MIDLIFE MONEY ERRORS

If you are between 40 & 60, beware of these financial blunders & assumptions. Provided by Ken Earwood

M

istakes happen, even for people who have some life experience under their belt. That said, your retirement strategy is one area of life where you want to avoid having some fundamental misconceptions. These errors and suppositions are worth examining, as you do not want to succumb to them. See if you notice any of these behaviors or assumptions creeping into your financial life. Do you think you need to invest with more risk? If you are behind on retirement saving, you may find yourself wishing for a “silver bullet” investment or wishing you could allocate more of your portfolio to today’s hottest sectors or asset classes, so you can “catch up.” This impulse could backfire. The closer you get to retirement age, the fewer years you have to recoup investment losses. As you age, the argument for diversification and dialing down risk in your portfolio gets stronger and stronger. Diversification is an approach to help manage investment risk. It does not eliminate the risk of loss if security prices decline. Have you made saving for retirement a secondary priority? It should be a top priority, even if it becomes secondary for a while, due to fate or bad luck. Some families put saving for college first, saving for mom and dad’s retirement second. Remember that college students can apply for financial aid, but retirees cannot. Building college savings ahead of your own retirement savings may leave your young adult children well-funded for the near future, but you ill-prepared for your own. Has paying off your home loan taken priority over paying off other debts? Owning your home free and clear is a great goal, but if that is what being debt free means to you, you may end up saddled with crippling consumer debt on the way toward that long-term objective. In late 2018, the average American household carried more than $6,900 in credit card debt alone. It is usually better to attack credit card debt first, thereby freeing up money you can use to invest, save for retirement, build a rainy day fund – and yes, pay the mortgage.1 Have you taken a loan from your workplace retirement plan? If you’ve taken this step, consider the following. One, you are drawing down your retirement savings – invested assets, which would otherwise have the capability to grow and compound. Two, you will probably repay the loan via deductions from your paycheck, cutting into your take-home pay. Three, you will probably have to repay the full amount within five years – a term that may not be long as you would like. Four, if you are fired or quit, the entire loan amount will likely have to be paid back by a deadline specified in your plan. Five, if you cannot pay the entire amount back and you are younger than 59½, the I.R.S. will characterize the unsettled portion of the loan as a prema6

ture distribution from a qualified retirement plan – fully taxable income subject to early withdrawal penalties.2 Do you assume that your peak earning years are straight ahead? Conventional wisdom says that your yearly earnings reach a peak sometime during your mid- to latefifties, but this is not always the case. Those who work in physically rigorous occupations may see their earnings plateau after age 50 – or even, age 40. Is your emergency fund now too small? It should be growing gradually to suit your household, and nowadays your household may need much greater cash reserves in a crisis than it once did. If you have no real emergency fund, do what you can now to build one, so you don’t have to resort to a predatory lender for expensive money. Watch out for these midlife money errors & assumptions. Some are all too casually made. A review of your investment and retirement savings efforts may help you recognize and steer clear of them.

HOW EDINGER CAN HELP

Medicare In Orange County

What You Need To Know

N

avigating the complex world of Medicare is confusing. Seniors often have questions about the various plans, options, and when to apply. If you or a family member are new to Medicare and don’t know where to start, let Edinger Medical Group and its team of Medicare experts do the work for you.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE? Older adults become eligible to apply for Medicare during the Initial Enrollment Period, which includes 3 months before you turn 65, the month of your 65th birthday, and 3 months after. If you or your spouse will continue working after 65, you have 8 months to enroll after you stop working or lose group health plan coverage. Deciding about plans in a timely manner is crucial, as there are “lock-in periods” in which you can and cannot change your coverage or health plan. Specific deadline dates can be obtained online at cms. gov. 8

ADVANTAGES OF MEDICARE ADVANTAGE Edinger Medical Group is currently accepting new patients who have qualifying Medicare Advantage HMO plans. Medicare applicants will be asked to choose between Original Medicare with a supplemental plan called Medigap plus a standalone drug plan, or a Medicare Advantage plan. Medicare Advantage plans are great because many have low to zero monthly premiums and they are considered “all-inone” plans, meaning they cover everything that traditional Medicare offers in addition to supplemental benefits like dental, hearing, vision, and prescription drug coverage.

WHAT IS OPEN ENROLLMENT? If you’ve already enrolled in a Medigap plan and you decide you want to switch to a Medicare Advantage plan, you’re in luck! You can enroll

To help patients understand their options, Edinger Medical Group offers referrals to trusted insurance brokers who will do a side-by-side plan comparison of the various Medicare plans and options at no cost. In addition, Edinger Medical Group provides free educational webinars and in-person seminars open to the public to break down what Medicare is, when to get enrolled, and how to determine which plan is right for you. Go to policyengineer.com/firstlook2024 or call 714965-2557 to register. The VIP-level care at Edinger Medical Group doesn’t stop there; it has a dedicated Senior Care team, accessible with a direct phone line, who help patients manage their medications, appointments, labs, referrals and any health-related concerns year-round. With offices in Huntington Beach and Fountain Valley, Edinger Medical Group is an award-winning primary care practice that specializes in Internal Medicine and Family Medicine. Mission Viejo Wigs:

Where Customers are “Family”

M

by Jody robinson

ission Viejo Wigs is truly a family business. Not in the traditional sense, where its owners and operators share the same genes. But rather in such a way that every person who has walked through Owner Betty Darroch’s doors in the 30+ years she has been in operation immediately felt like a member of Darroch’s extended family.

As a professional hair and wig stylist since 1962, Betty began her career at CBS where her résumé reads like a celebrity screenplay starring the coifs of a veritable “who’s who” of Hollywood: Ann Margaret, Carol Lawrence, the Midnight Specials and the Sonny & Cher Show. She went on to work for the Hallelujah Hollywood Show at the MGM Hotel in Las Vegas. But it wasn’t until she opened her own business in Mission Viejo that she felt as though she were “truly doing God’s work.” Her clients today include people who are experiencing hair loss due to chemotherapy treatment, alopecia or other medical conditions. Betty specializes in wigs, hairpieces and toupees for women, men and children and carries only the highest quality brands. Each wig or hairpiece is custom fit to the client for the most natural look and feel – no one will know you’re wearing a wig unless you tell them. “Hair loss, whether it is the result of illness, the aging process or heredity, can be a traumatic and emotionally draining experience,” says Betty. “We work with people on a daily basis who are facing the issue of hair loss for the first time. Our goal is to help you find the solution that works best for you and do so in a caring way that makes you realize that you are not alone.” There are wonderful testimonials from longtime customers on her web site (missionviejowigs. com), but for me, the best testament to Betty’s genuine, caring nature came from a source closer to home. When my mother was diagnosed with lung cancer six years ago, there were so many aspects of what she was facing - including the side effects associated wit chemotherapy treatment – that were out of our control. But my mother’s appearance was something she felt she could dictate. We knew she would lose her hair, but she was determined not to “look like a sick person.” From the moment my mother met Betty, she knew she had found the right place and more importantly, the right person to help her. Betty shared so many stories of survival – of longtime customers and friends who fought a similar battle and won. Her warm embrace and inspired hope and help steel her resolve to maintain a positive, fighting attitude when she was diagnosed with lung cancer. The wig Betty selected was the perfect color and style for my mother’s face (and head) shape. The wig was so natural looking that my mother

received many compliments on her “new do” and no one was the wiser. It’s been over nine years since my mother completed treatment and is now leading a cancer-free life. Although her own hair has long since grown back, she still often prefers to wear Betty’s wigs on “bad hair days.” Thank you Betty!

Reenvisioning Vision with OrCam Technologies By Jody Robinson

R

eading has always been my favorite hobby. I learned early, and fell fast for books of all kinds. I’ll confess, until recently, I didn’t know much about assistive learning devices. But as an already vision-challenged person (I’ve been significantly nearsighted my entire life and a retinal detachment surgery 15 or so years ago lent itself to an even stronger lens prescription), I’m keenly interested in anything that might allow me to maintain one of my favorite pastimes well into my golden years. Advancement toward that end? OrCam Technologies’ MyEye - a wearable, voice-activated visual impairment solution and the all new OrCam Read 3, an all in one solution for low vision and visual impairments including reading difficulties related to age-related vision loss, mild to moderate low vision or reading fatigue. 14

OrCam Technologies’ offerings have earned multiple awards and distinctions, including topping TIME Magazine’s Best Inventions list in 2019 and 2021. Founded just nine years before their first TIME accolades landed in print, Israeli innovators Professor Amnon Shashua and Ziv Aviram’s mission was to enrich their customer’s daily experience - beyond just lifting text off the page. Fresh from a background with Mobileye crafting collision avoidance systems and autonomous driving innovations, Mr. Aviram brought his technological expertise to the world of handheld and wearable devices. “Inspired by Mobileye’s groundbreaking artificial vision technology that supports safer drivers, Shashua and Aviram co-founded OrCam with the idea that we can also harness AI-driven computer vision and machine learning to bring increased independence to people who are blind or visually impaired and those

“This technology is global, and it is opening the door to visual accessibility,” says Lauren. “We designed comprehensive tools that provide the right solution at the right time to enhance your experience.” OrCam products can magnify text, transform text to speech, can translate, can zoom in on handwriting, change text by customizing contrast and background colors. OrCam can focus in on headlines or scan a recipe to see what ingredients to add to your shopping list. Shashua and Aviram co-founded OrCam with the idea that we could harness AI-driven computer vision and machine learning to bring independence to people who are blind, those suffering from vision impairment, or even individuals who are struggling with learning differences. Ending Your Timeshare Just Got Easier

The Real Deal Has Arrived By Joanna Espinueva

Thousands of timeshare owners have successfully ended their timeshares through a proven resource, We Want Your Timeshare.

T

he company has a unique model which is centered around a transaction with a major bonus, every client receives a 3-year membership to a travel club! In essence, your timeshare is traded into a travel club that will be able to use it. The previous owner is then able to enjoy a couple of years of unrestricted travel without the hassle of timesharing systems.

Offering education and resources for avoiding timeshare exit scams is a passion for their CEO Alexandra Olson. “In an industry riddled with deceit and fraud, we give our knowledge freely and hope, if nothing else, that we can help the masses avoid being the victim of a scam.”

1. MAKE SURE THERE IS A PLAN

As a 15-year veteran of the timeshare industry, Olson has catapulted into the spotlight as the leading industry expert on timeshare and exit scams. It even landed her on FOX 10 Phoenix, ABC 15, The Arizona Republic and the Phoenix Business Journal.

Most timeshare exit companies will try to cancel a timeshare as there are no buyers. The only guaranteed way out is to find someone else willing to become the new owner.

Whether estate planning, sick of the never-ending cycle of rising maintenance fees, or just tired of dealing with the archaic, expensive exchange system, there are plenty of reasons folks are looking to dump their timeshare.

If anyone advises you to stop paying maintenance fees as a means of negotiating your timeshare contract, RUN! This can lead to impact on credit and other assets and ultimately encourage the resort to be unwilling to approve a transfer.

CEO Alexandra Olson 16

CEO Alexandra Olson’s Top Tips for Avoiding Timeshare Scams

When asked about We Want Your Timeshare, Olson shares “our mission is to revolutionize the timeshare exit industry by providing a zero-risk option for timeshare owners that want out! We’re v e r y t r a n s p a rent about it. No risk, an amazing replacement product and a legal timeshare exit so you can be done with your timeshare forever. We’re very proud of that!”

2. BEWARE OF NEGOTIATORS

3. THERE IS NO RESALE MARKET Accept that there are thousands of timeshares not selling for one penny. Timeshare is outdated and there is no market for resale. Do not pay timeshare listing companies to advertise something that will never sell. Olson will be presenting her popular seminar, “What to do About that Timeshare” on November 14th near Laguna Woods Village at the Sonesta Select Laguna Hills at 10 am. Coffee & Pastries will be served. To secure a space (limited) interested timeshare owners can call 602-734-5590.

Unlocking the Mind with Ketamine:

A NEW APPROACH TO MENTAL HEALTH CARE

By Tanya Dall, MD and Justin Yanuck, MD

For decades, the traditional psychiatric model has centered on managing symptoms rather than addressing the root causes of mental health disorders.

W

hile this approach has provided relief for many, it often falls short in offering a comprehensive solution. Enter ketamine, a groundbreaking treatment that challenges this status quo. This article explores the limitations of the conventional model and highlights how ketamine offers a paradigm shift in mental health treatment.

The Symptom-Centric Approach: A Double-Edged Sword

sense of hopelessness can pervade. Ketamine therapy represents a lifeline for those with treatment-resistant conditions, offering relief in a matter of hours. By circumventing the limitations of traditional medications, ketamine offers an alternative trajectory to recovery for those ensnared in the cycle of ineffectual treatments.

Embracing Simplicity: Reducing Polypharmacy

Traditional psychiatric treatments, often involving daily medications, primarily target symptoms. While this method can provide necessary relief, it frequently overlooks the underlying complexities of mental health conditions. By zeroing in on symptom management, we risk missing crucial opportunities for more profound, sustainable healing.

Many individuals with mental health conditions find themselves on multiple medications, each targeting different symptoms. This polypharmacy approach can lead to a host of potential complications, including drug interactions and increased risk of side effects. Ketamine’s unique mechanism of action opens the door to a more streamlined treatment approach, potentially reducing the need for a complex medication regimen.

Ketamine’s Unique Mechanism: Addressing the Source

Resilience Against Tolerance and Dependency

Unlike conventional treatments, ketamine takes a fundamentally different approach to mental health. Its rapidacting antidepressant effects stem from its modulation of the glutamate system, a neurotransmitter associated with learning, memory, and mood regulation. By influencing synaptic plasticity, ketamine has the potential to forge new neural pathways, potentially tackling the root causes of mental health disorders.

One of the persistent challenges with traditional antidepressants is the risk of developing tolerance or dependency over time. In contrast, ketamine has shown a lower likelihood of these issues. Studies suggest that ketamine’s unique mechanism of action minimizes the risk of tolerance, making it a promising option for long-term treatment.

Breaking the Chains of Treatment-Resistance For individuals who have found little solace in standard treatments, a 20

A Tailored Path to Healing One of the strengths of ketamine therapy lies in its adaptability. Dosing and administration methods can be tailored to suit the unique needs of each patient, allowing for a personal-

ized approach to treatment. This customization not only increases the likelihood of a positive response but also minimizes the risk of adverse effects.

Conclusion: A New Dawn for Mental Health Treatment The traditional psychiatric model, while valuable, is not the only path to mental wellness. Ketamine therapy represents a transformative option for individuals seeking relief from the burdens of mental health disorders. By reevaluating our approach to treatment, we open new doors to healing, offering a more holistic and empowering path towards mental well-being. As we continue to explore the potential of ketamine and other innovative treatments, we move closer to a future where comprehensive, patient-centered care is the standard, not the exception. thing we can offer families is that we honor the people we are entrusted to care for. It is indeed a blessing to see our services make a positive impact in people’s lives. It is humbling to know that we get to provide a vital service that enriches and prolongs people’s lives. Q: How many hours does a typical home care client start with? A: The hours vary based on the needs of the client. Some clients like to start with a four-hour, or a six-hour shift. Others know they will need more care than that and schedule full days. We try to be as accommodating as possible to meet the scheduling needs of our clients. We work with many clients coming home from the hospital, or skilled nursing facility and they require 24 hour care as they rehab and regain their strength.

Companionship and social engagement is another key aspect of caregiving. Some of our seniors feel isolated and lonely, so a caregiver becomes a friend to talk to and their bond is lasting.

Another important aspect of scheduling is establishing consistency and dependability for the families we serve. We work hard to have the same caregivers work with our clients whenever possible in order to build rapport and strong relationships.

Seniors with a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s or Dementia can benefit greatly from a caregiver because they are experienced in working with people with cognitive impairments. They are trained on the techniques used to manage behavior, keeping them safe and well supervised.

Q: Tell us about the staff at Your Home Care. A: Employees and clients say they appreciate working with us because they get to deal directly with the owners. They like working with the decision makers because it tends to make things run more smoothly and the process is more streamlined. Owners Segal Ronen and Kyle Warner oversee everything from client acquisition, employee operations to office administration. But the real magic behind what we do is the talented, experienced team of caregivers we have the pleasure of working alongside. Our team is filled with special people and it’s apparent they genuinely love what they do and have “a calling” for this work. They are service-minded, kind people, who love to care for seniors as though they are family.

Q: What makes Your home care stand out above the other home care agencies? A: The senior home care industry is growing and changing. The trend we are seeing is an increase in rates, add-on fees and lengthy minimum hour requirements. At Your Home Care we don’t have lengthy minimum hour requirements, nor do we up-charge. We make every effort to be as accommodating and flexible as possible to meet the needs of our clients. We are responsive and available to our clients and caregivers when they need us. We act quickly to address and resolve any issue or concern. Going back to our mission…to provide compassionate home care services that enrich families’ lives… with this in mind we are always looking for ways we can exceed our clients’ expectations.

Q: What types of services does home care typically cover? A: We offer a wide range of non-medical home care services and customize a care plan for every client. These services include personal care related services such as bathing, dressing, bathroom assistance and other personal hygiene needs. We prepare meals, provide transportation and help with housekeeping duties. We help with mobility and fall prevention. We basically help with all the activities of normal daily living that seniors might need a hand with.

Your Home Care is a company with heart, we care about our clients, and we care about our employees. If you are considering home care for you or your loved one, you can call Kyle Warner directly at

(949) 424-9322 and let us show you how much we care. 23

How Can I Tell If I Have Skin Cancer? There are three main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Because each has many different appearances, it is important to know the early warning signs. 26

L

ook especially for change of any kind. Do not ignore a suspicious spot simply because it does not hurt. Skin cancers may be painless, but dangerous all the same. If you notice one or more of the warning signs, see a board-certified dermatologist right away, preferably one who specializes in diseases of the skin.

WHAT PATIENTS NEED TO KNOW 1. Everyone needs to perform a self-skin exam once a month.

ACTINIC KERATOSIS

An actinic keratosis (AK) is a crusty, scaly growth caused by damage from exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. An AK is considered a precancer because if left alone, it could develop into a skin cancer. AKs are the product of a lifetime accumulation of UV damage and typically appear on areas most commonly exposed sun, such as the backs of the hands, forearms, face, neck, and scalp.

BASAL CELL CARCINOMA

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most frequently occurring form of all cancers, with more than 4 million cases of diagnosed in the U.S. each year. BCCs may look like open sores, red patches, pink growths, shiny bumps, or scars. Any skin lesion that doesn’t heal, or bleeds with even gentle trauma, such as drying with a towel, is concerning for a BCC.

2. Melanoma can appear anywhere on the skin, including the palms/soles, under your nails, and places...for most, have never seen the light of day (genitalia). For this reason, it is important to look everywhere. Lock the bathroom door, get out a hand mirror, and check, it could save your life. 3. What to look for: ABCDEs, and an ugly duckling A - Asymmetry: If I draw a line down the middle, do the sides match? B - Border: Is there a nice crisp border, or does the mole melt into the surrounding skin? C - Color: Moles should be one color, one shade of brown. Is there a variety of shades or additional colors, such as black, red, white, or blue? D - Diameter: Any mole larger than 6mm, ie the head of a pencil eraser, has a higher risk of becoming melanoma.

SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells arising in the epidermis, the skin’s outermost layer. SCCs often look like scaly red patches, crusty bumps, warts, or elevated growths with a central depression. SCCs may appear suddenly and some forms are tender to touch. They can become disfiguring and sometimes deadly if allowed to grow. More than 1 million cases of SCC are diagnosed each year in the U.S., which translates to about 115 cases diagnosed every hour. Incidence has increased by 200 percent in the past three decades in the U.S., and more than 15,000 Americans die each year from this type of skin cancer.

MELANOMA

Melanoma is a very dangerous form of skin cancer. Melanoma is caused mainly by intense, occasional UV exposure (frequently leading to sunburn), especially in those who are genetically predisposed to the disease. An estimated 178,560 cases of melanoma are diagnosed in the U.S. each year and is fatal for an estimated 9,320 of these patients. Fortunately, if melanoma is recognized and treated early, it is almost always curable.

E - Evolution: Has it changed? F - The Ugly Duckling Sign: Most people have a “signature mole,” their own personal mole appearance and architecture. Is there a mole that seems different from all the others? 4. Everyone needs a full body skin exam by a board-certified dermatologist once a year, more frequently if you have a family history of skin cancer, a personal history of skin cancer, or live in an area with substantial sunshine. 27

We have a ton of experience with all kinds of doors, no matter how old, what material, or what brand.” If hauling open your sliding door requires Herculean strength, it’s likely you’re experiencing rollers with dirt and dust buildup so they don’t roll the way they used to. Over the years, it’s common for the rollers to wear to the point that you may actually be dragging the entire weight of the sliding door across the track, which causes even more damage and drag every time you do it.

Performance & Professionalism:

Dr. Slide-Door By Jody Robinson

Several times a year my husband and I resolve to embark on a litany of long overdue home improvement endeavors. Clean out the garage. Pare down our closets of ill-fitting clothing. Fix broken things. Like many fellow homeowners, the latter often leads down a rabbit hole of deferred maintenance projects.

A

common refrain among our friend group? Countless home appliances to be replaced.

Garden and landscaping projects to embark on. And a rather surprising number of sliding glass doors in need of repair in our collective Southern California homes. Enter Shy Hadan. Known as Dr. SlideDoor, Shy's father was in the business of selling sliding doors, but when he saw that there was no one to fix them, he stepped in with a solution. “Usually people think they just have to be replaced, but that isn’t the case!

28

Whether your door is modern or ancient, made of aluminum, vinyl or wood … all you have to do to “remedy your rolling troubles” is schedule a free inspection. A tech will come out to see if the components can be fixed or replaced, and then...fix it. With over 25 years of industry experience, Dr. Slide-Door is the number one chosen sliding glass door repair service in Southern California. What sets them apart? Each member of Dr. Slide Door’s team arrives with everything you’ll need on site. “Your sliding door professional will replace the parts right down to the rollers, leaving your door feeling weightless and good as new. You’ll be amazed at how easily your door slides open and closed.” With parts made in Germany, you can be assured that your “new” door could last another 20 years: plenty of time to tackle out the rest of your resolutions. “Dr. J” Southern California Family Dentistry By Jody Robinson

I

don’t really read studies. I’m not a search-Google-for-the-numbers person. But I can tell you one thing as a person who experiences anxiety about dental work, it can be difficult to weight out my desire for continued ‘A’ grades from my bi-annual checkups with the fact that there are a great many dental procedures that seem overwhelming and risky. That’s why it’s so important to find the right dental professional with whom to build a long-term dental healthcare relationship. Oral health is more than just a pretty smile and comprehensive care encompassing different practice areas can be challenging to find under one roof – a hallmark that distinguishes Southern California Family Dentistry (SCFD) from others in the industry. With almost 30 years of experience in dentistry, Dr. J and his team of highly skilled dentists, hygienists, assistants, and office managers take a patient-centric approach to providing

exceptional general, cosmetic, and restorative dental care for patients of all ages. A member of the American Dental Association (ADA) and an associate fellow of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry (AAID), Dr. J holds a doctorate from the University of Southern California (USC) and completed his dental residency at the Medical College of Georgia. He took over an existing dental practice in 2006 that has now been serving the local community for over 50 years and is among only 5% of all dentists to carry the license needed to provide IV conscious sedation with his own laboratory on site to ensure 100% control over case outcomes. He and his team stay abreast of advancements in the field – both in terms of technology and continuing education. State-of-the-art dental technologies - diagnostic x-rays, CT scans and intraoral cameras - provide accurate and efficient diagnosis. Maybe it’s because I’m getting older, but I’m paying a bit more attention to information on dental implants and “teeth in a day” procedures than I have in the past. So many questions come to mind. How do you know if you’re a good candidate? Is the procedure really done in just one day? What are the benefits of dental implants versus dentures? How long do they last?

30

Because implant surgery is extremely technique-sensitive, an inexperienced dentist may not fully comprehend certain aspects until he or she gains the necessary skills that comes with time and repeated practice. Having placed dental implants for over 20 years and the placement of 20 to 30 dental implants per month (versus three to five in a year like some providers), Dr. J’s practice checks my first box: Experience. In terms of dentures vs. dental implants, Dr. J says removable dentures do not feel like real teeth because “they rest on top of the gums” so the majority of people who wear dentures must restrict their food intake. According to studies, complete dentures are only 20% as effective as natural teeth. “With dental implants, biting is significantly more effective, diminishing the potential for gastrointestinal issues.” “The best scenario is for the dentist who will be making the teeth to decide where the implant will be placed so that a single person is accountable for the entire procedure from start to finish,” says Dr. J. This is what we do here at SCFD - the same dentist who places the implant(s) is also in charge of restoring the implant. Dr. J adds that “the obvious benefit of dental implants is never having to go without teeth and completing the procedures in less time ensures you preserve the surrounding bone.” Anchored to it, these fittings are the final step in a process which begins with a dental consultation, diagnostic work up, x-rays, and extraction of any

remaining teeth. What used to take weeks however, can now be streamlined into a single appointment. “Dental implants are extremely safe,” he says. “They have been around for

decades now and there have been no issues with biocompatibility or rejections due to allergic reactions. The only thing unsafe about implants is inexperience. “Missing teeth can directly and indirectly contribute to many health problems. Patients with many missing teeth or no teeth, show poor dietary habits and nutritional intake, increased risk of hypertension, coronary artery diseases and osteoporosis. There’s also the obvious esthetic benefit of not being without teeth. However, having a healthy mouth and a full set of teeth is the greatest benefit that implants offer.” There are a few questions that come from outlining that process - from a pain perspective, and also a practicality. When can I eat normally again? Will it be uncomfortable or irritating? Can I resume normal activities right away? The healing process typically takes about three to six months and primarily depends on the individual patient’s health and the quality of the bone that the implant is placed in. H. Jahangiri, DDS

“Dental implants can last just as long as natural teeth,” says Dr. J. “What

we do in implant dentistry is replace hopeless teeth, so if you take care of your implants the same way as your original teeth (that you lost), the results cannot be expected to be any better. However, if implants are taken care of properly, they can last as long as (if not longer than) teeth.” The boxes all check. Not only for a regular dental cleaning and checkups, but for long-term healthcare that you can truly build at the top of the body and work your way down. Whether you need a routine cleaning or a more complex procedure such as dental implants, you can trust that you are in the best of hands at Southern California Family Dentistry. “Oral health impacts the whole body - and when we can get you smiling, we’re well on our way to restoring a critical piece of that puzzle.” I’d imagine there’s at least a single study to prove that out. Don’t take my word for it though, give Dr. J a call and see what might get you into (or back into!) the dentist’s chair.

Absolutely Fabulous By Jody Robinson

Y

ears ago, a friend had a birthday and her family threw her a surprise party. This is a woman I've always had the hardest time shopping for - she leans toward unique, one-of-a-kind items and decor and her tastes are always a little eclectic and a lot of fun. I called a mutual friend for some ideas and she told me something I haven’t forgotten to this day: there are two types of presents. One that means something to the receiver because it reflects what they love. The other means something to them because it reflects what you love. Eighteen years ago, Diane Silverstein walked into an impulse buy like no other. (i.e. not your regular gift purchase) She came home with the deed to a retail space that would become Absolutely Fabulous - a supremely unique gift and decor destination that has 40

the Holidays!

evolved into a Surf City staple that folks from every corner of Orange County flock to for every milestone that calls for an extra special gift.

A recognized retail maven, Diane actually started her career as a registered nurse, practicing medicine for 34 years. A specialist in spinal cord injuries, she worked tirelessly to get her patients the care they needed. Now she is working to overcome some of her own personal health challenges, creating fun, happy spaces in the shop, and winning awards along the way. Her eye for curating the most incredible selection of home accent offerings and unique gifts make it easy to find the perfect item without making a million stops or needlessly scouring the vast black hole of the internet. To surprise others with such a selection, you have to have a specific passion for hunting down curious

chandising (did I mention that they have the best windows in the country – an honor repeatedly bestowed upon them by industry publications) and marketing. Diane was even flown to the United Kingdom by Gifts and Decorative Accessories Magazine (the leading magazine in the gift industry), put up in a hotel, and honored with the title of “VIP buyer.” “I guess they just like the selections I’ve made over the years,” Diane humbly responds when I ask why they chose her for this honor.

items others might have passed over, or never looked for in the first place. The variety and uniqueness of products at Absolutely Fabulous is astounding: hand-made jewelry, Miche Bag purses (the ones where you just drop the “insides” of your purse into a new shell, rather than having to dump all of your stuff out!), $10 silk scarves, old-school shaving kits for men, a “Daddy’s Tool Bag” that includes diaper changing equipment, and instructional DVD, face mask and other funny items, rare paintings by successful artists, large crystal chandeliers, crystal perfume bottles, stuffed animal baby bottle covers, piggy banks for kids, “dorm survival kits” for new students, wedding party gifts, rare Disney art and collectibles, seasonal decor and gifts, Christmas decorations that range from very inexpensive bottle stoppers and tree decorations to 6-foot high collectible Santa dolls. Absolutely really does cover the gamut of gifts for anyone: “from birth to death and everything in-between is our moniker” Diane proudly states. I tend to agree.

Let’s see what other people have had to say about Absolutely Fabulous (we checked their reviews): “nicest ladies who took terrific care of me,” “Love this store. It’s amazing and wonderful to shop in.” The raves go on and on. Absolutely Fabulous is not only a local treasure, however, they have been awarded multiple national awards for her visual mer-

Diane’s love for the store is reflected back by the community: this is the place locals love to shop and folks from out of town make sure to stop. Since that birthday when I struggled to find something for hardto-shop-for friend, I’ve heard another saying: “it’s not the gift, it’s the giver.” Diane is a little bit of both.

Wiens Cellars Our first Obscura blend was the result of a happy accident. Hidden in a dark corner of our cellar, this blend was overlooked for a year after it was scheduled for bottling, serendipitously culminating in a wine with substantial oak character, full body and lush, graceful tannins on the finish. Our 2020 Obscura emulates the second vintage with the same extended oak aging, continuing the tradition of this big, yet elegant Bordeaux-style blend. WiensCellars.com

Ask a SOMM By Jody Robinson

A good sommelier is a helper, a guide to finding the best wine for your food and experience. For this month’s installment, we again approached South County-based sommelier Micah Sampson for a bit of education about the wine/food pairings, whether the size and shape of the glass makes a difference and whether wine should be decanted before its served. Q Does white really go with

fish/seafood and red with red meat or is there some overlap?

A When in doubt the white with

seafood and red with red meat is a good rule. But of course, there’s definitely some overlap here when getting into the details. There are some fantastic lighter bodied red wines out there that can easily be paired with fish and other seafoods. Some of my favorites are Pinot Noir, Beaujolais, and Grenache, each of them have a light body with very light tannins, won’t overpower the delicate fish. And for red meats you can easily pour a full bodied white wine that has high acidity, think California Chardonnays, white Rhone blends, Rieslings and Chenin Blancs. All of these have nice body that can stand up to high fat red meats, and nice acidity that can shine through some of the more robust seasonings and marinades that are used to cook them.

Sommelier Micah Sampson 46

Q Does the shape/size of the

wine glass make a difference?

A This is one of those topics that I wish people took more seriously! In short, yes, the shape and size of the glass makes a huge difference! Wine glasses are designed with very specific shapes and sizes to help deliver wine aromas to your nose. If search “red wine glass” and “white wine glass” you’ll notice red wine glasses are much bigger and more bowl shaped, that’s because there are vapors coming off the wine as the alcohol slowly evaporates, those vapors are filled with compounds that help you taste the wine. White wines a typically chilled and won’t give off as much aromas, therefore the glass doesn’t need to be as large. Another reason for the smaller shape for whites is they don’t need need to aerate like reds do, less surface area reduces aeration and keeps the wine cooler. Reds on the other hand love to aerate and

therefore need all the surface area to slowly oxidize (in a good way). The bowl-shaped narrower opening at the top of the glass does two things that are both very important: 1) It helps trap the aromas into a smaller area to help you small them. Think about how much more difficult it would be to smell wine in a cereal bowl with an 8 inch opening than a wine glass with a 2 inch opening. 2) It helps keep the wine in the glass when you swirl the heck out of it, which you should do! I love swirling wine, it introduces oxygen (good oxidation) into the wine and gets all those great aromas swirling around the glass for you to smell!

Q Should I decant wine before

I drink it?

A Decanting can do wonders for

your wine, but it isn’t always necessary. You should have a nice decanter at home if you’re serious about enjoying some great red wines (don’t worry about decanting white wines), and that decanter should have a nice wide bottom that creates a ton of surface area when the wine is poured in, and a narrow top that keeps too much air from getting introduced and makes it easy to pour a glass. The types of red wines you’re decanting are usually full bodied reds that usually have a some age on them (like 5-10+ years), not those cheap red blends you’re buying for $8.99 at the market. The idea behind decanting is you’re introducing oxygen into the wine and a chemical change is happening, a lot of those volatile compounds (bad aromas) are evaporating off and the harsher tannins are softening up a bit, which allows you to enjoy the wine more. So, if you have a 2010 Barolo or a 2015 Napa Cabernet, let those bad boys decant for 30-60 minutes, maybe take some small sips and smells during that time so you can see how the wine changes.

Say hello to Thelma, a one year old sweetie with a great personality. After raising three strapping male kittens as a single mother, Thelma is ready for a fresh start. BRING DOWN THE HOUSE WITH THE

By Jody Robinson

I haven’t been a kid in a while. What I recall about music lessons is that they were forced, and more importantly, stodgy.

B

eginning somewhere around the fourth grade, students were advised to pick an instrument for class, and I can honestly say I only know two adults from those classes who still play those instruments today. Needless to say, my music classes were nothing like the offering at School of Rock Huntington Beach. A unique community of teachers, musicians, and families, School of Rock Huntington Beach sounds exactly like what it is, and also nothing like what it truly means. Founded in 2014 by a trio of performers, educators, and business owners, the industry welcomed them onto the scene with open arms. Larry Boodman, an alum of the Orange County School of the Arts, and Jeff Nunes were members of an L.A-based indie rock group known as Fourwayfree. Joey Acona, a production and performance instructor at OCSA for many years, knew Boodman through their common connections. “The School of Rock was borne from the desire to create a safe place for supportive collaboration among students, and has instilled confidence, self-esteem, and discipline that will serve them well into the future pur50

suit of any goal, not just music," says Jeff. Practical instruction meets professional performance education. The students learn on guitar, bass, keyboards, drums, or vocals. But their weekly private lesson is combined with a weekly group rehearsal, “as the students prepare for an actual rock show that they perform at the end of the season. Themed - ACDC, Arena Rock, or Grunge. And played on professional stages like the House of Blues Anaheim.” If you’re not sure what you’d like to specialize in just yet, no worries. School of Rock Huntington Beach provides a free trial lesson to anyone interested, and all are welcome to give them a try. Ages 6 to adult are brought into the fold, and “given the chance to learn team work, practice commitment, and master their chosen instrument. It makes learning not only fun and engaging, but a team sport.” Glad I don’t have to be a kid to go back to School (of Rock).

JOBST™ medical compression stockings and socks are a simple and comfortable way to help avoid heavy, tired and achy legs and the swelling of feet and ankles.

Travel Can Be Tough on Your Legs

Unlike the products available at your local drugstore, JOBST™ medical compression stockings and socks are recommended by physicians for their clinically proven gradient compression benefit. Cefali & Cefali, APC Trusted Accident Attorneys for the Most Serious Injuries By Jody Robinson

It’s a remarkable feeling when you can find someone to take your side. In relationships, sports: you name it. That one person who believes in you, makes you better, fights alongside you.

M

ichael Cefali matched with his person (his wife Courtney) long before law school - but their partnership extended through the long years studying for the bar and paid off in an even match that has stacked up in their favor many times over. Graduates of Chapman Law and California Western, respectively, they started the San Juan Capistrano-based Cefali & Cefali, APC in July of 2019 and have been fighting for the little guy ever since. From setting clients up with top-tier doctors and specialists, to negotiating stellar settlements, Cefali & Cefali, APC handles cases from start to finish with client health as their top priority.

it was very apparent that he cared about me and my case! He and his team are so HONEST and FAIR and it was clear from start to finish that he had my best interest in mind! Not only is he a good lawyer but he is a good person which made a world of difference for me. I could not have asked for a better experience with a personal injury attorney! I have already recommended him to all of my friends and I will continue to recommended him to anyone looking for a good lawyer! Thank you so much Cefali and Cefali!”

Another client Carrie echoes Jamie’s sentiment, “My husband and I were rear-ended on the freeway. We felt bad thinking of contacting a lawyer, but after several months of continuous pain and medical treatments, a friend recommended Michael Cefali. From the beginning, he lived up to his core values of integrity, loyalty, and vigorous advocacy. Michael is a dedicated, friendly, and competent attorney who seamlessly represented our interests and ensured the outcome was in our favor. He treated us not like a client, but like family; he

Focusing on all aspects of personal injury, the Cefalis are what you might expect in such a ring: passionate, aggressive, and most importantly, honest - all traits that have contributed to the couple having recovered millions of dollars per year on behalf of their clients since opening their firm. “The insurance companies would like you to think that they get to determine the value of your injuries, your suffering,” says Michael. “We’ll fight for every last penny because we know that you deserve it.” Clients appreciate the work that the Cefalis do. In fact, as of the date of this publication, you won’t find a single negative review of their firm anywhere on the internet. Client Jamie shares, “I am so grateful for everything that Mike Cefali and his team did for me! Not only was he able to help me get what I was owed in my settlement and then some, but he was so responsive and kind and 58

was there any time we needed him. He was empathetic to our situation and worked tirelessly with all parties to represent us. We don’t trust many people, but we trust Michael and his team and would highly recommend him to anyone seeking a professional, effective, and focused attorney.” With five staff members to back up the stellar work Michael and Courtney produce, the couple remain incredibly hands on, based on a culture of empathy, integrity and advocacy. “We craft each case personally, build each one for trial, and remain accessible to clients,” says Michael. “Personal injury attorneys get a bad rap when really we’re the good guys. I like to think of our firm as a pirate ship. Nimble, clever, and tenacious in spite of being outspent by the adversary, we pry money from greedy insurance companies and give it to our very deserving clients.” Giving back is the spirit of the firm, and community work creates a direct link between Michael, Courtney, and their circle in San Juan Capistrano. The couple and their team proudly supports a number of local charitable and community organizations including: The Boys and Girls Club of Capistrano Valley (Courtney is on the Board of Directors), The San Juan Capistrano Friends of the Library (Courtney is also a board member), CREER, the Pacific Marine Mammal Foundation, and Project Coyote. Michael is a member of the San Juan Capistrano Rotary Club and has been recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow. The Cefali team’s ethics, constant communication (every client is given Michael’s personal cell phone for easy accessibility), commitment to their clients and involvement in the community keeps everyone growing stronger and healthier together. Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical features the hit songs “You’re A Mean One Mr. Grinch” and “Welcome Christmas” (written by Albert Hague and Dr. Seuss) from the original animated series. Max the Dog narrates as the mean and scheming Grinch, whose heart is “two sizes too small,” decides to steal Christmas away from the Holiday loving Whos. Magnificent sets (John Lee Beatty) and costumes (Robert Morgan) inspired by Dr. Seuss’ original illustrations help transport audiences to the whimsical world of Whoville, while the Music and Book of Mel Marvin and Timothy Mason breathe new life into this timeless story of the true meaning of Christmas. The 2023 production is directed by Matt August and choreographed by Bob Richard based on the original choreography by John DeLuca and originally created by 3-time Tony Award® winning director, Jack O’Brien.
