If You Invested $100 in 1928…

Three Choices. One Century. A Lesson in Time and Compounding. Picture this. You time travel back to 1928. Jazz pours out of crowded clubs, new automobiles hum through city streets, and radios flicker to life in living rooms across America. In your pocket sits a crisp $100 bill. You have a choice: invest it, then fast-forward a century to see what becomes of it. But only one path is allowed. • Hide it safely in a mattress • Lend it to the U.S. government for steady interest • Or let it ride in the stock market, where fortunes seem to rise and fall with every headline And you have an advantage they didn’t: you already know what’s coming—the Great Depression, World War II, inflation, booms, crashes, and decades of uncertainty. Which do you choose? The difference between these paths is not subtle. It is defining.

Choice #1 THE MATTRESS In 1928, keeping your money in cash might have felt like the most responsible decision. No market swings. No headlines. No risk. Just certainty. Your $100 stays exactly where you left it. At the time, that same $100 could cover a month’s rent in many parts of the country, with money left over for groceries, clothing, and transportation.¹ It was real purchasing power.

Not flashy. Not headline-making. But dependable. This is the kind of growth that doesn’t shout—it compounds. Slowly. Relentlessly. The reward is not in timing the world perfectly, but in giving time enough to do its work.

Choice #3 THE STOCK MARKET Then there’s the path that feels least comfortable in the moment: the market itself. It rises, it falls, it panics, it recovers. It never offers certainty—only participation. But history shows that within that volatility sits the most powerful engine of long-term growth. Because while fear dominates headlines in the short run, compounding quietly reshapes outcomes in the long run.

But certainty has a quiet flaw: it doesn’t move forward.

Three choices. One century.

Over time, inflation slowly erodes what that money can do. The dollars remain the same, but their value does not. Fast forward nearly a century, and that $100 might barely cover a dinner out or a tank of gas. It didn’t disappear. It simply lost its voice.

And a reminder that the biggest difference in wealth is rarely about timing the world perfectly—but about how long you are willing to let time work on your behalf.

Choice #2 LEND TO UNCLE SAM In 1928, this would have felt like the “grown-up” option. Not hiding money. Not gambling on markets. Just steady, predictable returns backed by the U.S. government. No drama. No excitement. Just interest, paid year after year. And over time, it worked. At roughly 4.5% average annual returns, that $100 would have grown to more than $7,700 over the century.² 6

Honoring Those Who Served

The Gift We Give Each Other By Jody Robinson

S

ome months carry a little more meaning than others. For me, this month is especially special because it is my mom’s birthday month—and with the holidays surrounding us, I find myself thinking even more about family, memories and the precious gift of time.

The Gift of Being Together Working in hospice has taught me something I never want to take for granted: time together is never ordinary.

And perhaps there is no better time to remember that than during the holidays. We can become so focused on finding the perfect gift that we overlook the gift that cannot be purchased: our presence. Call your parents. Visit a grandparent. Sit with someone who may be lonely. Put the phone away and listen to a story you have heard before. Take the family picture. Make the memories. Those are the gifts that stay with us.

At Community Care Hospice of OC, I have the privilege of seeing families come together during some of life’s most tender moments. Sometimes it is a daughter sitting beside her mother. A husband holding his wife’s hand. Grandchildren gathered around a bedside, listening to stories they may one day tell their own children. These moments remind me that hospice is not simply about caring for someone at the end of life. It is about helping people live fully in the time they have—comfortably, surrounded by the people and things that matter most. 8

This is also a season when I am particularly mindful of the veterans and families we are honored to serve. Community Care Hospice of OC works together with the VA and is contracted with TRICARE/TriWest. We are also blessed with veteran volunteers and chaplains who bring a special understanding to our care. Their experience allows them to connect with veterans in meaningful ways and help families navigate the unique challenges, including trauma, that can surface during this chapter of life. There is something profoundly moving about caring for those who spent their lives caring for others. As I move through my mom’s birthday month, I am reminded that some of the most meaningful celebrations are not marked by gatherings, beautifully wrapped presents, or the traditions we once shared. They are found in the memories we hold close, the love that remains, and the quiet moments when I feel her presence in my heart. Though she is no longer here to celebrate with us, her love continues to be a part of every day, and I am grateful for every moment we were blessed to have together. This holiday season, I hope we can all give a little more of ourselves. More time. More listening. More hugs. More memories. Because when everything else is gone, it is the time we shared—and the love we gave—that remains.

The Gift of Being Ready By Jay Minor

The holidays have a way of shifting our perspective. As families gather around Thanksgiving tables this month, some of you may find yourselves quietly noticing changes in a spouse or aging parent that distance and busy schedules had kept out of view.

O

thers may be doing some quiet noticing of your own — wondering whether the home you have lived in for decades is still the right fit for this season of life. Those observations matter. And what you do with them matters even more. One of the most meaningful gifts you can give the people you love, and yourself, is the gift of being ready. Not reacting to a crisis, but preparing thoughtfully before one arrives. In my experience working with families across South Orange County, the people who navigate senior living transitions most gracefully are almost always the ones who started the conversation early. That does not mean making a decision before you are ready. It means doing the research, asking the questions, and getting a realistic picture of what options exist while you still have the time and clarity to consider them well. It means knowing what senior living actually looks like today, rather than relying on memories of institutions that no longer exist. It means understanding what things cost, what care levels are available, and which communities feel like a genuine fit for your personality and lifestyle.

PREPARATION BRINGS PEACE OF MIND The people who have done that work tell me the same thing consistently. 10

When something unexpected happened, a health event, a household crisis, a sudden change in circumstances, they were ready to act. Not scrambling. Not panicking. Just moving forward with confidence because they already knew the path. That kind of preparation is exactly what the Senior Living Discovery Tour is designed to help with. This December I am hosting two tours across South Orange County. On December 1st, we will visit The Seville in San Clemente and The Orchards in Rancho Mission Viejo. On December 3rd, we will visit Ivy Park at Laguna Woods and Belmont Village in Aliso Viejo. At each community you will have the chance to see the environment firsthand, enjoy a meal or refreshments, and get a genuine feel for the culture and lifestyle each one offers. You will also experience it alongside other people who are in the same season of life, asking the same questions, and carrying the same quiet hope that there is a good path forward. That shared experience has a way of making the whole process feel less daunting and more possible. The tours are designed for individuals and families who are genuinely thinking about senior living within the next year or so. I have a brief conversation with each person beforehand to make sure the timing and fit are right. There is no cost and no obligation. Just honest, firsthand experience that

TRUST, TEAMWORK, AND THE PERSONAL TOUCH

EVERY BUSINESS HAS A STORY—

The Deal Firm Helps with Happy Endings By Jody Robinson

For years, a small restaurant in Dana Point was more than a place to eat—it was a family’s dream, built with early mornings, late nights, and countless sacrifices.

W

hen the owners wondered what came next, they faced a question every business owner eventually does: How do you close one chapter without losing the heart of what you built? Enter The Deal Firm, a boutique business brokerage and M&A firm known in Southern California for treating exits not as transactions, but as milestones. Their philosophy is simple: respect, transparency, and a distinctly human touch.

FROM BUSINESS OWNER TO TRUSTED BROKER Tom Burns leads the firm locally, bringing real-world experience to the table. Before joining The Deal Firm in 2008, he spent 19 years running a garment manufacturing company in Los Angeles, managing 70 12

employees and navigating banks, accountants, and major retailers. Along the way, he owned and sold three restaurants—including that small Dana Point spot—and felt firsthand the emotional weight of selling a business. “That experience gave me the confidence to sit across from business owners and truly understand what they’re dealing with,” Burns says. “Their successes, their struggles, the pressure—it’s familiar territory.” His move into brokerage began with frustration: searching for a restaurant to buy, he found brokers who left much to be desired. “I thought I could do a better job than these people,” he recalls. That dissatisfaction became a calling.

The Deal Firm thrives on its small but seasoned team. With decades of collective experience across industries, the brokers combine broad knowledge with individualized attention. “If one of us hasn’t sold a certain type of business before, someone else on the team has,” Burns notes. Equally critical is trust. Owners feel comfortable sharing the nuances— the details that don’t appear on spreadsheets but can make or break a deal. That trust ensures owners are prepared for what is often the most significant financial decision of their lives. Burns, who holds a B.S. in Business Management from Miami University and an MBA from Long Island University, emphasizes empathy over credentials. “I love talking to business owners,” he says. “Listening to their stories and helping them plan an exit— now or years down the road—is what makes this work meaningful.” In a region defined by reinvention, The Deal Firm stands out by honoring what came Tom Burns before. With modern tools, transparent processes, and a deeply personal approach, the firm helps owners close one chapter with clarity, confidence, and the respect their life’s work deserves.

ost of us don’t spend much time thinking about auto repair – until we need it. Whether it’s a collision, a strange noise under the hood, or routine maintenance, finding someone you trust can make an already stressful situation a little easier. For Peter Capdevielle, building that trust has been the heart of his work for more than 30 years. “When you love what you do, it shows,” Peter says. “I’ve always loved cars, but what has kept me in this business is helping people. We treat every customer with honesty, respect, and professionalism.” For the past two decades, Peter has owned and operated the Maaco Auto Body & Paint Center in Lake Forest, providing expert collision repairs and complete paint jobs at affordable prices for all makes and models, including motor homes. Last year, he expanded the business by bringing Meineke Car Care to the same location, creating a full-service automotive center where customers can have both collision repairs and mechanical work completed under one roof. “It just makes life easier for people,” he says. “Whether it’s body work after an accident or routine maintenance, 14

our customers don’t have to visit multiple shops.”

KNOWING YOU HAVE A CHOICE One of the biggest surprises Peter shares with new customers has nothing to do with repairing cars. “After an accident, many people assume they have to take their vehicle to the body shop their insurance company recommends,” he says. “What most people don’t realize is they have the legal right to choose any repair shop they want.” That choice can make a significant difference.

NATIONAL BRANDS. LOCAL COMMITMENT. While Maaco and Meineke are nationally recognized brands with decades of experience, Peter believes it’s local ownership that truly sets his business apart. “We’re part of this community,” he says. “Our reputation matters because these are our neighbors.” Every repair is backed by a nationwide warranty, giving customers added confidence wherever they travel. More importantly, Peter says, his experienced team understands that every vehicle represents someone’s daily life, and getting it repaired correctlyr – and as quickly as possibler – matters.

Many insurance-recommended shops operate under agreements with insurance carriers. Peter’s shop doesn’t.

After more than three decades in the automotive industry, Peter says the most rewarding part of the job hasn’t changed.

“Our responsibility is to our customer – not the insurance company,” he explains. “Our job is to repair the vehicle properly and safely while helping our customers navigate the claims process. We advocate for them be-

California Gun Services Helping families navigate the responsibility of firearms left behind

By Jody Robinson

For many seniors, widows, and adult children, the passing of a loved one brings an unexpected discovery layered into an already emotional time: firearms tucked away in closets, safes, nightstands, or garages—often accompanied by more questions than answers.

W

hat do you do with them? Are they legal to keep? Can they be sold, moved, or simply given away? For Jeff McCabe, owner of California Gun Services, these are not abstract questions—they are daily phone calls. “Most people don’t realize how complex California gun laws are until they’re suddenly responsible for a firearm they didn’t expect to have,” he says. “Many times, the firearm belonged to a late husband or father. The family doesn’t want it, but they also don’t know what to do with it.” Those moments reveal a gap between legal complexity and everyday understanding— especially for seniors who may no longer feel comfortable handling firearms, or heirs who want to do the right thing but don’t know where to begin.

WHERE LAW MEETS SENSITIVITY California’s firearm regulations 16

are not only detailed—they are constantly evolving. Even well-meaning actions, like transporting a firearm or attempting to “turn it in,” can inadvertently create legal issues. Beyond the law, there is also the human side: grief, memory, and sometimes hesitation about removing something that once belonged (or currently belongs) to a loved one like a recent case where McCabe assisted a family managing a father in the early stages of dementia. The firearms were legally owned, but the family needed a solution that prioritized safety without causing distress. “These situations require patience and respect,” he says. “It’s not just about removal—it’s about understanding what the family is going through.”

A TRUSTED GUIDE THROUGH A COMPLICATED PROCESS McCabe and his team offer in-home services designed to simplify what can otherwise feel overwhelming. Through California Gun Services, clients receive:

In cases of inheritance, McCabe often works alongside estate attorneys and family members to ensure everything is handled properly and respectfully. San Clemente resident Rhonda Murphy remembers the relief she felt after calling McCabe following her husband’s passing. “I didn’t want to keep the guns, and I wasn’t sure what was legal,” she says. “Jeff came to the house, handled everything professionally, and took the worry off my shoulders. It was one less thing to deal with during a very hard time.”

A SERVICE BUILT ON RESPONSIBILITY For McCabe, the mission is simple: reduce risk, ensure compliance, and bring peace of mind to families navigating a difficult transition. “Firearms can last longer than a lifetime,” he says. “Knowing what you have—and what to do with it—is essential.”

Elevating Outdoor Living with

ReelTime Sight and Sound

By Jody Robinson

Cover imagery + main photo this page by Diana Schmitt, Accent Portraits by Diana

There’s something about life in South Orange County that naturally unfolds outdoors. Maybe it’s the golden light that lingers a little longer.

M

aybe it’s the way dinner drifts from the kitchen to the patio without a second thought. Here, the backyard isn’t an accessory — it’s an extension of home. But transforming that space into something seamless, polished, and truly effortless? That’s where details multiply quickly. You start with a television by the pool. Then you learn outdoor TVs must withstand heat, glare, coastal air, and moisture. You add speakers — but they need to blend into landscaping. Then lighting. Patio heaters. Strong Wi-Fi. Suddenly, what felt simple becomes layered with wiring questions, compatibility issues, and too many remotes. 18

That’s where Reel Time Sight and Sound comes in - quietly replacing complexity with clarity. “We design outdoor spaces that feel effortless,” says Owner Jon Colburn. “Technology should enhance how you live. It shouldn’t complicate it.”

The Art of Outdoor Living Outdoor living has evolved far beyond a grill and patio set. Today’s homeowners envision full environments — outdoor kitchens, covered lounges, poolside entertainment zones, and integrated audio and video systems that rival anything indoors.

Reel Time specializes in designing these spaces from the ground up. Their weather-rated outdoor televisions are engineered for full sun, partial sun, or shaded installations — built specifically to resist extreme temperatures and glare while delivering crystalclear images in bright daylight. Audio is approached just as thoughtfully. Rather than mounting bulky speakers on exterior walls, Reel Time installs discreet landscape systems. Satellite speakers blend into plantings, and in-ground subwoofers provide rich bass without visual clutter. “The sound should feel natural,” Jon explains. “It shouldn’t feel like it’s com-

ing from a box on the wall. It should feel like it’s part of the space.” From lively pool gatherings to quiet evenings with soft music under the stars, the system adapts with a simple tap.

Seamless Control, Inside and Out One of Reel Time’s greatest strengths is integration. As a certified dealer of Control4, the company designs automation systems that unify indoor and outdoor living. Lighting, music, televisions, motorized patio shades, heaters, security cameras, pool equipment, and gate access can all be managed through one elegant interface. “You shouldn’t need five remotes and six apps,” Jon says. “We simplify everything so you can enjoy it.” Outdoor Wi-Fi networks are another foundational piece. Reel Time engineers robust networking systems that eliminate dead zones, ensuring strong connectivity from the front driveway to the farthest edge of the backyard. In today’s world, seamless connectivity isn’t a luxury — it’s essential.

Beyond Entertainment: Complete Outdoor Environments Outdoor living is about more than screens and speakers. Reel Time collaborates closely with homeowners, designers, and contractors to integrate technology into every layer of the environment, including:

• Smart landscape and architectural lighting • Motorized patio shades and retractable screens • Outdoor-rated security and surveillance systems • Integrated pool and spa controls • Fire feature and heater automation • Whole-home audio that extends outdoors Every component is selected with durability in mind. Coastal air and sun exposure demand professional-grade equipment and careful installation. “We plan for longevity,” Jon says. “It’s not just about what looks beautiful on day one. It’s about what still works beautifully years from now.”

Bringing the Same Precision Indoors While outdoor living is a signature focus, Reel Time provides comprehensive solutions for the entire home. Custom home theaters and media rooms remain a cornerstone of their work, with acoustically engineered speaker placement, clean wiring, and custom cabinetry designed for both performance and aesthetics. Wholehome audio, smart lighting control, structured wiring, networking infrastructure, security systems, Frame TV installations, custom mounting solutions, and commercial audio/video systems for local businesses round out their offerings. All designers and technicians are inhouse — licensed professionals who handle installation, programming, and final calibration with precision.

“You can buy great equipment anywhere,” Jon explains. “But if you can’t operate it easily, what’s the point?” Home automation doesn’t have to happen all at once. Reel Time takes a thoughtful, phased approach, designing systems that grow alongside homeowners’ needs. Proper infrastructure can be installed during construction or remodeling, preventing costly retrofits later

Service That Stays In an era of online ordering and outsourced installations, Reel Time’s relationship-driven approach stands apart. From initial design to long-term support, their team remains accessible. Systems are documented. Clients are trained thoroughly. Adjustments and upgrades are handled by professionals who know the project intimately. The result isn’t simply technology. It’s ease. It’s atmosphere. It’s stepping into your backyard and feeling like everything just works — beautifully, intuitively, and exactly as it should.

BUILT ON QUALITY, CRAFTSMANSHIP AND FAMILY VALUES But for Taherian, remodeling isn't simply about choosing beautiful finishes.

LUXE REMODELING: Where Beautiful Design Meets a Better Way to Remodel

By Jody Robinson

T

here’s something exciting about remodeling a home. It’s the promise of a fresh beginning— the chance to take a space that no longer quite works and transform it into something beautiful, functional and distinctly your own.

For Ben Taherian, owner of Mission Viejo-based Luxe Remodeling, making that transformation a positive experience is just as important as the finished product. With 25 years in the remodeling and construction industry, Taherian has built his approach around experience, craftsmanship and attention to detail. Today, Luxe Remodeling brings those principles together as a family-owned, one-stop-shop designbuild company, guiding homeowners from the initial design through construction. “Remodeling is a significant investment, and homeowners deserve a team they can trust,” says Taherian. “We want to make the process as seamless as possible while delivering quality that people can see and feel for years to come.” 20

A COMPLETE APPROACH TO REMODELING That comprehensive approach is one of Luxe Remodeling’s defining strengths. Rather than leaving homeowners to coordinate a collection of contractors, the company handles a broad range of remodeling needs under one roof. Its services include kitchen and bathroom remodeling, flooring, custom cabinetry, countertops, painting, wallpaper, plumbing and re-piping, electrical work, glass railings, and wrought-iron doors and railings. The company works on both residential and commercial projects throughout Orange County. In the kitchen, that might mean a thoughtfully redesigned layout, custom cabinetry and upgraded finishes. In the bathroom, it can encompass everything from a new shower and waterproofing to tile, lighting, fixtures and custom storage. Flooring options range from hardwood and tile to luxury vinyl, stone and carpet, with installation and refinishing services available.

“Quality is in the details,” he says. “We believe in using high-quality materials and experienced workmanship because the goal isn't just to make a space look good. It needs to be built to last.” That philosophy is personal. Taherian’s family has been involved in remodeling and construction for many years, and he sees that history as an important part of Luxe Remodeling’s identity. “We’re a family business, and we take pride in what we put our name on,” he says. “Exceptional craftsmanship, honesty and attention to detail are values we carry into every project.” For homeowners considering a renovation, the result is a partnership designed to bring vision, craftsmanship and practicality together—creating spaces that not only look beautiful today, but continue to feel like home for years to come.

Don’t Risk Hiring Unlicensed Tradesmen! • Hire a Licensed Contractor with Workers Compensation Insurance!! • Ask to see the Contractors License Card and Worker’s Comp Certificate! If they can’t produce these items, send them on their way. By Joe Ronstadt, Sr. Hiring a legitimate licensed contractor gives you protection against the following:

INJURIES • Power Saws: Using Power saws while standing on step ladders and precariously balancing on beams is extremely dangerous! • Lifting Heavy Beams: Everyone knows lifting too much is hazardous. Most people do not realize how heavy these beams are. Back injuries are common. • Ladders and power tools: The risk of falling is real but adding in the use of large saws and drills, etc. only compound’s the danger.

NO RECOURSE if they are not licensed. What is your recourse if things don’t go as expected, like injury or poor workmanship? Who do you call? • No Contractor’s State License Board can help you. • No contractor’s Bond can help you. • What if they don’t finish the job and won’t return your calls? • Just because a friend or neighbor recommended an unlicensed individual posing as a contractor doesn’t mean that you’ll have the same experience.

COST • Many times, unlicensed individuals are more expensive or equal to the legal licensed contractors. If you don’t compare, you don’t know. For more info on our safety techniques and much more, see our website patiocoversoc.com. 22

HOW TO HIRE A LICENSED CONTRACTOR The starting point is checking all the normal credentials like CSLB license, insurance and references. But equally important is determining whether they are a good craftsman or not. If they are merely following industry standards of which have many flaws, they are falling short.

Some of the red flags that I see in advertising are as follows: • No License or Workers Compensation insurance. • Advertising for a trade that they are not properly licensed for. See (cslb. ca.gov). • False reviews. • False or exaggerated claims, i.e. years in business. • Using terms like: “combined years of experience.” The aggregate years of experience, of multiple individuals is irrelevant (example: when they say “Together, Smith & Jones have a combined experience of 50 years”). • The most important credential is not how many years, but the quality of craftsmanship. If a contractor uses poor techniques, the quantity of years is irrelevant.

TIP 2: Make sure they have workers compensation insurance!!! • Injuries are common in the construction industry. • Dangerous tools such as large saws are in use. • The use of ladders and heavy lifting is required. • With so many injury lawyers advertising on bill boards and such, injury fraud is a legitimate concern. A worker can fake an injury and an injury Attorney will sue the contractor and also the property owner.

TIP 3: The Lower the License Number, The Longer in Business. • Our License, established in 1984, Check Our License #452151 at (cslb. ca.gov)

Joe Ronstadt, Sr.

TIP 1: Don’t hire a drifter with no address! Look for the following: Make sure that you have enough information in case you need to sue. • Contractor’s license, address, legitimate company name, reviews, etc...

Four Generations Deep:

How South County Pools Keeps Orange County Swimming Smoothly By Jody Robinson

For as long as we’ve lived in South County, our pool has been more than a backyard feature—it’s where weekends unfold, where friends gather, where summer seems to linger just a little longer.

A

nd for several years now, the quiet constant behind that enjoyment has been South County Pools. As a longtime weekly service client, I can say without hesitation that the care of our pool has been exceptional. Yes, the water is always balanced. Yes, the equipment runs smoothly. But what stands out most is the reliability, the communication, and the unmistakable sense that someone genuinely takes pride in the work being done.

A Legacy Built on Family Owned and operated by Sean Kosky, the company has served Orange County for more than a decade— but the family’s roots in the industry stretch back four generations. It began with Sean’s grandfather, Orville, who worked as a pool professional throughout the 1950s, ’60s, and ’70s. That knowledge was passed from father to son, and today the fourth generation remains actively involved.

What started as a family operation has grown into a comprehensive pool company offering residential and commercial construction, weekly pool and spa maintenance, equipment repair and replacement, energyefficient upgrades, and complete remodels. Everything is handled inhouse—a detail that speaks volumes about quality control and consistency.

Service That Shows Up For families like mine, what truly sets this company apart is how they operate. “Our business was built on family values, and that foundation still guides how we operate today,” Sean shares. “We believe the customer always comes first. We show up when we say we will, do the job thoroughly, and communicate honestly with our clients.” As a customer, I see that philosophy play out week after week. Technicians are extensively trained before managing their own routes. The

company uses modern service software that provides real-time updates after each visit, including water chemistry readings and exactly what was added. That level of transparency is reassuring—especially when you’re trusting someone with a significant investment. Sean himself grew up immersed in the industry, gaining handson experience with pool systems, equipment, and customer service from an early age. Over time, that foundation evolved into leading teams, overseeing complex builds and remodels, and upholding the standards set by the generations before him. “A pool is a major investment, and working with a company that truly cares makes all the difference,” he says. “When you focus on doing quality work and building trust, everything else falls into place.” From my perspective, that isn’t just talk. South County Pools has made pool ownership feel effortless. And that peace of mind allows us to simply enjoy it—exactly as it should be.

Making Holiday Memories at By Jody Robinson There are certain holiday traditions that become part of your family’s story, and for us, visiting Universal Studios Hollywood during the most wonderful time of the year has always been one of them. What began when our kids were little has grown into a tradition we still look forward to today − even now that they’re teenagers. And while the kids may have grown up, the magic of the season never seems to get old. From the moment we step into the park, the festive décor, familiar characters and holiday music remind us why we keep coming back. This year, Universal Studios Hollywood is bringing back its beloved seasonal celebrations, along with some exciting new touches, from November 21 through January 3.

A LITTLE WHOVILLE MAGIC One of our favorite holiday stops is always Grinchmas, where Universal Plaza transforms into a whimsical Whoville celebration. The centerpiece is a spectacular 65-foot Christmas tree adorned with colorful ornaments and thousands of twinkling LED lights. We can’t resist the festive atmosphere, especially the nightly tree-lighting ceremony, complete with a magical snowfall. Meeting the Grinch, his loyal sidekick Max and the cheerful Whos is part of 36

the fun, while holiday treats, ornament decorating and sending postcards to the Grinch add a little extra Christmas spirit.

THE MINIONS GET MERRY New this year, Illumination’s Merry Minions are bringing their own brand of holiday mischief to Minion Land. With festive decorations, seasonal treats at Minion Cafe and opportunities to meet the Minions dressed for the holidays, this cheerful addition is sure to be a hit with kids − and those of us who are still kids at heart.

A WIZARDING WORLD OF HOLIDAY WONDER For a completely different kind of holiday magic, we love wandering through Hogsmeade in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Snowcapped rooftops, glowing lights and festive garlands make the village feel straight out of a Christmas story. We’ll be keeping an eye out for seasonal performances by the Frog Choir and, of course, a cup of hot Butterbeer. As evening falls, The Magic of Christmas at Hogwarts Castle transforms the iconic landmark with dazzling lights and memorable music from the films.

A LITTLE NINTENDO HOLIDAY CHEER Even the Mushroom Kingdom gets into the spirit of the season. At SUPER NINTENDO WORLD, Mario and Luigi snowmen greet visitors beside a holiday tree topped with a shining Super Star. It’s a playful seasonal touch that makes this colorful land even more fun to explore. Before heading home, we plan to make time for Universal CityWalk, where a 40-foot Christmas tree illuminated by more than 200,000 LED lights sets the scene for an evening stroll, shopping and live entertainment. As our family tradition continues to evolve with the kids, one thing remains the same: the holidays are about making memories together. And at Universal Studios Hollywood, there’s always another little bit of magic waiting around the corner. Holidays at Universal Studios Hollywood run daily November 21, 2026, through January 3, 2027, and are included with theme park admission. For tickets and details, visit UniversalStudiosHollywood.com

troll down Old Mission Road on a golden SoCal afternoon and there it is: a place where historic allure dances with modern flair, where oak-shaded patios beckon and the mission bells faintly echo in the distance. Nestled directly across from Mission San Juan Capistrano — the jewel of Orange County’s heritage — Tavern at the Mission is more than a restaurant; it’s a community hub, a neighborhood tavern with a heart as warm as its famed buttermilk fried chicken. Owned and operated by local chef/ restaurateur David Wilhelm the Tavern blends old-world comfort and contemporary vibrance. The chandelier-lit dining room, centered around a welcoming fireplace, exudes an inviting glow, perfect for cozy dinners or celebratory gatherings. Outside, the tree-covered, pet-friendly patio offers arguably one of the most captivating alfresco dining settings in South County, resplendent with views of the iconic Mission and the hint of Spanish colonial charm in the air. Artfully designed to echo San Juan Capistrano’s equestrian and vaquero traditions, the Tumbleweed Bar is a standout — where handcrafted cocktails and local wines pair perfectly with 38

the restaurant’s rustic-meets-refined aesthetic…check out the real Tumbleweed chandeliers At its core, Tavern at the Mission serves up elevated comfort food with a chef’s touch: signature classics like the Famous Buttermilk Fried Chicken, French 75’s Onion Soup and Creole Shrimp & Grits deliver depth of flavor and nostalgia. Guest favorites include Prime Angus Sirloin Cheeseburger (Voted Best in the City 2 years running) Prime Rib dip sandwich, Artisanal flatbreads, Fish & Chips, and the 16-ounce ‘Cowboy Ribeye Steak’ topped with spicy butter and crispy onions, and Belgian Chocolate Souffle baked to order — each plate a testament to the kitchen’s creativity and quality. Whether you’re seeking a relaxed lunch or brunch in the sunshine or a refined dinner under the Mission’s glow, the menu’s breadth — from seafood to hearty tavern favorites — ensures there’s something for every palate. More than a place to dine, Tavern at the Mission has earned its place in the rhythm of local life. Whether it’s the clink of glasses on Monday night, the laughter drifting from the patio under twinkling lights, or the laid-back Sunday serenade, it captures the essence of this historic town — spirited, warm, and full of character.

What truly sets Tavern at the Mission apart is its weekly rotation of lively offerings, turning casual nights into cherished traditions: Happy Hour all Night on Monday • Cowboy Taco Tuesdays — From 4:00 until closing A selection of large, ala carte Tacos starting at $6 served on Cowboy Butter spiced Blue Corn Tortillas with Avocado and Signature firegrilled Salsa Quemada • Stanley Tucci Wednesdays — A weekly offering of Tuscan and Tucci inspired Italian comfort food dishes as interpreted by Chef Wilhelm including Tucci’s famous ‘Pasta all Nerano’ that he said ‘changed my life’ all enjoyed by an all Italian music playlist • Cowboy Night Thursdays — This is where Western charm truly comes alive. Don your favorite cowboy hat and mosey into the Tumbleweed Bar & Patio for halfprice select beers, well drinks and wines by the glass. Country and western tunes set the soundtrack while Tavern’s famed Cowboy Burger takes center stage. • Jazzy Sunday Brunch — One of the most cherished weekend rituals: brunch on the sun-dappled patio with smooth jazz by local legend Mike Hamilton, paired with Bloody Marys, mimosas and indulgent brunch classics like Fried Chicken & Waffles, Cinnamon French toast or Prime Rib Hash. In a region brimming with culinary options, Tavern at the Mission stands out as a destination where history, hospitality, and superb cuisine come together, inviting both locals and visitors to pull up a chair and stay awhile.

Holiday Catering with Mediterranean Flair:

Olive Pit Grill in Huntington Beach By Jody Robinson

I

’ve always been a huge fan of the vibrant, authentic flavors of Mediterranean cuisine with a sincere appreciation for fresh ingredients, traditional recipes, and the simple joy of sharing exceptional food. Short of traveling to Greece … for a dining experience that is both authentic and wonderfully satisfying closer to home? Olive Pit Grill in Huntington Beach more than delivers. Mediterranean food is about more than just a meal; it’s about

bringing people together over colorful spreads, savory grilled specialties, bright herbs, and the kind of dishes that invite everyone to dig in and enjoy. It’s the kind of food that feels equally at home at a casual lunch, a family gathering, or a festive celebration.

Make Holiday Entertaining Easy with Catering Trays And with the holiday season approaching, I’m already thinking beyond dining out. Between upcoming holiday parties, family celebrations, and professional networking events, my calendar is filling quickly. That’s why Olive Pit Grill has made my shortlist for holiday catering. One of the best ways to bring Mediterranean flavor to your next gathering is by picking up catering trays. Rather than spending hours in the kitchen preparing food for a crowd, I can envision creating an inviting spread with Mediterranean favorites that guests can share and enjoy. Ca-

40

I also love the versatility of Mediterranean cuisine for entertaining. Its variety offers something for different tastes, and the colorful presentation creates a welcoming table without requiring elaborate decorations or complicated preparations. For business events especially, a generous, flavorful spread encourages conversation and gives guests something memorable to enjoy. This year, I’m looking for ways to make entertaining feel effortless without sacrificing quality. Olive Pit Grill offers an appealing solution: delicious Mediterranean-inspired food, a relaxed and approachable atmosphere, and a catering option worth considering when feeding a group. For anyone looking to add a little Mediterranean flair to their next celebration, Olive Pit Grill deserves a place on the holiday catering list. Sometimes, the best part of entertaining is knowing the food will be something everyone remembers—and that you can enjoy the party, too.

Insurance 101 Services Medicare options are complicated. Understanding them shouldn’t be.

Medicare Annual Enrollment Period This Annual Enrollment Period is unprecedented for many reasons.

Multiple plans are leaving the Medicare Advantage plan program for various reasons. It’s your responsibility to make sure you’re aware of what is happening to your plan for next year. This pertains only to Medicare Prescription drug plans and Medicare Advantage plans such as HMO’s and PPO’s. If you don’t pay attention you may find yourself without a plan for the new year. When a plan exits for the next plan year you have until 12/31 (not 12/7 as with the deadline for the annual enrollment period) to enroll in a new plan for the upcoming year that will have a January 1st effective date, meaning no lapse in coverage for you.

I do not offer every plan available in your area. Currently I represent 5 organizations which offer 36 products in your area. Please contact Medicare.gov, 1 800 MEDICARE, or your local State Health Insurance Program to get information on all of your options.

Regarding Medicare Advantage plans that are ending for 2027. If you’re on an HMO that is ending, the solution is straightforward. What is your current medical group and what insurance companies have a contract with them (and hopefully for years to come) Once that’s established, what plan offers the best benefits. I’m talking about the premium, co-pays, and the out-of-pocket maximums. For those of you on Medicare Advantage PPO’s, all of your doctors most likely won’t line up in one network so you have decisions to make. To maintain all of your doctors and continue living a “no-referral” life means the added expense of a Medicare Supplement plan and a Medicare Prescription drug plan. Your acceptance is guaranteed because you’re losing your current plan next year. The biggest take-away that I can give you for making sure you don’t end up without coverage next year is to read your annual notice of change and don’t try to maneuver finding a new plan without the help of a licensed Medicare insurance broker that specializes in Orange County plans. Medicare Advantage plans vary by county. In my agency I have 3 very well qualified licensed Medicare Insurance brokers that specialize in Orange County. We are all located in the same building in 3 offices in San Juan Capistrano. Some of my brokers also will come to you if you’re no longer able or comfortable driving. 47

A Second Chance— and a Simple Solution

Solo Beauty’s back applicator brings independence to an everyday routine By Jody Robinson

For Kathe D’Alfonso, a simple beauty routine became much more than a business idea. It became a mission rooted in gratitude, ingenuity and a desire to help others.

A

t 25, D’Alfonso visited a dermatologist after her mother insisted a large black mole looked suspicious. The mole was removed and initially deemed benign. Three weeks later, the doctor’s office called with startling news: the wrong report had been reviewed. D’Alfonso actually had Stage 3 malignant melanoma. “I believe that was a second chance of life,” she says. After surgery and the worry of whether the cancer had been completely removed, D’Alfonso received the allclear on Mother’s Day 31 years ago. The scar remains a daily reminder of what she survived.

She went on to build Expozures, an embroidery, design and printing business that remains strong today. Then, about four years ago, another idea took shape—literally.

The product’s first real test came at a local farmers market. “I had no idea who would be interested in my back applicator, but I knew how much I loved it,” she says. The response surprised her. Customers with arthritis, multiple sclerosis, shoulder limitations and physical therapy needs began purchasing Solo Beauty. People who lived alone found it especially useful. “I was so happy that my product was helping so many people,” D’Alfonso says. Today, Solo Beauty is a true grassroots operation, made in New York with help from her husband, who cuts the templates. D’Alfonso handles orders herself and often calls customers afterward to see how they’re doing.

D’Alfonso wanted an easier way to apply lotion to her own back. “I Kathe D’Alfonso, was excited with an idea Founder for a back applicator that And the most satisfying would make putting your feedback? cremation, a memorial service, or a celebration of life, documenting those preferences in advance helps ensure their wishes are honored. It also gives families confidence that they're carrying out those wishes during an emotional time.

Finding Peace of Mind Through Planning By Sherre Cook, Prearrangement Advisor, Anubis Cremations

Talking about end-of-life planning isn’t something most people look forward to, but after more than 13 years helping families navigate these decisions, I’ve learned that planning ahead is one of the greatest gifts we can leave our loved ones.

W

hen someone passes away without a plan, family members are often faced with making important decisions while grieving. Preplanning removes much of that uncertainty by documenting personal wishes in advance, allowing families to focus on supporting one another instead of wondering what their loved one would have wanted.

At Anubis Cremations, families can choose between both methods, allowing them to select the option that best aligns with their personal beliefs, environmental values, and final wishes. As awareness of sustainability continues to grow, many people appreciate having meaningful choices that reflect both compassion and environmental stewardship.

Understanding Today's Cremation Options

Preplanning also provides an opportunity to personalize arrangements. Whether someone prefers a simple

Many people don't realize how much the funeral profession has evolved. Cremation has become an increasingly popular choice, and families today have more options than ever before to personalize arrangements while reflecting their values. In addition to low-emission traditional cremation, newer technologies have introduced water-based cremation, also known as alkaline hydrolysis. This process uses water, gentle heat, and naturally occurring alkaline compounds to accelerate the natural process of returning the body to its elemental form. It produces significantly fewer emissions than flame-based cremation, making it an appealing choice for individuals seeking a more environmentally conscious option. 50

Planning Is a Gift to Those You Love Another advantage of preplanning is financial preparedness. Making arrangements ahead of time allows families to better understand costs, explore available options, and reduce the financial stress that often accompanies an unexpected loss. One misconception I hear frequently is that preplanning is only for older adults. In reality, it's an important part of responsible life planning at any age—much like creating a will or advance healthcare directive. None of us knows what the future holds, but we can make thoughtful decisions today that will ease the burden on those we love tomorrow. The most rewarding part of my work is helping people realize these conversations don't have to be uncomfortable. They can be empowering. Planning ahead provides peace of mind, knowing your wishes will be honored and your family won't have to make difficult decisions alone. While no plan can lessen the grief of losing someone we love, thoughtful preparation can make one of life's most challenging moments a little easier, giving families the freedom to focus on what matters most: remembering, healing, and celebrating a life well lived. Sherre Cook is a Prearrangement Advisor with Anubis Cremations and has more than 13 years of experience helping families navigate end-of-life planning with compassion, education, and personalized guidance.

If you don’t have a wine fridge, just aim for a cool, steady spot away from sunlight and temperature swings— think closet, basement, or even a quiet corner. Avoid the kitchen (it gets too warm) and steer clear of anywhere near a heater or sunny window. Bottom line: Consistency is more important than obsessing over the exact number. If your wine isn’t baking or freezing, you’re doing just fine.

Ask a SOMM A good sommelier is a helper: a guide to finding the best wine for your food and experience. For this month’s installment, we again approached South County-based sommelier Micah Sampson to address a few frequently asked questions. Q Do I really need a wine fridge, or is a regular refrigerator okay? A If you’re just keeping a bottle or

two on hand for pizza night or the occasional celebration, your regular fridge is totally fine for short-term storage. Just don’t let that Sauvignon Blanc get lost behind the takeout for months! For reds, you actually don’t need to keep them in the fridge at all. If you’re drinking them within a few weeks, just stash the bottles in a cool, dark spot—like a closet corner—and they’ll be perfectly happy. No fancy equipment required. But if you’re planning to save bottles for more than a few weeks—especially reds, or anything you want to age—a wine fridge is a worthwhile upgrade. Wine fridges keep bottles at a steady, wine-friendly temperature (usually 50–60°F), with the right humidity and less vibration. Regular fridges are colder (great for milk, not for Merlot) and can dry out corks over time, which isn’t ideal for wine. 52

Bottom line: For casual sipping, your fridge (or closet!) works in a pinch. If you’re building a collection or want your wine to taste its best longterm, a wine fridge is the way to go. Most important? Don’t overthink it— just enjoy your next glass!

Q What’s the ideal temperature to store wine at home? A The sweet spot for storing wine at home is between 50 and 60°F (10–16°C). Reds tend to like a little bit warmer temperatures—anywhere between 55 and 62°F—while whites prefer it a touch cooler, around 45 to 55°F. That’s if you’re planning on serving them almost right away. To make life simple, you can store almost any wine at 52 to 55°F. The reds will just need about 10 to 15 minutes at room temperature to warm up before serving, and the whites might want to spend 10 to 15 minutes in a regular fridge to chill down a bit more.

Q Does wine have to be stored on its side—and why? A If your wine has a cork, storing it

on its side is a classic move—and for good reason. Keeping the bottle sideways helps keep the cork moist, which prevents it from drying out and letting air sneak into the bottle (the sworn enemy of fresh wine).

If the cork dries out, it can shrink and let oxygen in, which speeds up aging and can spoil the wine. A little contact with the wine keeps the cork swollen and airtight. If your wine has a screw cap or synthetic cork, you can store it upright with no worries. Those closures don’t rely on moisture to keep a seal. But if you’re not sure, sideways is always a safe bet. Bottom line: Sideways for corks, upright is fine for screw caps. If you want to impress your friends, just toss out a line about “proper cork hydration”—and you’ll sound like a pro.

This Annual

MEDICARE Enrollment Period Is Unprecedented

By Stephanie Frisch

T

his Annual Enrollment Period is unprecedented for several reasons. Multiple plans are leaving the Medicare Advantage program, while many healthcare systems are still negotiating contracts with insurance companies for 2027 and beyond. The deadline for those negotiations is December 31, 2026. This isn’t a “doom and gloom” proclamation—it’s a call to attention. It’s your responsibility to understand what is happening to your Medicare plan for next year. This applies to Medicare Prescription Drug Plans and Medicare Advantage plans, including HMOs and PPOs. In my article last month, I discussed your Annual Notice of Change, which should have arrived by the end of September by mail or email if you opted for paperless communication. Please read it carefully. If your plan is ending for 2027, you could find yourself without coverage unless you take action.

If Your Prescription Drug Plan Is Ending Medicare drug plans have been ending over the past several years. In my educated opinion, the Inflation Reduction Act has played a major role as insurers face increasing costs. Unfortunately, many insurance companies have also stopped compensating brokers for helping individuals enroll in their remaining prescription drug plans. That makes choosing the right drug plan especially challenging for those 54

with a Medicare Supplement, since your Supplement benefits don’t change. Your Part D prescription plan, however, could be ending or your premium could increase. To compare 2027 drug plans, create an account at Medicare.gov and enter your current medications. The site will show available plans, with the least expensive option appearing below your current plan. If your current plan remains the best option, you can allow it to automatically renew. If you need to change plans, select “enroll” and follow the instructions. If you need assistance, call Medicare at 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-6334227) or contact a prescription drug company directly through Medicare. gov.

If Your Medicare Advantage Plan Is Ending If you’re enrolled in an HMO that is ending, determine which insurance companies have contracts with your current medical group. Then compare plans based on premiums, copays and out-of-pocket maximums. Don’t focus too heavily on the extra “bells and whistles” you’ve grown accustomed to; those benefits are often the first reduced or eliminated.

For those in a Medicare Advantage PPO that isn’t returning in 2027, the decision is more complicated. Your doctors may not all participate in the same network. Maintaining all your physicians while continuing a no-referral lifestyle may mean moving to a Medicare Supplement combined with a prescription drug plan. The good news is that because you’re losing your current plan, acceptance into a Medicare Supplement is guaranteed.

Don’t Wait to Take Action The biggest takeaway is simple: read your Annual Notice of Change and don’t try to navigate a plan change alone. Medicare Advantage plans vary by county, so work with a licensed Medicare insurance broker who specializes in Orange County rather than relying on a national “1800” Medicare specialist. My agency has three highly qualified, licensed Medicare insurance brokers specializing in Orange County. We’re located in three offices within the same building in San Juan Capistrano, and some brokers can come to you if you’re no longer comfortable driving. I won’t personally be assisting new clients during this enrollment period—I’ll be helping hundreds of my existing clients losing coverage in 2027. However, if you call my office and leave a brief message explaining your situation, I’ll route your information to one of my agency brokers, with the goal of having them return your call within 48 hours. The important thing is to pay attention, understand your options and make sure you have coverage in place for January 1, 2027.

Stephanie Frisch is the owner of Insurance 101 and is an independent insurance broker dedicated to helping others make “educated decisions” about their insurance choices when it comes to Medicare. For answers to your questions, or no-fee consultation, call 949-292-4958.
