IRAs are taxed as ordinary income and, if taken before age 59½, may be subject to a 10% federal income tax penalty. 2 For individuals covered by a retirement plan at work—or for those whose spouse is covered by a retirement plan at work—the deduction for a traditional IRA in 2012 is phased out for incomes between $92,000 and $112,000 for married couples filing jointly, and between $58,000 and $68,000 for single filers.

Also within certain limits, individuals can make contributions to a Roth IRA with after-tax dollars. To qualify for a tax-free and penalty-free withdrawal of earnings, Roth IRA distributions must meet a five-year holding requirement and occur after age 59½. 3 Like a traditional IRA, contributions to a Roth IRA are limited based on income. For 2012, contributions to a Roth IRA are phased out between $173,000 and $183,000 for married couples filing jointly and between $110,000 and $125,000 for single filers.

In addition to contribution and distribution rules, there are limits on how much can be contributed to either IRA. In fact, these limits apply to any combination of IRAs; that is, workers cannot put more than $5,000 per year into their Roth and traditional IRAs combined. So, if a worker contributed $3,500 in a given year into a traditional IRA, contributions to a Roth IRA would be limited to $1,500 in that same year. 4 Fast Fact: Wealthy Owners. by Heather Evans with shorts on, it’s hard to tell the difference in her legs. But like any average teenager, the smallest things can become the most stressful and insecurities run amok.

In fact, insecurity is where her strength began. “I remember having a particularly bad breakdown about something a few years ago,” recalls Katy. “My mom sat me down and gave me some tough love. She told me to write a list of five things I loved about myself. It was so hard to do, I couldn’t really think of five things. I got through whatever was upsetting me, but my mom told me to be the person that you want to be. That had a great effect on me.”

It wasn’t long after that Katy was hanging out with her longtime friend Greg Greiner (currently a Junior at Stanford) when an amazing idea was born. “I love to write, so Greg suggested I start a blog. I didn’t know where to start. He’s computer savvy, so he built the whole site for me. That’s when teencerebralpalsy.com was born,” she said.

he might look just like anyone else but make no mistake; Katy Fetters isn’t your average girl. Besides her beautiful blonde locks, athletic figure and knockout smile, Katy is a serious dose of courage and inspiration for many, many teens across the world.

Katy’s the voice behind the very popular blog: teencerebralpalsy.com, a site that has over 15,000 viewers a month and half a million page views.

Katy’s been featured on the TV series “Live Life and Win,” and graced the pages of the OC Register. She’s even won a few awards for efforts, including The Macintosh Education Award for ‘’Outstanding Commitment to the Disabled Community in Orange County’’ in 2010 and most recently the “Outstanding Youth Award,” awarded at The National UCP Convention in San Diego.

And about those efforts?

Katy’s blog has quickly become the go-to place for teens with cerebral palsy and those in need of support. “It inspires me to know that we all have such similarity in the things we worry and feel insecure about.

I’ve learned my words and advice have power, and I love being able to help people,” Katy says. Katy reads every email that comes her way, and gives advice when she can. “Some girls want to know simple things like how they can get a boy to like them, especially because they aren’t feeling pretty due of their CP. Others want to know how to overcome an embarrassing situation like tripping, or just how to fit in. I always say to be yourself, and be true to that, and to be honest and open. Sometimes I get the occasional email I can’t answer. For example, someone wrote in and said they wanted advice about learning to drive with hand controls. Since I don’t have experience with that, I shared the question on my TeenCP facebook page. We’ve become a great, supportive online community. It’s wonderful to host a place where we don’t judge. We just accept and help each other,” she adds.

Don’t let that title fool you, Katy’s hardcore. She plays soccer, runs, works out, and I’m pretty sure she’s in better shape than most of us. Although Katy doesn’t have severe cerebral palsy, she’s still affected by it. Although completely mobile, her left side responds slightly slower than her right. She suffers from some balance issues, and when she’s nervous her left leg gets very twitchy. Even

Katy says she’s come this far and grown this much because of her amazing family. “They inspire me to be the best version of myself and to have no shame. My family raised me to never think of myself differently.” Although Katy has overcome so many personal obstacles, seeing herself on TV really set her back. “I kept thinking to myself, ‘do I really look like that?’ ‘Do I really walk like that?’ But then I just

started crying because I realized how proud of myself I was for having the courage to do the television show. I’ve learned to just be positive and let things go.”

Now a sophomore at Soka University in Aliso Viejo, Katy is furthering herself by studying Liberal Arts and focusing on the humanities.

Taking classes in media studies and writing, Katy loves to learn more about what she can do to help others. “I’d love to be a writer,” she says. “Especially if that involves music. Music is my passion, and I love the creative process.

My dream job would be to become a lyricist.”

Katy is wise beyond her years, and at the very core, the kindest person you could hope to meet. When I asked her how she felt about her amazing impact she said she loved being part of a solution, and knowing her words have positive power in people’s lives. That’s when she said this to me: “It’s not what I’ve done, it’s what I’m doing.”

hen I sat down to interview Donald Hunsberger, one of the first questions I asked him was what kind of person he would like to see walking into his office. He didn’t have to think much before answering: A healthy married couple in their midthirties, busy raising children, building their careers with the possibility of creating their own businesses, and fairly hopeful about the many years stretched out before them. It took me a minute to realize he was describing me.

The average client of an estate and business planning lawyer like Don Hunsberger is older; they’re confronting the reality of looming retirement or even death, and they’re looking to make their wishes legal. In short, they’re more aware of their mortality. My husband and me?

We’re too busy meeting the demands of hungry mouths, challenging jobs and a height-ofthe-market mortgage, and it’s not like we have the Grim Reaper hovering. Tax Smart Investing Tips Contributions to Roth IRAs and Roth 401(k) savings plans are not deductible. Earnings that accumulate in Roth accounts can be withdrawn tax free if you are over age 59 1/2, have held the account for at least five years, and meet the requirements for a qualified distribution.

Tip #2: Manage Investments for Tax Efficiency Tax-managed investment accounts are managed in ways that can help reduce their taxable distributions. Your investment professional can employ a combination of tactics, such as minimizing portfolio turnover, investing in stocks that do not pay dividends and selectively selling stocks that have become less attractive at a loss to counterbalance taxable gains elsewhere in the portfolio. In years when returns on the broader market are flat or negative, investors tend to become more aware of capital gains generated by portfolio turnover, since the resulting tax liability can offset any gain or exacerbate a negative return on the investment.

Tip #3: Put Losses to Work At times, you may be able to use losses in your investment portfolio to help offset realized gains. It's a good idea to evaluate your holdings periodically to assess whether an investment still offers the long-term potential you anticipated when you purchased it. Your realized losses in a given tax year must first be used to offset realized capital gains. If you have "leftover" losses, you can offset up to $3,000 against ordinary income.

Finding Your Life’s Work Meet Evans Tran, Physician Assistant

t’s not every day that you meet a young woman as remarkable as Evans Tran. Evans is a physician assistant working in a busy urology practice. This article is not just about her skill and the caring and compassionate manner with which she treats patients, but a story of her incredible determination to rise above adversity and fulfill her dreams.

I

As a child of immigrant parents, Evans didn’t have an idyllic Southern California childhood.

For many years she lived in a U-haul truck with her family. “My motivation to succeed stems from this childhood experience as I grew up knowing that living in a truck was not what I intended for the rest of my life,” explains Evans.

Evans had high hopes for her future and at a young age she decided to embark on a journey to discover her life’s passion. At the age of 14, she was interested in community service and began volunteering at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center. This experience introduced her to the field of healthcare where she felt great joy in helping people.

Evans enrolled in California State University, Long Beach and earned a BA in Human Development. While in college she gained additional experience in healthcare by completing a Clinical Care Extender Internship Program at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Long Beach. “My commitment to this internship reinforced my passion for medicine,” remarks Evans.

“I fell in love with our office the first day I stepped foot into the facility. Dr. Robert Pugach is a great doctor and an excellent teacher. The staff is compassionate, professional, and welcoming. The best part about being at Pacific Coast Urology Medical Center is the teamwork with our staff and patients. The ability to work together with patients to make sure they improve and feel better is what I enjoy most about being a Physician Assistant.’’

Although this internship provided medical training, she was interested in a more global experience. Taking advantage of the University’s study abroad program, Evans participated in conservation projects with mentally disabled people in New Zealand and worked with HIV children in South Africa.

Upon her return to the United States, Evans was accepted to the Physician Assistant Program at Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, CA. Her life experiences taught her that, in addition to education and training, one’s ability to provide compassion, understanding and trust can positively influence patients’ health and also inspire them to help others.

“Compassion and empathy are what I have learned to provide as a human development major when I understood that cultural, religious, and traditional backgrounds are the backbone of compassionate values.”

Evans received her Master of Science and is a board certified Physician Assistant. She works at Pacific Coast Urology Medical Center with Dr. Robert Pugach.

One of the highlights of the event was watching 25 student veterans receive the Southern California Edison Veterans Scholarship In addition to the scholarships awarded at the ceremony, scholarships were awarded at local high schools for incoming GWC students and at other ceremonies for Criminal Justice, Nursing, and Independent groups.

Golden West College Honors Students and Thanks Donors Golden West College held its annual Scholarships and Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, May 7, 2013. This year, 152 scholarships were awarded to 283 students at the ceremony. Since 1986, Golden West College students have received over six million dollars in scholarships.

One of the highlights of the event was watching 25 student veterans receive the Southern California Edison Veterans Scholarship, presented by Jenelle Godges, SCE Region Manager.

Many of these students are graduating from Golden West this year and will be using the much- appreciated funds to continue their education.

GWC’s top award, the R. Dudley Boyce Outstanding Student Award, was presented to Dale Lendrum. The recipient of this award traditionally gives the student address at the Commencement Ceremony. The GWC Student Council established this award in memory of Dr. Boyce to recognize a student who most exemplifies the quality of leadership. Dale has held many leadership positions, including the Associated Student President for two years.

Golden West College thanks the donors for giving these students an opportunity to reach their academic goals. In these challenging economic times, it is wonderful that so many donors have chosen to support Golden West College students.

Two nights prior, I took a date to dinner at the Lazy Dog Café location in Irvine for a fun, casual evening out characterized by a warm, welcoming atmosphere, creative and delicious dishes and friendly and attentive service. A defining decorative item - the restaurant’s chandelier are made up of small logs suspended from the ceiling intertwined with dangling bulbs which resulted in a unique country ambiance infused with a hint of metropolitan edge.

by Cooper Rummell here was no better place to be on a warm summer day, sheltered by the shade of the terrace, reclining in a patio chair and enjoying the company of my dad and our Golden Retriever Bucky. No, we weren’t at the park or hanging out in the back yard; rather, we were out for lunch at the Lazy Dog Café in Huntington Beach.

“Welcome to the Lazy Dog Café, can I take your order?” joked our server as she crouched down to welcome her canine customer.

For a refreshing start, I skimmed the long list of beverage options including 14 draft beers, six handcrafted Lazy Dog house drafts, exotic mixed drinks and a sundry of summery non-alcoholic beverages (think “Jamaican Lemonade,” “Pomegranate Punch” and the classic “Root Beer Float”).

We began our meal with the “hummus trio,” which arrived with three types of hummus accompanied by freshly baked pita bread. Next, we split the Lazy Dog Café’s generous sized house special salad (“Maggie’s Snake River”) which combines field greens and hickory-smoked bacon with Laura Chenel goat cheese, dried cranberries, candied walnuts, tomatoes, and a tasty balsamic vinaigrette.

The “Bahama Chicken” adds a Caribbean twist to a classic chicken dinner while the “Sundried Tomato Pesto Penne” was a flavorful (and filling) pasta favorite.

Save some room for dessert: The Lazy Dog’s mouthwatering “Homemade Apple Cobbler” is made fresh, served piping hot, and topped with a melt-in-your-mouth buttery crumble crust, vanilla bean ice cream and whipped cream.

The restaurant group, established in Westminster in 2003 by founder Chris Simms, the Lazy Dog Café currently boasts 10 Southern California locations and is scheduled to open five more in the next 18 months.

A Southland native “born into a restaurant family,” Simms spent summers as a child in the calming mountains of Jackson Hole, Wyoming, where he learned the importance of small town hospitality as he cooked and waited tables in the Rockies.

It is evident through the service, food, and atmosphere that Simms’s influence for the Lazy Dog Café came from his California upbringing, melded with his summers spent in Jackson Hole. From the rustic décor, to the versatile cuisine, the Lazy Dog Café has a table and a dish for everyone, including your dog.

After placing our order for a “Chicken Focaccia Sandwich” and “Asian Ahi Tuna Burger,” we were surprised to discover that there were dogfriendly entrees on the menu for Bucky, including a chopped hamburger patty or chicken breast, both of which our server insisted were delicious enough to reside on the “real” menu.

Turns out, she wasn’t kidding. My curiosity got the better of me and I had to give Bucky’s chicken breast a try. All of our choices were flavorful and prepared to perfection.

Aside from appealing to dog lovers, the Lazy Dog Café literally has something to offer even the most discriminating palate.

HB 4th of July Parade: Surf, Sun & Celebrate he tradition began on July 4, 1904, when Huntington Beach commemorated the arrival of the first electric passenger train linking the area with Long Beach and Los Angeles. The Board of Trade, a forerunner of the Chamber of Commerce, sponsored this first event, bringing 50,000 people to town to join in the day’s celebration.

Through the years, residents and visitors have witnessed some spectacular sights. How’s this for a show-stopping stunt by a city official? In the late 1930s, the city’s first lifeguard and fire chief, Dilbert “Bud” Higgins had a trick that no one has since imitated. He would don a firesuit, cover his face with petroleum jelly, soak himself with alcohol, light a match and dive in a fiery ball from a 50-foot platform high above the pier into the water below.

Among the famous who have presided over the parade in years past are Hollywood movie stars Jayne Mansfield, Natalie Wood, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Dorothy Lamour, Mickey Rooney (and Mickey Mouse!) and a true American hero, astronaut Buzz Aldrin. The best legend goes that during his presidency, Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s entourage was on its way through town, headed for San Diego, as the parade was going on. Quickthinking parade organizers persuaded them take a slow pass along the parade route, to the delight of those gathered to watch.

The Parade marked its centennial in 2004 by bringing the fireworks back to the beach (from its former location at Huntington Beach High School), which drew 150,000 onlookers. This year’s fireworks 23-minute spectacular, with a total of 1,300 rounds of fireworks – 500 of them during the finale in the last 40 seconds of the show — is expected to attract twice that many.

bar/dance-type class. But I love lifting weights and it was the only thing that really seemed to work.”

And my favorite: “I really want to lose weight, so I’m only going to eat one meal a day and exercise a bunch more.”

Inherently we know these ideas sound all wrong, but so many people try them anyway! Why do we, as instinctual human beings, sometimes choose to ignore the obvious? Why don’t we trust our instinct? Here’s another example of our human tendency to ignore logic: In my 28 years in the fitness industry, I have never once heard someone say, “I am so mad! I meant to sleep in this morning, but I got out of bed and exercised!” I sure have heard the opposite of that statement! Instinctively, we know how good we feel when we make the choice to exercise, but we choose to ignore that instinct and sleep in. Why do some people ignore the great feeling they get from making the choice to exercise and others choose to take action?

It seems that since she is the offspring of people immersed in the health & fitness industry, her friends think she has the answers to their health/fitness questions. What really perplexes her is their willingness to ignore the obvious because they heard that “this or that” was a better way to “get healthy.” Her observation was spot on whedn she asked me, “Why do people seem to totally ignore their natural instincts?” Beats me. Are people looking for options that are easier or trendier? This is a great question and it got me thinking about the interesting phenomenon of basic human instincts versus our choice to either embrace or ignore them.

When dealing with diet, there are too many examples for me to list, but every day we are faced with the choice of what to put in to our mouth to either satisfy us or fuel us. Sometimes those two go hand-in-hand, which is great but sometimes we face a choice.

Why do people ignore what they instinctively know doesn’t feel right, makes sense, tastes good, hurts…etc? Is it because they read somewhere that “this” was the road to health or good looks? Isn’t doing something against your better judgment the opposite of instinct? If we are fortunate enough to choose how we approach our health and fitness, then we are indeed in a good position. Not everyone is so fortunate, so why would anyone purposely choose to diet or exercise in a way that feels wrong or unnatural to them? “6 Minutes to Great Abs?” Come on. Inherently you know that will never work, despite the perfect abs of the model in the picture.

In America, we are confronted daily with a multitude of food choices. It can be maddening or liberating, depending on how you choose to look at it. Sadly, some people become so emotionally tied to food, they become victims of their up-bringing or other underlying issues. This vicious cycle can absolutely be broken, but it takes effort and it’s so much easier to ignore our instincts and eat what is more convenient or more temporarily satisfying. Ideally, at some point, instinct over-rides emotion and the individual takes control. Or, sadly, their ability to choose might be taken away due to illness or other maladies resulting from their poor choices.

Here are a few more examples: So, HB, I challenge you to pay attention to your instincts! If it feels “I hate running, it hurts my knees, but I guess I have to start running wrong, hurts, or just seems off, use your instincts to choose what if I want to get fit and lose weight.” you know is right for YOU. I believe almost all of you know instinctively what is right in terms of food and exercise to help you “Everyone I know says they’re gluten intolerant now, so I guess I feel/look better. You have the gift of choice, count your blessings should stop eating gluten, but I love so many of the “forbidden” foods and choose to take care of the only body you have. Just Decide. and I’m not gluten intolerant.”
