IRAs are taxed as ordinary income and, if taken before age 59½, may be subject to a 10% federal income tax penalty 2 For individuals covered by a retirement plan at work or for those whose spouse is covered by a retirement plan at work the deduction for a traditional IRA in 2012 is phased out for incomes between $92,000 and $112,000 for married couples filing jointly, and between $58,000 and $68,000 for single filers
Also within certain limits, individuals can make contributions to a Roth IRA with after-tax dollars. To qualify for a tax-free and penalty-free withdrawal of earnings, Roth IRA distributions must meet a five-year holding requirement and occur after age 59½. 3
Like a traditional IRA, contributions to a Roth IRA are limited based on income For 2012, contributions to a Roth IRA are phased out between $173,000 and $183,000 for married couples filing jointly and between $110,000 and $125,000 for single filers.
In addition to contribution and distribution rules, there are limits on how much can be contributed to either IRA In fact, these limits apply to any combination of IRAs; that is, workers cannot put more than $5,000 per year into their Roth and traditional IRAs combined. So, if a worker contributed $3,500 in a given year into a traditional IRA, contributions to a Roth IRA would be limited to $1,500 in that same year. 4

with shorts on, it’s hard to tell the difference in her legs. But like any average teenager, the smallest things can become the most stressful and insecurities run amok.
In fact, insecurity is where her strength began “I remember having a particularly bad breakdown about something a few years ago,” recalls Katy. “My mom sat me down and gave me some tough love. She told me to write a list of five things I loved about myself. It was so hard to do, I couldn’t really think of five things. I got through whatever was upsetting me, but my mom told me to be the person that you want to be That had a great effect on me ”
And about those efforts?

Katy’s the voice behind the very popular blog: teencerebralpalsy.com, a site that has over 15,000 viewers a month and half a million page views. Katy’s been featured on the TV series “Live Life and Win,” and graced the pages of the OC Register S a few awards for efforts, including The Macintosh Education Award for ‘’Outstanding Commitment to the Disabled Community in Orange County’’ in 2010 and most recently the “Outstanding Youth Award,” awarded at The National UCP Convention in San Diego.
It wasn’t long after that Katy was hanging out with her longtime friend Greg Greiner (currently a Junior at Stanford) when an amazing idea was born. “I love to write, so Greg suggested I start a blog I didn’t know where o start He’s computer savvy, so he built he whole site for me That’s when eencerebralpalsy com was born,” she aid.

We’ve become a great, supportive online community It’s wonderful to host a place where we don’t judge We just accept and help each other,” she adds
Don’t let that title fool you, Katy’s hardcore. She plays soccer, runs, works out, and I’m pretty sure she’s in better shape than most of us. Although Katy doesn’t have severe cerebral palsy, she’s still affected by it Although completely mobile, her left side responds slightly slower than her right She suffers from some balance issues, and when she’s nervous her left leg gets very twitchy Even
Katy says she’s come this far and grown this much because of her amazing family. “They inspire me to be the best version of myself and to have no shame. My family raised me to never think of myself differently.” Although Katy has overcome so many personal obstacles, seeing herself on TV really set her back “I kept thinking to myself, ‘do I really look like that?’ ‘Do I really walk like that?’ But then I just

Now a sophomore at Soka University in Aliso Viejo, Katy is fur thering herself by studying Liberal Ar ts and focusing on the humanities. Taking classes in media studies and writing, Katy loves to learn more about what she can do to help others “I’d love to be a writer,” she says “Especially if that involves music Music is my passion, and I love the creative process. My dream job would be to become a lyricist.”
Katy is wise beyond her years, and at the very core, the kindest person you could hope to meet When I asked her how she felt about her amazing impact she said she loved being part of a solution, and knowing her words have positive power in people’s lives. That’s when she said this to me:
“It’s not what I’ve done, it’s what I’m doing ”

It’s not every day that you meet a young woman as remarkable as Evans Tran. Evans is a physician assistant working in a busy urology practice. This article is not just about her skill and the caring and compassionate manner with which she treats patients, but a story of her incredible determination to rise above adversity and fulfill her dreams
As a child of immigrant parents, Evans didn’t have an idyllic Southern California childhood. For many years she lived in a U-haul truck with her family. “My motivation to succeed stems from this childhood experience as I grew up knowing that living in a truck was not what I intended for the rest of my life,” explains Evans
Evans had high hopes for her future and at a young age she decided to embark on a journey to discover her life’s passion. At the age of 14, she was interested in community service and began volunteering at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center This experience introduced her to the field of healthcare where she felt great joy in helping people
Evans enrolled in California State University, Long Beach and earned a BA in Human Development. While in college she gained additional experience in healthcare by completing a Clinical Care Extender Internship Program at St Mary’s Medical Center in Long Beach “My commitment to this internship reinforced my passion for medicine,” remarks Evans
“I fell in love with our office the first day I stepped foot into the facility. Dr. Robert Pugach is a great doctor and an excellent teacher. The staff is compassionate, professional, and welcoming. Although this internship provided medical training, she was interested in a more global experience. Taking advantage of the University’s study abroad program, Evans participated in conservation projects with mentally disabled people in New Zealand and worked with HIV children in South Africa
Upon her return to the United States, Evans was accepted to the Physician Assistant Program at Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, CA. Her life experiences taught her that, in addition to education and training, one’s ability to provide compassion, understanding and trust can positively influence patients’ health and also inspire them to help others

Golden West College held its annual Scholarships and Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, May 7, 2013. This year, 152 scholarships were awarded to 283 students at the ceremony. Since 1986, Golden West College students have received over six million dollars in scholarships. One of the highlights of the event was watching 25 student veterans receive the Southern California Edison Veterans Scholarship, presented by Jenelle Godges, SCE Region Manager
Many of these students are graduating from Golden West this year and will be using the much- appreciated funds to continue their education.

The recipient of this award traditionally gives the student address at the Commencement Ceremony The GWC Student Council established this award in memory of Dr Boyce to recognize a student who most exemplifies the quality of leadership. Two nights prior, I took a date to dinner at the Lazy Dog Café location in Irvine for a fun, casual evening out characterized by a warm, welcoming atmosphere, creative and delicious dishes and friendly and attentive service A defining decorative item - the restaurant’s chandelier are made up of small logs suspended from the ceiling intertwined with dangling bulbs which resulted in a unique country ambiance infused with a hint of metropolitan edge

We began our meal with the “hummus trio,” which arrived with three types of hummus accompanied by freshly baked pita bread. Next, we split the Lazy Dog Café’s generous sized house special salad (“Maggie’s Snake River”) which combines field greens and hickory-smoked bacon with Laura Chenel eese, dried cranberries, canalnuts, tomatoes, and a tasty c vinaigrette.

After placing our order for a “Chicken Focaccia Sandwich” and “Asian Ahi Tuna Burger,” we were surprised to discover that there were dogfriendly entrees on the menu for Bucky, including a chopped hamburger patty or chicken breast, both of which our server insisted were delicious enough to reside on the “real” menu.

Inherently we know these ideas sound all wrong, but so many people try them anyway! Why do we, as instinctual human beings, sometimes choose to ignore the obvious? Why don’t we trust our instinct? Here’s another example of our human tendency to ignore logic: In my 28 years in the fitness industry, I have never once heard someone say, “I am so mad! I meant to sleep in this morning, but I got out of bed and exercised!” I sure have heard the opposite of that statement! Instinctively, we know how good we feel when we make the choice to exercise, but we choose to ignore that instinct and sleep in Why do some people ignore the great feeling they get from making the choice to exercise and others choose to take action?
1. Strong natural impulse: a powerful impulse that feels natural rather than reasoned
2. Biological drive: an inborn pattern of behavior characteristic of a species and shaped by biological necessities such as survival
had an interesting discussion with one of my 20-year-old twins. It seems that since she is the offspring of people immersed in the health & fitness industry, her friends think she has the answers to their health/fitness questions What really perplexes her is their willingness to ignore the obvious because they heard that “this or that” was a better way to “get healthy ” Her observation was spot on whedn she asked me, “Why do people seem to totally ignore their natural instincts?” Beats me. Are people looking for options that are easier or trendier? This is a great question and it got me thinking about the interesting phenomenon of basic human instincts versus our choice to either embrace or ignore them
Why do people ignore what they instinctively know doesn’t feel right, makes sense, tastes good, hurts…etc? Is it because they read somewhere that “this” was the road to health or good looks? Isn’t doing something against your better judgment the opposite of instinct? If we are fortunate enough to choose how we approach our health and fitness, then we are indeed in a good position Not everyone is so fortunate, so why would anyone purposely choose to diet or exercise in a way that feels wrong or unnatural to them? “6 Minutes to Great Abs?” Come on. Inherently you know that will never work, despite the perfect abs of the model in the picture
Here are a few more examples: “I hate running, it hurts my knees, but I guess I have to start running if I want to get fit and lose weight.”
“Everyone I know says they’re gluten intolerant now, so I guess I should stop eating gluten, but I love so many of the “forbidden” foods and I’m not gluten intolerant ”
“If I want to make my muscles longer I hear I should try that
Choice:
1. Act of choosing something or somebody: a decision to choose one thing, person, or course of action in preference to others
2. Power to choose: the chance or ability to choose between different things
When dealing with diet, there are too many examples for me to list, but every day we are faced with the choice of what to put in to our mouth to either satisfy us or fuel us Sometimes those two go hand-in-hand, which is great but sometimes we face a choice
In America, we are confronted daily with a multitude of food choices. It can be maddening or liberating, depending on how you choose to look at it. Sadly, some people become so emotionally tied to food, they become victims of their up-bringing or other underlying issues This vicious cycle can absolutely be broken, but it takes effort and it’s so much easier to ignore our instincts and eat what is more convenient or more temporarily satisfying Ideally, at some point, instinct over-rides emotion and the individual takes control. Or, sadly, their ability to choose might be taken away due to illness or other maladies resulting from their poor choices
So, HB, I challenge you to pay attention to your instincts! If it feels wrong, hurts, or just seems off, use your instincts to choose what you know is right for YOU. I believe almost all of you know instinctively what is right in terms of food and exercise to help you feel/look better. You have the gift of choice, count your blessings and choose to take care of the only body you have Just Decide
