Are you on track to save $1 million or more for retirement? If you are 50 or younger, you may need that much in savings to generate the kind of retirement income you prefer.
Personal finance website NerdWallet recently did some math concerning this very objective. What kind of sustained savings effort would a 30-year-old with nothing invested need to make to amass $1 million in retirement savings by age 67, assuming a consistent 6% annual return? (Keep in mind, a tax-advantaged retirement account is not the only potential source of retirement savings.)1
According to NerdWallet’s projection, a 30-year-old earning $40,000 a year would have to set aside 18.3% of each paycheck toward that goal. The percentage drops to 12.2% for a 30-year-old earning $60,000 annually, and 9.2% a year for a 30-year-old with an $80,000 salary.1
Salaries are not frozen across a lifetime of working, of course – but this simple math denotes the initial effort a millennial may want to make. A general rule of thumb is that you should direct 10-15% of each paycheck into retirement savings.1
You must take some risk as you save for the future. Some people are afraid of Wall Street and reluctant to invest in equities; they wish they could just save for retirement through a bank account or in an investment vehicle with minimal risk.
For most people, this approach is not realistic. The earlier you start, the more compounding potential you have. Take the hypothetical example of a 25-year-old who starts investing just $200 a month in equities via a tax-advantaged retirement account. The investments earn 8% a year. That 25-year-old is positioned to have $622,000 in that account by age 65. So, even a little invested per month might help a young adult make considerable progress toward a retirement savings objective.2
While some people take too little risk when they invest, others simply invest too little. There are people in their forties and fifties who have very large cash positions – over $100,000 in deposit accounts. Their bank accounts are almost as large as their investment accounts.
They are taking another kind of risk: the risk of having too much money on the sidelines. Putting an extra $10,000 –just to throw out a figure – into retirement savings at age 45 or 50 could make a real difference. Just using the Rule of 72 (Google this phrase if it is new to you), at an 8% annual return, that $10,000 would double in just nine years;

further growth and compounding would come after that, becoming more dramatic with time.2
Having a lot of cash in the bank is wonderful, but there are times when an emergency fund is larger than it may need to be. Some of that money might be better off in a taxadvantaged retirement account, especially if a household is behind on retirement saving.

There is a marked difference between a capable contractor, and the near-comical profile of an incapable one. Akin to the often long-winded and dry jokes about terrible lawyers, the myriad tales on home-improvement horror populate many a family’s dinner time storytelling. Tipping the scales in favor of customer service you remember in rosy hues is a feat. One that GM Pacific Remodeling has been leaning on for the past 16 years: building their remarkable reputation from the ground up.
Gil Moscovich grew up in the business. “My father was a framing foundation specialist, and my mom was a plans drawer - way before the autocad software was in use.” As a second-generation contractor in the business, GM prides itself on being straightforward with their clients. The way they are with their own family. “I didn’t want to do business the way most companies do it - slapdash, haphazard. My employees are trained to be extremely customer service oriented, taking pride in the company’s reputation, and taking care of each project as if we are working on my own house.” Providing remodeling services from kitchen to room additions, GM Pacific Pro is dedicated to offering the best prices on the mar-
ket for any kind of construction you might need.
Design, budgeting, and execution: all under one sturdy roof. No minimum job cost, and free consultation continue to set Gil and his family business apart from the rest. “I am constantly reachable, and value clear communication. None of our pricing is a surprise, and we’re not going to jump up in cost while we’re on a job. We offer the highest level of workmanship and materials”, and their customer testimonials speak to a level of effort and care missing in most of the industry. A client based in San Diego mentioned even that Gil and his team “cleaned up well at the end of the day”. A trait unheard of in construction. In fact, I just had to change a tire on my car this past week from construction on a neighbor’s house: and a slew of nails left in the street.
With satisfied clients from Lakewood to San Diego, it is no wonder that Gil and his team are finding success in the field. Word of mouth is a powerful thing when it comes to taking care of one’s home. Finding someone you trust to take on what can occasionally be a massive undertaking, from someone you trust, is the best case scenario. And finding countless re-
views online noting that “everything was perfect”, “I’m extremely happy with the job”, “everybody was really easy to work with”, is a close second.
Whether you need a bathroom redone, new paint, pavers for your driveway or back patio, windows, garage doors, stucco, heating, plastering, or plumbing work, Gil and his team at GM are up to the task. Specializing as well in remodeling for the disabled, no job is too complex for the team to handle. In a world where folks can barely make time to all sit down together under one roof, spending unnecessary time to find a contractor to fix that roof just seems excessive. And aggravating. Let GM Pacific Pro step in, take care of your house as if it were their own, and leave you to bask in the rosy glow of a home project well done.

One of my girlfriends has incredibly long wavy locks, that almost always look like she just rolled out of a Roxy cover shoot. Another just chopped all off her hair so her almost one-year-old can’t get a massive (and pain-

ful) handful anymore. I want one of those braids you see on Pinterest but can never quite achieve at home in the bathroom. Since The Blow Down doesn’t just have a prescribed set of hairstyles, their vibe is incredibly individualized and edgy.
“We approach each customer as an individual and promote creativity catered to that customer’s particular style,” says Rene. “We have an inspiration board like so many of our clients, and we change it regularly to keep the creative wheels turning: in your minds and ours.”
For bridal parties, a girls’ night out or anytime you and your friends want to look exceptionally fabulous, book an appointment (walk-ins are also welcome) at The Blow Down, Huntington Beach’s premier blow dry and makeup bar. Owner Rene Agee will share her philosophy that “getting ready for the party should be part of the party,” and she isn’t over-promising.

The stylists at The Blow Down don’t just stop with hair. Makeup is part of the party too, and with everything from false eyelashes to “The Full Frontal” (full face makeup), you can expect that from your shoulders up, you’ll be feeling like the belle of the ball. The team is mobile too, which means you can book them for day-of makeup and hair on site at your wedding or event venue. There really is little more important than feeling relaxed the day of a big event- and finding a team dedicated to bringing their own lifestyle of fun while making clients feel beautiful cannot be overstated. “I wanted to combine my love of good music, great libations, and making folks feel like their best selves - this is a place where people can come and just want to hang out. It’s that fun to be here!” Staff come in on their days off, exchanging stories, new tips and tricks on the latest styles, and are always ready to welcome guests into the party.

Offering wine, beer, champagne, and a variety of other non-alcoholic beverages, The Blow Down is more than a hair salon, more than the local watering hole: more than a night out with your close girlfriends. “We want everyone to leave here wanting to come back.” I’ll be a sworn return customer, just for the scalp massage - and the rest of the a la carte options don’t disappoint either. That braid I want for a friend’s upcoming wedding? Clients can choose from a simple or customized option. Just need a wash? Just need a style? Done and done. The stylists can work with pre-existing extensions or add them on site. Bring your little ones along, and they can sit under a stylist too, for a wash, blow dry, and signature ‘do! If you can’t remember the last time you were pampered, and feel like the normal wash and dry just isn’t going to cut it, The Blow Down’s deep conditioning treatment is the best way to revitalize those tired tresses.
Girlfriends walk away from the experience with the perfect hair and makeup for their special event, but more than that, the feeling of truly being taken care of.

When one contemplates the term “health crisis,” images from the 1995 medical disaster movie Outbreak come to mind. Hazmat suits and quarantined children in terrifying plastic rooms. But the term is so much more than just the Hollywood scare tactics that have been built up around it. Alycemates, a yearling business, is working on eradicating a different health crisis entirely: that of isolation. ALYCEMates began when Jessica Yum (co-founder of its parent company, ALYCECare) recognized early on that senior isolation and loneliness were reaching epidemic proportions, with increasing numbers living alone at home, instead of in a vibrant, thriving family community, or assisted living facility. She began to realize that the need for companionship was more than just a simple relationship with a caregiver, or a neighbor next door, and Alycemates was born.
There is not a single business that does what Alycemates does. Jessica and her team are excited to offer the
community ALYCEMates has built to seniors in the program, “which has evolved greatly from ALYCECare, our home care agency. We bring seniors out of isolation through checkins, exclusive social outings, and of course, the most important part: their ALYCEMate roomate.” They wanted to create a unique program to alleviate the dangers of isolation without having to throw money at the problem. Home care often costs as much as $25/hour, which, for most folks living on their own at a more advanced age, is a steep going rate. Many individuals didn’t need round the clock care, and wouldn’t pay for it, putting themselves at risk then of falling off the social wagon, only to put them at higher risk of dying earlier. 45% higher, in fact. A staggering statistic, given that according to a 2010 study, that’s 15% more at risk than from excessive drinking, and 25% higher than obesity. 40% higher than losing years from air pollution.
By matching college students, recent graduates, and young adults with
seniors as roommates, they could in fact, solve two problems. Senior isolation, and the student debt and housing crisis facing our youth. Seniors would no longer have to live alone: they could be mentors and teachers. Share their stories and dispense wisdom. Students could alleviate the pressure on their pocketbooks, and help others to stay connected. But how exactly are students and seniors matched up?
“We visit a senior’s home and sit with them for an extended period of time to determine if they are a good fit,” says Jessica. “Participating seniors are typically in good health, have an extra room, live in a safe neighborhood, and are sociable. We then interview several candidates for ALYCEMates to determine which individual would be the best fit for the senior in terms of maturity, stability, personality, interests, etc. - a process which can take several weeks.”
Looking for candidates who also have a good sense of community, want to

give back, and are comfortable with seniors is no small feat. If they pass the preliminary round of checks, ALYCEMates balances out the equation with a thorough background check, reference check, and credit check. Select candidates get to meet with the senior in person to ensure the chemistry is there. “We’re looking for big-hearted candidates who truly want to be part of the program, and it’s usually very obvious when a candidate is primarily interested in saving money on rent.”
With studies showing that seniors living communally add as many as 1015 years to their lives, it’s no wonder that a business like Alycemates found its way into existence.
“If you are over 50 and have a spare bedroom, you can become a senior host. It’s as easy as that,” says Jessica. “Earn extra income, alleviate alone time, mentor a young person, make a life-long friend. The benefits are endless. Seniors can earn up to $500 a month through the program.” No hazmat suits, plastic-sheeted quarantine rooms, or reruns of Outbreak required.

The nature of gift purchasing has changed greatly since the advent of the internet. How has Absolutely Fabulous stayed above the fray and blossomed while the rest of the gift industry flounders?
“That’s easy,” responds Diane Silverstein, owner of the iconic Huntington Beach-based Absolutely Fabulous gift boutique, “quality, selection, price range, and ease of shopping.”
After many visits to her “absolutely fabulous” gift and décor shop, I would have to agree. “Plus – we ship world-wide, so you can mail your stuff right from here!”
While the internet excels at making home shopping the easiest experience, when you know exactly what you’re looking for, much of holiday gift-giving starts with “who is this for, and how much do I want to spend on them?” Absolutely Fabulous makes this type of shopping easy with their “you know the personality, we know the product” approach to holiday gift-giving. “You see,” Diane explains in her charming English accent, “we spend hours and hours searching for the best new products offered in

the gift industry. When our customers come in with their lists, we walk them around and point out options that our customers would never have found in an internet search.”
Diane is not kidding on that last point. The variety and uniqueness of products at Absolutely Fabulous is astounding: hand-made jewelry, Miche Bag purses (the ones where you just drop the “insides” of your purse into a new shell, rather than having to dump all of your stuff out!), $10 silk scarves, old-school shaving kits for men, a “Daddy’s Tool Bag” that includes diaper changing equipment, and instructional DVD, face mask and other funny

items, rare paintings by successful artists, large crystal chandeliers, crystal perfume bottles, stuffed animal baby bottle covers, piggy banks for kids, wedding party gifts, rare Disney art and collectibles, holiday-themed decor and gifts, Christmas decorations that range from very inexpensive bottle stoppers and tree decorations to 6-foot high collectible Santa dolls. Ab Fab really does cover the gamut of gifts for anyone: “from birth to death and everything in-between is our moniker” Diane proudly states. I tend to agree.
This holiday season, find out why Absolutely Fabulous is so appropriately-named. Connect with Diane and the crew at Absolutely Fabulous located at 6026 Warner Avenue in Huntington Beach, call (714) 842-1608 or visit www. absolutelyfabulous1.com

Depression does not discriminate based on your social standing, how much money you have in your bank account, your accomplishments. Even if there’s nothing but happy moments around you, why then do you still feel depressed?
Research has found that the brain out of balance and lack of harmony between the lobes could possibly lead to disorders such as depression, anxiety, insomnia and more. Many people turn to prescription medications in an attempt to address their symptoms, but ironically these same medications can possibly cause or perpetuate the afflictions we are expecting them to treat.
Brainwave Optimization is a unique highly scientific yet holistic approach. Over 120,000 people have successfully participated, and the number grows every day. What are they experiencing? We start with an intensive scientific evaluation of your brainwaves, using a very advanced computer program in the initial assessment. We determine where the imbalances and frequencies levels are in the initial assessment. We can then create a plan customized to your specific needs. Over the next 5 days, you can relax in our zero gravity chair while listening to audio feedback being created by your own brainwave frequencies and mirrored back through this advanced technology. This process can be viewed on our website,www.awokenlife. com, under “What is Brainwave optimization?
Have you ever heard someone say “just think positive, look at the bright side or just get over it” and think “easy for you to say?” Depression is a real thing and the answer can be as easy as relaxing for five days while having Brainwave Optimization at Awoken Life.
“The best part of this process was I was able to bring myself to a calm state and focus on me and smooth me over. I have been able to manage my high anxiety through the visualizations. I would highly recommend this to anyone,” says Awoken Life client Cheryl., San Clemente. “This technology may seem odd, but the more you look at it and understand it, the more it makes sense. If the brain is
out of balance, how can it communicate to the rest of the body? This is a more balanced way of doing things and more holistic. The value of doing brainwave optimization is huge! I spent a lot more money on a lot dumber things and with this, you aren’t a patient for life. You get help and then move on with your life. One amazing thing I discovered after my treatment was that I had even forgotten about the Rx of Xanax I had at home. I just felt no need anymore. I now live in a state of reality instead of a state of fear.”
Another Awoken Life client, Dana Point resident Vince adds “I cannot put this in to words how much this has changed my life. Struggles of alcohol dependency, depression, spelling and even my fear of heights suddenly became manageable. I went in to this a total skeptic and was made in to a believer. Thank you for giving me a life I never thought possible.”
Awoken Life is dedicated to helping people achieve their potential, through Brainwave Optimization, guided visualization and even hypnotherapy. It’s our goal to see you getting back to your life as soon as possible.

There are countless things to worry about in our world: Large and small, tangible and intangible - hurricanes, supervolcanoes, bills, hidden gluten in our food. the dryer eating socks mysteriously. The list is long, and often feels like it’s getting longer. Most folks are already a little apprehensive when it comes to going to the dentist, but the worry of tooth decay, gum disease and plaque can pile upon all the other worries

until the basic thought of leaving our homes becomes a little too much to handle.
Dental care, for most of us, is tough to get excited about. But we all go because the complications that can arise from not taking proper care of one’s teeth are enough to keep one up at night. Like most complications as we age, they are further complicated – by limited mobility, transportation issues and forgetfulness.
Busy caregivers are hard pressed to take residents in assisted-living facilities to dental appointments on a regular basis, and family members barely remember to schedule appointments for themselves. As an unfortunate result, the majority of the population that actually needs the most care is left to their own devices.
Dr. Charles Zahedi believes there is too much at stake to forget the residents of nursing homes and assisted living facilities when it came to their dental care. He first came up with this novice idea when he noticed the lack of elderly patients coming
for what he believed much needed attention. “Mobile Dental USA provides a full range of dental services at your place of residence (via a full size 40+ ft mobile dental clinic or mobile equipment for ‘concierge dentistry’ performed in a client’s home). Using state-of-the art equipment, Mobile Dental performs x-rays, cleanings, cavity treatment, dentures, and implants.” For those with missing teeth or denture wearers, Mobile Dental can work up their exclusive BoneLoss and Denture-Loss Prevention Programs because as Dr. Zahedi put it “a healthy smile is part of a healthy body and visiting a dentist has never been easier.”
Most folks could pinpoint exactly what it is about a shark that scares them. Or a tsunami. More likely than not, those same folks wouldn’t be able to articulate what it is about dental care that scares them, or the direct correlation between tooth replacement and malnutrition. Knowing more about certain things can help alleviate the fear - and being well informed about dental health can only bring us closer to a more balanced, healthy lifestyle. For these reasons and much more (that can’t be covered in this article) Mobile Dental USA is an accessible and educational concept, targeting its
efforts on Orange County’s aging population.
“It can be frustrating to eat certain foods or even to speak with confidence at times for those without stable dentures,” Dr. Zahedi says. “But most people don’t know that the trouble doesn’t stop there. Not replacing missing teeth prevents adequate food intake, resulting in a lack of proper nutrients and vitamins, leading to weight loss, and even other serious medical conditions.” Dr. Zahedi even advises those with dentures, without missing teeth, become more aware of their fit. The pressure of their removable
Not
replacing missing teeth results in the rapid loss of the precious jaw bone, inadequate food intake, weight loss and a cascade of serious medical conditions.

dentures on the jaw can result in the loss of that precious jaw bone. Mobile Dental USA is a pioneer, the first of its kind, with the ultimate goal of improving the standard of life for the elderlies of Orange County.
With the revolutionary Bone-Loss and Denture-Loss Programs, the good doctor’s team can assure residents who undergo the procedures that they will be done in an hour. No sutures required. No endless months of healing. “They can immediately start eating, and speak with confidence,” Dr. Zahedi notes - “it’s a phenomenal solution for residents that cannot have extensive surgery for other, non-related medical reasons. And it eliminates the cost of replacing lost removable dentures, which is essentially an ironclad guarantee for those associates suffering from memory-loss or impairment.”
Repeatedly recognized as a leader in his industry by his passion and knowledge for the health and wellness of older adults, Dr. Zahedi has been honored by the American Dental Association’s Burton Wasserman and Dental Clinics of North America to write a book chapter (pub. July 2016) entitled Special Care Dentistry: Treatment of Orally Handicapped Edentulous Older Adults Using Dental Implants.
In 2011, Dr. Zahedi addressed a different need: that of the dental care of impoverished and disabled veterans living in Southern California. His first non-profit, Oral Disability Rescue, was comprised of a small group of volunteer dentists and dental assistants who looked after their target population. Since then, the name has changed to Dentists for Veter-
ans (www.dentistsforveterans.org), to reflect their goals, and better call out the true needs of dentistry to the American population today. “Since its humble beginning in 2011, over $500,000 in dental services have been provided to veterans in need.” By eliminating pain and infection, which sometimes tend to be side effects of serving our county so valiantly, Dr. Zahedi is giving back to the community the best way he knows how – outstanding and convenient dental care.
When asked what prompted him to pursue this non-for-profit organization, Dr. Zahedi responded, “If I don’t do it, who will?” A noble question, rightly asked. Addressing the unknown worries of these disabled, or mobility impaired, or elderly populations is one thing. Bringing the care to their front door before they have a chance to worry? Another concept entirely. By bringing a complete dental care office to the community, Dr. Zahedi and his team are changing the way these residents look at dental care. Perhaps he can’t do anything about the super volcanoes, or what is and what isn’t gluten free, but he’ll rebuild your dental profile so it’s the least of your worries.

Dr. Charles Zahedi is a current UCLA School of Dentistry Faculty member and instructor and is practicing in Newport Beach with over 27 years of experience treating older adults and corporate employees. I write this article with two very interesting perspectives and viewpoints. Firstly, I am a urologist. I treat a lot of prostate cancer. In fact, I have one of the largest prostate cancer practices in the United States. I regularly see patients from all over our state, from other states and from countries throughout the world.
Secondly, I am a prostate cancer survivor. I was diagnosed with cancer late last year. In May of this year I underwent a urethral sparing HIFU procedure and I am now cancer free.
For many years, there has been a movement to not treat all prostate cancers. The reason is that there are many men whose cancer will never grow to the point where it will metastasize (spread to other parts of the body) or cause death. The movement to not treat has now expanded to not even diagnosing prostate cancer. The result is that there are now potentially millions of men with prostate cancer who either don’t know they have it or are allowing it to grow and spread.
Why has the movement to not treat grown? The answer is, quite simply, that the results of the two traditional treatments – radical surgery or radiation – can have significant, life changing side effects that negatively impact a person’s
daily quality of life. The worst one is permanent urinary leakage that requires constant use of absorbent pads or diapers. This occurs in 35% - 50% of treated men. The second dreaded side effect is erectile dysfunction (ED). The incidence of this varies depending upon the extent of cancer in the prostate but it’s safe to say that at least 50% of men lose the ability to have spontaneous erections. The unfortunate truth is that the newest surgical technique – robotically assisted laparoscopic surgery – has not changed these statistics to a significant degree.
Radiation is available in many forms. The most common ones are Protons, radioactive seeds (brachytherapy), high dose radioactive rods, gamma knife, conformal therapy and IMRT. Most will give a good result for 5-6 years but that’s when the recurrences start. The sad truth is that estimates are that up to 60% of patients will fail radiation treatment. A good example of this is our governor, Jerry Brown. Governor Brown’s prostate cancer was treated
with radiation in 2012. Now, newspapers report his cancer has re-occurred. While reports say he’ll have more radiation, that won’t cure his cancer. Firstly, he cannot have a significant amount of radiation because he’s already received close to the maximum allowable dose. Secondly, why would he have the same treatment that has already failed?
With all of this as background, here are my thoughts about what a patient should do. They are not just words from a doctor; they are words from someone who did what I’m about to say.
We need to understand that prostate cancer is CANCER. It is not necessarily a slow growing tumor located in the prostate. It has the potential to spread locally and obstruct the ureters that carry urine from our kidneys to the bladder. It has the potential to grow into the bladder and cause significant bleeding. It has the potential to metastasize to other areas. The most common site of metastasis is to the bones. These metastases are extremely painful. If the vertebral bodies that surround the spinal cord are affected paralysis can result. Once again, prostate cancer is CANCER!
As with any cancer, early diagnosis is the key to a successful treatment outcome. That’s why PSA testing is so important. That’s how my cancer was diagnosed. My prostate examination was completely normal. So was an MRI of my prostate. But my PSA was abnormal. Actually, the total PSA level was normal at 1.1. But the free PSA fraction (that’s the part of PSA not tied to proteins in your blood stream) was low. It should be more than 25%; mine was 18%. This is important – always request that your doctor order both a total and free PSA. If I had not had a free PSA my prostate cancer would not have been diagnosed and it would still be growing inside me.
The next step was a biopsy. Many people fear biopsies. It’s an uncomfortable procedure. There’s a chance of infection afterwards. But, with a properly done nerve block and proper antibiotic prophylaxis, the chance of pain or infection is minimal. Some men fear that a biopsy may spread cancer. While that’s never been documented after decades of biopsies of prostates and many other parts of our bodies (breast, lung, bone, lymph nodes, etc.), the obvious question is: what is the alternative? We cannot diagnose cancer without a biopsy. So, if you don’t have one, and you have cancer, you are allowing it to grow and spread. That makes no sense.
When my cancer was diagnosed I wanted it treated in a way that would not leave me with serious side effects. I wanted to be “whole” afterwards. That’s why I chose HIFU – High Intensity Focused Ultrasound. With HIFU, we finally have a treatment that can cure cancer with a markedly reduced potential for the side effects seen with surgery and dramatically fewer recurrences than radiation. Instead of the 35% - 50% incidence of urinary incontinence seen
after surgery there is a 3% chance with HIFU. Instead of a 50% or greater likelihood of ED HIFU has a 5% incidence.
In the weeks leading up to my treatment, I was surprisingly calm. I can honestly say that I never had a moment of fear, anger, panic or any of the other emotions that many of my patients have shared with me in over 30 years of treating this potentially lethal, terrible disease.
The reason for my attitude was that my cancer was diagnosed at the earliest possible stage. The odds were overwhelmingly likely that it would never return. That meant that I was in charge of my cancer instead of it being in charge of me. I was spared the fear that patients experience when they are diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer that can be extensive or aggressive and, potentially, not curable.
I was also calm because I had the utmost confidence in my doctor. Like me, he had been travelling to other countries for the past 10 years treating patients with HFIU. I knew he was experienced and that I was in good hands. .
On Tuesday, May 9, I had my HIFU treatment. I had worked a full day in my office the day before. The anesthesiologist gave me some oxygen to breathe as I drifted off to sleep. My procedure lasted about 3 hours. My HIFU doctor told me that the procedure went perfectly. That evening, I was at a urology dinner meeting enjoying a steak and a glass of wine. Other than some discomfort from a urinary catheter, I had no pain.
I arrived for my HIFU treatment with prostate cancer. Several months later my PSA is excellent and indicates that I am cancer free. I do not have the side effects of radical surgery. I did not go through weeks of radiation therapy wondering afterwards if I would be in the large group of men with recurrent cancer. I don’t wake up each day worrying whether or not I should have treatment for my prostate cancer. I am whole and back to a normal life. In fact, I was back to normal activities 3 days after my procedure.
The key to successful treatment of prostate cancer is to have it diagnosed at its earliest stage so treatments like HIFU are a viable option. I can tell you now, from my personal experience, that it’s the key to getting on with your life while leaving you whole.

compression stockings and socks are a travel essential
By Livia De Los Rios
Many people travel long distances and have to remain seated for two or three hours or even longer. They might not think much of it, but when movement is constrained, the blood circulation in the legs is restricted. This can contribute to heavy legs, leg pain and swollen feet and ankles.
Prolonged sitting is also a major risk factor for the development of phlebitis and Deep-vein Thrombosis (DVT). Deep-vein Thrombosis involves the formation of blood clots (thrombi) in the deep leg veins during prolonged inactivity. In some cases, blood clots can migrate to the lungs resulting in a pulmonary embolism.

When seated without moving for a few hours – whether by plane, train or automobilethe risk of DVT could be four times higher and can happen to anyone during travel, regardless of age, weight or lifestyle.
JOBST™ medical compression stockings and socks are a simple and comfortable way
to help avoid heavy, tired and achy legs and the swelling of feet and ankles.
Tips to reducing the discomfort and risks associated with prolonged inactivity:
• Wear comfortable clothing
• Drink plenty of fluids (avoid alcohol)
• Stand up and stretch several times during travel
• Wear gradient compression legwear
Unlike the products available at your local drugstore, JOBST™ medical compression stockings and socks are recommended by physicians for their clinically proven gradient compression benefit. Medical compression products reduce swelling and helps prevent the pooling of fluid in the venous or lymph systems. The stylish cotton blend dress socks and compression hose available today increase tissue pressure to help balance the flow of fluid across the capillaries of the limb.

The Orange Public Library & History Center in Orange, CA hosts a monthly program called Ukulele SOUP (Special Orange Ukulele Players) presented by Peggy Calvert who hosts several
other ukulele programs in the area. Ukulele SOUP is a group of ukulele players, meeting once a month to play, sing and share songs. All ages are welcome; ages 16 and under must be with an adult.
Each session starts with easier songs and progresses to more difficult songs. The room is set up with the chairs arranged in two concentric circles. This allows several of the more experienced players to assist new players with tuning their instruments, strumming techniques and chord changes. New songs to play are presented every month. Many of the songs are old songs that almost everyone has heard. Some songs are related to current events or the current season. To bring everyone in the group up to speed, chord charts of new songs are handed out to the beginners and to others who need them.
The first session of the year is on Saturday, January 20, 2018, from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM, in the Community Room. Feel free to arrive early and tune your instrument before everyone begins playing. Come and sing along if you don’t have a ukulele. Beginners are welcome. Please contact the Adult Reference Desk at (714) 288-2410 to learn more.

Historically, great change has been associated with fire. A great crucible, reforming lives beneath the purifying heat of flame. The sea however, with its unfathomable depths, hold a great mystery to the effects of change over time. After all, the phrase “sea change” originated from the power of the ocean to alter landscapes. Thanks to Shakespeare: an idiom that can cool the fan of flame, and still signify our lives taking shape in ways they would never have before, as we are reformed under the great heat or weight of tragedy.
John “Tripp” H. Smith, III and his wife Loretta are no strangers to that indescribable pressure. When their son Michael took his own life on November 10, 2007, their lives were
altered forever. Despite being a successful young man in his earlier life, Michael had “devolved” into an unrecognizable person as a result of his depression, and subsequent dependence on chemical substance to help self-medicate his problems. After his passing, bound to create something beautiful, Tripp and his close friend Dr. Richard Granese, MD, a well-respected Orange County psychiatrist joined together to found A Mission for Michael, Inc. to help remember Michael, and carry his legacy forward: helping others escape the ravages of drug and alcohol through a dual diagnosis treatment.
A Mission for Michael (AMFM) offers a structured answer to what can be a wildly volatile and fluid situation. After their 45-90 day treatment
program, patients transition to Sober Living and Outpatient: getting them back on their feet, refining that which is detrimental to their continued health and success. Based in South Orange County, AMFM programs are designed to treat individuals with co-occurring disorders. Dr. Granese notes “substance use disorders and mood and anxiety disorders that develop independently of intoxication, dependence and withdrawal are the most prevalent psychiatric disorders in the United States.” Helping to rebuild those individuals from foundation up helps ensure they will not relapse, and can dramatically assist in stabilizing their mental health illness. Operating the only recovery facility owned by a psychiatrist, Dr. Granese is doubly dedicated to tackling the issues he

has seen first hand, with more and more regularity.
When sources like Mental Health America state that the number of individuals affected by mental health illnesses outpaces the populations of both New York and Florida, lines are drawn in the sand. We can reach out and assist, or let more than 40 million Americans persist in their downward spiral, towards an outbreak of devastation that is greater than many of us would like to imagine. “AMFM is not a 12-step based program, but we believe the 12-steps are another relapse prevention tool. We have found that working them in conjunction with therapy, psychiatric care, family participation, and small group therapy sets the patient up for success.” Often, however, the roots that Dr. Granese and his team are trying to reach are buried in a mess of underlying psychological factors and trauma that drives physical and emotional addiction.
A unique way of approaching such trauma is the “step-down” feature offered through the program. The patient begins intensively - then steadily drops down to less intensive treatment as they progress. Continuing with their therapist and psychiatrist every week, in conjunction with a weekly family group helps keep the individual accountable, to themselves and those they love. “We want to reduce the incidence of triggers that signal relapse, and a return to the addiction spiral.” With a team of mental health professionals ranging from Clinical Psychologists, Marriage and Family Therapists, Licensed Clinical Social Workers, etc. - all Masters or PhD level cross-trained psychotherapists, patients are in the immense care of folks who recognize the changes necessary to alter mental perceptions and distortions. “The psychological restructuring starts the client on a path of growth moving beyond the confines and entanglements of addiction. This continuum of care can provide the strong foundation necessary to build a base of recovery.”
When facing down anything beyond one’s own capability, a great humility
is necessary. Big wave surfers, emergency medical personnel, firefighters, even educators can attest to the power of collected thinking when facing down unknown situations with potentially extreme consequences. Addiction, similarly, attacks from all directions, with remarkable disregard and abandon. “It’s a family disease”, Dr. Granese states. But what does that mean? Tripp and Loretta learned volumes from their son’s addictions and helped build into the treatment program a family humility that speaks to the entire system failing when one member falls apart at the seams.
But isn’t the addict the one with the problem? “The addiction is not only destroying the addict, it’s likely destroying the family too. You’re all involved in the addiction. Parents and loved ones can’t function: they worry, their job suffers, they fight and argue amongst themselves. They can’t take care of the rest of the family and their physical, emotional, and spiritual health suffers.” The family becomes addicted to their loved one’s addiction. Chaos, codependency, and a lack of boundaries all compound the issues at hand.
While patients are certainly encouraged after they leave treatment to continue working with a sponsor and start step work within a Sober Living Outpatient Intensive, families are also encouraged to learn steps and tools to help get out of the toxic and repetitive cycles of abuse. Stepping outside the manipulations and co-dependencies that have been formed help the patient discover how it feels to escape isolation, fear, and anxiety, and practice healthy selfcare. “Sometimes, what we think of as ‘helping’ the addict is not helping at all,” Dr. Granese notes. “You can actually do more harm than good.”
With the presence of an ever changing healthcare system and the uncertainty of being able to receive quality care, AMFM is furthering its vision to include a separate intensive outpatient Mental Health track. This patient-centered outpatient program specializes in working with those suf-
fering from an array of mental health diagnosis. The need for mental health treatment is expanding in Orange County and it is our aim to fill this increased need and be a center that strives for a healthier community.
“Patients get to choose not only the times that work for their own schedule, but most of all, they get to decide which groups yield the best personal results.” While a base level of care may look the same for everyone, a key component at AMFM are non-standard time allotments for treatment. Most programs, via insurance companies, place restrictions on a patient’s treatment. Conversely, each person’s needs are continually evaluated to carefully negotiate their duration of care. “This means attendees can slowly transition out at a time they feel confident and are not limited by the coverage of their insurance plan. We allow for complete rehabilitation and optimal individual success.” Designed for both individuals who are coming into care for the first time, and those taking the step-down approach to their treatment, AMFM’s Outpatient Program has found it’s patient’s success rates easily outpace those in other programs.
“Many individuals are successful starting with and remaining in outpatient. For some, outpatient can be a great indicator that a higher level of care is needed.” Every individual coming to the program, whether from another facility, or transitioning from AMFM’s 45-90 day program sees a psychiatrist. Each therapist in the program is an employee, not a contractor. “They are therefore highly committed to working as a team, and have high standards of care to maintain.” The outpatient program is led by Terrence Kelleman, a Licensed, Advanced Drug and Alcohol Counselor. 30 years of experience to back his title, a remarkably outgoing personality, and direct leadership style allows him to facilitate the most effective group meetings possible.
While in the program, patients are held accountable with the help of drug testing, yet they have also dis-

covered that by testing for a myriad of toxicities, both man-made and natural, therapists within AMFM can help diagnose disorders or dysfunctions based on underlying contributors, like amino acid or zinc deficiencies. “Most care facilities treat symptoms: we look at root cause.” A holistic approach to each patient helps care for the person, as well as the addiction. “We want to get our patients out of the isolation and stigma of addiction- not just out from underneath the day to day problems they might be experiencing.” Nutrition, exercise, and accountability work together to create a whole picture of wellness for each patient that comes needing care. Strongly recommending patients to stay within the boundaries of a Sober Living Outpatient aftercare program is essential for anyone serious about recovery. “Many patients stay in aftercare for one year or more, increasing their chance of long-term sobriety.”
Addiction isn’t discriminating. It doesn’t single out specific personality types, or only the wealthy. Only the poverty stricken, only males. It doesn’t care. Originally starting as a recovery center that specifically dealt with men, and the unique issues they deal with, A Mission for Michael has now expanded to include treatment for women. “When it comes to treatment, there are definitely differences in how drugs affect women and men, and thus the treatment methods must take into account the social and biological factors that must be used.” Hormones, for example, affect brain chemistry, altering long

term thought and behavior patterns for women, especially from a young age. There are varying societal pressures that contribute to expectations of success, maintaining relationships, and careers. “Unique stresses create expectations ripe for fostering anxious mental states where substance abuse thrives.”
In addition to expanding to accept women for treatment and having an intensive outpatient program for Mental Health, A Mission For Michael has also implemented an Integrative Wellness division to enhance treatment protocols.
“This means our clients have more resources than ever before available to help them achieve and maintain sobriety as well as to identify and learn possible root causes related to their addiction and mental illness,” says Lori R. Kelly, Ph.D., Director of Integrative Wellness. “If we have a

thorough picture then we can develop a deeper understanding of what led the client to our door.”
Dr. Kelly explains that integrative wellness is the utilization of conventional and complementary approaches to the treatment of addiction and mental illness in a coordinated way in order to achieve optimal results. Digestive health issues, nutritional deficiencies, metabolic dysfunction and toxic chemical exposure are all factors, which
contribute to symptoms and illness within the body.
“These areas are among those screened through our integrative analysis now available to our clients,” she says. “This provides an individualized treatment regimen that is unparalleled and encompasses the uniqueness of each person. Any deficiency or abnormality is addressed by our team through the use of natural products such as food, vitamins, minerals and probiotics along with mind-body practices including yoga, meditation and Pilates.
“My goal is for every client to evolve from a passive recipient, at the beginning of treatment to an active participant in their achievement of a healthy recovery and lifelong wellness.”

Long Beach-based nonprofit Algalita Marine Research and Education is hosting a fun and environmental friendly event on Saturday, December 2nd from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. “Get Off the Naughty List Beach Clean Up and Scavenger Hunt” was created to make a positive difference in the community.
There will be prizes available by participating in a plastic pollution scavenger hunt, opportunities to help Algalita collect and identify bottle caps, and a chance to meet
scientists who study plastic pollution. The Algalita team will be meeting at the Long Beach Peninsula at 72nd Place and they encourage as many people to join in this free event by participating in the beach clean up and/or scavenger hunt.
The founder of Algalita, Captain Charles Moore, initially began focusing on solutions to plastic pollution after discovering the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Located in the North Pacific Ocean as far as 1,000 miles away from land, this debris field is a collection of (largely plastic) marine litter. “Every time I came on deck to survey the horizon, I saw a soap bottle, bottle cap or a shard of plastic waste bobbing by,” says Moore, author of Plastic Ocean. “Here I was in the middle of the ocean and there was nowhere I could go to avoid the plastic.”
Algalita works to inspire solutions to plastic pollution. Established in 1994 to protect the marine environment, the organization has evolved into a leading research organization focused on plastic pollution and its impacts on marine life and ecosystems. y first introduction to the city of Chicago was the 1995 film While You Were Sleeping. B-roll of the city’s skyline flashed through the movie, and the clickety-clack of the “L” ran through its soundtrack. A silver caterpillar cruising over bridges, past the Chicago River. Home to two and a half million people, the city boasts some of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. Parks, hotels, river walks and cruises: enough to fill a day, a weekend, or even a couple weeks of fun filled romping around The Windy City.

Located in the heart of downtown Chicago, Millennium Park showcases world-class architecture, the most sophisticated outdoor concert venue of its kind: an award-winning center
for art and music designed by Frank Gehry. Bordered by Michigan Avenue to the west, Columbus Drive to the east, Randolph Street to the North, and Monroe Street to the South: a virtual hotbed of activity any way you walk. Conceived as an outdoor space by then-mayor Richard M. Dayley, the plan evolved from a 16-acre park
Rising 1,353 above the streets of the Windy City, The Ledge is a transformative viewing experience. Not for the faint of heart, it’s glass boxes extend 4.3 feet beyond Willis Towers’ Skydeck on the 103rd floor, providing a rarely seen view of the city. The original Sears Tower architecture firm (Skidmore, Owings and Merrill) designed The Ledge so that the fully enclosed glass boxes retract into the building, allowing access for maintenance - and to keep the glass as crystalline as possible. Standing 110 stories tall, the tower itself is a world renowned feat of architecture. Being out on a glass ledge, over a thousand
feet above the deck, you’ll never see Chicago with the same eyes again.

SUE is the largest, most complete, and best-preserved Tyrannosaurus rex in the entire world (and the most iconic exhibit in the Field Museum). Like most boys his age, my 10-yearold (and his Daddy, for that matter) haven’t outgrown the fascination with all things dinosaur. From the tip of her snout to the tip of her tail, SUE measures 40.5 feet long. Though her skeleton greets you right when you walk in Stanley Field Hall, the skull atop the skeleton is a replica (the original 600-pound skull sits in a display on the Museum’s balcony, beneath a mural of what SUE might have looked like before she was a fossil). From dinosaurs (Evolving Planet) and mummies (Inside Ancient Egypt) to the Underground Adventure (where you shrink down to the size of a bug), you can easily while away an educational afternoon here.
Be transported to the outer reaches of the Universe on a visit to Chicago’s Adler Planetarium and Astronomy

You’ll also visit Shoot for the Moon, highlighting the exciting stories of space exploration and America’s bold plans to travel to the Moon.

All they really had to say were the words “free evening wine hours,” and I was in. Not a wine drinker? How about being within walking distance to the Cadillac Place Theatre, or Millennium Park, or Willis Tower? Or the fact that its location, in the heart of Chicago’s Theatre District,
is surrounded by the Loop’s foremost sights - including Grant Park and State Street’s shopping Mecca. Perhaps it’s the mere mention of 312 Chicago (for more info, see Chicago Eats/Dining Destinations) or Bar Allegro (voted one of the “Coolest Hotel Bars in Chicago” by Michigan Avenue Magazine), with its delicious small bites and cocktails. Each add up to just one thing: America’s Golden Era is alive and well at the Kimpton Hotel Allegro (www.allegrochicago.com).
The simple, yet sophisticated elegance of this historic boutique haven harkens back to an era of elegant hobnobbing and glamour (think mid-century moxie and old school glamour with a modern twist) - its accommodations are classically stylish, super comfy, amenity-rich (on-demand movies, designer toiletries, in room spa services or free in-room yoga accessories) with the added perks of a hosted social hour in the hotel’s lobby living room from 5 pm - 6 pm nightly, complimentary newspapers and morning coffee and tea service daily. The friendly, helpful staff are at the ready to show guests what Chicago is made of. And if you have a little wine on the side, so be it.

136 N. La Salle Street
Old World charm and authentic Italian cuisine is at its finest in the heart of the Chicago Loop. Located adjacent to the Cadillac Palace Theatre inside the Hotel Allegro, 312 Chicago is presided over by executive chef and Italian native Luca Corazzina. Taste your way through plates of silken Burrata cheese, pappardella bolognese, and Mediterranean branzino (a skin-on sea bass with yellow pepper puree, crab meat, green onions, radishes, fresno peppers, lime juice, olive oil and micro cilantro) so fresh you’ll feel as if you’ve been transported to Italy for dinner.

1112 S. Wabash Avenue
This classic hybrid Jewish deli/American family diner tips its hat to a bygone era by balancing the warmth of a 1940’s soda fountain nostalgia with a clean, modern design. Vintage revolving doors, fully functional antique silver soda jerks, an old-fashioned candy counter, white pharmacy tiles and 1920s art-nouveau fixtures add to its charm. And to our kids’ delight, breakfast is served all day!
The 11 City French Toast is crafted from fresh baked challah, strawberries, bananas and toasted coconut.
Our kiddos absolutely LOVED their fluffy buttermilk pancakes topped with chocolate chips and whipped cream, while I went for the delicious Smoked Scottish Salmon platter (friction smoked, hand-cut, no nitrates, no sugar).
The super friendly, attentive service here is worth a special mention: even though we were tourists and firsttime diners, we were greeted and treated like neighborhood regulars.

438 N. Wells Street
Considered the oldest family name in Chicago pizza, Lou Malnati’s has stayed true to the original Chicago style deep dish pizza recipe first created in the 1950’s. Lou’s is famous for its buttery, flakey crust; sweet and tangy tomatoes; gooey mozzarella cheese; and perfectly seasoned sausage. If you’re craving the best deep dish around, Lou Malnati’s is the place to go!
125 S. Clark Street
Revival Food Hall is a massive 24,000 square foot venue located in the heart of The Loop on the ground floor of The National—a 20-story restoration of a historic 1907 Daniel Burnham-designed building.
A kaleidoscope of all-local, artisanal purveyors prepare a variety of dishes for virtually every discriminating palate: Mexican fare, pizza, sandwiches, barbecue, baked goods, ramen, poke (my favorite), seafood, gelato, salads, coffee, cocktails and wine. You won’t find any restaurant chains here - most of the stalls are occupied as offshoots of small restaurants and food trucks

that have been established in other neighborhoods.
43 E. Ohio Street
With 63,000 square feet of space, dozens upon dozens of aisles of groceries, and 20-plus different restaurants and bars – Eataly’s is a foodie’s Italian-cuisine themed Disneyland.
Arguably the most popular restaurant here is La Pizza & La Pasta features two of the best-loved Italian dishes: Napoli-style pizza and al dente pasta. Grouped together in the southwest corner of the second floor, they share a menu - making this the most immediately appealing area for a group that includes all ages.

True to form, the kids opted for the Margherita pizza, and then had to stave off the adults grabbing a slice (or two). This delicious dish is the real deal folks and quite possibly the best Neapolitan pizza in the city – boasting both a beautifully charred crust and the perfect balance of crisp exterior to airy, soft interior, a light brushing of tart and slightly sweet tomato sauce and a smattering of just-melted tangy mozzarella. Paris in a Cup is a transporting experience. That is to say, once inside, you’re in Paris. Segmented into two unique experiences, Paris in a Cup greets you with a boutique where treasures from France abound (at very reasonable prices), where you can find a little beautiful something for almost anyone: imported and signature lines of tea, handmade cards, aprons, Parisian memorabilia, jewelry, sweets and more. NINA’s teas boasts a 300 year tradition distinguished by a wide range of the finest tea blends - today delicately flavored with pure essential oils, including its popular Marie-Antoinette tea, flavored with apples and roses.

“We are proud to offer these teas freshly brewed at the table, in store and online for purchase to enjoy at home,” says Cheryl. “They also make a very thoughtful gift for the tea connoisseur.”
Keep going and you find the real treasure, a tearoom worthy of the most iconic streets of Paris itself. Chandeliers, original art, glamorous French

accents and detail after detail create a rich, stately ambience without being gaudy or overwhelming. It’s an atmosphere ideal for bridal and baby showers, women’s group meetings, corporate luncheons, anniversary celebrations and office parties with a bit of panache.
But half the delight of France is cuisine. Paris in a Cup is, after all, a restaurant. Don’t let the “tearoom” part fool you; their menu arguably outshines the décor (and that’s saying something). In addition to traditional tea and fare (scones, pastries, finger sandwiches), Paris in a Cup offers a full lunch menu of handcrafted soups (try their famous baked potato soup), delectable salads and hearty sandwiches. All their breads are made in-house and the extraordi-

nary desserts are almost as beautiful as they are delicious. If you only take one thing away from Paris in a Cup, perhaps consider making it a macaroon, a treat for which they have become famous; so famous that many proclaim these macaroons to be better than those you might enjoy in Paris.
For visitors, Paris in a Cup is a chance to escape to Paris for an hour or two. For Cheryl, it has been a dream come true and a reason to delay retirement for just a little while longer.

Winter Fest’s giant wonderland of family fun and date night charm is a great value with tickets available starting at only $10. Season passes are also available for all 18 days of Winter Fest to capture plenty of Instagram-worthy pictures.
“Winter Fest has become a go-to destination for Southern California families to celebrate the holiday season and we are proud to bring ‘winter to the OC’ for our third year of fun, food and entertainment,” said Katrina Carlson, Events Director of Celebration Festivals. “We’re bringing back all the attractions people love, from high-speed sledding thrills to a larger real snow play area, outdoor ice skating, and flying Santa and his Reindeer over the fairgrounds. Whether you choose to come for a day of carnival games and snow play, enjoy a holiday cocktail over evening entertainment, or ring in the New Year, Winter Fest has something for everyone to make lasting memories.”
Private, ice rink-side VIP cabanas start at only $69 per session, creating a destination for holiday office parties, birthday parties, family retreats or date nights. This December, you’ll experience the magic of the holiday season in Huntington Harbour. First, there’s the annual boat parade. This is the 55th year the Huntington Harbour Philharmonic Committee presents a breathtaking parade enjoyed by thousands of spectators.
Dozens of boats will wind around Harbour waterways Saturday, December 9th and Sunday, December 10th, 2017. They’re decorated in lights of every size and shape. Some boats have animated decorations. Stars, reindeer, musical notes, bands, palm trees, and Santa were viewed as one boat after another joined in the fun. Entrants decorate in whatever way they want. Have a religious theme in mind? It’s always welcome. Traditional? Absolutely. Whimsical, romantic, oldies, classical...you’re sure to hear big applause from everyone watching the parade.
Out of area judges award prizes in many categories. Beautiful trophies are proudly displayed by the winners. Why does the Huntington Harbour Philharmonic present the boat parade? It’s a thank you to the residents for decorating their roofs, homes, decks, and docks.
Right after the boat parade the HHPC presents the Cruise of Lights®...a 45 minute narrated boat tour where thousands see those home and boat decorations. Funds raised from the Cruise of Lights® support local children’s music programs. Guests came from as far away as China last year to see the Cruise of Lights®
Do you have a boat? Have some fun this year, and join the parade. Entering is free. Corporate boats wanted, too. Your banner will be seen from all over the Harbour, including the little beaches and bridges. Anywhere people can catch the parade. Info: hhboatparade.com.
Cruise of Lights® dates are December 15 - 18 and December 21 - 23. This year, there are extended cruises available, plus Land and Sea cruises (including off-water home viewing, dinner, and a Cruise). Then, there’s Santa’s Special Night on December 18th. Children 12 and under receive a free gift that night, and, of course get a big hello from Santa.
Cruise of Lights® tickets make special holiday presents for friends, relatives, teachers...and anyone you’d like to treat to a special night. Info: cruiseoflights.org or 714-840-7542.

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States. One in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer in the course of a lifetime and between 40-50% of people over the age of 65 will have at least one skin cancer. It can occur anywhere on the body and may be completely asymptomatic. Everyone should have a full body skin examination by a board-certified dermatologist once a year, more frequently if you or a first degree relative has previously been diagnosed with skin cancer.
