tsunami’ recall it as though they’ve been through a war
The Unclogged Truth: Crandall’s Plumbing
by Heather Evans
I recently clogged the sink after deciding it made sense to put thick fettucine sauce and carnitas down the garbage disposal (Don’t judge me! I’m from Idaho and we feed slop like this to our pigs I’ve never had a disposal before) I took the disposal and pipes apart, dumped a respectively judgmental amount of Draino down the sink and tried to clear the line. Nothing. And that’s when the heavens opened and Crandall’s Plumbing saved me
I knew I could trust them from their impeccable Yelp reviews When a small husband and wife business has been thriving since 2009, you know they’re doing something right. The service was quick, clean, professional and affordable. (Although I did learn that Draino should never be used as a poor man’s plumber).
It says quite a bit about a business when most of their employees belong to the original team Sam and Erica Crandall are the kind of people you wish to do business with, but hardly ever come across They founded their company on a dream of dedication, hardwork, teamwork and education Combine this with Sam’s commitment to fairness, honesty and availibity to your needs, it’s easy to feel valued as a customer. Specialing in all aspects of plumbing, they provide service for commercial and residential OC and LA counties They’ve even recently expanded to a 15 person team “We are excited to grow our commercial aspect and expand our hydro-jet services Our focus has and will continue to be the drive to educate ourselves and our clients We strive to gain repeat business and value the referrals we receive,” says Sam
Erica adds. “As Huntington Beach small business owners and residents, we understand the importance to support each other by shopping local and to keep our community strong Please feel free to contact us with any of your plumbing needs or questions We’re here for you!”

(Son of Sam & Erika Crandall)
in spite of all these concerns, most planners still advise caution in dealing with the changes in a couple’s estate plan. Some planners recommend leaving an option to elect at the first death not to divide the estate at the first death. This approach makes sense if the trust also includes language allowing the surviving spouse to take advantage of the deceased spouse’s exemption amount later on
What does this amount mean for couples? Basically, the question of whether to cause a trust to include a division of assets at the first death is an issue which is, in some cases, a matter that involves more than just tax or financial issues For example, two couples, each with an estate of exactly $5.25 million at the time of doing their trusts could come to different conclusions about whether to require a split of the estate at the first death or whether to simply allow the surviving spouse to make an election at the first death whether or not to divide the estate
The first couple might be young, with each in work areas where they expect the estate to grow significantly every year. This husband and wife might be concerned that an early death of one spouse after the estate has grown even just slightly might give the surviving spouse too much oppor tunity to share an estate with a future spouse, perhaps to the detriment of the couple’s children This concern has motivated many spouses over the years to require a split of the trust at the first death even when the estate tax could be avoided without dividing the estate in two.
Another couple with the same size estate might be more advanced in age and might have little concern for growth of their estate since their assets are focused on income producing investments for their retirement These two might also share a goal of keeping the post retirement, post first-death costs down for the surviving spouse. This, along with the concern of avoiding administrative costs for the surviving spouse, might allow them to decide to allow the surviving spouse to file an Estate Tax Return at the first death, which elects to claim the deceased spouse’s Estate Tax Exemption for use later on These older couples often know that which ever one survives, the primary concern will be for the trust assets to go to the couple’s children, so that post first death control issues seem less relevant in the decision making process.
Another five or ten couples of similarly sized estates might come to even different conclusions about how to adjust their trusts in light of the increase in the Estate Tax Exemption amounts This is because the issues which each estate needs to consider will change from one household to the next for reasons completely unrelated to the tax dollar limits involved, such as concerns for special needs family members, grandchildren issues, and a host of other concerns Families of larger and smaller means also need to revisit their trusts because the tax free estate numbers have shifted the consequences of trust language which has not kept up with the changes in the tax law.
One thing is true for all families who have trusts: the failure to examine your estate distribution language now can cause your families to endure problems later that could be removed with simple document changes that would allow the use of improved provisions of Estate Tax Law.
SPOTLIGHT ON
Heritage-Dilday Memorial Services
by Rob Bryant
The funeral industry has been morphing into a kinder, gentler provider right before our very closed eyes Without generating much media attention, what might be considered the second-oldest profession has been developing dollar-saving, eye-opening options to ease the cost and pain of dying for the living
Like the tree that falls in an unpopulated forest, however, you can’t hear the impact it’s making if you aren’t listening The lack of awareness begs the question: why do we consumers spend so little of our life preparing for our ultimate departure from it?
Cer tainly, most of us have the time The life expectancy for normal, healthy males in the U S is well into our 70s and for women several years longer Surely there is ample opportunity in that span to visit community funeral directors to learn, as ever Boy Scout does, the advantages of being prepared. In this case; building a wish list and comparison-shopping prior to purchasing funeral arrangements.
Cesar Gutierrez, managing partner at Heritage-Dilday Memorial Services in Huntington Beach, believes consumer awareness has not kept pace with the progress in his industry Although very active in community events and chamber meetings he advocates that the best way to educate and update consumers is with pre-need discussions where there are no deadlines and expenses can be evaluated without emotional interference
Public misconceptions about funeral services
In Gutierrez’ experience, which spans more than two decades, the fault lies with two common pubic misconceptions. First is that funeral directors are mired in a no-frills profession; and therefore everything can be handled on an as-needed basis
The stalled economy, however, has caused Gutierrez, and other leaders in the business to become more marketing-oriented “While the tradi-
tional service will always be available,” Gutierrez explained, “we look to provide our families with value-added services that will earn us their trust and business now and in the future ”
The second incorrect assumption is that mortuaries have high product markups In reality, reputable mortuaries have fixed prices that are the same, whether at-need or pre-need services are being discussed Such transparency has been common practice for almost two decades
“Very few unscrupulous practitioners have survived the scrutiny from within or outside our profession,” Gutierrez advises. “We all recognize the advantages of long-term relationships and that’s what we are establishing in our community and business outreach programs ”
Time and money dictate service options
Families dealing with funeral arrange-ments at the time of need, typically have only a short time to plan and implement a service within the usual death-to burial or cremation-cycle. And these decisions are most often made based on the funds available at the time, which may not be ideal
Taking a pre-need approach seems to eliminate those twin common drawbacks. Each member of the family can make their own wishes known and a financial plan can be developed that schedules payment of a number of years in today’s dollar value.
The obvious savings come in ordering only what you agree you want in the more rational environment of a pre-need conference; and to shop that list around to the various funeral homes for the best price and service.
Value begins with venue
Value could start with the venue For example, Heritage has a chapel that seats 70 to provide more intimacy for a smaller service; and the Dilday chapel, located just north on Beach Blvd , can accommodate groups of up to 175 and has a reception center to host a catered event afterwards.
Other options are available by thinking outside the box with a progressive funeral director Depending on dates and budget, Gutierrez encourages a memorial service that reflects the decedent’s interests For example, it’s not uncommon for his Huntington Beach families to opt for services at the loved one’s country club or a favorite local beach.
Next comes customization Personalized services (planned in advance) help to dispel the notion that funerals are necessarily cookiecutter events
Gutierrez reasons that if every option is presented to every family every time, no two services, be they cremation or conventional burial, have to be alike.
“We feel a memorial service is about the living as well as the loved one being remembered,” he emphasizes “Families want closure that can only be captured by saying ‘good-bye’ in their unique time, language and fashion. We’re always looking for new and better ways to accomplish that.”
Founded in 2001, Heritage Memorial Services was under the ownership of Dennis and Linda Gallagher Decatur and Linda Dilday, and his brother R Burr Dilday founded Dilday Brothers Funeral Directors in 1968. The two merged in 2011.

Testosterone Therapy: The Key to Male Health and Vitality
by Robert G. Pugach, MD
It is important to note that a man’s testosterone levels decline by 1 to 3% every year and that they can experience symptoms of Low T as early as 30 years of age! By age 45 almost 40% of men have Low T levels, yet remarkably, only 5% of men currently receive treatment
Many of my patients are surprised to learn that testosterone is needed for much more than sexual vitality Many men with low testosterone (Low T) complain of decreased libido, sleep disturbances, weight gain, loss of muscle mass, memory problems, and overall lethargy. These are significant symptoms but low testosterone levels can also be associated with major health risks
Some of these major health risks include:
■ High triglycerides (fat in the blood)
■ Elevated markers of inflammation (contributing factor for heart disease)
■ Higher risk of developing metabolic syndrome (diabetes, hypertension and heart disease)
■ Osteoporosis (bone weakening)
According to research, low testosterone levels may increase the risk of death In a study conducted by the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, Department of Family and Preventive Medicine, “of nearly 800 men, ages 50 to 91 years, men with low testosterone had a 33 percent greater risk of death during the next 18 years than men with higher testosterone ” 1
It is important to note that a man’s testosterone levels decline by 1 to 3% every year and that they can experience symptoms of Low T as early as 30 years of age! By age 45 almost 40% of men have Low T levels, yet remarkably, only 5% of men currently receive treatment.
So, what can be done to correct Low T levels? At Pacific Coast Urology Medical Center’s Male Health & Hormone Center, I advise my patients that there are a variety of replacement therapies such as:
■ Testosterone gels and creams – these are applied daily
■ Testosterone injections - these must be given every 2 to 3 weeks
■ Testosterone pellets – these are injected every 3 to 4 months and are the latest high tech solution
Before beginning any testosterone therapy it is imperative that you have a medical work-up so that serious causes of Low T such as testicular growths, abnormalities of the pituitary gland or a part of the brain called the hypothalamus, are ruled out Screening for prostate cancer must be done Also, blood tests are necessary to determine the levels of both total and free testosterone Recommendations for testosterone replacement therapy may only be made after the medical examination and blood work analysis.
Testosterone replacement therapy successfully addresses Low T when it is administered in the proper dosage and monitored regularly at the Pacic Coast Urology Medical Center ’s Male Health & Hormone Center
The Lazy Dog Café
by Heather Evans
The Lazy Dog Cafe is the kind of place that will cure those marriage-ender fights. You know, the ones when you can’t decide where to go because nothing sounds good? The original restaurant location (located in the Pavilions Center on Beach Blvd. between Edinger and Heil) is home to fresh, delicious food and a menu that literally has something for everyone – from gluten-free dishes to kid-friendly eats and every palate in between
Gabriel Caliendo, CEC and VP of Food and Beverage and Chris Simms, co-owner and founder and their team launched the Lazy Dog Café concept with one thing on their minds: amazing food and an unforgettable guest experience. “We love great food and genuine hospitality, and wanted to share those passions with our neighbors in the Huntington Beach area, says Chris. “We opened our first Lazy Dog in August of 2003 Since then, we have strived to make a difference in people’s lives by creating a new level of expectation for food, service and our teammate’s work environment ”
menu changes twice a year and so does our food menu. Additionally, we have specials for holiday and seasonal events, such as, Oktoberfest and Valentines Day We also have rotating Seasonal Mason Jar drink for adults featuring fresh ingredients in season ”
“Being a family owned and run business, there is a certain level of care that goes into our scratch cooking and personalized service Our guests can feel that, and it makes them want to come back more often,” adds Chris
Lazy Dog Café fans all know that there’s more than one location to this greatness, and you don’t have to be picky about which one you visit Trust me, the deliciousness is found behind each Lazy Dog door!
“It’s one of our biggest challenges, but it’s crucial to us that we create consistency at our multiple locations. I want to motivate the people around me to have the same standards and passion levels that I do, and find the balance of hard work and family fun time,” says Gabriel
You can order a pot-roast beef dip, Togarashi edamame beans, bacon wrapped steak, and (my personal favorite) the Asisan Ahi Tuna burger- all off the same menu! They also have nutritional items, brunch, desser ts, wok dishes and delicious salads I always order the house draft sampler : enough to give you a great taste of every house made beer! The sampler includes their Lazy Dog Honey Blonde, Lazy Dog Red, Lazy Dog Bavarian Hefe, Lazy Dog Pale Ale, Lazy Dog IPA, and Lazy Dog Chocolate Porter They also have mar tinis, happy hour, wine and sangria
“We are very for tunate to have a team of people working with us that believe in doing whatever it takes to make our guests happy,” says Chris. “Without our team, we wouldn’t be able to achieve anything “The most rewarding part of my job is watching our teammates grow and develop in our company, and in turn, enable us to take better and better care of our guests ”
Sounds yummy enough, but what inspired them to take the menu and café to another level? “I love creating new items,” says Gabriel “And I love preparing old favorites, then sharing these with friends, family and/or strangers I love teaching/sharing my knowledge of food with anyone interested in learning and I love to learn from anyone interested in teaching. We are constantly experimenting with new dishes and bar recipes. Our bar
Lazy Dog Café is just the kind of place you want to eat at, and not because you’re hungry. The folks are just plain great people. In fact, the positive vibe of Lazy Dog’s patrons greets you when you walk in the door, and it’s obvious everyone is happy to be there When it comes to great eats, drinks, and great people to be around, The Lazy Dog Café is exactly what’s cooking.
