“Our participation in the magazines produced by Community Publications has been a great asset and a complete success in terms of our marketing efforts and return on our investment. My office staff report that the feedback from potential clients has been very positive. Customers are so pleased that the guy on the cover is the same gentleman who shows up to meet with them. Call volumes have increased in the cities the magazines cover. Participating in South County Magazine and Sorbet - a SoCal Senior Publication has been such a positive experience! We are grateful and look forward to working with Jody and her team again in the future.”

Because Home is Where the Heart is
For the majority of seniors living in California, quality of life equates to living at home. A recent AARP survey reports that 77 percent of se niors want to remain in their home for the long term.
The advantages of aging in place are numerous. As we age we want to maintain the highest degree of inde pendence possible. Our home is fa miliar and comforting to us, it’s where we feel safe.
Throughout the pandemic we have seen our homes become a safe-ha ven, a place where we can heal and stay healthy. Our home is filled with memories and it’s what we’ve created over the years with our loved-ones.
Often times in order to keep seniors living at home in comfort and safety, services and help are needed. Many seniors have opted for home care services when they need help and want to remain at home.
As the senior population increases, so has the home care industry. We spoke
to Kyle Warner, co-owner of Your Home Care Inc. about what they do and the benefits of home care services.
Question: Tell us a little bit about Your Home Care and what it is that you do.
Answer: At Your Home Care, our mission is to enrich the quality of life for seniors by providing compassion ate caregiving services at home. The agency was created in 2003 and is family owned and operated.
Our agency is licensed, insured and bonded, all our amazing caregivers are vetted, trained and background checked. We service most areas of Orange County, CA with a concen tration in Laguna Woods and the surrounding cities. And we also work seamlessly with all Long-Term Care Insurance plans.
Q: What is the biggest gift or or blessing that you see while providing care for seniors?
A: The culture we have created here at Your Home Care is that of kindness and compassion. The most important
6
thing we can offer families is that we honor the people we are entrusted to care for. It is indeed a blessing to see our services make a positive impact in people’s lives. It is humbling to know that we get to provide a vital service that enriches and prolongs people’s lives.
Q: How many hours does a typical home care client start with?
A: The hours vary based on the needs of the client. Some clients like to start with a four-hour, or a six-hour shift. Others know they will need more care than that and schedule full days. We try to be as accommodat ing as possible to meet the scheduling needs of our clients.
We work with many clients coming home from the hospital, or skilled nurs ing facility and they require 24 hour care as they rehab and regain their strength.
Another important aspect of schedul ing is establishing consistency and de pendability for the families we serve. We work hard to have the same care givers work with our clients whenever possible in order to build rapport and strong relationships.
Q: Tell us about the staff at Your Home Care.
A: Employees and clients say they appreciate working with us because they get to deal directly with the owners. They like working with the decision makers because it tends to make things run more smoothly and the process is more streamlined. Owners Segal Ronen and Kyle Warner over see everything from client acquisition, employee opera tions to office administration.
But the real magic behind what we do is the talented, experienced team of caregivers we have the pleasure of working alongside. Our team is filled with special people and it’s apparent they genuinely love what they do and have “a calling” for this work. They are service-minded, kind people, who love to care for seniors as though they are family.
Q: What types of services does home care typically cover?
A: We offer a wide range of non-medical home care ser vices and customize a care plan for every client. These ser vices include personal care related services such as bath ing, dressing, bathroom assistance and other personal hygiene needs. We prepare meals, provide transportation and help with housekeeping duties. We help with mobility and fall prevention. We basically help with all the activities of normal daily living that seniors might need a hand with.
Companionship and social engagement is another key aspect of caregiving. Some of our seniors feel isolated and lonely, so a caregiver becomes a friend to talk to and their bond is lasting.
Seniors with a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s or Dementia can benefit greatly from a caregiver because they are experienced in working with people with cognitive impairments. They are trained on the techniques used to manage behavior, keeping them safe and well supervised.
Q: What makes Your home care stand out above the other home care agencies?
A: The senior home care industry is growing and chang ing. The trend we are seeing is an increase in rates, add-on fees and lengthy minimum hour requirements.
At Your Home Care we don’t have lengthy minimum hour requirements, nor do we up-charge. We make every effort to be as accommodating and flexible as possible to meet the needs of our clients. We are responsive and available to our clients and caregivers when they need us. We act quickly to address and resolve any issue or concern.
Going back to our mission…to provide compassionate home care services that enrich families’ lives… with this in mind we are always looking for ways we can exceed our clients’ expectations.
Your Home Care is a company with heart, we care about our clients, and we care about our employees. If you are considering home care for you or your loved one, you can call Kyle Warner directly at (949) 424-9322 and let us show you how much we care.

An all-time must-have on any self-re specting seafood connoisseur’s wish list is the California Spiny Lobster - now in season. Their counterparts from Maine are delicious, but this special crustacean boasts a sweeter flavor profile and more meat (gen erally around 25% more per pound).
Caught off the California coast in the waters from Baja to Morro Bay, these beauties were incredibly succulent and didn’t need anything other than drawn butter to enhance the flavor.

Absolutely Fabulous the Holidays! for
By Jody Robinson
The nature of gift purchasing has changed greatly since the ad vent of the internet. How has Absolutely Fabulous stayed above the fray and blossomed while the rest of the gift industry flounders? “That’s easy,” responds Diane Silver stein, owner of the iconic Huntington Beach-based Absolutely Fabulous gift boutique, “quality, selection,
price range, and ease of shopping.” After many visits to her “absolute ly fabulous” gift and décor shop, I would have to agree. “Plus – we ship world-wide, so you can mail your stuff right from here!”
While the internet excels at making home shopping the easiest experience, when you know exactly what you’re
looking for, much of holiday gift-giv ing starts with “who is this for, and how much do I want to spend on them?” Absolutely Fabulous makes this type of shopping easy with their “you know the personality, we know the product” approach to holiday gift-giving. “You see,” Diane explains in her charming English accent, “we spend hours and hours searching for the best new prod ucts offered in the gift industry. When our customers come in with their lists, we walk them around and point out options that our customers would nev er have found in an internet search.”
12
Diane is not kidding on that last point. The variety and uniqueness of prod ucts at Absolutely Fabulous is as tounding: hand-made jewelry, Miche Bag purses (the ones where you just drop the “insides” of your purse into a new shell, rather than having to dump all of your stuff out!), $10 silk scarves, old-school shaving kits for men, a “Daddy’s Tool Bag” that includes dia per changing equipment, and instruc tional DVD, face mask and other funny items, rare paintings by successful art ists, large crystal chandeliers, crystal perfume bottles, stuffed animal baby bottle covers, piggy banks for kids, wedding party gifts, rare Disney art and collectibles, holiday-themed de cor and gifts, Christmas decorations
that range from very inexpensive bottle stoppers and tree decorations to 6-foot high collectible Santa dolls. Ab Fab really does cover the gam ut of gifts for anyone: “from birth to death and everything in-between is our moniker” Diane proudly states. I tend to agree.
This holiday season, find out why Absolutely Fabulous is so appropriately-named. Connect with Diane and the crew at Absolutely Fabulous located at 6026 Warner Avenuein Huntington Beach, call (714) 842-1608 or visit www.absolutelyfabulous1.com

WiseDecisionswith RetirementinMind Certainfinancial&lifestylechoicesmay leadyoutowardabetterfuture.
Someretirees succeed at realizing the life they want; others don’t. Fate aside, it isn’t merely a matter of investment decisions that makes the dif ference. There are certain dos and don’ts – some less ap parent than others – that tend to encourage retirement happiness and comfort.
Retire financially literate. Some retirees don’t know how much they don’t know. They end their careers with inadequate financial knowledge, and yet, feel they can prepare for retirement on their own. They mistake creat ing a retirement income strategy with the whole of pre paring for retirement, and gloss over longevity risk, risks to their estate, and potential health care expenses. The more you know, the more your retirement readiness im proves.
A goal to retire debt free – or close to debt free? Even if your retirement savings are substantial, you may want to consider reviewing your overall debt situation.1
Retire with purpose. There’s a difference between retir ing and quitting. Some people can’t wait to quit their job at 62 or 65. If only they could escape and just relax and do nothing for a few years – wouldn’t that be a nice reward? Relaxation can lead to inertia, however – and inertia can lead to restlessness, even depression. You want to retire to a dream, not away from a problem.
The bottom line? Retirees who know what they want to do – and go out and do it – are positively contributing to their mental health and possibly their physical health as well. If they do something that is not only vital to them, but important to others, their community can benefit as well.
Retire healthy. Smoking, drinking, overeating, a dearth of physical activity – all these can take a toll on your capacity to live life fully and enjoy retirement. It is never too late to change habits that may lead to poor health.
Retire where you feel at home. It could be where you live now; it could be a nearby place where the scenery and people are uplifting. If you find yourself lonely in re tirement, then look for ways to connect with people who share your experiences, interests, and passions; those who encourage you and welcome you. This so cial interaction is one of the great, intan gible retirement benefits.

It’s Not Epoxy, It’s SpartaFlex!
For nearly 40 years, southern California homeowners have used Epoxy for garage and industrial floor coat ing projects despite its tendency to yellow, it’s soft and easy to scratch surface and it’s tendency to be permanently damaged by the hot, high performance tires found on most cars in the OC area.
Today OC homeowners don’t have to settle for Epoxy and all of its flaws anymore. SpartaFlex is an advanced, next generation 100% solids polyaspartic floor coating that gives your garage a beautiful finish that is 3x harder than epoxy, resists yellowing while also resisting permanent damage from hot tires. Perhaps best of all, SpartaFlex comes with a much better warranty than Epoxy.
Perkins Custom Coatings has been installing SpartaFlex on OC garage floors for nearly 14 years and has complet ed over 9,000 floors during that period of time. Its CEO and owner, Paul Frankel is considered by many to be the most knowledgeable contractor in the local market. “Un like many of our competitors, we strive to do an onsite as sessment including a moisture test for every floor coating project we install and instead of using the ‘one size fits all’ approach, we develop a coating solution that we believe will last for decades not just for a few years.”
Perkins uses only the most advanced surface preparation methods available and will either diamond grind or shot blast every floor that he installs. Old, failing, yellowed ep
oxy coatings can also be removed during this same pro cess. “Despite the fact that Coatings Industry requires concrete to at least be diamond ground before installing a new coating system, many of my competitors will install their coatings right over raw or pressure washed concrete just to save a few bucks - I will never do that” says Paul.
Perkins also is known for its professional and unique ap proach to repairing concrete cracks. “Anyone can slap some crack repair paste to cosmetically fix a crack” says Paul. A year later, when the concrete moves again and damages their brand new floor coating, the devastated homeowner will learn that this damage is not covered by the typical Epoxy warranty. “We are the only company that I know of that uses a ‘structural crack repair’ technique to fix cracks. The process is so effective we can offer our customers a warranty that can cover future damage from cracks!” says Paul.
After the surface prep is completed, a very effective mois ture control primer is applied to the concrete. “This is ex tremely important” says Paul because for many homes built in Socal before 2005, elevated moisture vapor levels in the garage concrete can have a detrimental impact on floor coatings. Paul does a fast and non-destructive moisture test for every one of the pre-2005 homes he visits and de velops a unique installation plan for each home. For newer homes, Paul and his crew can use a basic primer that dries a bit faster allowing installation of a garage floor in as little as one day!
The color chips that give the Perkins floor its legendary ap pearance are sandwiched between this primer and finish coat. Perkins carries the widest selection of colors and sizes in the market and uses a ‘full chip broadcast’, not a partial sprinkling of chips like many of its competitors. “The full chip broadcast gives the floor a consistent appearance and makes the floor much more durable and helps hide dirt bet ter than the partial broadcast finish” says Paul.
Finally, Perkins installs the SpartaFlex polyaspartic finish coat and the finished garage comes to life. “Epoxy & Spar taFlex floor coatings are virtually identical in appearance when they are first installed” says Paul. “However, when you will really begin to appreciate a SpartaFlex floor is a few months down the road when you would typically start to see problems develop with an Epoxy floor. If there was a better material on the market, I would be selling it, but there isn’t and that is why we love selling SpartaFlex.”
For more information or to see for yourself the advantages of SpartaFlex over Epoxy, you can call Perkins Custom Coatings, at 866-330-1329 or visit their informative website at www.perkinscustomcoatings.com.

Food and Faith Mix Well at The Covington
At The Covington, an ECS senior living community in South Orange County’s Aliso Viejo, holiday meals are an opportunity to create cultural experiences for residents.
The Covington is home to resi dents of many faiths. Holiday meals are a chance for residents to celebrate their faith and culture with others through food.
“There are multiple religious beliefs here at The Covington,” says Javier Sarmiento, Dining Services Director at The Covington, whose hospitality background includes The Four Sea sons and Hilton Hotels. “So, when there’s a religious holiday, we try to accommodate as much as we can by creating delicious meals that are typi cal for that celebration.”
Holiday meals at The Covington are frequent throughout the year, and in clude Seder dinner for Passover and Chinese New Year.
“Our Executive Chef, Mike Desim one, is great at coming up with dif ferent dishes that accommodate our residents,” says Sarmiento. “It’s something we’re really proud of – at tention to detail.”
Resident reaction is what makes it all worth it.
“Our residents are really appreciative of our dinners,” says Sarmiento. “I’m
surrounded by an extremely talented team and it is really gratifying to be able to host meaningful celebrations like this for our residents.”
It’s not just the Culinary Team at The Covington that helps make these holiday meals happen. The resident Dining Services Committee plays a large role, too. “Our Committee is comprised of approximately 25 resi
dents, but anyone can come to the meetings,” says resident Barbara Peck, Chair of the Dining Services Committee. “The purpose is to have an open, on-going conversa tion with our chefs, and to share comments and suggestions,” says Peck. “They’re always agreeable with what we have to say and open to ideas we have for upcoming events.”
18
The Committee gathers monthly, along with Sarmiento, Desimone, and the Dining Room Services Man ager, Gerardo Guerrero. The group discusses upcoming celebrations and menu options. It takes about 2-3 weeks to execute a holiday meal, from or dering food, testing menus and tasting dishes, and making sure the meals look great on the plate. Depending on the number of residents who are attending a particular holiday dinner, the celebra tions occur in The Cov ington’s variety of dining venues and event spaces such as the Grand View formal dining room, the Lounge, or Schum acher Hall.
These holiday meals are in addition to the approximately 11,500 meals The Covington’s Culinary Team ex ecutes each month.
“Food is a very important part of life at The Covington, and it’s done very well,” says Peck.
Part of what makes the meals at The Covington so delicious are the highquality ingredients used by the Culi nary Team.
Meals feature hormone-free poultry and beef that is USDA Choice or bet ter. Santa Monica Seafood delivers fresh seafood twice weekly and se lections are made per the Monterey
Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch guidelines. Locally sourced produce is always a priority to support nearby farmers and the region’s economy.
At one particular Committee meet ing, a resident requested the Culinary Team bring back the Triple Chocolate Cookies, which had been phased out because of pandemic-related sup ply chain issues. “Sure enough, that same week, we had Triple Choco late Cookies back on the menu,” says Peck. “Sometimes it’s the little things.”
“We normally wouldn’t be able to accommodate a request like this so quickly because of ingredients being on back order, so we got creative and had our pastry chef make the cook ies from scratch,” says Sarmiento.
“Whatever it takes.”
Another way residents are able to stay in touch with the Culinary Team at The Covington is through com ment cards in each of the dining rooms. The cards give residents an opportunity to share their feedback on a particular dish or meal. “It helps motivate our team when we hear positive comments,” says Sarmiento. “And it gives us a chance to coursecorrect when we receive not-so-great comments. We want to hear it all.”
The Culinary Team occasionally re ceives handwritten recipes on the
comment cards, a nice insight into residents’ tastes, memories, and pas sions. “Chef Desimone will take the resident’s recipe, work on it, and fig ure out how to implement it into our menus,” says Sarmiento. One such menu offering is called Grandma’s Favorite Meatloaf.
But while faith-based meals are an important aspect of life at The Cov ington, so, too, are the events that are simply a great time. These events add an extra air of festivity to an al ready active social life at The Cov ington. Events include luaus, barbe cues, and even an Elvis Presley Night. “Whether it’s religious or not, we try to be very creative with what we do,” says Sarmiento.
Oktoberfest 2022 was a huge suc cess and a lot of fun for residents. “The Dining Committee met with the Culinary Team, and we asked them to serve drinks and appetizers that would be found at a traditional Okto berfest,” says Peck. “So, they brought in kegs of German beer, pretzels with cheese sauce, and bratwurst. It was a lot of fun.”
“The main point is to be able to give the residents a great experience,” says Sarmiento. “That’s what we’re here for.”

What to Consider when Choosing Hospice!
Hospice care is a type of health care that focuses on the palliation of a terminally ill patient’s pain and symp toms and attending to their emotion al and spiritual needs at the end of life. Hospice care prioritizes comfort and quality of life by reducing pain and suffering. Hospice care provides an alternative to therapies focused on life-prolonging measures that may be arduous, likely to cause more symptoms, or are not aligned with a person’s goals.
You qualify for hospice care if you have Medicare Part A (Hospital In surance) and meet all of these con ditions:
• Your hospice doctor and your reg ular doctor (if you have one) cer tify that you’re terminally ill (with a life expectancy of 6 months or less).
• You accept comfort care (palliative care) instead of care to cure your illness.
• You sign a statement choosing hospice care instead of other Medicare-covered treatments for your terminal illness and related conditions.
Medicare-certified hospice care is usually given in your home or other facility where you live, like a nursing home. You can also get hospice care in an inpatient hospice facility. Origi nal Medicare will still pay for covered benefits for any health problems that aren’t part of your terminal illness and related conditions, but this is unusual. Once you choose hospice care, your hospice benefit will usually cover ev erything you need. The following are four levels of hospice care:
ROUTINE HOME CARE
• Most common level of care in hos pice. Patient is generally stable and the patient’s symptoms, like pain or nausea and vomiting, are adequately controlled
• Usually provided in the home
GENERAL IN-PATIENT CARE
• Crisis-like level of care for shortterm management of out-of-con trol patient pain and/or symp toms usually provided outside the home, in an inpatient setting at a medical facility like a hospital or skilled nursing facility.
CONTINUOUS HOME CARE
• Crisis-like level of care for shortterm management of out-of-con trol patient pain and/or symptoms
• Usually provided in the home.
RESPITE CARE
• A level of temporary care provid ed in nursing home, hospice inpa tient facility, or hospital so that a family member or friend who’s the patient’s caregiver can take some time off
• This level of care is tied to caregiv er needs, not patient symptoms
Level of care is one of many things to consider when choosing a hospice. Patient and caregiver needs may im pact the level of care a hospice pro vides. Additionally, hospices that see a small number of patients might not have patients that need a level of care besides routine home care. If you’re considering a hospice that hasn’t pro vided a level of care beyond routine
home care in a 3-year period, talk to your doctor and/or hospice represen tative.
YOUR COSTS IN ORIGINAL MEDICARE
• You pay nothing for hospice care.
• You pay a copayment of up to $5 for each prescription for outpa tient drugs for pain and symptom management. In the rare case the hospice benefit doesn’t cover your drug, your hospice provider should contact your plan to see if Part D covers it. The hospice pro vider will inform you if any drugs or services aren’t covered, and if you’ll be required to pay for them.
• You may pay 5% of the Medi care-Approved Amount for inpa tient respite care.
• You may have to pay for room and board if you live in a facility (like a nursing home) and choose to get hospice care.

Farruquito is simply “the greatest flamenco dancer of this century” (NY Times).
The heir to the most renowned Gypsy flamenco dynasty (the son of flamenco singer Juan Fernández Flores “El Moreno” and dancer Rosario Montoya Manzano “La Farruca”), he was immersed in the purest form of flamenco by his grand father, “El Farruco,” one of the great est dancers in the history of flamenco.
Farruquito made his first international stage appearance at the age of 4 on Broadway alongside his grandfather. At the age of 11, he was featured in the film Flamenco, produced by the legendary film director, Carlos Saura, that launched Farruquito’s career into a new stratosphere and positioned him among the most elite flamenco artists of the world.

There are three main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Because each has many different appearances, it is important to know the early warning signs. How Can I Tell If I Have Skin Cancer? FLEMING DERMATOLOGY & AESTHETIC CENTER 23141 Moulton Parkway, Suite 110, Laguna Hills | (949) 916-5956 Kristy Fleming, MD, Double Board-Certified in Dermatology and Micrographic Dermatologic Surgery 24
Look especially for change of any kind. Do not ignore a suspicious spot simply because it does not hurt. Skin cancers may be painless, but dangerous all the same. If you notice one or more of the warning signs, see a board-certified dermatologist right away, preferably one who specializes in diseases of the skin.
WHAT PATIENTS NEED TO KNOW
1. Everyone needs to perform a self-skin exam once a month.
2. Melanoma can appear any where on the skin, including the palms/soles, under your nails, and places...for most, have never seen the light of day (genitalia). For this rea son, it is important to look ev erywhere. Lock the bathroom door, get out a hand mirror, and check, it could save your life.
ACTINIC KERATOSIS
An actinic keratosis (AK) is a crusty, scaly growth caused by damage from expo sure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. An AK is considered a precancer because if left alone, it could develop into a skin cancer. AKs are the product of a lifetime accumulation of UV damage and typi cally appear on areas most commonly exposed sun, such as the backs of the hands, forearms, face, neck, and scalp.
BASAL CELL CARCINOMA
Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most frequently occurring form of all cancers, with more than 4 million cases of diagnosed in the U.S. each year. BCCs may look like open sores, red patches, pink growths, shiny bumps, or scars. Any skin lesion that doesn’t heal, or bleeds with even gentle trauma, such as drying with a towel, is concerning for a BCC.
3. What to look for: ABCDEs, and an ugly duckling
A - Asymmetry: If I draw a line down the middle, do the sides match?
B - Border: Is there a nice crisp border, or does the mole melt into the sur rounding skin?
C - Color: Moles should be one color, one shade of brown. Is there a variety of shades or additional colors, such as black, red, white, or blue?
D - Diameter: Any mole larg er than 6mm, ie the head of a pencil eraser, has a higher risk of becoming melanoma.
E - Evolution: Has it changed?
SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA
Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells arising in the epidermis, the skin’s out ermost layer. SCCs often look like scaly red patches, crusty bumps, warts, or elevated growths with a central depres sion. SCCs may appear suddenly and some forms are tender to touch. They can become disfiguring and sometimes deadly if allowed to grow. More than 1 million cases of SCC are diagnosed each year in the U.S., which translates to about 115 cases diagnosed every hour. Incidence has increased by 200 percent in the past three decades in the U.S., and more than 15,000 Americans die each year from this type of skin cancer.
MELANOMA
Melanoma is a very dangerous form of skin cancer. Melanoma is caused mainly by intense, occasional UV exposure (frequently leading to sunburn), especially in those who are genetically predisposed to the disease. An estimated 178,560 cases of melanoma are diagnosed in the U.S. each year and is fatal for an estimated 9,320 of these patients. Fortunately, if melanoma is recognized and treated early, it is almost always curable.
F - The Ugly Duckling Sign: Most people have a “sig nature mole,” their own personal mole appearance and architecture. Is there a mole that seems different from all the others?
4. Everyone needs a full body skin exam by a board-cer tified dermatologist once a year, more frequently if you have a family history of skin cancer, a personal history of skin cancer, or live in an area with substantial sunshine.

Radio City’s Most Wonderful Show of the Year
The Rockettes’ Christmas Spectacular
By Jody Robinson
There’s an extremely popular Joni Mitchell song that starts, “It’s coming on Christmas/ They’re cutting down trees”, and it is one of my absolute favorite markers of the season, despite its melancholy tone. Christmas is just one of those seasons full of feeling that runs the spectrum - and at the very tip top of the other side, the truly joyful ecstat ic side, is the Christmas Spectacular Starring the Radio City Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall.
Coming on in just over a month, the variety show-inspired chorus line will run from November 18th through January 2nd, delighting audienc es in the same way it has for the last 90 years. With more than 69 million spectators since the original Special debuted in 1933, the one-of-a-kind show features nine separate numbers over the 90-minute run: showcasing its performers as some of the most technically savvy and unbelievably strong athletes around. The Rockettes unique style was an intentional move from its founder and chief choreogra
pher Russell Markert. Every decision has been made with precision since 1925 when the troupe was originally founded - just eight short years before the first Christmas Spectacular.
5’10 ½” to ensure the line of 36 danc ers appears equal in stature from any perspective in the audience, the tallest women are positioned in the middle with the least tall women on the end. Arguably some of the strongest wom en in America, the Rockettes were also the very first entertainers to volunteer for the USO, and by the early 2000’s, marked their 75th anniversary by cel ebrating the 2,500 women having that have been part of this iconic line through their diamond jubilee.
Dancers must be proficient in tap, modern, jazz, and ballet - and match the Rockettes’ height requirement too. Once capping at 5’6 ½”, the modern Rockette stands between 5’5” and
Elizabeth “Liz” Peterson, a California native and lifelong dancer is celebrat ing her 9th year as a Radio City Rock ette. Admittedly, no small feat. The dancers have to audition each year to be accepted and agree to leave fami ly and friends behind for training that begins in October - and the 16 shows a week that persist through the new year. Difficult, sure, but Liz says “the ladies I perform with are also familywe all work together so well and it’s a true sisterhood.”
With quick costume changes (the fast est takes only 78 seconds!) through out the show, there’s little margin for
Rockette Elizabeth “Liz” Peterson

as they are
“As a freshman in college, I was on a path to be an engineer but I thought I’d try auditioning for the Rockettes,” she says. “Dance has always been a big part of my family. I flew to New York, but I didn’t get called back after that initial two-day audition.” Later, after another two-day stint in the Big Apple, Elizabeth did get the call - while she was at her job dancing at Disney land. Six hours a day for six weeks got her foot in the door, and a high kick so lidified her place in the chorus line.
When she isn’t dressed for the Rock ettes’ iconic “Parade of the Wooden Soldiers” number, or a reindeer pull ing Santa’s sleigh across the stage at Radio City, Elizabeth works remote ly as an HR manager for a Bay Area company, and loves getting outside in any capacity: running, hiking, bik ing. Being a Rockette allows her to enmesh athleticism with creativity, and see that determination and ded ication can pay off.
“One of the most rewarding aspects is being able to perform for audienc es and seeing the impact we can have on young women - that they see they can follow their dreams.” Another is when people say they saw the show years ago, and still think fondly of the performance today - like Elizabeth’s grandfather. Later, in Joni Mitchell’s iconic and somber tune, she wishes for a long enough river so she could ‘teach my feet to fly’. Perhaps, I think, she should have just strolled on down to Radio City Music Hall for the Christmas Spectacular.

Life. Organized.
By Jody Robinson
Classy Closets’ unique, custom solutions for the home and office can instantly double or even triple your storage space.
Closet
organization is something of an oxymoron at my house. Same goes for my home office.
I actually do know where everything is in the stacks of paper that perpetu ally reside atop my desk, but good luck having anyone else make rhyme or reason of my filing “system.”
I’m clearly a candidate for the handi work of a company like Classy Closets – if it’s a matter of function or simply
a desire to have your mess aestheti cally addressed, Classy Closets will customize your work/life space with made-toorder cabinetry and organi zation systems for your home office, garage, bedroom, laundry room, pantry, media centers, wallbeds and more.
Think you can’t afford to bring in the professionals? Classy Closets, which has served all of Orange County and
San Diego since 2003, of fers organization options for virtually every budget – from basic white mela nine to solid wood cabi netry.
“Nothing we do is cookie cutter,” says Company CFO Gary Pavitt. “Al though Classy Closets is a franchise, we’re not governed by the rules that typically dictate pro cesses of typical franchise operations – particularly with regard to the mate rials and mounting sys tems we use. What works in terms of style and func tion at a home in Tucson, for instance, wouldn’t necessarily translate to a house in Huntington Beach. So we have the freedom to customize our work to our client’s specific needs and de sires.”
Another differentiator is that Gary and his team manufacture their prod ucts right here in Southern California, which affords them the ability to offer their clients a broader range of prod uct options at a level of quality that is “second to none.” And because they are “hands-on” from design consulta tion to manufacture and installation, Gary and his staff pride themselves on providing unparalleled customer service.
“What’s really fun is having the abil ity to create the products in-house,” says Gary. “I really enjoy introduc ing new ways to make things better, bringing in new products and keep ing up with the latest trends in the in dustry. We go out of our way to keep our customers satisfied … that’s what makes it all worthwhile. As in any business, your customers are golden and we’ve been very fortunate that a large percentage of our business is in referrals.”
Repeat customers Marta and Mike Fowler of San Diego say that Classy
52
Closets is a “dream company - one that not only deliv ers beautiful craftsmanship, but also that elusive quality of excellent service. Every good cliché regarding their work applies.”
“This is our second home that Classy Closets has refined to meet all our storage needs, from closets to garage, from bathroom storage to entertainment center. And they never try to oversell, giving honest recommendations for products, charging fair prices within reach,” says Marta. “Their creative solutions and impeccable workmanship combine to make functional pieces we love living with. We have only one warning: Classy Closets is addictive, and you will find yourself wanting to spread the good news.”
In a letter to Gary’s business partner Kate Monaghan, Carlsbad-based Interior Designer Karen Wirrig echoes the Fowler’s sentiment and adds that “my new master closet is beautiful and your attention to detail is evident. I also want to commend your installation crew. They were on time, tidy, polite, and did excellent work … I will wholeheartedly recommend your company to all my clients. It has been a pleasure to work with you all.”

Travel Can Be Tough on Your Legs
By Livia De Los Rios
Many people travel long dis tances and have to remain seated for two or three hours or even longer. They might not think much of it, but when movement is constrained, the blood circulation in the legs is restricted. This can con tribute to heavy legs, leg pain and swollen feet and ankles.
Prolonged sitting is also a major risk factor for the development of phlebi tis and Deep-vein Thrombosis (DVT). Deep-vein Thrombosis involves the formation of blood clots (thrombi) in the deep leg veins during prolonged inactivity. In some cases, blood clots

Tips to reducing the discomfort and risks associated with prolonged inactivity:
• Wear comfortable clothing
• Drink plenty of fluids (avoid alcohol)
• Stand up and stretch several times during travel
• Wear gradient compression legwear
to anyone during travel, regardless of age, weight or lifestyle.
JOBST™ medical compression stockings and socks are a simple and comfortable way to help avoid heavy, tired and achy legs and the swelling of feet and ankles.
Unlike the products available at your local drugstore, JOBST™ medical compression stockings and socks are recommended by physicians for their clinically proven gradient com pression benefit. Medical compres sion products reduce swelling and helps prevent the pooling of fluid in the venous or lymph systems. The stylish cotton blend dress socks and compression hose available today increase tissue pressure to help bal ance the flow of fluid across the capil laries of the limb.

Walker Art Center + Sculpture Garden
By Jody Robinson
Known as one-half of the “Twin Cities,” Minneapolis is one of the most welcoming, cultur ally rich places to visit as a family in the country. With growing numbers of gorgeous parks, beautiful lakes, hiking trails, bike paths and verdant green spaces, this city is also home to a vibrant arts scene (think world-class museums and progressive galleries), inspired dining, destination shopping and the “Minnesota Nicest” people.

Tour the Walker Art Center and get your fill of edgy contemporary works, or stroll through the Sculpture Garden - home to Claes Oldenburg and Coos je Bruggen’s iconic Spoonbridge and Cherry installation - and take in more than 40 different works from artists around the world. WHERE TO STAY
One of the most recognized names in luxury hotel brands, Loews prop erties across North America operate with the philosophy that “hospital ity comes from the heart.” Situated near the Mississippi River in the heart of downtown, Loews Minneapolis
56
(LoewsHotels.com) is no exception - this chic, modern 22-story hotel features 251 elegantly appointed, newly ren ovated guest rooms and suites, abundant family-friendly signature services and amenities, innovative dining and a location that literally can’t be beat (Target Field is just 1,500 feet away - a quick walk to watch baseball in a gorgeous open-air stadium). This property proved to be the perfect “home base” from which to experience the city and its rec reation and attractions.
Staff here has thoughtfully compiled a local line-up of family activities whether you’re looking to explore the environs or staying comfy indoors - they even offer assorted games for all ages which was par ticularly great from a parent perspective to keep our teens engaged and off their elec tronics.
My husband and I consider ourselves to be fledgling food ies so we were thrilled to sam ple the fare at Cosmos - New American cuisine inspired by the Pacific Regions. My Yellow Thai curry with shrimp and fra grant jasmine rice was super fla vorful, while his Gerber Amish roasted half chicken was equally delicious, enhanced with lemon tyme pan jus and accompanied by mashed potatoes and grilled asparagus.

WHAT TO DO
If you’re seeking a thrill, take a spin around Minnehaha Falls: summer or winter, and gape at the iced majesty even Queen Elsa would be jealous of. For our part, our teens couldn’t wait for our much-anticipated visit to the Mall of America (MallofAmerica. com). Mind you, an entire day spent in a shopping mall wasn’t my first thought when planning this weekend away, but for a truly unique, most memorable vacation - this ginormous space offers endless entertainment, dining, attrac tion and retail experiences.

South Coast Shutter and Shades
Operating honestly and with integrity has served as the foundation for the continued success of the Laguna Niguel-based South Coast Shutter and Shades for over 32 years. Owners Tom and Donna Schuster launched their own company after realizing that “on our own we would be able to offer quali ty products in an honest environment to our customers, as well as servicing the products we sell.”
Specializing in custom shutters, blinds (mini, faux, wood, vertical), cellular shades, woven woods, plantation and security shutters and everything in between, Tom and Donna offer free in-home consultations for design as well as measuring, they always in clude free professional installation and prefer to bring all of the samples to each client’s home to go over the assorted styles and many color op tions to suit each home’s interior and its homeowner’s unique lifestyle.
“We listen to you and then incor porate your ideas with ours to de sign your custom shutters, blinds or shades,” says Tom. “Our portfolios and samples are very extensive, so you will be able to envision how your windows are going to look when complete."
Tom and Donna, credit their success to date to the quality of customer service they and their team give their custom ers, which in turn creates a wonderful repeat and referral business. “Although there may be providers of similar prod ucts, there is no one that can match our superior customer service – from showing up on time, making precise measurements and flawless installa tions - and with a professional ‘can do’ attitude,” says Donna.
Tom adds that “our pricing with un beatable discounts, sales support and the fact that we offer our customers an in-house design team at no addition al charge is the first step in setting us apart from our competition. I am proud to say that we have built a reputation in the business for having the highest quality, best beauty, fit and finish and value available. All of our products come with a lifetime warranty.”
A 5-Star Yelp rated company, South Coast Shutter and Shades boasts scores of glowing testimonials on line, including Debora R of Laguna Niguel who writes "Donna and Tom are amazing! Great products, great prices, great service.I've used them twice for two different businesses and I could not be happier. Donna makes suggestions based on what I tell her
my needs are and she has been spot on with her recommendations. In stallations by Tom are quick and easy. Highly recommended!"
Another reviewer, Doug W. of Mission Viejo posted that "From the first call, I knew I was dealing with a reputa ble, experienced, HONEST company. Donna and Tom are absolute PROS and obviously take pride in their work … Their price was very competitive. Also, what they quote is what you pay - keep that in mind when talking to the "other guys" whose price seems to go up and up. All appointments in cluding install were FAST. The instal lation was flawless. I had a question later that evening about my motor ized shades and they called me back IMMEDIATELY. My impression is that I could call them 5 or 10 years from now and they would just as helpful."

Dining Experience Henry’s Coastal Cuisine
By Jody Robinson
isn’t necessarily a new term, but it is certainly taking on new meaning at Henry’s Coast al Cuisine. Located in the Waterfront Beach Resort, Huntington Beach’s most elegant and inspired oceanside dining experience, Henry’s takes end less waterfront views to the next lev el with an open-air patio, a carefully selected French and Californian wine selection and specialty craft cocktails.
Surf-fare
Dishes showcase regional flavors from the Southern California shores with an emphasis on seasonal, local ingredients. Executive Chef Lew is Butler pairs rich French traditions with an expansive, airy venue that put a delicious spin on farm-to-table fare.
Popular starters include grilled octo pus with sauteed spinach, confit Yu kon potato and blistered sweet cher ry tomatoes and the Nori (seaweed) infused fettuccini accompanied by summer squash and lobster dashi.
I love, love, love pan seared Diver scallops and the dish here doesn’t disappoint - super flavorful and per fectly prepared enhanced with mi rin stewed shishito peppers for just a touch of kick atop a miso carrot purée and baby squash ribbons. Our family’s meat eater, my husband Tim knows his way around a good filet. He says the grilled entree here was ten der and delicious, while diners at the next table raved about their roasted rack of lamb with eggplant purée and
the local roasted black cod with San Marzano tomato sauce and saffron whipped potatoes (both dishes Tim and I decided were “must-try” on a future date night).
A sweet treat to share to end the eve ning? The blueberry croustade was a delectable dessert I haven’t seen on any menu elsewhere - made with farm fresh blueberries, almond streu sel, vanilla ice cream and creme An glaise.
Seafood is a must here, as well as an elegant weekend brunch. Wind up for the day or wind down in surf coun try with fresh and sophisticated culi nary delights and spectacular ocean views.
